जनकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
धनुर्दर्शय रामाय इति होवाच पार्थिवम् ॥१॥

1. Hearing Janaka's words, the great sage (mahāmuni) Vishvamitra said to the king (pārthiva), "Show the bow to Rama."
ततः स राजा जनकः सचिवान् व्यादिदेश ह ।
धनुरानीयतां दिव्यं गन्धमाल्यविभूषितम् ॥२॥
2. tataḥ sa rājā janakaḥ sacivān vyādideśa ha ,
dhanurānīyatāṃ divyaṃ gandhamālyavibhūṣitam.

2. Then King Janaka commanded his ministers, "Bring the divine bow, adorned with fragrances and garlands."
जनकेन समादिष्ठाः सचिवाः प्राविशन्पुरीम् ।
तद्धनुः पुरतः कृत्वा निर्जग्मुः पार्थिवाज्ञया ॥३॥
3. janakena samādiṣṭhāḥ sacivāḥ prāviśanpurīm ,
taddhanuḥ purataḥ kṛtvā nirjagmuḥ pārthivājñayā.

3. Commanded by Janaka, the ministers entered the city. Placing that bow before them, they came out according to the king's order.
नृपां शतानि पञ्चाशद्व्यायतानां महात्मनाम् ।
मञ्जूषामष्टचक्रां तां समूहुस्ते कथं चन ॥४॥
4. nṛpāṃ śatāni pañcāśadvyāyatānāṃ mahātmanām ,
mañjūṣāmaṣṭacakrāṃ tāṃ samūhuste kathaṃ cana.
4. nṛpāṇām śatāni pañcāśat vyāyatānām mahātmanām
mañjūṣām aṣṭacakrām tām samūhuḥ te katham cana
4. pañcāśat śatāni vyāyatānām mahātmanām nṛpāṇām

4. Five thousand mighty and great-souled kings, they somehow carried that eight-wheeled chest.
तामादाय तु मञ्जूषामायतीं यत्र तद्धनुः ।
सुरोपमं ते जनकमूचुर्नृपतिमन्त्रिणः ॥५॥
5. tāmādāya tu mañjūṣāmāyatīṃ yatra taddhanuḥ ,
suropamaṃ te janakamūcurnṛpatimantriṇaḥ.
5. tām ādāya tu mañjūṣām āyatīm yatra tat dhanuḥ
surupamam te janakam ūcuḥ nṛpatimantriṇaḥ
5. nṛpatimantriṇaḥ te tām āyatīm mañjūṣām ādāya

5. Having brought that long chest, where that bow lay, the king's ministers spoke to Janaka, who was like a god.
इदं धनुर्वरं राजन्पूजितं सर्वराजभिः ।
मिथिलाधिप राजेन्द्र दर्शनीयं यदीच्छसि ॥६॥
6. idaṃ dhanurvaraṃ rājanpūjitaṃ sarvarājabhiḥ ,
mithilādhipa rājendra darśanīyaṃ yadīcchasi.
6. idam dhanurvaram rājan pūjitam sarvarājabhiḥ
mithilādhipa rājendra darśanīyam yat icchasi
6. rājan mithilādhipa rājendra idam dhanurvaram
sarvarājabhiḥ pūjitam yat icchasi (tat) darśanīyam
6. O King, O Lord of Mithila, O King of kings, this excellent bow has been revered by all monarchs. It is indeed worth seeing, if you so desire.
तेषां नृपो वचः श्रुत्वा कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ।
विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं तौ चोभौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥७॥
7. teṣāṃ nṛpo vacaḥ śrutvā kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ,
viśvāmitraṃ mahātmānaṃ tau cobhau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
7. teṣām nṛpaḥ vacaḥ śrutvā kṛtāñjaliḥ abhāṣata
viśvāmitram mahātmānam tau ca ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau
7. teṣām vacaḥ śrutvā kṛtāñjaliḥ nṛpaḥ mahātmānam
viśvāmitram tau ca ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau (ca) abhāṣata
7. Having heard their words, the king, with folded hands, addressed the great-souled (mahātmā) Viśvāmitra, as well as both Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
इदं धनुर्वरं ब्रह्मञ्जनकैरभिपूजितम् ।
राजभिश्च महावीर्यैरशक्यं पूरितुं तदा ॥८॥
8. idaṃ dhanurvaraṃ brahmañjanakairabhipūjitam ,
rājabhiśca mahāvīryairaśakyaṃ pūrituṃ tadā.
