रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा हर्षपौरुषवर्धनम् ।
सुग्रीवः पूजयां चक्रे राघवं प्रशशंस च ॥१॥

असंशयं प्रज्वलितैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मर्मातिगैः शरैः ।
त्वं दहेः कुपितो लोकान्युगान्त इव भास्करः ॥२॥
2. asaṃśayaṃ prajvalitaistīkṣṇairmarmātigaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
tvaṃ daheḥ kupito lokānyugānta iva bhāskaraḥ.

2. Undoubtedly, with your blazing, sharp arrows that pierce vital points, you, when angered, could incinerate the worlds, just like the sun at the dissolution of an eon.
वालिनः पौरुषं यत्तद् यच्च वीर्यं धृतिश्च या ।
तन्ममैकमनाः श्रुत्वा विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम् ॥३॥
3. vālinaḥ pauruṣaṃ yattad yacca vīryaṃ dhṛtiśca yā ,
tanmamaikamanāḥ śrutvā vidhatsva yadanantaram.

3. Having heard about the valor, strength, and fortitude of Vālin, you, with your mind focused solely on me, should then determine what action is appropriate.
समुद्रात् पश्चिमात् पूर्वं दक्षिणादपि चोत्तरम् ।
क्रामत्यनुदिते सूर्ये वाली व्यपगतक्लमः ॥४॥
4. samudrāt paścimāt pūrvaṃ dakṣiṇādapi cottaram ,
krāmatyanudite sūrye vālī vyapagataklamaḥ.

4. Vali, whose fatigue has completely vanished, traverses from the western ocean to the eastern, and from the southern to the northern, even before the sun has risen.
अग्राण्यारुह्य शैलानां शिखराणि महान्त्यपि ।
ऊर्ध्वमुत्क्षिप्य तरसा प्रतिगृह्णाति वीर्यवान् ॥५॥
5. agrāṇyāruhya śailānāṃ śikharāṇi mahāntyapi ,
ūrdhvamutkṣipya tarasā pratigṛhṇāti vīryavān.

ūrdhvam utkṣipya tarasā pratigṛhṇāti vīryavān

5. The powerful (Vali), having ascended the summits of mountains, even great peaks, throws them forcefully upwards and then catches them again.
बहवः सारवन्तश्च वनेषु विविधा द्रुमाः ।
वालिना तरसा भग्ना बलं प्रथयतात्मनः ॥६॥
6. bahavaḥ sāravantaśca vaneṣu vividhā drumāḥ ,
vālinā tarasā bhagnā balaṃ prathayatātmanaḥ.

6. Many strong and diverse trees in the forests were forcefully broken by Vali, as he displayed his own formidable strength.
महिषो दुन्दुभिर्नाम कैलासशिखरप्रभः ।
बलं नागसहस्रस्य धारयामास वीर्यवान् ॥७॥
7. mahiṣo dundubhirnāma kailāsaśikharaprabhaḥ ,
balaṃ nāgasahasrasya dhārayāmāsa vīryavān.

balam nāgasahasrasya dhārayāmāsa vīryavān

7. A powerful buffalo named Dundubhi, radiant as the peak of Mount Kailasa, possessed the strength of a thousand elephants.
वीर्योत्सेकेन दुष्टात्मा वरदानाच्च मोहितः ।
जगाम स महाकायः समुद्रं सरितां पतिम् ॥८॥
8. vīryotsekena duṣṭātmā varadānācca mohitaḥ ,
jagāma sa mahākāyaḥ samudraṃ saritāṃ patim.
8. vīryotsekena duṣṭātmā varadānāt ca mohitaḥ
jagāma saḥ mahākāyaḥ samudram saritām patim

8. That large-bodied, evil-minded one, deluded by his excessive power and by the boon he received, went to the ocean, the lord of rivers.
ऊर्मिमन्तमतिक्रम्य सागरं रत्नसंचयम् ।
मम युद्धं प्रयच्छेति तमुवाच महार्णवम् ॥९॥
9. ūrmimantamatikramya sāgaraṃ ratnasaṃcayam ,
mama yuddhaṃ prayaccheti tamuvāca mahārṇavam.

