तं तु शोकपरिद्यूनं रामं दशरथात्मजम् ।
उवाच वचनं श्रीमान् सुग्रीवः शोकनाशनम् ॥१॥
1. taṃ tu śokaparidyūnaṃ rāmaṃ daśarathātmajam ,
uvāca vacanaṃ śrīmān sugrīvaḥ śokanāśanam.

1. But to Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, who was deeply afflicted by sorrow, the glorious Sugrīva spoke comforting words that dispel grief.
किं त्वं संतप्यसे वीर यथान्यः प्राकृतस्तथा ।
मैवं भूस्त्यज संतापं कृतघ्न इव सौहृदम् ॥२॥
2. kiṃ tvaṃ saṃtapyase vīra yathānyaḥ prākṛtastathā ,
maivaṃ bhūstyaja saṃtāpaṃ kṛtaghna iva sauhṛdam.
2. kim tvam saṃtapyase vīra yathā anyaḥ prākṛtaḥ tathā
mā evam bhūḥ tyaja saṃtāpam kṛtaghnaḥ iva sauhṛdam
2. vīra kim tvam yathā anyaḥ prākṛtaḥ tathā saṃtapyase
mā evam bhūḥ saṃtāpam tyaja kṛtaghnaḥ iva sauhṛdam
2. Why do you torment yourself, O hero, like any common person would? Do not be like this; abandon your distress, just as an ungrateful person abandons friendship.
संतापस्य च ते स्थानं न हि पश्यामि राघव ।
प्रवृत्ताव् उपलब्धायां ज्ञाते च निलये रिपोः ॥३॥
3. saṃtāpasya ca te sthānaṃ na hi paśyāmi rāghava ,
pravṛttāv upalabdhāyāṃ jñāte ca nilaye ripoḥ.
3. saṃtāpasya ca te sthānam na hi paśyāmi rāghava
pravṛttau upalabdāyām jñāte ca nilaye ripoḥ
3. rāghava te saṃtāpasya sthānam na hi paśyāmi ca

3. O Rāghava, I indeed see no reason for your distress now that information has been obtained and the enemy's dwelling place is known.
धृतिमाञ् शास्त्रवित् प्राज्ञः पण्डितश्चासि राघव ।
त्यजेमां पापिकां बुद्धिं कृत्वात्मेवार्थदूषणीम् ॥४॥
4. dhṛtimāñ śāstravit prājñaḥ paṇḍitaścāsi rāghava ,
tyajemāṃ pāpikāṃ buddhiṃ kṛtvātmevārthadūṣaṇīm.
4. dhṛtimān śāstravit prājñaḥ paṇḍitaḥ ca asi rāghava
tyaja imām pāpikām buddhim kṛtvā ātmā iva arthadūṣaṇīm
4. rāghava dhṛtimān śāstravit prājñaḥ paṇḍitaḥ ca asi
imām pāpikām buddhim tyaja kṛtvā ātmā iva arthadūṣaṇīm
4. O Rāghava, you are resolute, knowledgeable in scriptures, wise, and learned. Abandon this sinful thought, which is like a flaw that corrupts your own inner self (ātman).
समुद्रं लङ्घयित्वा तु महानक्रसमाकुलम् ।
लङ्कामारोहयिष्यामो हनिष्यामश्च ते रिपुम् ॥५॥
5. samudraṃ laṅghayitvā tu mahānakrasamākulam ,
laṅkāmārohayiṣyāmo haniṣyāmaśca te ripum.
5. samudram laṅghayitvā tu mahānakrasamākulam
laṅkām ārohajiṣyāmaḥ haniṣyāmaḥ ca te ripum
5. tu mahānakrasamākulam samudram laṅghayitvā
laṅkām ārohajiṣyāmaḥ ca te ripum haniṣyāmaḥ
5. Indeed, having crossed the ocean, which is crowded with mighty crocodiles, we will reach Laṅkā and kill your enemy.
निरुत्साहस्य दीनस्य शोकपर्याकुलात्मनः ।
सर्वार्था व्यवसीदन्ति व्यसनं चाधिगच्छति ॥६॥
6. nirutsāhasya dīnasya śokaparyākulātmanaḥ ,
sarvārthā vyavasīdanti vyasanaṃ cādhigacchati.
