Thus addressed, Kaikeyī, her face inflamed with anger, sighed a long, hot breath and then spoke these words to Mantharā.
अद्य राममितः क्षिप्रं वनं प्रस्थापयाम्यहम् ।

Today, I will quickly send Rama from here to the forest. I will immediately anoint Bharata as the crown prince.
इदं त्विदानीं संपश्य केनोपायेन मन्थरे ।

But now, O Manthara, consider this: by what means Bharata may obtain the kingdom, and Rama should not, by any means.

Thus addressed by that queen, Manthara, who was evil-minded and intended harm towards Rama, spoke these words to Kaikeyi.
हन्तेदानीं प्रवक्ष्यामि कैकेयि श्रूयतां च मे ।
यथा ते भरतो राज्यं पुत्रः प्राप्स्यति केवलम् ॥५॥

Now, O Kaikeyi, I will tell you, so listen to me: how your son Bharata alone will obtain the kingdom.

Having heard such words from that Mantharā, Kaikeyī, rising somewhat from her well-spread bed, spoke this.
कथय त्वं ममोपायं केनोपायेन मन्थरे ।

O Mantharā, tell me the means by which Bharata may obtain the kingdom, and by no means Rāma.

Thus addressed by that queen (devī), Mantharā, the evil-minded hunchback, intent on harming Rāma, spoke these words.
तव देवासुरे युद्धे सह राजर्षिभिः पतिः ।
अगच्छत्त्वामुपादाय देवराजस्य साह्यकृत् ॥९॥

9. tava devāsure yuddhe saha rājarṣibhiḥ patiḥ ,

In the battle between the gods and asuras (devāsura), your husband, accompanied by the royal sages, went, taking you along, to assist the king of the gods.
दिशमास्थाय कैकेयि दक्षिणां दण्डकान्प्रति ।
वैजयन्तमिति ख्यातं पुरं यत्र तिमिध्वजः ॥१०॥

10. diśamāsthāya kaikeyi dakṣiṇāṃ daṇḍakānprati ,

O Kaikeyi, heading south towards the Daṇḍaka forest, there is a city renowned as Vaijayanta, where Timidhvaja resides.
स शम्बर इति ख्यातः शतमायो महासुरः ।
ददौ शक्रस्य संग्रामं देवसंघैरनिर्जितः ॥११॥

11. sa śambara iti khyātaḥ śatamāyo mahāsuraḥ ,

That great demon (asura), known as Śambara, who possessed a hundred magical illusions (māyā), was undefeated even by the hosts of gods, and he challenged Indra to battle.
तस्मिन्महति संग्रामे राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
अपवाह्य त्वया देवि संग्रामान्नष्टचेतनः ॥१२॥

12. tasminmahati saṃgrāme rājā daśarathastadā ,
apavāhya tvayā devi saṃgrāmānnaṣṭacetanaḥ.

O Queen, in that great battle, King Daśaratha, having lost consciousness, was then carried away from the battlefield by you.
तत्रापि विक्षतः शस्त्रैः पतिस्ते रक्षितस्त्वया ।
तुष्टेन तेन दत्तौ ते द्वौ वरौ शुभदर्शने ॥१३॥

13. tatrāpi vikṣataḥ śastraiḥ patiste rakṣitastvayā ,
tuṣṭena tena dattau te dvau varau śubhadarśane.

Even there, your husband, wounded by weapons, was protected by you. Pleased by this, he granted you two boons, O beautiful one.
स त्वयोक्तः पतिर्देवि यदेच्छेयं तदा वरौ ।
गृह्णीयामिति तत्तेन तथेत्युक्तं महात्मना ।
अनभिज्ञा ह्यहं देवि त्वयैव कथितं पुरा ॥१४॥

14. sa tvayoktaḥ patirdevi yadeccheyaṃ tadā varau ,

14.
O queen, you (Kaikeyi) told that husband (Dasaratha), 'When I desire, I shall accept two boons.' That was then affirmed with 'So be it' by that great soul (Dasaratha). Indeed, O queen, I (Manthara) was unaware (of the significance); it was you yourself who explained it to me earlier.
तौ वरौ याच भर्तारं भरतस्याभिषेचनम् ।
प्रव्राजनं च रामस्य त्वं वर्षाणि चतुर्दश ॥१५॥

