तां कथामिलसंबद्धां रामेण समुदीरिताम् ।
लक्ष्मणो भरतश्चैव श्रुत्वा परमविस्मितौ ॥१॥
1. tāṃ kathāmilasaṃbaddhāṃ rāmeṇa samudīritām ,

1. Having heard that story, related by Rāma and concerning Ilā, Lakṣmaṇa and Bharata were exceedingly astonished.

विस्तरं तस्य भावस्य तदा पप्रच्छतुः पुनः ॥२॥
2. tau rāmaṃ prāñjalībhūtvā tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ ,
vistaraṃ tasya bhāvasya tadā papracchatuḥ punaḥ.

2. Then, those two (Lakṣmaṇa and Bharata), joining their palms in reverence before Rāma, again asked about the detailed nature of that noble-souled king's experience (of transformation).
कथं स राजा स्त्रीभूतो वर्तयामास दुर्गतिम् ।
पुरुषो वा यदा भूतः कां वृत्तिं वर्तयत्यसौ ॥३॥
3. kathaṃ sa rājā strībhūto vartayāmāsa durgatim ,
puruṣo vā yadā bhūtaḥ kāṃ vṛttiṃ vartayatyasau.
3. katham saḥ rājā strī bhūtaḥ vartayām āsa durgatim
puruṣaḥ vā yadā bhūtaḥ kām vṛttim vartayati asau
3. katham saḥ rājā strī bhūtaḥ durgatim vartayām āsa

3. How did that king, after becoming a woman, endure such difficult circumstances? And what kind of life did he lead when he reverted to being a man?
तयोस्तद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा कौतूहलसमन्वितम् ।
कथयामास काकुत्ष्ठस्तस्य राज्ञो यथा गतम् ॥४॥
4. tayostadbhāṣitaṃ śrutvā kautūhalasamanvitam ,
kathayāmāsa kākutṣṭhastasya rājño yathā gatam.

4. Having heard their curious discourse, Kakutstha recounted to that king what had transpired.
तमेव प्रथमं मासं स्त्रीभूत्वा लोकसुन्दरी ।
ताभिः परिवृता स्त्रीभिर्ये ऽस्य पूर्वं पदानुगाः ॥५॥
5. tameva prathamaṃ māsaṃ strībhūtvā lokasundarī ,
tābhiḥ parivṛtā strībhirye'sya pūrvaṃ padānugāḥ.
5. tam eva prathamam māsam strībhūtvā lokasundarī
tābhiḥ parivṛtā strībhiḥ ye asya pūrvam padānugāḥ

5. Indeed, for that first month, having transformed into a woman, she became a world-renowned beauty, surrounded by those women who had previously been his male attendants.
तत् काननं विगाह्याशु विजह्रे लोकसुन्दरी ।
द्रुमगुल्मलताकीर्णं पद्भ्यां पद्मदलेक्षणा ॥६॥
6. tat kānanaṃ vigāhyāśu vijahre lokasundarī ,
drumagulmalatākīrṇaṃ padbhyāṃ padmadalekṣaṇā.

6. The world-renowned beauty, whose eyes resembled lotus petals, swiftly entered that forest, which was dense with trees, bushes, and creepers, and roamed about on foot.
वाहनानि च सर्वाणि संत्यक्त्वा वै समन्ततः ।
पर्वताभोगविवरे तस्मिन् रेमे इला तदा ॥७॥
7. vāhanāni ca sarvāṇi saṃtyaktvā vai samantataḥ ,
parvatābhogavivare tasmin reme ilā tadā.

7. Indeed, having completely abandoned all her vehicles, (Ilā) then found delight in that spacious mountain cavern.
अथ तस्मिन् वनोद्देशे पर्वतस्याविदूरतः ।
सरः सुरुचिरप्रख्यं नानापक्षिगणायुतम् ॥८॥
8. atha tasmin vanoddeśe parvatasyāvidūrataḥ ,
saraḥ suruciraprakhyaṃ nānāpakṣigaṇāyutam.
8. atha tasmin vanoddeśe parvatasya avidūrataḥ
| saraḥ suruciraprakhyaṃ nānāpakṣigaṇāyutam

