विशालान् कोसलान् रम्यान्यात्वा लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः ।
आससाद महाबाहुः शृङ्गवेरपुरं प्रति ॥१॥

1. Having traversed the vast and delightful Kośala lands, he, the elder brother of Lakshmana and the mighty-armed one, reached Śṛṅgaverapura.
तत्र त्रिपथगां दिव्यां शिवतोयामशैवलाम् ।
ददर्श राघवो गङ्गां पुण्यामृषिनिसेविताम् ॥२॥
2. tatra tripathagāṃ divyāṃ śivatoyāmaśaivalām ,
dadarśa rāghavo gaṅgāṃ puṇyāmṛṣinisevitām.

2. There, Rāghava (Rāma) saw the divine Gaṅgā, who flows in three paths, whose waters are auspicious, free from moss, sacred, and frequented by sages.
हंससारससंघुष्टां चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम् ।
शिंशुमरैश्च नक्रैश्च भुजंगैश्च निषेविताम् ॥३॥
3. haṃsasārasasaṃghuṣṭāṃ cakravākopakūjitām ,
śiṃśumaraiśca nakraiśca bhujaṃgaiśca niṣevitām.

3. (He saw the Gaṅgā) resounded by swans and cranes, echoed by ruddy geese (cakravāka birds), and frequented by porpoises, crocodiles, and snakes.
तामूर्मिकलिलावर्तामन्ववेक्ष्य महारथः ।
सुमन्त्रमब्रवीत् सूतमिहैवाद्य वसामहे ॥४॥
4. tāmūrmikalilāvartāmanvavekṣya mahārathaḥ ,
sumantramabravīt sūtamihaivādya vasāmahe.
4. tām ūrmikalilāvartām anvavekṣya mahārathaḥ
sumantram abravīt sūtam iha eva adya vasāmahe

4. Having observed her (the Gaṅgā), whose waters were agitated by waves and eddies, the great warrior (Rāma) said to Sumantra, his charioteer: 'We shall stay right here today.'
अविदूरादयं नद्या बहुपुष्पप्रवालवान् ।
सुमहानिङ्गुदीवृक्षो वसामो ऽत्रैव सारथे ॥५॥
5. avidūrādayaṃ nadyā bahupuṣpapravālavān ,
sumahāniṅgudīvṛkṣo vasāmo'traiva sārathe.
5. avidūrāt ayam nadyāḥ bahupuṣpapravālavān
sumahān iṅgudīvṛkṣaḥ vasāmaḥ atra eva sārathe
5. sārathe! nadyāḥ avidūrāt ayam bahupuṣpapravālavān sumahān iṅgudīvṛkṣaḥ (asti).

5. O charioteer, not far from this river is this very large Iṅgudī tree, abundant with many flowers and new shoots. We shall stay right here.
लक्षणश्च सुमन्त्रश्च बाढमित्येव राघवम् ।
उक्त्वा तमिङ्गुदीवृक्षं तदोपययतुर्हयैः ॥६॥
6. lakṣaṇaśca sumantraśca bāḍhamityeva rāghavam ,
uktvā tamiṅgudīvṛkṣaṃ tadopayayaturhayaiḥ.
6. lakṣmaṇaḥ ca sumantraḥ ca bāḍham iti eva rāghavam
uktvā tam iṅgudīvṛkṣam tadā upayayatuḥ hayaiḥ
6. lakṣmaṇaḥ ca sumantraḥ ca rāghavam bāḍham iti

6. Lakṣmaṇa and Sumantra, having thus said "So be it!" to Rāma, then approached that Ingudi tree with their horses.
रामो ऽभियाय तं रम्यं वृक्षमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः ।
रथादवातरत्तस्मात् सभार्यः सहलक्ष्मणः ॥७॥
7. rāmo'bhiyāya taṃ ramyaṃ vṛkṣamikṣvākunandanaḥ ,
rathādavātarattasmāt sabhāryaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.
7. rāmaḥ abhiyāya tam ramyam vṛkṣam ikṣvākunandanaḥ
rathāt avātarat tasmāt sabhāryaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ

