स तस्य मध्ये भवनस्य वानरो लतागृहांश्चित्रगृहान्निशागृहान् ।
जगाम सीतां प्रति दर्शनोत्सुको न चैव तां पश्यति चारुदर्शनाम् ॥१॥

1. That monkey (Hanumān), eager to see Sītā, searched through the various parts of that palace, including the arbors (latā-gṛhas), painted chambers (citra-gṛhas), and sleeping quarters (niśā-gṛhas), but he did not find her, the one with beautiful form.
स चिन्तयामास ततो महाकपिः प्रियामपश्यन् रघुनन्दनस्य ताम् ।
ध्रुवं नु सीता म्रियते यथा न मे विचिन्वतो दर्शनमेति मैथिली ॥२॥
2. sa cintayāmāsa tato mahākapiḥ priyāmapaśyan raghunandanasya tām ,
dhruvaṃ nu sītā mriyate yathā na me vicinvato darśanameti maithilī.

2. Then that great monkey (Hanumān), not finding her, the beloved of Raghu's descendant (Rāma), pondered: 'Surely Sītā is dead, since Maithilī does not appear to me, even as I search.'
सा राक्षसानां प्रवरेण बाला स्वशीलसंरक्षण तत् परा सती ।
अनेन नूनं प्रतिदुष्टकर्मणा हता भवेदार्यपथे परे स्थिता ॥३॥
3. sā rākṣasānāṃ pravareṇa bālā svaśīlasaṃrakṣaṇa tat parā satī ,
anena nūnaṃ pratiduṣṭakarmaṇā hatā bhavedāryapathe pare sthitā.

3. That young woman, intent on preserving her chastity and steadfast on the noble path, must surely have been killed by this extremely wicked demon.
विरूपरूपा विकृता विवर्चसो महानना दीर्घविरूपदर्शनाः ।
समीक्ष्य सा राक्षसराजयोषितो भयाद्विनष्टा जनकेश्वरात्मजा ॥४॥
4. virūparūpā vikṛtā vivarcaso mahānanā dīrghavirūpadarśanāḥ ,
samīkṣya sā rākṣasarājayoṣito bhayādvinaṣṭā janakeśvarātmajā.