9. Having crossed the wavy ocean, that treasury of jewels, he said to that great ocean, "Give me battle!"
ततः समुद्रो धर्मात्मा समुत्थाय महाबलः ।
अब्रवीद्वचनं राजन्नसुरं कालचोदितम् ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ samudro dharmātmā samutthāya mahābalaḥ ,
abravīdvacanaṃ rājannasuraṃ kālacoditam.
10. tataḥ samudraḥ dharmātmā samutthāya mahābalaḥ
abravīt vacanam rājan asuram kālacoditam
10. rājan,
tataḥ dharmātmā mahābalaḥ samudraḥ samutthāya,
kālacoditam asuram vacanam abravīt
10. Then the ocean, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness and who possessed great strength, having risen, spoke these words to the demon, O King, who was impelled by fate.
समर्थो नास्मि ते दातुं युद्धं युद्धविशारद ।
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि यस्ते युद्धं प्रदास्यति ॥११॥
11. samartho nāsmi te dātuṃ yuddhaṃ yuddhaviśārada ,
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi yaste yuddhaṃ pradāsyati.
11. samarthaḥ na asmi te dātum yuddham yuddhaviśārada
śrūyatām abhidhāsyāmi yaḥ te yuddham pradāsyati
11. yuddhaviśārada,
(aham) te yuddham dātum samarthaḥ na asmi śrūyatām (aham) te yaḥ yuddham pradāsyati (tam) abhidhāsyāmi
11. O expert in battle, I am not capable of giving you battle. Listen! I will tell you who will give you battle.
शैलराजो महारण्ये तपस्विशरणं परम् ।
शंकरश्वशुरो नाम्ना हिमवानिति विश्रुतः ॥१२॥
12. śailarājo mahāraṇye tapasviśaraṇaṃ param ,
śaṃkaraśvaśuro nāmnā himavāniti viśrutaḥ.
12. śailarājaḥ mahāraṇye tapasviśaraṇam param
śaṅkaraśvaśuraḥ nāmnā himavān iti viśrutaḥ

12. The king of mountains, known as Himavat, and renowned as Śaṅkara's father-in-law, is a supreme refuge for ascetics in the great forest.
गुहा प्रस्रवणोपेतो बहुकन्दरनिर्झरः ।
स समर्थस्तव प्रीतिमतुलां कर्तुमाहवे ॥१३॥
13. guhā prasravaṇopeto bahukandaranirjharaḥ ,
sa samarthastava prītimatulāṃ kartumāhave.

saḥ samarthaḥ tava prītim atulām kartum āhave
13. saḥ guhā prasravaṇopetaḥ bahukandaranirjharaḥ

13. That mountain (Himavat) is full of caves and springs, and possesses many ravines and waterfalls. He is capable of bringing you unequalled delight in battle.
तं भीतमिति विज्ञाय समुद्रमसुरोत्तमः ।
हिमवद्वनमागच्छच्छरश्चापादिव च्युतः ॥१४॥
14. taṃ bhītamiti vijñāya samudramasurottamaḥ ,
himavadvanamāgacchaccharaścāpādiva cyutaḥ.
14. tam bhītam iti vijñāya samudram asurottamaḥ
himavadvanaṃ āgacchat śaraḥ cāpāt iva cyutaḥ
14. asurottamaḥ tam samudram bhītam iti vijñāya,
śaraḥ cāpāt iva cyutaḥ,

