अत्र यात्रां समीहन्तं शत्रुघ्नो लक्ष्मणानुजः ।
भरतं शोकसंतप्तमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. atra yātrāṃ samīhantaṃ śatrughno lakṣmaṇānujaḥ ,

1. Here, Shatrughna, the younger brother of Lakshmana, addressed these words to Bharata, who was deeply afflicted by grief and intending a journey.
गतिर्यः सर्वभूतानां दुःखे किं पुनरात्मनः ।
स रामः सत्त्व संपन्नः स्त्रिया प्रव्राजितो वनम् ॥२॥
2. gatiryaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ duḥkhe kiṃ punarātmanaḥ ,
sa rāmaḥ sattva saṃpannaḥ striyā pravrājito vanam.
2. gatiḥ yaḥ sarvabhūtānām duḥkhe kim punaḥ ātmanaḥ
saḥ rāmaḥ sattvasampannaḥ striyā pravrājitaḥ vanam
2. yaḥ sarvabhūtānām duḥkhe gatiḥ,

2. He who is the refuge for all beings (sarvabhūtānām) in their distress - how much more so for his own self (ātman) - that very Rama, endowed with strength (sattva), was banished to the forest by a woman.
बलवान् वीर्य संपन्नो लक्ष्मणो नाम यो ऽप्यसौ ।
किं न मोचयते रामं कृत्वापि पितृनिग्रहम् ॥३॥
3. balavān vīrya saṃpanno lakṣmaṇo nāma yo'pyasau ,
kiṃ na mocayate rāmaṃ kṛtvāpi pitṛnigraham.
3. balavān vīryasampannaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma yaḥ api
asau kim na mocayate rāmam kṛtvā api pitṛnigraham
3. balavān vīryasampannaḥ yaḥ asau lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma api,

3. Why did that very Lakshmana, who is strong and endowed with valor, not rescue Rama, even by restraining his father?
पूर्वमेव तु निग्राह्यः समवेक्ष्य नयानयौ ।
उत्पथं यः समारूढो नार्या राजा वशं गतः ॥४॥
4. pūrvameva tu nigrāhyaḥ samavekṣya nayānayau ,
utpathaṃ yaḥ samārūḍho nāryā rājā vaśaṃ gataḥ.
4. pūrvam eva tu nigrāhyaḥ samavekṣya naya-anayau
utpatham yaḥ samārūḍhaḥ nāryā rājā vaśam gataḥ

4. However, a king who has embarked on a misguided path, having fallen under the control of a woman, should be restrained immediately after careful consideration of what is right and what is wrong.
इति संभाषमाणे तु शत्रुघ्ने लक्ष्मणानुजे ।
प्राग्द्वारे ऽभूत्तदा कुब्जा सर्वाभरणभूषिता ॥५॥
5. iti saṃbhāṣamāṇe tu śatrughne lakṣmaṇānuje ,
prāgdvāre'bhūttadā kubjā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā.

5. Indeed, while Satrughna, the younger brother of Lakshmana, was speaking thus, at that very moment, Kubja appeared at the eastern gate, adorned with all her ornaments.
लिप्ता चन्दनसारेण राजवस्त्राणि बिभ्रती ।
मेखला दामभिश्चित्रै रज्जुबद्धेव वानरी ॥६॥
6. liptā candanasāreṇa rājavastrāṇi bibhratī ,
mekhalā dāmabhiścitrai rajjubaddheva vānarī.

6. Smeared with sandalwood paste and wearing royal garments, she was like a female monkey tied up with various colorful girdles and ropes.
तां समीक्ष्य तदा द्वाःस्थो भृशं पापस्य कारिणीम् ।
गृहीत्वाकरुणं कुब्जां शत्रुघ्नाय न्यवेदयत् ॥७॥
7. tāṃ samīkṣya tadā dvāḥstho bhṛśaṃ pāpasya kāriṇīm ,
gṛhītvākaruṇaṃ kubjāṃ śatrughnāya nyavedayat.
7. tām samīkṣya tadā dvāḥsthaḥ bhṛśam pāpasya kāriṇīm
gṛhītvā akaruṇam kubjām śatrughnāya nyavedayat
7. tadā dvāḥsthaḥ tām bhṛśam pāpasya kāriṇīm samīkṣya