tasmāt rathāt sabhāryaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ avātarat
7. Rāma, the delight of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, having approached that beautiful tree, descended from the chariot with his wife and Lakṣmaṇa.
सुमन्त्रो ऽप्यवतीर्यैव मोचयित्वा हयोत्तमान् ।
वृक्षमूलगतं राममुपतस्थे कृताञ्जलिः ॥८॥
8. sumantro'pyavatīryaiva mocayitvā hayottamān ,
vṛkṣamūlagataṃ rāmamupatasthe kṛtāñjaliḥ.
8. sumantraḥ api avatīrya eva mocayitvā hayottamān
vṛkṣamūlagatam rāmam upatasthe kṛtāñjaliḥ

8. Sumantra also, immediately after descending and unharnessing the excellent horses, stood before Rāma, who was at the foot of the tree, with folded hands.
तत्र राजा गुहो नाम रामस्यात्मसमः सखा ।
निषादजात्यो बलवान् स्थपतिश्चेति विश्रुतः ॥९॥
9. tatra rājā guho nāma rāmasyātmasamaḥ sakhā ,
niṣādajātyo balavān sthapatiśceti viśrutaḥ.
9. tatra rājā guhaḥ nāma rāmasya ātmasamaḥ sakhā
niṣādajātyaḥ balavān sthapatiḥ ca iti viśrutaḥ
9. tatra guhaḥ nāma rājā rāmasya ātmasamaḥ sakhā

