Then, Vaidehi (Sita), questioned by Ravana, who intended to abduct her and was disguised as an ascetic, described herself personally.
ब्राह्मणश्चातिथिश्चैष अनुक्तो हि शपेत माम् ।
इति ध्यात्वा मुहूर्तं तु सीता वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२॥

2. brāhmaṇaścātithiścaiṣa anukto hi śapeta mām ,

"This one (Ravana in disguise) is a Brahmin and also a guest. If he is not addressed, he might surely curse me." Having pondered thus for a moment, Sita then spoke these words.
दुहिता जनकस्याहं मैथिलस्य महात्मनः ।
सीता नाम्नास्मि भद्रं ते रामभार्या द्विजोत्तम ॥३॥

I am Sītā, the daughter of Janaka, the great-souled king of Mithila. My name is Sītā, and I am Rāma's wife. May you be well, O best among the twice-born (brāhmaṇa).
संवत्सरं चाध्युषिता राघवस्य निवेशने ।
भुञ्जाना मानुषान्भोगान् सर्वकामसमृद्धिनी ॥४॥

And I resided for a year in Rāghava's abode, enjoying human pleasures and experiencing the fulfillment of all my desires.
ततः संवत्सरादूर्ध्वं सममन्यत मे पतिम् ।
अभिषेचयितुं रामं समेतो राजमन्त्रिभिः ॥५॥

Then, after a year, [King Daśaratha] resolved, along with his royal ministers, to anoint my husband, Rāma, [as crown prince].
तस्मिन् संभ्रियमाणे तु राघवस्याभिषेचने ।
कैकेयी नाम भर्तारं ममार्या याचते वरम् ॥६॥

However, while that consecration of Rāghava (Rāma) was being prepared, my venerable mother-in-law, Kaikeyī by name, asked her husband (King Daśaratha) for a boon.
प्रतिगृह्य तु कैकेयी श्वशुरं सुकृतेन मे ।
मम प्रव्राजनं भर्तुर्भरतस्याभिषेचनम् ।
द्वावयाचत भर्तारं सत्यसंधं नृपोत्तमम् ॥७॥

Kaikeyi, having indeed received from my father-in-law (King Daśaratha) by virtue of her past merit (which earned her a boon), asked her truthful husband, the best among kings, for two things: my husband's exile and Bharata's consecration.
नाद्य भोक्ष्ये न च स्वप्स्ये न पास्ये ऽहं कदा चन ।
एष मे जीवितस्यान्तो रामो यद्यभिषिच्यते ॥८॥

(Kaikeyi declared:) "I will not eat today, nor will I sleep, nor will I ever drink. This is the end of my life if Rāma is consecrated."
इति ब्रुवाणां कैकेयीं श्वशुरो मे स मानदः ।
अयाचतार्थैरन्वर्थैर्न च याच्ञां चकार सा ॥९॥

My father-in-law (King Daśaratha), that giver of honor, begged Kaikeyi, who was speaking thus, with appropriate and meaningful arguments, but she did not give up her demand.
मम भर्ता महातेजा वयसा पञ्चविंशकः ।
रामेति प्रथितो लोके गुणवान् सत्यवाक् शुचिः ।
विशालाक्षो महाबाहुः सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥१०॥

10. mama bhartā mahātejā vayasā pañcaviṃśakaḥ ,

mama bhartā mahātejāḥ vayasā pañcaviṃśakaḥ (saḥ) loke rāmaḥ iti prathitaḥ (asti).

My husband, Rāma, is greatly effulgent and twenty-five years of age. He is renowned in the world, virtuous, truthful, pure, broad-eyed, mighty-armed, and devoted to the welfare of all beings.

When Rama arrived near his father for the consecration, Kaikeyi quickly spoke these words to my husband.
तव पित्रा समाज्ञप्तं ममेदं शृणु राघव ।
भरताय प्रदातव्यमिदं राज्यमकण्टकम् ॥१२॥

12. tava pitrā samājñaptaṃ mamedaṃ śṛṇu rāghava ,
bharatāya pradātavyamidaṃ rājyamakaṇṭakam.

