After staying that night there by the Gomati River, Lakṣmaṇa, the delight of the Raghus, rose again in the morning and then departed.
ततो ऽर्धदिवसे प्राप्ते प्रविवेश महारथः ।
अयोध्यां रत्नसंपूर्णां हृष्टपुष्टजनावृताम् ॥२॥

Then, when midday arrived, the great charioteer entered Ayodhya, which was entirely filled with jewels and bustling with joyful and prosperous people.
सौमित्रिस्तु परं दैन्यं जगाम सुमहामतिः ।
रामपादौ समासाद्य वक्ष्यामि किमहं गतः ॥३॥

3. saumitristu paraṃ dainyaṃ jagāma sumahāmatiḥ ,
rāmapādau samāsādya vakṣyāmi kimahaṃ gataḥ.

But Saumitri, the highly intelligent one, fell into great despair. Having approached Rāma's feet, what shall I, who has returned (without Sītā), say?
तस्यैवं चिन्तयानस्य भवनं शशिसंनिभम् ।
रामस्य परमोदारं पुरस्तात् समदृश्यत ॥४॥

While he (Saumitri) was thus pondering, Rāma's exceedingly grand palace, resplendent like the moon, appeared before him.
राज्ञस्तु भवनद्वारि सो ऽवतीर्य नरोत्तमः ।
अवाङ्मुखो दीनमनाः प्राविवेशानिवारितः ॥५॥

5. rājñastu bhavanadvāri so'vatīrya narottamaḥ ,

tu narottamaḥ saḥ rājñaḥ bhavana-dvāri avatīrya

But that best among men (Lakṣmaṇa), having dismounted at the palace gate of the king, entered unhindered, with his face downcast and his mind distressed.
स दृष्ट्वा राघवं दीनमासीनं परमासने ।
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां ददर्शाग्रजमग्रतः ॥६॥

Having seen Rāghava (Rāma) seated on a supreme throne, he (Lakṣmaṇa) beheld his elder brother before him, (Rāma's) eyes filled with tears and (Rāma) looking distressed.
जग्राह चरणौ तस्य लक्ष्मणो दीनचेतनः ।
उवाच दीनया वाचा प्राञ्जलिः सुसमाहितः ॥७॥

With a sorrowful heart, Lakṣmaṇa grasped his feet. With folded hands and a well-composed mind, he spoke in a humble voice.
आर्यस्याज्ञां पुरस्कृत्य विसृज्य जनकात्मजाम् ।
गङ्गातीरे यथोद्दिष्टे वाल्मीकेराश्रमे शुभे ।
पुनरस्म्यागतो वीर पादमूलमुपासितुम् ॥८॥
गङ्गातीरे यथोद्दिष्टे वाल्मीकेराश्रमे शुभे ।

8. āryasyājñāṃ puraskṛtya visṛjya janakātmajām ,
gaṅgātīre yathoddiṣṭe vālmīkerāśrame śubhe ,
punarasmyāgato vīra pādamūlamupāsitum.

8.
O hero, having carried out the command of the noble one, having left Janaka's daughter (Sītā) on the bank of the Gaṅgā, in the auspicious hermitage (āśrama) of Vālmīki, as was instructed, I have returned to serve at your feet.
मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र कालस्य गतिरीदृशी ।
त्वद्विधा न हि शोचन्ति सत्त्ववन्तो मनस्विनः ॥९॥

9. mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra kālasya gatirīdṛśī ,
tvadvidhā na hi śocanti sattvavanto manasvinaḥ.

O tiger among men, do not grieve! Such is the course of time. Indeed, courageous and high-minded persons like you do not lament.
सर्वे क्षयान्ता निचयाः पतनान्ताः समुच्छ्रयाः ।
संयोगा विप्रयोगान्ता मरणान्तं च जीवितम् ॥१०॥

10. sarve kṣayāntā nicayāḥ patanāntāḥ samucchrayāḥ ,
saṃyogā viprayogāntā maraṇāntaṃ ca jīvitam.

sarve nicayāḥ kṣaya-antāḥ samucchrayāḥ patana-antāḥ
saṃyogāḥ viprayoga-antāḥ ca jīvitam maraṇa-antam
saṃyogāḥ viprayoga-antāḥ ca jīvitam maraṇa-antam
10.
All accumulations end in decay, all elevations end in a fall. All unions (saṃyoga) end in separation, and life ends in death.
शक्तस्त्वमात्मनात्मानं विजेतुं मनसैव हि ।
लोकान् सर्वांश्च काकुत्स्थ किं पुनर्दुःखमीदृशम् ॥११॥

11. śaktastvamātmanātmānaṃ vijetuṃ manasaiva hi ,
lokān sarvāṃśca kākutstha kiṃ punarduḥkhamīdṛśam.

