हतेषु तेषु पुत्रेषु दितिः परमदुःखिता ।
मारीचं काश्यपं राम भर्तारमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. O Rāma, when those sons were killed, Diti, extremely distressed, said this to her husband, Marīca Kaśyapa.
हतपुत्रास्मि भगवंस्तव पुत्रैर्महाबलैः ।
शक्रहन्तारमिच्छामि पुत्रं दीर्घतपोऽर्जितम् ॥२॥
2. hataputrāsmi bhagavaṃstava putrairmahābalaiḥ ,
śakrahantāramicchāmi putraṃ dīrghatapo'rjitam.
2. hataputrā asmi bhagavan tava putraiḥ mahābalaiḥ
śakrahantāram icchāmi putram dīrghatapas arjitam

2. "O revered one (bhagavan), I am bereft of sons, killed by your immensely powerful sons. I desire a son who will be a slayer of Indra, obtained through prolonged ascetic effort (tapas)."
साहं तपश्चरिष्यामि गर्भं मे दातुमर्हसि ।
ईदृशं शक्रहन्तारं त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥३॥
3. sāhaṃ tapaścariṣyāmi garbhaṃ me dātumarhasi ,
īdṛśaṃ śakrahantāraṃ tvamanujñātumarhasi.
3. sā aham tapas cariṣyāmi garbham me dātum arhasi
īdṛśam śakrahantāram tvam anujñātum arhasi
3. sā aham tapas cariṣyāmi me garbham dātum arhasi
tvam īdṛśam śakrahantāram anujñātum arhasi
3. "Therefore, I shall perform ascetic practices (tapas); you ought to grant me a child. You should permit such a slayer of Indra."
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मारीचः काश्यपस्तदा ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजा दितिं परमदुःखिताम् ॥४॥
4. tasyāstadvacanaṃ śrutvā mārīcaḥ kāśyapastadā ,
pratyuvāca mahātejā ditiṃ paramaduḥkhitām.
4. tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā marīcaḥ kāśyapaḥ tadā
pratyuvāca mahātejāḥ ditim paramaduḥkhitām

4. Having heard her words, Marīca Kaśyapa, the greatly radiant one, then replied to Diti, who was extremely distressed.
एवं भवतु भद्रं ते शुचिर्भव तपोधने ।
जनयिष्यसि पुत्रं त्वं शक्र हन्तारमाहवे ॥५॥
5. evaṃ bhavatu bhadraṃ te śucirbhava tapodhane ,
janayiṣyasi putraṃ tvaṃ śakra hantāramāhave.
5. evam bhavatu bhadram te śuciḥ bhava tapodhane
janayiṣyasi putram tvam śakra hantāram āhave
5. evam bhavatu te bhadram tapodhane tvam śuciḥ
bhava putram śakra hantāram āhave janayiṣyasi
5. So be it. May good fortune come to you. Be pure, O ascetic woman. You will bear a son who will be the slayer of Śakra (Indra) in battle.
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु शुचिर्यदि भविष्यसि ।
पुत्रं त्रैलोक्य हन्तारं मत्तस्त्वं जनयिष्यसि ॥६॥
6. pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu śuciryadi bhaviṣyasi ,
putraṃ trailokya hantāraṃ mattastvaṃ janayiṣyasi.
6. pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu śuciḥ yadi bhaviṣyasi
putram trailokya hantāram mattaḥ tvam janayiṣyasi
6. tu pūrṇe varṣasahasre yadi tvam śuciḥ bhaviṣyasi
mattaḥ trailokya hantāram putram janayiṣyasi
6. But if you remain pure after a full thousand years, you will bear from me a son who will be the slayer of the three worlds.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजाः पाणिना स ममार्ज ताम् ।
समालभ्य ततः स्वस्तीत्युक्त्वा स तपसे ययौ ॥७॥
7. evamuktvā mahātejāḥ pāṇinā sa mamārja tām ,
samālabhya tataḥ svastītyuktvā sa tapase yayau.
7. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ pāṇinā saḥ mamārja tām
samālabhya tataḥ svasti iti uktvā saḥ tapase yayau
7. mahātejāḥ saḥ evam uktvā pāṇinā tām mamārja tataḥ

7. Having spoken thus, that greatly radiant one (Kaśyapa) stroked her with his hand. Then, having touched her well and saying 'May there be welfare!', he departed for his ascetic practice (tapas).
गते तस्मिन्नरश्रेष्ठ दितिः परमहर्षिता ।
कुशप्लवनमासाद्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥८॥
8. gate tasminnaraśreṣṭha ditiḥ paramaharṣitā ,
kuśaplavanamāsādya tapastepe sudāruṇam.
8. gate tasmin nareśreṣṭha ditiḥ paramaharṣitā
kuśaplavanam āsādya tapaḥ tepe sudāruṇam
8. nareśreṣṭha tasmin gate ditiḥ paramaharṣitā
kuśaplavanam āsādya sudāruṇam tapaḥ tepe
8. O best among men, when he had gone, Diti, exceedingly delighted, went to Kuśaplavana and performed very severe asceticism (tapas).
तपस्तस्यां हि कुर्वत्यां परिचर्यां चकार ह ।
सहस्राक्षो नरश्रेष्ठ परया गुणसंपदा ॥९॥
9. tapastasyāṃ hi kurvatyāṃ paricaryāṃ cakāra ha ,
sahasrākṣo naraśreṣṭha parayā guṇasaṃpadā.
9. tapas tasyām hi kurvatyām paricaryām cakāra
ha sahasrākṣaḥ naraśreṣṭha parayā guṇasaṃpadā
9. naraśreṣṭha hi tasyām tapas kurvatyām sahasrākṣaḥ
parayā guṇasaṃpadā paricaryām cakāra ha
9. O best of men, indeed, while she was performing asceticism (tapas), the thousand-eyed Indra (Sahasrakṣa) rendered service with supreme virtues.
अग्निं कुशान् काष्ठमपः फलं मूलं तथैव च ।
न्यवेदयत् सहस्राक्षो यच्चान्यदपि काङ्क्षितम् ॥१०॥
10. agniṃ kuśān kāṣṭhamapaḥ phalaṃ mūlaṃ tathaiva ca ,
nyavedayat sahasrākṣo yaccānyadapi kāṅkṣitam.
10. agnim kuśān kāṣṭham apaḥ phalam mūlam tatha eva ca
nyavedayat sahasrākṣaḥ yat ca anyat api kāṅkṣitam
10. sahasrākṣaḥ agnim kuśān kāṣṭham apaḥ phalam mūlam
tatha eva ca yat ca anyat api kāṅkṣitam nyavedayat
10. The thousand-eyed Indra (Sahasrakṣa) offered fire, kusha grass, wood, water, fruit, roots, and whatever else was desired, similarly.
गात्रसंवाहनैश्चैव श्रमापनयनैस्तथा ।
शक्रः सर्वेषु कालेषु दितिं परिचचार ह ॥११॥
11. gātrasaṃvāhanaiścaiva śramāpanayanaistathā ,
śakraḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu ditiṃ paricacāra ha.
11. gātrasaṃvāhanaiḥ ca eva śramāpanayanaiḥ tathā
śakraḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu ditim paricacāra ha
11. śakraḥ hi gātrasaṃvāhanaiḥ ca eva tathā
śramāpanayanaiḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu ditim paricacāra
11. And indeed, by massaging her limbs and by relieving her fatigue, Indra (Śakra) served Diti at all times.
अथ वर्षसहस्रेतु दशोने रघु नन्दन ।
दितिः परमसंप्रीता सहस्राक्षमथाब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. atha varṣasahasretu daśone raghu nandana ,
ditiḥ paramasaṃprītā sahasrākṣamathābravīt.
12. atha varṣasahasre tu daśa ūne raghu nandana
ditiḥ parama samprītā sahasrākṣam atha abravīt
12. raghu nandana atha tu varṣasahasre daśa ūne
ditiḥ parama samprītā atha sahasrākṣam abravīt
12. O delight of Raghu, then, after nine hundred and ninety years (a thousand lacking ten), Diti, extremely pleased, then spoke to Indra (Sahasrakṣa).
