तेषामज्ञलिपद्मानि प्रगृहीतानि सर्वशः ।

Having completely accepted their respectfully folded hands (añjali), the king spoke agreeable and beneficial words to them.
अहो ऽस्मि परमप्रीतः प्रभावश्चातुलो मम ।
यन्मे ज्येष्ठं प्रियं पुत्रं यौवराज्यस्थमिच्छथ ॥२॥

Oh, I am exceedingly pleased, and my influence is incomparable, because you all desire my eldest and beloved son to be installed as crown prince.
इति प्रत्यर्च्य तान् राजा ब्राह्मणानिदमब्रवीत् ।
वसिष्ठं वामदेवं च तेषामेवोपशृण्वताम् ॥३॥

Thus, having offered his respects to those Brahmins, the king spoke these words to Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, even while those Brahmins were listening.
चैत्रः श्रीमानयं मासः पुण्यः पुष्पितकाननः ।
यौवराज्याय रामस्य सर्वमेवोपकल्प्यताम् ॥४॥

This glorious month of Chaitra, which is auspicious and has flowering groves, let everything indeed be prepared for Rāma's installation as crown prince.
कृतमित्येव चाब्रूतामभिगम्य जगत्पतिम् ।
यथोक्तवचनं प्रीतौ हर्षयुक्तौ द्विजर्षभौ ॥५॥

The two excellent Brahmins (dvijarṣabhau), filled with joy and satisfaction, approached the lord of the world and said, "It has been accomplished exactly as commanded."
ततः सुमन्त्रं द्युतिमान् राजा वचनमब्रवीत् ।
रामः कृतात्मा भवता शीघ्रमानीयतामिति ॥६॥

6. tataḥ sumantraṃ dyutimān rājā vacanamabravīt ,
rāmaḥ kṛtātmā bhavatā śīghramānīyatāmiti.

Then, the radiant king (rājā) addressed Sumantra, saying, "Let Rāma, who is self-controlled (kṛtātmā), be brought here by you immediately."
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय सुमन्त्रो राजशासनात् ।
रामं तत्रानयां चक्रे रथेन रथिनां वरम् ॥७॥

7. sa tatheti pratijñāya sumantro rājaśāsanāt ,

Sumantra, having assented with "So be it" (tathā iti) to the king's command (rājaśāsanāt), then brought Rāma, the best of charioteers (rathinām varam), there by chariot.
अथ तत्र समासीनास्तदा दशरथं नृपम् ।
प्राच्योदीच्याः प्रतीच्याश्च दाक्षिणात्याश्च भूमिपाः ॥८॥

8. atha tatra samāsīnāstadā daśarathaṃ nṛpam ,

Then, at that time, the kings (bhūmipāḥ) from the east (prācyāḥ), north (udīcyāḥ), west (pratīcyāḥ), and south (dākṣiṇātyāḥ) were assembled there before King Daśaratha.
म्लेच्छाश्चार्याश्च ये चान्ये वनशैलान्तवासिनः ।
उपासां चक्रिरे सर्वे तं देवा इव वासवम् ॥९॥

9. mlecchāścāryāśca ye cānye vanaśailāntavāsinaḥ ,
upāsāṃ cakrire sarve taṃ devā iva vāsavam.

All the Mlecchas and Aryas, and other dwellers of the forests and mountain regions, worshipped him, just as the gods worship Indra.

Among them, the royal sage (Dasharatha), who was like Indra among the Maruts, stood in his palace and saw his son approaching, riding in a chariot.
गन्धर्वराजप्रतिमं लोके विख्यातपौरुषम् ।
दीर्घबाहुं महासत्त्वं मत्तमातङ्गगामिनम् ॥११॥

11. gandharvarājapratimaṃ loke vikhyātapauruṣam ,
dīrghabāhuṃ mahāsattvaṃ mattamātaṅgagāminam.

