When Rāma had thus spoken, Lakṣmaṇa and the greatly glorious Bharata spoke further about that wondrous birth of his.
सा प्रिया सोमपुत्रस्य संवत्सरमथोषिता ।
अकरोत् किं नरश्रेष्ठ तत्त्वं शंसितुमर्हसि ॥२॥

O best of men, what did she, the beloved of Budha, do after residing (with him) for a year? You ought to tell the truth.
तयोस्तद्वाक्यमाधुर्यं निशम्य परिपृच्छतोः ।

Having heard the sweet words of those two (Lava and Kusha) who were inquiring, Rama again recounted this story, O daughters of Prajāpati.
पुरुषत्वं गते शूरे बुधः परमबुद्धिमान् ।
संवर्तं परमोदारमाजुहाव महायशाः ॥४॥

When the hero attained manhood, the highly renowned and most intelligent Budha invoked the exceedingly noble (sage) Saṃvarta.
च्यवनं भृगुपुत्रं च मुनिं चारिष्टनेमिनम् ।
प्रमोदनं मोदकरं ततो दुर्वाससं मुनिम् ॥५॥

5. cyavanaṃ bhṛguputraṃ ca muniṃ cāriṣṭaneminam ,

And he invoked Cyavana, the son of Bhṛgu, the sage (muni) Ariṣṭanemi, Pramodana, Modakara, and then the sage (muni) Durvāsas.
एतान् सर्वान् समानीय वाक्यज्ञस्तत्त्वदर्शिनः ।
उवाच सर्वान् सुहृदो धैर्येण सुसमाहितः ॥६॥

6. etān sarvān samānīya vākyajñastattvadarśinaḥ ,

The eloquent (Budha), a seer of reality, perfectly composed and with great patience, having gathered all these (sages), then spoke to all his friends.
अयं राजा महाबाहुः कर्दमस्य इलः सुतः ।
जानीतैनं यथा भूतं श्रेयो ह्यस्य विधीयताम् ॥७॥

7. ayaṃ rājā mahābāhuḥ kardamasya ilaḥ sutaḥ ,

This mighty-armed King Ila is the son of Kardama. Recognize him for who he truly is, and ensure his welfare.
तेषां संवदतामेव तमाश्रममुपागमत् ।
कर्दमः सुमहातेजा द्विजैः सह महात्मभिः ॥८॥

Even as they were conversing, Kardama, of great splendor, arrived at that hermitage (āśrama) accompanied by great-souled twice-born ones (dvija).
पुलस्त्यश्च क्रतुश्चैव वषट्कारस्तथैव च ।
ओंकारश्च महातेजास्तमाश्रममुपागमन् ॥९॥

Pulastya, Kratu, Vaṣaṭkāra, and also the greatly brilliant Omkara, all arrived at that hermitage (āśrama).
ते सर्वे हृष्टमनसः परस्परसमागमे ।
हितैषिणो बाह्लि पतेः पृथग्वाक्यमथाब्रुवन् ॥१०॥

With joyful hearts at their reunion, all of them, being well-wishers of the lord of Bāhli, then spoke their respective words.
कर्दमस्त्वब्रवीद्वाक्यं सुतार्थं परमं हितम् ।
द्विजाः शृणुत मद्वाक्यं यच्छ्रेयः पार्थिवस्य हि ॥११॥

11. kardamastvabravīdvākyaṃ sutārthaṃ paramaṃ hitam ,
dvijāḥ śṛṇuta madvākyaṃ yacchreyaḥ pārthivasya hi.

kardamaḥ tu abravīt vākyam suta-artham paramam hitam
dvijāḥ śṛṇuta mat-vākyam yat śreyaḥ pārthivasya hi

kardamaḥ tu suta-artham paramam hitam vākyam abravīt

Kardama then spoke supremely beneficial words regarding the birth of a son. "O twice-born ones (dvija), listen to my words, which are certainly for the king's welfare."
नान्यं पश्यामि भैषज्यमन्तरेण वृषध्वजम् ।
नाश्वमेधात् परो यज्ञः प्रियश्चैव महात्मनः ॥१२॥

12. nānyaṃ paśyāmi bhaiṣajyamantareṇa vṛṣadhvajam ,
nāśvamedhāt paro yajñaḥ priyaścaiva mahātmanaḥ.

