ततः शरं दाशरथिः संधायामित्रकर्शनः ।
ससर्ज राक्षसेन्द्राय क्रुद्धः सर्प इव श्वसन् ॥१॥
1. tataḥ śaraṃ dāśarathiḥ saṃdhāyāmitrakarśanaḥ ,

1. Then, the destroyer of foes, Lakṣmaṇa, son of Daśaratha, having aimed an arrow, shot it at the lord of the rākṣasas, enraged and hissing like a serpent.
तस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषं स श्रुत्वा रावणात्मजः ।
विवर्णवदनो भूत्वा लक्ष्मणं समुदैक्षत ॥२॥
2. tasya jyātalanirghoṣaṃ sa śrutvā rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,
vivarṇavadano bhūtvā lakṣmaṇaṃ samudaikṣata.
2. tasya jyā-tala-nirghoṣam saḥ śrutvā rāvaṇa-ātmajaḥ

2. Rāvaṇa-ātmajaḥ saḥ tasya jyā-tala-nirghoṣam śrutvā vivarṇa-vadanaḥ bhūtvā lakṣmaṇam sam-ud-aikṣata.
2. Upon hearing the twang of his (Lakṣmaṇa's) bowstring, Rāvaṇa's son (Indrajit) turned pale-faced and looked at Lakṣmaṇa.
तं विषण्णमुखं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसं रावणात्मजम् ।
सौमित्रिं युद्धसंसक्तं प्रत्युवाच विभीषणः ॥३॥
3. taṃ viṣaṇṇamukhaṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasaṃ rāvaṇātmajam ,
saumitriṃ yuddhasaṃsaktaṃ pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ.
3. tam viṣaṇṇa-mukham dṛṣṭvā rākṣasam rāvaṇa-ātmajam
saumitrim yuddha-saṃsaktam prati-uvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ
3. Vibhīṣaṇaḥ tam viṣaṇṇa-mukham rākṣasam rāvaṇa-ātmajam dṛṣṭvā yuddha-saṃsaktam saumitrim prati-uvāca.
3. Having seen that rākṣasa, Rāvaṇa's son, with a dejected face, Vibhīṣaṇa spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, who was absorbed in the battle.
निमित्तान्यनुपश्यामि यान्यस्मिन् रावणात्मजे ।
त्वर तेन महाबाहो भग्न एष न संशयः ॥४॥
4. nimittānyanupaśyāmi yānyasmin rāvaṇātmaje ,
tvara tena mahābāho bhagna eṣa na saṃśayaḥ.
4. nimittāni anupaśyāmi yāni asmin rāvaṇātmaje
tvara tena mahābāho bhagnaḥ eṣaḥ na saṃśayaḥ

4. I perceive omens in this son of Rāvaṇa. Therefore, O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), hasten! He is certainly defeated, there is no doubt.
ततः संधाय सौमित्रिः शरानग्निशिखोपमान् ।
मुमोच निशितांस्तस्मै सर्वानिव विषोल्बणान् ॥५॥
5. tataḥ saṃdhāya saumitriḥ śarānagniśikhopamān ,
mumoca niśitāṃstasmai sarvāniva viṣolbaṇān.

5. Then, Lakṣmaṇa (saumitri), having strung arrows that resembled flames of fire (agniśikhopamān), released them at him - all of them sharpened and as if full of venom.
शक्राशनिसमस्पर्शैर्लक्ष्मणेनाहतः शरैः ।
मुहूर्तमभवन्मूढः सर्वसंक्षुभितेन्द्रियः ॥६॥
6. śakrāśanisamasparśairlakṣmaṇenāhataḥ śaraiḥ ,
muhūrtamabhavanmūḍhaḥ sarvasaṃkṣubhitendriyaḥ.

6. Struck by Lakṣmaṇa with arrows whose impact was like Indra's thunderbolt, he became bewildered for a moment, all his senses agitated.
उपलभ्य मुहूर्तेन संज्ञां प्रत्यागतेन्द्रियः ।
ददर्शावस्थितं वीरं वीरो दशरथात्मजम् ॥७॥
7. upalabhya muhūrtena saṃjñāṃ pratyāgatendriyaḥ ,
dadarśāvasthitaṃ vīraṃ vīro daśarathātmajam.

