पुरा त्रेतायुगे ह्यासीदरण्यं बहुविस्तरम् ।
समन्ताद् योजनशतं निर्मृगं पक्षिवर्जितम् ॥१॥

1. Long ago, in the Tretā age (tretāyuga), there was indeed a very extensive forest. All around, for a hundred yojanas, it was devoid of animals and bereft of birds.
तस्मिन्निर्मानुषे ऽरण्ये कुर्वाणस्तप उत्तमम् ।
अहमाक्रमितुं शौम्य तदरण्यमुपागमम् ॥२॥
2. tasminnirmānuṣe'raṇye kurvāṇastapa uttamam ,
ahamākramituṃ śaumya tadaraṇyamupāgamam.
2. tasmin nirmanuṣe araṇye kurvāṇaḥ tapaḥ uttamam
aham ākramitum saumya tat araṇyam upāgamam
2. saumya,
aham tasmin nirmanuṣe araṇye uttamam tapaḥ kurvāṇaḥ tat araṇyam ākramitum upāgamam.
2. In that uninhabited forest, while performing excellent (tapas), O gentle one, I approached that forest to traverse it.
तस्य रूपमरण्यस्य निर्देष्टुं न शशाक ह ।
फलमूलैः सुखास्वादैर्बहुरूपैश्च पादपैः ॥३॥
3. tasya rūpamaraṇyasya nirdeṣṭuṃ na śaśāka ha ,
phalamūlaiḥ sukhāsvādairbahurūpaiśca pādapaiḥ.
3. tasya rūpam araṇyasya nirdeṣṭum na śaśāka ha
phalamūlaiḥ sukhāsvādaiḥ bahurūpaiḥ ca pādapaiḥ
3. ha tasya araṇyasya rūpam sukhāsvādaiḥ phalamūlaiḥ
ca bahurūpaiḥ pādapaiḥ nirdeṣṭum na śaśāka
3. Indeed, one could not describe the form of that forest, which was adorned with trees of various kinds, bearing delightful fruits and roots.
तस्यारण्यस्य मध्ये तु सरो योजनमायतम् ।
पद्मोत्पलसमाकीर्णं समतिक्रान्तशैवलम् ॥४॥
4. tasyāraṇyasya madhye tu saro yojanamāyatam ,
padmotpalasamākīrṇaṃ samatikrāntaśaivalam.
4. tasya araṇyasya madhye tu saraḥ yojanam āyatam
padmotpalasamākīrṇam samatikrāntaśaivalam
4. tu tasya araṇyasya madhye yojanam āyatam
padmotpalasamākīrṇam samatikrāntaśaivalam saraḥ
4. And in the midst of that forest, there was a lake, a full yojana (about 8 miles) in extent, completely covered with lotuses and water lilies, and entirely free from moss.
तदाश्चर्यमिवात्यर्थं सुखास्वादमनुत्तमम् ।
अरजस्कं तथाक्षोभ्यं श्रीमत्पक्षिगणायुतम् ॥५॥
5. tadāścaryamivātyarthaṃ sukhāsvādamanuttamam ,
arajaskaṃ tathākṣobhyaṃ śrīmatpakṣigaṇāyutam.
5. tat āścaryam iva atyartham sukhāsvādam anuttamam
arajaskam tathā akṣobhyam śrīmatpakṣigaṇāyutam
5. tat iva āścaryam atyartham sukhāsvādam anuttamam
arajaskam tathā akṣobhyam śrīmatpakṣigaṇāyutam
5. That lake, truly wondrous and supremely delightful to experience, was pure, tranquil, and abundant with glorious flocks of birds.
तस्मिन् सरःसमीपे तु महदद्भुतमाश्रमम् ।
पुराणं पुण्यमत्यर्थं तपस्विजनवर्जितम् ॥६॥
6. tasmin saraḥsamīpe tu mahadadbhutamāśramam ,
purāṇaṃ puṇyamatyarthaṃ tapasvijanavarjitam.
6. tasmin saraḥsamīpe tu mahat adbhutam āśramam
purāṇam puṇyam atyartham tapasvijanavarjitam
6. tu tasmin saraḥsamīpe mahat adbhutam purāṇam
atyartham puṇyam tapasvijanavarjitam āśramam
6. Near that lake, there was indeed a great and astonishing hermitage (āśrama), ancient and exceedingly sacred, yet surprisingly devoid of any ascetics.
