अतदर्हं महाराजं शयानमतथोचितम् ।
ययातिमिव पुण्यान्ते देवलोकात् परिच्युतम् ॥१॥

1. He saw the great king (mahārāja), lying in a manner unbefitting him (atathocitam), just like King Yayāti fallen from the celestial realm (devaloka) at the exhaustion of his merits (puṇya).
अनर्थरूपा सिद्धार्था अभीता भयदर्शिनी ।
पुनराकारयामास तमेव वरमङ्गना ॥२॥
2. anartharūpā siddhārthā abhītā bhayadarśinī ,
punarākārayāmāsa tameva varamaṅganā.

2. That woman, whose nature was ill-omened, whose purpose was accomplished, fearless and causing terror, demanded that very boon again.
त्वं कत्थसे महाराज सत्यवादी दृढव्रतः ।
मम चेमं वरं कस्माद्विधारयितुमिच्छसि ॥३॥
3. tvaṃ katthase mahārāja satyavādī dṛḍhavrataḥ ,
mama cemaṃ varaṃ kasmādvidhārayitumicchasi.
3. tvam katthase mahārāja satyavādī dṛḍhavrataḥ
mama ca imam varam kasmāt vidhārayitum icchasi
3. mahārāja tvam satyavādī ca dṛḍhavrataḥ katthase

3. You boast, O great king, that you are a truth-speaker and firm in vows. Why then do you wish to deny this boon of mine?
एवमुक्तस्तु कैकेय्या राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
प्रत्युवाच ततः क्रुद्धो मुहूर्तं विह्वलन्निव ॥४॥
4. evamuktastu kaikeyyā rājā daśarathastadā ,
pratyuvāca tataḥ kruddho muhūrtaṃ vihvalanniva.
4. evam uktaḥ tu kaikeyyā rājā daśarathaḥ tadā
pratyuvāca tataḥ kruddhaḥ muhūrtam vihvalan iva

4. Thus addressed by Kaikeyi, King Dasharatha then, enraged, replied, as if agitated for a moment.
मृते मयि गते रामे वनं मनुजपुंगवे ।
हन्तानार्ये ममामित्रे रामः प्रव्राजितो वनम् ॥५॥
5. mṛte mayi gate rāme vanaṃ manujapuṃgave ,
hantānārye mamāmitre rāmaḥ pravrājito vanam.
5. mṛte mayi gate rāme vanam manujapuṅgave hanta
anārye mama amitre rāmaḥ pravrājitaḥ vanam
5. mayi mṛte rāme manujapuṅgave vanam gate hanta

5. If I die and Rama, the best among men, goes to the forest – alas, O ignoble woman, my enemy, Rama will indeed be banished to the forest.
यदि सत्यं ब्रवीम्येतत्तदसत्यं भविष्यति ।
अकीर्तिरतुला लोके ध्रुवं परिभवश्च मे ॥६॥
6. yadi satyaṃ bravīmyetattadasatyaṃ bhaviṣyati ,
akīrtiratulā loke dhruvaṃ paribhavaśca me.
6. yadi satyam bravīmi etat tat asatyam bhaviṣyati
akīrtiḥ atulā loke dhruvam paribhavaḥ ca me
6. yadi etat satyam bravīmi,
tat asatyam bhaviṣyati.
ca loke atulā akīrtiḥ dhruvam me paribhavaḥ
6. If I speak this truth, it will become false. And surely, immeasurable infamy in the world and defeat will befall me.
तथा विलपतस्तस्य परिभ्रमितचेतसः ।
अस्तमभ्यगमत् सूर्यो रजनी चाभ्यवर्तत ॥७॥
7. tathā vilapatastasya paribhramitacetasaḥ ,
astamabhyagamat sūryo rajanī cābhyavartata.
7. tathā vilapataḥ tasya paribhramitacetasaḥ
astam abhyagamat sūryaḥ rajanī ca abhyavartata
7. tathā paribhramitacetasaḥ tasya vilapataḥ
sūryaḥ astam abhyagamat ca rajanī abhyavartata
7. As he lamented thus, with his mind bewildered, the sun set, and night began to fall.
स त्रियामा तथार्तस्य चन्द्रमण्डलमण्डिता ।
राज्ञो विलपमानस्य न व्यभासत शर्वरी ॥८॥
8. sa triyāmā tathārtasya candramaṇḍalamaṇḍitā ,
rājño vilapamānasya na vyabhāsata śarvarī.
8. sa triyāmā tathā ārtasya candramaṇḍalamaṇḍitā
rājñaḥ vilapamānasya na vyabhāsata śarvarī
8. tathā ārtasya vilapamānasya rājñaḥ,

