मारीच श्रूयतां तात वचनं मम भाषतः ।
आर्तो ऽस्मि मम चार्तस्य भवान् हि परमा गतिः ॥१॥
1. mārīca śrūyatāṃ tāta vacanaṃ mama bhāṣataḥ ,

जानीषे त्वं जनस्थानं भ्राता यत्र खरो मम ।
दूषणश्च महाबाहुः स्वसा शूर्पणखा च मे ॥२॥
2. jānīṣe tvaṃ janasthānaṃ bhrātā yatra kharo mama ,
dūṣaṇaśca mahābāhuḥ svasā śūrpaṇakhā ca me.

2. You know Janasthāna, the place where my brother Khara, and the mighty-armed Dūṣaṇa, and my sister Śūrpaṇakhā reside.
त्रिशिराश्च महातेजा राक्षसः पिशिताशनः ।
अन्ये च बहवः शूरा लब्धलक्षा निशाचराः ॥३॥
3. triśirāśca mahātejā rākṣasaḥ piśitāśanaḥ ,
anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā labdhalakṣā niśācarāḥ.
3. triśirāḥ ca mahātejāḥ rākṣasaḥ piśitāśanaḥ
anye ca bahavaḥ śūrāḥ labdhalakṣāḥ niśācarāḥ
3. ca triśirāḥ mahātejāḥ rākṣasaḥ piśitāśanaḥ anye

3. And also Triśirā, the greatly energetic, flesh-eating demon, is there; along with many other brave night-roaming demons who are skilled marksmen.
वसन्ति मन्नियोगेन अधिवासं च राक्षसः ।
बाधमाना महारण्ये मुनीन्ये धर्मचारिणः ॥४॥
4. vasanti manniyogena adhivāsaṃ ca rākṣasaḥ ,
bādhamānā mahāraṇye munīnye dharmacāriṇaḥ.
4. vasanti mama niyogena adhivāsam ca rākṣasaḥ
bādhamānāḥ mahāraṇye munīn ye dharmacāriṇaḥ

4. By my command, the Rākṣasas reside and occupy this dwelling, relentlessly harassing in the great forest those ascetics who are practitioners of natural law (dharma).
चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम् ।
शूराणां लब्धलक्षाणां खरचित्तानुवर्तिनाम् ॥५॥
5. caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām ,
śūrāṇāṃ labdhalakṣāṇāṃ kharacittānuvartinām.

5. Fourteen thousand Rākṣasas of dreadful deeds, valorous, successful in their aims, and obedient to Khara's will (karma).
ते त्विदानीं जनस्थाने वसमाना महाबलाः ।
संगताः परमायत्ता रामेण सह संयुगे ॥६॥
6. te tvidānīṃ janasthāne vasamānā mahābalāḥ ,
saṃgatāḥ paramāyattā rāmeṇa saha saṃyuge.
6. te tu idānīm janasthāne vasamānā mahābalāḥ
saṅgatāḥ paramāyattā rāmeṇa saha saṃyuge
6. tu idānīm janasthāne vasamānā mahābalāḥ te
paramāyattā rāmeṇa saha saṃyuge saṅgatāḥ
6. Indeed, those exceedingly mighty Rākṣasas, who are now dwelling in Janasthāna, fully prepared, confronted Rāma in battle.
तेन संजातरोषेण रामेण रणमूर्धनि ।
अनुक्त्वा परुषं किं चिच्छरैर्व्यापारितं धनुः ॥७॥
7. tena saṃjātaroṣeṇa rāmeṇa raṇamūrdhani ,
anuktvā paruṣaṃ kiṃ ciccharairvyāpāritaṃ dhanuḥ.
7. tena saṃjātaroṣeṇa rāmeṇa raṇamūrdhani anuktvā
paruṣam kiṃcit śaraiḥ vyāpāritam dhanuḥ