He was comparable to the king of the Gandharvas, renowned in the world for his valor, long-armed, possessing great strength, and walking with the gait of a rutting elephant.
चन्द्रकान्ताननं राममतीव प्रियदर्शनम् ।
रूपौदार्यगुणैः पुंसां दृष्टिचित्तापहारिणम् ॥१२॥

12. candrakāntānanaṃ rāmamatīva priyadarśanam ,

Rama, whose face was as lovely as the moon, exceedingly pleasing to behold, and who, with his qualities of beauty and nobility, captivated the eyes and minds of men.
घर्माभितप्ताः पर्जन्यं ह्लादयन्तमिव प्रजाः ।
न ततर्प समायान्तं पश्यमानो नराधिपः ॥१३॥

13. gharmābhitaptāḥ parjanyaṃ hlādayantamiva prajāḥ ,

The king, observing [Rama] approaching, was not satisfied, just as people tormented by heat are not satisfied merely by a rain-cloud that brings joy (but long for the rain itself).
अवतार्य सुमन्त्रस्तं राघवं स्यन्दनोत्तमात् ।
पितुः समीपं गच्छन्तं प्राञ्जलिः पृष्ठतो ऽन्वगात् ॥१४॥

Having helped Rama dismount from the excellent chariot, Sumantra, with folded hands, followed him from behind as he went to his father's presence.
स तं कैलासशृङ्गाभं प्रासादं नरपुंगवः ।
आरुरोह नृपं द्रष्टुं सह सूतेन राघवः ॥१५॥

15. sa taṃ kailāsaśṛṅgābhaṃ prāsādaṃ narapuṃgavaḥ ,

saḥ tam kailāsaśṛṅgābham prāsādam narapuṃgavaḥ

That Rama, the best of men, ascended that palace, which resembled a peak of Mount Kailasa, along with the charioteer, in order to see the king.

Having approached and bowed down near his father, that Rama, with folded hands and announcing his own name, saluted his father's feet.
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रणतं पार्श्वे कृताञ्जलिपुटं नृपः ।
गृह्याञ्जलौ समाकृष्य सस्वजे प्रियमात्मजम् ॥१७॥

17. taṃ dṛṣṭvā praṇataṃ pārśve kṛtāñjalipuṭaṃ nṛpaḥ ,

Seeing his dear son (ātman) prostrating at his side with folded hands, the king took him by his hands, drew him close, and embraced him.
तस्मै चाभ्युद्यतं श्रीमान्मणिकाञ्चनभूषितम् ।
दिदेश राजा रुचिरं रामाय परमासनम् ॥१८॥

18. tasmai cābhyudyataṃ śrīmānmaṇikāñcanabhūṣitam ,

The glorious king then offered to Rama an excellent and splendid seat, which was prepared and adorned with jewels and gold.
तदासनवरं प्राप्य व्यदीपयत राघवः ।
स्वयेव प्रभया मेरुमुदये विमलो रविः ॥१९॥

19. tadāsanavaraṃ prāpya vyadīpayata rāghavaḥ ,

Having obtained that excellent seat, Rama shone forth with his own splendor, just as the spotless sun illuminates Mount Meru at its rising.
तेन विभ्राजिता तत्र सा सभाभिव्यरोचत ।
विमलग्रहनक्षत्रा शारदी द्यौरिवेन्दुना ॥२०॥

20. tena vibhrājitā tatra sā sabhābhivyarocata ,

That assembly, illuminated by him (Rama), shone brightly there, just as the autumnal sky, with its pure planets and constellations, is illuminated by the moon.
तं पश्यमानो नृपतिस्तुतोष प्रियमात्मजम् ।
अलंकृतमिवात्मानमादर्शतलसंस्थितम् ॥२१॥

21. taṃ paśyamāno nṛpatistutoṣa priyamātmajam ,

The king, seeing his dear son, was pleased, as if seeing his own adorned self (ātman) situated on the surface of a mirror.
स तं सस्मितमाभाष्य पुत्रं पुत्रवतां वरः ।
उवाचेदं वचो राजा देवेन्द्रमिव कश्यपः ॥२२॥

