दृष्टाश्रमपदं शून्यं रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
रहितां पर्णशालां च विध्वस्तान्यासनानि च ॥१॥

1. Rama, the son of Dasaratha, having observed the empty hermitage, as well as the leaf-hut devoid of its occupant, and the seats destroyed.
अदृष्ट्वा तत्र वैदेहीं संनिरीक्ष्य च सर्वशः ।
उवाच रामः प्राक्रुश्य प्रगृह्य रुचिरौ भुजौ ॥२॥
2. adṛṣṭvā tatra vaidehīṃ saṃnirīkṣya ca sarvaśaḥ ,
uvāca rāmaḥ prākruśya pragṛhya rucirau bhujau.

2. Not having found Vaidehi (Sītā) there, and having thoroughly searched everywhere, Rama spoke, crying out in anguish and seizing his two beautiful arms.
क्व नु लक्ष्मण वैदेही कं वा देशमितो गता ।
केनाहृता वा सौमित्रे भक्षिता केन वा प्रिया ॥३॥
3. kva nu lakṣmaṇa vaidehī kaṃ vā deśamito gatā ,
kenāhṛtā vā saumitre bhakṣitā kena vā priyā.

3. O Lakshmana, where, pray, is Vaidehi? Or to which region has she gone from here? O Saumitra, by whom has my beloved (Sītā) been carried away, or by whom has she been devoured?
वृष्केणावार्य यदि मां सीते हसितुमिच्छसि ।
अलं ते हसितेनाद्य मां भजस्व सुदुःखितम् ॥४॥
4. vṛṣkeṇāvārya yadi māṃ sīte hasitumicchasi ,
alaṃ te hasitenādya māṃ bhajasva suduḥkhitam.
4. vṛṣkeṇa avārya yadi mām sīte hasitum icchasi
alam te hasitena adya mām bhajasva suduḥkhitam
4. sīte yadi vṛṣkeṇa avārya mām hasitum icchasi,

4. O Sītā, if you wish to mock me by concealing yourself behind a tree, enough of this laughter now! Please approach me, who is deeply distressed.
यैः सह क्रीडसे सीते विश्वस्तैर्मृगपोतकैः ।
एते हीनास्त्वया सौम्ये ध्यायन्त्यस्राविलेक्षणाः ॥५॥
5. yaiḥ saha krīḍase sīte viśvastairmṛgapotakaiḥ ,
ete hīnāstvayā saumye dhyāyantyasrāvilekṣaṇāḥ.

