एतच्च वचनं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवेण सुभाषितम् ।
प्रत्ययार्थं महातेजा रामो जग्राह कार्मुकम् ॥१॥

1. Having heard this well-spoken statement by Sugrīva, the highly radiant Rāma took up his bow to instill conviction.
स गृहीत्वा धनुर्घोरं शरमेकं च मानदः ।
सालानुद्दिश्य चिक्षेप ज्यास्वनैः पूरयन्दिशः ॥२॥
2. sa gṛhītvā dhanurghoraṃ śaramekaṃ ca mānadaḥ ,
sālānuddiśya cikṣepa jyāsvanaiḥ pūrayandiśaḥ.

2. He, the bestower of honor, having grasped the mighty bow and a single arrow, aimed at the śāla trees and shot, filling all directions with the resonant twangs of his bowstring.
स विसृष्टो बलवता बाणः स्वर्णपरिष्कृतः ।
भित्त्वा सालान् गिरिप्रस्थे सप्त भूमिं विवेश ह ॥३॥
3. sa visṛṣṭo balavatā bāṇaḥ svarṇapariṣkṛtaḥ ,
bhittvā sālān giriprasthe sapta bhūmiṃ viveśa ha.

3. That gold-adorned arrow, discharged by the powerful Rāma, having pierced the seven śāla trees on the mountain plateau, indeed entered the earth.
प्रविष्टस्तु मुहूर्तेन रसां भित्त्वा महाजवः ।
निष्पत्य च पुनस्तूर्णं स्वतूणीं प्रविवेश ह ॥४॥
4. praviṣṭastu muhūrtena rasāṃ bhittvā mahājavaḥ ,
niṣpatya ca punastūrṇaṃ svatūṇīṃ praviveśa ha.

niṣpatya ca punar tūrṇam svatūṇīm praviveśa ha

4. That arrow, possessing immense speed, pierced the earth (rasā) in an instant, and having emerged, swiftly re-entered its own quiver.
तान्दृष्ट्वा सप्त निर्भिन्नान् सालान् वानरपुंगवः ।
रामस्य शरवेगेन विस्मयं परमं गतः ॥५॥
5. tāndṛṣṭvā sapta nirbhinnān sālān vānarapuṃgavaḥ ,
rāmasya śaravegena vismayaṃ paramaṃ gataḥ.

5. Having witnessed those seven Sāla trees pierced by the force of Rama's arrow, Sugriva, the chief of monkeys, was filled with immense astonishment.
स मूर्ध्ना न्यपतद्भूमौ प्रलम्बीकृतभूषणः ।
सुग्रीवः परमप्रीतो राघवाय कृताञ्जलिः ॥६॥
6. sa mūrdhnā nyapatadbhūmau pralambīkṛtabhūṣaṇaḥ ,
sugrīvaḥ paramaprīto rāghavāya kṛtāñjaliḥ.

6. Sugriva, greatly pleased, fell to the ground with his head bowed, his ornaments hanging loose, and with folded hands (kṛtāñjaliḥ) before Rama (Rāghava).
इदं चोवाच धर्मज्ञं कर्मणा तेन हर्षितः ।
रामं सर्वास्त्रविदुषां श्रेष्ठं शूरमवस्थितम् ॥७॥
7. idaṃ covāca dharmajñaṃ karmaṇā tena harṣitaḥ ,
rāmaṃ sarvāstraviduṣāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ śūramavasthitam.
7. idam ca uvāca dharmajñam karmaṇā tena harṣitaḥ
rāmam sarvāstraviduṣām śreṣṭham śūram avasthitam
7. tena karmaṇā harṣitaḥ (Sugrīvaḥ) sarvāstraviduṣām

