सा सीता तच्छिरो दृष्ट्वा तच्च कार्मुकमुत्तमम् ।
सुग्रीवप्रतिसंसर्गमाख्यातं च हनूमता ॥१॥
1. sā sītā tacchiro dṛṣṭvā tacca kārmukamuttamam ,
sugrīvapratisaṃsargamākhyātaṃ ca hanūmatā.

Sugrīva-pratisamsargam ākhyātam ca Hanūmatā
1. sā Sītā tat śiraḥ ca tat uttamam kārmukam dṛṣṭvā,
ca Hanūmatā ākhyātam Sugrīva-pratisamsargam (smarantī) (abhavat).
1. She, Sītā, seeing that head and that excellent bow, and recalling the message about reunion with Sugrīva (that had been) told by Hanūmān.
नयने मुखवर्णं च भर्तुस्तत् सदृशं मुखम् ।
केशान् केशान्तदेशं च तं च चूडामणिं शुभम् ॥२॥
2. nayane mukhavarṇaṃ ca bhartustat sadṛśaṃ mukham ,
keśān keśāntadeśaṃ ca taṃ ca cūḍāmaṇiṃ śubham.
2. nayane mukhavarṇam ca bhartuḥ tat sadṛśam mukham
keśān keśāntadeśam ca tam ca cūḍāmaṇim śubham

2. She recognized his two eyes, the complexion of his face, and that very face of her husband; and his hair, his hairline, and that auspicious crest-jewel.
एतैः सर्वैरभिज्ञानैरभिज्ञाय सुदुःखिता ।
विजगर्हे ऽथ कैकेयीं क्रोशन्ती कुररी यथा ॥३॥
3. etaiḥ sarvairabhijñānairabhijñāya suduḥkhitā ,
vijagarhe'tha kaikeyīṃ krośantī kurarī yathā.
3. etaiḥ sarvaiḥ abhijñānaiḥ abhijñāya suduḥkhitā
vijagarhe atha kaikeyīm krośantī kurarī yathā

3. Having recognized (them) by all these signs, she, greatly distressed, then reproached Kaikeyī, crying out like a curlew.
सकामा भव कैकेयि हतो ऽयं कुलनन्दनः ।
कुलमुत्सादितं सर्वं त्वया कलहशीलया ॥४॥
4. sakāmā bhava kaikeyi hato'yaṃ kulanandanaḥ ,
kulamutsāditaṃ sarvaṃ tvayā kalahaśīlayā.
4. sakāmā bhava kaikeyī hataḥ ayam kulanandanaḥ
kulam utsāditam sarvam tvayā kalahaśīlayā
4. kaikeyī sakāmā bhava ayam kulanandanaḥ hataḥ

4. Be content, O Kaikeyī, for this delight of our family is destroyed! The entire lineage has been ruined by you, the quarrelsome one.
आर्येण किं नु कैकेय्याः कृतं रामेण विप्रियम् ।
यद्गृहाच्चीरवसनस्तया प्रस्थापितो वनम् ॥५॥
5. āryeṇa kiṃ nu kaikeyyāḥ kṛtaṃ rāmeṇa vipriyam ,
yadgṛhāccīravasanastayā prasthāpito vanam.

5. What disagreeable thing was indeed done by the noble Rama for Kaikeyī, that he, clad in bark garments, was banished from home to the forest by her?
एवमुक्त्वा तु वैदेही वेपमाना तपस्विनी ।
जगाम जगतीं बाला छिन्ना तु कदली यथा ॥६॥
6. evamuktvā tu vaidehī vepamānā tapasvinī ,
jagāma jagatīṃ bālā chinnā tu kadalī yathā.
6. evam uktvā tu vaidehī vepamānā tapasvinī
jagāma jagatīm bālā chinnā tu kadalī yathā
6. vaidehī bālā tapasvinī vepamānā evam uktvā

6. Having spoken thus, the young Vaidehi, trembling and appearing like an ascetic in her suffering, fell to the ground, just like a severed banana tree.
सा मुहूर्तात् समाश्वस्य प्रतिलभ्य च चेतनाम् ।
तच्छिरः समुपाघ्राय विललापायतेक्षणा ॥७॥
7. sā muhūrtāt samāśvasya pratilabhya ca cetanām ,
tacchiraḥ samupāghrāya vilalāpāyatekṣaṇā.

