स मुहूर्तादुपश्रुत्य देवर्षिरमितप्रभः ।
स्वमाश्रमं शिष्य वृतः क्षुधार्तः संन्यवर्तत ॥१॥
1. sa muhūrtādupaśrutya devarṣiramitaprabhaḥ ,
svamāśramaṃ śiṣya vṛtaḥ kṣudhārtaḥ saṃnyavartata.

1. After a short while, the divine sage (devarṣi) of immeasurable splendor, having heard what happened, returned to his own hermitage (āśrama), surrounded by his disciples and afflicted by hunger.
सो ऽपश्यदरजां दीनां रजसा समभिप्लुताम् ।
ज्योत्स्नामिवारुणग्रस्तां प्रत्यूषे न विराजतीम् ॥२॥
2. so'paśyadarajāṃ dīnāṃ rajasā samabhiplutām ,
jyotsnāmivāruṇagrastāṃ pratyūṣe na virājatīm.
2. saḥ apaśyat arajām dīnām rajasā samabhiplutām
jyotsnām iva aruṇagrastām pratyūṣe na virājatīm
2. saḥ dīnām rajasā samabhiplutām arajām,

2. He saw Arajā, wretched and covered in dust, resembling moonlight seized by Aruṇa (the dawn) and not shining in the early morning.
तस्य रोषः समभवत् क्षुधार्तस्य विशेषतः ।
निर्दहन्निव लोकांस्त्रीञ् शिष्यांश्चेदमुवाच ह ॥३॥
3. tasya roṣaḥ samabhavat kṣudhārtasya viśeṣataḥ ,
nirdahanniva lokāṃstrīñ śiṣyāṃścedamuvāca ha.
3. tasya roṣaḥ samabhavat kṣudhārtasya viśeṣataḥ
nirdahan iva lokān trīn śiṣyān ca idam uvāca ha
3. kṣudhārtasya viśeṣataḥ tasya roṣaḥ samabhavat

3. His anger arose, especially as he was tormented by hunger. As if scorching the three worlds, he spoke this to his disciples.
पश्यध्वं विपरीतस्य दण्डस्याविदितात्मनः ।
विपत्तिं घोरसंकाशां क्रुद्धामग्निशिखामिव ॥४॥
4. paśyadhvaṃ viparītasya daṇḍasyāviditātmanaḥ ,
vipattiṃ ghorasaṃkāśāṃ kruddhāmagniśikhāmiva.
4. paśyadhvam viparītasya daṇḍasya aviditātmanaḥ
vipattim ghorasaṃkāśām kruddhām agniśikhām iva
4. viparītasya daṇḍasya aviditātmanaḥ ghorasaṃkāśām

4. Behold the terrible calamity, raging like a flame of fire, that awaits the perverse one who is ignorant of his true self (ātman).
क्षयो ऽस्य दुर्मतेः प्राप्तः सानुगस्य दुरात्मनः ।
यः प्रदीप्तां हुताशस्य शिखां वै स्प्रष्टुमिच्छति ॥५॥
5. kṣayo'sya durmateḥ prāptaḥ sānugasya durātmanaḥ ,
yaḥ pradīptāṃ hutāśasya śikhāṃ vai spraṣṭumicchati.
5. kṣayaḥ asya durmateḥ prāptaḥ sa-anugasya durātmanaḥ
yaḥ pradīptām hutāśasya śikhām vai spraṣṭum icchati
5. asya durmateḥ sa-anugasya durātmanaḥ kṣayaḥ prāptaḥ
yaḥ pradīptām hutāśasya śikhām spraṣṭum icchati vai
5. The ruin of this evil-minded, wicked person, along with his followers, has arrived (is imminent). Such is the fate of he who indeed desires to touch the blazing flame of the fire.
यस्मात् स कृतवान्पापमीदृशं घोरदर्शनम् ।
तस्मात् प्राप्स्यति दुर्मेधाः फलं पापस्य कर्मणः ॥६॥
6. yasmāt sa kṛtavānpāpamīdṛśaṃ ghoradarśanam ,
tasmāt prāpsyati durmedhāḥ phalaṃ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ.
6. yasmāt saḥ kṛtavān pāpam īdṛśam ghoradarśanam
tasmāt prāpsyati durmedhāḥ phalam pāpasya karmaṇaḥ
6. yasmāt saḥ īdṛśam ghoradarśanam pāpam kṛtavān
tasmāt durmedhāḥ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalam prāpsyati
6. Since he has committed such a dreadful sin, therefore the foolish one will receive the consequence (phalam) of his evil action (karma).
सप्तरात्रेण राजासौ सभृत्यबलवाहनः ।
पापकर्मसमाचारो वधं प्राप्स्यति दुर्मतिः ॥७॥
7. saptarātreṇa rājāsau sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ ,
pāpakarmasamācāro vadhaṃ prāpsyati durmatiḥ.
