श्रुत्वा तु पितरं वृत्तं भ्रातरु च विवासितौ ।
भरतो दुःखसंतप्त इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. śrutvā tu pitaraṃ vṛttaṃ bhrātaru ca vivāsitau ,
bharato duḥkhasaṃtapta idaṃ vacanamabravīt.

1. Bharata, upon hearing of his father's passing and the exile of his two brothers, was deeply distressed by sorrow and spoke these words.
किं नुण्कार्यं हतस्येह मम राज्येन शोचतः ।
विहीनस्याथ पित्रा च भ्रात्रा पितृसमेन च ॥२॥
2. kiṃ nuṇkāryaṃ hatasyeha mama rājyena śocataḥ ,
vihīnasyātha pitrā ca bhrātrā pitṛsamena ca.
2. kim nu kāryam hatasya iha mama rājyena śocataḥ
vihīnasya atha pitrā ca bhrātrā pitṛsamena ca
2. iha hatasya śocataḥ pitrā pitṛsamena bhrātrā
ca vihīnasya mama rājyena kim nu kāryam atha
2. What purpose is there for me, devastated and grieving here, in a kingdom, when I am deprived of my father and a brother who was like a father?
दुःखे मे दुःखमकरोर्व्रणे क्षारमिवादधाः ।
राजानं प्रेतभावस्थं कृत्वा रामं च तापसं ॥३॥
3. duḥkhe me duḥkhamakarorvraṇe kṣāramivādadhāḥ ,
rājānaṃ pretabhāvasthaṃ kṛtvā rāmaṃ ca tāpasaṃ.
3. duḥkhe me duḥkham akaroḥ vraṇe kṣāram iva adadhāḥ
rājānam pretabhāvastham kṛtvā rāmam ca tāpasam
3. me duḥkhe duḥkham akaroḥ vraṇe kṣāram iva adadhāḥ
rājānam pretabhāvastham kṛtvā rāmam ca tāpasam
3. You added sorrow to my sorrow, like applying caustic to a wound, by making the king as if dead and Rama an ascetic.
कुलस्य त्वमभावाय कालरात्रिरिवागता ।
अङ्गारमुपगूह्य स्म पिता मे नावबुद्धवान् ॥४॥
4. kulasya tvamabhāvāya kālarātririvāgatā ,
aṅgāramupagūhya sma pitā me nāvabuddhavān.
4. kulasya tvam abhāvāya kālarātriḥ iva āgatā
aṅgāram upagūhya sma pitā me na avabuddhavān
4. tvam kulasya abhāvāya kālarātriḥ iva āgatā
me pitā aṅgāram upagūhya sma na avabuddhavān
4. You have arrived like the Night of Destruction (Kālarātri) for the ruin of our family. My father, by embracing an ember, indeed, did not realize (its destructive nature).
कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च पुत्रशोकाभिपीडिते ।
दुष्करं यदि जीवेतां प्राप्य त्वां जननीं मम ॥५॥
5. kausalyā ca sumitrā ca putraśokābhipīḍite ,
duṣkaraṃ yadi jīvetāṃ prāpya tvāṃ jananīṃ mama.
5. kausalyā ca sumitrā ca putraśokābhipīḍite
duṣkaram yadi jīvetām prāpya tvām jananīm mama
5. putraśokābhipīḍite kausalyā ca sumitrā ca mama
jananīm tvām prāpya yadi jīvetām duṣkaram
5. It will be difficult for Kausalya and Sumitra, afflicted by grief for their sons, to live if they get you as my mother.
ननु त्वार्यो ऽपि धर्मात्मा त्वयि वृत्तिमनुत्तमाम् ।
वर्तते गुरुवृत्तिज्ञो यथा मातरि वर्तते ॥६॥
6. nanu tvāryo'pi dharmātmā tvayi vṛttimanuttamām ,
vartate guruvṛttijño yathā mātari vartate.
6. nanu tu āryaḥ api dharmātmā tvayi vṛttim anuttamām
vartate guruvṛttijñaḥ yathā mātari vartate
6. nanu tu āryaḥ api dharmātmā guruvṛttijñaḥ tvayi
anuttamām vṛttim vartate yathā mātari vartate
6. Indeed, the noble and righteous-souled (dharma) one conducts himself towards you with the utmost respect, knowing the proper behavior towards elders, just as he would behave towards his own mother.