14. Having understood that the ocean was terrified, the chief of the asuras (demons) hastened to Himavat's forest, like an arrow released from a bow.
ततस्तस्य गिरेः श्वेता गजेन्द्रविपुलाः शिलाः ।
चिक्षेप बहुधा भूमौ दुन्दुभिर्विननाद च ॥१५॥
15. tatastasya gireḥ śvetā gajendravipulāḥ śilāḥ ,
cikṣepa bahudhā bhūmau dundubhirvinanāda ca.
15. tataḥ tasya gireḥ śvetāḥ gajendravipulāḥ śilāḥ
cikṣepa bahudhā bhūmau dundubhiḥ vinanāda ca
15. tataḥ saḥ tasya gireḥ śvetāḥ gajendravipulāḥ
śilāḥ bhūmau bahudhā cikṣepa ca dundubhiḥ vinanāda
15. Then, he hurled enormous white rocks, massive as elephants, from that mountain onto the ground repeatedly, and the war-drum (dundubhi) resounded.
ततः श्वेताम्बुदाकारः सौम्यः प्रीतिकराकृतिः ।
हिमवानब्रवीद्वाक्यं स्व एव शिखरे स्थितः ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ śvetāmbudākāraḥ saumyaḥ prītikarākṛtiḥ ,
himavānabravīdvākyaṃ sva eva śikhare sthitaḥ.
16. tataḥ śvetāmbuḍākāraḥ saumyaḥ prītikarakṛtiḥ
himavān abravīt vākyam sva eva śikhare sthitaḥ
16. tataḥ śvetāmbuḍākāraḥ saumyaḥ prītikarakṛtiḥ
himavān sva eva śikhare sthitaḥ vākyam abravīt
16. Then, Himavat, gentle and pleasing in form like white clouds, spoke these words while standing on his own peak.
क्लेष्टुमर्हसि मां न त्वं दुन्दुभे धर्मवत्सल ।
रणकर्मस्वकुशलस्तपस्विशरणं ह्यहम् ॥१७॥
17. kleṣṭumarhasi māṃ na tvaṃ dundubhe dharmavatsala ,
raṇakarmasvakuśalastapasviśaraṇaṃ hyaham.
17. kleṣṭum arhasi mām na tvam dundubhe dharmavatsala
raṇakarmasu akuśalaḥ tapasviśaraṇam hi aham
17. dundubhe dharmavatsala tvam mām kleṣṭum na arhasi
hi aham raṇakarmasu akuśalaḥ tapasviśaraṇam
17. O Dundubhi, you who are devoted to righteousness (dharma), you should not trouble me. For I am unskilled in warfare and am a refuge for ascetics.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा गिरिराजस्य धीमतः ।
उवाच दुन्दुभिर्वाक्यं क्रोधात् संरक्तलोचनः ॥१८॥
18. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā girirājasya dhīmataḥ ,
uvāca dundubhirvākyaṃ krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ.
18. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā girirājasya dhīmataḥ
uvāca dundubhiḥ vākyam krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ
18. dhīmataḥ girirājasya tat vacanam śrutvā
dundubhiḥ krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ vākyam uvāca
18. Having heard those words from the wise king of mountains, Dundubhi, his eyes reddened with anger, spoke words.
यदि युद्धे ऽसमर्थस्त्वं मद्भयाद्वा निरुद्यमः ।
तमाचक्ष्व प्रदद्यान्मे यो ऽद्य युद्धं युयुत्सतः ॥१९॥
19. yadi yuddhe'samarthastvaṃ madbhayādvā nirudyamaḥ ,
tamācakṣva pradadyānme yo'dya yuddhaṃ yuyutsataḥ.
19. yadi yuddhe asamarthaḥ tvam madbhayāt vā nirudyamaḥ
tam ācakṣva pradadyāt me yaḥ adya yuddham yuyutsataḥ
19. yadi tvam yuddhe asamarthaḥ vā madbhayāt nirudyamaḥ,
adya yuddham yuyutsataḥ me yaḥ pradadyāt,
tam ācakṣva
19. If you are incapable in battle, or inactive due to fear of me, then point out to me someone who would offer a fight to me, who now wishes to engage in combat.
हिमवानब्रवीद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा वाक्यविशारदः ।
अनुक्तपूर्वं धर्मात्मा क्रोधात्तमसुरोत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. himavānabravīdvākyaṃ śrutvā vākyaviśāradaḥ ,
anuktapūrvaṃ dharmātmā krodhāttamasurottamam.
20. himavān abravīt vākyam śrutvā vākyaviśāradaḥ
anuktapūrvam dharmātmā krodhāt tam asurottamam
20. After hearing, Himavan, who was adept in speech and righteous in his intrinsic nature (dharma), spoke to that best of Asuras out of anger, uttering words he had never spoken before.
वाली नाम महाप्राज्ञः शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः ।
अध्यास्ते वानरः श्रीमान् किष्किन्धामतुलप्रभाम् ॥२१॥
21. vālī nāma mahāprājñaḥ śakratulyaparākramaḥ ,
adhyāste vānaraḥ śrīmān kiṣkindhāmatulaprabhām.
21. vālī nāma mahāprājñaḥ śakratulyaparākramaḥ
adhyāste vānaraḥ śrīmān kiṣkindhām atulaprabhām
21. A glorious monkey named Vali, who is exceedingly wise and whose valor is equal to Indra's, dwells in Kishkindha, a city of unequalled splendor.
स समर्थो महाप्राज्ञस्तव युद्धविशारदः ।
द्वन्द्वयुद्धं महद्दातुं नमुचेरिव वासवः ॥२२॥
22. sa samartho mahāprājñastava yuddhaviśāradaḥ ,
dvandvayuddhaṃ mahaddātuṃ namuceriva vāsavaḥ.
22. sa samarthaḥ mahāprājñaḥ tava yuddhaviśāradaḥ
dvandvayuddham mahat dātum namuceḥ iva vāsavaḥ
22. That highly capable and very wise individual, an expert in warfare, is able to offer you a great duel, just as Indra did with Namuchi.
तं शीघ्रमभिगच्छ त्वं यदि युद्धमिहेच्छसि ।
स हि दुर्धर्षणो नित्यं शूरः समरकर्मणि ॥२३॥
23. taṃ śīghramabhigaccha tvaṃ yadi yuddhamihecchasi ,
sa hi durdharṣaṇo nityaṃ śūraḥ samarakarmaṇi.
23. tam śīghram abhigaccha tvam yadi yuddham iha icchasi
sa hi durdharṣaṇaḥ nityam śūraḥ samarakarmaṇi
23. If you desire battle here, you should quickly go to him. For he is always unconquerable and a hero in the act of warfare (karma).
श्रुत्वा हिमवतो वाक्यं क्रोधाविष्टः स दुन्दुभिः ।
जगाम तां पुरीं तस्य किष्किन्धां वालिनस्तदा ॥२४॥
24. śrutvā himavato vākyaṃ krodhāviṣṭaḥ sa dundubhiḥ ,
jagāma tāṃ purīṃ tasya kiṣkindhāṃ vālinastadā.
24. śrutvā himavataḥ vākyaṃ krodhāviṣṭaḥ saḥ dundubhiḥ
jagāma tām purīm tasya kiṣkindhām vālinaḥ tadā
24. tadā saḥ dundubhiḥ himavataḥ vākyaṃ śrutvā
krodhāviṣṭaḥ tasya vālinaḥ tām kiṣkindhām purīm jagāma
24. Then, having heard Himavat's words, that demon Dundubhi, filled with rage, went to Vāli's city, Kiṣkindhā.
धारयन्माहिषं रूपं तीक्ष्णशृङ्गो भयावहः ।
प्रावृषीव महामेघस्तोयपूर्णो नभस्तले ॥२५॥
25. dhārayanmāhiṣaṃ rūpaṃ tīkṣṇaśṛṅgo bhayāvahaḥ ,
prāvṛṣīva mahāmeghastoyapūrṇo nabhastale.
25. dhārayan māhiṣam rūpam tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaḥ bhayāvahaḥ
prāvṛṣī iva mahāmeghaḥ toyapūrṇaḥ nabhastale
25. māhiṣam rūpam dhārayan tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaḥ bhayāvahaḥ (saḥ
dundubhiḥ) prāvṛṣī nabhastale toyapūrṇaḥ mahāmeghaḥ iva
25. Assuming the form of a buffalo, with sharp horns and a terrifying appearance, he was like a great cloud, full of water, in the sky during the rainy season.
ततस्तु द्वारमागम्य किष्किन्धाया महाबलः ।
ननर्द कम्पयन्भूमिं दुन्दुभिर्दुन्दुभिर्यथा ॥२६॥
26. tatastu dvāramāgamya kiṣkindhāyā mahābalaḥ ,
nanarda kampayanbhūmiṃ dundubhirdundubhiryathā.
26. tataḥ tu dvāram āgamya kiṣkindhāyāḥ mahābalaḥ
nanarda kampayan bhūmim dundubhiḥ dundubhiḥ yathā
26. tataḥ tu mahābalaḥ dundubhiḥ kiṣkindhāyāḥ dvāram
āgamya bhūmim kampayan dundubhiḥ yathā nanarda
26. Then, the immensely powerful (mahābala) Dundubhi, having arrived at the gate of Kiṣkindhā, roared, shaking the earth just like a great war drum (dundubhi).
समीपजान्द्रुमान्भञ्जन् वसुधां दारयन् खुरैः ।
विषाणेनोल्लेखन्दर्पात्तद्द्वारं द्विरदो यथा ॥२७॥
27. samīpajāndrumānbhañjan vasudhāṃ dārayan khuraiḥ ,
viṣāṇenollekhandarpāttaddvāraṃ dvirado yathā.
27. samīpajān drumān bhañjan vasudhām dārayan khuraiḥ
viṣāṇena ullekhan darpāt tat dvāram dviradaḥ yathā
27. (saḥ dundubhiḥ) samīpajān drumān bhañjan khuraiḥ vasudhām
dārayan darpāt viṣāṇena tat dvāram ullekhan dviradaḥ yathā
27. Proudly (darpāt), he broke the nearby trees, tore up the ground with his hooves, and scraped that gate with his horn, just like an elephant (dvirada).
अन्तःपुरगतो वाली श्रुत्वा शब्दममर्षणः ।
निष्पपात सह स्त्रीभिस्ताराभिरिव चन्द्रमाः ॥२८॥
28. antaḥpuragato vālī śrutvā śabdamamarṣaṇaḥ ,
niṣpapāta saha strībhistārābhiriva candramāḥ.
28. antaḥpuragataḥ vālī śrutvā śabdam amarṣaṇaḥ
niṣpapāta saha strībhiḥ tārābhiḥ iva candramāḥ
28. vālī antaḥpuragataḥ amarṣaṇaḥ śabdam śrutvā

