तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वालिसूनुरभाषत ।
जाम्बवत्प्रमुखान् सर्वाननुज्ञाप्य महाकपीन् ॥१॥

1. Having heard his words, Vāli's son (Aṅgada) spoke, having obtained permission from all the great monkeys, with Jāmbavat as their chief.
अस्मिन्नेवंगते कार्ये भवतां च निवेदिते ।
न्याय्यं स्म सह वैदेह्या द्रष्टुं तौ पार्थिवात्मजौ ॥२॥
2. asminnevaṃgate kārye bhavatāṃ ca nivedite ,
nyāyyaṃ sma saha vaidehyā draṣṭuṃ tau pārthivātmajau.
2. asmin evamgate kārye bhavatām ca nivedite nyāyyam
sma saha vaidehyā draṣṭum tau pārthivātmajau

2. Now that this task has proceeded thus and has been reported to you all, it is indeed proper for us to see those two sons of the king along with Vaidehī.
अहमेको ऽपि पर्याप्तः सराक्षसगणां पुरीम् ।
तां लङ्कां तरसा हन्तुं रावणं च महाबलम् ॥३॥
3. ahameko'pi paryāptaḥ sarākṣasagaṇāṃ purīm ,
tāṃ laṅkāṃ tarasā hantuṃ rāvaṇaṃ ca mahābalam.
3. aham ekaḥ api paryāptaḥ sarākṣasagaṇām purīm
tām laṅkām tarasā hantum rāvaṇam ca mahābalam
3. aham ekaḥ api paryāptaḥ tām laṅkām sarākṣasagaṇām
ca mahābalam rāvaṇam tarasā hantum
3. Even I alone am capable of forcefully destroying that city of Laṅkā, along with its hordes of rākṣasas, and the mighty Rāvaṇa.
किं पुनः सहितो वीरैर्बलवद्भिः कृतात्मभिः ।
कृतास्त्रैः प्लवगैः शक्तैर्भवद्भिर्विजयैषिभिः ॥४॥
4. kiṃ punaḥ sahito vīrairbalavadbhiḥ kṛtātmabhiḥ ,
kṛtāstraiḥ plavagaiḥ śaktairbhavadbhirvijayaiṣibhiḥ.
4. kim punaḥ sahitaḥ vīraiḥ balavadbhiḥ kṛtātmabhiḥ
kṛtāstraiḥ plavagaiḥ śaktaiḥ bhavadbhiḥ vijayaiṣibhiḥ
4. kim punaḥ vīraiḥ balavadbhiḥ kṛtātmabhiḥ kṛtāstraiḥ
plavagaiḥ śaktaiḥ vijayaiṣibhiḥ bhavadbhiḥ sahitaḥ
4. How much more then (will I be capable) when accompanied by you all, the heroic, powerful, self-controlled, weapon-skilled, capable vānaras who desire victory?
अहं तु रावणं युद्धे ससैन्यं सपुरःसरम् ।
सपुत्रं विधमिष्यामि सहोदरयुतं युधि ॥५॥
5. ahaṃ tu rāvaṇaṃ yuddhe sasainyaṃ sapuraḥsaram ,
saputraṃ vidhamiṣyāmi sahodarayutaṃ yudhi.
5. aham tu rāvaṇam yuddhe sasainyam sapuraḥsaram
saputram vidhamiṣyāmi sahodarayutam yudhi
5. aham tu rāvaṇam sasainyam sapuraḥsaram saputram
sahodarayutam yuddhe yudhi vidhamiṣyāmi
5. But I will destroy Rāvaṇa in battle, along with his army, his commanders, his sons, and his brothers, in combat.
ब्राह्ममैन्द्रं च रौद्रं च वायव्यं वारुणं तथा ।
यदि शक्रजितो ऽस्त्राणि दुर्निरीक्ष्याणि संयुगे ।
तान्यहं विधमिष्यामि निहनिष्यामि राक्षसान् ॥६॥
6. brāhmamaindraṃ ca raudraṃ ca vāyavyaṃ vāruṇaṃ tathā ,
yadi śakrajito'strāṇi durnirīkṣyāṇi saṃyuge ,
tānyahaṃ vidhamiṣyāmi nihaniṣyāmi rākṣasān.