tat śiraḥ samupāghrāya vilalāpa āyatekṣaṇā

7. After a moment, having regained her composure and recovered consciousness, she, the long-eyed one, kissed his head and then lamented.
हा हतास्मि महाबाहो वीरव्रतमनुव्रता ।
इमां ते पश्चिमावस्थां गतास्मि विधवा कृता ॥८॥
8. hā hatāsmi mahābāho vīravratamanuvratā ,
imāṃ te paścimāvasthāṃ gatāsmi vidhavā kṛtā.
8. hā hatā asmi mahābāho vīravratam anuvratā imām
te paścimām avasthām gatā asmi vidhavā kṛtā
8. hā mahābāho,
vīravratam anuvratā asmi,
hatā asmi.
te imām paścimām avasthām gatā asmi,
vidhavā kṛtā.
8. Alas, I am undone, O mighty-armed one, I who was devoted to your warrior's code! I have now reached this final state of yours, made a widow.
प्रथमं मरणं नार्या भर्तुर्वैगुण्यमुच्यते ।
सुवृत्तः साधुवृत्तायाः संवृत्तस्त्वं ममाग्रतः ॥९॥
9. prathamaṃ maraṇaṃ nāryā bharturvaiguṇyamucyate ,
suvṛttaḥ sādhuvṛttāyāḥ saṃvṛttastvaṃ mamāgrataḥ.
9. prathamam maraṇam nāryāḥ bhartuḥ vaiguṇyam ucyate
suvṛttaḥ sādhuvṛttāyāḥ saṃvṛttaḥ tvam mama agrataḥ
9. nāryāḥ prathamam maraṇam bhartuḥ vaiguṇyam ucyate.
tvam suvṛttaḥ,
sādhuvṛttāyāḥ mama agrataḥ saṃvṛttaḥ.
9. It is said that for a woman, the demise of her husband is her primary death. And you, the virtuous one, have passed away before my very eyes, me being a woman of virtue.
दुःखाद्दुःखं प्रपन्नाया मग्नायाः शोकसागरे ।
यो हि मामुद्यतस्त्रातुं सो ऽपि त्वं विनिपातितः ॥१०॥
10. duḥkhādduḥkhaṃ prapannāyā magnāyāḥ śokasāgare ,
yo hi māmudyatastrātuṃ so'pi tvaṃ vinipātitaḥ.
10. duḥkhāt duḥkham prapannāyāḥ magnāyāḥ śoka-sāgare
yaḥ hi mām udyataḥ trātum saḥ api tvam vinipātitaḥ
10. duḥkhāt duḥkham prapannāyāḥ śoka-sāgare magnāyāḥ
mām hi yaḥ trātum udyataḥ saḥ tvam api vinipātitaḥ
10. I, who have fallen from one sorrow to another, immersed in an ocean of grief – even you, who were prepared to rescue me, have been struck down.
सा श्वश्रूर्मम कौसल्या त्वया पुत्रेण राघव ।
वत्सेनेव यथा धेनुर्विवत्सा वत्सला कृता ॥११॥
11. sā śvaśrūrmama kausalyā tvayā putreṇa rāghava ,
vatseneva yathā dhenurvivatsā vatsalā kṛtā.
11. sā śvaśrūḥ mama kausalyā tvayā putreṇa rāghava
vatsena iva yathā dhenuḥ vivatsā vatsalā kṛtā
11. rāghava tvayā putreṇa sā mama śvaśrūḥ kausalyā
vivatsā vatsalā kṛtā yathā dhenuḥ vatsena iva
11. That mother-in-law of mine, Kausalya, has been made without her calf – affectionate yet separated – by you, her son, O Raghava, just as a cow is separated from its own calf.
आदिष्टं दीर्घमायुस्ते यैरचिन्त्यपराक्रम ।
अनृतं वचनं तेषामल्पायुरसि राघव ॥१२॥
12. ādiṣṭaṃ dīrghamāyuste yairacintyaparākrama ,
anṛtaṃ vacanaṃ teṣāmalpāyurasi rāghava.
12. ādiṣṭam dīrgham āyuḥ te yaiḥ acintya-parākrama
anṛtam vacanam teṣām alpa-āyuḥ asi rāghava
12. acintya-parākrama rāghava yaiḥ te dīrgham āyuḥ
ādiṣṭam teṣām vacanam anṛtam tvam alpa-āyuḥ asi
12. O Raghava, whose prowess is inconceivable (acintya-parākrama), those who predicted a long life for you – their words have proven false. You are destined to be short-lived!
अथ वा नश्यति प्रज्ञा प्राज्ञस्यापि सतस्तव ।
पचत्येनं तथा कालो भूतानां प्रभवो ह्ययम् ॥१३॥
13. atha vā naśyati prajñā prājñasyāpi satastava ,
pacatyenaṃ tathā kālo bhūtānāṃ prabhavo hyayam.
13. atha vā naśyati prajñā prājñasya api sataḥ tava
pacati enam tathā kālaḥ bhūtānām prabhavaḥ hi ayam
13. atha vā prājñasya api sataḥ tava prajñā naśyati
