तच्छ्रुत्वा राजसिंहस्य वाक्यमद्भुतविस्तरम् ।
हृष्टरोमा महातेजा विश्वामित्रो ऽभ्यभाषत ॥१॥
1. tacchrutvā rājasiṃhasya vākyamadbhutavistaram ,
hṛṣṭaromā mahātejā viśvāmitro'bhyabhāṣata.

1. (mahātejāḥ hṛṣṭaromā) viśvāmitraḥ rājasiṃhasya (adbhutavistaram) tat vākyam śrutvā,
abhyabhāṣata
1. Having heard that speech from the lion among kings, which was of amazing scope, the great and splendid Viśvāmitra, with his hair standing on end (in thrill), then spoke.
सदृशं राजशार्दूल तवैतद्भुवि नान्यतः ।
महावंशप्रसूतस्य वसिष्ठव्यपदेशिनः ॥२॥
2. sadṛśaṃ rājaśārdūla tavaitadbhuvi nānyataḥ ,
mahāvaṃśaprasūtasya vasiṣṭhavyapadeśinaḥ.
2. sadṛśam rājaśārdūla tava etat bhuvi na anyataḥ
mahāvaṃśaprasūtasya vasiṣṭhavyapadeśinaḥ
2. rājaśārdūla,
(mahāvaṃśaprasūtasya vasiṣṭhavyapadeśinaḥ) tava etat sadṛśam (asti); bhuvi anyataḥ na (āgacchati)
2. O tiger among kings, this is indeed fitting for you, who are born of a noble lineage and are recognized as a follower of Vasiṣṭha; on earth, such a statement would not come from anyone else.
यत्तु मे हृद्गतं वाक्यं तस्य कार्यस्य निश्चयम् ।
कुरुष्व राजशार्दूल भव सत्यप्रतिश्रवः ॥३॥
3. yattu me hṛdgataṃ vākyaṃ tasya kāryasya niścayam ,
kuruṣva rājaśārdūla bhava satyapratiśravaḥ.
3. yat tu me hṛdgatam vākyam tasya kāryasya niścayam
kuruṣva rājaśārdūla bhava satyapratiśravaḥ
3. rājaśārdūla,
yat vākyam me hṛdgatam tu asti,
tasya kāryasya niścayam kuruṣva (ca) satyapratiśravaḥ bhava
3. O tiger among kings, regarding the matter that is in my heart, make a firm resolution for that task, and be true to your word.
अहं नियममातिष्ठ सिद्ध्यर्थं पुरुषर्षभ ।
तस्य विघ्नकरौ द्वौ तु राक्षसौ कामरूपिणौ ॥४॥
4. ahaṃ niyamamātiṣṭha siddhyarthaṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
tasya vighnakarau dvau tu rākṣasau kāmarūpiṇau.
4. aham niyamam ātiṣṭha siddhyartham puruṣarṣabha
tasya vighnakarau dvau tu rākṣasau kāmarūpiṇau
4. puruṣarṣabha aham siddhyartham niyamam ātiṣṭha
tu tasya vighnakarau dvau kāmarūpiṇau rākṣasau
4. O best among men, I am observing a vow for its accomplishment. However, two Rākṣasas, who can change their form at will, create obstacles for it.
व्रते मे बहुशश्चीर्णे समाप्त्यां राक्षसाविमौ ।
मारीचश्च सुबाहुश्च वीर्यवन्तौ सुशिक्षितौ ।
तौ मांसरुधिरौघेण वेदिं तामभ्यवर्षताम् ॥५॥
5. vrate me bahuśaścīrṇe samāptyāṃ rākṣasāvimau ,
mārīcaśca subāhuśca vīryavantau suśikṣitau ,
tau māṃsarudhiraugheṇa vediṃ tāmabhyavarṣatām.
