1. tato hatān rākṣasapuṃgavāṃstāndevāntakāditriśiro'tikāyān ,

Then, the remaining rākṣasa (rakṣasa) hordes swiftly reported to Rāvaṇa about those chief rākṣasas who had been slain, including Devāntaka, Triśiras, and Atikāya.
ततो हतांस्तान् सहसा निशम्य राजा मुमोहाश्रुपरिप्लुताक्षः ।
पुत्रक्षयं भ्रातृवधं च घोरं विचिन्त्य राजा विपुलं प्रदध्यौ ॥२॥

Then, having suddenly heard of their being slain, the king became bewildered, his eyes overflowing with tears. Reflecting on the dreadful destruction of his sons and the slaughter of his brothers, the king deeply pondered (pradadhyau).

Then, seeing the sorrowful king immersed in an ocean of grief, Indrajit, the foremost son of the rākṣasa (rakṣasa) king, then spoke these words.
न तात मोहं प्रतिगन्तुमर्हसि यत्रेन्द्रजिज्जीवति राक्षसेन्द्र ।
नेन्द्रारिबाणाभिहतो हि कश्चित् प्राणान् समर्थः समरे ऽभिधर्तुम् ॥४॥

4. na tāta mohaṃ pratigantumarhasi yatrendrajijjīvati rākṣasendra ,

O father, you ought not to give in to bewilderment, as long as Indrajit, the lord of rākṣasas, lives. Indeed, no one struck by the arrows of the foe of Indra is capable of sustaining their vital breath (prāṇa) in battle.
पश्याद्य रामं सहलक्ष्मणेन मद्बाणनिर्भिन्नविकीर्णदेहम् ।
गतायुषं भूमितले शयानं शरैः शितैराचितसर्वगात्रम् ॥५॥

5. paśyādya rāmaṃ sahalakṣmaṇena madbāṇanirbhinnavikīrṇadeham ,

5.
Today, behold Rāma, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, his body torn apart and dismembered by my arrows, his life extinguished, lying on the ground, his entire form covered with sharp arrows.
इमां प्रतिज्ञां शृणु शक्रशत्रोः सुनिश्चितां पौरुषदैवयुक्ताम् ।
अद्यैव रामं सहलक्ष्मणेन संतापयिष्यामि शरैरमोघैः ॥६॥

6. imāṃ pratijñāṃ śṛṇu śakraśatroḥ suniścitāṃ pauruṣadaivayuktām ,

6.
Listen to this resolute vow of Indrajit (śakraśatru), imbued with valor and divine potency: Today itself, I will afflict Rāma, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, with my infallible arrows.
अद्येन्द्रवैवस्वतविष्णुमित्र साध्याश्विवैश्वानरचन्द्रसूर्याः ।
द्रक्ष्यन्ति मे विक्रममप्रमेयं विष्णोरिवोग्रं बलियज्ञवाटे ॥७॥

Today, Indra, Yama (Vaivasvata), Viṣṇu, Mitra, the Sādhyas, the Aśvins, Agni (Vaiśvānara), Candra (Moon), and Sūrya (Sun) will behold my immeasurable prowess, which will be as formidable as Viṣṇu's in Bali's (Vedic ritual) arena.
स एवमुक्त्वा त्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रुरापृच्छ्य राजानमदीनसत्त्वः ।
समारुरोहानिलतुल्यवेगं रथं खरश्रेष्ठसमाधियुक्तम् ॥८॥

8. sa evamuktvā tridaśendraśatrurāpṛcchya rājānamadīnasattvaḥ ,

saḥ evam uktvā tridaśendraśatruḥ

8.
Having spoken thus, he, Indrajit (tridaśendraśatru), whose spirit was undiminished, took leave of the king and ascended his chariot, which was swift as the wind and properly yoked with excellent mules.
समास्थाय महातेजा रथं हरिरथोपमम् ।

O subduer of enemies, the greatly refulgent one, having mounted a chariot resembling Indra's, swiftly went to the place where the battle was.
तं प्रस्थितं महात्मानमनुजग्मुर्महाबलाः ।
संहर्षमाणा बहवो धनुःप्रवरपाणयः ॥१०॥

10. taṃ prasthitaṃ mahātmānamanujagmurmahābalāḥ ,

Many mighty warriors, with excellent bows in their hands and filled with great joy, followed that great-souled one (mahātman) who had set out.
गजस्कन्धगताः के चित् के चित् परमवाजिभिः ।

Some were mounted on elephants' shoulders, while others rode on excellent horses, all bearing spears, maces, swords, axes, and clubs.

