व्युष्य रात्रिं तु तत्रैव गङ्गाकूले स राघवः ।
भरतः काल्यमुत्थाय शत्रुघ्नमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vyuṣya rātriṃ tu tatraiva gaṅgākūle sa rāghavaḥ ,

1. After spending the night right there on the bank of the Gaṅgā, Bharata, a descendant of Raghu, rose early in the morning and said this to Shatrughna.
शत्रुघोत्तिष्ठ किं शेषे निषादाधिपतिं गुहम् ।
शीघ्रमानय भद्रं ते तारयिष्यति वाहिनीम् ॥२॥
2. śatrughottiṣṭha kiṃ śeṣe niṣādādhipatiṃ guham ,
śīghramānaya bhadraṃ te tārayiṣyati vāhinīm.
2. śatrugho uttiṣṭha kim śeṣe niṣādādhipatim guham
śīghram ānaya bhadram te tārayiṣyati vāhinīm
2. śatrugho uttiṣṭha kim śeṣe? (tvam) niṣādādhipatim guham śīghram ānaya.

(saḥ) vāhinīm tārayiṣyati.
2. "Shatrughna, get up! Why are you sleeping? Quickly bring Guha, the chief of the Niṣādas. May good fortune be with you. He will ferry our army across."
जागर्मि नाहं स्वपिमि तथैवार्यं विचिन्तयन् ।
इत्येवमब्रवीद्भ्रात्रा शत्रुघ्नो ऽपि प्रचोदितः ॥३॥
3. jāgarmi nāhaṃ svapimi tathaivāryaṃ vicintayan ,
ityevamabravīdbhrātrā śatrughno'pi pracoditaḥ.
3. jāgarmi na aham svapimi tathā eva āryam vicintayan
iti evam abravīt bhrātrā śatrughnaḥ api pracoditaḥ
3. aham na svapimi,
jāgarmi.
tathā eva āryam vicintayan (asmi).

3. "I am not sleeping; I am awake, constantly thinking of the noble one (Rāma)." Thus spoke Shatrughna, even though urged by his brother.
इति संवदतोरेवमन्योन्यं नरसिंहयोः ।
आगम्य प्राञ्जलिः काले गुहो भरतमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. iti saṃvadatorevamanyonyaṃ narasiṃhayoḥ ,
āgamya prāñjaliḥ kāle guho bharatamabravīt.
4. iti saṃvadatoḥ evam anyonyam narasiṃhayoḥ
āgamya prāñjaliḥ kāle guhaḥ bharatam abravīt
4. iti evam anyonyam saṃvadatoḥ narasiṃhayoḥ (satoḥ),
kāle guhaḥ prāñjaliḥ āgamya bharatam abravīt.
4. While the two "lions among men" (Bharata and Shatrughna) were conversing with each other in this manner, Guha approached at the opportune moment, with folded hands, and spoke to Bharata.
कच्चित् सुखं नदीतीरे ऽवात्सीः काकुत्स्थ शर्वरीम् ।
कच्चिच्च सह सैन्यस्य तव सर्वमनामयम् ॥५॥
5. kaccit sukhaṃ nadītīre'vātsīḥ kākutstha śarvarīm ,
kaccicca saha sainyasya tava sarvamanāmayam.
5. kaccit sukham nadītīre avātsīḥ kākutstha śarvarīm
kaccit ca saha sainyasya tava sarvam anāmayam
5. kākutstha kaccit sukham nadītīre śarvarīm avātsīḥ

5. O descendant of Kakutstha, I hope you passed the night comfortably on the river bank. And I hope that everything is well with you and your army.
गुहस्य तत्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा स्नेहादुदीरितम् ।
रामस्यानुवशो वाक्यं भरतो ऽपीदमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. guhasya tattu vacanaṃ śrutvā snehādudīritam ,
rāmasyānuvaśo vākyaṃ bharato'pīdamabravīt.
6. guhasya tat tu vacanam śrutvā snehāt udīritam
rāmasya anuvaśaḥ vākyam bharataḥ api idam abravīt
6. bharataḥ api guhasya snehāt udīritam tat vacanam
śrutvā rāmasya anuvaśaḥ idam vākyam abravīt
6. Having heard those words uttered by Guha out of affection, Bharata, ever devoted to Rama, also spoke these words.
सुखा नः शर्वरी राजन्पूजिताश्चापि ते वयम् ।
गङ्गां तु नौभिर्बह्वीभिर्दाशाः संतारयन्तु नः ॥७॥
7. sukhā naḥ śarvarī rājanpūjitāścāpi te vayam ,
gaṅgāṃ tu naubhirbahvībhirdāśāḥ saṃtārayantu naḥ.
7. sukhā naḥ śarvarī rājan pūjitāḥ ca api te vayam
gaṅgām tu naubhiḥ bahvībhiḥ dāśāḥ saṃtārayantu naḥ
7. rājan naḥ śarvarī sukhā ca vayam api te pūjitāḥ tu