You (Kaikeyi) should ask your husband for those two boons: the consecration (abhiṣecanam) of Bharata (as king), and the exile (pravrājanm) of Rama for fourteen years.
क्रोधागारं प्रविश्याद्य क्रुद्धेवाश्वपतेः सुते ।
शेष्वानन्तर्हितायां त्वं भूमौ मलिनवासिनी ।
मा स्मैनं प्रत्युदीक्षेथा मा चैनमभिभाषथाः ॥१६॥

16. krodhāgāraṃ praviśyādya kruddhevāśvapateḥ sute ,
śeṣvānantarhitāyāṃ tvaṃ bhūmau malinavāsinī ,
mā smainaṃ pratyudīkṣethā mā cainamabhibhāṣathāḥ.

krodhāgāram praviśya adya kruddhā iva
aśvapateḥ sute śeṣva anantarhitāyām tvam

prati-ud-īkṣethāḥ mā ca enam abhibhāṣathāḥ

aśvapateḥ sute adya krodhāgāram praviśya

16.
O daughter of Aśvapati (Kaikeyi), entering the anger-chamber today, as if enraged, you yourself, clad in dirty garments, should lie down on the bare (anantarhitāyām) ground. Do not look at him, and do not speak to him.
दयिता त्वं सदा भर्तुरत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ।
त्वत्कृते च महाराजो विशेदपि हुताशनम् ॥१७॥

You are always dear to your husband; I have no doubt about this. And for your sake, the great king would even enter the fire (hutāśanam).
न त्वां क्रोधयितुं शक्तो न क्रुद्धां प्रत्युदीक्षितुम् ।
तव प्रियार्थं राजा हि प्राणानपि परित्यजेत् ॥१८॥

18. na tvāṃ krodhayituṃ śakto na kruddhāṃ pratyudīkṣitum ,

18.
He is not capable of making you angry, nor can he bear to look upon you when you are in a rage. Indeed, the king would even sacrifice his own life for your beloved sake.

मन्दस्वभावे बुध्यस्व सौभाग्यबलमात्मनः ॥१९॥

19. na hyatikramituṃ śaktastava vākyaṃ mahīpatiḥ ,

Indeed, the king is unable to transgress your word. O dull-witted one, realize the power of your own good fortune (saubhāgya).

King Daśaratha would offer jewels, pearls, gold, and various other precious gems. Do not, however, set your heart on those things.

O highly revered lady (mahābhāge), remind him of those two boons which King Dasharatha granted during the war between the gods and demons. May that objective (artha) not escape you.

But when Rāghava himself, having uplifted you, grants you a boon, then you should choose this very boon: to establish a great king.

Send Rāma into exile in the forest for nine and five years. Let Bharata, the best of rulers, be made king on the earth.

By the time Rāma returns from the forest, your son will by then be firmly established. And he will have gathered supporters and be resolute, along with his friends.

O fearless one, I consider your counsel opportune. Restrain the king from his resolve concerning Rama's coronation and make him abandon it.

Being thus persuaded by her (Manthara) that a calamity was in fact a benefit, Kaikeyi, joyful and convinced, then said this to Manthara.

There are many ill-formed, hunchbacked, crooked, and exceedingly sinful women, but you, bent gracefully like a lotus by the wind, are delightful to behold.

Having adorned yourself with auspicious garments, O god of gods, you, who are incomparable, will move about with a face that rivals the moon in beauty. You will attain a supreme state, displaying your triumph before your enemies.

Then, Kaikeyī, whose complexion was like gold, having come under the sway of the hunchback's words, sat on the ground there and said this to Mantharā.

O hunchback, you will announce me dead here to the king, or else, when Rāghava reaches the forest, Bharata will obtain the kingdom.

After speaking these exceedingly harsh words and removing all her ornaments, the beautiful Kaikeyi then lay down on the ground, uncovered by any bedspread, like a fallen Kinnari.

With her face veiled by the gloom of intense fury, and having cast off her finest garlands and ornaments, that queen became dejected, just like the sky covered in darkness with its stars obscured.