4. Upon seeing the demon king's wives, who were hideous in form, deformed, lacking splendor, with massive mouths, and long, dreadful appearances, the daughter of the lord of Janaka (Sita) must have vanished out of fear.
सीतामदृष्ट्वा ह्यनवाप्य पौरुषं विहृत्य कालं सह वानरैश्चिरम् ।
न मे ऽस्ति सुग्रीवसमीपगा गतिः सुतीक्ष्णदण्डो बलवांश्च वानरः ॥५॥
5. sītāmadṛṣṭvā hyanavāpya pauruṣaṃ vihṛtya kālaṃ saha vānaraiściram ,
na me'sti sugrīvasamīpagā gatiḥ sutīkṣṇadaṇḍo balavāṃśca vānaraḥ.
5. sītām adṛṣṭvā hi anavāpya pauruṣam
vihṛtya kālam saha vānaraiḥ ciram
na me asti sugrīvasamīpagā gatiḥ
sutīkṣṇadaṇḍaḥ balavān ca vānaraḥ
5. Indeed, without having seen Sita and without having achieved my heroic purpose, having spent a long time with these monkeys, there is no returning to Sugriva for me. That powerful monkey metes out extremely harsh punishments.
दृष्टमन्तःपुरं सर्वं दृष्ट्वा रावणयोषितः ।
न सीता दृश्यते साध्वी वृथा जातो मम श्रमः ॥६॥
6. dṛṣṭamantaḥpuraṃ sarvaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇayoṣitaḥ ,
na sītā dṛśyate sādhvī vṛthā jāto mama śramaḥ.
6. dṛṣṭam antaḥpuram sarvam dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇayoṣitaḥ
na sītā dṛśyate sādhvī vṛthā jātaḥ mama śramaḥ
6. I have searched the entire inner palace, and I have seen Ravana's wives. But the chaste Sita is nowhere to be seen. My labor has been in vain.
किं नु मां वानराः सर्वे गतं वक्ष्यन्ति संगताः ।
गत्वा तत्र त्वया वीर किं कृतं तद्वदस्व नः ॥७॥
7. kiṃ nu māṃ vānarāḥ sarve gataṃ vakṣyanti saṃgatāḥ ,
gatvā tatra tvayā vīra kiṃ kṛtaṃ tadvadasva naḥ.
7. kim nu mām vānarāḥ sarve gatam vakṣyanti saṃgatāḥ
| gatvā tatra tvayā vīra kim kṛtam tat vadasva naḥ
7. What indeed will all the assembled monkeys say to me upon my return? (They will ask,) 'O hero, what did you accomplish there after going? Tell us that!'
अदृष्ट्वा किं प्रवक्ष्यामि तामहं जनकात्मजाम् ।
ध्रुवं प्रायमुपेष्यन्ति कालस्य व्यतिवर्तने ॥८॥
8. adṛṣṭvā kiṃ pravakṣyāmi tāmahaṃ janakātmajām ,
dhruvaṃ prāyamupeṣyanti kālasya vyativartane.
8. adṛṣṭvā kim pravakṣyāmi tām aham janakātmajām
| dhruvam prāyam upeṣyanti kālasya vyativartane
8. What shall I say if I have not seen Janaka's daughter (Sītā)? If I return without her, they will surely undertake a fast unto death (prāya) when time passes without success.
किं वा वक्ष्यति वृद्धश्च जाम्बवानङ्गदश्च सः ।
गतं पारं समुद्रस्य वानराश्च समागताः ॥९॥
9. kiṃ vā vakṣyati vṛddhaśca jāmbavānaṅgadaśca saḥ ,
gataṃ pāraṃ samudrasya vānarāśca samāgatāḥ.
9. kim vā vakṣyati vṛddhaḥ ca jāmbavān aṅgadaḥ ca
saḥ | gatam pāram samudrasya vānarāḥ ca samāgatāḥ
9. What will the aged Jambavan and Angada say? (They will ask,) 'You have crossed the ocean and the monkeys have assembled (awaiting your news)?'
अनिर्वेदः श्रियो मूलमनिर्वेदः परं सुखम् ।
भूयस्तावद्विचेष्यामि न यत्र विचयः कृतः ॥१०॥
10. anirvedaḥ śriyo mūlamanirvedaḥ paraṃ sukham ,
bhūyastāvadviceṣyāmi na yatra vicayaḥ kṛtaḥ.
10. anirvedaḥ śriyaḥ mūlam anirvedaḥ param sukham
| bhūyaḥ tāvat viceṣyāmi na yatra vicayaḥ kṛtaḥ
10. Perseverance (anirveda) is the root of prosperity, and perseverance (anirveda) is supreme happiness. Therefore, I will search again in those places where no search has yet been made.
अनिर्वेदो हि सततं सर्वार्थेषु प्रवर्तकः ।
करोति सफलं जन्तोः कर्म यच्च करोति सः ॥११॥
11. anirvedo hi satataṃ sarvārtheṣu pravartakaḥ ,
karoti saphalaṃ jantoḥ karma yacca karoti saḥ.
11. anirvedaḥ hi satatam sarvārtheṣu pravartakaḥ
karoti saphalam jantoḥ karma yat ca karoti saḥ
11. hi anirvedaḥ satatam sarvārtheṣu pravartakaḥ
saḥ jantoḥ yat karma karoti ca saphalam karoti
11. Indeed, constant perseverance (anirveda) propels one in all endeavors. It renders fruitful the action (karma) that a being undertakes.
तस्मादनिर्वेद कृतं यत्नं चेष्टे ऽहमुत्तमम् ।
अदृष्टांश्च विचेष्यामि देशान् रावणपालितान् ॥१२॥
12. tasmādanirveda kṛtaṃ yatnaṃ ceṣṭe'hamuttamam ,
adṛṣṭāṃśca viceṣyāmi deśān rāvaṇapālitān.
12. tasmāt anirvedakṛtam yatnam ceṣṭe aham uttamam
adṛṣṭān ca viceṣyāmi deśān rāvaṇapālitān
12. tasmāt aham anirvedakṛtam uttamam yatnam
ceṣṭe ca adṛṣṭān rāvaṇapālitān deśān viceṣyāmi
12. Therefore, I shall exert an excellent effort, performed with unwavering determination (anirveda). And I will search the unseen lands ruled by Rāvaṇa.
आपानशालाविचितास्तथा पुष्पगृहाणि च ।
चित्रशालाश्च विचिता भूयः क्रीडागृहाणि च ॥१३॥
13. āpānaśālāvicitāstathā puṣpagṛhāṇi ca ,
citraśālāśca vicitā bhūyaḥ krīḍāgṛhāṇi ca.
13. āpānaśālāvicitāḥ tathā puṣpagṛhāṇi ca
citraśālāḥ ca vicitāḥ bhūyaḥ krīḍāgṛhāṇi ca
13. āpānaśālāvicitāḥ tathā puṣpagṛhāṇi ca

