गतासुं वालिनं दृष्ट्वा राघवस्तदनन्तरम् ।
अब्रवीत् प्रश्रितं वाक्यं सुग्रीवं शत्रुतापनः ॥१॥
1. gatāsuṃ vālinaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāghavastadanantaram ,

1. Seeing Vali, whose life had departed, the scorcher of enemies, Rama (Rāghava), then spoke gentle words to Sugriva.
न शोकपरितापेन श्रेयसा युज्यते मृतः ।
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं तत् समाधातुमर्हथ ॥२॥
2. na śokaparitāpena śreyasā yujyate mṛtaḥ ,
yadatrānantaraṃ kāryaṃ tat samādhātumarhatha.

atra anantaram kāryam tat samādhātum arhatha

2. A deceased person does not gain any benefit (śreyas) from grief and lamentation. Therefore, you should attend to whatever task needs to be done immediately after this.
लोकवृत्तमनुष्ठेयं कृतं वो बाष्पमोक्षणम् ।
न कालादुत्तरं किं चित् कर्म शक्यमुपासितुम् ॥३॥
3. lokavṛttamanuṣṭheyaṃ kṛtaṃ vo bāṣpamokṣaṇam ,
na kālāduttaraṃ kiṃ cit karma śakyamupāsitum.
3. lokavṛttam anuṣṭheyam kṛtam vaḥ bāṣpamokṣaṇam
na kālāt uttaram kiṃ cit karma śakyam upāsitum
3. lokavṛttam anuṣṭheyam vaḥ bāṣpamokṣaṇam kṛtam
kālāt uttaram kiṃ cit karma upāsitum na śakyam
3. Worldly custom (lokavṛtta) should be observed. Your shedding of tears (bāṣpamokṣaṇa) has been completed. No action (karma) can be effectively performed that is beyond its proper time.
नियतः कारणं लोके नियतिः कर्मसाधनम् ।
नियतिः सर्वभूतानां नियोगेष्विह कारणम् ॥४॥
4. niyataḥ kāraṇaṃ loke niyatiḥ karmasādhanam ,
niyatiḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ niyogeṣviha kāraṇam.

niyatiḥ sarva-bhūtānām niyogeṣu iha kāraṇam

4. The fixed order is the cause in the world; destiny (niyati) is the means for all actions (karma). Indeed, destiny (niyati) here is the cause for all beings in their various undertakings.
न कर्ता कस्य चित् कश्चिन्नियोगे चापि नेश्वरः ।
स्वभावे वर्तते लोकस्तस्य कालः परायणम् ॥५॥
5. na kartā kasya cit kaścinniyoge cāpi neśvaraḥ ,
svabhāve vartate lokastasya kālaḥ parāyaṇam.
5. na kartā kasya cit kaścit niyoge ca api na īśvaraḥ
svabhāve vartate lokaḥ tasya kālaḥ parāyaṇam

5. No one is the doer of anything, nor is anyone a master in any specific task. The world operates according to its intrinsic nature, and time is its ultimate support.
न कालः कालमत्येति न कालः परिहीयते ।
स्वभावं वा समासाद्य न कश्चिदतिवर्तते ॥६॥
6. na kālaḥ kālamatyeti na kālaḥ parihīyate ,
svabhāvaṃ vā samāsādya na kaścidativartate.
6. na kālaḥ kālam atyeti na kālaḥ parihīyate
svabhāvam vā samāsādya na kaścit ativartate
6. kālaḥ kālam na atyeti kālaḥ na parihīyate