8. Then, in that forest region, not far from the mountain, [she saw] a lake, exceedingly beautiful in appearance and filled with various flocks of birds.
ददर्श सा इला तस्मिन्बुधं सोमसुतं तदा ।
ज्वलन्तं स्वेन वपुषा पूर्णं सोममिवोदितम् ॥९॥
9. dadarśa sā ilā tasminbudhaṃ somasutaṃ tadā ,
jvalantaṃ svena vapuṣā pūrṇaṃ somamivoditam.
9. dadarśa sā ilā tasmin budhaṃ somasutaṃ tadā |
jvalantaṃ svena vapuṣā pūrṇaṃ somam iva uditam
9. tadā sā ilā tasmin somasutaṃ budhaṃ svena vapuṣā
jvalantaṃ uditaṃ pūrṇaṃ somam iva dadarśa
9. Then, Ilā, in that place, saw Budha, the son of Soma, shining with his own form, like the full moon having risen.
तपन्तं च तपस्तीव्रमम्भोमध्ये दुरासदम् ।
यशक् सरं कामगमं तारुण्ये पर्यवस्थितम् ॥१०॥
10. tapantaṃ ca tapastīvramambhomadhye durāsadam ,
yaśak saraṃ kāmagamaṃ tāruṇye paryavasthitam.
10. tapantaṃ ca tapaḥ tīvram ambhaḥmadhye durāsadam
| yaśak saraṃ kāmagamaṃ tāruṇye paryavasthitam
10. ca tīvraṃ tapaḥ ambhaḥmadhye durāsadaṃ tapantaṃ,
yaśak saraṃ kāmagamaṃ tāruṇye paryavasthitam
10. And performing intense penance (tapas) in the midst of water, he was unapproachable; (he was also) powerful, moving freely as he wished, and established in youth.
सा तं जलाशयं सर्वं क्षोभयामास विस्मिता ।
सह तैः पूर पुरुषैः स्त्रीभूतै रघुनन्दन ॥११॥
11. sā taṃ jalāśayaṃ sarvaṃ kṣobhayāmāsa vismitā ,
saha taiḥ pūra puruṣaiḥ strībhūtai raghunandana.
11. sā taṃ jalāśayam sarvam kṣobhayāmāsa vismitā |
saha taiḥ pūra puruṣaiḥ strībhūtaiḥ raghunandana
11. raghunandana,
vismitā sā taiḥ pūra puruṣaiḥ strībhūtaiḥ saha taṃ sarvaṃ jalāśayam kṣobhayāmāsa
11. O descendant of Raghu, she, astonished, agitated that entire lake along with those numerous men who had become women.
बुधस्तु तां निरीक्ष्यैव कामबाणाभिपीडितः ।
नोपलेभे तदात्मानं चचाल च तदाम्भसि ॥१२॥
12. budhastu tāṃ nirīkṣyaiva kāmabāṇābhipīḍitaḥ ,
nopalebhe tadātmānaṃ cacāla ca tadāmbhasi.
12. budhaḥ tu tām nirīkṣya eva kāma-bāṇa-abhipīḍitaḥ
na upalebhe tadā ātmānam cacāla ca tadā ambhasi
12. budhaḥ tu tām nirīkṣya eva kāma-bāṇa-abhipīḍitaḥ
tadā ātmānam na upalebhe ca tadā ambhasi cacāla
12. Just upon seeing her, Budha was so afflicted by the arrows of desire (kāma) that he lost awareness of himself (ātman) and staggered in the water.
इलां निरीक्षमाणः स त्रैलोक्याभ्यधिकां शुभाम् ।
चिन्तां समभ्यतिक्रामत् का न्वियं देवताधिका ॥१३॥
13. ilāṃ nirīkṣamāṇaḥ sa trailokyābhyadhikāṃ śubhām ,
cintāṃ samabhyatikrāmat kā nviyaṃ devatādhikā.
13. ilām nirīkṣamāṇaḥ saḥ trailokya-abhyadhikām śubhām
cintām sam-abhyatikrāmat kā nu iyam devatā-adhikā
13. saḥ trailokya-abhyadhikām śubhām ilām nirīkṣamāṇaḥ
cintām sam-abhyatikrāmat kā nu iyam devatā-adhikā
13. As he gazed at Ilā, who was more beautiful and excellent than anything in the three worlds, he became overwhelmed by the thought, "Who indeed is this magnificent divine being?"