7. And, delighted by that action (karma), he said this to Rama, who knows natural law (dharma), is the foremost among all experts in weaponry, valiant, and steadfast.
सेन्द्रानपि सुरान् सर्वांस्त्वं बाणैः पुरुषर्षभ ।
समर्थः समरे हन्तुं किं पुनर्वालिनं प्रभो ॥८॥
8. sendrānapi surān sarvāṃstvaṃ bāṇaiḥ puruṣarṣabha ,
samarthaḥ samare hantuṃ kiṃ punarvālinaṃ prabho.
8. seindrān api surān sarvān tvam bāṇaiḥ puruṣarṣabha
samarthaḥ samare hantum kim punaḥ vālinam prabho
8. prabho puruṣarṣabha tvam bāṇaiḥ seindrān api sarvān
surān samare hantum samarthaḥ kim punaḥ vālinam
8. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), O Lord (prabho), you are capable of slaying even all the gods, including Indra, with your arrows in battle. What then to speak of Vāli?
येन सप्त महासाला गिरिर्भूमिश्च दारिताः ।
बाणेनैकेन काकुत्स्थ स्थाता ते को रणाग्रतः ॥९॥
9. yena sapta mahāsālā girirbhūmiśca dāritāḥ ,
bāṇenaikena kākutstha sthātā te ko raṇāgrataḥ.
9. yena sapta mahāsālāḥ giriḥ bhūmiḥ ca dāritāḥ
bāṇena ekena kākutstha sthātā te kaḥ raṇāgrataḥ

9. O scion of Kakutstha (kākutstha), since by you (Rāma) seven great śāla trees, a mountain, and the earth were pierced by a single arrow, who indeed could stand before you at the forefront of battle?
अद्य मे विगतः शोकः प्रीतिरद्य परा मम ।
सुहृदं त्वां समासाद्य महेन्द्रवरुणोपमम् ॥१०॥
10. adya me vigataḥ śokaḥ prītiradya parā mama ,
suhṛdaṃ tvāṃ samāsādya mahendravaruṇopamam.
10. adya me vigataḥ śokaḥ prītiḥ adya parā mama
suhṛdam tvām samāsādya mahendravaruṇopamam
10. mahendravaruṇopamam tvām suhṛdam samāsādya
adya me śokaḥ vigataḥ adya mama prītiḥ parā
10. Today my sorrow has vanished, and my joy is now supreme, having found you as a friend, who are comparable to mighty Indra and Varuṇa.
तमद्यैव प्रियार्थं मे वैरिणं भ्रातृरूपिणम् ।
वालिनं जहि काकुत्स्थ मया बद्धो ऽयमञ्जलिः ॥११॥
11. tamadyaiva priyārthaṃ me vairiṇaṃ bhrātṛrūpiṇam ,
vālinaṃ jahi kākutstha mayā baddho'yamañjaliḥ.
11. tam adya eva priyārtham me vairiṇam bhrātṛrūpiṇam
vālinam jahi kākutstha mayā baddhaḥ ayam añjaliḥ
11. kākutstha me priyārtham bhrātṛrūpiṇam tam vairiṇam
vālinam adya eva jahi ayam añjaliḥ mayā baddhaḥ
11. O scion of Kakutstha (kākutstha), for my benefit, kill Vāli, that enemy who assumes the form of my brother, today itself! I humbly make this gesture with folded hands (añjali).
ततो रामः परिष्वज्य सुग्रीवं प्रियदर्शनम् ।
प्रत्युवाच महाप्राज्ञो लक्ष्मणानुमतं वचः ॥१२॥
12. tato rāmaḥ pariṣvajya sugrīvaṃ priyadarśanam ,
pratyuvāca mahāprājño lakṣmaṇānumataṃ vacaḥ.
12. tataḥ rāmaḥ pariṣvajya sugrīvam priyadarśanam
pratiuvāca mahāprājñaḥ lakṣmaṇānumatam vacaḥ
12. tataḥ mahāprājñaḥ rāmaḥ priyadarśanam sugrīvam