28. Vali, who was in his inner apartments, heard the sound and, filled with indignation, rushed out accompanied by his wives, just as the moon emerges with the stars.
मितं व्यक्ताक्षरपदं तमुवाच स दुन्दुभिम् ।
हरीणामीश्वरो वाली सर्वेषां वनचारिणाम् ॥२९॥
29. mitaṃ vyaktākṣarapadaṃ tamuvāca sa dundubhim ,
harīṇāmīśvaro vālī sarveṣāṃ vanacāriṇām.
29. mitam vyaktākṣarapadam tam uvāca saḥ dundubhim
harīṇām īśvaraḥ vālī sarveṣām vanacāriṇām
29. vālī harīṇām sarveṣām vanacāriṇām īśvaraḥ saḥ
mitam vyaktākṣarapadam tam dundubhim uvāca
29. Vali, the lord of all forest-dwelling monkeys, addressed Dundubhi with concise words that had clear syllables.
किमर्थं नगरद्वारमिदं रुद्ध्वा विनर्दसि ।
दुन्दुभे विदितो मे ऽसि रक्ष प्राणान्महाबल ॥३०॥
30. kimarthaṃ nagaradvāramidaṃ ruddhvā vinardasi ,
dundubhe vidito me'si rakṣa prāṇānmahābala.
30. kimartham nagaradvāram idam ruddhvā vinardasi
dundubhe viditaḥ me asi rakṣa prāṇān mahābala
30. dundubhe mahābala kimartham idam nagaradvāram
ruddhvā vinardasi me viditaḥ asi prāṇān rakṣa
30. O Dundubhi, why are you roaring after blocking this city gate? I know who you are. O mighty one, save your life!
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वानरेन्द्रस्य धीमतः ।
उवाच दुन्दुभिर्वाक्यं क्रोधात् संरक्तलोचनः ॥३१॥
31. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā vānarendrasya dhīmataḥ ,
uvāca dundubhirvākyaṃ krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ.
31. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā vānarendrasya dhīmataḥ
uvāca dundubhiḥ vākyam krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ
31. dundubhiḥ krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ tasya vānarendrasya
dhīmataḥ tat vacanam śrutvā vākyam uvāca
31. Upon hearing those words from the wise lord of monkeys, Dundubhi, with his eyes reddened by anger, replied.
न त्वं स्त्रीसंनिधौ वीर वचनं वक्तुमर्हसि ।
मम युद्धं प्रयच्छ त्वं ततो ज्ञास्यामि ते बलम् ॥३२॥
32. na tvaṃ strīsaṃnidhau vīra vacanaṃ vaktumarhasi ,
mama yuddhaṃ prayaccha tvaṃ tato jñāsyāmi te balam.
32. na tvam strīsaṃnidhau vīra vacanam vaktum arhasi
mama yuddham prayaccha tvam tataḥ jñāsyāmi te balam

