पुनरेवं ब्रुवाणं तु भरतं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः ।
प्रत्युवच ततः श्रीमाञ्ज्ञातिमध्ये ऽतिसत्कृतः ॥१॥
1. punarevaṃ bruvāṇaṃ tu bharataṃ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ,

1. Then, the glorious elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa (Rāma), highly honored among his kinsmen, replied to Bharata, who was speaking thus again.
उपपन्नमिदं वाक्यं यत्त्वमेवमभाषथाः ।
जातः पुत्रो दशरथात् कैकेय्यां राजसत्तमात् ॥२॥
2. upapannamidaṃ vākyaṃ yattvamevamabhāṣathāḥ ,
jātaḥ putro daśarathāt kaikeyyāṃ rājasattamāt.
2. upapannam idam vākyam yat tvam evam abhāṣathāḥ
jātaḥ putraḥ daśarathāt kaikeyyām rājasattamāt

2. This statement which you have spoken thus is indeed fitting, for you are born as a son of Daśaratha, the best of kings, from Kaikeyī.
पुरा भ्रातः पिता नः स मातरं ते समुद्वहन् ।
मातामहे समाश्रौषीद् राज्यशुल्कमनुत्तमम् ॥३॥
3. purā bhrātaḥ pitā naḥ sa mātaraṃ te samudvahan ,
mātāmahe samāśrauṣīd rājyaśulkamanuttamam.

3. Formerly, O brother, our father, upon marrying your mother, solemnly promised her father (your maternal grandfather) an unparalleled kingdom as a dowry.
देवासुरे च संग्रामे जनन्यै तव पार्थिवः ।
संप्रहृष्टो ददौ राजा वरमाराधितः प्रभुः ॥४॥
4. devāsure ca saṃgrāme jananyai tava pārthivaḥ ,
saṃprahṛṣṭo dadau rājā varamārādhitaḥ prabhuḥ.

saṃprahṛṣṭaḥ dadau rājā varam ārādhitaḥ prabhuḥ
4. ca devāsure saṃgrāme tava jananyai pārthivaḥ
prabhuḥ saṃprahṛṣṭaḥ ārādhitaḥ rājā varam dadau
4. And in a battle between gods and demons (devāsura saṃgrāma), your royal father, the lord, greatly pleased and propitiated, granted a boon to your mother.
ततः सा संप्रतिश्राव्य तव माता यशस्विनी ।
अयाचत नरश्रेष्ठं द्वौ वरौ वरवर्णिनी ॥५॥
5. tataḥ sā saṃpratiśrāvya tava mātā yaśasvinī ,
ayācata naraśreṣṭhaṃ dvau varau varavarṇinī.

ayācata naraśreṣṭham dvau varau varavarṇinī

5. Then, your renowned and beautiful mother, having secured his promise, asked that best of men (naraśreṣṭha) for two boons.
तव राज्यं नरव्याघ्र मम प्रव्राजनं तथा ।
तच्च राजा तथा तस्यै नियुक्तः प्रददौ वरम् ॥६॥
6. tava rājyaṃ naravyāghra mama pravrājanaṃ tathā ,
tacca rājā tathā tasyai niyuktaḥ pradadau varam.