5. vrate me bahuśaḥ cīrṇe samāptyām
rākṣasau imau marīcaḥ ca subāhuḥ ca
vīryavantau suśikṣitau tau
māṃsarudhiraugheṇa vedim tām abhyavarṣatām
5. me vrate bahuśaḥ cīrṇe samāptyām
imau rākṣasau marīcaḥ ca subāhuḥ ca
vīryavantau suśikṣitau tau tām
vedim māṃsarudhiraugheṇa abhyavarṣatām
5. When my vow was performed many times and was nearing its completion, these two Rākṣasas, Marīca and Subāhu, who are powerful and well-trained, showered that altar with a torrent of flesh and blood.
अवधूते तथा भूते तस्मिन्नियमनिश्चये ।
कृतश्रमो निरुत्साहस्तस्माद्देशादपाक्रमे ॥६॥
6. avadhūte tathā bhūte tasminniyamaniścaye ,
kṛtaśramo nirutsāhastasmāddeśādapākrame.
6. avadhūte tathā bhūte tasmin niyamanिश्चaye
kṛtaśramaḥ nirutsāhaḥ tasmāt deśāt apākrame
6. tasmin niyamanिश्चaye avadhūte tathā bhūte
kṛtaśramaḥ nirutsāhaḥ tasmāt deśāt apākrame
6. With that firm resolve of my vow thus disturbed and brought to such a state, I became exhausted and disheartened, and withdrew from that place.
न च मे क्रोधमुत्स्रष्टुं बुद्धिर्भवति पार्थिव ।
तथाभूता हि सा चर्या न शापस्तत्र मुच्यते ॥७॥
7. na ca me krodhamutsraṣṭuṃ buddhirbhavati pārthiva ,
tathābhūtā hi sā caryā na śāpastatra mucyate.
7. na ca me krodham utsraṣṭum buddhiḥ bhavati pārthiva
tathābhūtā hi sā caryā na śāpaḥ tatra mucyate
7. ca pārthiva na me krodham utsraṣṭum buddhiḥ bhavati
hi sā caryā tathābhūtā tatra śāpaḥ na mucyate
7. And, O king, I do not have the inclination to unleash my anger, for such was the nature of that observance that a curse cannot be uttered in that situation.
स्वपुत्रं राजशार्दूल रामं सत्यपराक्रमम् ।
काकपक्षधरं शूरं ज्येष्ठं मे दातुमर्हसि ॥८॥
8. svaputraṃ rājaśārdūla rāmaṃ satyaparākramam ,
kākapakṣadharaṃ śūraṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ me dātumarhasi.
8. sva-putram rājaśārdūla rāmam satya-parākramam
kāka-pakṣa-dharam śūram jyeṣṭham me dātum arhasi
8. rājaśārdūla (tvam) me sva-putram jyeṣṭham rāmam
satya-parākramam kāka-pakṣa-dharam śūram dātum arhasi
8. O tiger among kings, you should give me your eldest son Rama, who possesses true valor, is heroic, and still wears his hair in side-locks (as a youth).
शक्तो ह्येष मया गुप्तो दिव्येन स्वेन तेजसा ।
राक्षसा ये विकर्तारस्तेषामपि विनाशने ॥९॥
9. śakto hyeṣa mayā gupto divyena svena tejasā ,
rākṣasā ye vikartārasteṣāmapi vināśane.
9. śaktaḥ hi eṣaḥ mayā guptaḥ divyena svena tejasā
rākṣasāḥ ye vikartāraḥ teṣām api vināśane
9. hi eṣaḥ mayā divyena svena tejasā
guptaḥ (san) śaktaḥ (asti) ye
rākṣasāḥ vikartāraḥ (santi)
teṣām api vināśane (śaktaḥ asti)
9. Indeed, this one (Rama), protected by my own divine power, is capable even in the destruction of those demons who are tormentors.
श्रेयश्चास्मै प्रदास्यामि बहुरूपं न संशयः ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां येन ख्यातिं गमिष्यति ॥१०॥
10. śreyaścāsmai pradāsyāmi bahurūpaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ yena khyātiṃ gamiṣyati.
10. śreyaḥ ca asmai pradāsyāmi bahu-rūpam na saṃśayaḥ
trayāṇām api lokānām yena khyātim gamiṣyati
10. ca (aham) asmai bahu-rūpam śreyaḥ pradāsyāmi; saṃśayaḥ na
(asti); yena (saḥ) trayāṇām api lokānām khyātim gamiṣyati
10. And without doubt, I will grant him various blessings, through which he will attain renown throughout all three worlds.