6. brāhmam aindram ca raudram ca vāyavyam
vāruṇam tathā yadi śakrajitaḥ
astrāṇi durnirīkṣyāṇi saṃyuge tāni
aham vidhamiṣyāmi nihaniṣyāmi rākṣasān
6. yadi saṃyuge śakrajitaḥ astrāṇi brāhmam aindram ca raudram ca vāyavyam vāruṇam tathā durnirīkṣyāṇi (bhavanti),
tāni aham vidhamiṣyāmi (ca) rākṣasān nihaniṣyāmi
6. Even if the weapons of Indrajit - including those from Brahmā, Indra, Rudra, Vāyu, and Varuṇa - are difficult to withstand in battle, I will destroy them and kill all the rākṣasas.
भवतामभ्यनुज्ञातो
विक्रमो मे रुणद्धि तम् ॥७॥
7. bhavatāmabhyanujñāto
vikramo me ruṇaddhi tam.
7. bhavatām abhyanujñātaḥ
vikramaḥ me ruṇaddhi tam
7. भवताम् अभ्यनुज्ञातः मे
विक्रमः तम् रुणद्धि
7. My prowess, once sanctioned by you, will certainly restrain him.
मयातुला विसृष्टा हि शैलवृष्टिर्निरन्तरा ।
देवानपि रणे हन्यात् किं पुनस्तान्निशाचरान् ॥८॥
8. mayātulā visṛṣṭā hi śailavṛṣṭirnirantarā ,
devānapi raṇe hanyāt kiṃ punastānniśācarān.
8. mayā atulā visṛṣṭā hi śailavṛṣṭiḥ nirantarā
devān api raṇe hanyāt kim punaḥ tān niśācarān
8. mayā visṛṣṭā atulā hi nirantarā śailavṛṣṭiḥ
raṇe devān api hanyāt kim punaḥ tān niśācarān
8. Indeed, an unequalled and continuous rain of mountains unleashed by me would kill even the gods in battle; what then of those night-stalkers (rākṣasas)?
सागरो ऽप्यतियाद्वेलां मन्दरः प्रचलेदपि ।
न जाम्बवन्तं समरे कम्पयेदरिवाहिनी ॥९॥
9. sāgaro'pyatiyādvelāṃ mandaraḥ pracaledapi ,
na jāmbavantaṃ samare kampayedarivāhinī.
9. sāgaraḥ api atiyāt velām mandaraḥ pracalet
api na jāmbavantam samare kampayet arivāhinī
9. sāgaraḥ api velām atiyāt,
mandaraḥ api pracalet; (किन्तु) arivāhinī samare jāmbavantam na kampayet
9. Even the ocean might exceed its boundaries, and Mount Mandara might shift, but an army of enemies would not be able to make Jambavan waver in battle.
सर्वराक्षससंघानां राक्षसा ये च पूर्वकाः ।
अलमेको विनाशाय वीरो वायुसुतः कपिः ॥१०॥
10. sarvarākṣasasaṃghānāṃ rākṣasā ye ca pūrvakāḥ ,
alameko vināśāya vīro vāyusutaḥ kapiḥ.
10. sarvarākṣasasaṃghānām rākṣasāḥ ye ca pūrvakāḥ
alam ekaḥ vināśāya vīraḥ vāyusutaḥ kapiḥ
10. vīraḥ vāyusutaḥ kapiḥ ekaḥ sarvarākṣasasaṃghānām
ye ca pūrvakāḥ rākṣasāḥ vināśāya alam
10. The heroic monkey, son of Vayu, alone is sufficient for the destruction of all demon hosts, including those ancient demons.
पनसस्योरुवेगेन नीलस्य च महात्मनः ।
मन्दरो ऽप्यवशीर्येत किं पुनर्युधि राक्षसाः ॥११॥
11. panasasyoruvegena nīlasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
mandaro'pyavaśīryeta kiṃ punaryudhi rākṣasāḥ.
11. panasasya uruvegena nīlasya ca mahātmanaḥ
mandaraḥ api avaśīryeta kim punaḥ yudhi rākṣasāḥ
11. panasasya nīlasya ca mahātmanaḥ uruvegena
mandaraḥ api avaśīryeta kim punaḥ rākṣasāḥ yudhi
11. By the immense power of Panasa and the great-souled Nīla, even Mount Mandara would crumble. How much more so the demons in battle?
सदेवासुरयुद्धेषु गन्धर्वोरगपक्षिषु ।
मैन्दस्य प्रतियोद्धारं शंसत द्विविदस्य वा ॥१२॥
12. sadevāsurayuddheṣu gandharvoragapakṣiṣu ,
maindasya pratiyoddhāraṃ śaṃsata dvividasya vā.