tat ca rājā tathā tasyai niyuktaḥ pradadau varam
6. naravyāghra tava rājyam tathā mama pravrājanam (she
asked); ca rājā niyuktaḥ tathā tasyai tat varam pradadau
6. She asked for your kingdom, O tiger among men (naravyāghra), and my exile (pravrājana). And the king, thus bound by his word, granted that boon to her accordingly.
तेन पित्राहमप्यत्र नियुक्तः पुरुषर्षभ ।
चतुर्दश वने वासं वर्षाणि वरदानिकम् ॥७॥
7. tena pitrāhamapyatra niyuktaḥ puruṣarṣabha ,
caturdaśa vane vāsaṃ varṣāṇi varadānikam.
7. tena pitrā aham api atra niyuktaḥ puruṣarṣabha
caturdaśa vane vāsam varṣāṇi varadānikam
7. puruṣarṣabha tena pitrā aham api atra caturdaśa
varṣāṇi varadānikam vane vāsam niyuktaḥ
7. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), I was also appointed here by that father to dwell in the forest for fourteen years, as a consequence of the boon.
सो ऽहं वनमिदं प्राप्तो निर्जनं लक्ष्मणान्वितः ।
शीतया चाप्रतिद्वन्द्वः सत्यवादे स्थितः पितुः ॥८॥
8. so'haṃ vanamidaṃ prāpto nirjanaṃ lakṣmaṇānvitaḥ ,
śītayā cāpratidvandvaḥ satyavāde sthitaḥ pituḥ.
8. saḥ aham vanam idam prāptaḥ nirjanam lakṣmaṇānvitaḥ
sītayā ca apratidvandvaḥ satyavāde sthitaḥ pituḥ
8. saḥ aham lakṣmaṇānvitaḥ sītayā ca apratidvandvaḥ
pituḥ satyavāde sthitaḥ idam nirjanam vanam prāptaḥ
8. Thus, I, accompanied by Lakshmana and Sita, have arrived at this uninhabited forest, abiding by my father's truthful word, and without opposition (to my commitment).
भवानपि तथेत्येव पितरं सत्यवादिनम् ।
कर्तुमर्हति राजेन्द्रं क्षिप्रमेवाभिषेचनात् ॥९॥
9. bhavānapi tathetyeva pitaraṃ satyavādinam ,
kartumarhati rājendraṃ kṣipramevābhiṣecanāt.
9. bhavān api tathā iti eva pitaram satyavādinam
kartum arhati rājendram kṣipram eva abhiṣecanāt
9. bhavān api rājendram pitaram satyavādinam
tathā eva kṣipram eva abhiṣecanāt kartum arhati
9. You also, O king of kings (rājendra), ought to promptly ensure our father's truthfulness through your coronation (abhiṣecanāt), in that very same way (as I uphold my pledge).
ऋणान्मोचय राजानं मत्कृते भरत प्रभुम् ।
पितरं त्राहि धर्मज्ञ मातरं चाभिनन्दय ॥१०॥
10. ṛṇānmocaya rājānaṃ matkṛte bharata prabhum ,
pitaraṃ trāhi dharmajña mātaraṃ cābhinandaya.
10. ṛṇāt mocaya rājānam matkṛte bharata prabhum
pitaram trāhi dharmajña mātaram ca abhinandaya
10. bharata prabhu dharmajña matkṛte rājānam prabhum
ṛṇāt mocaya pitaram trāhi ca mātaram abhinandaya
10. O Bharata, O lord (prabhu), O knower of natural law (dharmajña), for my sake, release the king (your father) from his obligation. Protect your father and gladden your mother.
श्रूयते हि पुरा तात श्रुतिर्गीता यशस्विनी ।
गयेन यजमानेन गयेष्वेव पितॄन्प्रति ॥११॥
11. śrūyate hi purā tāta śrutirgītā yaśasvinī ,
gayena yajamānena gayeṣveva pitṝnprati.
11. śrūyate hi purā tāta śrutiḥ gītā yaśasvinī