7. That enraged Rāma, at the forefront of battle, without speaking anything harsh, wielded his bow with arrows.
चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम् ।
निहतानि शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मानुषेण पदातिना ॥८॥
8. caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām ,
nihatāni śaraistīkṣṇairmānuṣeṇa padātinā.
8. caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasām bhīmakarmaṇām
nihatāni śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ mānuṣeṇa padātinā

rakṣasām caturdaśa sahasrāṇi nihatāni
8. Fourteen thousand Rākṣasas of terrible deeds were slain by sharp arrows from a human who fought on foot.
खरश्च निहतः संख्ये दूषणश्च निपातितः ।
हत्वा त्रिशिरसं चापि निर्भया दण्डकाः कृताः ॥९॥
9. kharaśca nihataḥ saṃkhye dūṣaṇaśca nipātitaḥ ,
hatvā triśirasaṃ cāpi nirbhayā daṇḍakāḥ kṛtāḥ.
9. kharaḥ ca nihataḥ saṅkhye dūṣaṇaḥ ca nipātitaḥ
hatvā triśirasam ca api nirbhayāḥ daṇḍakāḥ kṛtāḥ
9. kharaḥ ca saṅkhye nihataḥ dūṣaṇaḥ ca nipātitaḥ
triśirasam ca api hatvā daṇḍakāḥ nirbhayāḥ kṛtāḥ
9. Khara was slain in battle, and Dūṣaṇa was struck down. Furthermore, after Triśiras was also killed, the Daṇḍaka region (or its inhabitants) was rendered free from fear.
पित्रा निरस्तः क्रुद्धेन सभार्यः क्षीणजीवितः ।
स हन्ता तस्य सैन्यस्य रामः क्षत्रियपांसनः ॥१०॥
10. pitrā nirastaḥ kruddhena sabhāryaḥ kṣīṇajīvitaḥ ,
sa hantā tasya sainyasya rāmaḥ kṣatriyapāṃsanaḥ.
10. pitrā nirastaḥ kruddhena sabhāryaḥ kṣīṇajīvitaḥ
sa hantā tasya sainyasya rāmaḥ kṣatriyapāṃsanaḥ
10. kruddhena pitrā sabhāryaḥ kṣīṇajīvitaḥ nirastaḥ
saḥ rāmaḥ tasya sainyasya hantā kṣatriyapāṃsanaḥ
10. Expelled by his angry father, accompanied by his wife, and with a diminished livelihood - he is that Rāma, the destroyer of that army, the disgrace of kṣatriyas.
अशीलः कर्कशस्तीक्ष्णो मूर्खो लुब्धो ऽजितेन्द्रियः ।
त्यक्तधर्मस्त्वधर्मात्मा भूतानामहिते रतः ॥११॥
11. aśīlaḥ karkaśastīkṣṇo mūrkho lubdho'jitendriyaḥ ,
tyaktadharmastvadharmātmā bhūtānāmahite rataḥ.
11. aśīlaḥ karkaśaḥ tīkṣṇaḥ mūrkhaḥ lubdhaḥ ajitendriyaḥ
tyaktadharmaḥ tu adharmātmā bhūtānām ahite rataḥ
11. saḥ aśīlaḥ karkaśaḥ tīkṣṇaḥ mūrkhaḥ lubdhaḥ ajitendriyaḥ
tyaktadharmaḥ tu adharmātmā bhūtānām ahite rataḥ
11. He is ill-behaved, harsh, fierce, foolish, greedy, and unable to control his senses. Having abandoned the natural law (dharma), he possesses an unrighteous character, constantly engaged in harming living beings.
येन वैरं विनारण्ये सत्त्वमाश्रित्य केवलम् ।
कर्णनासापहारेण भगिनी मे विरूपिता ॥१२॥
12. yena vairaṃ vināraṇye sattvamāśritya kevalam ,
karṇanāsāpahāreṇa bhaginī me virūpitā.
12. yena vairam vinā araṇye sattvam āśritya
kevalam karṇanāsāpahāreṇa bhaginī me virūpitā
12. yena araṇye vairaṃ vinā kevalam sattvam
āśritya me bhaginī karṇanāsāpahāreṇa virūpitā
12. My sister was disfigured in the forest by him who, without any prior enmity and relying solely on his strength, cut off her ears and nose.
तस्य भार्यां जनस्थानात् सीतां सुरसुतोपमाम् ।
आनयिष्यामि विक्रम्य सहायस्तत्र मे भव ॥१३॥
13. tasya bhāryāṃ janasthānāt sītāṃ surasutopamām ,
ānayiṣyāmi vikramya sahāyastatra me bhava.
13. tasya bhāryām janasthānāt sītām surasutopamām
ānayiṣyāmi vikramya sahāyaḥ tatra me bhava
13. tatra tasya surasutopamām sītām bhāryām janasthānāt
vikramya ānayiṣyāmi; tvam me sahāyaḥ bhava
13. I will seize and bring his wife, Sita, who is like a divine maiden, from Janasthana. Please be my helper (sahāya) in that endeavor.
त्वया ह्यहं सहायेन पार्श्वस्थेन महाबल ।
भ्रातृभिश्च सुरान्युद्धे समग्रान्नाभिचिन्तये ॥१४॥