7. sapta-rātreṇa rājā asau sa-bhṛtya-bala-vāhanaḥ
pāpa-karma-samācāraḥ vadham prāpsyati dur-matiḥ
7. Within seven nights, that king, along with his servants, army, and vehicles, whose conduct involves sinful acts (pāpa-karma), will meet his demise, being of wicked intellect (durmatiḥ).
समन्ताद् योजनशतं विषयं चास्य दुर्मतेः ।
धक्ष्यते पांसुवर्षेण महता पाकशासनः ॥८॥
8. samantād yojanaśataṃ viṣayaṃ cāsya durmateḥ ,
dhakṣyate pāṃsuvarṣeṇa mahatā pākaśāsanaḥ.
8. samantāt yojanam śatam viṣayam ca asya dur-mateḥ
dhakṣyate pāṃsu-varṣeṇa mahatā pāka-śāsanaḥ
8. And a hundred leagues (yojana) of the dominion of that wicked-minded one (durmatiḥ) all around will be scorched by a great rain of dust (pāṃsu-varṣa) by Indra (pāka-śāsanaḥ).
सर्वसत्त्वानि यानीह स्थावराणि चराणि च ।
महता पांसुवर्षेण नाशं यास्यन्ति सर्वशः ॥९॥
9. sarvasattvāni yānīha sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ,
mahatā pāṃsuvarṣeṇa nāśaṃ yāsyanti sarvaśaḥ.
9. sarva-sattvāni yāni iha sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca
mahatā pāṃsu-varṣeṇa nāśam yāsyanti sarvaśaḥ
9. All living beings that are here, both stationary and moving, will utterly perish due to the great rain of dust (pāṃsu-varṣa).
दण्डस्य विषयो यावत्तावत् सर्वसमुच्छ्रयः ।
पांसुभुत इवालक्ष्यः सप्तरात्राद्भविष्यति ॥१०॥
10. daṇḍasya viṣayo yāvattāvat sarvasamucchrayaḥ ,
pāṃsubhuta ivālakṣyaḥ saptarātrādbhaviṣyati.
10. daṇḍasya viṣayaḥ yāvat tāvat sarva-samucchrayaḥ
pāṃsu-bhūtaḥ iva alakṣyaḥ sapta-rātrāt bhaviṣyati
10. As far as the king's dominion (daṇḍa) extends, all elevated structures will become indistinguishable, as if turned to dust, within seven nights (sapta-rātra).
इत्युक्त्वा क्रोधसंतपस्तमाश्रमनिवासिनम् ।
जनं जनपदान्तेषु स्थीयतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. ityuktvā krodhasaṃtapastamāśramanivāsinam ,
janaṃ janapadānteṣu sthīyatāmiti cābravīt.
11. iti uktvā krodha-saṃtapaḥ tam āśrama-nivāsinam
janam janapada-anteṣu sthīyatām iti ca abravīt
11. iti uktvā krodha-saṃtapaḥ tam āśrama-nivāsinam
janam janapada-anteṣu sthīyatām iti ca abravīt
11. Having said this, burning with anger, he told the person dwelling in that hermitage, 'Let it be stayed in the outskirts of the country!'
श्रुत्वा तूशसनो वाक्यं स आश्रमावसथो जनः ।
निष्क्रान्तो विषयात्तस्य स्थानं चक्रे ऽथ बाह्यतः ॥१२॥
12. śrutvā tūśasano vākyaṃ sa āśramāvasatho janaḥ ,
niṣkrānto viṣayāttasya sthānaṃ cakre'tha bāhyataḥ.
12. śrutvā tu uśasanaḥ vākyam saḥ āśrama-avasathaḥ janaḥ
niṣkrāntaḥ viṣayāt tasya sthānam cakre atha bāhyataḥ
12. tu uśasanaḥ saḥ āśrama-avasathaḥ janaḥ vākyam śrutvā
tasya viṣayāt niṣkrāntaḥ atha bāhyataḥ sthānam cakre
12. But Uśasana, that person dwelling in the hermitage, having heard the words, departed from his domain and then made his abode outside.
स तथोक्त्वा मुनिजनमरजामिदमब्रवीत् ।
इहैव वस दुर्मेधे आश्रमे सुसमाहिता ॥१३॥
13. sa tathoktvā munijanamarajāmidamabravīt ,
ihaiva vasa durmedhe āśrame susamāhitā.
13. saḥ tathā uktvā muni-janam arajām idam abravīt
iha eva vasa durmedhe āśrame su-samāhitā
13. saḥ muni-janam tathā uktvā idam arajām abravīt
durmedhe su-samāhitā iha eva āśrame vasa
13. Having thus spoken to the assembly of sages, he said this to Arajā: 'O you of dull intellect, live right here in the hermitage, completely composed.'
इदं योजनपर्यन्तं सरः सुरुचिरप्रभम् ।
अरजे विज्वरा भुङ्क्ष्व कालश्चात्र प्रतीक्ष्यताम् ॥१४॥
14. idaṃ yojanaparyantaṃ saraḥ suruciraprabham ,
araje vijvarā bhuṅkṣva kālaścātra pratīkṣyatām.