12.
He, the enemy of the king of the gods, went forth, praised by the night-wanderers, amidst terrifying conch shell blasts and the mighty sounds of war drums.
स शङ्खशशिवर्णेन छत्रेण रिपुसादनः ।
रराज परिपूर्णेन नभश्चन्द्रमसा यथा ॥१३॥

13. sa śaṅkhaśaśivarṇena chatreṇa ripusādanaḥ ,

He, the vanquisher of enemies, shone splendidly with an umbrella the color of a conch and the moon, just as the sky shines with a full moon.
अवीज्यत ततो वीरो हैमैर्हेमविभूषितैः ।
चारुचामरमुख्यैश्च मुख्यः सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥१४॥

14. avījyata tato vīro haimairhemavibhūṣitaiḥ ,

14.
Then that hero, the foremost among all archers, was fanned by excellent, beautiful chowries, golden and adorned with gold.
ततस्त्विन्द्रजिता लङ्का सूर्यप्रतिमतेजसा ।
रराजाप्रतिवीर्येण द्यौरिवार्केण भास्वता ॥१५॥

Then, Lanka indeed shone splendidly through Indrajit, who possessed unrivaled power and splendor like the sun, just as the sky (dyau) shines with the brilliant sun.
स तु दृष्ट्वा विनिर्यान्तं बलेन महता वृतम् ।
राक्षसाधिपतिः श्रीमान् रावणः पुत्रमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥

But that glorious Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, upon seeing his son going forth, surrounded by a large force, spoke.
त्वमप्रतिरथः पुत्र जितस्ते युधि वासवः ।
किं पुनर्मानुषं धृष्यं न वधिष्यसि राघवम् ॥१७॥

17. tvamapratirathaḥ putra jitaste yudhi vāsavaḥ ,

tvam apratirathaḥ putra jitaḥ te yudhi vāsavaḥ

Son, you are an irresistible warrior; Indra himself was conquered by you in battle. Why, then, would you not slay a mere vulnerable human like Rama?
तथोक्तो राक्षसेन्द्रेण प्रतिगृह्य महाशिषः ।
रथेनाश्वयुजा वीरः शीघ्रं गत्वा निकुम्भिलाम् ॥१८॥

18. tathokto rākṣasendreṇa pratigṛhya mahāśiṣaḥ ,
rathenāśvayujā vīraḥ śīghraṃ gatvā nikumbhilām.

Thus addressed by the lord of the rākṣasas (Ravana), the hero (Indrajit), having received great blessings, quickly went to Nikumbhilā by his horse-drawn chariot.
स संप्राप्य महातेजा युद्धभूमिमरिंदमः ।
स्थापयामास रक्षांसि रथं प्रति समन्ततः ॥१९॥

19. sa saṃprāpya mahātejā yuddhabhūmimariṃdamaḥ ,
sthāpayāmāsa rakṣāṃsi rathaṃ prati samantataḥ.

That highly energetic subduer of enemies (Indrajit), having reached the battlefield, stationed the rākṣasas all around his chariot.
ततस्तु हुतभोक्तारं हुतभुक् सदृशप्रभः ।
जुहुवे राक्षसश्रेष्ठो मन्त्रवद्विधिवत्तदा ॥२०॥

Then, the foremost of the rākṣasas (Indrajit), whose brilliance was like that of fire itself, offered oblations to the fire-god (Agni), with sacred incantations (mantra) and according to the prescribed rites (vidhivat) at that time.

