1. Having given instructions to eight exceedingly powerful and fierce demons, Ravana, due to his intellectual infirmity, considered himself to have achieved his goal.
स चिन्तयानो वैदेहीं कामबाणसमर्पितः ।
प्रविवेश गृहं रम्यं सीतां द्रष्टुमभित्वरन् ॥२॥
2. sa cintayāno vaidehīṃ kāmabāṇasamarpitaḥ ,
praviveśa gṛhaṃ ramyaṃ sītāṃ draṣṭumabhitvaran.

2. He, preoccupied with thoughts of Sita (Vaidehī) and afflicted by the arrows of the god of love (Kāma), entered a beautiful house, eager to see Sita.
स प्रविश्य तु तद्वेश्म रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
अपश्यद् राक्षसीमध्ये सीतां शोकपरायणम् ॥३॥
3. sa praviśya tu tadveśma rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
apaśyad rākṣasīmadhye sītāṃ śokaparāyaṇam.

3. Having entered that dwelling, Ravana, the lord of the demons, then saw Sita amidst the demonesses, utterly devoted to sorrow.
अश्रुपूर्णमुखीं दीनां शोकभारावपीडिताम् ।
वायुवेगैरिवाक्रान्तां मज्जन्तीं नावमर्णवे ॥४॥
4. aśrupūrṇamukhīṃ dīnāṃ śokabhārāvapīḍitām ,
vāyuvegairivākrāntāṃ majjantīṃ nāvamarṇave.

4. With her face full of tears, utterly miserable and oppressed by the heavy burden of sorrow, she was like a boat sinking in the ocean, overwhelmed by the strong gales.
मृगयूथपरिभ्रष्टां मृगीं श्वभिरिवावृताम् ।
अधोमुखमुखीं दीनामभ्येत्य च निशाचरः ॥५॥
5. mṛgayūthaparibhraṣṭāṃ mṛgīṃ śvabhirivāvṛtām ,
adhomukhamukhīṃ dīnāmabhyetya ca niśācaraḥ.

5. Like a female deer (mṛgī) separated from her herd and surrounded by dogs, the night-stalker (niśācara) approached that miserable one, whose face was downcast.
तां तु शोकवशां दीनामवशां राक्षसाधिपः ।
स बलाद्दर्शयामास गृहं देवगृहोपमम् ॥६॥
6. tāṃ tu śokavaśāṃ dīnāmavaśāṃ rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
sa balāddarśayāmāsa gṛhaṃ devagṛhopamam.
6. tām tu śokavaśām dīnām avaśām rākṣasādhipaḥ
saḥ balāt darśayāmāsa gṛham devagṛhopamam
6. tu saḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ tām śokavaśām dīnām
avaśām balāt devagṛhopamam gṛham darśayāmāsa
6. But the lord of demons (rākṣasādhipaḥ), Rāvaṇa, forcefully showed that miserable, helpless woman, overcome by sorrow, his palace, which was like a divine abode.
हर्म्यप्रासादसंबधं स्त्रीसहस्रनिषेवितम् ।
नानापक्षिगणैर्जुष्टं नानारत्नसमन्वितम् ॥७॥
7. harmyaprāsādasaṃbadhaṃ strīsahasraniṣevitam ,
nānāpakṣigaṇairjuṣṭaṃ nānāratnasamanvitam.

7. It was connected with various mansions and palaces, frequented by thousands of women, filled with diverse flocks of birds, and adorned with many kinds of jewels.
काञ्चनैस्तापनीयैश्च स्फाटिकै राजतैस्तथा ।
वज्रवैदूर्यचित्रैश्च स्तम्भैर्दृष्टिमनोहरैः ॥८॥
8. kāñcanaistāpanīyaiśca sphāṭikai rājataistathā ,
vajravaidūryacitraiśca stambhairdṛṣṭimanoharaiḥ.
8. kāñcanaiḥ tāpanīyaiḥ ca sphāṭikaiḥ rājataiḥ tathā
vajravaidūryacitraiḥ ca stambhaiḥ dṛṣṭimanoharaiḥ

8. The columns, charming to behold, were made of gold, refined gold, crystal, and silver, and were variegated with diamonds and lapis lazuli.
दिव्यदुन्दुभिनिर्ह्रादं तप्तकाञ्चनतोरणम् ।
सोपानं काञ्चनं चित्रमारुरोह तया सह ॥९॥
9. divyadundubhinirhrādaṃ taptakāñcanatoraṇam ,
sopānaṃ kāñcanaṃ citramāruroha tayā saha.