7. Having regained his consciousness (saṃjñā) in a moment, and with his senses restored (pratyāgateindriya), the hero (vīra) saw the brave son of Daśaratha (daśarathātmaja) standing (avasthita) there.
सो ऽभिचक्राम सौमित्रिं रोषात् संरक्तलोचनः ।
अब्रवीच्चैनमासाद्य पुनः स परुषं वचः ॥८॥
8. so'bhicakrāma saumitriṃ roṣāt saṃraktalocanaḥ ,
abravīccainamāsādya punaḥ sa paruṣaṃ vacaḥ.
8. saḥ abhicakrāma saumitrim roṣāt saṃraktalocanaḥ
abravīt ca enam āsādya punaḥ saḥ paruṣam vacaḥ

8. With blood-red eyes from anger, he (Indrajit) approached Lakṣmaṇa (saumitrim). And having reached him, he again spoke harsh words.
किं न स्मरसि तद् युद्धे प्रथमे मत्पराक्रमम् ।
निबद्धस्त्वं सह भ्रात्रा यदा युधि विचेष्टसे ॥९॥
9. kiṃ na smarasi tad yuddhe prathame matparākramam ,
nibaddhastvaṃ saha bhrātrā yadā yudhi viceṣṭase.
9. kim na smarasi tat yuddhe prathame matparākramam
nibaddhaḥ tvam saha bhrātrā yadā yudhi viceṣṭase

9. Why do you not remember my prowess in that first battle? When you, along with your brother, were bound and struggled in the fight?
युवा खलु महायुद्धे शक्राशनिसमैः शरैः ।
शायिनौ प्रथमं भूमौ विसंज्ञौ सपुरःसरौ ॥१०॥
10. yuvā khalu mahāyuddhe śakrāśanisamaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
śāyinau prathamaṃ bhūmau visaṃjñau sapuraḥsarau.

10. Indeed, in that great battle, you two (Lakṣmaṇa and Rāma), along with your elder brother, lay unconscious on the ground, struck by arrows like Indra's thunderbolt.
स्मृतिर्वा नास्ति ते मन्ये व्यक्तं वा यमसादनम् ।
गन्तुमिच्छसि यस्मात्त्वं मां धर्षयितुमिच्छसि ॥११॥
11. smṛtirvā nāsti te manye vyaktaṃ vā yamasādanam ,
gantumicchasi yasmāttvaṃ māṃ dharṣayitumicchasi.
11. smṛtiḥ vā na asti te manye vyaktam vā yamasādanam
gantum icchasi yasmāt tvam mām dharṣayitum icchasi
11. manye te smṛtiḥ vā na asti vā vyaktam yamasādanam
gantum icchasi yasmāt tvam mām dharṣayitum icchasi
11. I believe you either have no recollection, or you clearly desire to go to the realm of death (yamasādanam), because you wish to challenge me.
यदि ते प्रथमे युद्धे न दृष्टो मत्पराक्रमः ।
अद्य त्वां दर्शयिष्यामि तिष्ठेदानीं व्यवस्थितः ॥१२॥
12. yadi te prathame yuddhe na dṛṣṭo matparākramaḥ ,
adya tvāṃ darśayiṣyāmi tiṣṭhedānīṃ vyavasthitaḥ.
12. yadi te prathame yuddhe na dṛṣṭaḥ matparākramaḥ
adya tvām darśayiṣyāmi tiṣṭha idānīm vyavasthitaḥ