न देवीषु न नागीषु नासुरीष्वप्सरःसु च ।
दृष्टपूर्वा मया का चिद् रूपेणैतेन शोभिता ॥१४॥
14. na devīṣu na nāgīṣu nāsurīṣvapsaraḥsu ca ,
dṛṣṭapūrvā mayā kā cid rūpeṇaitena śobhitā.
14. na devīṣu na nāgīṣu na asurīṣu apsaraḥsu ca
dṛṣṭa-pūrvā mayā kā cit rūpeṇa etena śobhitā
14. mayā devīṣu na nāgīṣu na asurīṣu ca apsaraḥsu
na etena rūpeṇa śobhitā kā cit dṛṣṭa-pūrvā
14. Never before have I seen anyone adorned with such beauty among goddesses, female serpents (nāgī), female demons (asurī), or celestial nymphs (apsaras).
सदृशीयं मम भवेद् यदि नान्यपरिग्रहा ।
इति बुद्धिं समास्थाय जलात् स्थलमुपागमत् ॥१५॥
15. sadṛśīyaṃ mama bhaved yadi nānyaparigrahā ,
iti buddhiṃ samāsthāya jalāt sthalamupāgamat.
15. sadṛśī iyam mama bhavet yadi na anya-parigrahā
iti buddhim sam-āsthāya jalāt sthalam upa-āgamat
15. iyam mama sadṛśī bhavet yadi anya-parigrahā na
iti buddhim sam-āsthāya jalāt sthalam upa-āgamat
15. "She would be perfect for me if she does not already belong to another," thinking thus, he came out of the water onto the land.
स आश्रमं समुपागम्य चतस्रः प्रमदास्ततः ।
शब्दापयत धर्मात्मा ताश्चैनं च ववन्दिरे ॥१६॥
16. sa āśramaṃ samupāgamya catasraḥ pramadāstataḥ ,
śabdāpayata dharmātmā tāścainaṃ ca vavandire.
16. saḥ āśramam samupāgamya catasraḥ pramadāḥ tataḥ
śabdāpayat dharmātmā tāḥ ca enam ca vavandire
16. The righteous one (dharmātman) approached that hermitage and then summoned four women. And they, in turn, reverenced him.
स ताः पप्रच्छ धर्मात्म कस्यैषा लोकसुन्दरी ।
किमर्थमागता चेह सत्यमाख्यात माचिरम् ॥१७॥
17. sa tāḥ papraccha dharmātma kasyaiṣā lokasundarī ,
kimarthamāgatā ceha satyamākhyāta māciram.
17. saḥ tāḥ papraccha dharmātman kasya eṣā lokasundarī
kimartham āgatā ca iha satyam ākhyāta mā aciram
17. That righteous one (dharmātman) asked them, "Whose is this supremely beautiful woman? For what purpose has she come here? Tell me the truth, do not delay."
शुभं तु तस्य तद्वाक्यं मधुरं मधुराक्षरम् ।
श्रुत्वा तु ताः स्त्रियः सर्वा ऊचुर्मधुरया गिरा ॥१८॥
18. śubhaṃ tu tasya tadvākyaṃ madhuraṃ madhurākṣaram ,
śrutvā tu tāḥ striyaḥ sarvā ūcurmadhurayā girā.
18. śubham tu tasya tat vākyam madhuram madhurākṣaram
śrutvā tu tāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ ūcuḥ madhurayā girā
18. Having heard that auspicious and sweet speech of his, with its melodious syllables, all those women then spoke with a sweet voice.
अस्माकमेषा सुश्रोणी प्रभुत्वे वर्तते सदा ।
अपतिः काननान्तेषु सहास्माभिरटत्यसौ ॥१९॥
19. asmākameṣā suśroṇī prabhutve vartate sadā ,
apatiḥ kānanānteṣu sahāsmābhiraṭatyasau.
19. asmākam eṣā suśroṇī prabhutve vartate sadā
apatiḥ kānanānteṣu saha asmābhiḥ aṭati asau