gayena yajamānena gayeṣu eva pitṝn prati
11. tāta hi purā yaśasvinī gītā śrutiḥ śrūyate
gayena yajamānena gayeṣu eva pitṝn prati
11. Indeed, O dear one, it is heard that in ancient times, a glorious sacred text (śruti) was sung by Gaya, who was performing a ritual (yajña) specifically for his ancestors (pitṛ) in Gaya.
पुं नाम्ना नरकाद् यस्मात् पितरं त्रायते सुतः ।
तस्मात् पुत्र इति प्रोक्तः पितॄन्यत् पाति वा सुतः ॥१२॥
12. puṃ nāmnā narakād yasmāt pitaraṃ trāyate sutaḥ ,
tasmāt putra iti proktaḥ pitṝnyat pāti vā sutaḥ.
12. pum nāmnā narakāt yasmāt pitaraṃ trāyate sutaḥ
tasmāt putra iti proktaḥ pitṝn yat pāti vā sutaḥ
12. yasmāt sutaḥ pum nāmnā narakāt pitaraṃ trāyate,
tasmāt saḥ putra iti proktaḥ vā yat sutaḥ pitṝn pāti
12. Because a son (suta) saves his father (pitṛ) from the hell (naraka) named 'Put', therefore he is called 'putra'. Alternatively, it is because a son protects his ancestors (pitṛ).
एष्टव्या बहवः पुत्रा गुणवन्तो बहुश्रुताः ।
तेषां वै समवेतानामपि कश्चिद्गयां व्रजेत् ॥१३॥
13. eṣṭavyā bahavaḥ putrā guṇavanto bahuśrutāḥ ,
teṣāṃ vai samavetānāmapi kaścidgayāṃ vrajet.
13. eṣṭavyāḥ bahavaḥ putrāḥ guṇavantaḥ bahuśrutāḥ
teṣām vai samavetānām api kaścit gayām vrajet
13. bahavaḥ guṇavantaḥ bahuśrutāḥ putrāḥ eṣṭavyāḥ
teṣām samavetānām api kaścit vai gayām vrajet
13. Many sons should be desired, ones who are virtuous and highly learned. For, among such an assembly of them, it is possible that at least one might go to Gaya.
एवं राजर्षयः सर्वे प्रतीता राजनन्दन ।
तस्मात्त्राहि नरश्रेष्ठ पितरं नरकात् प्रभो ॥१४॥
14. evaṃ rājarṣayaḥ sarve pratītā rājanandana ,
tasmāttrāhi naraśreṣṭha pitaraṃ narakāt prabho.
14. evam rājarṣayaḥ sarve pratītāḥ rājanandana
tasmāt trāhi naraśreṣṭha pitaraṃ narakāt prabho
14. rājanandana evam sarve rājarṣayaḥ pratītāḥ tasmāt naraśreṣṭha prabho,
pitaraṃ narakāt trāhi
14. Thus, all royal sages (rājarṣayaḥ) are convinced [of this teaching], O prince (rājanandana). Therefore, O best among men, O lord, save your father (pitṛ) from hell (naraka).
अयोध्यां गच्छ भरत प्रकृतीरनुरञ्जय ।
शत्रुघ्न सहितो वीर सह सर्वैर्द्विजातिभिः ॥१५॥
15. ayodhyāṃ gaccha bharata prakṛtīranurañjaya ,
śatrughna sahito vīra saha sarvairdvijātibhiḥ.
15. ayodhyām gaccha bharata prakṛtīḥ anurañjaya
śatrughna sahitaḥ vīra saha sarvaiḥ dvijātibhiḥ
15. bharata vīra śatrughna sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ dvijātibhiḥ
saha ayodhyām gaccha prakṛtīḥ anurañjaya
15. O hero Bharata, go to Ayodhya and please the citizens (prakṛti), accompanied by Śatrughna and all the twice-born (dvijāti).
प्रवेक्ष्ये दण्डकारण्यमहमप्यविलम्बयन् ।
आभ्यां तु सहितो राजन् वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणेन च ॥१६॥
16. pravekṣye daṇḍakāraṇyamahamapyavilambayan ,
ābhyāṃ tu sahito rājan vaidehyā lakṣmaṇena ca.