I see no other remedy apart from Vṛṣadhvaja (Shiva). No (Vedic ritual) yajña is superior to the aśvamedha, and it is indeed very dear to the great lord (mahātman).
तस्माद् यजामहे सर्वे पार्थिवार्थे दुरासदम् ।
कर्दमेनैवमुक्तास्तु सर्व एव द्विजर्षभाः ।
रोचयन्ति स्म तं यज्ञं रुद्रस्याराधनं प्रति ॥१३॥

13. tasmād yajāmahe sarve pārthivārthe durāsadam ,
kardamenaivamuktāstu sarva eva dvijarṣabhāḥ ,
rocayanti sma taṃ yajñaṃ rudrasyārādhanaṃ prati.

Therefore, let all of us perform that great (Vedic ritual) yajña, difficult to accomplish, for the sake of the king. Thus addressed by Kardama, all the foremost twice-born (dvija-ṛṣabha) indeed approved of that (Vedic ritual) yajña for the propitiation of Rudra.

Indeed, the royal sage (rājarṣi), Saṃvarta's renowned disciple, Marutta, a conqueror of enemy cities, performed that (Vedic ritual) yajña.

15. tato yajño mahānāsīdbudhāśramasamīpataḥ ,

Then a great Vedic ritual (yajña) took place near Budha's hermitage. And Rudra, of great renown, attained supreme satisfaction.
अथ यज्ञसमाप्तौ तु प्रीतः परमया मुदा ।
उमापतिर्द्विजान् सर्वानुवाचेदमिलां प्रति ॥१६॥

Then, at the conclusion of the Vedic ritual (yajña), Umāpati, delighted with supreme joy, spoke this to all the brahmins concerning Ila.
प्रीतो ऽस्मि हयमेधेन भक्त्या च द्विजसत्तमाः ।
अस्य बाह्लिपतेश्चैव किं करोमि प्रियं शुभम् ॥१७॥

17. prīto'smi hayamedhena bhaktyā ca dvijasattamāḥ ,
asya bāhlipateścaiva kiṃ karomi priyaṃ śubham.

“O best among brahmins, I am pleased by this horse-sacrifice and by your devotion (bhakti). What auspicious and favorable deed shall I do for this lord of Bahlika?”
तथा वदति देवेशे द्विजास्ते सुसमाहिताः ।
प्रसादयन्ति देवेशं यथा स्यात् पुरुषस्त्विला ॥१८॥

18. tathā vadati deveśe dvijāste susamāhitāḥ ,

When the Lord of gods spoke thus, those brahmins, being well-composed, propitiated the Lord of gods so that Ila might indeed become a male (puruṣa).
ततः प्रीतमना रुद्रः पुरुषत्वं ददौ पुनः ।
इलायै सुमहातेजा दत्त्वा चान्तरधीयत ॥१९॥

19. tataḥ prītamanā rudraḥ puruṣatvaṃ dadau punaḥ ,

Then Rudra, whose mind was pleased, again bestowed manhood. Having granted it to Ilā, the exceedingly glorious one then disappeared.
निवृत्ते हयमेधे तु गते चादर्शनं हरे ।
यथागतं द्विजाः सर्वे अगच्छन्दीर्घदर्शिनः ॥२०॥

20. nivṛtte hayamedhe tu gate cādarśanaṃ hare ,
yathāgataṃ dvijāḥ sarve agacchandīrghadarśinaḥ.

When the horse (hayamedha) Vedic ritual was concluded, and Hari (Vishnu) had also disappeared from sight, all the far-sighted Brahmins (dvijāḥ) departed the way they had come.
राजा तु बाह्लिमुत्सृज्य मध्यदेशे ह्यनुत्तमम् ।
निवेशयामास पुरं प्रतिष्ठानं यशस्करम् ॥२१॥

21. rājā tu bāhlimutsṛjya madhyadeśe hyanuttamam ,
niveśayāmāsa puraṃ pratiṣṭhānaṃ yaśaskaram.

The king, having indeed abandoned Bāhli, established an unrivaled and glorious city called Pratiṣṭhāna in the middle country (madhyadeśa).

King Śaśabindu, the conqueror of enemy cities, reigned in Bāhli. And in Pratiṣṭhāna, King Ila, the son of Prajāpati (Manu), was powerful.

In due course, Ila attained the unsurpassed realm of Brahma. King Pururavas, son of Ila, attained Pratishthana.
ईदृशो ह्यश्वमेधस्य प्रभावः पुरुषर्षभौ ।
स्त्रीभूतः पौरुषं लेभे यच्चान्यदपि दुर्लभम् ॥२४॥

24. īdṛśo hyaśvamedhasya prabhāvaḥ puruṣarṣabhau ,
strībhūtaḥ pauruṣaṃ lebhe yaccānyadapi durlabham.

Such indeed is the power (prabhāva) of the aśvamedha (Vedic ritual), O best among men! Having become a woman, he regained his manliness, and even other things difficult to obtain.