There, the powerful lord of rākṣasas performed a Vedic fire ritual (homa), offering oblations that were sanctified with garlands and perfumes.
शस्त्राणि शरपत्राणि समिधो ऽथ विभीतकः ।
लोहितानि च वासांसि स्रुवं कार्ष्णायसं तथा ॥२२॥

Weapons, arrow-feathers, and then sacrificial fuel sticks (samidh), Vibhītaka wood, and red garments; also, a ladle made of black iron were among the items [used in the ritual].

There, having strewn arrow-feathers and spears around the fire, he seized the throat of a living, all-black goat for the ritual offering.

Immediately, the well-kindled, smokeless fire with mighty flames showed auspicious signs that indicated victory.

The fire (pāvaka), which had arisen spontaneously, with flames swirling clockwise and resembling molten gold, received that oblation.

He, the best among those skilled in weapons, summoned the divine weapon. And there, he also consecrated his bow and his own chariot - everything (with sacred incantations).

While that weapon was being invoked and oblations were being offered into the fire, the celestial region, along with the sun, planets, moon, and constellations, trembled.

He, whose brilliance blazed like fire and whose glory resembled that of great Indra, after offering into the fire, concealed himself (ātman) in the sky with his bow, arrows, sword, chariot, horses, and charioteer, in an inconceivable form.

He, remaining invisible, quickly approached the great battle among the monkey armies, having dismissed his own forces. He then rained down a fierce volley of arrows, just as a dark cloud pours forth water.

रणे निपेतुर्हरयो ऽद्रिकल्पा यथेन्द्रवज्राभिहता नगेन्द्राः ॥३०॥

With their bodies shattered by Indrajit's arrows, struck by illusion (māyā), those mountain-like monkeys fell in battle, crying out in distress, just as great mountains are struck down by Indra's thunderbolt.

माया निगूढं च सुरेन्द्रशत्रुं न चात्र तं राक्षसमभ्यपश्यन् ॥३१॥

They only saw the sharp-pointed arrows in the battle among the monkey armies. They did not, however, see that demon, the foe of the gods (Indrajit), who was concealed by illusion (māyā).

Then that formidable lord of demons (Indrajit) covered all directions with multitudes of sharp-pointed arrows that shone like the sun, and thereby distressed the chiefs of the monkeys.
स शूलनिस्त्रिंश परश्वधानि व्याविध्य दीप्तानलसंनिभानि ।
सविस्फुलिङ्गोज्ज्वलपावकानि ववर्ष तीव्रं प्लवगेन्द्रसैन्ये ॥३३॥

Brandishing his spears, swords, and axes, which resembled intensely blazing fires and glittered with sparks, he rained them down fiercely upon the army of the monkey chiefs.
ततो ज्वलनसंकाशैः शितैर्वानरयूथपाः ।
ताडिताः शक्रजिद्बाणैः प्रफुल्ला इव किंशुकाः ॥३४॥

Then, the monkey chiefs, struck by the sharp, fiery arrows of Indrajit, looked like fully bloomed palāśa trees.
अन्योन्यमभिसर्पन्तो निनदन्तश्च विस्वरम् ।
राक्षसेन्द्रास्त्रनिर्भिन्ना निपेतुर्वानरर्षभाः ॥३५॥

The foremost monkeys, pierced by the weapons of the chief of the rākṣasas (Indrajit), fell down, colliding with each other and screaming loudly.
उदीक्षमाणा गगनं के चिन्नेत्रेषु ताडिताः ।

Some, struck in the eyes by arrows, gazed up at the sky. Others collided with each other and fell to the ground.

(He struck) Mainda, Dvivida, Nīla, Gavākṣa, Gajagomukha (the two), Kesarin, Harilomān, and the monkey Vidyuddaṃṣṭra.

(He struck) Sūryānana, Jyotimukha, and also Dadhimukha, the monkey leader; Pāvakākṣa, Nala, and also Kumuda, the monkey.