16. pravekṣye daṇḍakāraṇyam aham api avilambayan
ābhyām tu sahitaḥ rājan vaidehyā lakṣmaṇena ca
16. rājan aham api avilambayan vaidehyā lakṣmaṇena
ca ābhyām sahitaḥ daṇḍakāraṇyam pravekṣye
16. O King, I will also enter the Daṇḍaka forest without delay, accompanied by these two, Vaidehī and Lakṣmaṇa.
त्वं राजा भव भरत स्वयं नराणां वन्यानामहमपि राजराण् मृगाणाम् ।
गच्छ त्वं पुरवरमद्य संप्रहृष्टः संहृष्टस्त्वहमपि दण्डकान्प्रवेक्ष्ये ॥१७॥
17. tvaṃ rājā bhava bharata svayaṃ narāṇāṃ vanyānāmahamapi rājarāṇ mṛgāṇām ,
gaccha tvaṃ puravaramadya saṃprahṛṣṭaḥ saṃhṛṣṭastvahamapi daṇḍakānpravekṣye.
17. tvam rājā bhava bharata svayam narāṇām
vanyānām aham api rājarāṭ mṛgāṇām gaccha
tvam puravaram adya samprahṛṣṭaḥ
saṃhṛṣṭaḥ tu aham api daṇḍakān pravekṣye
17. bharata tvam svayam narāṇām rājā bhava
aham api vanyānām mṛgāṇām rājarāṭ tvam
samprahṛṣṭaḥ adya puravaram gaccha
aham api saṃhṛṣṭaḥ tu daṇḍakān pravekṣye
17. O Bharata, you yourself be the king of men. And I, for my part, will be the king of forest animals (mṛga). You, greatly delighted, go to the excellent city today. And I, also greatly delighted, will enter the Daṇḍaka forests.
छायां ते दिनकरभाः प्रबाधमानं वर्षत्रं भरत करोतु मूर्ध्नि शीताम् ।
एतेषामहमपि काननद्रुमाणां छायां तामतिशयिनीं सुखं श्रयिष्ये ॥१८॥
18. chāyāṃ te dinakarabhāḥ prabādhamānaṃ varṣatraṃ bharata karotu mūrdhni śītām ,
eteṣāmahamapi kānanadrumāṇāṃ chāyāṃ tāmatiśayinīṃ sukhaṃ śrayiṣye.
18. chāyām te dinakarabhāḥ prabādhamānam
varṣatram bharata karotu mūrdhni
śītām eteṣām aham api kānanadrumāṇām
chāyām tām atiśayinīm sukham śrayiṣye
18. bharata dinakarabhāḥ prabādhamānam
varṣatram te mūrdhni śītām chāyām karotu
aham api eteṣām kānanadrumāṇām
atiśayinīm tām chāyām sukham śrayiṣye
18. O Bharata, may the parasol, warding off your sun's rays, make cool shade on your head. And I, for my part, will comfortably seek that excellent shade of these forest trees.
शत्रुघ्नः कुशलमतिस्तु ते सहायः सौमित्रिर्मम विदितः प्रधानमित्रम् ।
चत्वारस्तनयवरा वयं नरेन्द्रं सत्यस्थं भरत चराम मा विषादम् ॥१९॥
19. śatrughnaḥ kuśalamatistu te sahāyaḥ saumitrirmama viditaḥ pradhānamitram ,
catvārastanayavarā vayaṃ narendraṃ satyasthaṃ bharata carāma mā viṣādam.
19. śatrughnaḥ kuśalamatiḥ tu te sahāyaḥ
saumitriḥ mama viditaḥ pradhānamitram
catvāraḥ tanayavarāḥ vayam narendram
satyastham bharata carāma mā viṣādam
19. bharata śatrughnaḥ kuśalamatiḥ te tu
sahāyaḥ saumitriḥ mama pradhānamitram
viditaḥ vayam catvāraḥ tanayavarāḥ
satyastham narendram carāma mā viṣādam
19. Shatrughna, with his keen intellect, is your assistant. Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, is known to me as my chief friend. O Bharata, we four excellent sons adhere to the king who abides by truth (dharma); do not despair.