tathā kālaḥ enam pacati hi ayam bhūtānām prabhavaḥ
13. Or perhaps, even the intelligence (prajñā) of you, who are wise, perishes; for thus time (kāla) devours him, and indeed, this (kāla) is the origin of all beings.
अदृष्टं मृत्युमापन्नः कस्मात्त्वं नयशास्त्रवित् ।
व्यसनानामुपायज्ञः कुशलो ह्यसि वर्जने ॥१४॥
14. adṛṣṭaṃ mṛtyumāpannaḥ kasmāttvaṃ nayaśāstravit ,
vyasanānāmupāyajñaḥ kuśalo hyasi varjane.
14. adṛṣṭam mṛtyum āpannaḥ kasmāt tvam nayaśāstravit
vyasanānām upāyajñaḥ kuśalaḥ hi asi varjane
14. tvam nayaśāstravit vyasanānām upāyajñaḥ varjane
kuśalaḥ hi asi kasmāt adṛṣṭam mṛtyum āpannaḥ
14. O you who are skilled in ethics (nayaśāstra), knowledgeable about remedies for misfortunes, and indeed adept at avoiding them, why have you met an unseen death?
तथा त्वं संपरिष्वज्य रौद्रयातिनृशंसया ।
कालरात्र्या मयाच्छिद्य हृतः कमललोचनः ॥१५॥
15. tathā tvaṃ saṃpariṣvajya raudrayātinṛśaṃsayā ,
kālarātryā mayācchidya hṛtaḥ kamalalocanaḥ.
15. tathā tvam samparīṣvajya raudrayā atinṛśaṃsayā
kālarātryā mayā acchidya hṛtaḥ kamalalocanaḥ
15. tathā kamalalocanaḥ tvam raudrayā atinṛśaṃsayā
kālarātryā samparīṣvajya mayā acchidya hṛtaḥ
15. Thus, O lotus-eyed one, having been embraced by the terrible and extremely cruel night of destruction (kālarātri), you have been snatched away, leaving me severed (from you).
उपशेषे महाबाहो मां विहाय तपस्विनीम् ।
प्रियामिव शुभां नारीं पृथिवीं पुरुषर्षभ ॥१६॥
16. upaśeṣe mahābāho māṃ vihāya tapasvinīm ,
priyāmiva śubhāṃ nārīṃ pṛthivīṃ puruṣarṣabha.
16. upaśeṣe mahābāho mām vihāya tapasvinīm priyām
iva śubhām nārīm pṛthivīm puruṣarṣabha
16. mahābāho puruṣarṣabha mām tapasvinīm vihāya
tvam priyām śubhām nārīm iva pṛthivīm upaśeṣe
16. O mighty-armed one, O best of men (puruṣarṣabha), having abandoned me, your ascetic (tapasvinī) beloved, you lie upon the earth as if she were a beautiful, auspicious woman.
अर्चितं सततं यत्नाद्गन्धमाल्यैर्मया तव ।
इदं ते मत्प्रियं वीर धनुः काञ्चनभूषितम् ॥१७॥
17. arcitaṃ satataṃ yatnādgandhamālyairmayā tava ,
idaṃ te matpriyaṃ vīra dhanuḥ kāñcanabhūṣitam.
17. arcitam satatam yatnāt gandhamālyaiḥ mayā tava
idam te matpriyam vīra dhanuḥ kāñcanabhūṣitam
17. vīra idam te matpriyam kāñcanabhūṣitam dhanuḥ
mayā gandhamālyaiḥ satatam yatnāt arcitam
17. O hero, this golden-adorned bow of yours, which is dear to me and was constantly and carefully worshipped by me with perfumes and garlands (gandha-mālya).
पित्रा दशरथेन त्वं श्वशुरेण ममानघ ।
पूर्वैश्च पितृभिः सार्धं नूनं स्वर्गे समागतः ॥१८॥
18. pitrā daśarathena tvaṃ śvaśureṇa mamānagha ,
pūrvaiśca pitṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ nūnaṃ svarge samāgataḥ.
18. pitrā daśarathena tvam śvaśureṇa mama anagha
pūrvaiḥ ca pitṛbhiḥ sārdham nūnam svarge samāgataḥ
18. anagha tvam mama śvaśureṇa pitrā daśarathena ca
pūrvaiḥ pitṛbhiḥ sārdham nūnam svarge samāgataḥ
18. O sinless one, you have surely gone to heaven, joining your father Daśaratha, who is also my father-in-law, and all your ancestors.
दिवि नक्षत्रभूतस्त्वं महत् कर्म कृतं प्रियम् ।
पुण्यं राजर्षिवंशं त्वमात्मनः समुपेक्षसे ॥१९॥
19. divi nakṣatrabhūtastvaṃ mahat karma kṛtaṃ priyam ,
puṇyaṃ rājarṣivaṃśaṃ tvamātmanaḥ samupekṣase.
19. divi nakṣatrabhūtaḥ tvam mahat karma kṛtam priyam
puṇyam rājarṣivaṃśam tvam ātmanaḥ samupeksase