12. sadevāsurayuddheṣu gandharvoragapakṣiṣu
maindasya pratiyoddhāram śaṃsata dvividasya vā
12. maindasya vā dvividasya pratiyoddhāram
sadevāsurayuddheṣu gandharvoragapakṣiṣu śaṃsata
12. Declare an opponent for Mainda or Dvivida, even from among the battles involving gods and asuras, or from among the gandharvas, nāgas (serpents), and birds.
अश्विपुत्रौ महावेगावेतौ प्लवगसत्तमौ ।
पितामहवरोत्सेकात् परमं दर्पमास्थितौ ॥१३॥
13. aśviputrau mahāvegāvetau plavagasattamau ,
pitāmahavarotsekāt paramaṃ darpamāsthitau.
13. aśviputrau mahāvegau etau plavagasattamau
pitāmaha-varotsekāt paramam darpam āsthitau
13. etau aśviputrau mahāvegau plavagasattamau
pitāmaha-varotsekāt paramam darpam āsthitau
13. These two, the Ashvinikumara sons and best of monkeys, possessing great speed, are filled with supreme arrogance due to the boon granted by Brahmā (pitāmaha).
अश्विनोर्माननार्थं हि सर्वलोकपितामहः ।
सर्वावध्यत्वमतुलमनयोर्दत्तवान्पुरा ॥१४॥
14. aśvinormānanārthaṃ hi sarvalokapitāmahaḥ ,
sarvāvadhyatvamatulamanayordattavānpurā.
14. aśvinoḥ mānanārtham hi sarvalokapitāmahaḥ
sarvāvadhya-tvam atulam anayoḥ dattavān purā
14. sarvalokapitāmahaḥ hi purā aśvinoḥ mānanārtham
anayoḥ atulam sarvāvadhya-tvam dattavān
14. Indeed, in the past, the progenitor of all beings (Brahmā) bestowed upon these two (the Aśvins) unequalled invulnerability from all, in order to honor them.
वरोत्सेकेन मत्तौ च प्रमथ्य महतीं चमूम् ।
सुराणाममृतं वीरौ पीतवन्तौ प्लवंगमौ ॥१५॥
15. varotsekena mattau ca pramathya mahatīṃ camūm ,
surāṇāmamṛtaṃ vīrau pītavantau plavaṃgamau.
15. vara-utsekena mattau ca pramathya mahatīm camūm
surāṇām amṛtam vīrau pītavantau plavaṃgamau
15. ca vara-utsekena mattau vīrau plavaṃgamau
mahatīm camūm pramathya surāṇām amṛtam pītavantau
15. And those two monkey heroes, arrogant from the power of their boons, having utterly defeated a great army, then drank the gods' nectar (amṛta).
एतावेव हि संक्रुद्धौ सवाजिरथकुञ्जराम् ।
लङ्कां नाशयितुं शक्तौ सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु वानराः ॥१६॥
16. etāveva hi saṃkruddhau savājirathakuñjarām ,
laṅkāṃ nāśayituṃ śaktau sarve tiṣṭhantu vānarāḥ.
16. etau eva hi saṃkruddhau sa-vāji-ratha-kuñjarām
laṅkām nāśayitum śaktau sarve tiṣṭhantu vānarāḥ
16. hi etau eva saṃkruddhau sa-vāji-ratha-kuñjarām
laṅkām nāśayitum śaktau sarve vānarāḥ tiṣṭhantu
16. Indeed, these two, if they become utterly enraged, are capable of destroying Laṅkā, including its horses, chariots, and elephants. All you monkeys should remain still.
अयुक्तं तु विना देवीं दृष्टबद्भिः प्लवंगमाः ।
समीपं गन्तुमस्माभी राघवस्य महात्मनः ॥१७॥
17. ayuktaṃ tu vinā devīṃ dṛṣṭabadbhiḥ plavaṃgamāḥ ,
samīpaṃ gantumasmābhī rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ.