6. Time does not surpass itself, nor is time ever diminished. Furthermore, no one, having attained their intrinsic nature, can ever transgress it.
न कालस्यास्ति बन्धुत्वं न हेतुर्न पराक्रमः ।
न मित्रज्ञातिसंबन्धः कारणं नात्मनो वशः ॥७॥
7. na kālasyāsti bandhutvaṃ na heturna parākramaḥ ,
na mitrajñātisaṃbandhaḥ kāraṇaṃ nātmano vaśaḥ.
7. na kālasya asti bandhutvam na hetuḥ na parākramaḥ
na mitra-jñāti-saṃbandhaḥ kāraṇam na ātmanaḥ vaśaḥ
7. kālasya bandhutvam na asti hetuḥ na parākramaḥ na
mitra-jñāti-saṃbandhaḥ kāraṇam na ātmanaḥ vaśaḥ na
7. Time has no kinship (bandhutva), no underlying cause, and no individual prowess. No bond with friends or relatives is a cause, nor is the control (vaśa) of the self (ātman).
किं तु काल परीणामो द्रष्टव्यः साधु पश्यता ।
धर्मश्चार्थश्च कामश्च कालक्रमसमाहिताः ॥८॥
8. kiṃ tu kāla parīṇāmo draṣṭavyaḥ sādhu paśyatā ,
dharmaścārthaśca kāmaśca kālakramasamāhitāḥ.
8. kim tu kāla pariṇāmaḥ draṣṭavyaḥ sādhu paśyatā
dharmaḥ ca arthaḥ ca kāmaḥ ca kālakramasamāhitāḥ
8. sādhu paśyatā kāla pariṇāmaḥ draṣṭavyaḥ kim tu
dharmaḥ ca arthaḥ ca kāmaḥ ca kālakramasamāhitāḥ
8. However, one who observes wisely should recognize the transformation brought about by time. Both the pursuit of natural law (dharma), material prosperity (artha), and sensual pleasure (kāma) are all subject to the progression of time.
इतः स्वां प्रकृतिं वाली गतः प्राप्तः क्रियाफलम् ।
धर्मार्थकामसंयोगैः पवित्रं प्लवगेश्वर ॥९॥
9. itaḥ svāṃ prakṛtiṃ vālī gataḥ prāptaḥ kriyāphalam ,
dharmārthakāmasaṃyogaiḥ pavitraṃ plavageśvara.
9. itaḥ svām prakṛtim vālī gataḥ prāptaḥ kriyāphalam
dharmārthakāmasaṃyogaiḥ pavitram plavageśvara
9. plavageśvara itaḥ vālī svām prakṛtim gataḥ

9. Vali has departed from this world to his own essential nature (prakṛti) and has attained the pure fruit of his actions (karma). O king of monkeys, (he did this) by means of the proper integration of natural law (dharma), material prosperity (artha), and sensual pleasure (kāma).
स्वधर्मस्य च संयोगाज्जितस्तेन महात्मना ।
स्वर्गः परिगृहीतश्च प्राणानपरिरक्षता ॥१०॥
10. svadharmasya ca saṃyogājjitastena mahātmanā ,
svargaḥ parigṛhītaśca prāṇānaparirakṣatā.
10. svadharmasya ca saṃyogāt jitaḥ tena mahātmanā
svargaḥ parigṛhītaḥ ca prāṇān aparirakṣatā
10. tena mahātmanā svadharmasya saṃyogāt ca svargaḥ
jitaḥ ca prāṇān aparirakṣatā parigṛhītaḥ
10. And through the proper execution of his own natural law (dharma), heaven was conquered by that great soul (mahātman). He also secured heaven by disregarding his own life (prāṇa).
एषा वै नियतिः श्रेष्ठा यां गतो हरियूथपः ।
तदलं परितापेन प्राप्तकालमुपास्यताम् ॥११॥
11. eṣā vai niyatiḥ śreṣṭhā yāṃ gato hariyūthapaḥ ,
tadalaṃ paritāpena prāptakālamupāsyatām.
11. eṣā vai niyatiḥ śreṣṭhā yām gataḥ hariyūthapaḥ
tat alam paritāpena prāptakālam upāsyatām
11. hariyūthapaḥ yām gataḥ eṣā vai śreṣṭhā niyatiḥ
tat paritāpena alam prāptakālam upāsyatām
11. This is indeed the supreme destiny that the leader of monkeys (Vali) has attained. Therefore, enough with sorrow; let the appropriate time be dealt with.
वचनान्ते तु रामस्य लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ।
अवदत् प्रश्रितं वाक्यं सुग्रीवं गतचेतसं ॥१२॥
12. vacanānte tu rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ,
avadat praśritaṃ vākyaṃ sugrīvaṃ gatacetasaṃ.