8. idam dhanurvaram brahman janakaiḥ abhipūjitam
rājabhiḥ ca mahāvīryaiḥ aśakyam pūrayitum tadā
8. brahman idam dhanurvaram janakaiḥ ca mahāvīryaiḥ
rājabhiḥ abhipūjitam tadā pūrayitum aśakyam
8. O Brahmin, this excellent bow was revered by the Janakas (ancestors of Janaka) and by mighty kings, yet even they were unable to string it at that time.
नैतत् सुरगणाः सर्वे नासुरा न च राक्षसाः ।
गन्धर्वयक्षप्रवराः सकिंनरमहोरगाः ॥९॥
9. naitat suragaṇāḥ sarve nāsurā na ca rākṣasāḥ ,
gandharvayakṣapravarāḥ sakiṃnaramahoragāḥ.
9. na etat suragaṇāḥ sarve na asurāḥ na ca rākṣasāḥ
gandharvayakṣapravarāḥ sakinnaramahoragāḥ
9. etat sarve suragaṇāḥ na (śakyāḥ),
na asurāḥ,
na ca rākṣasāḥ,
(na ca) gandharvayakṣapravarāḥ sakinvaramahoragāḥ
9. Neither all the hosts of gods, nor the Asuras, nor the Rākṣasas, nor even the foremost of Gandharvas and Yakṣas, including the Kinnaras and great celestial serpents (Uragas), were able to manage this (bow).
क्व गतिर्मानुषाणां च धनुषो ऽस्य प्रपूरणे ।
आरोपणे समायोगे वेपने तोलने ऽपि वा ॥१०॥
10. kva gatirmānuṣāṇāṃ ca dhanuṣo'sya prapūraṇe ,
āropaṇe samāyoge vepane tolane'pi vā.
10. kva gatiḥ mānuṣāṇām ca dhanuṣaḥ asya prapūraṇe
āropaṇe samāyoge vepane tolane api vā
10. ca mānuṣāṇām asya dhanuṣaḥ prapūraṇe āropaṇe
samāyoge vepane tolane api vā kva gatiḥ
10. What capacity do humans possess for fully drawing this bow, or for stringing it, or for fitting its parts, or for wielding it, or even just for lifting it?
तदेतद्धनुषां श्रेष्ठमानीतं मुनिपुंगव ।
दर्शयैतन्महाभाग अनयो राजपुत्रयोः ॥११॥
11. tadetaddhanuṣāṃ śreṣṭhamānītaṃ munipuṃgava ,
darśayaitanmahābhāga anayo rājaputrayoḥ.
11. tat etat dhanuṣām śreṣṭham ānītam munipuṅgava
darśaya etam mahābhāga anayoḥ rājaputrayoḥ
11. munipuṅgava mahābhāga tat etat dhanuṣām śreṣṭham
ānītam anayoḥ rājaputrayoḥ etam darśaya
11. O chief among sages (munipuṅgava), this most excellent of bows has been brought. O highly fortunate one, please show this to these two princes.
विश्वामित्रस्तु धर्मात्मा श्रुत्वा जनकभाषितम् ।
वत्स राम धनुः पश्य इति राघवमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. viśvāmitrastu dharmātmā śrutvā janakabhāṣitam ,
vatsa rāma dhanuḥ paśya iti rāghavamabravīt.