तपश्चरन्त्या वर्षाणि दश वीर्यवतां वर ।
अवशिष्टानि भद्रं ते भ्रातरं द्रक्ष्यसे ततः ॥१३॥
13. tapaścarantyā varṣāṇi daśa vīryavatāṃ vara ,
avaśiṣṭāni bhadraṃ te bhrātaraṃ drakṣyase tataḥ.
13. tapas carantyā varṣāṇi daśa vīryavatām vara
avaśiṣṭāni bhadram te bhrātaram drakṣyase tataḥ
13. vīryavatām vara,
tapas carantyā daśa varṣāṇi avaśiṣṭāni; te bhadram; tataḥ bhrātaram drakṣyase.
13. O best among the valiant, ten years of my penance (tapas) remain. May good fortune be with you; thereafter you will see your brothers.
तमहं त्वत्कृते पुत्र समाधास्ये जयोत्सुकम् ।
त्रैलोक्यविजयं पुत्र सह भोक्ष्यसि विज्वरः ॥१४॥
14. tamahaṃ tvatkṛte putra samādhāsye jayotsukam ,
trailokyavijayaṃ putra saha bhokṣyasi vijvaraḥ.
14. tam aham tvatkṛte putra samādhāsye jayotsukam
trailokyavijayam putra saha bhokṣyasi vijvaraḥ
14. putra,
tvatkṛte aham jayotsukam tam samādhāsye; putra,
vijvaraḥ (tvam) trailokyavijayam saha bhokṣyasi.
14. O son, for your sake I will reconcile him (my son/the Maruts), who is eager for victory. O son, you will enjoy the victory over the three worlds together, free from distress.
एवमुक्त्वा दितिः शक्रं प्राप्ते मध्यं दिवाकरे ।
निद्रयापहृता देवी पादौ कृत्वाथ शीर्षतः ॥१५॥
15. evamuktvā ditiḥ śakraṃ prāpte madhyaṃ divākare ,
nidrayāpahṛtā devī pādau kṛtvātha śīrṣataḥ.
15. evam uktvā ditiḥ śakram prāpte madhyam divākare
nidrayā apahṛtā devī pādau kṛtvā atha śīrṣataḥ
15. evam śakram uktvā,
ditiḥ; divākare madhyam prāpte (sati),
devī nidrayā apahṛtā (abhavat),
atha pādau śīrṣataḥ kṛtvā (śayita).
15. Having spoken thus to Indra, as the sun reached its zenith (midday), the goddess Diti was overcome by sleep and, placing her feet where her head should be, she assumed an inauspicious posture.
दृष्ट्वा तामशुचिं शक्रः पादतः कृतमूर्धजाम् ।
शिरःस्थाने कृतौ पादौ जहास च मुमोद च ॥१६॥
16. dṛṣṭvā tāmaśuciṃ śakraḥ pādataḥ kṛtamūrdhajām ,
śiraḥsthāne kṛtau pādau jahāsa ca mumoda ca.
16. dṛṣṭvā tām aśucim śakraḥ pādataḥ kṛtamūrdhajām
śiraḥsthāne kṛtau pādau jahāsa ca mumoda ca
16. śakraḥ,
tām aśucim pādataḥ kṛtamūrdhajām (ca) śiraḥsthāne kṛtau pādau (ca) dṛṣṭvā,
jahāsa ca mumoda ca.
16. Seeing her (Diti) impure (aśuci), with her hair at her feet and her feet placed where her head should be, Indra laughed and rejoiced.
तस्याः शरीरविवरं विवेश च पुरंदरः ।
गर्भं च सप्तधा राम बिभेद परमात्मवान् ॥१७॥
17. tasyāḥ śarīravivaraṃ viveśa ca puraṃdaraḥ ,
garbhaṃ ca saptadhā rāma bibheda paramātmavān.