avadat praśritam vākyam sugrīvam gatacetasam

12. Lakshmana, the slayer of mighty foes, then addressed humble words to Sugriva, who was overwhelmed with grief, after Rama had finished speaking.
कुरु त्वमस्य सुग्रीव प्रेतकार्यमनन्तरम् ।
ताराङ्गदाभ्यां सहितो वालिनो दहनं प्रति ॥१३॥
13. kuru tvamasya sugrīva pretakāryamanantaram ,
tārāṅgadābhyāṃ sahito vālino dahanaṃ prati.
13. kuru tvam asya sugrīva pretakāryam anantaram
tārāṅgadābhyām sahitaḥ vālinaḥ dahanam prati
13. sugrīva tvam tārāṅgadābhyām sahitaḥ asya

13. O Sugriva, you, accompanied by Tara and Angada, should immediately perform the funeral rites (pretakārya) for his cremation.
समाज्ञापय काष्ठानि शुष्काणि च बहूनि च ।
चन्दनानि च दिव्यानि वालिसंस्कारकारणात् ॥१४॥
14. samājñāpaya kāṣṭhāni śuṣkāṇi ca bahūni ca ,
candanāni ca divyāni vālisaṃskārakāraṇāt.

candanāni ca divyāni vālisaṃskārakāraṇāt

14. Order for many dry logs and excellent sandalwoods to be gathered for Vali's cremation ceremony (saṃskāra).
समाश्वासय चैनं त्वमङ्गदं दीनचेतसं ।
मा भूर्बालिशबुद्धिस्त्वं त्वदधीनमिदं पुरम् ॥१५॥
15. samāśvāsaya cainaṃ tvamaṅgadaṃ dīnacetasaṃ ,
mā bhūrbāliśabuddhistvaṃ tvadadhīnamidaṃ puram.
15. samāśvāsayā ca enam tvam aṅgadam dīnacetasam mā
bhūḥ bāliśabuddhiḥ tvam tvadadhīnam idam puram
15. tvam dīnacetasam enam aṅgadam ca samāśvāsayā.
tvam bāliśabuddhiḥ mā bhūḥ.
idam puram tvadadhīnam
15. And you (Sugriva), console Angada, whose mind is distressed. Do not be childish (bāliśabuddhi). This city is now under your authority.
अङ्गदस्त्वानयेन्माल्यं वस्त्राणि विविधानि च ।
घृतं तैलमथो गन्धान्यच्चात्र समनन्तरम् ॥१६॥
16. aṅgadastvānayenmālyaṃ vastrāṇi vividhāni ca ,
ghṛtaṃ tailamatho gandhānyaccātra samanantaram.
16. aṅgadaḥ tu ānayet mālyam vastrāṇi vividhāni ca
ghṛtam tailam atho gandhān yat ca atra samanantaram
16. Aṅgadaḥ tu mālyam vividhāni vastrāṇi ca ghṛtam
tailam atho gandhān ca yat atra samanantaram ānayet
16. Aṅgada should indeed bring garlands, various garments, ghee, oil, then fragrances, and whatever else is immediately needed thereafter.
त्वं तार शिबिकां शीघ्रमादायागच्छ संभ्रमात् ।
त्वरा गुणवती युक्ता ह्यस्मिन् काले विशेषतः ॥१७॥
17. tvaṃ tāra śibikāṃ śīghramādāyāgaccha saṃbhramāt ,
tvarā guṇavatī yuktā hyasmin kāle viśeṣataḥ.
17. tvam tāra śibikām śīghram ādāya āgaccha saṃbhramāt
tvarā guṇavatī yuktā hi asmin kāle viśeṣataḥ
