तप्यमानं तथा रामं सीताहरणकर्शितम् ।
लोकानामभवे युक्तं साम्वर्तकमिवानलम् ॥१॥
1. tapyamānaṃ tathā rāmaṃ sītāharaṇakarśitam ,
lokānāmabhave yuktaṃ sāmvartakamivānalam.

1. Rāma, thus tormented and wasted away by the abduction of Sītā, was ready for the destruction of the worlds, like the world-ending (Saṃvartaka) fire.
वीक्षमाणं धनुः सज्यं निःश्वसन्तं मुहुर्मुहुः ।
हन्तुकामं पशुं रुद्रं क्रुद्धं दक्षक्रतौ यथा ॥२॥
2. vīkṣamāṇaṃ dhanuḥ sajyaṃ niḥśvasantaṃ muhurmuhuḥ ,
hantukāmaṃ paśuṃ rudraṃ kruddhaṃ dakṣakratau yathā.
2. vīkṣamāṇam dhanuḥ sajyam niḥśvasantam muhur-muhuḥ
hantu-kāmam paśum rudram kruddham dakṣa-kratau yathā
2. dhanuḥ sajyam vīkṣamāṇam,
muhur-muhuḥ niḥśvasantam,
paśum hantu-kāmam,
dakṣa-kratau kruddham rudram yathā.
2. Gazing at his strung bow, sighing repeatedly, and desirous of slaying a victim, he was like Rudra, enraged at Dakṣa's Vedic ritual (yajña).
अदृष्टपूर्वं संक्रुद्धं दृष्ट्वा रामं स लक्ष्मणः ।
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं मुखेन परिशुष्यता ॥३॥
3. adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ saṃkruddhaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṃ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
abravīt prāñjalirvākyaṃ mukhena pariśuṣyatā.
3. adṛṣṭa-pūrvam saṃkruddham dṛṣṭvā rāmam sa lakṣmaṇaḥ
abravīt prāñjaliḥ vākyam mukhena pariśuṣyatā
3. sa lakṣmaṇaḥ adṛṣṭa-pūrvam saṃkruddham rāmam dṛṣṭvā,
prāñjaliḥ mukhena pariśuṣyatā vākyam abravīt.
3. Having seen Rāma thus enraged in an unprecedented manner, Lakṣmaṇa, with folded hands and a face drying up (from fear), spoke these words.
पुरा भूत्वा मृदुर्दान्तः सर्वभूतहिते रतः ।
न क्रोधवशमापन्नः प्रकृतिं हातुमर्हसि ॥४॥
4. purā bhūtvā mṛdurdāntaḥ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ ,
na krodhavaśamāpannaḥ prakṛtiṃ hātumarhasi.
4. purā bhūtvā mṛduḥ dāntaḥ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ
na krodhavaśam āpannaḥ prakṛtim hātum arhasi
4. purā mṛduḥ dāntaḥ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ bhūtvā

4. You, who were formerly gentle, self-controlled, and devoted to the welfare of all beings, should not abandon your intrinsic nature (prakṛti) by succumbing to anger.
चन्द्रे लक्ष्णीः प्रभा सूर्ये गतिर्वायौ भुवि क्षमा ।
एतच्च नियतं सर्वं त्वयि चानुत्तमं यशः ॥५॥
5. candre lakṣṇīḥ prabhā sūrye gatirvāyau bhuvi kṣamā ,
etacca niyataṃ sarvaṃ tvayi cānuttamaṃ yaśaḥ.
5. candre lakṣmīḥ prabhā sūrye gatiḥ vāyau bhuvi kṣamā
etat ca niyatam sarvam tvayi ca anuttamam yaśaḥ
5. candre lakṣmīḥ sūrye prabhā vāyau gatiḥ bhuvi kṣamā