9. He ascended with her the golden and wonderfully ornate staircase, which echoed with the sound of divine drums and had archways made of refined gold.
दान्तका राजताश्चैव गवाक्षाः प्रियदर्शनाः ।
हेमजालावृताश्चासंस्तत्र प्रासादपङ्क्तयः ॥१०॥
10. dāntakā rājatāścaiva gavākṣāḥ priyadarśanāḥ ,
hemajālāvṛtāścāsaṃstatra prāsādapaṅktayaḥ.
10. dāntakāḥ rājatāḥ ca eva gavākṣāḥ priyadarśanāḥ
hemajālāvṛtāḥ ca āsan tatra prāsādapaṅktayaḥ

10. There, the rows of palaces were adorned with golden lattices, and they featured charming windows made of ivory and silver.
सुधामणिविचित्राणि भूमिभागानि सर्वशः ।
दशग्रीवः स्वभवने प्रादर्शयत मैथिलीम् ॥११॥
11. sudhāmaṇivicitrāṇi bhūmibhāgāni sarvaśaḥ ,
daśagrīvaḥ svabhavane prādarśayata maithilīm.

11. Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) showed Maithilī (Sītā) all the sections of his palace that were wonderfully variegated with precious gems and polished stucco.
दीर्घिकाः पुष्करिण्यश्च नानापुष्पसमावृताः ।
रावणो दर्शयामास सीतां शोकपरायणाम् ॥१२॥
12. dīrghikāḥ puṣkariṇyaśca nānāpuṣpasamāvṛtāḥ ,
rāvaṇo darśayāmāsa sītāṃ śokaparāyaṇām.
12. dīrghikāḥ puṣkariṇyaḥ ca nānāpuṣpasamāvṛtāḥ

12. Ravana showed the grief-stricken Sita long ponds and lotus ponds, which were covered with various flowers.
दर्शयित्वा तु वैदेहीं कृत्स्नं तद्भवनोत्तमम् ।
उवाच वाक्यं पापात्मा रावणो जनकात्मजाम् ॥१३॥
13. darśayitvā tu vaidehīṃ kṛtsnaṃ tadbhavanottamam ,
uvāca vākyaṃ pāpātmā rāvaṇo janakātmajām.
13. darśayitvā tu vaidehīm kṛtsnam tat bhavanottamam
uvāca vākyam pāpātmā rāvaṇaḥ janakātmajām

13. Having shown Vaidehi (Sita) that entire excellent abode, the evil-minded Ravana spoke words to Janaka's daughter.
दशराक्षसकोट्यश्च द्वाविंशतिरथापराः ।
वर्जयित्वा जरा वृद्धान्बालांश्च रजनीचरान् ॥१४॥
14. daśarākṣasakoṭyaśca dvāviṃśatirathāparāḥ ,
varjayitvā jarā vṛddhānbālāṃśca rajanīcarān.
14. daśarākṣasakoṭyaḥ ca dvāviṃśatiḥ atha aparāḥ
varjayitvā jarā vṛddhān bālān ca rajacārān
14. jarā vṛddhān bālān ca rajacārān varjayitvā

14. There are ten crores of rakshasas and an additional twenty-two (crores), excluding the very old and children among these night-prowling beings.
तेषां प्रभुरहं सीते सर्वेषां भीमकर्मणाम् ।
सहस्रमेकमेकस्य मम कार्यपुरःसरम् ॥१५॥
15. teṣāṃ prabhurahaṃ sīte sarveṣāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām ,
sahasramekamekasya mama kāryapuraḥsaram.
15. teṣām prabhuḥ aham sīte sarveṣām bhīmakarmaṇām
sahasram ekam ekasya mama kāryapuraḥsaram
15. sīte aham bhīmakarmaṇām teṣām sarveṣām prabhuḥ