12. Then, the greatly wise Rāma, having embraced Sugrīva of charming appearance, spoke words approved by Lakṣmaṇa.
अस्माद्गच्छाम किष्किन्धां क्षिप्रं गच्छ त्वमग्रतः ।
गत्वा चाह्वय सुग्रीव वालिनं भ्रातृगन्धिनम् ॥१३॥
13. asmādgacchāma kiṣkindhāṃ kṣipraṃ gaccha tvamagrataḥ ,
gatvā cāhvaya sugrīva vālinaṃ bhrātṛgandhinam.
13. asmāt gacchāma kiṣkindhām kṣipram gaccha tvam agrataḥ
gatvā ca āhvaya sugrīva vālinam bhrātṛgandhinam
13. asmāt gacchāma kiṣkindhām tvam kṣipram agrataḥ gaccha
ca gatvā sugrīva vālinam bhrātṛgandhinam āhvaya
13. From here, let us proceed to Kiṣkindhā. You (Sugrīva), go quickly ahead. And once there, Sugrīva, summon Vālin, who is a brother merely in name.
सर्वे ते त्वरितं गत्वा किष्किन्धां वालिनः पुरीम् ।
वृक्षैरात्मानमावृत्य व्यतिष्ठन् गहने वने ॥१४॥
14. sarve te tvaritaṃ gatvā kiṣkindhāṃ vālinaḥ purīm ,
vṛkṣairātmānamāvṛtya vyatiṣṭhan gahane vane.
14. sarve te tvaritam gatvā kiṣkindhām vālinaḥ purīm
vṛkṣaiḥ ātmānam āvṛtya vyatiṣṭhan gahane vane
14. te sarve tvaritam vālinaḥ purīm kiṣkindhām gatvā
vṛkṣaiḥ ātmānam āvṛtya gahane vane vyatiṣṭhan
14. All of them, having quickly reached Kiṣkindhā, the city of Vālin, concealed themselves among the trees and remained in the dense forest.
सुग्रीवो व्यनदद्घोरं वालिनो ह्वानकारणात् ।
गाढं परिहितो वेगान्नादैर्भिन्दन्निवाम्बरम् ॥१५॥
15. sugrīvo vyanadadghoraṃ vālino hvānakāraṇāt ,
gāḍhaṃ parihito vegānnādairbhindannivāmbaram.
15. sugrīvaḥ vi anadat ghoram vālinaḥ hvānakāraṇāt
gāḍham parihitaḥ vegāt nādaiḥ bhindan iva ambaram
15. sugrīvaḥ vālinaḥ hvānakāraṇāt ghoram vi anadat
gāḍham parihitaḥ vegāt nādaiḥ ambaram bhindan iva
15. Sugrīva let out a terrible roar, intending to challenge Vālin. Firmly prepared, he burst forth with impetuous energy, with roars as if tearing the very sky.
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं भ्रातुः क्रुद्धो वाली महाबलः ।
निष्पपात सुसंरब्धो भास्करो ऽस्ततटादिव ॥१६॥
16. taṃ śrutvā ninadaṃ bhrātuḥ kruddho vālī mahābalaḥ ,
niṣpapāta susaṃrabdho bhāskaro'stataṭādiva.
16. tam śrutvā ninadam bhrātuḥ kruddhaḥ vālī mahābalaḥ
niṣpapāta susaṃrabdhaḥ bhāskaraḥ astataṭāt iva
16. bhrātuḥ tam ninadam śrutvā,

16. Hearing that roar of his brother, the immensely powerful Vāli, filled with great fury, burst out, just like the sun emerges from the western horizon.
ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धं वालिसुग्रीवयोरभूत् ।
गगने ग्रहयोर्घोरं बुधाङ्गारकयोरिव ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ sutumulaṃ yuddhaṃ vālisugrīvayorabhūt ,
gagane grahayorghoraṃ budhāṅgārakayoriva.
17. tataḥ sutumulam yuddham vālisugrīvayoḥ abhūt
gagane grahayoḥ ghoram budhāṅgārakayoḥ iva
17. tataḥ vālisugrīvayoḥ sutumulam yuddham abhūt.