न च तौ राममासाद्य शक्तौ स्थातुं कथं चन ।
न च तौ राघवादन्यो हन्तुमुत्सहते पुमान् ॥११॥
11. na ca tau rāmamāsādya śaktau sthātuṃ kathaṃ cana ,
na ca tau rāghavādanyo hantumutsahate pumān.
11. na ca tau rāmam āsādya śaktau sthātum katham cana
na ca tau rāghavāt anyaḥ hantum utsahate pumān
11. (te) ca rāmam āsādya tau (rākṣasau) katham cana sthātum
na śaktau; ca rāghavāt anyaḥ pumān tau hantum na utsahate
11. And having encountered Rama, those two (demons) will certainly not be able to stand (against him) at all. Nor does any other person (pumān) besides Raghava (Rama) dare to kill them.
वीर्योत्सिक्तौ हि तौ पापौ कालपाशवशं गतौ ।
रामस्य राजशार्दूल न पर्याप्तौ महात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. vīryotsiktau hi tau pāpau kālapāśavaśaṃ gatau ,
rāmasya rājaśārdūla na paryāptau mahātmanaḥ.
12. vīryotsiktau hi tau pāpau kālapāśavaśam gatau
rāmasya rājaśārdūla na paryāptau mahātmanaḥ
12. rājaśārdūla hi vīryotsiktau pāpau tau
kālapāśavaśam gatau mahātmanaḥ rāmasya na paryāptau
12. O tiger among kings, those two wicked ones, arrogant due to their might, have indeed fallen under the sway of the noose of time (kāla). They are certainly no match for the great-souled (mahātman) Rama.
न च पुत्रकृतं स्नेहं कर्तुमर्हसि पार्थिव ।
अहं ते प्रतिजानामि हतौ तौ विद्धि राक्षसौ ॥१३॥
13. na ca putrakṛtaṃ snehaṃ kartumarhasi pārthiva ,
ahaṃ te pratijānāmi hatau tau viddhi rākṣasau.
13. na ca putrakṛtam sneham kartum arhasi pārthiva
aham te pratijānāmi hatau tau viddhi rākṣasau
13. ca pārthiva tvam putrakṛtam sneham kartum na arhasi
aham te pratijānāmi tau rākṣasau hatau viddhi
13. And, O king, you should not give way to paternal affection (sneha). I assure you, consider those two Rākṣasas as already slain.
अहं वेद्मि महात्मानं रामं सत्यपराक्रमम् ।
वसिष्ठो ऽपि महातेजा ये चेमे तपसि स्थिताः ॥१४॥
14. ahaṃ vedmi mahātmānaṃ rāmaṃ satyaparākramam ,
vasiṣṭho'pi mahātejā ye ceme tapasi sthitāḥ.
14. aham vedmi mahātmānam rāmam satyaparākramam
vasiṣṭhaḥ api mahātejā ye ca ime tapasi sthitāḥ
14. aham mahātmānam satyaparākramam rāmam vedmi
vasiṣṭhaḥ api mahātejā ca ye ime tapasi sthitāḥ
14. I know the great-souled (mahātman) Rama, whose valor is unfailing. And Vasiṣṭha, who possesses great spiritual energy, as well as these others who are steadfast in their ascetic practice (tapas), also know him.
यदि ते धर्मलाभं च यशश्च परमं भुवि ।
स्थिरमिच्छसि राजेन्द्र रामं मे दातुमर्हसि ॥१५॥
15. yadi te dharmalābhaṃ ca yaśaśca paramaṃ bhuvi ,
sthiramicchasi rājendra rāmaṃ me dātumarhasi.
15. yadi te dharmalābham ca yaśaḥ ca paramam bhuvi
sthiram icchasi rājendra rāmam me dātum arhasi
15. rājendra yadi te bhuvi sthiram dharmalābham ca
paramam yaśaḥ ca icchasi me rāmam dātum arhasi
15. If, O best of kings, you desire lasting merit (dharma-lābha) and supreme fame on earth for yourself, then you should hand Rama over to me.