7. Then the doorkeeper, seeing her, who was greatly responsible for the evil, seized Kubja mercilessly and reported her to Satrughna.
यस्याः कृते वने रामो न्यस्तदेहश्च वः पिता ।
सेयं पापा नृशंसा च तस्याः कुरु यथामति ॥८॥
8. yasyāḥ kṛte vane rāmo nyastadehaśca vaḥ pitā ,
seyaṃ pāpā nṛśaṃsā ca tasyāḥ kuru yathāmati.
8. yasyāḥ kṛte vane rāmaḥ nyastadehaḥ ca vaḥ pitā
sā iyam pāpā nṛśaṃsā ca tasyāḥ kuru yathāmati
8. sā iyam yasyāḥ kṛte rāmaḥ vane vaḥ pitā ca
nyastadehaḥ pāpā ca nṛśaṃsā tasyāḥ yathāmati kuru
8. She, for whose sake Rama went to the forest, and because of whom your father laid down his body, that sinful and cruel woman - deal with her as you deem appropriate.
शत्रुघ्नश्च तदाज्ञाय वचनं भृशदुःखितः ।
अन्तःपुरचरान् सर्वानित्युवाच धृतव्रतः ॥९॥
9. śatrughnaśca tadājñāya vacanaṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ,
antaḥpuracarān sarvānityuvāca dhṛtavrataḥ.
9. śatrughnaḥ ca tat ājñāya vacanam bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
antaḥpuracarān sarvān iti uvāca dhṛtavrataḥ
9. ca śatrughnaḥ tat vacanam ājñāya bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
dhṛtavrataḥ sarvān antaḥpuracarān iti uvāca
9. And Shatrughna, having understood that matter and being deeply distressed, thus spoke to all the attendants of the inner palace, he who was firm in his resolve.
तीव्रमुत्पादितं दुःखं भ्रातॄणां मे तथा पितुः ।
यया सेयं नृशंसस्य कर्मणः फलमश्नुताम् ॥१०॥
10. tīvramutpāditaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhrātṝṇāṃ me tathā pituḥ ,
yayā seyaṃ nṛśaṃsasya karmaṇaḥ phalamaśnutām.
10. tīvram utpāditam duḥkham bhrātṝṇām me tathā pituḥ
yayā sā iyam nṛśaṃsasya karmaṇaḥ phalam aśnutām
10. yayā me bhrātṝṇām tathā pituḥ tīvram duḥkham
utpāditam sā iyam nṛśaṃsasya karmaṇaḥ phalam aśnutām
10. Let her, by whom such intense sorrow was inflicted upon my brothers and my father, experience the fruit of that cruel action (karma).
एवमुक्ता च तेनाशु सखी जनसमावृता ।
गृहीता बलवत् कुब्जा सा तद्गृहमनादयत् ॥११॥
11. evamuktā ca tenāśu sakhī janasamāvṛtā ,
gṛhītā balavat kubjā sā tadgṛhamanādayat.
11. evam uktā ca tena āśu sakhī janasamāvṛtā
gṛhītā balavat kubjā sā tat gṛham anādayat
11. ca tena evam uktā sā kubjā sakhī janasamāvṛtā
āśu balavat gṛhītā tat gṛham anādayat
11. And thus addressed by him, that hunchbacked woman, a female companion, surrounded by people, was quickly seized forcibly, and she made that house resound (with her cries).
ततः सुभृश संतप्तस्तस्याः सर्वः सखीजनः ।
क्रुद्धमाज्ञाय शत्रुघ्नं व्यपलायत सर्वशः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ subhṛśa saṃtaptastasyāḥ sarvaḥ sakhījanaḥ ,
kruddhamājñāya śatrughnaṃ vyapalāyata sarvaśaḥ.
12. tataḥ subhṛśa saṃtaptaḥ tasyāḥ sarvaḥ sakhījanaḥ
kruddham ājñāya śatrughnam vyapalāyata sarvaśaḥ
12. tataḥ tasyāḥ sarvaḥ sakhījanaḥ subhṛśa saṃtaptaḥ
śatrughnam kruddham ājñāya sarvaśaḥ vyapalāyata
12. Then, all of her companions, greatly distressed, realizing that Śatrughna was enraged, fled in all directions.
अमन्त्रयत कृत्स्नश्च तस्याः सर्वसखीजनः ।
यथायं समुपक्रान्तो निःशेषं नः करिष्यति ॥१३॥
13. amantrayata kṛtsnaśca tasyāḥ sarvasakhījanaḥ ,
yathāyaṃ samupakrānto niḥśeṣaṃ naḥ kariṣyati.
13. amantrayata kṛtsnaḥ ca tasyāḥ sarvasakhījanaḥ
yathā ayam samupakrāntaḥ niḥśeṣam naḥ kariṣyati
13. tasyāḥ kṛtsnaḥ sarvasakhījanaḥ ca amantrayata
yathā ayam samupakrāntaḥ naḥ niḥśeṣam kariṣyati
13. And all of her companions deliberated, [thinking] that this one (Śatrughna), having commenced [his action], would utterly destroy us.
सानुक्रोशां वदान्यां च धर्मज्ञां च यशस्विनीम् ।
कौसल्यां शरणं यामः सा हि नो ऽस्तु ध्रुवा गतिः ॥१४॥
14. sānukrośāṃ vadānyāṃ ca dharmajñāṃ ca yaśasvinīm ,
kausalyāṃ śaraṇaṃ yāmaḥ sā hi no'stu dhruvā gatiḥ.
14. sānukrośām vadānyām ca dharmajñām ca yaśasvinīm
kausalyām śaraṇam yāmaḥ sā hi naḥ astu dhruvā gatiḥ
14. sānukrośām vadānyām ca dharmajñām ca yaśasvinīm
kausalyām śaraṇam yāmaḥ hi sā naḥ dhruvā gatiḥ astu
14. Let us go for refuge to Kausalya, who is compassionate, generous, knowledgeable in natural law (dharma), and renowned. For she will indeed be our sure and constant resort.
स च रोषेण ताम्राक्षः शत्रुघ्नः शत्रुतापनः ।
विचकर्ष तदा कुब्जां क्रोशन्तीं पृथिवीतले ॥१५॥
15. sa ca roṣeṇa tāmrākṣaḥ śatrughnaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ ,
vicakarṣa tadā kubjāṃ krośantīṃ pṛthivītale.
15. saḥ ca roṣeṇa tāmrākṣaḥ śatrughnaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ
vicakarṣa tadā kubjām krośantīm pṛthivītale