12. If my valor was not witnessed by you in the first battle, then today I shall certainly show it to you. Stand firm and be ready now.
इत्युक्त्वा सप्तभिर्बाणैरभिविव्याध लक्ष्मणम् ।
दशभिश्च हनूमन्तं तीक्ष्णधारैः शरोत्तमैः ॥१३॥
13. ityuktvā saptabhirbāṇairabhivivyādha lakṣmaṇam ,
daśabhiśca hanūmantaṃ tīkṣṇadhāraiḥ śarottamaiḥ.
13. iti uktvā saptabhiḥ bāṇaiḥ abhivivyādha lakṣmaṇam
daśabhiḥ ca hanūmantam tīkṣṇadhāraiḥ śarottamaiḥ
13. iti uktvā saptabhiḥ bāṇaiḥ lakṣmaṇam abhivivyādha daśabhiḥ
ca tīkṣṇadhāraiḥ śarottamaiḥ hanūmantam (abhivivyādha)
13. Having spoken thus, he struck Lakṣmaṇa with seven arrows, and Hanumān with ten excellent, sharp-edged arrows.
ततः शरशतेनैव सुप्रयुक्तेन वीर्यवान् ।
क्रोधाद्द्विगुणसंरब्धो निर्बिभेद विभीषणम् ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ śaraśatenaiva suprayuktena vīryavān ,
krodhāddviguṇasaṃrabdho nirbibheda vibhīṣaṇam.
14. tataḥ śaraśatena eva suprayuktena vīryavān
krodhāt dviguṇasaṃrabdhaḥ nirbibheda vibhīṣaṇam

14. Then, the mighty one, his fury doubled by anger, pierced Vibhīṣaṇa with a hundred well-aimed arrows.
तद्दृष्ट्वेन्द्रजितः कर्म कृतं रामानुजस्तदा ।
अचिन्तयित्वा प्रहसन्नैतत् किं चिदिति ब्रुवन् ॥१५॥
15. taddṛṣṭvendrajitaḥ karma kṛtaṃ rāmānujastadā ,
acintayitvā prahasannaitat kiṃ ciditi bruvan.
15. tat dṛṣṭvā indrajitaḥ karma kṛtam rāmānujaḥ tadā
acintayitvā prahasan na etat kim cit iti bruvan
15. tad indrajitaḥ kṛtam karma dṛṣṭvā tadā rāmānujaḥ

15. Having witnessed that deed performed by Indrajit, Rāma's younger brother (Lakṣmaṇa) then, without pondering it, laughed and said, "This is nothing significant."
मुमोच स शरान् घोरान् संगृह्य नरपुंगवः ।
अभीतवदनः क्रुद्धो रावणिं लक्ष्मणो युधि ॥१६॥
16. mumoca sa śarān ghorān saṃgṛhya narapuṃgavaḥ ,
abhītavadanaḥ kruddho rāvaṇiṃ lakṣmaṇo yudhi.
16. mumoca sa śarān ghorān saṅgṛhya narapuṅgavaḥ
abhītavadanaḥ kruddhaḥ rāvaṇim lakṣmaṇaḥ yudhi

16. Lakṣmaṇa, that foremost of men, enraged and with an undaunted expression, took up his weapons and released terrible arrows at Rāvaṇa's son in battle.
नैवं रणगतः शूराः प्रहरन्ति निशाचर ।
लघवश्चाल्पवीर्याश्च सुखा हीमे शरास्तव ॥१७॥
17. naivaṃ raṇagataḥ śūrāḥ praharanti niśācara ,
laghavaścālpavīryāśca sukhā hīme śarāstava.
17. na evam raṇagataḥ śūrāḥ praharanti niśācara |
laghavaḥ ca alpavīryāḥ ca sukhāḥ hi ime śarāḥ tava
17. he niśācara,
raṇagataḥ śūrāḥ evam na praharanti hi tava ime śarāḥ laghavaḥ ca alpavīryāḥ ca sukhāḥ
17. "O night-demon (niśācara), heroes who have entered battle do not strike like this. Indeed, these arrows of yours are insignificant, of little power, and easily overcome."
नैवं शूरास्तु युध्यन्ते समरे जयकाङ्क्षिणः ।
इत्येवं तं ब्रुवाणस्तु शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥१८॥
18. naivaṃ śūrāstu yudhyante samare jayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ,
ityevaṃ taṃ bruvāṇastu śaravarṣairavākirat.
18. na evam śūrāḥ tu yudhyante samare jayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
| iti evam tam bruvāṇaḥ tu śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
18. jayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ śūrāḥ tu samare evam na yudhyante
iti evam tam bruvāṇaḥ tu śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
18. "Indeed, heroes who seek victory do not fight like this in battle." Having spoken these very words to him, Lakṣmaṇa then showered him with volleys of arrows.
तस्य बाणैस्तु विध्वस्तं कवचं हेमभूषितम् ।
व्यशीर्यत रथोपस्थे ताराजालमिवाम्बरात् ॥१९॥
19. tasya bāṇaistu vidhvastaṃ kavacaṃ hemabhūṣitam ,
vyaśīryata rathopasthe tārājālamivāmbarāt.
19. tasya bāṇaiḥ tu vidhvastaṃ kavacaṃ hemabhūṣitam

