राम दाशरथे वीर वीर्यं ते श्रूयते ऽधुतम् ।
धनुषो भेदनं चैव निखिलेन मया श्रुतम् ॥१॥

1. rāma dāśarathe vīra vīryaṃ te śrūyate'dhutam ,

O Rāma, son of Daśaratha, O hero, your unshakeable prowess is renowned. And indeed, I have heard in full about the breaking of the bow.
तदद्भुतमचिन्त्यं च भेदनं धनुषस्त्वया ।
तच्छ्रुत्वाहमनुप्राप्तो धनुर्गृह्यापरं शुभम् ॥२॥

2. tadadbhutamacintyaṃ ca bhedanaṃ dhanuṣastvayā ,

tat adbhutam acintyam ca bhedanam dhanuṣaḥ tvayā tat

tvayā tat dhanuṣaḥ bhedanam adbhutam ca acintyam tat

That breaking of the bow by you is amazing and inconceivable. Having heard of that (deed), I have arrived, carrying another auspicious bow.
तदिदं घोरसंकाशं जामदग्न्यं महद्धनुः ।
पूरयस्व शरेणैव स्वबलं दर्शयस्व च ॥३॥

3. tadidaṃ ghorasaṃkāśaṃ jāmadagnyaṃ mahaddhanuḥ ,

This great bow, dreadful in appearance and belonging to Jamadagni, string it with an arrow and indeed demonstrate your own strength.
तदहं ते बलं दृष्ट्वा धनुषो ऽस्य प्रपूरणे ।
द्वन्द्वयुद्धं प्रदास्यामि वीर्यश्लाघ्यमिदं तव ॥४॥

4. tadahaṃ te balaṃ dṛṣṭvā dhanuṣo'sya prapūraṇe ,

Then, having seen your strength in the stringing of this bow, I will offer you a duel, which will be a testament to your commendable valor (vīrya).

Having heard those words of his, King Dasharatha then, with a dejected and distressed face, and with folded hands, spoke.
क्षत्ररोषात् प्रशान्तस्त्वं ब्राह्मणस्य महायशाः ।
बालानां मम पुत्राणामभयं दातुमर्हसि ॥६॥

6. kṣatraroṣāt praśāntastvaṃ brāhmaṇasya mahāyaśāḥ ,

O greatly renowned one, you who have become peaceful (praśānta) after your rage against the kṣatriyas, and are now of the nature of a Brahmin, you ought to grant protection (abhayam) to my young sons.

You, born in the lineage of the Bhargavas, who are known for their observance of the vow of Vedic study (svādhyāya), having made a solemn vow to Indra (sahasrākṣa), then laid down your weapons.
स त्वं धर्मपरो भूत्वा काश्यपाय वसुंधराम् ।
दत्त्वा वनमुपागम्य महेन्द्रकृतकेतनः ॥८॥

8. sa tvaṃ dharmaparo bhūtvā kāśyapāya vasuṃdharām ,
dattvā vanamupāgamya mahendrakṛtaketanaḥ.

Thus, you, having become devoted to righteousness (dharma), having given the earth to Kaśyapa and having retired to the forest, made the Mahendra mountain your dwelling.
मम सर्वविनाशाय संप्राप्तस्त्वं महामुने ।
न चैकस्मिन् हते रामे सर्वे जीवामहे वयम् ॥९॥

9. mama sarvavināśāya saṃprāptastvaṃ mahāmune ,
na caikasmin hate rāme sarve jīvāmahe vayam.

O great sage, you have arrived for my complete ruin. If only Rama is slain, we all cannot survive.
ब्रुवत्येवं दशरथे जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान् ।
अनादृत्यैव तद्वाक्यं राममेवाभ्यभाषत ॥१०॥

10. bruvatyevaṃ daśarathe jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān ,

While Dasharatha was speaking thus, the mighty Jamadagnya (Parashurama), completely disregarding those words, addressed only Rama.
इमे द्वे धनुषी श्रेष्ठे दिव्ये लोकाभिविश्रुते ।
दृढे बलवती मुख्ये सुकृते विश्वकर्मणा ॥११॥

These two excellent, divine, and world-renowned bows are strong, powerful, foremost, and skillfully crafted by Viśvakarma.
अतिसृष्टं सुरैरेकं त्र्यम्बकाय युयुत्सवे ।
त्रिपुरघ्नं नरश्रेष्ठ भग्नं काकुत्स्थ यत्त्वया ॥१२॥

12. atisṛṣṭaṃ surairekaṃ tryambakāya yuyutsave ,

One of them was given by the gods to Tryambaka (Shiva), who was eager to fight – that destroyer of the three cities (Tripuraghnam), O best among men, O Kakutstha, which was broken by you.
इदं द्वितीयं दुर्धर्षं विष्णोर्दत्तं सुरोत्तमैः ।
समानसारं काकुत्स्थ रौद्रेण धनुषा त्विदम् ॥१३॥

O Kakutstha (Rama), this second formidable bow, which was given by the best of gods to Vishnu, is indeed of equal power to Rudra's (Śiva's) bow.
तदा तु देवताः सर्वाः पृच्छन्ति स्म पितामहम् ।
शितिकण्ठस्य विष्णोश्च बलाबलनिरीक्षया ॥१४॥

14. tadā tu devatāḥ sarvāḥ pṛcchanti sma pitāmaham ,
śitikaṇṭhasya viṣṇośca balābalanirīkṣayā.