14. tvayā hyahaṃ sahāyena pārśvasthena mahābala ,
bhrātṛbhiśca surānyuddhe samagrānnābhicintaye.
14. tvayā hi aham sahāyena pārśvasthena mahābala
bhrātṛbhiḥ ca surān yuddhe samagrān na abhicintaye
14. mahābala hi tvayā pārśvasthena sahāyena aham
yuddhe samagrān surān ca bhrātṛbhiḥ na abhicintaye
14. Indeed, O mighty one (mahābala), with you as my helper (sahāya) standing by my side, I would not fear all the gods and their brothers in battle.
तत् सहायो भव त्वं मे समर्थो ह्यसि राक्षस ।
वीर्ये युद्धे च दर्पे च न ह्यस्ति सदृशस्तव ॥१५॥
15. tat sahāyo bhava tvaṃ me samartho hyasi rākṣasa ,
vīrye yuddhe ca darpe ca na hyasti sadṛśastava.
15. tat sahāyaḥ bhava tvam me samarthaḥ hi asi rākṣasa
vīrye yuddhe ca darpe ca na hi asti sadṛśaḥ tava
15. tat tvam me sahāyaḥ bhava; hi rākṣasa,
samarthaḥ asi; hi tava sadṛśaḥ vīrye ca yuddhe ca darpe ca na asti
15. Therefore, you become my helper, for you are indeed capable, O Rakshasa. Truly, there is no one equal to you in valor, in battle, or in arrogance.
एतदर्थमहं प्राप्तस्त्वत्समीपं निशाचर ।
शृणु तत् कर्म साहाय्ये यत् कार्यं वचनान्मम ॥१६॥
16. etadarthamahaṃ prāptastvatsamīpaṃ niśācara ,
śṛṇu tat karma sāhāyye yat kāryaṃ vacanānmama.
16. etadartham aham prāptaḥ tvatsamīpam niśācara |
śṛṇu tat karma sāhāyye yat kāryam vacanāt mama
16. niśācara etadartham aham tvatsamīpam prāptaḥ
mama vacanāt tat yat sāhāyye kāryam karma śṛṇu
16. For this very purpose, O night-wanderer, I have come near you. Listen to that task (karma) which must be done as assistance (sāhāyye) according to my words.
सौवर्णस्त्वं मृगो भूत्वा चित्रो रजतबिन्दुभिः ।
आश्रमे तस्य रामस्य सीतायाः प्रमुखे चर ॥१७॥
17. sauvarṇastvaṃ mṛgo bhūtvā citro rajatabindubhiḥ ,
āśrame tasya rāmasya sītāyāḥ pramukhe cara.
17. sauvarṇaḥ tvam mṛgaḥ bhūtvā citraḥ rajatabindubhiḥ
| āśrame tasya Rāmasya Sītāyāḥ pramukhe cara
17. tvam sauvarṇaḥ rajatabindubhiḥ citraḥ mṛgaḥ
bhūtvā tasya Rāmasya āśrame Sītāyāḥ pramukhe cara
17. You, becoming a golden deer, adorned with silver spots, should wander in that hermitage (āśrame) of Rāma, in front of Sītā.
त्वां तु निःसंशयं सीता दृष्ट्वा तु मृगरूपिणम् ।
गृह्यतामिति भर्तारं लक्ष्मणं चाभिधास्यति ॥१८॥
18. tvāṃ tu niḥsaṃśayaṃ sītā dṛṣṭvā tu mṛgarūpiṇam ,
gṛhyatāmiti bhartāraṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ cābhidhāsyati.
18. tvām tu niḥsaṃśayam Sītā dṛṣṭvā tu mṛgarūpiṇam |
gṛhyatām iti bhartāram Lakṣmaṇam ca abhidhāsyati
18. Sītā tu tvām mṛgarūpiṇam niḥsaṃśayam dṛṣṭvā tu
bhartāram Lakṣmaṇam ca gṛhyatām iti abhidhāsyati
18. Sītā, having surely seen you in the form of a deer, will certainly say to her husband and Lakṣmaṇa, 'He must be captured!'
ततस्तयोरपाये तु शून्ये सीतां यथासुखम् ।
निराबाधो हरिष्यामि राहुश्चन्द्रप्रभामिव ॥१९॥
19. tatastayorapāye tu śūnye sītāṃ yathāsukham ,
nirābādho hariṣyāmi rāhuścandraprabhāmiva.
19. tataḥ tayoḥ apāye tu śūnye Sītām yathāsukham
| nirābādhaḥ hariṣyāmi Rāhuḥ candraprabhām iva
19. tataḥ tu tayoḥ apāye śūnye nirābādhaḥ Sītām
yathāsukham hariṣyāmi Rāhuḥ candraprabhām iva
19. Then, when those two are gone, in the deserted place, I will abduct Sītā as I please, unimpeded, just as Rāhu seizes the moon's radiance.
ततः पश्चात् सुखं रामे भार्याहरणकर्शिते ।
विस्रब्धं प्रहरिष्यामि कृतार्थेनान्तरात्मना ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ paścāt sukhaṃ rāme bhāryāharaṇakarśite ,
visrabdhaṃ prahariṣyāmi kṛtārthenāntarātmanā.
20. tataḥ paścāt sukham rāme bhāryāharaṇakarśite
visrabdham prahariṣyāmi kṛtārthena antarātmanā
20. tataḥ paścāt bhāryāharaṇakarśite rāme kṛtārthena