19. tvam divi nakṣatrabhūtaḥ mahat priyam karma kṛtam.
tvam ātmanaḥ puṇyam rājarṣivaṃśam samupeksase.
19. You, who have become a star in the heavens, have performed a great and cherished act. Yet, you neglect your own sacred lineage of royal sages (rājarṣi).
किं मान्न प्रेक्षसे राजन् किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ।
बालां बालेन संप्राप्तां भार्यां मां सहचारिणीम् ॥२०॥
20. kiṃ mānna prekṣase rājan kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase ,
bālāṃ bālena saṃprāptāṃ bhāryāṃ māṃ sahacāriṇīm.
20. kim mām na prekṣase rājan kim mām na pratibhāṣase
bālām bālena samprāptām bhāryām mām sahacāriṇīm
20. rājan,
kim mām na prekṣase? kim mām na pratibhāṣase? (tvam) bālām bālena samprāptām sahacāriṇīm bhāryām mām (na prekṣase,
na pratibhāṣase).
20. Why do you not look at me, O king? Why do you not speak to me? I am your young wife, whom a young man (you) attained, and who has been your constant companion.
संश्रुतं गृह्णता पाणिं चरिष्यामीति यत्त्वया ।
स्मर तन्मम काकुत्स्थ नय मामपि दुःखिताम् ॥२१॥
21. saṃśrutaṃ gṛhṇatā pāṇiṃ cariṣyāmīti yattvayā ,
smara tanmama kākutstha naya māmapi duḥkhitām.
21. saṃśrutam gṛhṇatā pāṇim cariṣyāmi iti yat tvayā
smara tat mama kākutstha naya mām api duḥkhitām
21. kākutstha,
yat tvayā pāṇim gṛhṇatā "cariṣyāmi" iti saṃśrutam,
tat smara.
mām api duḥkhitām naya.
21. O descendant of Kakutstha (kākutstha), remember the pledge you made while taking my hand, 'I shall accompany you.' Take me, who is also distressed, along with you.
कस्मान्मामपहाय त्वं गतो गतिमतां वर ।
अस्माल् लोकादमुं लोकं त्यक्त्वा मामिह दुःखिताम् ॥२२॥
22. kasmānmāmapahāya tvaṃ gato gatimatāṃ vara ,
asmāl lokādamuṃ lokaṃ tyaktvā māmiha duḥkhitām.
22. kasmāt mām apahāya tvam gataḥ gatimatām vara
asmāt lokāt amum lokam tyaktvā mām iha duḥkhitām
22. O foremost among those who journey, why have you departed from this world to that other world, abandoning me, who is distressed here?
कल्याणैरुचितं यत्तत् परिष्वक्तं मयैव तु ।
क्रव्यादैस्तच्छरीरं ते नूनं विपरिकृष्यते ॥२३॥
23. kalyāṇairucitaṃ yattat pariṣvaktaṃ mayaiva tu ,
kravyādaistaccharīraṃ te nūnaṃ viparikṛṣyate.
23. kalyāṇaiḥ ucitam yat tat pariṣvaktam mayā eva tu
kravyādaiḥ tat śarīram te nūnam viparikṛṣyate
23. That very body of yours, which was properly adorned by me with auspicious things, is now certainly being torn apart by carnivores.
अग्निष्टोमादिभिर्यज्ञैरिष्टवानाप्तदक्षिणैः ।
अग्निहोत्रेण संस्कारं केन त्वं तु न लप्स्यसे ॥२४॥
24. agniṣṭomādibhiryajñairiṣṭavānāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ,
agnihotreṇa saṃskāraṃ kena tvaṃ tu na lapsyase.
24. agniṣṭomādibhiḥ yajñaiḥ iṣṭavān āptadakṣiṇaiḥ
agnihotreṇa saṃskāram kena tvam tu na lapsyase
24. You, who performed Vedic rituals (yajñas) such as the Agniṣṭoma, along with appropriate sacrificial fees, by what means will you not attain the purificatory rite (saṃskāra) of the Agnihotra?
प्रव्रज्यामुपपन्नानां त्रयाणामेकमागतम् ।
परिप्रक्ष्यति कौसल्या लक्ष्मणं शोकलालसा ॥२५॥
25. pravrajyāmupapannānāṃ trayāṇāmekamāgatam ,
pariprakṣyati kausalyā lakṣmaṇaṃ śokalālasā.
25. pravrajyām upapannānām trayāṇām ekam āgatam
pariprakṣyati kausalyā lakṣmaṇam śokalālasā
25. Kausalyā, consumed by sorrow, will thoroughly question Lakṣmaṇa, who has returned as the sole one of the three who embarked upon the ascetic's life (pravrajyā).