19. Indeed, his golden-adorned armor, shattered by (Lakṣmaṇa's) arrows, disintegrated upon the platform of the chariot, just like a cluster of stars falling from the sky.
विधूतवर्मा नाराचैर्बभूव स कृतव्रणः ।
इन्द्रजित् समरे शूरः प्ररूढ इव सानुमान् ॥२०॥
20. vidhūtavarmā nārācairbabhūva sa kṛtavraṇaḥ ,
indrajit samare śūraḥ prarūḍha iva sānumān.
20. vidhūtavarmā nārācaiḥ babhūva sa kṛtavraṇaḥ
indrajit samare śūraḥ prarūḍhaḥ iva sānumān

20. With his armor shattered by arrows, he became wounded. The heroic Indrajit, in battle, stood like a towering mountain.
अभीक्ष्णं निश्वसन्तौ हि युध्येतां तुमुलं युधि ।
शरसंकृत्तसर्वाङ्गो सर्वतो रुधिरोक्षितौ ॥२१॥
21. abhīkṣṇaṃ niśvasantau hi yudhyetāṃ tumulaṃ yudhi ,
śarasaṃkṛttasarvāṅgo sarvato rudhirokṣitau.
21. abhīkṣṇam niśvasantau hi yudhyetām tumulam yudhi
śarasaṃkṛttasarvāṅgau sarvato rudhirokṣitau
21. hi abhīkṣṇam niśvasantau yudhi tumulam yudhyetām

21. Indeed, frequently sighing, the two fought fiercely in battle, their entire bodies cut by arrows and drenched in blood from all sides.
अस्त्राण्यस्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठौ दर्शयन्तौ पुनः पुनः ।
शरानुच्चावचाकारानन्तरिक्षे बबन्धतुः ॥२२॥
22. astrāṇyastravidāṃ śreṣṭhau darśayantau punaḥ punaḥ ,
śarānuccāvacākārānantarikṣe babandhatuḥ.
22. astrāṇi astravidām śreṣṭhau darśayantau punaḥ
punaḥ śarān uccāvacākārān antarikṣe babandhatuḥ
22. astravidām śreṣṭhau darśayantau punaḥ punaḥ

22. The two foremost experts in weapons (astras), repeatedly demonstrating their skill, formed arrows of diverse shapes in the sky.
व्यपेतदोषमस्यन्तौ लघुचित्रं च सुष्ठु च ।
उभौ तु तुमुलं घोरं चक्रतुर्नरराक्षसौ ॥२३॥
23. vyapetadoṣamasyantau laghucitraṃ ca suṣṭhu ca ,
ubhau tu tumulaṃ ghoraṃ cakraturnararākṣasau.
23. vyapetadoṣam asyantau laghucitram ca suṣṭhu ca
ubhau tu tumulam ghoram cakratuḥ nararākṣasau
23. tu ubhau nararākṣasau vyapetadoṣam laghucitram
ca suṣṭhu ca asyantau tumulam ghoram cakratuḥ
23. Both the human and the demon (nararākṣasau), indeed, discharged (arrows) flawlessly, swiftly, skillfully, and very well. And they both waged a fierce and dreadful battle.
तयोः पृथक्पृथग्भीमः शुश्रुवे तलनिस्वनः ।
सुघोरयोर्निष्टनतोर्गगने मेघयोरिव ॥२४॥
24. tayoḥ pṛthakpṛthagbhīmaḥ śuśruve talanisvanaḥ ,
sughorayorniṣṭanatorgagane meghayoriva.
24. tayoḥ pṛthakpṛthak bhīmaḥ śuśruve talanisvanaḥ
sughorayoḥ niṣṭanatoḥ gagane meghayoḥ iva