32. O hero, you should not utter such words in the presence of women. Give me battle, and then I will ascertain your strength.
अथ वा धारयिष्यामि क्रोधमद्य निशामिमाम् ।
गृह्यतामुदयः स्वैरं कामभोगेषु वानर ॥३३॥
33. atha vā dhārayiṣyāmi krodhamadya niśāmimām ,
gṛhyatāmudayaḥ svairaṃ kāmabhogeṣu vānara.
33. atha vā dhārayiṣyāmi krodham adya niśām imām
gṛhyatām udayaḥ svairam kāmabhogeṣu vānara

33. Alternatively, I will suppress this anger of mine for this night. O monkey, you are free to indulge in your desired pleasures.
यो हि मत्तं प्रमत्तं वा सुप्तं वा रहितं भृशम् ।
हन्यात् स भ्रूणहा लोके त्वद्विधं मदमोहितम् ॥३४॥
34. yo hi mattaṃ pramattaṃ vā suptaṃ vā rahitaṃ bhṛśam ,
hanyāt sa bhrūṇahā loke tvadvidhaṃ madamohitam.
34. yaḥ hi mattam pramattam vā suptam vā rahitam bhṛśam
hanyāt sa bhrūṇahā loke tvadvidham madamohitam
34. yaḥ hi mattam vā pramattam vā suptam vā bhṛśam rahitam