17. ayuktam tu vinā devīm dṛṣṭavadhbhiḥ plavaṃgamāḥ
samīpam gantum asmābhiḥ rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ
17. tu plavaṃgamāḥ asmābhiḥ vinā devīm dṛṣṭavadhbhiḥ
mahātmanaḥ rāghavasya samīpam gantum ayuktam
17. But O monkeys, it is improper for us to approach the great-souled Rāma without having seen the goddess (Sītā).
दृष्टा देवी न चानीता इति तत्र निवेदनम् ।
अयुक्तमिव पश्यामि भवद्भिः ख्यातविक्रमैः ॥१८॥
18. dṛṣṭā devī na cānītā iti tatra nivedanam ,
ayuktamiva paśyāmi bhavadbhiḥ khyātavikramaiḥ.
18. dṛṣṭā devī na ca ānītā iti tatra nivedanam
ayuktam iva paśyāmi bhavadbhiḥ khyātavikramaiḥ
18. bhavadbhiḥ khyātavikramaiḥ tatra devī dṛṣṭā
ca na ānītā iti nivedanam ayuktam iva paśyāmi
18. I consider it improper for you, who are renowned for your valor, that the report is merely 'the goddess was seen but not brought back'.
न हि वः प्लवते कश्चिन्नापि कश्चित् पराक्रमे ।
तुल्यः सामरदैत्येषु लोकेषु हरिसत्तमाः ॥१९॥
19. na hi vaḥ plavate kaścinnāpi kaścit parākrame ,
tulyaḥ sāmaradaityeṣu lokeṣu harisattamāḥ.
19. na hi vaḥ plavate kaścit na api kaścit parākrame
tulyaḥ sāmaradaityeṣu lokeṣu harisattamāḥ
19. harisattamāḥ vaḥ kaścit na hi plavate,
na api kaścit sāmaradaityeṣu lokeṣu parākrame tulyaḥ
19. Indeed, O best of monkeys, no one among you is superior in traversing (distances or obstacles), nor is anyone equal in valor in all the worlds, including those of gods and demons.
तेष्वेवं हतवीरेषु राक्षसेषु हनूमता ।
किमन्यदत्र कर्तव्यं गृहीत्वा याम जानकीम् ॥२०॥
20. teṣvevaṃ hatavīreṣu rākṣaseṣu hanūmatā ,
kimanyadatra kartavyaṃ gṛhītvā yāma jānakīm.
20. teṣu evam hatavīreṣu rākṣaseṣu hanūmatā kim
anyat atra kartavyam gṛhītvā yāma jānakīm
20. hanūmatā evam hatavīreṣu teṣu rākṣaseṣu atra
anyat kim kartavyam jānakīm gṛhītvā yāma
20. Since the Rākṣasas have had their warriors slain by Hanumān in this manner, what else remains to be done here? Let us take Janaki (Sita) and depart.
तमेवं कृतसंकल्पं जाम्बवान् हरिसत्तमः ।
उवाच परमप्रीतो वाक्यमर्थवदर्थवित् ॥२१॥
21. tamevaṃ kṛtasaṃkalpaṃ jāmbavān harisattamaḥ ,
uvāca paramaprīto vākyamarthavadarthavit.
21. tam evam kṛtasaṅkalpam jāmbavān harisattamaḥ
uvāca paramaprītaḥ vākyam arthavat arthavit
21. paramaprītaḥ arthavit harisattamaḥ jāmbavān,
evam kṛtasaṅkalpam tam,
arthavat vākyam uvāca
21. Jambavan, the chief of the monkeys, who was exceedingly pleased and understood the true meaning (of things), spoke a meaningful statement to him who was thus resolute.
न तावदेषा मतिरक्षमा नो यथा भवान्पश्यति राजपुत्र ।
यथा तु रामस्य मतिर्निविष्टा तथा भवान्पश्यतु कार्यसिद्धिम् ॥२२॥
22. na tāvadeṣā matirakṣamā no yathā bhavānpaśyati rājaputra ,
yathā tu rāmasya matirniviṣṭā tathā bhavānpaśyatu kāryasiddhim.
22. na tāvat eṣā matiḥ akṣamā naḥ
yathā bhavān paśyati rājaputra
yathā tu rāmasya matiḥ niviṣṭā
tathā bhavān paśyatu kāryasiddhim
22. rājaputra bhavān yathā naḥ eṣā matiḥ akṣamā paśyati,
tāvat na.
tu yathā rāmasya matiḥ niviṣṭā,
tathā bhavān kāryasiddhim paśyatu.
22. O prince, this plan of ours is not as unfeasible as you perceive. Instead, considering how Rama's resolve is fixed, you should foresee the successful completion of the endeavor.