24. A formidable sound of their palms striking was heard distinctly from each of them, like the roaring of two extremely dreadful clouds in the sky.
ते गात्रयोर्निपतिता रुक्मपुङ्खाः शरा युधि ।
असृग्दिग्धा विनिष्पेतुर्विविशुर्धरणीतलम् ॥२५॥
25. te gātrayornipatitā rukmapuṅkhāḥ śarā yudhi ,
asṛgdigdhā viniṣpeturviviśurdharaṇītalam.
25. te gātrayoḥ nipatitāḥ rukmapuṅkhāḥ śarāḥ yudhi
asṛgdigdhāḥ viniṣpetuḥ viviśuḥ dharaṇītalam
25. rukmapuṅkhāḥ te śarāḥ yudhi gātrayoḥ nipatitāḥ
asṛgdigdhāḥ viniṣpetuḥ dharaṇītalam viviśuḥ
25. Those arrows, with golden shafts, struck their two bodies in the battle. Smeared with blood, they flew out and penetrated the earth's surface.
अन्यैः सुनिशितैः शस्त्रैराकाशे संजघट्टिरे ।
बभञ्जुश्चिच्छिदुश्चापि तयोर्बाणाः सहस्रशः ॥२६॥
26. anyaiḥ suniśitaiḥ śastrairākāśe saṃjaghaṭṭire ,
babhañjuścicchiduścāpi tayorbāṇāḥ sahasraśaḥ.
26. anyaiḥ suniśitaiḥ śastraiḥ ākāśe saṃjaghaṭṭire
babhañjuḥ cicchiduḥ ca api tayoḥ bāṇāḥ sahasraśaḥ
26. tayoḥ bāṇāḥ sahasraśaḥ anyaiḥ suniśitaiḥ śastraiḥ
ākāśe saṃjaghaṭṭire ca api babhañjuḥ cicchiduḥ
26. Thousands of their arrows clashed in the sky with other very sharp weapons, and they (the arrows) broke and cut (the opposing arrows).
स बभूव रणे घोरस्तयोर्बाणमयश्चयः ।
अग्निभ्यामिव दीप्ताभ्यां सत्रे कुशमयश्चयः ॥२७॥
27. sa babhūva raṇe ghorastayorbāṇamayaścayaḥ ,
agnibhyāmiva dīptābhyāṃ satre kuśamayaścayaḥ.

27. A dreadful pile of their arrows was formed in the battle, resembling a pile of kuśa grass for two blazing fires in a (Vedic ritual).
तयोः कृतव्रणौ देहौ शुशुभाते महात्मनोः ।
सपुष्पाविव निष्पत्रौ वने शाल्मलिकुंशुकौ ॥२८॥
28. tayoḥ kṛtavraṇau dehau śuśubhāte mahātmanoḥ ,
sapuṣpāviva niṣpatrau vane śālmalikuṃśukau.