9. There, a king named Guha, a friend of Rāma who was like his own self (ātman), was well-known. He belonged to the Niṣāda tribe, was powerful, and was a chieftain.
स श्रुत्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रं रामं विषयमागतम् ।
वृद्धैः परिवृतो ऽमात्यैर्ज्ञातिभिश्चाप्युपागतः ॥१०॥
10. sa śrutvā puruṣavyāghraṃ rāmaṃ viṣayamāgatam ,
vṛddhaiḥ parivṛto'mātyairjñātibhiścāpyupāgataḥ.
10. saḥ śrutvā puruṣavyāghram rāmam viṣayam āgatam
vṛddhaiḥ parivṛtaḥ amātyaiḥ jñātibhiḥ ca api upāgataḥ
10. saḥ puruṣavyāghram rāmam viṣayam āgatam śrutvā
vṛddhaiḥ amātyaiḥ jñātibhiḥ ca api parivṛtaḥ upāgataḥ
10. Having heard that Rama, the tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), had arrived in his territory, he (Guha), surrounded by elderly ministers and also by relatives, approached him.
ततो निषादाधिपतिं दृष्ट्वा दूरादवस्थितम् ।
सह सौमित्रिणा रामः समागच्छद्गुहेन सः ॥११॥
11. tato niṣādādhipatiṃ dṛṣṭvā dūrādavasthitam ,
saha saumitriṇā rāmaḥ samāgacchadguhena saḥ.
11. tataḥ niṣādādhipatim dṛṣṭvā dūrāt avasthitam
saha saumitriṇā rāmaḥ samāgacchad guhena saḥ
11. tataḥ rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha dūrāt avasthitam
niṣādādhipatim dṛṣṭvā saḥ guhena samāgacchad
11. Then, having seen the chief of the Niṣādas (niṣādādhipati), Guha, standing at a distance, Rama, along with Lakshmana (saumitri), approached him.
तमार्तः संपरिष्वज्य गुहो राघवमब्रवीत् ।
यथायोध्या तथेदं ते राम किं करवाणि ते ॥१२॥
12. tamārtaḥ saṃpariṣvajya guho rāghavamabravīt ,
yathāyodhyā tathedaṃ te rāma kiṃ karavāṇi te.
12. tam ārtaḥ saṃpariṣvajya guhaḥ rāghavam abravīt
yathā ayodhyā tathā idam te rāma kim karavāṇi te
12. ārtaḥ guhaḥ tam rāghavam saṃpariṣvajya abravīt.
rāma yathā ayodhyā tathā idam te.
te kim karavāṇi?
12. Distressed, Guha embraced Raghava (Rama) and said to him: "O Rama, this place is yours, just like Ayodhya. What may I do for you?"
ततो गुणवदन्नाद्यमुपादाय पृथग्विधम् ।
अर्घ्यं चोपानयत् क्षिप्रं वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥१३॥
13. tato guṇavadannādyamupādāya pṛthagvidham ,
arghyaṃ copānayat kṣipraṃ vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha.
13. tataḥ guṇavadannādyam upādāya pṛthagvidham arghyam
ca upānayat kṣipram vākyam ca idam uvāca ha
13. tataḥ guṇavadannādyam pṛthagvidham upādāya arghyam ca upānayat.
kṣipram idam vākyam ca ha uvāca.
13. Then, having gathered various kinds of excellent food and provisions, he quickly offered water (arghya) for respectful reception and spoke these words.
स्वागतं ते महाबाहो तवेयमखिला मही ।
वयं प्रेष्या भवान्भर्ता साधु राज्यं प्रशाधि नः ॥१४॥
14. svāgataṃ te mahābāho taveyamakhilā mahī ,
vayaṃ preṣyā bhavānbhartā sādhu rājyaṃ praśādhi naḥ.
14. svāgatam te mahābāho tava iyam akhilā mahī vayam
preṣyāḥ bhavān bhartā sādhu rājyam praśādhi naḥ
14. mahābāho te svāgatam iyam akhilā mahī tava vayam
preṣyāḥ bhavān bhartā naḥ rājyam sādhu praśādhi
14. Welcome to you, O mighty-armed one. This entire earth belongs to you. We are your servants, and you are our master; therefore, please rule our kingdom justly.
भक्ष्यं भोज्यं च पेयं च लेह्यं चेदमुपस्थितम् ।
शयनानि च मुख्यानि वाजिनां खादनं च ते ॥१५॥
15. bhakṣyaṃ bhojyaṃ ca peyaṃ ca lehyaṃ cedamupasthitam ,
śayanāni ca mukhyāni vājināṃ khādanaṃ ca te.
15. bhakṣyam bhojyam ca peyam ca lehyam ca idam upasthitam
śayanāni ca mukhyāni vājinām khādanam ca te
15. idam bhakṣyam ca bhojyam ca peyam ca lehyam ca
upasthitam te mukhyāni śayanāni ca vājinām khādanam ca
15. Solid food, soft food, drinks, and licks - all these are ready. And excellent beds, along with fodder for your horses, are also prepared for you.
गुहमेव ब्रुवाणं तं राघवः प्रत्युवाच ह ।
अर्चिताश्चैव हृष्टाश्च भवता सर्वथा वयम् ॥१६॥
16. guhameva bruvāṇaṃ taṃ rāghavaḥ pratyuvāca ha ,
arcitāścaiva hṛṣṭāśca bhavatā sarvathā vayam.
16. guhyam eva bruvāṇam tam rāghavaḥ pratyuvāca ha
arcitāḥ ca eva hṛṣṭāḥ ca bhavatā sarvathā vayam
16. rāghavaḥ eva bruvāṇam tam guham ha pratyuvāca
vayam bhavatā sarvathā arcitāḥ ca eva hṛṣṭāḥ ca
16. To Guha, who was speaking thus, Rāghava (Rama) indeed replied: "We have been completely honored and delighted by you."
पद्भ्यामभिगमाच्चैव स्नेहसंदर्शनेन च ।
भुजाभ्यां साधुवृत्ताभ्यां पीडयन् वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
17. padbhyāmabhigamāccaiva snehasaṃdarśanena ca ,
bhujābhyāṃ sādhuvṛttābhyāṃ pīḍayan vākyamabravīt.
17. padbhyām abhigamāt ca eva snehasandarśanena ca
bhujābhyām sādhuvṛttābhyām pīḍayan vākyam abravīt