स तस्याः परिपृच्छन्त्या वधं मित्रबलस्य ते ।
तव चाख्यास्यते नूनं निशायां राक्षसैर्वधम् ॥२६॥
26. sa tasyāḥ paripṛcchantyā vadhaṃ mitrabalasya te ,
tava cākhyāsyate nūnaṃ niśāyāṃ rākṣasairvadham.
26. saḥ tasyāḥ paripṛcchantyāḥ vadham mitrabalasya te
tava ca ākhyāsyate nūnam niśāyām rākṣasaiḥ vadham
26. saḥ tasyāḥ paripṛcchantyāḥ te mitrabalasya vadham
ca tava vadham rākṣasaiḥ niśāyām nūnam ākhyāsyate
26. He (a messenger) will surely inform her (Rāma's mother), who will be inquiring, about the destruction of your (Rāma's) allied army, and also your (Rāma's) own demise at the hands of the (rākṣasas) during the night.
सा त्वां सुप्तं हतं श्रुत्वा मां च रक्षोगृहं गताम् ।
हृदयेन विदीर्णेन न भविष्यति राघव ॥२७॥
27. sā tvāṃ suptaṃ hataṃ śrutvā māṃ ca rakṣogṛhaṃ gatām ,
hṛdayena vidīrṇena na bhaviṣyati rāghava.
27. sā tvām suptam hatam śrutvā mām ca rakṣogṛham
gatām hṛdayena vidīrṇena na bhaviṣyati rāghava
27. rāghava,
sā tvām suptam hatam ca mām rakṣogṛham gatām śrutvā vidīrṇena hṛdayena na bhaviṣyati
27. O (Rāghava), having heard that you are killed while sleeping, and that I have gone to the house of the (rākṣasas), she (your mother) will surely not survive, her heart shattered.
साधु पातय मां क्षिप्रं रामस्योपरि रावणः ।
समानय पतिं पत्न्या कुरु कल्याणमुत्तमम् ॥२८॥
28. sādhu pātaya māṃ kṣipraṃ rāmasyopari rāvaṇaḥ ,
samānaya patiṃ patnyā kuru kalyāṇamuttamam.
28. sādhu pātaya mām kṣipram rāmasya upari rāvaṇa
samānaya patim patnyā kuru kalyāṇam uttamam
28. rāvaṇa,
sādhu mām ramāsya upari kṣipram pātaya patnyā patim samānaya uttamam kalyāṇam kuru
28. O (Rāvaṇa), quickly throw me upon (Rāma)! Unite the husband with his wife. Perform this supreme auspicious act.
शिरसा मे शिरश्चास्य कायं कायेन योजय ।
रावणानुगमिष्यामि गतिं भर्तुर्महात्मनः ।
मुहूर्तमपि नेच्छामि जीवितुं पापजीविना ॥२९॥
29. śirasā me śiraścāsya kāyaṃ kāyena yojaya ,
rāvaṇānugamiṣyāmi gatiṃ bharturmahātmanaḥ ,
muhūrtamapi necchāmi jīvituṃ pāpajīvinā.
29. śirasā me śiraḥ ca asya kāyam
kāyena yojaya rāvaṇa anugamiṣyāmi
gatim bhartuḥ mahātmanaḥ muhūrtam
api na icchāmi jīvitum pāpajīvinā
29. me śirasā asya śiraḥ ca kāyena kāyam yojaya rāvaṇa,
mahātmanaḥ bhartuḥ gatim anugamiṣyāmi muhūrtam api pāpajīvinā jīvitum na icchāmi
29. Join my head with his head, and my body with his body. O (Rāvaṇa), I shall follow the destiny of my great-souled husband. I do not wish to live even for a moment in the company of a sinful being.
श्रुतं मया वेदविदां ब्राह्मणानां पितुर्गृहे ।
यासां स्त्रीणां प्रियो भर्ता तासां लोका महोदयाः ॥३०॥
30. śrutaṃ mayā vedavidāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ piturgṛhe ,
yāsāṃ strīṇāṃ priyo bhartā tāsāṃ lokā mahodayāḥ.
30. śrutam mayā vedavidām brāhmaṇānām pituḥ gṛhe
yāsām strīṇām priyaḥ bhartā tāsām lokāḥ mahodayāḥ
30. mayā pituḥ gṛhe vedavidām brāhmaṇānām śrutam
yāsām strīṇām bhartā priyaḥ tāsām lokāḥ mahodayāḥ
30. I heard from the Brahmins who know the Vedas, in my father's house, that for those women whose husband is dear, their worlds (afterlife) are greatly prosperous.
क्षमा यस्मिन्दमस्त्यागः सत्यं धर्मः कृतज्ञता ।
अहिंसा चैव भूतानां तमृते का गतिर्मम ॥३१॥
31. kṣamā yasmindamastyāgaḥ satyaṃ dharmaḥ kṛtajñatā ,
ahiṃsā caiva bhūtānāṃ tamṛte kā gatirmama.