6. niruttsāhasya dīnasya śokaparyākulātmanaḥ
sarvārthāḥ vyavasīdanti vyasanam ca adhigacchati
6. niruttsāhasya dīnasya śokaparyākulātmanaḥ
sarvārthāḥ vyavasīdanti ca vyasanam adhigacchati
6. For one who is without enthusiasm, miserable, and whose inner self (ātman) is agitated by sorrow, all endeavors fail, and misfortune surely befalls them.
इमे शूराः समर्थाश्च सर्वे नो हरियूथपाः ।
त्वत्प्रियार्थं कृतोत्साहाः प्रवेष्टुमपि पावकम् ॥७॥
7. ime śūrāḥ samarthāśca sarve no hariyūthapāḥ ,
tvatpriyārthaṃ kṛtotsāhāḥ praveṣṭumapi pāvakam.
7. ime śūrāḥ samarthāḥ ca sarve naḥ hariyūthapāḥ
tvatpriyārtham kṛtotsāhāḥ praveṣṭum api pāvakam
7. ime naḥ sarve hariyūthapāḥ śūrāḥ ca samarthāḥ
tvatpriyārtham pāvakam api praveṣṭum kṛtotsāhāḥ
7. These brave and capable commanders of our monkey army are all highly motivated to enter even fire for your sake.
एषां हर्षेण जानामि तर्कश्चास्मिन्दृढो मम ।
विक्रमेण समानेष्ये सीतां हत्वा यथा रिपुम् ॥८॥
8. eṣāṃ harṣeṇa jānāmi tarkaścāsmindṛḍho mama ,
vikrameṇa samāneṣye sītāṃ hatvā yathā ripum.
8. eṣām harṣeṇa jānāmi tarkaḥ ca asmin dṛḍhaḥ mama
vikrameṇa samāneṣye sītām hatvā yathā ripum
8. eṣām harṣeṇa jānāmi ca mama asmin tarkaḥ dṛḍhaḥ
vikrameṇa ripum hatvā sītām yathā samāneṣye
8. From their enthusiasm, I know, and my conviction in this matter is firm: I shall bring back Sītā by my valor, just as I will slay the enemy.
सेतुरत्र यथा वध्येद् यथा पश्येम तां पुरीम् ।
तस्य राक्षसराजस्य तथा त्वं कुरु राघव ॥९॥
9. seturatra yathā vadhyed yathā paśyema tāṃ purīm ,
tasya rākṣasarājasya tathā tvaṃ kuru rāghava.
9. setuḥ atra yathā vadhyet yathā paśyema tām purīm
tasya rākṣasarājasya tathā tvam kuru rāghava
9. rāghava,
atra setuḥ yathā vadhyet yathā ca tasya rākṣasarājasya tām purīm paśyema tathā tvam kuru
9. O Rāghava, please arrange things here so that a bridge may be constructed, and we may see that city belonging to the king of the rākṣasas (demons).
दृष्ट्वा तां हि पुरीं लङ्कां त्रिकूटशिखरे स्थिताम् ।
हतं च रावणं युद्धे दर्शनादुपधारय ॥१०॥
10. dṛṣṭvā tāṃ hi purīṃ laṅkāṃ trikūṭaśikhare sthitām ,
hataṃ ca rāvaṇaṃ yuddhe darśanādupadhāraya.
10. dṛṣṭvā tām hi purīm laṅkām trikūṭaśikhare sthitām
hatam ca rāvaṇam yuddhe darśanāt upadhāraya
10. hi tām trikūṭaśikhare sthitām purīm laṅkām ca
yuddhe hatam rāvaṇam dṛṣṭvā darśanāt upadhāraya
10. Indeed, having seen that city of Laṅkā, situated on the Trikūṭa peak, and Rāvaṇa slain in battle, you should infer this simply by observing.
सेतुबद्धः समुद्रे च यावल् लङ्का समीपतः ।
सर्वं तीर्णं च वै सैन्यं जितमित्युपधार्यताम् ॥११॥
11. setubaddhaḥ samudre ca yāval laṅkā samīpataḥ ,
sarvaṃ tīrṇaṃ ca vai sainyaṃ jitamityupadhāryatām.