12. viśvāmitraḥ tu dharmātmā śrutvā janakabhāṣitam
vatsa rāma dhanuḥ paśya iti rāghavam abravīt
12. tu dharmātmā viśvāmitraḥ janakabhāṣitam śrutvā
rāghavam abravīt iti vatsa rāma dhanuḥ paśya
12. Viśvāmitra, whose soul was dedicated to natural law (dharma), having heard Janaka's speech, addressed Rāghava (Rama) saying, 'Dear son Rama, behold the bow!'
महर्षेर्वचनाद् रामो यत्र तिष्ठति तद्धनुः ।
मञ्जूषां तामपावृत्य दृष्ट्वा धनुरथाब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. maharṣervacanād rāmo yatra tiṣṭhati taddhanuḥ ,
mañjūṣāṃ tāmapāvṛtya dṛṣṭvā dhanurathābravīt.
13. maharṣeḥ vacanāt rāmaḥ yatra tiṣṭhati tat dhanuḥ
mañjūṣām tām apāvṛtya dṛṣṭvā dhanuḥ atha abravīt
13. maharṣeḥ vacanāt rāmaḥ yatra tat dhanuḥ tiṣṭhati
tām mañjūṣām apāvṛtya dhanuḥ dṛṣṭvā atha abravīt
13. By the command of the great sage, Rama went to where that bow was kept. Having opened that box and seen the bow, he then spoke.
इदं धनुर्वरं ब्रह्मन् संस्पृशामीह पाणिना ।
यत्नवांश्च भविष्यामि तोलने पूरणे ऽपि वा ॥१४॥
14. idaṃ dhanurvaraṃ brahman saṃspṛśāmīha pāṇinā ,
yatnavāṃśca bhaviṣyāmi tolane pūraṇe'pi vā.
14. idam dhanurvaram brahman saṃspṛśāmi iha pāṇinā
yatnavān ca bhaviṣyāmi tolane pūraṇe api vā
14. brahman,
idam dhanurvaram pāṇinā iha saṃspṛśāmi.
tolane pūraṇe vā api (ca) yatnavān bhaviṣyāmi.
14. O Brahmin, I will touch this excellent bow here with my hand. I will also be diligent in either lifting it or drawing it.
बाढमित्येव तं राजा मुनिश्च समभाषत ।
लीलया स धनुर्मध्ये जग्राह वचनान्मुनेः ॥१५॥
15. bāḍhamityeva taṃ rājā muniśca samabhāṣata ,
līlayā sa dhanurmadhye jagrāha vacanānmuneḥ.
15. bāḍham iti eva tam rājā muniḥ ca samabhāṣata
līlayā saḥ dhanuḥ madhye jagrāha vacanāt muneḥ
15. rājā muniḥ ca tam,
"bāḍham" iti eva samabhāṣata.
saḥ muneḥ vacanāt līlayā dhanuḥ madhye jagrāha.
15. The king and the sage both replied to him, saying, 'So be it.' Then, at the command of the sage, he (Rama) took the bow by its middle with ease.
पश्यतां नृषहस्राणां बहूनां रघुनन्दनः ।
आरोपयत् स धर्मात्मा सलीलमिव तद्धनुः ॥१६॥
16. paśyatāṃ nṛṣahasrāṇāṃ bahūnāṃ raghunandanaḥ ,
āropayat sa dharmātmā salīlamiva taddhanuḥ.
16. paśyatām nṛsahasrāṇām bahūnām raghunandanaḥ
āropayat saḥ dharmātmā salīlam iva tat dhanuḥ
16. bahūnām nṛsahasrāṇām paśyatām,
raghunandanaḥ saḥ dharmātmā tat dhanuḥ salīlam iva āropayat.
16. As thousands of men watched, Rama, the delight of Raghu's lineage, the noble-souled one, strung that bow as if with playful ease.
आरोपयित्वा मौर्वीं च पूरयामास वीर्यवान् ।
तद्बभञ्ज धनुर्मध्ये नरश्रेष्ठो महायशाः ॥१७॥
17. āropayitvā maurvīṃ ca pūrayāmāsa vīryavān ,
tadbabhañja dhanurmadhye naraśreṣṭho mahāyaśāḥ.
