विलपन्तीं तथा तां तु कौसल्यां प्रमदोत्तमाम् ।
इदं धर्मे स्थिता धर्म्यं सुमित्रा वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vilapantīṃ tathā tāṃ tu kausalyāṃ pramadottamām ,

1. Then, to that lamenting Kausalya, the foremost among women, Sumitra, who was established in (dharma), spoke these appropriate (dharmya) words.
तवार्ये सद्गुणैर्युक्तः पुत्रः स पुरुषोत्तमः ।
किं ते विलपितेनैवं कृपणं रुदितेन वा ॥२॥
2. tavārye sadguṇairyuktaḥ putraḥ sa puruṣottamaḥ ,
kiṃ te vilapitenaivaṃ kṛpaṇaṃ ruditena vā.
2. tava ārye sadguṇaiḥ yuktaḥ putraḥ saḥ puruṣottamaḥ
kim te vilapitena evam kṛpaṇam ruditena vā

2. O noble lady, your son, endowed with excellent qualities, is the best among men. What is the point of you lamenting or crying so piteously?
यस्तवार्ये गतः पुत्रस्त्यक्त्वा राज्यं महाबलः ।
साधु कुर्वन्महात्मानं पितरं सत्यवादिनाम् ॥३॥
3. yastavārye gataḥ putrastyaktvā rājyaṃ mahābalaḥ ,
sādhu kurvanmahātmānaṃ pitaraṃ satyavādinām.
3. yaḥ tava ārye gataḥ putraḥ tyaktvā rājyam mahābalaḥ
sādhu kurvan mahātmānam pitaram satyavādinām
3. ārye tava mahābalaḥ putraḥ yaḥ rājyam tyaktvā

3. O noble lady, your mighty son, who has departed after abandoning the kingdom, is acting virtuously, thereby establishing his great-souled (mahātman) father among the truth-speakers.
शिष्टैराचरिते सम्यक् शश्वत् प्रेत्य फलोदये ।
रामो धर्मे स्थितः श्रेष्ठो न स शोच्यः कदा चन ॥४॥
4. śiṣṭairācarite samyak śaśvat pretya phalodaye ,
rāmo dharme sthitaḥ śreṣṭho na sa śocyaḥ kadā cana.
4. śiṣṭaiḥ ācarite samyak śaśvat pretya phala udaye
rāmaḥ dharme sthitaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ na saḥ śocyaḥ kadā cana
4. rāmaḥ dharme sthitaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ saḥ śiṣṭaiḥ samyak
ācarite śaśvat pretya phala udaye na kadā cana śocyaḥ
4. Rama, who is established in his intrinsic nature (dharma), is the most excellent. He should never be grieved for, as he follows the path properly practiced by the wise, which always yields beneficial results in the hereafter.
वर्तते चोत्तमां वृत्तिं लक्ष्मणो ऽस्मिन् सदानघः ।
दयावान् सर्वभूतेषु लाभस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥५॥
5. vartate cottamāṃ vṛttiṃ lakṣmaṇo'smin sadānaghaḥ ,
dayāvān sarvabhūteṣu lābhastasya mahātmanaḥ.
5. vartate ca uttamām vṛttim lakṣmaṇaḥ asmin sadā
anaghaḥ dayāvān sarvabhūteṣu lābhaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
5. ca anaghaḥ dayāvān sarvabhūteṣu lakṣmaṇaḥ asmin
sadā uttamām vṛttim vartate tasya mahātmanaḥ lābhaḥ
5. And blameless Lakshmana, always compassionate towards all beings, maintains the most excellent conduct in this (path). This is the great gain for that great-souled (mahātman) one.
अरण्यवासे यद्दुःखं जानती वै सुखोचिता ।
अनुगच्छति वैदेही धर्मात्मानं तवात्मजम् ॥६॥
6. araṇyavāse yadduḥkhaṃ jānatī vai sukhocitā ,
anugacchati vaidehī dharmātmānaṃ tavātmajam.
6. araṇyavāse yat duḥkham jānantī vai sukhochitā
anugacchati vaidehī dharmātmānam tava ātmajam
6. vaidehī sukhochitā araṇyavāse yat duḥkham
jānantī vai tava dharmātmānam ātmajam anugacchati
6. Though accustomed to comfort, Vaidehi (Sita), knowing the hardship of forest life, nonetheless follows your son, whose essence is righteousness (dharma).