तत्राहमवसं रात्रिं नैदाघीं पुरुषर्षभ ।
प्रभाते काल्यमुत्थाय सरस्तदुपचक्रमे ॥७॥
7. tatrāhamavasaṃ rātriṃ naidāghīṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
prabhāte kālyamutthāya sarastadupacakrame.
7. tatra aham avasam rātrim naidāghīm puruṣarṣabha
prabhāte kālyam utthāya saraḥ tat upacakrame
7. puruṣarṣabha aham tatra naidāghīm rātrim avasam
prabhāte kālyam utthāya tat saraḥ upacakrame
7. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), I spent that summer night there. In the morning, having risen early, I approached that lake.
अथापश्यं शवं तत्र सुपुष्टमजरं क्व चित् ।
तिष्ठन्तं परया लक्ष्म्या तस्मिंस्तोयाशये नृप ॥८॥
8. athāpaśyaṃ śavaṃ tatra supuṣṭamajaraṃ kva cit ,
tiṣṭhantaṃ parayā lakṣmyā tasmiṃstoyāśaye nṛpa.
8. atha apaśyam śavam tatra supuṣṭam ajaram kva cit
tiṣṭhantam parayā lakṣmyā tasmin toyāśaye nṛpa
8. atha nṛpa tatra tasmin toyāśaye kva cit parayā
lakṣmyā tiṣṭhantam supuṣṭam ajaram śavam apaśyam
8. Then, O king, in that body of water, I saw a very stout, undecaying corpse, remaining there somewhere with supreme splendor (lakṣmī).
तमर्थं चिन्तयानो ऽहं मुहूर्तं तत्र राघव ।
विष्ठितो ऽस्मि सरस्तीरे किं न्विदं स्यादिति प्रभो ॥९॥
9. tamarthaṃ cintayāno'haṃ muhūrtaṃ tatra rāghava ,
viṣṭhito'smi sarastīre kiṃ nvidaṃ syāditi prabho.
9. tam artham cintayānaḥ aham muhūrtam tatra rāghava
viṣṭhitaḥ asmi sarastīre kim nu idam syāt iti prabho
9. rāghava prabho aham tam artham cintayānaḥ muhūrtam
tatra sarastīre viṣṭhitaḥ asmi kim nu idam syāt iti
9. O Rāghava, O lord (prabho), pondering that matter, I stood there for a moment on the bank of the lake, wondering, 'What could this possibly be?'
अथापश्यं मुहूर्तात्तु दिव्यमद्भुतदर्शनम् ।
विमानं परमोदारं हंसयुक्तं मनोजवम् ॥१०॥
10. athāpaśyaṃ muhūrtāttu divyamadbhutadarśanam ,
vimānaṃ paramodāraṃ haṃsayuktaṃ manojavam.
10. atha apaśyam muhūrtāt tu divyam adbhutadarśanam
vimānam paramodāram haṃsayuktam manojavam
10. atha muhūrtāt tu divyam adbhutadarśanam
paramodāram haṃsayuktam manojavam vimānam apaśyam
10. Then, after a moment, I saw a divine aerial car (vimāna), of wonderful appearance, exceedingly splendid, yoked with swans, and swift as thought.
अत्यर्थं स्वर्गिणं तत्र विमाने रघुनन्दन ।
उपास्ते ऽप्सरसां वीर सहस्रं दिव्यभूषणम् ।
गान्ति गेयानि रम्याणि वादयन्ति तथापराः ॥११॥
11. atyarthaṃ svargiṇaṃ tatra vimāne raghunandana ,
upāste'psarasāṃ vīra sahasraṃ divyabhūṣaṇam ,
gānti geyāni ramyāṇi vādayanti tathāparāḥ.
11. atyartham svargiṇam tatra vimāne
raghunandana upāste apsarasām vīra
sahasram divyabhūṣaṇam gānti
geyāni ramyāṇi vādayanti tathā aparāḥ
11. raghunandana vīra tatra vimāne
divyabhūṣaṇam apsarasām sahasram
svargiṇam atyartham upāste ramyāṇi
geyāni gānti tathā aparāḥ vādayanti
11. O delight of the Raghus, O hero, there in that celestial chariot, a thousand divinely adorned Apsaras exceedingly attend upon the celestial being. Some sing beautiful songs, and others play musical instruments.