11. setubaddhaḥ samudre ca yāvat laṅkā samīpataḥ sarvam
tīrṇam ca vai sainyam jitam iti upadhāryatām
11. yāvat setubaddhaḥ samudre ca laṅkā samīpataḥ ca
vai sarvam sainyam tīrṇam iti jitam upadhāryatām
11. Since the bridge has been built across the ocean, and Laṅkā is close by, the entire army has crossed, and it should be considered conquered.
इमे हि समरे शूरा हरयः कामरूपिणः ।
तदलं विक्लवा बुद्धी राजन् सर्वार्थनाशनी ॥१२॥
12. ime hi samare śūrā harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ,
tadalaṃ viklavā buddhī rājan sarvārthanāśanī.
12. ime hi samare śūrāḥ harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ tat
alam viklavā buddhiḥ rājan sarvārthanāśanī
12. rājan hi ime śūrāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ harayaḥ samare
tat alam viklavā sarvārthanāśanī buddhiḥ
12. Indeed, these heroes, the monkeys (harayaḥ), are shape-shifters (kāmarūpiṇaḥ) in battle. Therefore, enough with such a dejected mindset, O King, which destroys all goals.
पुरुषस्य हि लोके ऽस्मिञ् शोकः शौर्यापकर्षणः ।
यत्तु कार्यं मनुष्येण शौण्डीर्यमवलम्बता ।
शूराणां हि मनुष्याणां त्वद्विधानां महात्मनाम् ॥१३॥
13. puruṣasya hi loke'smiñ śokaḥ śauryāpakarṣaṇaḥ ,
yattu kāryaṃ manuṣyeṇa śauṇḍīryamavalambatā ,
śūrāṇāṃ hi manuṣyāṇāṃ tvadvidhānāṃ mahātmanām.
13. puruṣasya hi loke asmin śokaḥ
śauryāpakarṣaṇaḥ yat tu kāryam manuṣyeṇa
śauṇḍīryam avalambatā śūrāṇām hi
manuṣyāṇām tvadvidhānām mahātmanām
13. hi asmin loke puruṣasya śokaḥ
śauryāpakarṣaṇaḥ tu yat manuṣyeṇa
śauṇḍīryam avalambatā kāryam hi śūrāṇām
manuṣyāṇām tvadvidhānām mahātmanām
13. Indeed, in this world, for a person (puruṣa), sorrow diminishes courage. But what should be done by a human (manuṣya) who embraces valor? For heroes, for great-souled individuals (mahātmanām) like you.
विनष्टे वा प्रनष्टे वा शोकः सर्वार्थनाशनः ।
त्वं तु बुद्धिमतां श्रेष्ठः सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदः ॥१४॥
14. vinaṣṭe vā pranaṣṭe vā śokaḥ sarvārthanāśanaḥ ,
tvaṃ tu buddhimatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvaśāstrārthakovidaḥ.
14. vinaṣṭe vā pranaṣṭe vā śokaḥ sarvārthanāśanaḥ tvam
tu buddhimatām śreṣṭhaḥ sarvaśāstrārthakovidaḥ
14. vinaṣṭe vā pranaṣṭe vā śokaḥ sarvārthanāśanaḥ tu
tvam buddhimatām śreṣṭhaḥ sarvaśāstrārthakovidaḥ
14. Whether something is destroyed or completely lost, sorrow (śoka) is the destroyer of all objectives. But you are the best among the intelligent, proficient in the meaning of all scriptures.
मद्विधैः सचिवैः सार्थमरिं जेतुमिहार्हसि ।
न हि पश्याम्यहं कं चित्त्रिषु लोकेषु राघव ॥१५॥
15. madvidhaiḥ sacivaiḥ sārthamariṃ jetumihārhasi ,
na hi paśyāmyahaṃ kaṃ cittriṣu lokeṣu rāghava.
15. madvidhaiḥ sacivaiḥ sārtham arim jetum iha arhasi
na hi paśyāmi aham kam cit triṣu lokeṣu rāghava
15. rāghava iha madvidhaiḥ sacivaiḥ sārtham arim jetum
arhasi hi aham triṣu lokeṣu kam cit na paśyāmi
15. You ought to conquer the enemy here, accompanied by ministers like me. Indeed, O Rāghava, I do not see anyone in the three worlds who could oppose you.
गृहीतधनुषो यस्ते तिष्ठेदभिमुखो रणे ।
वानरेषु समासक्तं न ते कार्यं विपत्स्यते ॥१६॥
16. gṛhītadhanuṣo yaste tiṣṭhedabhimukho raṇe ,
vānareṣu samāsaktaṃ na te kāryaṃ vipatsyate.