5. O Sītā, those trusting fawn-children with whom you used to play are now, O gentle one, deprived of you, meditating with tear-filled eyes.
मृतं शोकेन महता सीताहरणजेन माम् ।
परलोके महाराजो नूनं द्रक्ष्यति मे पिता ॥६॥
6. mṛtaṃ śokena mahatā sītāharaṇajena mām ,
paraloke mahārājo nūnaṃ drakṣyati me pitā.
6. mṛtam śokena mahatā sītāharaṇajena mām
paraloke mahārājaḥ nūnam drakṣyati me pitā
6. me pitā mahārājaḥ nūnam paraloke sītāharaṇajena
mahatā śokena mṛtam mām drakṣyati
6. Surely, my father, the great king, will see me in the next world, dead from the immense sorrow born of Sītā's abduction.
कथं प्रतिज्ञां संश्रुत्य मया त्वमभियोजितः ।
अपूरयित्वा तं कालं मत्सकाशमिहागतः ॥७॥
7. kathaṃ pratijñāṃ saṃśrutya mayā tvamabhiyojitaḥ ,
apūrayitvā taṃ kālaṃ matsakāśamihāgataḥ.
7. katham pratijñām saṃśrutya mayā tvam abhiyojitaḥ
apūrayitvā tam kālam matsakāśam iha āgataḥ
7. mayā pratijñām saṃśrutya tvam katham abhiyojitaḥ
tam kālam apūrayitvā iha matsakāśam āgataḥ
7. How is it that, having made a solemn promise, you have come here to me, without fulfilling that allotted time for which you were dispatched by me?
कामवृत्तमनार्यं मां मृषावादिनमेव च ।
धिक् त्वामिति परे लोके व्यक्तं वक्ष्यति मे पिता ॥८॥
8. kāmavṛttamanāryaṃ māṃ mṛṣāvādinameva ca ,
dhik tvāmiti pare loke vyaktaṃ vakṣyati me pitā.
8. kāmavṛttam anāryam mām mṛṣāvādinam eva ca dhik
tvā iti pare loke vyaktam vakṣyati me pitā
8. me pitā pare loke vyaktam "kāmavṛttam anāryam
mṛṣāvādinam eva ca mām dhik tvā" iti vakṣyati
8. "Shame on you!" - my father will clearly say in the next world to me, the one who acted impulsively, ignobly, and was certainly a liar.
विवशं शोकसंतप्तं दीनं भग्नमनोरथम् ।
मामिहोत्सृज्य करुणं कीर्तिर्नरमिवानृजुम् ॥९॥
9. vivaśaṃ śokasaṃtaptaṃ dīnaṃ bhagnamanoratham ,
māmihotsṛjya karuṇaṃ kīrtirnaramivānṛjum.
9. vivaśam śokasaṃtaptam dīnam bhagnamanoratham
mām iha utsṛjya karuṇam kīrtiḥ naram iva anṛjum
9. iha mām vivaśam śokasaṃtaptam dīnam bhagnamanoratham
karuṇam utsṛjya kīrtiḥ anṛjum naram iva
9. Abandoning me here - who am helpless, tormented by grief, miserable, with shattered hopes, and pitiable - just as renown (kīrti) abandons a dishonest man.
क्व गच्छसि वरारोहे मामुत्सृज्य सुमध्यमे ।
त्वया विरहितश्चाहं मोक्ष्ये जीवितमात्मनः ॥१०॥
10. kva gacchasi varārohe māmutsṛjya sumadhyame ,
tvayā virahitaścāhaṃ mokṣye jīvitamātmanaḥ.
10. kva gacchasi varārohe mām utsṛjya sumadhyame
tvayā virahitaḥ ca aham mokṣye jīvitam ātmanaḥ
10. varārohe sumadhyame mām utsṛjya kva gacchasi
tvayā virahitaḥ ca aham ātmanaḥ jīvitam mokṣye
10. O lady with beautiful thighs (varārohe), O slender-waisted one (sumadhyame), where are you going, abandoning me? Separated from you, I shall surely give up my own life (ātman).
इतीव विलपन् रामः सीतादर्शनलालसः ।
न ददर्श सुदुःखार्तो राघवो जनकात्मजाम् ॥११॥
11. itīva vilapan rāmaḥ sītādarśanalālasaḥ ,
na dadarśa suduḥkhārto rāghavo janakātmajām.
11. iti iva vilapan rāmaḥ sītādarśanalālasaḥ na
dadarśa suduḥkhārtaḥ rāghavaḥ janakātmajām
11. rāmaḥ sītādarśanalālasaḥ suduḥkhārtaḥ rāghavaḥ

11. Lamenting thus, as if, Rama, longing for the sight of Sita, and deeply distressed, the descendant of Raghu (Rāghava) did not see Janaka's daughter (Sita).
अनासादयमानं तं सीतां दशरथात्मजम् ।
पङ्कमासाद्य विपुलं सीदन्तमिव कुञ्जरम् ।
लक्ष्मणो राममत्यर्थमुवाच हितकाम्यया ॥१२॥
12. anāsādayamānaṃ taṃ sītāṃ daśarathātmajam ,
paṅkamāsādya vipulaṃ sīdantamiva kuñjaram ,
lakṣmaṇo rāmamatyarthamuvāca hitakāmyayā.
12. anāsādayamānam tam sītām
daśarathātmajam paṅkam āsādya vipulam
sīdantam iva kuñjaram lakṣmaṇaḥ
rāmam atyartham uvāca hitakāmyayā
12. lakṣmaṇaḥ hitakāmyayā atyartham