14. idam yojanaparyantam saraḥ su-rucira-prabham
araje vijvarā bhuṅkṣva kālaḥ ca atra pratīkṣyatām
14. araje vijvarā idam yojana-paryantam su-rucira-prabham
saraḥ bhuṅkṣva ca atra kālaḥ pratīkṣyatām
14. O Arajā, being free from distress, enjoy this lake, which extends for a (yojana) and possesses a beautiful radiance, and let time be awaited here.
त्वत्समीपे तु ये सत्त्वा वासमेष्यन्ति तां निशाम् ।
अवध्याः पांसुवर्षेण ते भविष्यन्ति नित्यदा ॥१५॥
15. tvatsamīpe tu ye sattvā vāsameṣyanti tāṃ niśām ,
avadhyāḥ pāṃsuvarṣeṇa te bhaviṣyanti nityadā.
15. tvatsamīpe tu ye sattvāḥ vāsam eṣyanti tām niśām
avadhyāḥ pāṃsuvarṣeṇa te bhaviṣyanti nityadā
15. Indeed, those beings who will take shelter near you during that night will always be immune to harm from the dust-storm.
इत्युक्त्वा भार्गवो वासमन्यत्र समुपाक्रमत् ।
सप्ताहाद्भस्मसाद्भूतं यथोक्तं ब्रह्मवादिना ॥१६॥
16. ityuktvā bhārgavo vāsamanyatra samupākramat ,
saptāhādbhasmasādbhūtaṃ yathoktaṃ brahmavādinā.
16. iti uktvā bhārgavaḥ vāsam anyatra sam upa ākramat
saptāhāt bhasmasāt bhūtam yathā uktam brahmavādinā
16. Having spoken thus, Bhargava (Paraśurāma) departed to reside elsewhere. Within seven days, it was reduced to ashes, just as the knower of sacred texts (brahmavādin) had predicted.
तस्यासौ दण्डविषयो विन्ध्यशैवलसानुषु ।
शप्तो ब्रह्मर्षिणा तेन पुरा वैधर्मके कृते ॥१७॥
17. tasyāsau daṇḍaviṣayo vindhyaśaivalasānuṣu ,
śapto brahmarṣiṇā tena purā vaidharmake kṛte.
17. tasya asau daṇḍaviṣayaḥ vindhyaśaivalasānuṣu
śaptaḥ brahmarṣiṇā tena purā vaidharmake kṛte
17. This region of Daṇḍaka, encompassing the slopes of the Vindhya and Śaivala mountains, was cursed by that brahmin sage (brahmarṣi) long ago, when an act contrary to natural law (dharma) was committed.
ततः प्रभृति काकुत्स्थ दण्डकारण्यमुच्यते ।
तपस्विनः स्थिता यत्र जनस्थानमथो ऽभवत् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ prabhṛti kākutstha daṇḍakāraṇyamucyate ,
tapasvinaḥ sthitā yatra janasthānamatho'bhavat.
18. tataḥ prabhṛti kākutstha daṇḍakāraṇyam ucyate
tapasvinaḥ sthitāḥ yatra janasthānam atha u abhavat
18. From then on, O Rāma (Kākutstha), it has been called the Daṇḍaka forest. Furthermore, the place where ascetics (tapasvin) resided became known as Janasthāna.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां पृच्छसि राघव ।
संध्यामुपासितुं वीर समयो ह्यतिवर्तते ॥१९॥
19. etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ yanmāṃ pṛcchasi rāghava ,
saṃdhyāmupāsituṃ vīra samayo hyativartate.
19. etat te sarvam ākhyātam yat mām pṛcchasi rāghava
sandhyām upāsitum vīra samayaḥ hi ativartate
19. O Rāghava, all that you asked me has been explained to you. O hero, the time for the twilight ritual is indeed passing.
एते महर्षयः सर्वे पूर्णकुम्भाः समन्ततः ।
कृतोदको नरव्याघ्र आदित्यं पर्युपासते ॥२०॥
20. ete maharṣayaḥ sarve pūrṇakumbhāḥ samantataḥ ,
kṛtodako naravyāghra ādityaṃ paryupāsate.
20. ete maharṣayaḥ sarve pūrṇakumbhāḥ samantataḥ
kṛtodakaḥ naravyāghra ādityam paryupāsate
20. O tiger among men, all these great sages, having performed the water ritual and with full water pots all around, are worshipping the Sun god.
स तैरृषिभिरभ्यस्तः सहितैर्ब्रह्मसत्तमैः ।
रविरस्तं गतो राम गच्छोदकमुपस्पृश ॥२१॥
21. sa tairṛṣibhirabhyastaḥ sahitairbrahmasattamaiḥ ,
ravirastaṃ gato rāma gacchodakamupaspṛśa.
21. sa taiḥ ṛṣibhiḥ abhyastaḥ sahitaiḥ brahmasattamaiḥ
raviḥ astam gataḥ rāma gaccha udakam upaspṛśa
21. O Rāma, the Sun, attended by those sages and accompanied by the best of brahmins, has set. Go and perform the water ritual.