5. Beauty resides in the moon, radiance in the sun, movement in the wind, and patience in the earth. All these are inherent qualities, and in you resides unsurpassed glory.
न तु जानामि कस्यायं भग्नः सांग्रामिको रथः ।
केन वा कस्य वा हेतोः सायुधः सपरिच्छदः ॥६॥
6. na tu jānāmi kasyāyaṃ bhagnaḥ sāṃgrāmiko rathaḥ ,
kena vā kasya vā hetoḥ sāyudhaḥ saparicchadaḥ.
6. na tu jānāmi kasya ayam bhagnaḥ sāṅgrāmikaḥ rathaḥ
kena vā kasya vā hetoḥ sāyudhaḥ saparicchadaḥ
6. tu aham na jānāmi ayam kasya bhagnaḥ sāṅgrāmikaḥ
rathaḥ kena vā kasya vā hetoḥ sāyudhaḥ saparicchadaḥ
6. But I do not know whose this broken battle-chariot is, nor by whom, or for what reason, it lies here armed and fully equipped.
खुरनेमिक्षतश्चायं सिक्तो रुधिरबिन्दुभिः ।
देशो निवृत्तसंग्रामः सुघोरः पार्थिवात्मज ॥७॥
7. khuranemikṣataścāyaṃ sikto rudhirabindubhiḥ ,
deśo nivṛttasaṃgrāmaḥ sughoraḥ pārthivātmaja.
7. khuranemikṣataḥ ca ayam siktaḥ rudhirabindubhiḥ
deśaḥ nivṛttasaṅgrāmaḥ sughoraḥ pārthivātmaja
7. pārthivātmaja ayam sughoraḥ nivṛttasaṅgrāmaḥ
deśaḥ ca khuranemikṣataḥ rudhirabindubhiḥ siktaḥ
7. O son of a king, this terrible place, where the battle has now ceased, is marked by cuts from hooves and wheel-rims, and is sprinkled with drops of blood.
एकस्य तु विमर्दो ऽयं न द्वयोर्वदतां वर ।
न हि वृत्तं हि पश्यामि बलस्य महतः पदम् ॥८॥
8. ekasya tu vimardo'yaṃ na dvayorvadatāṃ vara ,
na hi vṛttaṃ hi paśyāmi balasya mahataḥ padam.
8. ekasya tu vimardaḥ ayam na dvayoḥ vadatāṃ vara
na hi vṛttam hi paśyāmi balasya mahataḥ padam
8. vadatāṃ vara ayam vimardaḥ ekasya tu na dvayoḥ
hi na paśyāmi hi mahataḥ balasya padam vṛttam
8. O best of speakers, this struggle is surely concerning one party, not two. Indeed, I do not perceive that any great manifestation of power has occurred.
नैकस्य तु कृते लोकान् विनाशयितुमर्हसि ।
युक्तदण्डा हि मृदवः प्रशान्ता वसुधाधिपाः ॥९॥
9. naikasya tu kṛte lokān vināśayitumarhasi ,
yuktadaṇḍā hi mṛdavaḥ praśāntā vasudhādhipāḥ.
9. na ekasya tu kṛte lokān vināśayitum arhasi
yuktadaṇḍāḥ hi mṛdavaḥ praśāntāḥ vasudhādhipāḥ
9. tvam ekasya kṛte lokān vināśayitum na arhasi
hi yuktadaṇḍāḥ mṛdavaḥ praśāntāḥ vasudhādhipāḥ
9. You ought not to destroy entire worlds for the sake of one person. Indeed, rulers (vasudhādhipāḥ) who administer justice appropriately are both gentle and tranquil.
सदा त्वं सर्वभूतानां शरण्यः परमा गतिः ।
को नु दारप्रणाशं ते साधु मन्येत राघव ॥१०॥
10. sadā tvaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ śaraṇyaḥ paramā gatiḥ ,
ko nu dārapraṇāśaṃ te sādhu manyeta rāghava.
10. sadā tvam sarvabhūtānām śaraṇyaḥ paramā gatiḥ
kaḥ nu dārapranāśam te sādhu manyeta rāghava
10. tvam sadā sarvabhūtānām śaraṇyaḥ paramā gatiḥ
rāghava kaḥ nu te dārapranāśam sādhu manyeta
10. You are always the refuge and supreme goal for all beings. O Rāghava, who indeed would consider the loss of your wife as proper?
सरितः सागराः शैला देवगन्धर्वदानवाः ।
नालं ते विप्रियं कर्तुं दीक्षितस्येव साधवः ॥११॥
11. saritaḥ sāgarāḥ śailā devagandharvadānavāḥ ,
nālaṃ te vipriyaṃ kartuṃ dīkṣitasyeva sādhavaḥ.