16. gṛhītadhanuṣaḥ yaḥ te tiṣṭhet abhimukhaḥ raṇe
vānareṣu samāsaktam na te kāryam vipatstyate
16. yaḥ gṛhītadhanuṣaḥ te abhimukhaḥ raṇe tiṣṭhet
te kāryam vānareṣu samāsaktam na vipatstyate
16. No one, having taken up a bow, would stand confronting you in battle. Your objective, involving the monkeys, will not fail.
अचिराद्द्रक्ष्यसे सीतां तीर्त्वा सागरमक्षयम् ।
तदलं शोकमालम्ब्य क्रोधमालम्ब भूपते ॥१७॥
17. acirāddrakṣyase sītāṃ tīrtvā sāgaramakṣayam ,
tadalaṃ śokamālambya krodhamālamba bhūpate.
17. acirāt drakṣyase sītām tīrtvā sāgaram akṣayam
tat alam śokam ālambya krodham ālamba bhūpate
17. bhūpate acirāt akṣayam sāgaram tīrtvā sītām
drakṣyase tat śokam ālambya alam krodham ālamba
17. Soon you will see Sita, having crossed the unfathomable ocean. Therefore, enough of resorting to sorrow, O King, take hold of anger!
निश्चेष्टाः क्षत्रिया मन्दाः सर्वे चण्डस्य बिभ्यति ।
लङ्गनार्थं च घोरस्य समुद्रस्य नदीपतेः ॥१८॥
18. niśceṣṭāḥ kṣatriyā mandāḥ sarve caṇḍasya bibhyati ,
laṅganārthaṃ ca ghorasya samudrasya nadīpateḥ.
18. niśceṣṭāḥ kṣatriyāḥ mandāḥ sarve caṇḍasya bibhyati
laṅghanārtham ca ghorasya samudrasya nadīpateḥ
18. sarve kṣatriyāḥ niśceṣṭāḥ mandāḥ ca te caṇḍasya
bibhyati ca laṅghanārtham ghorasya samudrasya nadīpateḥ
18. All kshatriyas are inactive and sluggish; they all fear the fierce one. And for the purpose of crossing the dreadful ocean, the lord of rivers...
सहास्माभिरिहोपेतः सूक्ष्मबुद्धिर्विचारय ।
इमे हि समरे शूरा हरयः कामरूपिणः ॥१९॥
19. sahāsmābhirihopetaḥ sūkṣmabuddhirvicāraya ,
ime hi samare śūrā harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ.
19. saha asmābhiḥ iha upetaḥ sūkṣmabuddhiḥ vicāraya
ime hi samare śūrāḥ harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ
19. sūkṣmabuddhiḥ asmābhiḥ saha iha upetaḥ vicāraya
hi ime kāmarūpiṇaḥ harayaḥ samare śūrāḥ
19. O keen-minded one, who has joined us here, consider this: these monkeys are indeed brave in battle and capable of assuming any form at will.
तानरीन् विधमिष्यन्ति शिलापादपवृष्टिभिः ।
कथं चित् परिपश्यामस्ते वयं वरुणालयम् ॥२०॥
20. tānarīn vidhamiṣyanti śilāpādapavṛṣṭibhiḥ ,
kathaṃ cit paripaśyāmaste vayaṃ varuṇālayam.
20. tān arīn vidhamiṣyanti śilāpādapavṛṣṭibhiḥ
kathaṃ cit paripaśyāmaḥ te vayam varuṇālayam
20. śilāpādapavṛṣṭibhiḥ tān arīn vidhamiṣyanti
vayam kathaṃ cit te varuṇālayam paripaśyāmaḥ
20. They will destroy those enemies with a shower of stones and trees. We must somehow find a way to observe the abode of Varuṇa (the ocean).
किमुक्त्वा बहुधा चापि
सर्वथा विजयी भवान् ॥२१॥
21. kimuktvā bahudhā cāpi
sarvathā vijayī bhavān.
21. kim uktvā bahudhā ca api
sarvathā vijayī bhavān
21. bahudhā uktvā kim ca api
bhavān sarvathā vijayī
21. What is the need to say much? You are bound to be victorious in every way.