15. And Śatrughna, whose eyes were red with anger and who was a tormentor of enemies, then dragged the screaming hunchback along the ground.
तस्या ह्याकृष्यमाणाया मन्थरायास्ततस्ततः ।
चित्रं बहुविधं भाण्डं पृथिव्यां तद्व्यशीर्यत ॥१६॥
16. tasyā hyākṛṣyamāṇāyā mantharāyāstatastataḥ ,
citraṃ bahuvidhaṃ bhāṇḍaṃ pṛthivyāṃ tadvyaśīryata.
16. tasyāḥ hi ākṛṣyamāṇāyāḥ mantharāyāḥ tataḥ tataḥ
citram bahuvidham bhāṇḍam pṛthivyām tat vyaśīryata
16. hi ākṛṣyamāṇāyāḥ tataḥ tataḥ tasyāḥ mantharāyāḥ
citram bahuvidham bhāṇḍam tat pṛthivyām vyaśīryata
16. Indeed, as Mantharā was being dragged hither and thither, her strange and varied belongings scattered on the ground.
तेन भाण्डेन संकीर्णं श्रीमद्राजनिवेशनम् ।
अशोभत तदा भूयः शारदं गगनं यथा ॥१७॥
17. tena bhāṇḍena saṃkīrṇaṃ śrīmadrājaniveśanam ,
aśobhata tadā bhūyaḥ śāradaṃ gaganaṃ yathā.
17. tena bhāṇḍena saṃkīrṇam śrīmat rāja-niveśanam
aśobhata tadā bhūyaḥ śāradam gaganam yathā
17. tadā tena bhāṇḍena saṃkīrṇam śrīmat rāja-niveśanam