17. Thereupon, a very tumultuous battle occurred between Vāli and Sugrīva, resembling a fierce conflict between the planets Mercury and Mars in the sky.
तलैरशनिकल्पैश्च वज्रकल्पैश्च मुष्टिभिः ।
जघ्नतुः समरे ऽन्योन्यं भ्रातरौ क्रोधमूर्छितौ ॥१८॥
18. talairaśanikalpaiśca vajrakalpaiśca muṣṭibhiḥ ,
jaghnatuḥ samare'nyonyaṃ bhrātarau krodhamūrchitau.
18. talaiḥ aśanikalpaiḥ ca vajrakalpaiḥ ca muṣṭibhiḥ
jaghnatuḥ samare anyonyam bhrātarau krodhamūrchitau
18. krodhamūrchitau bhrātarau aśanikalpaiḥ talaiḥ ca
vajrakalpaiḥ muṣṭibhiḥ ca samare anyonyam jaghnatuḥ
18. With palm-strikes resembling thunderbolts and fists like Adamantine weapons, the two brothers, overwhelmed with fury, struck each other in the battle.
ततो रामो धनुष्पाणिस्ताव् उभौ समुदीक्ष्य तु ।
अन्योन्यसदृशौ वीराव् उभौ देवाविवाश्विनौ ॥१९॥
19. tato rāmo dhanuṣpāṇistāv ubhau samudīkṣya tu ,
anyonyasadṛśau vīrāv ubhau devāvivāśvinau.
19. tataḥ rāmaḥ dhanuṣpāṇiḥ tau ubhau samudīkṣya tu
anyonyasadṛśau vīrau ubhau devau iva aśvinau
19. tataḥ dhanuṣpāṇiḥ rāmaḥ anyonyasadṛśau ubhau vīrau,
ubhau aśvinau devau iva tau samudīkṣya tu
19. Then, Rāma, bow in hand, having observed those two heroes who resembled each other, both like the two divine Aśvinikumāras...
यन्नावगच्छत् सुग्रीवं वालिनं वापि राघवः ।
ततो न कृतवान्बुद्धिं मोक्तुमन्तकरं शरम् ॥२०॥
20. yannāvagacchat sugrīvaṃ vālinaṃ vāpi rāghavaḥ ,
tato na kṛtavānbuddhiṃ moktumantakaraṃ śaram.
20. yat na avagacchat sugrīvam vālinam vā api rāghavaḥ
| tataḥ na kṛtavān buddhim moktum antakaram śaram
20. rāghavaḥ yat sugrīvam vā vālinam api na avagacchat
tataḥ antakaram śaram moktum buddhim na kṛtavān
20. Because Rama (rāghavaḥ) did not recognize Sugriva or even Vali, he therefore did not resolve to release the death-dealing arrow.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे भग्नः सुग्रीवस्तेन वालिना ।
अपश्यन् राघवं नाथमृश्यमूकं प्रदुद्रुवे ॥२१॥
21. etasminnantare bhagnaḥ sugrīvastena vālinā ,
apaśyan rāghavaṃ nāthamṛśyamūkaṃ pradudruve.
21. etasmin antare bhagnaḥ sugrīvaḥ tena vālinā |
apaśyan rāghavam nātham ṛśyamūkam pradudruve
21. etasmin antare,
tena vālinā bhagnaḥ sugrīvaḥ,
rāghavam nātham apaśyan,

21. At that moment, Sugriva, defeated by Vali, not seeing Rama (rāghavaḥ) as his protector, fled to Mount Rishyamuka.
क्लान्तो रुधिरसिक्ताङ्गः प्रहारैर्जर्जरीकृतः ।
वालिनाभिद्रुतः क्रोधात् प्रविवेश महावनम् ॥२२॥
22. klānto rudhirasiktāṅgaḥ prahārairjarjarīkṛtaḥ ,
vālinābhidrutaḥ krodhāt praviveśa mahāvanam.
22. klāntaḥ rudhirasiktāṅgaḥ prahāraiḥ jarjarīkṛtaḥ
| vālinā abhidrutaḥ krodhāt praviveśa mahāvanam
22. klāntaḥ,