7. O King, the night was pleasant for us, and we were also honored by you. Now, let the boatmen ferry us across the Ganga with many boats.
ततो गुहः संत्वरितः श्रुत्वा भरतशासनम् ।
प्रतिप्रविश्य नगरं तं ज्ञातिजनमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. tato guhaḥ saṃtvaritaḥ śrutvā bharataśāsanam ,
pratipraviśya nagaraṃ taṃ jñātijanamabravīt.
8. tataḥ guhaḥ saṃtvaritaḥ śrutvā bharataśāsanam
pratipraviśya nagaram tam jñātijanam abravīt
8. tataḥ guhaḥ bharataśāsanam śrutvā saṃtvaritaḥ

8. Then Guha, having heard Bharata's command, quickly re-entered the town and spoke to his kinsfolk.
उत्तिष्ठत प्रबुध्यध्वं भद्रमस्तु हि वः सदा ।
नावः समनुकर्षध्वं तारयिष्याम वाहिनीम् ॥९॥
9. uttiṣṭhata prabudhyadhvaṃ bhadramastu hi vaḥ sadā ,
nāvaḥ samanukarṣadhvaṃ tārayiṣyāma vāhinīm.
9. uttiṣṭhata prabudhyadhvam bhadram astu hi vaḥ
sadā nāvaḥ samanukarṣadhvam tārayiṣyāma vāhinīm

9. Rise up, awaken! May prosperity always be with you. Pull the boats closer; we shall ferry the army across.
ते तथोक्ताः समुत्थाय त्वरिता राजशासनात् ।
पञ्च नावां शतान्येव समानिन्युः समन्ततः ॥१०॥
10. te tathoktāḥ samutthāya tvaritā rājaśāsanāt ,
pañca nāvāṃ śatānyeva samāninyuḥ samantataḥ.
10. te tathā uktāḥ samutthāya tvaritāḥ rājaśāsanāt
pañca nāvām śatāni eva samāninnyuḥ samantataḥ
10. tathā uktāḥ te rājaśāsanāt tvaritāḥ samutthāya

10. Thus addressed, they rose quickly at the king's command and gathered five hundred boats from all sides.
अन्याः स्वस्तिकविज्ञेया महाघण्डा धरा वराः ।
शोभमानाः पताकिन्यो युक्तवाताः सुसंहताः ॥११॥
11. anyāḥ svastikavijñeyā mahāghaṇḍā dharā varāḥ ,
śobhamānāḥ patākinyo yuktavātāḥ susaṃhatāḥ.
11. anyāḥ svastikavijñeyāḥ mahāghaṇḍāḥ dharāḥ varāḥ
śobhamānāḥ patākinyaḥ yuktavātāḥ susaṃhatāḥ

11. Other boats were distinguished by auspicious marks, equipped with large bells, excellent carriers, splendid, adorned with banners, propelled by sails, and sturdily built.
ततः स्वस्तिकविज्ञेयां पाण्डुकम्बलसंवृताम् ।
सनन्दिघोषां कल्याणीं गुहो नावमुपाहरत् ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ svastikavijñeyāṃ pāṇḍukambalasaṃvṛtām ,
sanandighoṣāṃ kalyāṇīṃ guho nāvamupāharat.
12. tataḥ svastikavijñeyām pāṇḍukambalasaṃvṛtām
sanandighoṣām kalyāṇīm guhaḥ nāvam upāharat