यद्यभ्यनुज्ञां काकुत्स्थ ददते तव मन्त्रिणः ।
वसिष्ठ प्रमुखाः सर्वे ततो रामं विसर्जय ॥१६॥
16. yadyabhyanujñāṃ kākutstha dadate tava mantriṇaḥ ,
vasiṣṭha pramukhāḥ sarve tato rāmaṃ visarjaya.
16. yadi abhyanujñām kākutstha dadate tava mantriṇaḥ
vasiṣṭha pramukhāḥ sarve tataḥ rāmam visarjaya
16. kākutstha yadi tava vasiṣṭha pramukhāḥ sarve
mantriṇaḥ abhyanujñām dadate tataḥ rāmam visarjaya
16. O Kakutstha (Rama), if all your ministers, led by Vasiṣṭha, grant their permission, then send Rama (with me).
अभिप्रेतमसंसक्तमात्मजं दातुमर्हसि ।
दशरात्रं हि यज्ञस्य रामं राजीवलोचनम् ॥१७॥
17. abhipretamasaṃsaktamātmajaṃ dātumarhasi ,
daśarātraṃ hi yajñasya rāmaṃ rājīvalocanam.
17. abhipretam asaṃsaktam ātmajam dātum arhasi
daśarātram hi yajñasya rāmam rājīvalocanam
17. hi tvam abhipretam asaṃsaktam ātmajam rājīvalocanam
rāmam yajñasya daśarātram dātum arhasi
17. Indeed, you ought to give your beloved, unattached (asaṃsaktam) son (ātmajam), the lotus-eyed Rāma, for the ten-night duration of the Vedic ritual (yajña).
नात्येति कालो यज्ञस्य यथायं मम राघव ।
तथा कुरुष्व भद्रं ते मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥१८॥
18. nātyeti kālo yajñasya yathāyaṃ mama rāghava ,
tathā kuruṣva bhadraṃ te mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
18. na atyeti kālaḥ yajñasya yathā ayam mama rāghava
tathā kuruṣva bhadram te mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
18. rāghava yathā ayam mama yajñasya kālaḥ na atyeti
tathā kuruṣva te bhadram ca śoke manaḥ mā kṛthāḥ
18. O Raghava, the time for this Vedic ritual (yajña) of mine is not to be exceeded. Therefore, act accordingly. May well-being be yours, and do not let your mind dwell in sorrow.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा धर्मात्मा धर्मार्थसहितं वचः ।
विरराम महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥१९॥
19. ityevamuktvā dharmātmā dharmārthasahitaṃ vacaḥ ,
virarāma mahātejā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ.
19. iti evam uktvā dharmātmā dharmārthasahitam
vacaḥ virarāma mahātejāḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
19. dharmātmā mahātejāḥ mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ iti
evam dharmārthasahitam vacaḥ uktvā virarāma
19. Having spoken thus, the virtuous one (dharmātmā), the great sage (mahāmuniḥ) Viśvāmitra, full of great splendor, ceased (speaking) these words which were aligned with (the principles of) intrinsic nature (dharma) and purpose.
इति हृदयमनोविदारणं मुनिवचनं तदतीव शुश्रुवान् ।
नरपतिरगमद्भयं महद्व्यथितमनाः प्रचचाल चासनात् ॥२०॥
20. iti hṛdayamanovidāraṇaṃ munivacanaṃ tadatīva śuśruvān ,
narapatiragamadbhayaṃ mahadvyathitamanāḥ pracacāla cāsanāt.
20. iti hṛdayamanovidāraṇam munivacanam tat atīva śuśruvān
narapatiḥ agamat bhayam mahat vyathitamanāḥ pracakāla ca āsanāt
20. iti atīva hṛdayamanovidāraṇam tat munivacanam śuśruvān,
vyathitamanāḥ narapatiḥ mahat bhayam agamat ca āsanāt pracakāla
20. Thus, having heard those extremely heart and mind-rending words of the sage, the king, distressed in mind, became overwhelmed with great fear and trembled from his seat.