34. Indeed, whoever kills someone who is intoxicated, heedless, asleep, or utterly defenseless, that person is considered a child-killer (bhrūṇahā) in this world, especially one like you, who is deluded by intoxication.
स प्रहस्याब्रवीन्मन्दं क्रोधात्तमसुरोत्तमम् ।
विसृज्य ताः स्त्रियः सर्वास्ताराप्रभृतिकास्तदा ॥३५॥
35. sa prahasyābravīnmandaṃ krodhāttamasurottamam ,
visṛjya tāḥ striyaḥ sarvāstārāprabhṛtikāstadā.
35. saḥ prahasya abravīt mandam krodhāt tam asurottamam
visṛjya tāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ tārāprabhṛtikāḥ tadā
35. tadā saḥ prahasya krodhāt tam asurottamam mandam
abravīt sarvāḥ tāḥ tārāprabhṛtikāḥ striyaḥ visṛjya
35. Then, laughing scornfully, he angrily spoke gently to that chief of asuras, after all those women, with Tārā among them, had been dismissed.
मत्तो ऽयमिति मा मंस्था यद्यभीतो ऽसि संयुगे ।
मदो ऽयं संप्रहारे ऽस्मिन् वीरपानं समर्थ्यताम् ॥३६॥
36. matto'yamiti mā maṃsthā yadyabhīto'si saṃyuge ,
mado'yaṃ saṃprahāre'smin vīrapānaṃ samarthyatām.
36. mattaḥ ayam iti mā maṃsthāḥ yadi abhītaḥ asi saṃyuge
| madaḥ ayam saṃprahāre asmin vīrapānam samarthyatām
36. yadi saṃyuge abhītaḥ asi,
ayam mattaḥ iti mā maṃsthāḥ asmin saṃprahāre ayam madaḥ vīrapānam; samarthyatām
36. If you are fearless in battle, do not assume that this [ferocity] is merely my intoxication. This [fury] is the very essence of a warrior's drink (vīrapāna) for this fierce combat; let its power be fully asserted!
तमेवमुक्त्वा संक्रुद्धो मालामुत्क्षिप्य काञ्चनीम् ।
पित्रा दत्तां महेन्द्रेण युद्धाय व्यवतिष्ठत ॥३७॥
37. tamevamuktvā saṃkruddho mālāmutkṣipya kāñcanīm ,
pitrā dattāṃ mahendreṇa yuddhāya vyavatiṣṭhata.

37. Having spoken thus to him, greatly enraged, [Vali] threw up the golden garland which had been given to him by his father, Mahendra (Indra), and stood ready for battle.
विषाणयोर्गृहीत्वा तं दुन्दुभिं गिरिसंनिभम् ।
वाली व्यापातयां चक्रे ननर्द च महास्वनम् ॥३८॥
38. viṣāṇayorgṛhītvā taṃ dundubhiṃ girisaṃnibham ,
vālī vyāpātayāṃ cakre nanarda ca mahāsvanam.

38. Vali, having seized that mountain-like Dundubhi by his horns, threw him down and roared with a great sound.
युद्धे प्राणहरे तस्मिन्निष्पिष्टो दुन्दुभिस्तदा ।
श्रोत्राभ्यामथ रक्तं तु तस्य सुस्राव पात्यतः ।
पपात च महाकायः क्षितौ पञ्चत्वमागतः ॥३९॥
39. yuddhe prāṇahare tasminniṣpiṣṭo dundubhistadā ,
śrotrābhyāmatha raktaṃ tu tasya susrāva pātyataḥ ,
papāta ca mahākāyaḥ kṣitau pañcatvamāgataḥ.

39. Then, in that deadly battle, Dundubhi, having been crushed, at that moment, as he was being thrown, blood flowed from his ears. And that huge-bodied [demon], having reached the state of the five elements (i.e., having died), fell upon the ground.
तं तोलयित्वा बाहुभ्यां गतसत्त्वमचेतनम् ।
चिक्षेप वेगवान् वाली वेगेनैकेन योजनम् ॥४०॥
40. taṃ tolayitvā bāhubhyāṃ gatasattvamacetanam ,
cikṣepa vegavān vālī vegenaikena yojanam.

cikṣepa vegavān vālī vegena ekena yojanam

40. Having lifted that lifeless, unconscious one with his two arms, the mighty Vālī hurled him a yojana (unit of distance) with a single powerful throw.
तस्य वेगप्रविद्धस्य वक्त्रात् क्षतजबिन्दवः ।
प्रपेतुर्मारुतोत्क्षिप्ता मतङ्गस्याश्रमं प्रति ॥४१॥
41. tasya vegapraviddhasya vaktrāt kṣatajabindavaḥ ,
prapeturmārutotkṣiptā mataṅgasyāśramaṃ prati.