17. Tāra,
tvam śīghram śibikām ādāya saṃbhramāt āgaccha.
Tvarā hi guṇavatī yuktā viśeṣataḥ asmin kāle (asti)
17. Tāra, you quickly take the palanquin and come immediately with urgency. Haste is indeed meritorious and appropriate, especially at this time.
सज्जीभवन्तु प्लवगाः शिबिकावाहनोचिताः ।
समर्था बलिनश्चैव निर्हरिष्यन्ति वालिनम् ॥१८॥
18. sajjībhavantu plavagāḥ śibikāvāhanocitāḥ ,
samarthā balinaścaiva nirhariṣyanti vālinam.
18. sajjī-bhavantu plavagāḥ śibikāvāhanocitāḥ
samarthāḥ balinaḥ ca eva nirhariṣyanti vālinam
18. Plavagāḥ śibikāvāhanocitāḥ sajī-bhavantu.
Samarthāḥ balinaḥ ca eva vālinam nirhariṣyanti
18. Let the monkeys (plavaga), who are suitable for carrying the palanquin, get ready. Being capable and strong, they will indeed carry Vālin away.
एवमुक्त्वा तु सुग्रीवं सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः ।
तस्थौ भ्रातृसमीपस्थो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ॥१९॥
19. evamuktvā tu sugrīvaṃ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ ,
tasthau bhrātṛsamīpastho lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā.
19. evam uktvā tu sugrīvam sumitrānandavardhanaḥ
tasthau bhrātṛsamīpasthaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
19. Sumitrānandavardhanaḥ paravīrahā Lakṣmaṇaḥ evam
Sugrīvam uktvā tu bhrātṛsamīpasthaḥ tasthau
19. Having spoken thus to Sugrīva, Lakṣmaṇa, who enhanced Sumitrā's joy and was the destroyer of enemy heroes, stood near his brother.
लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा तारः संभ्रान्तमानसः ।
प्रविवेश गुहां शीघ्रं शिबिकासक्तमानसः ॥२०॥
20. lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā tāraḥ saṃbhrāntamānasaḥ ,
praviveśa guhāṃ śīghraṃ śibikāsaktamānasaḥ.
20. lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā tāraḥ sambhrāntamānasaḥ
praviveśa guhām śīghram śibikāsaktamānasaḥ

20. Having heard Lakshmana's words, Tara, with an agitated mind, quickly entered the cave, his thoughts fixed on the palanquin.
आदाय शिबिकां तारः स तु पर्यापयत् पुनः ।
वानरैरुह्यमानां तां शूरैरुद्वहनोचितैः ॥२१॥
21. ādāya śibikāṃ tāraḥ sa tu paryāpayat punaḥ ,
vānarairuhyamānāṃ tāṃ śūrairudvahanocitaiḥ.
21. ādāya śibikām tāraḥ saḥ tu paryāpayat punaḥ
vānaraiḥ uhyamānām tām śūraiḥ udvahanocitaiḥ
21. tāraḥ saḥ tu punaḥ śibikām ādāya udvahanocitaiḥ