8. To the king, thus distressed and lamenting, that night, though adorned with the moon's orb, did not appear bright.
तथैवोष्णं विनिःश्वस्य वृद्धो दशरथो नृपः ।
विललापार्तवद्दुःखं गगनासक्तलोचनः ॥९॥
9. tathaivoṣṇaṃ viniḥśvasya vṛddho daśaratho nṛpaḥ ,
vilalāpārtavadduḥkhaṃ gaganāsaktalocanaḥ.
9. tathā eva uṣṇam viniḥśvasya vṛddhaḥ daśarathaḥ
nṛpaḥ vilalāpa ārtavat duḥkham gaganāsaktalocanaḥ
9. vṛddhaḥ nṛpaḥ daśarathaḥ tathā eva uṣṇam viniḥśvasya
gaganāsaktalocanaḥ ārtavat duḥkham vilalāpa
9. And so, sighing hotly, the aged King Daśaratha lamented sorrowfully as if in great pain, his eyes fixed on the sky.
न प्रभातं त्वयेच्छामि मयायं रचितो ऽञ्जलिः ।
अथ वा गम्यतां शीघ्रं नाहमिच्छामि निर्घृणाम् ।
नृशंसां कैकेयीं द्रष्टुं यत्कृते व्यसनं महत् ॥१०॥
10. na prabhātaṃ tvayecchāmi mayāyaṃ racito'ñjaliḥ ,
atha vā gamyatāṃ śīghraṃ nāhamicchāmi nirghṛṇām ,
nṛśaṃsāṃ kaikeyīṃ draṣṭuṃ yatkṛte vyasanaṃ mahat.
10. na prabhātam tvayā icchāmi mayā ayam
racitaḥ añjaliḥ atha vā gamyatām śīghram
na aham icchāmi nirghṛṇām nṛśaṃsām
kaikeyīm draṣṭum yatkṛte vyasanam mahat
10. aham tvayā prabhātam na icchāmi.
ayam añjaliḥ mayā racitaḥ.
atha vā śīghram gamyatām.
aham nirghṛṇām nṛśaṃsām Kaikeyīm draṣṭum na icchāmi,
yatkṛte mahat vyasanam (abhūt).
10. I do not wish for dawn to break in your presence. I have made this entreaty (añjaliḥ). Or rather, go quickly. I do not wish to see the ruthless, cruel Kaikeyi, for whose sake this great calamity has occurred.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजा कैकेयीं संयताञ्जलिः ।
प्रसादयामास पुनः कैकेयीं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. evamuktvā tato rājā kaikeyīṃ saṃyatāñjaliḥ ,
prasādayāmāsa punaḥ kaikeyīṃ cedamabravīt.
11. evam uktvā tataḥ rājā kaikeyīm saṃyatāñjaliḥ
prasādayāmāsa punaḥ kaikeyīm ca idam abravīt
11. Rājā evam uktvā,
tataḥ saṃyatāñjaliḥ (san) punaḥ Kaikeyīm prasādayāmāsa,
ca idam abravīt (tām Kaikeyīm).
11. Having spoken thus, the king, with joined palms (saṃyatāñjaliḥ), then again sought to appease Kaikeyi and spoke this to her.
साधुवृत्तस्य दीनस्य त्वद्गतस्य गतायुषः ।
प्रसादः क्रियतां देवि भद्रे राज्ञो विशेषतः ॥१२॥
12. sādhuvṛttasya dīnasya tvadgatasya gatāyuṣaḥ ,
prasādaḥ kriyatāṃ devi bhadre rājño viśeṣataḥ.
12. sādhuvṛttasya dīnasya tvadgatasya gatāyuṣaḥ
prasādaḥ kriyatām devi bhadre rājñaḥ viśeṣataḥ
12. Devi,
Bhadre,
sādhuvṛttasya,
dīnasya,
tvadgatasya,
gatāyuṣaḥ rājñaḥ viśeṣataḥ prasādaḥ kriyatām.
12. O Goddess (devī), O auspicious one (bhadre), let favor be shown to the king, especially to him who is of virtuous conduct, distressed, devoted to you, and whose life is nearing its end.
शून्येन खलु सुश्रोणि मयेदं समुदाहृतम् ।
कुरु साधु प्रसादं मे बाले सहृदया ह्यसि ॥१३॥
13. śūnyena khalu suśroṇi mayedaṃ samudāhṛtam ,
kuru sādhu prasādaṃ me bāle sahṛdayā hyasi.
13. śūnyena khalu suśroṇi mayā idam samudāhṛtam
kuru sādhu prasādam me bāle sahṛdayā hi asi
13. Suśroṇi,
mayā idam (vacanam) śūnyena khalu samudāhṛtam.
Bāle,
me sādhu prasādam kuru,
hi (tvam) sahṛdayā asi.
13. O lady with beautiful hips (suśroṇi), indeed, this has been spoken by me in futility. O young woman (bāle), please show me favor, for you are indeed compassionate.
विशुद्धभावस्य हि दुष्टभावा ताम्रेक्षणस्याश्रुकलस्य राज्ञः ।
श्रुत्वा विचित्रं करुणं विलापं भर्तुर्नृशंसा न चकार वाक्यम् ॥१४॥
14. viśuddhabhāvasya hi duṣṭabhāvā tāmrekṣaṇasyāśrukalasya rājñaḥ ,
śrutvā vicitraṃ karuṇaṃ vilāpaṃ bharturnṛśaṃsā na cakāra vākyam.
14. viśuddhabhāvasya hi duṣṭabhāvā
tāmrekṣaṇasya aśrukalasya rājñaḥ
śrutvā vicitraṃ karuṇaṃ vilāpaṃ
bhartuḥ nṛśaṃsā na cakāra vākyam