तथा ज्येष्ठा हि मे माता कौसल्या दीर्घदर्शिनी ।
त्वयि धर्मं समास्थाय भगिन्यामिव वर्तते ॥७॥
7. tathā jyeṣṭhā hi me mātā kausalyā dīrghadarśinī ,
tvayi dharmaṃ samāsthāya bhaginyāmiva vartate.
7. tathā jyeṣṭhā hi me mātā kausalyā dīrghadarśinī
tvayi dharmam samāsthāya bhaginyām iva vartate
7. tathā hi me jyeṣṭhā mātā dīrghadarśinī kausalyā
tvayi dharmam samāsthāya bhaginyām iva vartate
7. Similarly, my eldest mother, the far-sighted Kausalya, maintains proper conduct (dharma) towards you and behaves as if you were her own sister.
तस्याः पुत्रं कृतात्मानं चीरवल्कलवाससं ।
प्रस्थाप्य वनवासाय कथं पापे न शोचसि ॥८॥
8. tasyāḥ putraṃ kṛtātmānaṃ cīravalkalavāsasaṃ ,
prasthāpya vanavāsāya kathaṃ pāpe na śocasi.
8. tasyāḥ putram kṛtātmānam cīravalkalavāsasam
prasthāpya vanavāsāya katham pāpe na śocasi
8. pāpe katham na śocasi tasyāḥ kṛtātmānam
cīravalkalavāsasam putram vanavāsāya prasthāpya
8. Having sent her son, a self-controlled (ātman) man wearing bark and rags, into forest exile, how, O sinful woman, do you not grieve?
अपापदर्शिनं शूरं कृतात्मानं यशस्विनम् ।
प्रव्राज्य चीरवसनं किं नु पश्यसि कारणम् ॥९॥
9. apāpadarśinaṃ śūraṃ kṛtātmānaṃ yaśasvinam ,
pravrājya cīravasanaṃ kiṃ nu paśyasi kāraṇam.
9. apāpadarśinam śūram kṛtātmānam yaśasvinam
pravrājya cīravasanam kim nu paśyasi kāraṇam
9. kim nu kāraṇam paśyasi apāpadarśinam śūram
kṛtātmānam yaśasvinam cīravasanam pravrājya
9. What reason do you indeed see for exiling this innocent, heroic, self-controlled (ātman), and glorious person, clad in bark garments?
लुब्धाया विदितो मन्ये न ते ऽहं राघवं प्रति ।
तथा ह्यनर्थो राज्यार्थं त्वया नीतो महानयम् ॥१०॥
10. lubdhāyā vidito manye na te'haṃ rāghavaṃ prati ,
tathā hyanartho rājyārthaṃ tvayā nīto mahānayam.
10. lubdhāyāḥ viditaḥ manye na te aham rāghavam prati
tathā hi anarthaḥ rājyārtham tvayā nītaḥ mahān ayam
10. manye aham te lubdhāyāḥ rāghavam prati na viditaḥ
tathā hi ayam mahān anarthaḥ rājyārtham tvayā nītaḥ
10. I believe I am not truly known to you (Kaikeyī) regarding Rāghava (Rama), considering that such a great calamity has indeed been brought about by you for the sake of the kingdom.
अहं हि पुरुषव्याघ्रावपश्यन् रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
केन शक्तिप्रभावेन राज्यं रक्षितुमुत्सहे ॥११॥
11. ahaṃ hi puruṣavyāghrāvapaśyan rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
kena śaktiprabhāvena rājyaṃ rakṣitumutsahe.
11. aham hi puruṣavyāghrau apaśyan rāmalakṣmaṇau
kena śaktiprabhāveṇa rājyam rakṣitum utsahe
11. aham hi puruṣavyāghrau rāmalakṣmaṇau apaśyan,
kena śaktiprabhāveṇa rājyam rakṣitum utsahe?