21. Having taken the palanquin, Tara then prepared it again, that palanquin which was being carried by brave monkeys, well-suited for the task of bearing it.
ततो वालिनमुद्यम्य सुग्रीवः शिबिकां तदा ।
आरोपयत विक्रोशन्नङ्गदेन सहैव तु ॥२२॥
22. tato vālinamudyamya sugrīvaḥ śibikāṃ tadā ,
āropayata vikrośannaṅgadena sahaiva tu.
22. tataḥ vālinam udyamya sugrīvaḥ śibikām tadā
āropayat vikrośan aṅgadena saha eva tu
22. tataḥ sugrīvaḥ aṅgadena saha eva tu vālinam
udyamya tadā śibikām āropayat vikrośan
22. Then Sugriva, having lifted Vali, placed him on the palanquin at that time, crying out, along with Angada.
आरोप्य शिबिकां चैव वालिनं गतजीवितम् ।
अलंकारैश्च विविधैर्माल्यैर्वस्त्रैश्च भूषितम् ॥२३॥
23. āropya śibikāṃ caiva vālinaṃ gatajīvitam ,
alaṃkāraiśca vividhairmālyairvastraiśca bhūṣitam.
23. āropya śibikām ca eva vālinam gatajīvitam alaṅkāraiḥ
ca vividhaiḥ mālyaiḥ vastraiḥ ca bhūṣitam
23. ca eva śibikām āropya gatajīvitam vālinam vividhaiḥ
alaṅkāraiḥ ca mālyaiḥ ca vastraiḥ bhūṣitam
23. And having indeed placed Vali, who was bereft of life, on the palanquin, adorned with various ornaments, garlands, and garments...
आज्ञापयत्तदा राजा सुग्रीवः प्लवगेश्वरः ।
और्ध्वदेहिकमार्यस्य क्रियतामनुरूपतः ॥२४॥
24. ājñāpayattadā rājā sugrīvaḥ plavageśvaraḥ ,
aurdhvadehikamāryasya kriyatāmanurūpataḥ.
24. ājñāpayat tadā rājā Sugrīvaḥ plavageśvaraḥ
aurdhvadehakam āryasya kriyatām anurūpataḥ
24. tadā rājā plavageśvaraḥ Sugrīvaḥ āryasya
aurdhvadehakam anurūpataḥ kriyatām ājñāpayat
24. Then King Sugriva, the lord of the monkeys, commanded, "Let the post-mortem rites for the noble one (Vali) be performed in a fitting manner."
विश्राणयन्तो रत्नानि विविधानि बहूनि च ।
अग्रतः प्लवगा यान्तु शिबिका तदनन्तरम् ॥२५॥
25. viśrāṇayanto ratnāni vividhāni bahūni ca ,
agrataḥ plavagā yāntu śibikā tadanantaram.
25. viśrāṇayantaḥ ratnāni vividhāni bahūni ca
agrataḥ plavagāḥ yāntu śibikā tadanantaram
25. ratnāni vividhāni bahūni ca viśrāṇayantaḥ

25. Let the monkeys, distributing various and many jewels, go in front; the palanquin should follow immediately after.
राज्ञामृद्धिविशेषा हि दृश्यन्ते भुवि यादृशाः ।
तादृशं वालिनः क्षिप्रं प्राकुर्वन्नौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ॥२६॥
26. rājñāmṛddhiviśeṣā hi dṛśyante bhuvi yādṛśāḥ ,
tādṛśaṃ vālinaḥ kṣipraṃ prākurvannaurdhvadehikam.
26. rājñām ṛddhiviśeṣāḥ hi dṛśyante bhuvi yādṛśāḥ
tādṛśam Vālinaḥ kṣipram prākurvan aurdhvadehakam
26. hi bhuvi yādṛśāḥ rājñām ṛddhiviśeṣāḥ dṛśyante,
Vālinaḥ tādṛśam aurdhvadehakam kṣipram prākurvan
26. Indeed, just as special displays of prosperity and power belonging to kings are seen on earth, so too did they quickly perform such post-mortem rites for Vali.
अङ्गदमप्रिगृह्याशु तारप्रभृतयस्तथा ।
क्रोशन्तः प्रययुः सर्वे वानरा हतबान्धवाः ॥२७॥
27. aṅgadamaprigṛhyāśu tāraprabhṛtayastathā ,
krośantaḥ prayayuḥ sarve vānarā hatabāndhavāḥ.
27. Aṅgadam aprigṛhya āśu Tāraprabhṛtayaḥ tathā
krośantaḥ prayayuḥ sarve vānarāḥ hatabāndhavāḥ
27. Tāraprabhṛtayaḥ tathā sarve hatabāndhavāḥ
vānarāḥ Aṅgadam aprigṛhya āśu krośantaḥ prayayuḥ
27. Tara and others, likewise, all the monkeys who had lost their kinsman, quickly went forth crying, holding Angada closely.
ताराप्रभृतयः सर्वा वानर्यो हतयूथपाः ।
अनुजग्मुर्हि भर्तारं क्रोशन्त्यः करुणस्वनाः ॥२८॥
28. tārāprabhṛtayaḥ sarvā vānaryo hatayūthapāḥ ,
anujagmurhi bhartāraṃ krośantyaḥ karuṇasvanāḥ.
28. tārāprabhṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ vānaryaḥ hatayūthapāḥ
anujagmuḥ hi bhartāram krośantyaḥ karuṇasvanāḥ