12. Then Guha brought a boat, distinguished by auspicious marks, covered with white blankets, accompanied by joyous sounds, and auspicious.
तामारुरोह भरतः शत्रुघ्नश्च महाबलः ।
कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च याश्चान्या राजयोषितः ॥१३॥
13. tāmāruroha bharataḥ śatrughnaśca mahābalaḥ ,
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāścānyā rājayoṣitaḥ.
13. tām ārūroha bharataḥ śatrughnaḥ ca mahābalaḥ
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāḥ ca anyāḥ rāja-yoṣitaḥ
13. bharataḥ ca mahābalaḥ śatrughnaḥ ca kausalyā ca
sumitrā ca yāḥ ca anyāḥ rāja-yoṣitaḥ tām ārūroha
13. Bharata and the mighty Shatrughna boarded it (the boat). Kausalya, Sumitra, and all the other royal women also boarded.
पुरोहितश्च तत् पूर्वं गुरवे ब्राह्मणाश्च ये ।
अनन्तरं राजदारास्तथैव शकटापणाः ॥१४॥
14. purohitaśca tat pūrvaṃ gurave brāhmaṇāśca ye ,
anantaraṃ rājadārāstathaiva śakaṭāpaṇāḥ.
14. purohitaḥ ca tat pūrvam guravaḥ ca brāhmaṇāḥ ca
ye anantaram rāja-dārāḥ tathā eva śakaṭa-āpaṇāḥ
14. tat pūrvam purohitaḥ ca ye guravaḥ ca brāhmaṇāḥ

14. The chief priest and, before him, those teachers (guru) and Brahmins (brāhmaṇa) boarded. Following them, the royal wives, and similarly, carts and shops (were also brought).
आवासमादीपयतां तीर्थं चाप्यवगाहताम् ।
भाण्डानि चाददानानां घोषस्त्रिदिवमस्पृशत् ॥१५॥
15. āvāsamādīpayatāṃ tīrthaṃ cāpyavagāhatām ,
bhāṇḍāni cādadānānāṃ ghoṣastridivamaspṛśat.
15. āvāsam ādīpayatām tīrtham ca api avagāhatām
bhāṇḍāni ca ādadānānām ghoṣaḥ tridivam aspṛśat
15. āvāsam ādīpayatām ca tīrtham api avagāhatām ca
bhāṇḍāni ādadānānām ghoṣaḥ tridivam aspṛśat
15. The loud noise made by those who were setting fire to their homes, plunging into the sacred waters (tīrtha), and collecting their possessions reached up to heaven.
पताकिन्यस्तु ता नावः स्वयं दाशैरधिष्ठिताः ।
वहन्त्यो जनमारूढं तदा संपेतुराशुगाः ॥१६॥
16. patākinyastu tā nāvaḥ svayaṃ dāśairadhiṣṭhitāḥ ,
vahantyo janamārūḍhaṃ tadā saṃpeturāśugāḥ.
16. patākinyaḥ tu tāḥ nāvaḥ svayam dāśaiḥ adhiṣṭitāḥ
vahantyaḥ janam ārūḍham tadā sampetuḥ āśu-gāḥ
16. tu tāḥ nāvaḥ patākinyaḥ svayam dāśaiḥ adhiṣṭitāḥ
ārūḍham janam vahantyaḥ tadā āśu-gāḥ sampetuḥ
16. Those boats, decorated with banners and manned by the boatmen themselves, carrying the passengers who had boarded, then sped swiftly.
नारीणामभिपूर्णास्तु काश्चित् काश्चित्तु वाजिनाम् ।
कश्चित्तत्र वहन्ति स्म यानयुग्यं महाधनम् ॥१७॥
17. nārīṇāmabhipūrṇāstu kāścit kāścittu vājinām ,
kaścittatra vahanti sma yānayugyaṃ mahādhanam.
17. nārīṇām abhipūrṇāḥ tu kāścit kāścit tu vājinām
kaścit tatra vahanti sma yānayugyam mahādhanam
17. kāścit tu nārīṇām abhipūrṇāḥ kāścit tu vājinām