20. Afterward, with my inner self (ātman) having achieved its purpose, I will confidently strike Rama, who will be weakened by the abduction of his wife.
तस्य रामकथां श्रुत्वा मारीचस्य महात्मनः ।
शुष्कं समभवद्वक्त्रं परित्रस्तो बभूव च ॥२१॥
21. tasya rāmakathāṃ śrutvā mārīcasya mahātmanaḥ ,
śuṣkaṃ samabhavadvaktraṃ paritrasto babhūva ca.
21. tasya rāmakathām śrutvā mārīcasya mahātmanaḥ
śuṣkam samabhavat vaktram paritrastaḥ babhūva ca
21. mahātmanaḥ mārīcasya tasya rāmakathām śrutvā
vaktram śuṣkam samabhavat ca paritrastaḥ babhūva
21. Having heard that story of Rama from the great-souled Maricha, [Ravana's] face became dry and he became utterly terrified.
स रावणं त्रस्तविषण्णचेता महावने रामपराक्रमज्ञः ।
कृताञ्जलिस्तत्त्वमुवाच वाक्यं हितं च तस्मै हितमात्मनश्च ॥२२॥
22. sa rāvaṇaṃ trastaviṣaṇṇacetā mahāvane rāmaparākramajñaḥ ,
kṛtāñjalistattvamuvāca vākyaṃ hitaṃ ca tasmai hitamātmanaśca.
22. saḥ rāvaṇam trastaviṣaṇṇacetāḥ
mahāvane rāmaparākramajñaḥ
kṛtāñjaliḥ tattvam uvāca vākyam
hitam ca tasmai hitam ātmanaḥ ca

22. With a terrified and dejected mind, knowing Rama's valor, he (Maricha) stood in the great forest with folded hands and spoke words of truth that were beneficial both to Ravana and to himself.