15. Sita, I am the lord of all those (rakshasas) who perform terrifying deeds. For each of my undertakings, a thousand (rakshasas) serve as attendants.
यदिदं राज्यतन्त्रं मे त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
जीवितं च विशालाक्षि त्वं मे प्राणैर्गरीयसी ॥१६॥
16. yadidaṃ rājyatantraṃ me tvayi sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ,
jīvitaṃ ca viśālākṣi tvaṃ me prāṇairgarīyasī.
16. yat idam rājyatantram me tvayi sarvam pratiṣṭhitam
jīvitam ca viśālākṣi tvam me prāṇaiḥ garīyasī
16. viśālākṣi yat idam me rājyatantram sarvam
tvayi pratiṣṭhitam ca tvam me prāṇaiḥ garīyasī
16. O wide-eyed one, whatever administration of my kingdom is established in you, all of it is. And you are dearer to me than my very life.
बहूनां स्त्रीसहस्राणां मम यो ऽसौ परिग्रहः ।
तासां त्वमीश्वरी सीते मम भार्या भव प्रिये ॥१७॥
17. bahūnāṃ strīsahasrāṇāṃ mama yo'sau parigrahaḥ ,
tāsāṃ tvamīśvarī sīte mama bhāryā bhava priye.
17. bahūnām strī-sahasrāṇām mama yaḥ asau parigrahaḥ
tāsām tvam īśvarī sīte mama bhāryā bhava priye
17. sīte priye yaḥ asau mama bahūnām strī-sahasrāṇām
parigrahaḥ tāsām tvam īśvarī mama bhāryā bhava
17. O beloved Sītā, you shall be the mistress of those many thousands of women who constitute my household, and you shall become my wife.
साधु किं ते ऽन्यया बुद्ध्या रोचयस्व वचो मम ।
भजस्व माभितप्तस्य प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१८॥
18. sādhu kiṃ te'nyayā buddhyā rocayasva vaco mama ,
bhajasva mābhitaptasya prasādaṃ kartumarhasi.
18. sādhu kim te anyayā buddhyā rocayasva vacaḥ mama
bhajasva mā abhitaptasya prasādam kartum arhasi
18. kim anyayā buddhyā sādhu te mama vacaḥ rocayasva
abhitaptasya mām bhajasva prasādam kartum arhasi
18. What good is there in having any other idea? Indeed, please approve my words. Take refuge in me, who am greatly distressed; you should certainly show me your grace (prasāda).
परिक्षिप्ता समुद्रेण लङ्केयं शतयोजना ।
नेयं धर्षयितुं शक्या सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥१९॥
19. parikṣiptā samudreṇa laṅkeyaṃ śatayojanā ,
neyaṃ dharṣayituṃ śakyā sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ.
19. parikṣiptā samudreṇa laṅkā iyam śata-yojanā na
iyam dharṣayitum śakyā sa-indraiḥ api sura-asuraiḥ
19. iyam laṅkā samudreṇa śata-yojanā parikṣiptā iyam
sa-indraiḥ api sura-asuraiḥ dharṣayitum na śakyā
19. This Lankā, extending a hundred yojanas, is completely surrounded by the ocean. It cannot be assailed even by the gods and demons, along with Indra.
न देवेषु न यक्षेषु न गन्धर्वेषु नर्षिषु ।
अहं पश्यामि लोकेषु यो मे वीर्यसमो भवेत् ॥२०॥
20. na deveṣu na yakṣeṣu na gandharveṣu narṣiṣu ,
ahaṃ paśyāmi lokeṣu yo me vīryasamo bhavet.