पश्यतो मे तदा राम विमानादवरुह्य च ।
तं शवं भक्षयामास स स्वर्गी रघुनन्दन ॥१२॥
12. paśyato me tadā rāma vimānādavaruhya ca ,
taṃ śavaṃ bhakṣayāmāsa sa svargī raghunandana.
12. paśyataḥ me tadā rāma vimānāt ava ruhya ca
tam śavam bhakṣayāmāsa saḥ svargī raghunandana
12. rāma raghunandana tadā me paśyataḥ svargī
vimānāt ava ruhya ca tam śavam bhakṣayāmāsa
12. O Rama, O delight of the Raghus, then, while I was watching, having descended from the celestial chariot, that celestial being devoured that corpse.
ततो भुक्त्वा यथाकामं मांसं बहु च सुष्ठु च ।
अवतीर्य सरः स्वर्गी संस्प्रष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥१३॥
13. tato bhuktvā yathākāmaṃ māṃsaṃ bahu ca suṣṭhu ca ,
avatīrya saraḥ svargī saṃspraṣṭumupacakrame.
13. tataḥ bhuktvā yathākāmam māṃsam bahu ca suṣṭhu
ca avatīrya saraḥ svargī sam spraṣṭum upacakrame
13. tataḥ svargī bahu yathākāmam suṣṭhu ca māṃsam
bhuktvā ca saraḥ avatīrya sam spraṣṭum upacakrame
13. Thereafter, having eaten a large amount of meat to his heart's content and very well, the celestial being descended to the lake and began to bathe.
उपस्पृश्य यथान्यायं स स्वर्गी पुरुषर्षभ ।
आरोढुमुपचक्राम विमानवरमुत्तमम् ॥१४॥
14. upaspṛśya yathānyāyaṃ sa svargī puruṣarṣabha ,
āroḍhumupacakrāma vimānavaramuttamam.
14. upa spṛśya yathānyāyam saḥ svargī puruṣarṣabha
āroḍhum upacakrāma vimānavaram uttamam
14. puruṣarṣabha saḥ svargī yathānyāyam upa
spṛśya uttamam vimānavaram āroḍhum upacakrame
14. O best among men, having bathed according to proper custom, that celestial being began to ascend the excellent best celestial chariot.
तमहं देवसंकाशमारोहन्तमुदीक्ष्य वै ।
अथाहमब्रुवं वाक्यं तमेव पुरुषर्षभ ॥१५॥
15. tamahaṃ devasaṃkāśamārohantamudīkṣya vai ,
athāhamabruvaṃ vākyaṃ tameva puruṣarṣabha.
15. tam aham devasaṃkāśam ārohantam udīkṣya vai
atha aham abruvam vākyam tam eva puruṣarṣabha
15. Having indeed seen him, who was god-like and ascending, I then spoke these words to that very best among men.
को भवान्देवसंकाश आहारश्च विगर्हितः ।
त्वयायं भुज्यते सौम्य किं कर्थं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१६॥
16. ko bhavāndevasaṃkāśa āhāraśca vigarhitaḥ ,
tvayāyaṃ bhujyate saumya kiṃ karthaṃ vaktumarhasi.
16. kaḥ bhavān devasaṃkāśaḥ āhāraḥ ca vigarhitaḥ tvayā
ayam bhujyate saumya kim katham vaktum arhasi
16. Who are you, O god-like one? And this food is reprehensible. O gentle one, this is being eaten by you. What (is the reason) and how (is this possible)? You ought to speak.
आश्चर्यमीदृशो भावो भास्वरो देवसंमतः ।
आहारो गर्हितः सौम्य श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥१७॥
17. āścaryamīdṛśo bhāvo bhāsvaro devasaṃmataḥ ,
āhāro garhitaḥ saumya śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ.
17. āścaryam īdṛśaḥ bhāvaḥ bhāsvaraḥ devasaṃmataḥ
āhāraḥ garhitaḥ saumya śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ
17. Such a brilliant, god-approved state (of being) is astonishing! O gentle one, the food is condemned. I wish to hear the truth of it.