11. saritaḥ sāgarāḥ śailāḥ devagandharvadānavāḥ na
alam te vipriyam kartum dīkṣitasya iva sādhavaḥ
11. saritaḥ sāgarāḥ śailāḥ devagandharvadānavāḥ te
vipriyam kartum na alam dīkṣitasya iva sādhavaḥ
11. Rivers, oceans, mountains, and even gods, Gandharvas, and Dānavas (demons) are not capable of causing you any displeasure (vipriya). [They are helpless] just as righteous individuals (sādhavaḥ) are before one who is initiated for a sacred ritual.
येन राजन् हृता सीता तमन्वेषितुमर्हसि ।
मद्द्वितीयो धनुष्पाणिः सहायैः परमर्षिभिः ॥१२॥
12. yena rājan hṛtā sītā tamanveṣitumarhasi ,
maddvitīyo dhanuṣpāṇiḥ sahāyaiḥ paramarṣibhiḥ.
12. yena rājan hṛtā sītā tam anveṣitum arhasi
maddvitīyaḥ dhanuṣpāṇiḥ sahāyaiḥ paramarṣibhiḥ
12. rājan yena sītā hṛtā tam anveṣitum arhasi mat
dvitīyaḥ dhanuṣpāṇiḥ paramarṣibhiḥ sahāyaiḥ
12. O King, you should search for the one by whom Sītā was abducted. I will be your companion, armed with a bow, along with the great sages as allies.
समुद्रं च विचेष्यामः पर्वतांश्च वनानि च ।
गुहाश्च विविधा घोरा नलिनीः पार्वतीश्च ह ॥१३॥
13. samudraṃ ca viceṣyāmaḥ parvatāṃśca vanāni ca ,
guhāśca vividhā ghorā nalinīḥ pārvatīśca ha.
13. samudram ca viceṣyāmaḥ parvatān ca vanāni ca
guhāḥ ca vividhāḥ ghorāḥ nalinīḥ pārvatīḥ ca ha
13. ca ca ca ha samudram parvatān vanāni vividhāḥ
ghorāḥ guhāḥ nalinīḥ pārvatīḥ ca viceṣyāmaḥ
13. We will search the ocean, mountains, forests, various terrifying caves, lotus ponds, and mountainous regions.
देवगन्धर्वलोकांश्च विचेष्यामः समाहिताः ।
यावन्नाधिगमिष्यामस्तव भार्यापहारिणम् ॥१४॥
14. devagandharvalokāṃśca viceṣyāmaḥ samāhitāḥ ,
yāvannādhigamiṣyāmastava bhāryāpahāriṇam.
14. devagandharvalokān ca viceṣyāmaḥ samāhitāḥ
yāvat na adhigamiṣyāmaḥ tava bhāryāpahāriṇam
14. ca samāhitāḥ devagandharvalokān viceṣyāmaḥ
yāvat tava bhāryāpahāriṇam na adhigamiṣyāmaḥ
14. We will diligently search the worlds of gods and gandharvas until we find the one who abducted your wife.
न चेत् साम्ना प्रदास्यन्ति पत्नीं ते त्रिदशेश्वराः ।
कोसलेन्द्र ततः पश्चात् प्राप्तकालं करिष्यसि ॥१५॥
15. na cet sāmnā pradāsyanti patnīṃ te tridaśeśvarāḥ ,
kosalendra tataḥ paścāt prāptakālaṃ kariṣyasi.
15. na cet sāmnā pradāsyanti patnīm te tridaśeśvarāḥ
kosalendra tataḥ paścāt prāptakālam kariṣyasi
15. kosalendra cet tridaśeśvarāḥ te patnīm sāmnā na
pradāsyanti tataḥ paścāt prāptakālam kariṣyasi
15. O Lord of Kosala, if the lords of the gods do not return your wife peacefully, then afterwards you will do what is appropriate.
शीलेन साम्ना विनयेन सीतां नयेन न प्राप्स्यसि चेन्नरेन्द्र ।
ततः समुत्सादय हेमपुङ्खैर्महेन्द्रवज्रप्रतिमैः शरौघैः ॥१६॥
16. śīlena sāmnā vinayena sītāṃ nayena na prāpsyasi cennarendra ,
tataḥ samutsādaya hemapuṅkhairmahendravajrapratimaiḥ śaraughaiḥ.

na prāpsyasi cet narendra
tataḥ samutsādaya hemapuṅkhaiḥ
mahendravajrapratimaiḥ śaraughaiḥ

hemapuṅkhaiḥ śaraughaiḥ samutsādaya
16. O King, if you will not regain Sītā through virtuous conduct, conciliation, humility, or proper policy, then utterly destroy [the enemy] with barrages of gold-feathered arrows that are like Indra's thunderbolt.