sītām anāsādayamānam vipulam paṅkam
āsādya sīdantam kuñjaram iva
12. Lakshmana, out of a desire for his welfare, spoke greatly to Rama, the son of Dasaratha, who was unable to find Sita, and who was like an elephant sinking after having fallen into vast mud.
मा विषादं महाबाहो कुरु यत्नं मया सह ।
इदं च हि वनं शूर बहुकन्दरशोभितम् ॥१३॥
13. mā viṣādaṃ mahābāho kuru yatnaṃ mayā saha ,
idaṃ ca hi vanaṃ śūra bahukandaraśobhitam.
13. mā viṣādam mahābāho kuru yatnam mayā saha
idam ca hi vanam śūra bahukandaraśobhitam
13. mahābāho mā viṣādam kuru mayā saha yatnam kuru
hi ca śūra idam vanam bahukandaraśobhitam asti
13. O mighty-armed one, do not despair! Make an effort with me, for this forest, O hero, is indeed beautiful with many caves.
प्रियकाननसंचारा वनोन्मत्ता च मैथिली ।
सा वनं वा प्रविष्टा स्यान्नलिनीं वा सुपुष्पिताम् ॥१४॥
14. priyakānanasaṃcārā vanonmattā ca maithilī ,
sā vanaṃ vā praviṣṭā syānnalinīṃ vā supuṣpitām.
14. priyakānanasaṃcārā vanonmattā ca maithilī sā
vanam vā praviṣṭā syāt nalinīm vā supuṣpitām
14. maithilī priyakānanasaṃcārā ca vanonmattā [asti]
sā vanam vā supuṣpitām nalinīm vā praviṣṭā syāt
14. Sita (Maithilī) loves to roam in forests and is delighted by them. She might have entered a dense part of the forest, or perhaps a lotus pond blooming beautifully.
सरितं वापि संप्राप्ता मीनवञ्जुरसेविताम् ।
वित्रासयितुकामा वा लीना स्यात् कानने क्व चित् ।
जिज्ञासमाना वैदेही त्वां मां च पुरुषर्षभ ॥१५॥
15. saritaṃ vāpi saṃprāptā mīnavañjurasevitām ,
vitrāsayitukāmā vā līnā syāt kānane kva cit ,
jijñāsamānā vaidehī tvāṃ māṃ ca puruṣarṣabha.
15. saritam vā api saṃprāptā
mīnavañjurasevitām vitrāsayitukāmā vā līnā
syāt kānane kva cit jijñāsamānā
vaidehī tvām mām ca puruṣarṣabha
15. puruṣarṣabha vaidehī mīnavañjurasevitām
saritam vā api saṃprāptā syāt
vā vitrāsayitukāmā satī tvām mām ca
jijñāsamānā kvacit kānane līnā syāt
15. Or she might have reached a river teeming with fish and other aquatic creatures. Alternatively, perhaps Vaidehī (Sita) is hidden somewhere in the forest, wanting to frighten us, and curious about your and my reaction, O best of men.
तस्या ह्यन्वेषणे श्रीमन् क्षिप्रमेव यतावहे ।
वनं सर्वं विचिनुवो यत्र सा जनकात्मजा ।
मन्यसे यदि काकुत्स्थ मा स्म शोके मनः कृथाः ॥१६॥
16. tasyā hyanveṣaṇe śrīman kṣiprameva yatāvahe ,
vanaṃ sarvaṃ vicinuvo yatra sā janakātmajā ,
manyase yadi kākutstha mā sma śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
16. tasyāḥ hi anveṣaṇe śrīman kṣipram
eva yatāvahe vanam sarvam vicinuvaḥ
yatra sā janakātmajā manyase yadi
kākutstha mā sma śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
16. śrīman hi tasyāḥ anveṣaṇe kṣipram
eva yatāvahe yatra sā janakātmajā asti
sarvam vanam vicinuvaḥ kākutstha
yadi manyase śoke manaḥ mā sma kṛthāḥ
16. Therefore, O glorious one (Rama), let us quickly put forth our effort in her search. Let us search the entire forest where that daughter of Janaka (Sita) might be. If you agree, O descendant of Kakutstha, do not let your mind dwell in sorrow.
एवमुक्तस्तु सौहार्दाल् लक्ष्मणेन समाहितः ।
सह सौमित्रिणा रामो विचेतुमुपचक्रमे ।
तौ वनानि गिरींश्चैव सरितश्च सरांसि च ॥१७॥
17. evamuktastu sauhārdāl lakṣmaṇena samāhitaḥ ,
saha saumitriṇā rāmo vicetumupacakrame ,
tau vanāni girīṃścaiva saritaśca sarāṃsi ca.
17. evaṃ uktaḥ tu sauhārdāt lakṣmaṇena
samāhitaḥ | saha saumitriṇā rāmaḥ
vicetum upacakrame | tau vanāni
girīn ca eva saritaḥ ca sarāṃsi ca
17. lakṣmaṇena sauhārdāt evam uktaḥ tu
samāhitaḥ rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha
vicetum upacakrame tau vanāni ca
girīn eva ca saritaḥ ca sarāṃsi ca
17. Thus addressed by Lakṣmaṇa out of affection, and becoming composed, Rāma, together with Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), began to search. The two of them started searching the forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes.
निखिलेन विचिन्वन्तौ सीतां दशरथात्मजौ ।
तस्य शैलस्य सानूनि गुहाश्च शिखराणि च ॥१८॥
18. nikhilena vicinvantau sītāṃ daśarathātmajau ,
tasya śailasya sānūni guhāśca śikharāṇi ca.
18. nikhilena vicinvantau sītām daśarathātmajau
| tasya śailasya sānūni guhāḥ ca śikharāṇi ca
18. daśarathātmajau tau sītām nikhilena vicinvantau
tasya śailasya sānūni ca guhāḥ ca śikharāṇi ca
18. The two sons of Daśaratha thoroughly searched for Sītā, exploring the plateaus, caves, and peaks of that mountain.
निखिलेन विचिन्वन्तौ नैव तामभिजग्मतुः ।
विचित्य सर्वतः शैलं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. nikhilena vicinvantau naiva tāmabhijagmatuḥ ,
vicitya sarvataḥ śailaṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt.
19. nikhilena vicinvantau na eva tām abhijagmatuḥ |
vicitya sarvataḥ śailam rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
19. nikhilena vicinvantau api tām na eva abhijagmatuḥ
sarvataḥ śailam vicitya rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
19. Even after searching thoroughly, they did not find her. Having searched the mountain everywhere, Rāma spoke to Lakṣmaṇa.
नेह पश्यामि सौमित्रे वैदेहीं पर्वते शुभे ।
ततो दुःखाभिसंतप्तो लक्ष्मणो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. neha paśyāmi saumitre vaidehīṃ parvate śubhe ,
tato duḥkhābhisaṃtapto lakṣmaṇo vākyamabravīt.
20. na iha paśyāmi saumitre vaidehīm parvate śubhe |
tataḥ duḥkhābhisaṃtaptaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ vākyam abravīt
20. saumitre,
iha śubhe parvate vaidehīm na paśyāmi tataḥ duḥkhābhisaṃtaptaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ vākyam abravīt
20. "O Saumitri, I do not see Vaidehī (Sītā) on this beautiful mountain." Thereupon, afflicted with sorrow, Lakṣmaṇa spoke.
विचरन्दण्डकारण्यं भ्रातरं दीप्ततेजसं ।
प्राप्स्यसि त्वं महाप्राज्ञ मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम् ॥२१॥
21. vicarandaṇḍakāraṇyaṃ bhrātaraṃ dīptatejasaṃ ,
prāpsyasi tvaṃ mahāprājña maithilīṃ janakātmajām.
21. vicaran daṇḍakāraṇyam bhrātaram dīptatejasam
prāpsyasi tvam mahāprājña maithilīm janakātmajām
21. mahāprājña tvam dīptatejasam bhrātaram daṇḍakāraṇyam
vicaran janakātmajām maithilīm prāpsyasi
21. O greatly wise one, as you traverse the Daṇḍaka forest with your resplendent brother, you will find Maithilī, the daughter of Janaka.
यथा विष्णुर्महाबाहुर्बलिं बद्ध्वा महीमिमाम् ।
एवमुक्तस्तु वीरेण लक्ष्मणेन स राघवः ॥२२॥
22. yathā viṣṇurmahābāhurbaliṃ baddhvā mahīmimām ,
evamuktastu vīreṇa lakṣmaṇena sa rāghavaḥ.
22. yathā viṣṇuḥ mahābāhuḥ balim baddhvā mahīm imām
evam uktaḥ tu vīreṇa lakṣmaṇena saḥ rāghavaḥ
22. yathā mahābāhuḥ viṣṇuḥ balim baddhvā imām mahīm
saḥ rāghavaḥ tu vīreṇa lakṣmaṇena evam uktaḥ
22. Just as the mighty-armed Viṣṇu, having bound Bali, (recovered) this earth; thus addressed by the heroic Lakṣmaṇa, that Raghava...
उवाच दीनया वाचा दुःखाभिहतचेतनः ।
वनं सर्वं सुविचितं पद्मिन्यः फुल्लपङ्कजाः ॥२३॥
23. uvāca dīnayā vācā duḥkhābhihatacetanaḥ ,
vanaṃ sarvaṃ suvicitaṃ padminyaḥ phullapaṅkajāḥ.
23. uvāca dīnayā vācā duḥkhābhihatacetanaḥ vanam
sarvam suvicitam padminyaḥ phullapaṅkajāḥ
23. duḥkhābhihatacetanaḥ dīnayā vācā uvāca sarvam