O Raghava, listen to this [command] given to me by your father: this undisputed kingdom is to be given to Bharata.
त्वया तु खलु वस्तव्यं नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च ।
वने प्रव्रज काकुत्स्थ पितरं मोचयानृतात् ॥१३॥

13. tvayā tu khalu vastavyaṃ nava varṣāṇi pañca ca ,

But you, indeed, must reside in the forest for nine and five years [i.e., fourteen years]. O Kakutstha, go forth into the forest and release your father from his falsehood (anṛta).
तथेत्युवाच तां रामः कैकेयीमकुतोभयः ।
चकार तद्वचस्तस्या मम भर्ता दृढव्रतः ॥१४॥

Fearless Rama said to Kaikeyi, 'So be it.' My husband [Dasharatha], firm in his vow (dṛḍhavrata), fulfilled her command.
दद्यान्न प्रतिगृह्णीयात् सत्यब्रूयान्न चानृतम् ।
एतद्ब्राह्मण रामस्य व्रतं ध्रुवमनुत्तमम् ॥१५॥

15. dadyānna pratigṛhṇīyāt satyabrūyānna cānṛtam ,
etadbrāhmaṇa rāmasya vrataṃ dhruvamanuttamam.

O Brahmin, this is Rama's constant and supreme vow: he should give, but never take; he should always speak the truth, and never falsehood.
तस्य भ्राता तु वैमात्रो लक्ष्मणो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
रामस्य पुरुषव्याघ्रः सहायः समरे ऽरिहा ॥१६॥

16. tasya bhrātā tu vaimātro lakṣmaṇo nāma vīryavān ,
rāmasya puruṣavyāghraḥ sahāyaḥ samare'rihā.

Indeed, his step-brother, named Lakshmana, who is valorous, a tiger among men (puruṣa), and a slayer of enemies, is Rama's companion in battle.
स भ्राता लक्ष्मणो नाम धर्मचारी दृढव्रतः ।
अन्वगच्छद्धनुष्पाणिः प्रव्रजन्तं मया सह ॥१७॥

17. sa bhrātā lakṣmaṇo nāma dharmacārī dṛḍhavrataḥ ,

That brother, named Lakshmana, who observes the natural law (dharma) and is resolute in his vows, followed me, bow in hand, as I went into exile.
ते वयं प्रच्युता राज्यात् कैलेय्यास्तु कृते त्रयः ।
विचराम द्विजश्रेष्ठ वनं गम्भीरमोजसा ॥१८॥

18. te vayaṃ pracyutā rājyāt kaileyyāstu kṛte trayaḥ ,
vicarāma dvijaśreṣṭha vanaṃ gambhīramojasā.

dvijaśreṣṭha tu kaikeyīyāḥ kṛte te trayaḥ vayam

O best of brahmins (dvijaśreṣṭha), for Kaikeyi's sake, we three, indeed deprived of the kingdom, wander through the deep forest with our strength.
समाश्वस मुहूर्तं तु शक्यं वस्तुमिह त्वया ।
आगमिष्यति मे भर्ता वन्यमादाय पुष्कलम् ॥१९॥

19. samāśvasa muhūrtaṃ tu śakyaṃ vastumiha tvayā ,
āgamiṣyati me bhartā vanyamādāya puṣkalam.

Please rest for a moment; it is possible for you to stay here. My husband will return, bringing a plentiful amount of forest fruits and roots.
स त्वं नाम च गोत्रं च कुलमाचक्ष्व तत्त्वतः ।
एकश्च दण्डकारण्ये किमर्थं चरसि द्विज ॥२०॥

20. sa tvaṃ nāma ca gotraṃ ca kulamācakṣva tattvataḥ ,
ekaśca daṇḍakāraṇye kimarthaṃ carasi dvija.

Therefore, you, tell me your name, family (gotra), and lineage truly. And why, O Brahmin, do you wander alone in the Daṇḍaka forest?
एवं ब्रुवत्यां सीतायां रामपत्न्यां महाबलः ।
प्रत्युवाचोत्तरं तीव्रं रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ॥२१॥

21. evaṃ bruvatyāṃ sītāyāṃ rāmapatnyāṃ mahābalaḥ ,

21.

While Sītā, the wife of Rāma, was speaking thus, the immensely powerful Rāvaṇa, king of the Rākṣasas, gave a sharp reply.

O Sītā, I am that Rāvaṇa by whom all the worlds - including gods, asuras, and nāgas - have been terrified; I am the lord of the Rākṣasa hordes.

O blameless one, having seen you, who shine with the luster of gold and are clad in silk, I no longer find pleasure in my own wives.

But Janaka's daughter, Sītā, whose form was faultless, became enraged after being addressed thus by Rāvaṇa. Disregarding that demon (Rākṣasa), she replied to him.