tāmrekṣaṇasya aśrukalasya
bhartuḥ rājñaḥ vicitraṃ karuṇaṃ
vilāpaṃ śrutvā vākyam na cakāra
14. Indeed, the evil-minded and cruel Kaikeyi did not utter a word (or respond favorably), even after hearing the extraordinary and pathetic lament of her pure-hearted husband, the king, whose eyes were coppery (from grief) and who was choked with tears.
ततः स राजा पुनरेव मूर्छितः प्रियामतुष्टां प्रतिकूलभाषिणीम् ।
समीक्ष्य पुत्रस्य विवासनं प्रति क्षितौ विसंज्ञो निपपात दुःखितः ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sa rājā punareva mūrchitaḥ priyāmatuṣṭāṃ pratikūlabhāṣiṇīm ,
samīkṣya putrasya vivāsanaṃ prati kṣitau visaṃjño nipapāta duḥkhitaḥ.
15. tataḥ sa rājā punareva mūrchitaḥ
priyām atuṣṭām pratikūlabhāṣiṇīm
samīkṣya putrasya vivāsanaṃ prati
kṣitau visañjñaḥ nipapāta duḥkhitaḥ

priyām samīkṣya punareva
mūrchitaḥ visañjñaḥ kṣitau nipapāta
15. Then, the sorrowful king, seeing his beloved wife still discontent and speaking harshly about the exile of their son, fainted again and fell unconscious to the ground.