28. The wounded bodies of those two great souls shone brightly, much like leafless śālmalī and kuṃśuka trees in a forest covered with blossoms.
चक्रतुस्तुमुलं घोरं संनिपातं मुहुर्मुहुः ।
इन्द्रजिल् लक्ष्मणश्चैव परस्परजयैषिणौ ॥२९॥
29. cakratustumulaṃ ghoraṃ saṃnipātaṃ muhurmuhuḥ ,
indrajil lakṣmaṇaścaiva parasparajayaiṣiṇau.
29. cakratuḥ tumulam ghoram saṃnipātam muhurmuhuḥ
indrajit lakṣmaṇaḥ ca eva parasparajayaiṣiṇau
29. indrajit ca lakṣmaṇaḥ eva parasparajayaiṣiṇau
muhurmuhuḥ tumulam ghoram saṃnipātam cakratuḥ
29. Indrajit and Lakṣmaṇa, both eager for victory over each other, repeatedly engaged in a tumultuous and terrible clash.
लक्ष्मणो रावणिं युद्धे रावणिश्चापि लक्ष्मणम् ।
अन्योन्यं तावभिघ्नन्तौ न श्रमं प्रत्यपद्यताम् ॥३०॥
30. lakṣmaṇo rāvaṇiṃ yuddhe rāvaṇiścāpi lakṣmaṇam ,
anyonyaṃ tāvabhighnantau na śramaṃ pratyapadyatām.
30. lakṣmaṇaḥ rāvaṇim yuddhe rāvaṇiḥ ca api lakṣmaṇam
anyonyam tau abhighnantau na śramam pratyapadyatām
30. yuddhe lakṣmaṇaḥ rāvaṇim rāvaṇiḥ ca api lakṣmaṇam
tau anyonyam abhighnantau śramam na pratyapadyatām
30. In battle, Lakṣmaṇa struck Indrajit, and Indrajit in turn struck Lakṣmaṇa. Those two, continuously striking each other, felt no weariness.
बाणजालैः शरीरस्थैरवगाढैस्तरस्विनौ ।
शुशुभाते महावीरौ विरूढाविव पर्वतौ ॥३१॥
31. bāṇajālaiḥ śarīrasthairavagāḍhaistarasvinau ,
śuśubhāte mahāvīrau virūḍhāviva parvatau.

śuśubhāte mahāvīrau virūḍhau iva parvatāu

31. Those two powerful great heroes, with networks of deeply embedded arrows piercing their bodies, shone like two mountains covered with growing trees.
तयो रुधिरसिक्तानि संवृतानि शरैर्भृशम् ।
बभ्राजुः सर्वगात्राणि ज्वलन्त इव पावकाः ॥३२॥
32. tayo rudhirasiktāni saṃvṛtāni śarairbhṛśam ,
babhrājuḥ sarvagātrāṇi jvalanta iva pāvakāḥ.
32. tayoḥ rudhirasiktāni saṃvṛtāni śaraiḥ bhṛśam
babhrājuḥ sarvagātrāṇi jvalantaḥ iva pāvakāḥ
32. tayoḥ rudhirasiktāni śaraiḥ bhṛśam saṃvṛtāni
sarvagātrāṇi jvalantaḥ pāvakāḥ iva babhrājuḥ
32. The entire bodies of those two, heavily drenched in blood and thoroughly covered with arrows, shone like blazing fires.
तयोरथ महान् कालो व्यतीयाद् युध्यमानयोः ।
न च तौ युद्धवैमुख्यं श्रमं वाप्युपजग्मतुः ॥३३॥
33. tayoratha mahān kālo vyatīyād yudhyamānayoḥ ,
na ca tau yuddhavaimukhyaṃ śramaṃ vāpyupajagmatuḥ.
33. tayoḥ atha mahān kālaḥ vyatīyāt yudhyamānayoḥ na
ca tau yuddhavaimukhyam śramam vā api upajagmatuḥ
33. atha yudhyamānayoḥ tayoḥ mahān kālaḥ vyatīyāt ca
tau yuddhavaimukhyam śramam vā api na upajagmatuḥ
33. Then, a long time passed while those two were fighting. Yet, they did not experience aversion to battle nor even fatigue.
अथ समरपरिश्रमं निहन्तुं समरमुखेष्वजितस्य लक्ष्मणस्य ।
प्रियहितमुपपादयन्महौजाः समरमुपेत्य विभीषणो ऽवतस्थे ॥३४॥
34. atha samarapariśramaṃ nihantuṃ samaramukheṣvajitasya lakṣmaṇasya ,
priyahitamupapādayanmahaujāḥ samaramupetya vibhīṣaṇo'vatasthe.
34. atha samaripariśramam nihantum
samaramukheṣu ajitasya lakṣmaṇasya
priyahitam upapādayan mahaujāḥ
samaram upetya vibhīṣaṇaḥ avatasthe
34. atha mahaujāḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ajitasya
lakṣmaṇasya samaramukheṣu
samaripariśramam nihantum priyahitam
upapādayan samaram upetya avatasthe
34. Then, the mighty Vibhīṣaṇa, providing what was beneficial and dear to the unconquered Lakṣmaṇa (who was experiencing battle-fatigue at the forefront of the fight), approached the battle and took his stand.