20. na deveṣu na yakṣeṣu na gandharveṣu na ṛṣiṣu
aham paśyāmi lokeṣu yaḥ me vīryasamaḥ bhavet
20. aham lokeṣu deveṣu na yakṣeṣu na gandharveṣu
na ṛṣiṣu na yaḥ me vīryasamaḥ bhavet paśyāmi
20. I do not see anyone in the worlds – among gods, Yakshas, Gandharvas, or sages – who could be equal to my valor.
राज्यभ्रष्टेन दीनेन तापसेन गतायुषा ।
किं करिष्यसि रामेण मानुषेणाल्पतेजसा ॥२१॥
21. rājyabhraṣṭena dīnena tāpasena gatāyuṣā ,
kiṃ kariṣyasi rāmeṇa mānuṣeṇālpatejasā.
21. rājyabhraṣṭena dīnena tāpasena gatāyuṣā
kim kariṣyasi rāmeṇa mānuṣeṇa alpatejasā
21. dīnena rājyabhraṣṭena gatāyuṣā tāpasena
alpatejasā mānuṣeṇa rāmeṇa kim kariṣyasi
21. What will you do with Rama, a human of little power (alpatējasā), who is deprived of his kingdom, miserable, and whose prime of life is past, living as an ascetic?
भजस्व सीते मामेव भर्ताहं सदृशस्तव ।
यौवनं ह्यध्रुवं भीरु रमस्वेह मया सह ॥२२॥
22. bhajasva sīte māmeva bhartāhaṃ sadṛśastava ,
yauvanaṃ hyadhruvaṃ bhīru ramasveha mayā saha.
22. bhajasva sīte mām eva bhartā aham sadṛśaḥ tava
yauvanam hi adhruvam bhīru ramasva iha mayā saha
22. sīte! mām eva bhajasva.
aham tava sadṛśaḥ bhartā.
bhīru! yauvanam hi adhruvam.
mayā saha iha ramasva.
22. O Sita, just accept me; I am a worthy husband for you. O fearful one, youth is indeed transient, so enjoy yourself here with me.
दर्शने मा कृथा बुद्धिं राघवस्य वरानने ।
कास्य शक्तिरिहागन्तुमपि सीते मनोरथैः ॥२३॥
23. darśane mā kṛthā buddhiṃ rāghavasya varānane ,
kāsya śaktirihāgantumapi sīte manorathaiḥ.
23. darśane mā kṛthāḥ buddhim rāghavasya varānanī
kā asya śaktiḥ iha āgantum api sīte manorathaiḥ
23. varānanī! rāghavasya darśane buddhim mā kṛthāḥ.
sīte! asya iha manorathaiḥ api āgantum kā śaktiḥ?
23. O beautiful-faced one (varānanī), do not even think of seeing Rama (Rāghava). O Sita, what power (śakti) does he have to come here, even by mere wishes?
न शक्यो वायुराकाशे पाशैर्बद्धं महाजवः ।
दीप्यमानस्य वाप्यग्नेर्ग्रहीतुं विमलां शिखाम् ॥२४॥
24. na śakyo vāyurākāśe pāśairbaddhaṃ mahājavaḥ ,
dīpyamānasya vāpyagnergrahītuṃ vimalāṃ śikhām.
24. na śakyaḥ vāyuḥ ākāśe pāśaiḥ baddhum mahājavaḥ vā
api dīpyamānasya agneḥ grahītum vimalām śikhām
24. mahājavaḥ vāyuḥ ākāśe pāśaiḥ baddhum na śakyaḥ vā
api dīpyamānasya agneḥ vimalām śikhām grahītum
24. It is not possible to bind the exceedingly swift wind (vāyu) in the sky with ropes, nor is it possible to grasp the bright flame of a blazing fire.
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां न तं पश्यामि शोभने ।
विक्रमेण नयेद् यस्त्वां मद्बाहुपरिपालिताम् ॥२५॥
25. trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ na taṃ paśyāmi śobhane ,
vikrameṇa nayed yastvāṃ madbāhuparipālitām.