13. The taverns were searched, and likewise the flower houses. The art galleries were also searched, and further, the pleasure houses.
निष्कुटान्तररथ्याश्च विमानानि च सर्वशः ।
इति संचिन्त्य भूयो ऽपि विचेतुमुपचक्रमे ॥१४॥
14. niṣkuṭāntararathyāśca vimānāni ca sarvaśaḥ ,
iti saṃcintya bhūyo'pi vicetumupacakrame.
14. niṣkuṭāntararathyāḥ ca vimānāni ca sarvaśaḥ
iti saṃcintya bhūyaḥ api vicetum upacakrame
14. niṣkuṭāntararathyāḥ ca vimānāni ca sarvaśaḥ

14. And the inner paths within the groves, and the palaces everywhere (were searched). Having thus deliberated, he again commenced his search.
भूमीगृहांश्चैत्यगृहान् गृहातिगृहकानपि ।
उत्पतन्निपतंश्चापि तिष्ठन् गच्छन्पुनः क्व चित् ॥१५॥
15. bhūmīgṛhāṃścaityagṛhān gṛhātigṛhakānapi ,
utpatannipataṃścāpi tiṣṭhan gacchanpunaḥ kva cit.
15. bhūmīgṛhān ca caityagṛhān gṛhātigṛhakān api utpatat
nipatat ca api tiṣṭhan gacchan punaḥ kva cit
15. bhūmīgṛhān ca caityagṛhān gṛhātigṛhakān api utpatat
nipatat ca api tiṣṭhan gacchan punaḥ kva cit
15. He (Hanuman) explored subterranean chambers, shrine-like structures, and even small residences. Leaping up and descending, standing still, and moving on, he again went from one place to another.
अपावृण्वंश्च द्वाराणि कपाटान्यवघट्टयन् ।
प्रविशन्निष्पतंश्चापि प्रपतन्नुत्पतन्नपि ।
सर्वमप्यवकाशं स विचचार महाकपिः ॥१६॥
16. apāvṛṇvaṃśca dvārāṇi kapāṭānyavaghaṭṭayan ,
praviśanniṣpataṃścāpi prapatannutpatannapi ,
sarvamapyavakāśaṃ sa vicacāra mahākapiḥ.

avaghaṭṭayan praviśan niṣpatan ca
api prapatat utpatat api sarvam

16. Opening doors and rattling the door-panels, entering and exiting, falling down and leaping up - thus, that great ape (mahākapi) explored every available space.
चतुरङ्गुलमात्रो ऽपि नावकाशः स विद्यते ।
रावणान्तःपुरे तस्मिन्यं कपिर्न जगाम सः ॥१७॥
17. caturaṅgulamātro'pi nāvakāśaḥ sa vidyate ,
rāvaṇāntaḥpure tasminyaṃ kapirna jagāma saḥ.
17. caturaṅgulamātraḥ api na avakāśaḥ saḥ vidyate
rāvaṇāntaḥpure tasmin yam kapiḥ na jagāma saḥ
17. caturaṅgulamātraḥ api na avakāśaḥ saḥ vidyate

17. In Rāvaṇa's inner palace, there was no space, not even one of four fingers' breadth (ca. 3 inches), that the ape (kapi) did not visit.
प्राकरान्तररथ्याश्च वेदिकश्चैत्यसंश्रयाः ।
श्वभ्राश्च पुष्करिण्यश्च सर्वं तेनावलोकितम् ॥१८॥
18. prākarāntararathyāśca vedikaścaityasaṃśrayāḥ ,
śvabhrāśca puṣkariṇyaśca sarvaṃ tenāvalokitam.