28. Tārā and all the other female monkeys, whose troop leaders had been slain, indeed followed their lord, crying out with piteous sounds.
तासां रुदितशब्देन वानरीणां वनान्तरे ।
वनानि गिरयः सर्वे विक्रोशन्तीव सर्वतः ॥२९॥
29. tāsāṃ ruditaśabdena vānarīṇāṃ vanāntare ,
vanāni girayaḥ sarve vikrośantīva sarvataḥ.
29. tāsām ruditaśabdena vānarīṇām vanāntare
vanāni girayaḥ sarve vikrośanti iva sarvataḥ

29. By the sound of the female monkeys' weeping within the forest, all the forests and mountains, as if themselves crying out, echoed from every direction.
पुलिने गिरिनद्यास्तु विविक्ते जलसंवृते ।
चितां चक्रुः सुबहवो वानरा वनचारिणः ॥३०॥
30. puline girinadyāstu vivikte jalasaṃvṛte ,
citāṃ cakruḥ subahavo vānarā vanacāriṇaḥ.

30. On a secluded sandbank of the mountain river, which was encompassed by water, very many forest-dwelling monkeys then constructed a funeral pyre.
अवरोप्य ततः स्कन्धाच्छिबिकां वहनोचिताः ।
तस्थुरेकान्तमाश्रित्य सर्वे शोकसमन्विताः ॥३१॥
31. avaropya tataḥ skandhācchibikāṃ vahanocitāḥ ,

31. Then, having lowered the litter - which they were accustomed to carrying - from their shoulders, all of them, overcome with grief, stood, having resorted to a solitary spot.
ततस्तारा पतिं दृष्ट्वा शिबिकातलशायिनम् ।
आरोप्याङ्के शिरस्तस्य विललाप सुदुःखिता ॥३२॥
32. tatastārā patiṃ dṛṣṭvā śibikātalaśāyinam ,
āropyāṅke śirastasya vilalāpa suduḥkhitā.

āropya aṅke śiras tasya vilalāpa suduḥkhitā

32. Then Tara, seeing her husband lying on the litter, placed his head upon her lap and, greatly distressed, began to lament.
जनं च पश्यसीमं त्वं कस्माच्छोकाभिपीडितम् ।
प्रहृष्टमिव ते वक्त्रं गतासोरपि मानद ।
अस्तार्कसमवर्णं च लक्ष्यते जीवतो यथा ॥३३॥
33. janaṃ ca paśyasīmaṃ tvaṃ kasmācchokābhipīḍitam ,
prahṛṣṭamiva te vaktraṃ gatāsorapi mānada ,
astārkasamavarṇaṃ ca lakṣyate jīvato yathā.
33. janam ca paśyasi imam tvam kasmāt
śokābhipīḍitam prahr̥ṣṭam iva te
vaktram gatāsoḥ api mānada
astārkasamavarṇam ca lakṣyate jīvataḥ yathā
33. mānada,
tvam imam śokābhipīḍitam janam ca paśyasi,
kasmāt? api gatāsoḥ te vaktram prahr̥ṣṭam iva (lakṣyate),
ca astārkasamavarṇam jīvataḥ yathā (lakṣyate).
33. You see this crowd, so deeply afflicted by sorrow, yet why is your face, O giver of honor, joyful even in death? It appears the color of the setting sun, as if you are still alive.
एष त्वां रामरूपेण कालः कर्षति वानर ।
येन स्म विधवाः सर्वाः कृता एकेषुणा रणे ॥३४॥
34. eṣa tvāṃ rāmarūpeṇa kālaḥ karṣati vānara ,
yena sma vidhavāḥ sarvāḥ kṛtā ekeṣuṇā raṇe.