25. trayāṇām api lokānām na tam paśyāmi śobhane
vikrameṇa nayet yaḥ tvām madbāhuparipālitām
25. śobhane trayāṇām api lokānām tam na paśyāmi
yaḥ vikrameṇa madbāhuparipālitām tvām nayet
25. O beautiful one (śobhane), I do not see anyone in all three worlds who, by his valor, could take you away, while you are protected by my arms.
लङ्कायां सुमहद् राज्यमिदं त्वमनुपालय ।
अभिषेकोदकक्लिन्ना तुष्टा च रमयस्व माम् ॥२६॥
26. laṅkāyāṃ sumahad rājyamidaṃ tvamanupālaya ,
abhiṣekodakaklinnā tuṣṭā ca ramayasva mām.
26. laṅkāyām sumahat rājyam idam tvam anupālaya
abhiṣekodakaklinnā tuṣṭā ca ramayasva mām
26. tvam laṅkāyām idam sumahat rājyam anupālaya
ca abhiṣekodakaklinnā tuṣṭā mām ramayasva
26. You should rule this very great kingdom in Laṅkā. And, becoming wet with the waters of coronation and fully satisfied, you should delight me.
दुष्कृतं यत् पुरा कर्म वनवासेन तद्गतम् ।
यश्च ते सुकृतो धर्मस्तस्येह फलमाप्नुहि ॥२७॥
27. duṣkṛtaṃ yat purā karma vanavāsena tadgatam ,
yaśca te sukṛto dharmastasyeha phalamāpnuhi.
27. duṣkṛtam yat purā karma vanavāsena tat gatam yaḥ
ca te sukṛtaḥ dharmaḥ tasya iha phalam āpnuhi
27. yat purā duṣkṛtam karma,
vanavāsena tat gatam ca yaḥ te sukṛtaḥ dharmaḥ,
tasya phalam iha āpnuhi
27. Whatever unwholesome action (karma) you performed previously, that has been removed by your dwelling in the forest. And as for the virtuous conduct (dharma) that is yours, obtain its fruit here.
इह सर्वाणि माल्यानि दिव्यगन्धानि मैथिलि ।
भूषणानि च मुख्यानि तानि सेव मया सह ॥२८॥
28. iha sarvāṇi mālyāni divyagandhāni maithili ,
bhūṣaṇāni ca mukhyāni tāni seva mayā saha.
28. iha sarvāṇi mālyāni divyagandhāni maithili
bhūṣaṇāni ca mukhyāni tāni seva mayā saha
28. maithili iha sarvāṇi divyagandhāni mālyāni
ca mukhyāni bhūṣaṇāni tāni mayā saha seva
28. O Maithili, enjoy all these divinely fragrant garlands and excellent ornaments here with me.
पुष्पकं नाम सुश्रोणि भ्रातुर्वैश्रवणस्य मे ।
विमानं रमणीयं च तद्विमानं मनोजवम् ॥२९॥
29. puṣpakaṃ nāma suśroṇi bhrāturvaiśravaṇasya me ,
vimānaṃ ramaṇīyaṃ ca tadvimānaṃ manojavam.
29. puṣpakam nāma suśroṇi bhrātuḥ vaiśravaṇasya
me vimānam ramaṇīyam ca tat vimānam manojavam
29. suśroṇi me bhrātuḥ vaiśravaṇasya puṣpakam nāma
ramaṇīyam vimānam ca tat vimānam manojavam
29. O lady with beautiful hips (suśroṇi), that delightful aerial chariot (vimāna) named Puṣpaka belongs to my brother Vaiśravaṇa, and it is swift as thought.
तत्र सीते मया सार्धं विहरस्व यथासुखम् ।
वदनं पद्मसंकाशं विमलं चारुदर्शनम् ॥३०॥
30. tatra sīte mayā sārdhaṃ viharasva yathāsukham ,
vadanaṃ padmasaṃkāśaṃ vimalaṃ cārudarśanam.
30. tatra sīte mayā sārdham viharasva yathāsukham
vadanam padmasaṃkāśam vimalam cārudarśanam