41. From the mouth of that (demon) who had been violently thrown, drops of blood, lifted by the wind, fell towards the hermitage (āśrama) of Mataṅga.
तान्दृष्ट्वा पतितांस्तत्र मुनिः शोणितविप्रुषः ।
उत्ससर्ज महाशापं क्षेप्तारं वालिनं प्रति ।
इह तेनाप्रवेष्टव्यं प्रविष्टस्य बधो भवेत् ॥४२॥
42. tāndṛṣṭvā patitāṃstatra muniḥ śoṇitavipruṣaḥ ,
utsasarja mahāśāpaṃ kṣeptāraṃ vālinaṃ prati ,
iha tenāpraveṣṭavyaṃ praviṣṭasya badho bhavet.
42. tān dṛṣṭvā patitān tatra muniḥ
śoṇitavipruṣaḥ utsasarja mahāśāpam
kṣeptāram vālinaṃ prati iha tena
apraveṣṭavyam praviṣṭasya badhaḥ bhavet

praviṣṭasya badhaḥ bhavet
42. Seeing those fallen drops of blood there, the sage (muni) pronounced a great curse against Vālī, the one who threw it. 'Here, he must not enter; if he enters, death will befall him.'
स महर्षिं समासाद्य
याचते स्म कृताञ्जलिः ॥४३॥
43. sa maharṣiṃ samāsādya
yācate sma kṛtāñjaliḥ.

43. Having approached the great sage (maharṣi), he (Vālī) begged with clasped hands (kṛtāñjali).
ततः शापभयाद्भीत ऋश्यमूकं महागिरिम् ।
प्रवेष्टुं नेच्छति हरिर्द्रष्टुं वापि नरेश्वर ॥४४॥
44. tataḥ śāpabhayādbhīta ṛśyamūkaṃ mahāgirim ,
praveṣṭuṃ necchati harirdraṣṭuṃ vāpi nareśvara.
44. tataḥ śāpabhayāt bhītaḥ ṛśyamūkaṃ mahāgirim
praveṣṭuṃ na icchati hariḥ draṣṭuṃ vā api nareśvara
44. nareśvara tataḥ śāpabhayāt bhītaḥ hariḥ mahāgirim
ṛśyamūkaṃ praveṣṭuṃ vā draṣṭuṃ api na icchati
44. Therefore, O king of men, the monkey (Vali), fearful of a curse, does not wish to enter or even look upon the great Rṣyamūka mountain.
तस्याप्रवेशं ज्ञात्वाहमिदं राम महावनम् ।
विचरामि सहामात्यो विषादेन विवर्जितः ॥४५॥
45. tasyāpraveśaṃ jñātvāhamidaṃ rāma mahāvanam ,
vicarāmi sahāmātyo viṣādena vivarjitaḥ.
45. tasya apraveśaṃ jñātvā ahaṃ idaṃ rāma mahāvanam
vicarāmi sahāmātyaḥ viṣādena vivarjitaḥ
45. rāma tasya apraveśaṃ jñātvā ahaṃ idaṃ mahāvanam
sahāmātyaḥ viṣādena vivarjitaḥ vicarāmi
45. O Rāma, knowing that he (Vali) cannot enter this great forest, I roam here with my ministers, free from sorrow.
एषो ऽस्थिनिचयस्तस्य दुन्दुभेः संप्रकाशते ।
वीर्योत्सेकान्निरस्तस्य गिरिकूटनिभो महान् ॥४६॥
46. eṣo'sthinicayastasya dundubheḥ saṃprakāśate ,
vīryotsekānnirastasya girikūṭanibho mahān.
46. eṣaḥ asthiniyacaḥ tasya dundubheḥ samprakāśate
vīryotsekāt nirastasya girikūṭanibhaḥ mahān
46. tasya vīryotsekāt nirastasya dundubheḥ eṣaḥ