vālinā krodhāt abhidrutaḥ (Sugrīvaḥ) mahāvanam praviveśa
22. Weary, his limbs soaked with blood, shattered by blows, and pursued by Vali out of rage, he entered the great forest.
तं प्रविष्टं वनं दृष्ट्वा वाली शापभयात्ततः ।
मुक्तो ह्यसि त्वमित्युक्त्वा स निवृत्तो महाबलः ॥२३॥
23. taṃ praviṣṭaṃ vanaṃ dṛṣṭvā vālī śāpabhayāttataḥ ,
mukto hyasi tvamityuktvā sa nivṛtto mahābalaḥ.
23. tam praviṣṭam vanam dṛṣṭvā vālī śāpabhayāt tataḥ |
muktaḥ hi asi tvam iti uktvā saḥ nivṛttaḥ mahābalaḥ
23. vālī tam vanam praviṣṭam dṛṣṭvā,
tatas śāpabhayāt "tvam hi muktaḥ asi" iti uktvā,
saḥ mahābalaḥ nivṛttaḥ (abhūti)
23. Seeing him entered into the forest, Vali, then due to the fear of a curse, saying "Indeed, you are now free," that powerful one returned.
राघवो ऽपि सह भ्रात्रा सह चैव हनूमता ।
तदेव वनमागच्छत् सुग्रीवो यत्र वानरः ॥२४॥
24. rāghavo'pi saha bhrātrā saha caiva hanūmatā ,
tadeva vanamāgacchat sugrīvo yatra vānaraḥ.
24. rāghavaḥ api saha bhrātrā saha ca eva hanūmatā
tat eva vanam āgacchat sugrīvaḥ yatra vānaraḥ
24. rāghavaḥ api bhrātrā saha ca eva hanūmatā saha
yatra vānaraḥ sugrīvaḥ tat eva vanam āgacchat
24. Rāghava (Rāma), along with his brother and indeed with Hanumān, came to that very forest where the monkey Sugrīva was.
तं समीक्ष्यागतं रामं सुग्रीवः सहलक्ष्मणम् ।
ह्रीमान्दीनमुवाचेदं वसुधामवलोकयन् ॥२५॥
25. taṃ samīkṣyāgataṃ rāmaṃ sugrīvaḥ sahalakṣmaṇam ,
hrīmāndīnamuvācedaṃ vasudhāmavalokayan.
25. tam samīkṣya āgatam rāmam sugrīvaḥ sahalakṣmaṇam
hrīmān dīnam uvāca idam vasudhām avalokayan
25. sugrīvaḥ tam sahalakṣmaṇam āgatam rāmam samīkṣya

25. Sugrīva, having seen Rāma arrive with Lakṣmaṇa, looked down at the earth and, feeling ashamed and dejected, spoke this.
आह्वयस्वेति मामुक्त्वा दर्शयित्वा च विक्रमम् ।
वैरिणा घातयित्वा च किमिदानीं त्वया कृतम् ॥२६॥
26. āhvayasveti māmuktvā darśayitvā ca vikramam ,
vairiṇā ghātayitvā ca kimidānīṃ tvayā kṛtam.
26. āhvayasva iti mām uktvā darśayitvā ca vikramam
vairiṇā ghātayitvā ca kim idānīm tvayā kṛtam
26. mām "āhvayasva" iti uktvā ca vikramam darśayitvā
ca vairiṇā ghātayitvā idānīm tvayā kim kṛtam
26. After saying to me, 'Summon me!' and showing your prowess, and then having me slain by my enemy, what exactly have you done now?
तामेव वेलां वक्तव्यं त्वया राघव तत्त्वतः ।
वालिनं न निहन्मीति ततो नाहमितो व्रजे ॥२७॥
27. tāmeva velāṃ vaktavyaṃ tvayā rāghava tattvataḥ ,
vālinaṃ na nihanmīti tato nāhamito vraje.
27. tām eva velām vaktavyam tvayā rāghava tattvataḥ
vālinam na nihanmi iti tataḥ na aham itaḥ vraje
27. rāghava tvayā tām eva velām tattvataḥ "vālinam na
nihanmi" iti vaktavyam (āsīt); tataḥ aham itaḥ na vraje
27. O Rāghava (Rāma), at that very time, you should have truly said, 'I will not kill Vāli'; then I (Sugrīva) would not have gone from here.
तस्य चैवं ब्रुवाणस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ।
करुणं दीनया वाचा राघवः पुनरब्रवीत् ॥२८॥
28. tasya caivaṃ bruvāṇasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ ,
karuṇaṃ dīnayā vācā rāghavaḥ punarabravīt.
28. tasya ca evam bruvāṇasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ
karuṇam dīnayā vācā rāghavaḥ punaḥ abravīt
28. ca evam bruvāṇasya tasya mahātmanaḥ sugrīvasya,
rāghavaḥ dīnayā karuṇam vācā punaḥ abravīt
28. And while the magnanimous Sugriva was speaking thus, Rama (Rāghava) spoke again with a pitiful voice, full of compassion.
सुग्रीव श्रूयतां तातः क्रोधश्च व्यपनीयताम् ।
कारणं येन बाणो ऽयं न मया स विसर्जितः ॥२९॥
29. sugrīva śrūyatāṃ tātaḥ krodhaśca vyapanīyatām ,
kāraṇaṃ yena bāṇo'yaṃ na mayā sa visarjitaḥ.
29. sugrīva śrūyatām tātaḥ krodhaḥ ca vyapanīyatām
kāraṇam yena bāṇaḥ ayam na mayā saḥ visarjitaḥ