30. sīte tatra mayā sārdham yathāsukham viharasva
vadanam padmasaṃkāśam vimalam cārudarśanam
30. O Sita, enjoy yourself there with me, as you wish. Your face, which is like a lotus, spotless, and lovely to behold...
शोकार्तं तु वरारोहे न भ्राजति वरानने ।
अलं व्रीडेन वैदेहि धर्मलोप कृतेन ते ॥३१॥
31. śokārtaṃ tu varārohe na bhrājati varānane ,
alaṃ vrīḍena vaidehi dharmalopa kṛtena te.
31. śokārtam tu varārohe na bhrājati varānanane
alam vrīḍena vaidehi dharmalopa kṛtena te
31. varārohe varānanane tu śokārtam na bhrājati
vaidehi alam vrīḍena te dharmalopa kṛtena
31. O lady with beautiful thighs (varārohe), O lady with a beautiful face (varānanā), your face, afflicted by sorrow, does not shine. O Vaidehi, there is no need for shame on account of the violation of natural law (dharma) that has occurred to you.
आर्षो ऽयं दैवनिष्यन्दो यस्त्वामभिगमिष्यति ।
एतौ पादौ मया स्निग्धौ शिरोभिः परिपीडितौ ॥३२॥
32. ārṣo'yaṃ daivaniṣyando yastvāmabhigamiṣyati ,
etau pādau mayā snigdhau śirobhiḥ paripīḍitau.
32. āṛṣaḥ ayam daivaniṣyandaḥ yaḥ tvām abhigamiṣyati
etau pādau mayā snigdhau śirobhiḥ paripīḍitau
32. ayam āṛṣaḥ daivaniṣyandaḥ yaḥ tvām abhigamiṣyati
mayā śirobhiḥ etau snigdhau pādau paripīḍitau
32. This is a divine decree, originating from a sage, that will come upon you. These two feet [of yours] have been gently touched by my heads.
प्रसादं कुरु मे क्षिप्रं वश्यो दासो ऽहमस्मि ते ।
नेमाः शून्या मया वाचः शुष्यमाणेन भाषिताः ॥३३॥
33. prasādaṃ kuru me kṣipraṃ vaśyo dāso'hamasmi te ,
nemāḥ śūnyā mayā vācaḥ śuṣyamāṇena bhāṣitāḥ.
33. prasādam kuru me kṣipram vaśyaḥ dāsaḥ aham asmi
te na imāḥ śūnyāḥ mayā vācaḥ śuṣyamāṇena bhāṣitāḥ
33. me kṣipram prasādam kuru aham te vaśyaḥ dāsaḥ asmi
imāḥ vācaḥ mayā śuṣyamāṇena śūnyāḥ na bhāṣitāḥ
33. Grant me your favor quickly; I am your obedient servant. These words were not spoken emptily by me, who am wasting away.
न चापि रावणः कां चिन्मूर्ध्ना स्त्रीं प्रणमेत ह ।
एवमुक्त्वा दशग्रीवो मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम् ॥३४॥
34. na cāpi rāvaṇaḥ kāṃ cinmūrdhnā strīṃ praṇameta ha ,
evamuktvā daśagrīvo maithilīṃ janakātmajām.
34. na ca api rāvaṇaḥ kām cit mūrdhnā strīm praṇameta
ha evam uktvā daśagrīvaḥ maithilīm janakātmajām
34. rāvaṇaḥ ca api kām cit strīm mūrdhnā na praṇameta
ha daśagrīvaḥ evam uktvā maithilīm janakātmajām
34. Indeed, Ravana would never bow his head to any woman. Having spoken thus, the ten-headed one [Ravana addressed] Maithili, Janaka's daughter.
कृतान्तवशमापन्नो
ममेयमिति मन्यते ॥३५॥
35. kṛtāntavaśamāpanno
mameyamiti manyate.

mama iyam iti manyate
35. kṛtāntavaśam āpannaḥ
iyam mama iti manyate
35. Having fallen into the power of fate (kṛtānta), he believes, 'She is mine.'