Then, all the deities indeed asked the Grandfather (Brahma) with the intention of observing the relative strengths and weaknesses of both Śitikāṇṭha (Śiva) and Vishnu.
अभिप्रायं तु विज्ञाय देवतानां पितामहः ।
विरोधं जनयामास तयोः सत्यवतां वरः ॥१५॥

15. abhiprāyaṃ tu vijñāya devatānāṃ pitāmahaḥ ,

But having understood the intention of the deities, the Grandfather (Brahma), who is the best among the truthful ones, then created a conflict between the two of them.
विरोधे च महद् युद्धमभवद् रोमहर्षणम् ।
शितिकण्ठस्य विष्णोश्च परस्परजयैषिणोः ॥१६॥

16. virodhe ca mahad yuddhamabhavad romaharṣaṇam ,

And in that conflict, a great and hair-raising battle occurred between Śitikāṇṭha (Śiva) and Vishnu, both of whom were desirous of mutual victory.
तदा तज्जृम्भितं शैवं धनुर्भीमपराक्रमम् ।
हुंकारेण महादेवः स्तम्भितो ऽथ त्रिलोचनः ॥१७॥

17. tadā tajjṛmbhitaṃ śaivaṃ dhanurbhīmaparākramam ,
huṃkāreṇa mahādevaḥ stambhito'tha trilocanaḥ.

Then that Śaiva bow, of terrible might, was drawn. Thereupon, Mahādeva, the three-eyed one, was paralyzed by a roar (huṃkāra).
देवैस्तदा समागम्य सर्षिसंघैः सचारणैः ।
याचितौ प्रशमं तत्र जग्मतुस्तौ सुरोत्तमौ ॥१८॥

18. devaistadā samāgamya sarṣisaṃghaiḥ sacāraṇaiḥ ,

Then, having assembled there, the gods, along with the hosts of sages and the Charanas, implored for peace. Thereupon, those two supreme gods attained peace.
जृम्भितं तद्धनुर्दृष्ट्वा शैवं विष्णुपराक्रमैः ।
अधिकं मेनिरे विष्णुं देवाः सर्षिगणास्तदा ॥१९॥

19. jṛmbhitaṃ taddhanurdṛṣṭvā śaivaṃ viṣṇuparākramaiḥ ,

jṛmbhitam tat dhanuḥ dṛṣṭvā śaivam viṣṇuparākramaiḥ

tada devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ viṣṇuparākramaiḥ tat

19.
Having seen that Śaiva bow stretched by the might (parākrama) of Vishnu, the gods, along with the hosts of sages, then considered Vishnu to be superior.
धनू रुद्रस्तु संक्रुद्धो विदेहेषु महायशाः ।
देवरातस्य राजर्षेर्ददौ हस्ते ससायकम् ॥२०॥

20. dhanū rudrastu saṃkruddho videheṣu mahāyaśāḥ ,

But Rudra, the highly renowned one (mahāyaśas), greatly angered, gave that bow (dhanu) with an arrow into the hand of the royal sage (rājarṣi) Devarāta in Videha.

O Rāma, Viṣṇu (viṣṇu) gave this excellent bow, which belongs to Viṣṇu (viṣṇu) and conquers enemy cities, as a sacred trust to Ṛcīka, the descendant of Bhṛgu.

But the highly effulgent Ṛcīka bestowed that divine bow upon my father, the great-souled Jamadagni, who was his irresistible son.

When my father, endowed with the strength of his asceticism (tapas), had laid down his weapons, Arjuna, having adopted a base mentality, brought about his death.
वधमप्रतिरूपं तु पितुः श्रुत्वा सुदारुणम् ।
क्षत्रमुत्सादयं रोषाज्जातं जातमनेकशः ॥२४॥

But having heard of the unseemly and extremely cruel murder of my father, I repeatedly annihilated the Kṣatriya (kṣatra) class, wherever it arose, out of rage.
पृथिवीं चाखिलां प्राप्य काश्यपाय महात्मने ।
यज्ञस्यान्ते तदा राम दक्षिणां पुण्यकर्मणे ॥२५॥

Then, O Rāma, having obtained the entire earth, he gave it as a donation (dakṣiṇā) to the great-souled Kaśyapa, who performs meritorious deeds, at the end of the Vedic ritual (yajña).

श्रुतवान्धनुषो भेदं ततो ऽहं द्रुतमागतः ॥२६॥

Having given (the earth to Kaśyapa), I, who am like Indra in dwelling and endowed with the power of asceticism (tapas), then heard of the bow's breaking, and quickly arrived.
तदिदं वैष्णवं राम पितृपैतामहं महत् ।
क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य गृह्णीष्व धनुरुत्तमम् ॥२७॥

O Rāma, honoring the natural law (dharma) of a warrior, take up this great, excellent, ancestral, Viṣṇu-related bow.
योजयस्व धनुः श्रेष्ठे शरं परपुरंजयम् ।
यदि शक्नोषि काकुत्स्थ द्वन्द्वं दास्यामि ते ततः ॥२८॥