yena sma vidhavāḥ sarvāḥ kr̥tāḥ ekeṣuṇā raṇe
34. vānara,
eṣaḥ kālaḥ rāmarūpeṇa tvām karṣati,
yena raṇe ekeṣuṇā sarvāḥ vidhavāḥ kr̥tāḥ sma.
34. O Vanara, it is Death, in the guise of Rama, who drags you away, the very one by whom all these women have been made widows with a single arrow in this battle.
इमास्तास्तव राजेन्द्रवानर्यो वल्लभाः सदा ।
पादैर्विकृष्टमध्वानमागताः किं न बुध्यसे ॥३५॥
35. imāstāstava rājendravānaryo vallabhāḥ sadā ,
pādairvikṛṣṭamadhvānamāgatāḥ kiṃ na budhyase.
35. imāḥ tāḥ tava rājendra vānaryaḥ vallabhāḥ sadā
pādaiḥ vikr̥ṣṭam adhvānam āgatāḥ kim na budhyase
35. rājendra,
sadā tava imāḥ tāḥ vallabhāḥ vānaryaḥ (āgatāḥ).
(tāḥ) pādaiḥ vikr̥ṣṭam adhvānam āgatāḥ.
kim na budhyase?
35. O best of kings, these are your beloved monkey-women who have come a long way, having traversed a difficult path with their feet. Why do you not recognize them?
तवेष्टा ननु नामैता भार्याश्चन्द्रनिभाननाः ।
इदानीं नेक्षसे कस्मात् सुग्रीवं प्लवगेश्वरम् ॥३६॥
36. taveṣṭā nanu nāmaitā bhāryāścandranibhānanāḥ ,
idānīṃ nekṣase kasmāt sugrīvaṃ plavageśvaram.
36. tava iṣṭāḥ nanu nāma etāḥ bhāryāḥ candranibhānanāḥ
idānīm na īkṣase kasmāt sugrīvam plavageśvaram
36. nanu tava candranibhānanāḥ etāḥ bhāryāḥ iṣṭāḥ (santi)
idānīm kasmāt sugrīvam plavageśvaram na īkṣase
36. These wives, whose faces are like the moon, are surely dear to you. Why do you not look at Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, now?
एते हि सचिवा राजंस्तारप्रभृतयस्तव ।
पुरवासिजनश्चायं परिवार्यासते ऽनघ ॥३७॥
37. ete hi sacivā rājaṃstāraprabhṛtayastava ,
puravāsijanaścāyaṃ parivāryāsate'nagha.
37. ete hi sacivāḥ rājan tāraprabhṛtayaḥ tava
puravāsijanaḥ ca ayam parivārya āsate anagha
37. rājan anagha hi ete tāraprabhṛtayaḥ tava sacivāḥ
(santi) ca ayam puravāsijanaḥ parivārya āsate
37. Indeed, O King, these ministers, with Tārā and others, are yours. And these citizens, O sinless one, are also sitting around you.
विसर्जयैनान्प्रवलान्यथोचितमरिंदम ।
ततः क्रीडामहे सर्वा वनेषु मदिरोत्कटाः ॥३८॥
38. visarjayainānpravalānyathocitamariṃdama ,
tataḥ krīḍāmahe sarvā vaneṣu madirotkaṭāḥ.
38. visarjaya enān pravalān yathā ucitam arimdama
tataḥ krīḍāmahe sarvāḥ vaneṣu madirotkaṭāḥ

38. O foe-subduer, dismiss these strong ones as is appropriate. Then, all of us, feeling intense joy from wine, shall play in the forests.
एवं विलपतीं तारां पतिशोकपरिप्लुताम् ।
उत्थापयन्ति स्म तदा वानर्यः शोककर्शिताः ॥३९॥
39. evaṃ vilapatīṃ tārāṃ patiśokapariplutām ,
utthāpayanti sma tadā vānaryaḥ śokakarśitāḥ.