कीर्तिभूतां पताकां यो लोके भ्रामयति प्रभुः ।
दमसत्यव्रतपरः किं न प्राप्तस्तवात्मजः ॥७॥
7. kīrtibhūtāṃ patākāṃ yo loke bhrāmayati prabhuḥ ,
damasatyavrataparaḥ kiṃ na prāptastavātmajaḥ.
7. kīrtibhūtām patākām yaḥ loke bhrāmayati prabhuḥ
damasatyavrataparaḥ kim na prāptaḥ tava ātmajaḥ
7. tava ātmajaḥ yaḥ prabhuḥ loke kīrtibhūtām patākām
bhrāmayati damasatyavrataparaḥ kim na prāptaḥ
7. Your son, who, as a capable leader, waves the banner of renown throughout the world, and is dedicated to self-control and truthfulness – what has he not achieved?
व्यक्तं रामस्य विज्ञाय शौचं माहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ।
न गात्रमंशुभिः सूर्यः संतापयितुमर्हति ॥८॥
8. vyaktaṃ rāmasya vijñāya śaucaṃ māhātmyamuttamam ,
na gātramaṃśubhiḥ sūryaḥ saṃtāpayitumarhati.
8. vyaktam rāmasya vijñāya śaucam māhātmyam uttamam
na gātram aṃśubhiḥ sūryaḥ saṃtāpayitum arhati
8. sūryaḥ vyaktam rāmasya śaucam uttamam māhātmyam
vijñāya aṃśubhiḥ gātram saṃtāpayitum na arhati
8. Clearly understanding Rama's evident purity and supreme greatness, the Sun is unable to torment his body with its rays.
शिवः सर्वेषु कालेषु काननेभ्यो विनिःसृतः ।
राघवं युक्तशीतोष्णः सेविष्यति सुखो ऽनिलः ॥९॥
9. śivaḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu kānanebhyo viniḥsṛtaḥ ,
rāghavaṃ yuktaśītoṣṇaḥ seviṣyati sukho'nilaḥ.
9. śivaḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu kānanebhyaḥ viniḥsṛtaḥ
rāghavam yuktaśītoṣṇaḥ seviṣyati sukhaḥ anilaḥ
9. śivaḥ sukhaḥ yuktaśītoṣṇaḥ anilaḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu
kānanebhyaḥ viniḥsṛtaḥ rāghavam seviṣyati
9. An auspicious and pleasant wind, emerging from all the forests at all times, with a balanced temperature (neither too cold nor too hot), will serve Rāghava (Rama).
शयानमनघं रात्रौ पितेवाभिपरिष्वजन् ।
रश्मिभिः संस्पृशञ् शीतैश्चन्द्रमा ह्लादयिष्यति ॥१०॥
10. śayānamanaghaṃ rātrau pitevābhipariṣvajan ,
raśmibhiḥ saṃspṛśañ śītaiścandramā hlādayiṣyati.
10. śayānam anagham rātrau pitā iva abhipariṣvajan
raśmibhiḥ saṃspṛśan śītaiḥ candramāḥ hlādayiṣyati
10. candramāḥ pitā iva abhipariṣvajan śītaiḥ raśmibhiḥ
saṃspṛśan anagham śayānam rātrau hlādayiṣyati
10. The moon, embracing him like a father and touching him with its cool rays, will delight the innocent one sleeping at night.
ददौ चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि यस्मै ब्रह्मा महौजसे ।
दानवेन्द्रं हतं दृष्ट्वा तिमिध्वजसुतं रणे ॥११॥
11. dadau cāstrāṇi divyāni yasmai brahmā mahaujase ,
dānavendraṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā timidhvajasutaṃ raṇe.
11. dadau ca astrāṇi divyāni yasmai brahmā mahaujase
dānavendram hatam dṛṣṭvā timidhvajasutam raṇe
11. brahmā ca yasmai mahaujase divyāni astrāṇi dadau
dānavendram timidhvajasutam raṇe hatam dṛṣṭvā
11. And Brahma gave divine weapons to that greatly powerful one, after he saw the lord of demons, the son of Timidhvaja, slain in battle.
पृथिव्या सह वैदेह्या श्रिया च पुरुषर्षभः ।
क्षिप्रं तिसृभिरेताभिः सह रामो ऽभिषेक्ष्यते ॥१२॥
12. pṛthivyā saha vaidehyā śriyā ca puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
kṣipraṃ tisṛbhiretābhiḥ saha rāmo'bhiṣekṣyate.