29. Sugriva, my dear friend, listen and let your anger (krodha) be dispelled. [I will tell you] the reason why this arrow was not discharged by me.
अलंकारेण वेषेण प्रमाणेन गतेन च ।
त्वं च सुग्रीव वाली च सदृशौ स्थः परस्परम् ॥३०॥
30. alaṃkāreṇa veṣeṇa pramāṇena gatena ca ,
tvaṃ ca sugrīva vālī ca sadṛśau sthaḥ parasparam.

30. By ornamentation, by attire, by stature, and by gait, you, Sugriva, and Vali are similar to each other.
स्वरेण वर्चसा चैव प्रेक्षितेन च वानर ।
विक्रमेण च वाक्यैश्च व्यक्तिं वां नोपलक्षये ॥३१॥
31. svareṇa varcasā caiva prekṣitena ca vānara ,
vikrameṇa ca vākyaiśca vyaktiṃ vāṃ nopalakṣaye.
31. svareṇa varcasā ca eva prekṣitena ca vānara
vikrameṇa ca vākyaiḥ ca vyaktim vām na upalakṣaye
31. vānara svareṇa varcasā ca eva prekṣitena ca
vikrameṇa ca vākyaiḥ ca vām vyaktim na upalakṣaye
31. O Vanara (Sugriva), I perceive no distinction between the two of you, neither by voice, nor by radiance, nor by gaze, nor by prowess, nor by words.
ततो ऽहं रूपसादृश्यान्मोहितो वानरोत्तम ।
नोत्सृजामि महावेगं शरं शत्रुनिबर्हणम् ॥३२॥
32. tato'haṃ rūpasādṛśyānmohito vānarottama ,
notsṛjāmi mahāvegaṃ śaraṃ śatrunibarhaṇam.
32. tataḥ aham rūpasādṛśyāt mohitaḥ vānarottama
na utsṛjāmi mahāvegam śaram śatrunibarhaṇam
32. vānarottama tataḥ aham rūpasādṛśyāt mohitaḥ
na mahāvegam śatrunibarhaṇam śaram utsṛjāmi
32. O best of monkeys, therefore, bewildered by the resemblance in appearance, I did not release the extremely swift, enemy-destroying arrow.
एतन्मुहूर्ते तु मया पश्य वालिनमाहवे ।
निरस्तमिषुणैकेन वेष्टमानं महीतले ॥३३॥
33. etanmuhūrte tu mayā paśya vālinamāhave ,
nirastamiṣuṇaikena veṣṭamānaṃ mahītale.
33. etat muhūrte tu mayā paśya vālinam āhave
nirasta-iṣuṇā ekena veṣṭamānam mahītale
33. tu mayā ekena nirasta-iṣuṇā etat muhūrte
āhave mahītale veṣṭamānam vālinam paśya
33. Indeed, at this very moment, observe Vālin in battle; struck by me with a single discharged arrow, he is now writhing on the ground.
अभिज्ञानं कुरुष्व त्वमात्मनो वानरेश्वर ।
येन त्वामभिजानीयां द्वन्द्वयुद्धमुपागतम् ॥३४॥
34. abhijñānaṃ kuruṣva tvamātmano vānareśvara ,
yena tvāmabhijānīyāṃ dvandvayuddhamupāgatam.
34. abhijñānam kuruṣva tvam ātmanaḥ vānaréśvara
yena tvām abhijānīyām dvandvayuddham upāgatam
34. vānaréśvara tvam ātmanaḥ abhijñānam kuruṣva yena
(aham) dvandvayuddham upāgatam tvām abhijānīyām