17. tasyāḥ śarīravivaram viveśa ca purandaraḥ
garbham ca saptadhā rāma bibheda paramātmavān
17. purandaraḥ paramātmavān tasyāḥ śarīravivaram
ca viveśa ca rāma garbham saptadhā bibheda
17. And Purandara (Indra) entered her body, and O Rāma, that mighty one (Indra) split the fetus into seven parts.
बिध्यमानस्ततो गर्भो वज्रेण शतपर्वणा ।
रुरोद सुस्वरं राम ततो दितिरबुध्यत ॥१८॥
18. bidhyamānastato garbho vajreṇa śataparvaṇā ,
ruroda susvaraṃ rāma tato ditirabudhyata.
18. bidhyamānaḥ tataḥ garbhaḥ vajreṇa śataparvaṇā
ruroda susvaram rāma tataḥ ditiḥ abudhyata
18. rāma tataḥ śataparvaṇā vajreṇa bidhyamānaḥ
garbhaḥ susvaram ruroda tataḥ ditiḥ abudhyata
18. Then, O Rāma, the fetus, being pierced by the hundred-edged thunderbolt, cried out loudly, and thereupon Diti awoke.
मा रुदो मा रुदश्चेति गर्भं शक्रो ऽभ्यभाषत ।
बिभेद च महातेजा रुदन्तमपि वासवः ॥१९॥
19. mā rudo mā rudaśceti garbhaṃ śakro'bhyabhāṣata ,
bibheda ca mahātejā rudantamapi vāsavaḥ.
19. mā rudaḥ mā rudaḥ ca iti garbham śakraḥ abhyabhāṣata
bibheda ca mahātejāḥ rudantam api vāsavaḥ
19. śakraḥ abhyabhāṣata iti mā rudaḥ mā rudaḥ ca
garbham vāsavaḥ mahātejāḥ ca rudantam api bibheda
19. "Do not cry, do not cry!" - thus Śakra (Indra) addressed the fetus. Yet, the greatly powerful Vāsava (Indra) continued to split it, even as it cried.
न हन्तव्यो न हन्तव्य इत्येवं दितिरब्रवीत् ।
निष्पपात ततः शक्रो मातुर्वचनगौरवात् ॥२०॥
20. na hantavyo na hantavya ityevaṃ ditirabravīt ,
niṣpapāta tataḥ śakro māturvacanagauravāt.
20. na hantavyaḥ na hantavyaḥ iti evam ditiḥ abravīt
niṣpapāta tataḥ śakraḥ mātuḥ vacanagauravāt
20. ditiḥ evam iti na hantavyaḥ na hantavyaḥ abravīt
tataḥ śakraḥ mātuḥ vacanagauravāt niṣpapāta
20. "Do not kill! Do not kill!" - thus Diti spoke. Thereupon, Śakra (Indra) flew out, out of deference to his mother's command.
प्राञ्जलिर्वज्रसहितो दितिं शक्रो ऽभ्यभाषत ।
अशुचिर्देवि सुप्तासि पादयोः कृतमूर्धजा ॥२१॥
21. prāñjalirvajrasahito ditiṃ śakro'bhyabhāṣata ,
aśucirdevi suptāsi pādayoḥ kṛtamūrdhajā.
21. prāñjaliḥ vajrasahitaḥ ditim śakraḥ abhyabhāṣata
aśuciḥ devi suptā asi pādayoḥ kṛtamūrdhajā
21. śakraḥ vajrasahitaḥ prāñjaliḥ ditim abhyabhāṣata
devi aśuciḥ suptā asi pādayoḥ kṛtamūrdhajā
21. With folded hands, holding his thunderbolt, Indra (Śakra) spoke to Diti: "O goddess, you are sleeping in an impure state, with your head placed upon your feet."
तदन्तरमहं लब्ध्वा शक्रहन्तारमाहवे ।
अभिन्दं सप्तधा देवि तन्मे त्वं क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥२२॥
22. tadantaramahaṃ labdhvā śakrahantāramāhave ,
abhindaṃ saptadhā devi tanme tvaṃ kṣantumarhasi.
22. tat antaram aham labdhvā śakrahantāram āhave
abhindam saptadhā devi tat me tvam kṣantum arhasi
22. devi aham tat antaram labdhvā āhave śakrahantāram
saptadhā abhindam tvam tat me kṣantum arhasi
22. O goddess, having found that opportune moment, I split the slayer of Indra (Śakra) in battle into seven parts. You should forgive that action of mine.