śaktaḥ tvam ātmanā ātmānam vijetum manasā eva hi
lokān sarvān ca kākutstha kim punaḥ duḥkham īdṛśam

kākutstha tvam ātmanā manasā eva hi ātmānam vijetum śaktaḥ
ca sarvān lokān [vijetum śaktaḥ] punaḥ īdṛśam duḥkham kim

11.
O Kakutstha, you are indeed capable of conquering your higher self (ātman) through your own mind (manas), and even all the worlds. How much more easily then can you overcome such sorrow as this?
नेदृशेषु विमुह्यन्ति त्वद्विधाः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
यदर्थं मैथिली त्यक्ता अपवादभयान्नृप ॥१२॥

12. nedṛśeṣu vimuhyanti tvadvidhāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
yadarthaṃ maithilī tyaktā apavādabhayānnṛpa.

na īdṛśeṣu vimuhyanti tvat vidhāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ
yat artham maithilī tyaktā apavāda bhayāt nṛpa

nṛpa tvat vidhāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ īdṛśeṣu na vimuhyanti
yat artham maithilī apavāda bhayāt tyaktā

O King, the best among men, like yourself, do not become bewildered or despondent in such situations. Consider the reason why Maithili was abandoned: due to the fear of public criticism.
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल धैर्येण सुसमाहितः ।
त्यजेमां दुर्बलां बुद्धिं संतापं मा कुरुष्व ह ॥१३॥
त्यजेमां दुर्बलां बुद्धिं संतापं मा कुरुष्व ह ॥१३॥
13. sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla dhairyeṇa susamāhitaḥ ,
tyajemāṃ durbalāṃ buddhiṃ saṃtāpaṃ mā kuruṣva ha.
tyajemāṃ durbalāṃ buddhiṃ saṃtāpaṃ mā kuruṣva ha.
13.
sa tvam puruṣaśārdūla dhairyeṇa susamāhitaḥ tyaja
imām durbalām buddhim saṃtāpam mā kuruṣva ha

puruṣaśārdūla sa tvam dhairyeṇa susamāhitaḥ imām
durbalām buddhim tyaja saṃtāpam mā kuruṣva ha

13.
O tiger among men, you, being well-composed and with unwavering firmness, abandon this weak resolve and do not give in to sorrow.
एवमुक्तस्तु काकुत्स्थो लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना ।
उवाच परया प्रीत्या सौमित्रिं मित्रवत्सलम् ॥१४॥

14. evamuktastu kākutstho lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā ,

Thus addressed by the noble-minded Lakshmana, Rama then spoke with supreme affection to Saumitri, who was ever devoted to his friends.
एवमेतन्नरश्रेष्ठ यथा वदसि लक्ष्मण ।
परितोषश्च मे वीर मम कार्यानुशासने ॥१५॥

15. evametannaraśreṣṭha yathā vadasi lakṣmaṇa ,
paritoṣaśca me vīra mama kāryānuśāsane.

O best among men, Lakṣmaṇa, it is exactly as you say. And, O hero, I am pleased with your adherence to my instructions.
निर्वृतिश्च कृता सौम्य संतापश्च निराकृतः ।
भवद्वाक्यैः सुमधुरैरनुनीतो ऽस्मि लक्ष्मण ॥१६॥
भवद्वाक्यैः सुमधुरैरनुनीतो ऽस्मि लक्ष्मण ॥१६॥
16. nirvṛtiśca kṛtā saumya saṃtāpaśca nirākṛtaḥ ,
bhavadvākyaiḥ sumadhurairanunīto'smi lakṣmaṇa.

nirvṛtiḥ ca kṛtā saumya saṃtāpaḥ ca nirākṛtaḥ

16.
saumya ca nirvṛtiḥ kṛtā ca saṃtāpaḥ nirākṛtaḥ
lakṣmaṇa asmi anunītaḥ bhavat sumadhuraiḥ vākyaiḥ
lakṣmaṇa asmi anunītaḥ bhavat sumadhuraiḥ vākyaiḥ
16.
And indeed, peace has been established, O gentle one, and distress has been dispelled. O Lakṣmaṇa, I have been comforted by your very sweet words.