34. O lord of monkeys, create a distinguishing mark for yourself, so that I may recognize you when you enter into a duel.
गजपुष्पीमिमां फुल्लामुत्पाट्य शुभलक्षणाम् ।
कुरु लक्ष्मण कण्ठे ऽस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ॥३५॥
35. gajapuṣpīmimāṃ phullāmutpāṭya śubhalakṣaṇām ,
kuru lakṣmaṇa kaṇṭhe'sya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ.
35. gajapuṣpīm imām phullām utpāṭya śubhalakṣaṇām
kuru lakṣmaṇa kaṇṭhe asya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ
35. lakṣmaṇa imām phullām śubhalakṣaṇām gajapuṣpīm
utpāṭya asya mahātmanaḥ sugrīvasya kaṇṭhe kuru
35. O Lakṣmaṇa, uproot this auspiciously marked, blooming Gajapuṣpī plant, and place it around the neck of this noble Sugrīva.
ततो गिरितटे जातामुत्पाट्य कुसुमायुताम् ।
लक्ष्मणो गजपुष्पीं तां तस्य कण्ठे व्यसर्जयत् ॥३६॥
36. tato giritaṭe jātāmutpāṭya kusumāyutām ,
lakṣmaṇo gajapuṣpīṃ tāṃ tasya kaṇṭhe vyasarjayat.
36. tataḥ giritate jātām utpāṭya kusuma-āyutām
lakṣmaṇaḥ gajapuṣpīm tām tasya kaṇṭhe vyasarjayat
36. tataḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ giritate jātām kusuma-āyutām
tām gajapuṣpīm utpāṭya tasya kaṇṭhe vyasarjayat
36. Then, Lakṣmaṇa uprooted that Gajapuṣpī creeper, which had grown on the mountain slope and was adorned with flowers, and placed it around Sugrīva's neck.
स तथा शुशुभे श्रीमांल् लतया कण्ठसक्तया ।
मालयेव बलाकानां ससंध्य इव तोयदः ॥३७॥
37. sa tathā śuśubhe śrīmāṃl latayā kaṇṭhasaktayā ,
mālayeva balākānāṃ sasaṃdhya iva toyadaḥ.
37. saḥ tathā śuśubhe śrīmān latayā kaṇṭhasaktayā
mālayā iva balākānām sasaṃdhyaḥ iva toyadaḥ
37. saḥ śrīmān tathā kaṇṭhasaktayā latayā śuśubhe,
balākānām mālayā iva,
sasaṃdhyaḥ toyadaḥ iva.
37. Glorious, he shone with that creeper clinging to his neck, resembling a garland of cranes or a cloud illuminated by twilight.
विभ्राजमानो वपुषा रामवाक्यसमाहितः ।
जगाम सह रामेण किष्किन्धां वालिपालिताम् ॥३८॥
38. vibhrājamāno vapuṣā rāmavākyasamāhitaḥ ,
jagāma saha rāmeṇa kiṣkindhāṃ vālipālitām.
38. vibhrājamānaḥ vapuṣā rāmavākya-samāhitaḥ
jagāma saha rāmeṇa kiṣkindhām vāli-pālitām
38. vapuṣā vibhrājamānaḥ rāmavākya-samāhitaḥ,
saḥ rāmeṇa saha vāli-pālitām kiṣkindhām jagāma.
38. Radiant in his physical form and attentive to Rāma's words, he proceeded with Rāma to Kiṣkindhā, which was then governed by Vāli.