Indrajit, the foremost among rākṣasas, struck all those best of monkeys with spears, lances, and sharp arrows enchanted by sacred utterances (mantra).
स वै गदाभिर्हरियूथमुख्यान्निर्भिद्य बाणैस्तपनीयपुङ्खैः ।
ववर्ष रामं शरवृष्टिजालैः सलक्ष्मणं भास्कररश्मिकल्पैः ॥४१॥

He, indeed, first pierced the principal monkey commanders with maces and then with golden-shafted arrows. Afterwards, he showered Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana, with a volley of arrows resembling the rays of the sun.
स बाणवर्षैरभिवर्ष्यमाणो धारानिपातानिव तान् विचिन्त्य ।
समीक्षमाणः परमाद्भुतश्री रामस्तदा लक्ष्मणमित्युवाच ॥४२॥

As he was being deluged by these arrow-showers, Rama, whose radiance was supremely wondrous, considered them like torrents of rain. Then, looking at Lakshmana, he spoke to him thus.
असौ पुनर्लक्ष्मण राक्षसेन्द्रो ब्रह्मास्त्रमाश्रित्य सुरेन्द्रशत्रुः ।
निपातयित्वा हरिसैन्यमुग्रमस्माञ् शरैरर्दयति प्रसक्तम् ॥४३॥

Lakshmana, moreover, this king of rākṣasas (rākṣasendraḥ), the enemy of Indra, having invoked the brahmāstra (brahmāstra) and struck down the mighty monkey army, is now relentlessly harassing us with arrows.
स्वयम्भुवा दत्तवरो महात्मा खमास्थितो ऽन्तर्हितभीमकायः ।
कथं नु शक्यो युधि नष्टदेहो निहन्तुमद्येन्द्रजिदुद्यतास्त्रः ॥४४॥

How indeed can this great-souled Indrajit, who was granted a boon by Brahmā, now positioned in the sky with his formidable body concealed and his weapon drawn, possibly be defeated in battle today?
मन्ये स्वयम्भूर्भगवानचिन्त्यो यस्यैतदस्त्रं प्रभवश्च यो ऽस्य ।
बाणावपातांस्त्वमिहाद्य धीमन्मया सहाव्यग्रमनाः सहस्व ॥४५॥

45.
I believe that the self-existent (svayambhū), the inconceivable divine Lord (bhagavān), is the source from which this weapon originates, and he is also the ultimate cause of this (power). O wise one, today, here, with me, maintain an unperturbed mind and endure the volleys of arrows.
प्रच्छादयत्येष हि राक्षसेन्द्रः सर्वा दिशः सायकवृष्टिजालैः ।
एतच्च सर्वं पतिताग्र्यवीरं न भ्राजते वानरराजसैन्यम् ॥४६॥

46. pracchādayatyeṣa hi rākṣasendraḥ sarvā diśaḥ sāyakavṛṣṭijālaiḥ ,

46.
This king of the rākṣasas (Indrajit) indeed covers all directions with torrents of arrows. And this entire army of the monkey king, with its foremost heroes fallen, no longer shines brightly.
आवां तु दृष्ट्वा पतितौ विसंज्ञौ निवृत्तयुद्धौ हतरोषहर्षौ ।
ध्रुवं प्रवेक्ष्यत्यमरारिवासं असौ समादाय रणाग्रलक्ष्मीम् ॥४७॥

47. āvāṃ tu dṛṣṭvā patitau visaṃjñau nivṛttayuddhau hataroṣaharṣau ,

47.
Seeing us two fallen, unconscious, having ceased fighting, and stripped of both anger and joy, he (Indrajit) will surely enter the abode of the enemies of the gods (amarārivāsam), having seized the glory of victory from the battlefield.

Then, at that moment, by Indrajit's showers of arrows, those two (Rama and Lakshmana) became severely wounded there. And that king of the rākṣasas, having overwhelmed them there, roared with joy in the battle.
स तत्तदा वानरराजसैन्यं रामं च संख्ये सहलक्ष्मणेन ।
विषादयित्वा सहसा विवेश पुरीं दशग्रीवभुजाभिगुप्ताम् ॥४९॥

Then, having suddenly caused despair in that army of the monkey king, and also in Rāma along with Lakshmana during the battle, he swiftly entered the city protected by Daśagrīva's arms.