But you, like a jackal, desire me here, an unattainable lioness. Just as the sun's radiance is impossible to grasp, so I am not to be touched by you.

O ill-fated Ravana, you must surely be seeing many golden trees, since you desire Raghava's beloved wife.

You try to rub (your eye) with an eye-needle and you lick a razor with your tongue. You wish to obtain the beloved wife of Rāghava (Rāma).

सूर्या चन्द्रमसौ चोभौ प्राणिभ्यां हर्तुमिच्छसि ।
यो रामस्य प्रियां भार्यां प्रधर्षयितुमिच्छसि ॥३७॥

You wish to cross the ocean with a stone tied around your neck. You wish to seize both the sun and the moon with your two hands. You are the one who wishes to outrage Rāma's beloved wife.
अग्निं प्रज्वलितं दृष्ट्वा वस्त्रेणाहर्तुमिच्छसि ।
कल्याण वृत्तां रामस्य यो भार्यां हर्तुमिच्छसि ॥३८॥

You wish to walk upon the tips of iron-pointed spears, you who desire to obtain a wife like Rama's.

Whatever difference exists between a lion and a jackal in the forest, whatever difference there is between a small stream and an ocean, and whatever difference lies between excellent liquor and Sauvīra - that very difference exists between you and the son of Daśaratha, Rama.

Whatever difference exists between gold and the combination of lead and iron, whatever difference there is between sandalwood-water and mud, and whatever difference lies between an elephant and a cat in the forest - that very difference exists between you and the son of Daśaratha, Rama.
यदन्तरं वायसवैनतेययोर्यदन्तरं मद्गुमयूरयोरपि ।
यदन्तरं सारसगृध्रयोर्वने तदन्तरं दाशरथेस्तवैव च ॥४२॥

Whatever difference exists between a crow and a Garuḍa (eagle), whatever difference there is also between a diver bird and a peacock, and whatever difference lies between a saras crane and a vulture in the forest - that very difference exists between you and the son of Daśaratha, Rama.
तस्मिन् सहस्राक्षसमप्रभावे रामे स्थिते कार्मुकबाणपाणौ ।
हृतापि ते ऽहं न जरां गमिष्ये वज्रं यथा मक्षिकयावगीर्णम् ॥४३॥

43. tasmin sahasrākṣasamaprabhāve rāme sthite kārmukabāṇapāṇau ,
hṛtāpi te'haṃ na jarāṃ gamiṣye vajraṃ yathā makṣikayāvagīrṇam.

tasmin sahasrākṣasamaprabhāve
rāme sthite kārmukabāṇapāṇau hṛtā

kārmukabāṇapāṇau sahasrākṣasamaprabhāve rāme tasmin sthite te hṛtā api aham jarām na gamiṣye,
yathā makṣikayā avagīrṇam vajram (na gamiṣyati)

Even if I am abducted by you, I will not decay, just as a thunderbolt (vajra) swallowed by a fly does not perish, while Rama, who possesses a bow and arrows in his hands and whose might rivals that of Indra (Sahasrākṣa), is still present.
इतीव तद्वाक्यमदुष्टभावा सुदृष्टमुक्त्वा रजनीचरं तम् ।
गात्रप्रकम्पाद्व्यथिता बभूव वातोद्धता सा कदलीव तन्वी ॥४४॥

44. itīva tadvākyamaduṣṭabhāvā sudṛṣṭamuktvā rajanīcaraṃ tam ,

aduṣṭabhāvā sā iti iva sudṛṣṭam tat vākyam tam rajanīcaram uktvā gātraprkampāt vyathitā babhūva,

Having thus spoken those well-reasoned words to that night-prowler (Rākṣasa), she, whose heart was unblemished, became distressed from the trembling of her limbs, like a slender plantain tree tossed by the wind.
तां वेपमानामुपलक्ष्य सीतां स रावणो मृत्युसमप्रभावः ।
कुलं बलं नाम च कर्म चात्मनः समाचचक्षे भयकारणार्थम् ॥४५॥

45. tāṃ vepamānāmupalakṣya sītāṃ sa rāvaṇo mṛtyusamaprabhāvaḥ ,

45.
That Rāvaṇa, whose power was like that of death, observing Sītā trembling, then described his lineage, strength, name, and his own deeds (karma) to her, for the purpose of instilling fear.