31. Without him, in whom are patience, self-control, generosity, truth, (natural law) (dharma), gratitude, and indeed non-violence towards all beings, what refuge do I have?
इति सा दुःखसंतप्ता विललापायतेक्षणा ।
भर्तुः शिरो धनुस्तत्र समीक्ष्य जनकात्मजा ॥३२॥
32. iti sā duḥkhasaṃtaptā vilalāpāyatekṣaṇā ,
bhartuḥ śiro dhanustatra samīkṣya janakātmajā.

32. Thus, Janaka's daughter, with long eyes, tormented by sorrow, lamented after seeing her husband's head and bow there.
एवं लालप्यमानायां सीतायां तत्र राक्षसः ।
अभिचक्राम भर्तारमनीकस्थः कृताञ्जलिः ॥३३॥
33. evaṃ lālapyamānāyāṃ sītāyāṃ tatra rākṣasaḥ ,
abhicakrāma bhartāramanīkasthaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ.

33. While Sītā was thus lamenting there, a Rākṣasa (demon) from the army, with folded hands, approached her husband.
विजयस्वार्यपुत्रेति सो ऽभिवाद्य प्रसाद्य च ।
न्यवेदयदनुप्राप्तं प्रहस्तं वाहिनीपतिम् ॥३४॥
34. vijayasvāryaputreti so'bhivādya prasādya ca ,
nyavedayadanuprāptaṃ prahastaṃ vāhinīpatim.