17. āropayitvā maurvīm ca pūrayāmāsa vīryavān tat
babhañja dhanuḥ madhye naraśreṣṭhaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
17. vīryavān naraśreṣṭhaḥ mahāyaśāḥ maurvīm āropayitvā ca pūrayāmāsa.
tat dhanuḥ madhye babhañja.
17. The valiant one, having strung the bowstring and drawn (the bow) fully, then broke that bow in the middle; he was the best of men, the greatly glorious one.
तस्य शब्दो महानासीन्निर्घातसमनिस्वनः ।
भूमिकम्पश्च सुमहान्पर्वतस्येव दीर्यतः ॥१८॥
18. tasya śabdo mahānāsīnnirghātasamanisvanaḥ ,
bhūmikampaśca sumahānparvatasyeva dīryataḥ.
18. tasya śabdaḥ mahān āsīt nirghātasamanisvanaḥ
bhūmikampaḥ ca sumahān parvatasya iva dīryataḥ
18. The sound it made was immense, like the crash of a thunderbolt, and there was also a very great earthquake, as if a mountain were splitting apart.
निपेतुश्च नराः सर्वे तेन शब्देन मोहिताः ।
वर्जयित्वा मुनिवरं राजानं तौ च राघवौ ॥१९॥
19. nipetuśca narāḥ sarve tena śabdena mohitāḥ ,
varjayitvā munivaraṃ rājānaṃ tau ca rāghavau.
19. nipetuḥ ca narāḥ sarve tena śabdena mohitāḥ
varjayitvā munivaram rājānam tau ca rāghavau
19. And all the men, bewildered by that sound, fell down, except for the best of sages (muni), the king, and those two Raghava princes (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa).
प्रत्याश्वस्ते जने तस्मिन् राजा विगतसाध्वसः ।
उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञो मुनिपुंगवम् ॥२०॥
20. pratyāśvaste jane tasmin rājā vigatasādhvasaḥ ,
uvāca prāñjalirvākyaṃ vākyajño munipuṃgavam.
20. pratyāśvaste jane tasmin rājā vigatasādhvasaḥ
uvāca prāñjaliḥ vākyam vākyajñaḥ munipuṅgavam
20. When those people regained their composure, the king, free from fear, spoke to the best of sages (muni), who was knowledgeable in speech, with folded hands.
भगवन्दृष्टवीर्यो मे रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
अत्यद्भुतमचिन्त्यं च अतर्कितमिदं मया ॥२१॥
21. bhagavandṛṣṭavīryo me rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
atyadbhutamacintyaṃ ca atarkitamidaṃ mayā.
21. bhagavan dṛṣṭavīryaḥ me rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ
atyadbhutam acintyam ca atarkitam idam mayā
21. “O Venerable One, the prowess of Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, has been witnessed by me. This is most astonishing, inconceivable, and unexpected by me.”
जनकानां कुले कीर्तिमाहरिष्यति मे सुता ।
सीता भर्तारमासाद्य रामं दशरथात्मजम् ॥२२॥
22. janakānāṃ kule kīrtimāhariṣyati me sutā ,
sītā bhartāramāsādya rāmaṃ daśarathātmajam.
22. janakānām kule kīrtim āhariṣyati me sutā
sītā bhartāram āsādya rāmam daśarathātmajam
22. sītā me sutā daśarathātmajam rāmam bhartāram
āsādya janakānām kule kīrtim āhariṣyati
22. My daughter Sita will bring great renown to the Janaka family, having obtained Rama, the son of Dasharatha, as her husband.
मम सत्या प्रतिज्ञा च वीर्यशुल्केति कौशिक ।
सीता प्राणैर्बहुमता देया रामाय मे सुता ॥२३॥
23. mama satyā pratijñā ca vīryaśulketi kauśika ,
sītā prāṇairbahumatā deyā rāmāya me sutā.