17. Approaching him on foot and demonstrating affection, he (Rama) embraced him with his strong, well-formed arms and then spoke these words.
दिष्ट्या त्वां गुह पश्यामि अरोगं सह बान्धवैः ।
अपि ते कूशलं राष्ट्रे मित्रेषु च धनेषु च ॥१८॥
18. diṣṭyā tvāṃ guha paśyāmi arogaṃ saha bāndhavaiḥ ,
api te kūśalaṃ rāṣṭre mitreṣu ca dhaneṣu ca.
18. diṣṭyā tvām guha paśyāmi arogaṃ saha bāndhavaiḥ
api te kūśalaṃ rāṣṭre mitreṣu ca dhaneṣu ca
18. guha diṣṭyā tvām bāndhavaiḥ saha arogaṃ paśyāmi
api te kūśalaṃ rāṣṭre mitreṣu ca dhaneṣu ca
18. O Guha, fortunately, I see you healthy along with your relatives. Is all well with your kingdom, your friends, and your wealth?
यत्त्विदं भवता किं चित् प्रीत्या समुपकल्पितम् ।
सर्वं तदनुजानामि न हि वर्ते प्रतिग्रहे ॥१९॥
19. yattvidaṃ bhavatā kiṃ cit prītyā samupakalpitam ,
sarvaṃ tadanujānāmi na hi varte pratigrahe.
19. yat tu idam bhavatā kim cit prītyā samupakalpitam
sarvam tat anujānāmi na hi varte pratigrahe
19. bhavatā prītyā yat kim cit idam samupakalpitam
tat sarvam anujānāmi hi na pratigrahe varte
19. Whatever little you have affectionately offered, I approve of all of it. Indeed, I do not engage in receiving gifts.
कुशचीराजिनधरं फलमूलाशनं च माम् ।
विद्धि प्रणिहितं धर्मे तापसं वनगोचरम् ॥२०॥
20. kuśacīrājinadharaṃ phalamūlāśanaṃ ca mām ,
viddhi praṇihitaṃ dharme tāpasaṃ vanagocaram.
20. kuśacīrājina-dharaṃ phalamūlāśanaṃ ca mām
viddhi praṇihitaṃ dharme tāpasaṃ vanagocaram
20. mām kuśacīrājina-dharaṃ phalamūlāśanaṃ ca
dharme praṇihitaṃ vanagocaram tāpasaṃ viddhi
20. Know me to be an ascetic dwelling in the forest, devoted to natural law (dharma), wearing kusha grass, bark garments, and deerskin, and subsisting on fruits and roots.
अश्वानां खादनेनाहमर्थी नान्येन केन चित् ।
एतावतात्रभवता भविष्यामि सुपूजितः ॥२१॥
21. aśvānāṃ khādanenāhamarthī nānyena kena cit ,
etāvatātrabhavatā bhaviṣyāmi supūjitaḥ.
21. aśvānām khādanena aham arthī na anyena kena
cit etāvatā atrabhavatā bhaviṣyāmi supūjitaḥ
21. aham aśvānām khādanena arthī na anyena kena
cit etāvatā atrabhavatā supūjitaḥ bhaviṣyāmi
21. I only desire food for the horses, not anything else whatsoever. By this much, I shall feel greatly honored by your honor.
एते हि दयिता राज्ञः पितुर्दशरथस्य मे ।
एतैः सुविहितैरश्वैर्भविष्याम्यहमर्चितः ॥२२॥
22. ete hi dayitā rājñaḥ piturdaśarathasya me ,
etaiḥ suvihitairaśvairbhaviṣyāmyahamarcitaḥ.
22. ete hi dayitā rājñaḥ pituḥ daśarathasya me
etaiḥ suvihitaiḥ aśvaiḥ bhaviṣyāmi aham arcitaḥ
22. hi me pituḥ rājñaḥ daśarathasya ete (aśvāḥ) dayitāḥ
(santi) aham etaiḥ suvihitaiḥ aśvaiḥ arcitaḥ bhaviṣyāmi
22. Indeed, these horses were dear to my father, King Dasharatha. I shall be honored (by him) through (my care of) these well-attended horses.
अश्वानां प्रतिपानं च खादनं चैव सो ऽन्वशात् ।
गुहस्तत्रैव पुरुषांस्त्वरितं दीयतामिति ॥२३॥
23. aśvānāṃ pratipānaṃ ca khādanaṃ caiva so'nvaśāt ,
guhastatraiva puruṣāṃstvaritaṃ dīyatāmiti.
23. aśvānāṃ pratipānaṃ ca khādanaṃ ca eva saḥ anvaśāt
guhaḥ tatra eva puruṣān tvaritaṃ dīyatām iti
23. saḥ (guhaḥ) aśvānāṃ pratipānaṃ ca khādanaṃ ca eva anvaśāt
(saḥ) guhaḥ tatra eva puruṣān (āha) "tvaritaṃ dīyatām" iti
23. He (Guha) then gave orders regarding the horses' drink and fodder. Guha told his men there, 'Let it be given quickly!'
ततश्चीरोत्तरासङ्गः संध्यामन्वास्य पश्चिमाम् ।
जलमेवाददे भोज्यं लक्ष्मणेनाहृतं स्वयम् ॥२४॥
24. tataścīrottarāsaṅgaḥ saṃdhyāmanvāsya paścimām ,
jalamevādade bhojyaṃ lakṣmaṇenāhṛtaṃ svayam.
24. tataḥ cīra uttarāsaṅgaḥ sandhyām anvāsya paścimām
jalam eva ādade bhojyam lakṣmaṇena āhṛtam svayam
24. tataḥ cīra-uttarāsaṅgaḥ (rāmaḥ) paścimām sandhyām anvāsya
(saḥ) lakṣmaṇena svayam āhṛtam jalam eva bhojyam ādade
24. Then, wearing an upper garment of bark, having performed the western (evening) twilight prayer, he took only water as food, which Lakshmana himself had brought.
तस्य भूमौ शयानस्य पादौ प्रक्षाल्य लक्ष्मणः ।
सभार्यस्य ततो ऽभ्येत्य तस्थौ वृक्षमुपाश्रितः ॥२५॥
25. tasya bhūmau śayānasya pādau prakṣālya lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
sabhāryasya tato'bhyetya tasthau vṛkṣamupāśritaḥ.
25. tasya bhūmau śayānasya pādau prakṣālya lakṣmaṇaḥ
sabhāryasya tataḥ abhyetya tasthau vṛkṣam upāśritaḥ