34. Having greeted and appeased him with the salutation "Be victorious, noble prince!", he reported the arrival of Prahasta, the commander of the army.
अमात्यैः सहितः सर्वैः प्रहस्तः समुपस्थितः ।
किं चिदात्ययिकं कार्यं तेषां त्वं दर्शनं कुरु ॥३५॥
35. amātyaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ prahastaḥ samupasthitaḥ ,
kiṃ cidātyayikaṃ kāryaṃ teṣāṃ tvaṃ darśanaṃ kuru.

35. Prahasta has arrived, accompanied by all his ministers. Since there is some urgent business concerning them, you should grant them an audience.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा दशग्रीवो राक्षसप्रतिवेदितम् ।
अशोकवनिकां त्यक्त्वा मन्त्रिणां दर्शनं ययौ ॥३६॥
36. etacchrutvā daśagrīvo rākṣasaprativeditam ,
aśokavanikāṃ tyaktvā mantriṇāṃ darśanaṃ yayau.

36. Having heard this report from the rākṣasa (demon), Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) left the Aśoka grove and went to meet with his ministers.
स तु सर्वं समर्थ्यैव मन्त्रिभिः कृत्यमात्मनः ।
सभां प्रविश्य विदधे विदित्वा रामविक्रमम् ॥३७॥
37. sa tu sarvaṃ samarthyaiva mantribhiḥ kṛtyamātmanaḥ ,
sabhāṃ praviśya vidadhe viditvā rāmavikramam.

37. But he, having fully deliberated with his ministers on all his own affairs, and having understood Rāma's prowess, then entered the assembly hall and made his arrangements.
अन्तर्धानं तु तच्छीर्षं तच्च कार्मुकमुत्तमम् ।
जगाम रावणस्यैव निर्याणसमनन्तरम् ॥३८॥
38. antardhānaṃ tu tacchīrṣaṃ tacca kārmukamuttamam ,
jagāma rāvaṇasyaiva niryāṇasamanantaram.

38. That head and that excellent bow vanished immediately after Rāvaṇa's death.
राक्षसेन्द्रस्तु तैः सार्धं मन्त्रिभिर्भीमविक्रमैः ।
समर्थयामास तदा रामकार्यविनिश्चयम् ॥३९॥
39. rākṣasendrastu taiḥ sārdhaṃ mantribhirbhīmavikramaiḥ ,
samarthayāmāsa tadā rāmakāryaviniścayam.

39. Then, the king of the rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), accompanied by those ministers of formidable prowess, deliberated on the decision concerning Rāma's task.
अविदूरस्थितान् सर्वान्बलाध्यक्षान् हितैषिणः ।
अब्रवीत् कालसदृशो रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ॥४०॥
40. avidūrasthitān sarvānbalādhyakṣān hitaiṣiṇaḥ ,
abravīt kālasadṛśo rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ.

40. Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rākṣasas, who was like (Kāla) Death himself, addressed all the commanders, his well-wishers, who were standing nearby.
शीघ्रं भेरीनिनादेन स्फुटकोणाहतेन मे ।
समानयध्वं सैन्यानि वक्तव्यं च न कारणम् ॥४१॥
41. śīghraṃ bherīninādena sphuṭakoṇāhatena me ,
samānayadhvaṃ sainyāni vaktavyaṃ ca na kāraṇam.

41. Quickly, assemble my troops with the resounding beat of drums, struck by distinct drumsticks. And no explanation (kāraṇam) is to be given.
ततस्तथेति प्रतिगृह्य तद्वचो बलाधिपास्ते महदात्मनो बलम् ।
समानयंश्चैव समागतं च ते न्यवेदयन्भर्तरि युद्धकाङ्क्षिणि ॥४२॥
42. tatastatheti pratigṛhya tadvaco balādhipāste mahadātmano balam ,
samānayaṃścaiva samāgataṃ ca te nyavedayanbhartari yuddhakāṅkṣiṇi.

42. Then, having accepted that command with the words 'so be it', those army commanders, after gathering their own large force and also the already assembled troops, reported to their lord, who was desirous of war.