39. Thus, the female monkeys, weakened by their own grief, then helped up Tārā, who was lamenting and completely overwhelmed by the sorrow for her husband.
सुग्रीवेण ततः सार्धमङ्गदः पितरं रुदन् ।
चितामारोपयामास शोकेनाभिहतेन्द्रियः ॥४०॥
40. sugrīveṇa tataḥ sārdhamaṅgadaḥ pitaraṃ rudan ,
citāmāropayāmāsa śokenābhihatendriyaḥ.

40. Then, Angada, weeping and whose senses were overwhelmed by grief, along with Sugriva, placed his father on the funeral pyre.
ततो ऽग्निं विधिवद्दत्त्वा सो ऽपसव्यं चकार ह ।
पितरं दीर्घमध्वानं प्रस्थितं व्याकुलेन्द्रियः ॥४१॥
41. tato'gniṃ vidhivaddattvā so'pasavyaṃ cakāra ha ,
pitaraṃ dīrghamadhvānaṃ prasthitaṃ vyākulendriyaḥ.
41. tataḥ agnim vidhivat dattvā saḥ apasavyam cakāra ha
pitaram dīrgham adhvānam prasthitam vyākulendriyaḥ
41. tataḥ saḥ vyākulendriyaḥ vidhivat agnim dattvā ha
pitaram dīrgham adhvānam prasthitam apasavyam cakāra
41. Then, having ritually offered the fire, he (Angada), whose senses were agitated, performed the ritual anti-clockwise circumambulation for his father, who had set out on the long journey (of death).
संस्कृत्य वालिनं ते तु विधिपूर्वं प्लवंगमाः ।
आजग्मुरुदकं कर्तुं नदीं शीतजलां शुभाम् ॥४२॥
42. saṃskṛtya vālinaṃ te tu vidhipūrvaṃ plavaṃgamāḥ ,
ājagmurudakaṃ kartuṃ nadīṃ śītajalāṃ śubhām.

ājagmuḥ udakam kartum nadīm śītajalām śubhām

42. And those monkeys, having performed the funeral rites for Vali according to tradition, came to an auspicious river with cool waters to offer water libations.
ततस्ते सहितास्तत्र अङ्गदं स्थाप्य चाग्रतः ।
सुग्रीवतारासहिताः सिषिचुर्वालिने जलम् ॥४३॥
43. tataste sahitāstatra aṅgadaṃ sthāpya cāgrataḥ ,
sugrīvatārāsahitāḥ siṣicurvāline jalam.
43. tataḥ te sahitāḥ tatra aṅgadam sthāpya ca
agrataḥ sugrīvatārāsahitāḥ siṣicuḥ vāline jalam
43. tataḥ te sahitāḥ tatra sugrīvatārāsahitāḥ

43. Then, gathered there, they, accompanied by Sugriva and Tara, placed Angada at the front and sprinkled water for Vali.
सुग्रीवेणैव दीनेन दीनो भूत्वा महाबलः ।
समानशोकः काकुत्स्थः प्रेतकार्याण्यकारयत् ॥४४॥
44. sugrīveṇaiva dīnena dīno bhūtvā mahābalaḥ ,
samānaśokaḥ kākutsthaḥ pretakāryāṇyakārayat.

44. The mighty Kakutstha (Rama), sharing the same sorrow as the distressed Sugriva, became sorrowful himself and arranged for the performance of the funeral rites for the deceased.