17. Then, the glorious royal palace, covered with those scattered belongings, shone even more beautifully, like an autumn sky.
स बली बलवत् क्रोधाद्गृहीत्वा पुरुषर्षभः ।
कैकेयीमभिनिर्भर्त्स्य बभाषे परुषं वचः ॥१८॥
18. sa balī balavat krodhādgṛhītvā puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
kaikeyīmabhinirbhartsya babhāṣe paruṣaṃ vacaḥ.
18. saḥ balī balavat krodhāt gṛhītvā puruṣarṣabhaḥ
kaikeyīm abhinirbhartsya babhāṣe paruṣam vacaḥ
18. saḥ balī puruṣarṣabhaḥ balavat krodhāt gṛhītvā
kaikeyīm abhinirbhartsya paruṣam vacaḥ babhāṣe
18. That mighty, best among men, seized her in great anger, and having harshly rebuked Kaikeyī, he spoke harsh words.
तैर्वाक्यैः परुषैर्दुःखैः कैकेयी भृशदुःखिता ।
शत्रुघ्न भयसंत्रस्ता पुत्रं शरणमागता ॥१९॥
19. tairvākyaiḥ paruṣairduḥkhaiḥ kaikeyī bhṛśaduḥkhitā ,
śatrughna bhayasaṃtrastā putraṃ śaraṇamāgatā.
19. taiḥ vākyaiḥ paruṣaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ kaikeyī bhṛśa-duḥkhitā
śatrughna-bhaya-saṃtrastā putram śaraṇam āgatā
19. taiḥ paruṣaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ vākyaiḥ bhṛśa-duḥkhitā
śatrughna-bhaya-saṃtrastā kaikeyī putram śaraṇam āgatā
19. Kaikeyī, greatly distressed and utterly terrified by those harsh, painful words (spoken by Shatrughna), sought refuge with her son.
तां प्रेक्ष्य भरतः क्रुद्धं शत्रुघ्नमिदमब्रवीत् ।
अवध्याः सर्वभूतानां प्रमदाः क्षम्यतामिति ॥२०॥
20. tāṃ prekṣya bharataḥ kruddhaṃ śatrughnamidamabravīt ,
avadhyāḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ pramadāḥ kṣamyatāmiti.
20. tām prekṣya bharataḥ kruddham śatrughnam idam
abravīt avadhyāḥ sarvabhūtānām pramadāḥ kṣamyatām iti
20. bharataḥ tām prekṣya kruddham śatrughnam idam
abravīt pramadāḥ sarvabhūtānām avadhyāḥ kṣamyatām iti
20. Bharata, seeing the enraged Shatrughna, said this: "Women are not to be killed by any living being; therefore, she should be forgiven."
हन्यामहमिमां पापां कैकेयीं दुष्टचारिणीम् ।
यदि मां धार्मिको रामो नासूयेन्मातृघातकम् ॥२१॥
21. hanyāmahamimāṃ pāpāṃ kaikeyīṃ duṣṭacāriṇīm ,
yadi māṃ dhārmiko rāmo nāsūyenmātṛghātakam.
21. hanyām aham imām pāpām kaikeyīm duṣṭacāriṇīm
yadi mām dhārmikaḥ rāmaḥ na asūyet mātṛghātakam
21. aham imām pāpām duṣṭacāriṇīm kaikeyīm hanyām
yadi dhārmikaḥ rāmaḥ mātṛghātakam mām na asūyet
21. "I would certainly kill this sinful Kaikeyi, who has behaved wickedly, if the righteous Rama would not condemn me for being a mother-killer."
इमामपि हतां कुब्जां यदि जानाति राघवः ।
त्वां च मां चैव धर्मात्मा नाभिभाषिष्यते ध्रुवम् ॥२२॥
22. imāmapi hatāṃ kubjāṃ yadi jānāti rāghavaḥ ,
tvāṃ ca māṃ caiva dharmātmā nābhibhāṣiṣyate dhruvam.
22. imām api hatām kubjām yadi jānāti rāghavaḥ tvām
ca mām ca eva dharmātmā na abhibhāṣiṣyate dhruvam
22. yadi dharmātmā rāghavaḥ imām kubjām hatām api
jānāti tvām ca mām ca eva dhruvam na abhibhāṣiṣyate
22. "If Rama (Raghava), the virtuous one, learns that this hunchback (Kubja) has been killed, then he will certainly not speak to either you or me."
भरतस्य वचः श्रुत्वा शत्रुघ्नो लक्ष्मणानुजः ।
न्यवर्तत ततो रोषात्तां मुमोच च मन्थराम् ॥२३॥
23. bharatasya vacaḥ śrutvā śatrughno lakṣmaṇānujaḥ ,
nyavartata tato roṣāttāṃ mumoca ca mantharām.
23. bharatasya vacaḥ śrutvā śatrughnaḥ lakṣmaṇānujaḥ
nyavartata tataḥ roṣāt tām mumoca ca mantharām

23. Hearing Bharata's words, Shatrughna, Lakshmana's younger brother, then desisted from his rage and released Manthara.
सा पादमूले कैकेय्या मन्थरा निपपात ह ।
निःश्वसन्ती सुदुःखार्ता कृपणं विललाप च ॥२४॥
24. sā pādamūle kaikeyyā mantharā nipapāta ha ,
niḥśvasantī suduḥkhārtā kṛpaṇaṃ vilalāpa ca.
24. sā pādamūle kaikeyyā mantharā nipapāta ha
niḥśvasantī sudukhārtā kṛpaṇam vilalāpa ca

24. Manthara fell at Kaikeyi's feet. Sighing and greatly afflicted by sorrow, she wailed pitiably.
शत्रुघ्नविक्षेपविमूढसंज्ञां समीक्ष्य कुब्जां भरतस्य माता ।
शनैः समाश्वासयदार्तरूपां क्रौञ्चीं विलग्नामिव वीक्षमाणाम् ॥२५॥
25. śatrughnavikṣepavimūḍhasaṃjñāṃ samīkṣya kubjāṃ bharatasya mātā ,
śanaiḥ samāśvāsayadārtarūpāṃ krauñcīṃ vilagnāmiva vīkṣamāṇām.

25. Seeing the hunchback (Manthara) – whose consciousness was bewildered by Shatrughna's assault, and who appeared distressed, looking like a female heron that had been struck – Bharata's mother gently consoled her.