46. This great pile of bones belonging to that Dundubhi, who was vanquished due to his excessive might, is clearly visible, resembling a mountain peak.
इमे च विपुलाः सालाः सप्त शाखावलम्बिनः ।
यत्रैकं घटते वाली निष्पत्रयितुमोजसा ॥४७॥
47. ime ca vipulāḥ sālāḥ sapta śākhāvalambinaḥ ,
yatraikaṃ ghaṭate vālī niṣpatrayitumojasā.
47. ime ca vipulāḥ sālāḥ sapta śākhāvalambinaḥ
yatra ekaṃ ghaṭate vālī niṣpatrayituṃ ojasā
47. ca ime sapta vipulāḥ śākhāvalambinaḥ sālāḥ
yatra vālī ojasā ekaṃ niṣpatrayituṃ ghaṭate
47. And these are the seven vast Sāla trees, whose branches hang low, from which Vali is able to strip a single one of its leaves by his mighty strength.
एतदस्यासमं वीर्यं मया राम प्रकाशितम् ।
कथं तं वालिनं हन्तुं समरे शक्ष्यसे नृप ॥४८॥
48. etadasyāsamaṃ vīryaṃ mayā rāma prakāśitam ,
kathaṃ taṃ vālinaṃ hantuṃ samare śakṣyase nṛpa.
48. etat asya asamam vīryam mayā rāma prakāśitam
katham tam vālinam hantum samare śakṣyase nṛpa
48. rāma nṛpa,
mayā asya etat asamam vīryam prakāśitam.
katham tam vālinam samare hantum śakṣyase?
48. O Rama, O King, this unparalleled strength of his has been revealed by me. How will you be able to kill that Vali in battle?
यदि भिन्द्याद्भवान् सालानिमांस्त्वेकेषुणा ततः ।
जानीयां त्वां महाबाहो समर्थं वालिनो वधे ॥४९॥
49. yadi bhindyādbhavān sālānimāṃstvekeṣuṇā tataḥ ,
jānīyāṃ tvāṃ mahābāho samarthaṃ vālino vadhe.
49. yadi bhindyāt bhavān sālān imān tu ekeṣuṇā tataḥ
jānīyām tvām mahābāho samartham vālinaḥ vadhe
49. mahābāho,
yadi bhavān imān sālān tu ekeṣuṇā bhindyāt,
tataḥ tvām vālinaḥ vadhe samartham jānīyām.
49. O mighty-armed one, if you would pierce these Sala trees with a single arrow, then I would know you to be capable of killing Vali.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ।
राघवो दुन्दुभेः कायं पादाङ्गुष्ठेन लीलया ।
तोलयित्वा महाबाहुश्चिक्षेप दशयोजनम् ॥५०॥
50. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ ,
rāghavo dundubheḥ kāyaṃ pādāṅguṣṭhena līlayā ,
tolayitvā mahābāhuścikṣepa daśayojanam.
50. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā sugrīvasya
mahātmanaḥ rāghavaḥ dundubheḥ
kāyam pādāṅguṣṭhena līlayā tolayitvā
mahābāhuḥ cikṣepa daśayojanam
50. mahātmanaḥ sugrīvasya tat vacanam śrutvā,
mahābāhuḥ rāghavaḥ dundubheḥ kāyam pādāṅguṣṭhena līlayā tolayitvā daśayojanam cikṣepa.
50. Having heard those words of the great-souled Sugriva, the mighty-armed Rama playfully lifted Dundubhi's body with his big toe and threw it ten yojanas.
क्षिप्तं दृष्ट्वा ततः कायं सुग्रीवः पुनरब्रवीत् ।
लक्ष्मणस्याग्रतो राममिदं वचनमर्थवत् ॥५१॥
51. kṣiptaṃ dṛṣṭvā tataḥ kāyaṃ sugrīvaḥ punarabravīt ,
lakṣmaṇasyāgrato rāmamidaṃ vacanamarthavat.
51. kṣiptam dṛṣṭvā tataḥ kāyam sugrīvaḥ punaḥ abravīt
lakṣmaṇasya agrataḥ rāmam idam vacanam arthavat
51. tataḥ,
kāyam kṣiptam dṛṣṭvā,
sugrīvaḥ lakṣmaṇasya agrataḥ rāmam idam arthavat vacanam punaḥ abravīt.
51. Having seen the body thus thrown, Sugriva then spoke these significant words to Rama in front of Lakshmana.
आर्द्रः समांसप्रत्यग्रः क्षिप्तः कायः पुरा सखे ।
लघुः संप्रति निर्मांसस्तृणभूतश्च राघव ।
नात्र शक्यं बलं ज्ञातुं तव वा तस्य वाधिकम् ॥५२॥
52. ārdraḥ samāṃsapratyagraḥ kṣiptaḥ kāyaḥ purā sakhe ,
laghuḥ saṃprati nirmāṃsastṛṇabhūtaśca rāghava ,
nātra śakyaṃ balaṃ jñātuṃ tava vā tasya vādhikam.
52. ārdraḥ samāṃsapratyagraḥ kṣiptaḥ kāyaḥ
purā sakhe laghuḥ saṃprati nirmāṃsaḥ
tṛṇabhūtaḥ ca rāghava na atra śakyam
balam jñātum tava vā tasya vā adhikam
52. sakhe purā samāṃsapratyagraḥ ārdraḥ
kāyaḥ kṣiptaḥ rāghava saṃprati laghuḥ
nirmāṃsaḥ ca tṛṇabhūtaḥ atra tava vā
tasya vā adhikam balam jñātum na śakyam
52. O friend, formerly, his body, freshly endowed with flesh, was cast down. Now, O Rāghava, it is light, devoid of flesh, and has become like grass. Therefore, it is not possible to ascertain whose strength, yours or his, is superior here.