11. Indeed, with me not seeing the two foremost men (puruṣavyāghra), Rama and Lakshmana, by what power or influence (śakti) can I possibly undertake to protect the kingdom?
तं हि नित्यं महाराजो बलवन्तं महाबलः ।
अपाश्रितो ऽभूद्धर्मात्मा मेरुर्मेरुवनं यथा ॥१२॥
12. taṃ hi nityaṃ mahārājo balavantaṃ mahābalaḥ ,
apāśrito'bhūddharmātmā merurmeruvanaṃ yathā.
12. tam hi nityam mahārājaḥ balavantam mahābalaḥ
apāśritaḥ abhūt dharmātmā meruḥ meruvanam yathā
12. hi mahābalaḥ mahārājaḥ dharmātmā nityam tam balavantam apāśritaḥ abhūt,
yathā meruḥ meruvanam (apāśritaḥ abhūt).
12. Indeed, the great king, a man of great strength and righteous (dharmātman) disposition, always depended on him, the powerful one, just as Mount Meru depends on the forest of Meru.
सो ऽहं कथमिमं भारं महाधुर्यसमुद्यतम् ।
दम्यो धुरमिवासाद्य सहेयं केन चौजसा ॥१३॥
13. so'haṃ kathamimaṃ bhāraṃ mahādhuryasamudyatam ,
damyo dhuramivāsādya saheyaṃ kena caujasā.
13. saḥ aham katham imam bhāram mahādhuryasamudyatam
damyaḥ dhuram iva āsādya saheyam kena ca ojasā
13. saḥ aham damyaḥ iva dhuram āsādya katham imam
mahādhuryasamudyatam bhāram kena ca ojasā saheyam?
13. How can I, that (person), a mere untrained animal (damya) approaching the yoke (dhuraṃ), bear this enormous burden (bhāra), which is typically managed by great leaders, and with what strength (ojas) can I endure it?
अथ वा मे भवेच्छक्तिर्योगैर्बुद्धिबलेन वा ।
सकामां न करिष्यामि त्वामहं पुत्रगर्धिनीम् ।
निवर्तयिष्यामि वनाद्भ्रातरं स्वजनप्रियम् ॥१४॥
14. atha vā me bhavecchaktiryogairbuddhibalena vā ,
sakāmāṃ na kariṣyāmi tvāmahaṃ putragardhinīm ,
nivartayiṣyāmi vanādbhrātaraṃ svajanapriyam.
14. atha vā me bhavet śaktiḥ yogaiḥ
buddhibalena vā sakāmām na kariṣyāmi
tvām aham putragardhinīm nivartayiṣyāmi
vanāt bhrātaram svajanapriyam
14. atha vā me yogaiḥ buddhibalena vā
śaktiḥ bhavet aham putragardhinīm
tvām sakāmām na kariṣyāmi svajanapriyam
bhrātaram vanāt nivartayiṣyāmi
14. Or, if I possess the power, whether through spiritual discipline (yoga) or by mental strength, I will not satisfy your desire, you who are greedy for a son. I will bring my brother, who is dear to his people, back from the forest.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा भरतो महात्मा प्रियेतरैर्वाक्यगणैस्तुदंस्ताम् ।
शोकातुरश्चापि ननाद भूयः सिंहो यथा पर्वतगह्वरस्थः ॥१५॥
15. ityevamuktvā bharato mahātmā priyetarairvākyagaṇaistudaṃstām ,
śokāturaścāpi nanāda bhūyaḥ siṃho yathā parvatagahvarasthaḥ.
15. iti evam uktvā bharataḥ mahātmā
priyetaraiḥ vākyagaṇaiḥ tudan tām
śokāturaḥ ca api nanāda bhūyaḥ
siṃhaḥ yathā parvatagahvarasthaḥ
15. iti evam uktvā,
priyetaraiḥ vākyagaṇaiḥ tām tudan,
śokāturaḥ ca api,
mahātmā bharataḥ,
parvatagahvarasthaḥ siṃhaḥ yathā,
bhūyaḥ nanāda.
15. Having spoken thus, the great-souled (mahatma) Bharata, tormenting her with unpleasant words, and afflicted by grief, roared again, just like a lion within a mountain cave.