12. pṛthivyā saha vaidehyā śriyā ca puruṣarṣabhaḥ
kṣipram tisṛbhiḥ etābhiḥ saha rāmaḥ abhiṣekṣyate
12. puruṣarṣabhaḥ rāmaḥ kṣipram etābhiḥ tisṛbhiḥ
pṛthivyā ca vaidehyā ca śriyā ca saha abhiṣekṣyate
12. Rama, the foremost among men (puruṣarṣabha), will soon be consecrated with these three: Pṛthivī, Vaidehī, and Śrī.
दुःखजं विसृजन्त्यस्रं निष्क्रामन्तमुदीक्ष्य यम् ।
समुत्स्रक्ष्यसि नेत्राभ्यां क्षिप्रमानन्दजं पयः ॥१३॥
13. duḥkhajaṃ visṛjantyasraṃ niṣkrāmantamudīkṣya yam ,
samutsrakṣyasi netrābhyāṃ kṣipramānandajaṃ payaḥ.
13. duḥkhajam visṛjanti asram niṣkrāmantam udīkṣya yam
samutsrakṣyasi netrābhyām kṣipram ānandajam payaḥ
13. yam niṣkrāmantam udīkṣya duḥkhajam asram visṛjanti
netrābhyām kṣipram ānandajam payaḥ samutsrakṣyasi
13. On seeing whom departing, people shed tears born of sorrow. But you, from your eyes, will quickly shed tears born of joy.
अभिवादयमानं तं दृष्ट्वा ससुहृदं सुतम् ।
मुदाश्रु मोक्ष्यसे क्षिप्रं मेघलेकेव वार्षिकी ॥१४॥
14. abhivādayamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā sasuhṛdaṃ sutam ,
mudāśru mokṣyase kṣipraṃ meghalekeva vārṣikī.
14. abhivādayamānam tam dṛṣṭvā sasuhṛdam sutam mudā
aśru mokṣyase kṣipram meghālekhā iva vārṣikī
14. kṣipram mudā aśru mokṣyase tam sutam sasuhṛdam
abhivādayamānam dṛṣṭvā vārṣikī meghālekhā iva
14. Upon seeing your son, accompanied by his friends, paying his respects, you will quickly shed tears of joy, just like a line of clouds in the rainy season.
पुत्रस्ते वरदः क्षिप्रमयोध्यां पुनरागतः ।
कराभ्यां मृदुपीनाभ्यां चरणौ पीडयिष्यति ॥१५॥
15. putraste varadaḥ kṣipramayodhyāṃ punarāgataḥ ,
karābhyāṃ mṛdupīnābhyāṃ caraṇau pīḍayiṣyati.
15. putraḥ te varadaḥ kṣipram ayodhyām punar āgataḥ
karābhyām mṛdupīnābhyām caraṇau pīḍayiṣyati
15. te varadaḥ putraḥ kṣipram ayodhyām punar āgataḥ
mṛdupīnābhyām karābhyām caraṇau pīḍayiṣyati
15. Your benevolent son, having swiftly returned to Ayodhya, will press your feet with his soft and plump hands.
निशम्य तल् लक्ष्मणमातृवाक्यं रामस्य मातुर्नरदेवपत्न्याः ।
सद्यः शरीरे विननाश शोकः शरद्गतो मेघ इवाल्पतोयः ॥१६॥
16. niśamya tal lakṣmaṇamātṛvākyaṃ rāmasya māturnaradevapatnyāḥ ,
sadyaḥ śarīre vinanāśa śokaḥ śaradgato megha ivālpatoyaḥ.
16. niśamya tat lakṣmaṇamātṛvākyaṃ
rāmasya mātuḥ naradevapatnyāḥ
sadyaḥ śarīre vinanāśa śokaḥ
śaradgataḥ meghaḥ iva alpatoyaḥ
16. śokaḥ rāmasya mātuḥ naradevapatnyāḥ
tat lakṣmaṇamātṛvākyaṃ
niśamya sadyaḥ śarīre vinanāśa
śaradgataḥ alpatoyaḥ meghaḥ iva
16. Upon hearing those words from Lakshmana's mother, who was also Rama's mother and the king's wife, sorrow immediately vanished from her body, just like an autumnal cloud with little water.