22. sa taṃ sasmitamābhāṣya putraṃ putravatāṃ varaḥ ,

The king, the best among those with sons, having addressed his son with a smile, spoke these words, just as Kaśyapa (the sage) would address Devendra (Indra, the king of gods).
ज्येष्ठायामसि मे पत्न्यां सदृश्यां सदृशः सुतः ।
उत्पन्नस्त्वं गुणश्रेष्ठो मम रामात्मजः प्रियः ॥२३॥

(he) rāma,

O Rāma, you, my dear son, are born from my eldest, suitable wife, similar (to me), and the best in qualities.
त्वया यतः प्रजाश्चेमाः स्वगुणैरनुरञ्जिताः ।
तस्मात्त्वं पुष्ययोगेन यौवराज्यमवाप्नुहि ॥२४॥

Because these subjects have been endeared by your excellent qualities, therefore, you shall obtain the position of crown prince (yauvarājya) at the auspicious conjunction with the Puṣya asterism.
कामतस्त्वं प्रकृत्यैव विनीतो गुणवानसि ।
गुणवत्यपि तु स्नेहात् पुत्र वक्ष्यामि ते हितम् ॥२५॥

Son, by your intrinsic nature (prakṛti) you are voluntarily humble and endowed with good qualities. Nevertheless, out of affection, I will tell you what is beneficial for you.
भूयो विनयमास्थाय भव नित्यं जितेन्द्रियः ।
कामक्रोधसमुत्थानि त्यजेथा व्यसनानि च ॥२६॥

Furthermore, always cultivate modesty and be one who has conquered his senses. And you should abandon vices that arise from desire and anger.
परोक्षया वर्तमानो वृत्त्या प्रत्यक्षया तथा ।
अमात्यप्रभृतीः सर्वाः प्रकृतीश्चानुरञ्जय ॥२७॥

By employing both indirect and direct methods, conciliate all your ministers and other subjects (prakṛti).
तुष्टानुरक्तप्रकृतिर्यः पालयति मेदिनीम् ।
तस्य नन्दन्ति मित्राणि लब्ध्वामृतमिवामराः ।
तस्मात् पुत्र त्वमात्मानं नियम्यैव समाचर ॥२८॥
तस्य नन्दन्ति मित्राणि लब्ध्वामृतमिवामराः ।

28. tuṣṭānuraktaprakṛtiryaḥ pālayati medinīm ,

The one whose subjects (prakṛti) are content and loyal, and who governs the earth, his friends rejoice like the gods having obtained nectar. Therefore, my son, you should act by thoroughly controlling your self (ātman).

त्वरिताः शीघ्रमभ्येत्य कौसल्यायै न्यवेदयन् ॥२९॥

Rama's well-wishing friends, having heard that, quickly approached Kausalya and reported the news to her.
सा हिरण्यं च गाश्चैव रत्नानि विविधानि च ।
व्यादिदेश प्रियाख्येभ्यः कौसल्या प्रमदोत्तमा ॥३०॥

The excellent woman Kausalya distributed gold, cows, and various jewels to those who had delivered the good news.
अथाभिवाद्य राजानं रथमारुह्य राघवः ।
ययौ स्वं द्युतिमद्वेश्म जनौघैः प्रतिपूजितः ॥३१॥

Then, having respectfully greeted the king and mounted his chariot, Rama (rāghava) went to his own splendid palace, honored by throngs of people.
ते चापि पौरा नृपतेर्वचस्तच्छ्रुत्वा तदा लाभमिवेष्टमाप्य ।
नरेन्द्रमामन्त्य गृहाणि गत्वा देवान् समानर्चुरतीव हृष्टाः ॥३२॥

32. te cāpi paurā nṛpatervacastacchrutvā tadā lābhamiveṣṭamāpya ,

And those citizens, having heard that decree from the king, and thus having obtained their cherished wish as if it were a great treasure, took leave of the king, went to their homes, and, exceedingly delighted, worshipped the gods.