19. This beautiful woman is always under our authority. Having no husband, she wanders with us in the forest regions.
तद्वाक्यमव्यक्तपदं तासां स्त्रीणां निशम्य तु ।
विद्यामावर्तनीं पुण्यामावर्तयत स द्विजः ॥२०॥
20. tadvākyamavyaktapadaṃ tāsāṃ strīṇāṃ niśamya tu ,
vidyāmāvartanīṃ puṇyāmāvartayata sa dvijaḥ.
20. tat vākyam avyaktapadam tāsām strīṇām niśamya
tu vidyām āvartanīm puṇyām āvartayat sa dvijaḥ
20. saḥ dvijaḥ tāsām strīṇām tat avyaktapadam vākyam
niśamya tu puṇyām āvartanīm vidyām āvartayat
20. Having heard those indistinct words from those women, that twice-born (dvija) then activated a sacred, reanimating knowledge (vidyā).
सो ऽर्थं विदित्वा निखिलं तस्य राज्ञो यथागतम् ।
सर्वा एव स्त्रियस्ताश्च बभाषे मुनिपुंगवः ॥२१॥
21. so'rthaṃ viditvā nikhilaṃ tasya rājño yathāgatam ,
sarvā eva striyastāśca babhāṣe munipuṃgavaḥ.
21. saḥ artham viditvā nikhilam tasya rājñaḥ yathāgatam
sarvāḥ eva striyaḥ tāḥ ca babhāṣe munipuṅgavaḥ
21. saḥ munipuṅgavaḥ tasya rājñaḥ yathāgatam nikhilam
artham viditvā tāḥ sarvāḥ striyaḥ eva ca babhāṣe
21. Having completely understood the king's matter just as it had transpired, that foremost sage (munipuṅgava) then spoke to all those women.
अत्र किं पुरुषा भद्रा अवसञ् शैलरोधसि ।
वत्स्यथास्मिन् गिरौ यूयमवकाशो विधीयताम् ॥२२॥
22. atra kiṃ puruṣā bhadrā avasañ śailarodhasi ,
vatsyathāsmin girau yūyamavakāśo vidhīyatām.
22. atra kim puruṣāḥ bhadrāḥ avasan śailarodhasī
vatsyatha asmin girau yūyam avakāśaḥ vidhīyatām
22. atra śailarodhasī kim bhadrāḥ puruṣāḥ avasan
yūyam asmin girau vatsyatha avakāśaḥ vidhīyatām
22. Did any excellent men (puruṣa) reside here on the mountain slope? You all shall dwell on this mountain; let a suitable place be arranged.
मूलपुत्रफलैः सर्वा वर्तयिष्यथ नित्यदा ।
स्त्रियः किम्पुरुषान्नाम भर्तॄन् समुपलप्स्यथ ॥२३॥
23. mūlaputraphalaiḥ sarvā vartayiṣyatha nityadā ,
striyaḥ kimpuruṣānnāma bhartṝn samupalapsyatha.
23. mūlaputraphalaiḥ sarvāḥ vartayiṣyatha nityadā
striyaḥ kimpuruṣān nāma bhartṝn samupalapsyatha
23. sarvāḥ nityadā mūlaputraphalaiḥ vartayiṣyatha
striyaḥ nāma kimpuruṣān bhartṝn samupalapsyatha
23. All of you will perpetually sustain yourselves with roots, sprouts, and fruits. O women, you will indeed obtain Kimpuruṣas as husbands.
ताः श्रुत्वा सोमपुत्रस्य वाचं किंपुरुषीकृताः ।
उपासां चक्रिरे शैलं बह्व्यस्ता बहुधा तदा ॥२४॥
24. tāḥ śrutvā somaputrasya vācaṃ kiṃpuruṣīkṛtāḥ ,
upāsāṃ cakrire śailaṃ bahvyastā bahudhā tadā.
24. tāḥ śrutvā somaputrasya vācam kiṃpuruṣīkṛtāḥ
upāsāṃ cakrire śailam bahvyaḥ tāḥ bahudhā tadā
24. tadā tāḥ bahvyaḥ kiṃpuruṣīkṛtāḥ somaputrasya
vācam śrutvā śailam bahudhā upāsāṃ cakrire
24. Then, having been transformed into (kiṃpuruṣa)s by the speech of Soma's son, those many women worshipped the mountain in various ways.