23. mama satyā pratijñā ca vīryaśulka iti kauśika
sītā prāṇaiḥ bahumatā deyā rāmāya me sutā
23. kauśika mama vīryaśulka iti pratijñā ca satyā
prāṇaiḥ bahumatā me sutā sītā rāmāya deyā
23. O Kaushika, my vow regarding the bride-price, which is valor (vīryaśulka), is true. My daughter Sita, who is dearer to me than my very life, is to be given to Rama.
भवतो ऽनुमते ब्रह्मञ् शीघ्रं गच्छन्तु मन्त्रिणः ।
मम कौशिक भद्रं ते अयोध्यां त्वरिता रथैः ॥२४॥
24. bhavato'numate brahmañ śīghraṃ gacchantu mantriṇaḥ ,
mama kauśika bhadraṃ te ayodhyāṃ tvaritā rathaiḥ.
24. bhavataḥ anumate brahman śīghram gacchantu mantriṇaḥ
mama kauśika bhadram te ayodhyām tvaritāḥ rathaiḥ
24. brahman kauśika bhavataḥ anumate te bhadram mama
mantriṇaḥ śīghram rathaiḥ tvaritāḥ ayodhyām gacchantu
24. O Brahmana, with your permission, let my ministers quickly depart for Ayodhya by chariots. O Kaushika, may all be well with you.
राजानं प्रश्रितैर्वाक्यैरानयन्तु पुरं मम ।
प्रदानं वीर्यशुल्कायाः कथयन्तु च सर्वशः ॥२५॥
25. rājānaṃ praśritairvākyairānayantu puraṃ mama ,
pradānaṃ vīryaśulkāyāḥ kathayantu ca sarvaśaḥ.
25. rājānam praśritaiḥ vākyaiḥ ānayantu puram mama
pradānam vīryaśulkāyāḥ kathayantu ca sarvaśaḥ
25. praśritaiḥ vākyaiḥ rājānam mama puram ānayantu
ca vīryaśulkāyāḥ pradānam sarvaśaḥ kathayantu
25. Let them bring the king to my city with humble words. And let them fully report about the giving (pradāna) of the daughter for whom valor (vīryaśulka) is the bride-price.
मुनिगुप्तौ च काकुत्स्थौ कथयन्तु नृपाय वै ।
प्रीयमाणं तु राजानमानयन्तु सुशीघ्रगाः ॥२६॥
26. muniguptau ca kākutsthau kathayantu nṛpāya vai ,
prīyamāṇaṃ tu rājānamānayantu suśīghragāḥ.
26. muniguptau ca kākutsthau kathayantu nṛpāya
vai prīyamāṇam tu rājānam ānayantu suśīghragāḥ
26. suśīghragāḥ nṛpāya muniguptau kākutsthau ca
kathayantu tu prīyamāṇam rājānam ānayantu vai
26. Let the swift messengers inform the king about the two princes (descendants of Kakutstha), who are protected by the sage, and indeed, let them bring the king, who will be delighted.
कौशिकश्च तथेत्याह राजा चाभाष्य मन्त्रिणः ।
अयोध्यां प्रेषयामास धर्मात्मा कृतशासनात् ॥२७॥
27. kauśikaśca tathetyāha rājā cābhāṣya mantriṇaḥ ,
ayodhyāṃ preṣayāmāsa dharmātmā kṛtaśāsanāt.
27. kauśikaḥ ca tathā iti āha rājā ca ābhāṣya mantriṇaḥ
ayodhyām preṣayāmāsa dharmātmā kṛtaśāsanāt
27. kauśikaḥ ca tathā iti āha dharmātmā rājā ca
mantriṇaḥ ābhāṣya kṛtaśāsanāt ayodhyām preṣayāmāsa
27. And Viśvāmitra said, 'So be it.' Then, the righteous king (dharmātmā), having addressed his ministers, dispatched (messengers) to Ayodhyā in accordance with the command.