25. Lakshmana, having washed the feet of Rama, who was lying on the ground along with his wife (Sita), then approached and stood leaning against a tree.
गुहो ऽपि सह सूतेन सौमित्रिमनुभाषयन् ।
अन्वजाग्रत्ततो राममप्रमत्तो धनुर्धरः ॥२६॥
26. guho'pi saha sūtena saumitrimanubhāṣayan ,
anvajāgrattato rāmamapramatto dhanurdharaḥ.
26. guhaḥ api saha sūtena saumitrim anubhāṣayan
anvājāgrat tataḥ rāmam apramattaḥ dhanurdharaḥ
26. guhaḥ apramattaḥ dhanurdharaḥ api saumitrim
saha sūtena anubhāṣayan tataḥ rāmam anvājāgrat
26. Guha, the vigilant bow-wielder, also stayed awake, conversing with Lakṣmaṇa (Saumitri) and his chief minister, thereby guarding Rama.
तथा शयानस्य ततो ऽस्य धीमतो यशस्विनो दाशरथेर्महात्मनः ।
अदृष्टदुःखस्य सुखोचितस्य सा तदा व्यतीयाय चिरेण शर्वरी ॥२७॥
27. tathā śayānasya tato'sya dhīmato yaśasvino dāśarathermahātmanaḥ ,
adṛṣṭaduḥkhasya sukhocitasya sā tadā vyatīyāya cireṇa śarvarī.
27. tathā śayānasya tataḥ asya dhīmataḥ
yaśasvinaḥ dāśaratheḥ mahātmanaḥ
adṛṣṭaduḥkhasya sukhočitasya
sā tadā vyatīyāya cireṇa śarvarī

27. Thus, for that wise, renowned, great-souled (mahātman) son of Daśaratha, who was sleeping in such a manner, a person unacquainted with sorrow and accustomed to comfort, that night passed with difficulty.