17. Some (conveyances) were completely filled with women, while others were full of horses. Among these, certain ones (or certain people) there carried extremely valuable vehicles.
ताः स्म गत्वा परं तीरमवरोप्य च तं जनम् ।
निवृत्ताः काण्डचित्राणि क्रियन्ते दाशबन्धुभिः ॥१८॥
18. tāḥ sma gatvā paraṃ tīramavaropya ca taṃ janam ,
nivṛttāḥ kāṇḍacitrāṇi kriyante dāśabandhubhiḥ.
18. tāḥ sma gatvā param tīram avaropya ca tam janam
nivṛttāḥ kāṇḍacitrāṇi kriyante dāśabandhubhiḥ
18. tāḥ sma gatvā param tīram ca tam janam avaropya
nivṛttāḥ dāśabandhubhiḥ kāṇḍacitrāṇi kriyante
18. Those (conveyances), having gone to the other shore and disembarked those people, then returned. Afterwards, various arrow-markings (or possibly 'target practice') were performed by the kinsmen of the boatmen.
सवैजयन्तास्तु गजा गजारोहैः प्रचोदिताः ।
तरन्तः स्म प्रकाशन्ते सध्वजा इव पर्वताः ॥१९॥
19. savaijayantāstu gajā gajārohaiḥ pracoditāḥ ,
tarantaḥ sma prakāśante sadhvajā iva parvatāḥ.
19. savaijayantāḥ tu gajāḥ gajārohaiḥ pracoditāḥ
tarantaḥ sma prakāśante sadhvajāḥ iva parvatāḥ
19. tu gajāḥ savaijayantāḥ gajārohaiḥ pracoditāḥ
tarantaḥ sma sadhvajāḥ parvatāḥ iva prakāśante
19. And the elephants, adorned with flags and urged on by their riders, appeared like mountains with banners as they swam across.
नावश्चारुरुहुस्त्वन्ये प्लवैस्तेरुस्तथापरे ।
अन्ये कुम्भघटैस्तेरुरन्ये तेरुश्च बाहुभिः ॥२०॥
20. nāvaścāruruhustvanye plavaisterustathāpare ,
anye kumbhaghaṭaisteruranye teruśca bāhubhiḥ.
20. nāvaḥ ca āruruhuḥ tu anye plavaiḥ teruḥ tathā apare
anye kumbhaghaṭaiḥ teruḥ anye teruḥ ca bāhubhiḥ
20. anye nāvaḥ ca āruruhuḥ tu anye plavaiḥ teruḥ tathā
apare anye kumbhaghaṭaiḥ teruḥ ca anye bāhubhiḥ teruḥ
20. And some boarded boats, while others crossed with floats. Similarly, some others crossed with earthen pots, and still others swam across with their own arms.
सा पुण्या ध्वजिनी गङ्गां दाशैः संतारिता स्वयम् ।
मैत्रे मुहूर्ते प्रययौ प्रयागवनमुत्तमम् ॥२१॥
21. sā puṇyā dhvajinī gaṅgāṃ dāśaiḥ saṃtāritā svayam ,
maitre muhūrte prayayau prayāgavanamuttamam.
21. sā puṇyā dhvajinī gaṅgām dāśaiḥ saṃtāritā svayam
maitre muhūrte prayayau prayāgavanam uttamam
21. sā puṇyā dhvajinī svayam dāśaiḥ gaṅgām saṃtāritā

21. That holy army (dhvajinī) itself was ferried across the Gaṅgā by boatmen. In an auspicious moment (maitre muhūrte), it proceeded to the excellent forest of Prayāga.
आश्वासयित्वा च चमूं महात्मा निवेशयित्वा च यथोपजोषम् ।
द्रष्टुं भरद्वाजमृषिप्रवर्यमृत्विग्वृतः सन्भरतः प्रतस्थे ॥२२॥
22. āśvāsayitvā ca camūṃ mahātmā niveśayitvā ca yathopajoṣam ,
draṣṭuṃ bharadvājamṛṣipravaryamṛtvigvṛtaḥ sanbharataḥ pratasthe.
22. āśvāsayitvā ca camūm mahātmā
niveśayitvā ca yathopajoṣam
draṣṭum bharadvājam ṛṣipravaryam
ṛtvigvṛtaḥ san bharataḥ pratasthe
22. mahātmā bharataḥ camūm āśvāsayitvā

ca ṛtvigvṛtaḥ san ṛṣipravaryam
bharadvājam draṣṭum pratasthe
22. Having reassured and settled the army comfortably, the great-souled (mahātman) Bharata, accompanied by priests (ṛtvig), set out to see Bharadvāja, the foremost among sages (ṛṣi).