śvabhrāḥ ca puṣkariṇyaḥ ca sarvam tena avalokitam

18. Inner streets within the ramparts, platforms near shrine-like structures, pits, and ponds - all these were thoroughly surveyed by him (Hanuman).
राक्षस्यो विविधाकारा विरूपा विकृतास्तथा ।
दृष्टा हनूमता तत्र न तु सा जनकात्मजा ॥१९॥
19. rākṣasyo vividhākārā virūpā vikṛtāstathā ,
dṛṣṭā hanūmatā tatra na tu sā janakātmajā.
19. rākṣasyaḥ vividhākārāḥ virūpāḥ vikṛtāḥ tathā
dṛṣṭā hanūmatā tatra na tu sā janakātmajā
19. Various kinds of demonesses (rākṣasī), hideous and disfigured, were seen there by Hanumān, but not that daughter of Janaka (Sītā).
रूपेणाप्रतिमा लोके वरा विद्याधर स्त्रियः ।
दृटा हनूमता तत्र न तु राघवनन्दिनी ॥२०॥
20. rūpeṇāpratimā loke varā vidyādhara striyaḥ ,
dṛṭā hanūmatā tatra na tu rāghavanandinī.
20. rūpeṇa apratimāḥ loke varāḥ vidyādhara striyaḥ
dṛṣṭā hanūmatā tatra na tu rāghavanandinī
20. Celestial women (vidyādharī) of unparalleled beauty in the world were seen there by Hanumān, but not the beloved of Rāghava (Sītā).
नागकन्या वरारोहाः पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाः ।
दृष्टा हनूमता तत्र न तु सीता सुमध्यमा ॥२१॥
21. nāgakanyā varārohāḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanāḥ ,
dṛṣṭā hanūmatā tatra na tu sītā sumadhyamā.
21. nāgakanyāḥ varārohāḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanāḥ
dṛṣṭā hanūmatā tatra na tu sītā sumadhyamā
21. Nāga maidens (nāgakanyā), with beautiful, shapely hips and faces resembling the full moon, were seen there by Hanumān, but not Sītā, the slender-waisted.
प्रमथ्य राक्षसेन्द्रेण नागकन्या बलाद्धृताः ।
दृष्टा हनूमता तत्र न सा जनकनन्दिनी ॥२२॥
22. pramathya rākṣasendreṇa nāgakanyā balāddhṛtāḥ ,
dṛṣṭā hanūmatā tatra na sā janakanandinī.
22. pramathya rākṣasendreṇa nāgakanyāḥ balāt dhṛtāḥ
dṛṣṭā hanūmatā tatra na sā janakanandinī
22. Celestial serpent maidens (nāgakanyā), forcibly abducted by the demon lord (rākṣasendra) after he had overpowered them, were seen there by Hanumān, but not that daughter of Janaka (Sītā).
सो ऽपश्यंस्तां महाबाहुः पश्यंश्चान्या वरस्त्रियः ।
विषसाद महाबाहुर्हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ॥२३॥
23. so'paśyaṃstāṃ mahābāhuḥ paśyaṃścānyā varastriyaḥ ,
viṣasāda mahābāhurhanūmānmārutātmajaḥ.
23. saḥ apaśyam tām mahābāhuḥ paśyan ca anyāḥ
varastriyaḥ viṣasāda mahābāhuḥ hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ
23. saḥ mahābāhuḥ tām apaśyam ca anyāḥ varastriyaḥ
paśyan mahābāhuḥ mārutātmajaḥ hanūmān viṣasāda
23. That mighty-armed [Hanumān], the son of Maruta, observing her (Sītā) and also seeing other excellent women, became greatly dejected.
उद्योगं वानरेन्द्राणं प्लवनं सागरस्य च ।
व्यर्थं वीक्ष्यानिलसुतश्चिन्तां पुनरुपागमत् ॥२४॥
24. udyogaṃ vānarendrāṇaṃ plavanaṃ sāgarasya ca ,
vyarthaṃ vīkṣyānilasutaścintāṃ punarupāgamat.
24. udyogam vānarendrāṇām plavanam sāgarasya ca
vyartham vīkṣya anilasutaḥ cintām punaḥ upāgamat
24. anilasutaḥ vānarendrāṇām udyogam ca sāgarasya
plavanam vyartham vīkṣya punaḥ cintām upāgamat
24. The son of Anil (Hanumān), seeing the endeavor of the monkey chiefs and the leaping across the ocean as futile, again fell into anxiety.
अवतीर्य विमानाच्च हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ।
चिन्तामुपजगामाथ शोकोपहतचेतनः ॥२५॥
25. avatīrya vimānācca hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ ,
cintāmupajagāmātha śokopahatacetanaḥ.
25. avatīrya vimānāt ca hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ
cintām upajagāma atha śokopahatacetanaḥ
25. atha mārutātmajaḥ hanūmān vimānāt ca

25. Having descended from the aerial chariot, Hanumān, the son of Maruta, then became overwhelmed by sorrow, his consciousness afflicted, and fell into deep anxiety.