23. His mind overwhelmed with sorrow, he spoke in a mournful voice: "The entire forest has been thoroughly searched; the lotus ponds are full of blooming lotuses."
गिरिश्चायं महाप्राज्ञ बहुकन्दरनिर्झरः ।
न हि पश्यामि वैदेहीं प्राणेभ्यो ऽपि गरीयसीम् ॥२४॥
24. giriścāyaṃ mahāprājña bahukandaranirjharaḥ ,
na hi paśyāmi vaidehīṃ prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasīm.
24. giriḥ ca ayam mahāprājña bahukandaranirjharaḥ
na hi paśyāmi vaidehīm prāṇebhyaḥ api garīyasīm
24. mahāprājña ayam giriḥ ca bahukandaranirjharaḥ
hi na paśyāmi prāṇebhyaḥ api garīyasīm vaidehīm
24. O greatly wise one, this mountain, too, with its many caves and waterfalls (has been searched). Yet, I do not see Vaidehī, who is dearer to me even than life itself.
एवं स विलपन् रामः सीताहरणकर्शितः ।
दीनः शोकसमाविष्टो मुहूर्तं विह्वलो ऽभवत् ॥२५॥
25. evaṃ sa vilapan rāmaḥ sītāharaṇakarśitaḥ ,
dīnaḥ śokasamāviṣṭo muhūrtaṃ vihvalo'bhavat.
25. evam saḥ vilapan rāmaḥ sītāharaṇakarśitaḥ
dīnaḥ śokasamāviṣṭaḥ muhūrtam vihvalaḥ abhavat
25. evam saḥ rāmaḥ sītāharaṇakarśitaḥ dīnaḥ
śokasamāviṣṭaḥ vilapan muhūrtam vihvalaḥ abhavat
25. In this manner, Rama, weakened by the abduction of Sita, distressed and overcome by sorrow, became bewildered for a moment, lamenting.
स विह्वलितसर्वाङ्गो गतबुद्धिर्विचेतनः ।
विषसादातुरो दीनो निःश्वस्याशीतमायतम् ॥२६॥
26. sa vihvalitasarvāṅgo gatabuddhirvicetanaḥ ,
viṣasādāturo dīno niḥśvasyāśītamāyatam.
26. saḥ vihvalitasarvāṅgaḥ gatabuddhiḥ vicetanaḥ
viṣasādāturaḥ dīnaḥ niḥśvasya aśītam āyatam
26. saḥ vihvalitasarvāṅgaḥ gatabuddhiḥ vicetanaḥ
viṣasādāturaḥ dīnaḥ aśītam āyatam niḥśvasya
26. With all his limbs trembling, deprived of his senses, unconscious, afflicted by despondency, and miserable, he sighed deeply and at length.
बहुशः स तु निःश्वस्य रामो राजीवलोचनः ।
हा प्रियेति विचुक्रोश बहुशो बाष्पगद्गदः ॥२७॥
27. bahuśaḥ sa tu niḥśvasya rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ ,
hā priyeti vicukrośa bahuśo bāṣpagadgadaḥ.
27. bahuśaḥ saḥ tu niḥśvasya rāmaḥ rājīvalocanaḥ
hā priye iti vicukrośa bahuśaḥ bāṣpagadgadaḥ
27. tu saḥ rājīvalocanaḥ rāmaḥ bahuśaḥ niḥśvasya
bāṣpagadgadaḥ bahuśaḥ hā priye iti vicukrośa
27. Indeed, having sighed repeatedly, Rama, whose eyes were like lotuses, cried out "Oh, beloved!" many times, his voice choked with tears.
तं सान्त्वयामास ततो लक्ष्मणः प्रियबान्धवः ।
बहुप्रकारं धर्मज्ञः प्रश्रितः प्रश्रिताञ्जलिः ॥२८॥
28. taṃ sāntvayāmāsa tato lakṣmaṇaḥ priyabāndhavaḥ ,
bahuprakāraṃ dharmajñaḥ praśritaḥ praśritāñjaliḥ.
28. tam sāntvayāmāsa tataḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ priyabāndhavaḥ
bahuprakāram dharmajnaḥ praśritaḥ praśritāñjaliḥ
28. tataḥ priyabāndhavaḥ dharmajnaḥ praśritaḥ
praśritāñjaliḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ tam bahuprakāram sāntvayāmāsa
28. Then Lakshmana, his dear kinsman, a knower of (natural) law (dharma), humble and with folded hands, consoled him in many ways.
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं लक्ष्मणौष्ठपुटच्युतम् ।
अपश्यंस्तां प्रियां सीतां प्राक्रोशत् स पुनः पुनः ॥२९॥
29. anādṛtya tu tadvākyaṃ lakṣmaṇauṣṭhapuṭacyutam ,
apaśyaṃstāṃ priyāṃ sītāṃ prākrośat sa punaḥ punaḥ.

29. Disregarding those words that had fallen from Lakṣmaṇa's lips, and unable to find his beloved Sītā, he cried out repeatedly.
