Those two princes, Rama and Lakshmana, then took the westward direction, following the path to Pampa that had been shown to them by Kabandha in the forest.
तौ शैलेष्वाचितानेकान् क्षौद्रकल्पफलद्रुमान् ।
वीक्षन्तौ जग्मतुर्द्रष्टुं सुग्रीवं रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥२॥

Observing the many fruit-bearing trees resembling honey on the mountains, Rama and Lakshmana proceeded to meet Sugriva.
कृत्वा च शैलपृष्ठे तु तौ वासं रघुनन्दनौ ।

Having made their dwelling on the mountain peak, those two delights of Raghu's lineage, Rama and Lakshmana, then approached the western bank of Pampa.

Having reached the western bank of the Pampa lake (puṣkariṇī), those two then saw there the charming hermitage (āśrama) belonging to Shabari.
तौ तमाश्रममासाद्य द्रुमैर्बहुभिरावृतम् ।
सुरम्यमभिवीक्षन्तौ शबरीमभ्युपेयतुः ॥५॥

Having reached that hermitage (āśrama), which was surrounded by many trees and was very charming, those two (Rama and Lakshmana), beholding its beauty, approached Shabari.
तौ तु दृष्ट्वा तदा सिद्धा समुत्थाय कृताञ्जलिः ।
पादौ जग्राह रामस्य लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः ॥६॥

Then, the perfected ascetic (siddhā) Shabari, upon seeing them both, rose up and, with folded hands (kṛtāñjali), grasped the feet of Rama and of the wise Lakshmana.

कच्चित्ते निर्जिता विघ्नाः कच्चित्ते वर्धते तपः ॥७॥

Then Rama spoke to that female ascetic of firm vows: "Have your obstacles been overcome? And does your asceticism (tapas) flourish?"
कच्चित्ते नियतः कोप आहारश्च तपोधने ।
कच्चित्ते नियमाः प्राप्ताः कच्चित्ते मनसः सुखम् ।
कच्चित्ते गुरुशुश्रूषा सफला चारुभाषिणि ॥८॥

8. kaccitte niyataḥ kopa āhāraśca tapodhane ,

te kopaḥ niyataḥ kaccit? ca āhāraḥ kaccit (niyataḥ)? te niyamāḥ kaccit prāptāḥ? te manasaḥ sukham kaccit (asti)? cārubhāṣiṇi,
te guruśuśrūṣā कच्चित् safalā (asti)?

O ascetic, is your anger controlled and your diet regulated? Have your observances been achieved? Is there peace of mind for you? O sweet-speaking one, has your service to your guru been fruitful?
रामेण तापसी पृष्ठा सा सिद्धा सिद्धसंमता ।
शशंस शबरी वृद्धा रामाय प्रत्युपस्थिता ॥९॥

9. rāmeṇa tāpasī pṛṣṭhā sā siddhā siddhasaṃmatā ,

Questioned by Rama, that perfected female ascetic, honored by other perfected ones, the old Śabarī, standing before Rama, replied.
चित्रकूटं त्वयि प्राप्ते विमानैरतुलप्रभैः ।
इतस्ते दिवमारूढा यानहं पर्यचारिषम् ॥१०॥

10. citrakūṭaṃ tvayi prāpte vimānairatulaprabhaiḥ ,
itaste divamārūḍhā yānahaṃ paryacāriṣam.

10.
When you arrived at Citrakūṭa, those whom I had served ascended to heaven from here in celestial vehicles of unmatched splendor.
तैश्चाहमुक्ता धर्मज्ञैर्महाभागैर्महर्षिभिः ।
आगमिष्यति ते रामः सुपुण्यमिममाश्रमम् ॥११॥

11. taiścāhamuktā dharmajñairmahābhāgairmaharṣibhiḥ ,

11.
taiḥ dharma-jñaiḥ mahā-bhāgaiḥ mahā-ṛṣibhiḥ ca aham uktā.
rāmaḥ te imam su-puṇyam āśramam āgamiṣyati.
rāmaḥ te imam su-puṇyam āśramam āgamiṣyati.

And I was told by those great sages, who are wise in the ways of natural law (dharma) and highly revered: 'Rāma will come to you, to this very sacred hermitage (āśrama).'
स ते प्रतिग्रहीतव्यः सौमित्रिसहितो ऽतिथिः ।
तं च दृष्ट्वा वरांल् लोकानक्षयांस्त्वं गमिष्यसि ॥१२॥

12. sa te pratigrahītavyaḥ saumitrisahito'tithiḥ ,
taṃ ca dṛṣṭvā varāṃl lokānakṣayāṃstvaṃ gamiṣyasi.

saḥ te prati-grahītavyaḥ saumitri-sahitaḥ atithiḥ
tam ca dṛṣṭvā varān lokān akṣayān tvam gamiṣyasi

saḥ saumitri-sahitaḥ atithiḥ te prati-grahītavyaḥ.
tvam ca tam dṛṣṭvā varān akṣayān lokān gamiṣyasi.

You must receive him, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa (Saumitri), as your guest. And by seeing him, you will attain excellent, imperishable realms.
मया तु विविधं वन्यं संचितं पुरुषर्षभ ।
तवार्थे पुरुषव्याघ्र पम्पायास्तीरसंभवम् ॥१३॥

13. mayā tu vividhaṃ vanyaṃ saṃcitaṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
tavārthe puruṣavyāghra pampāyāstīrasaṃbhavam.

puruṣa-ṛṣabha! puruṣa-vyāghra! mayā tu tava-arthe pampāyāḥ tīra-saṃbhavam vividham vanyam saṃcitam.
13.
But, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), I have gathered various forest provisions for your sake, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), provisions that grow on the banks of Pampa.
एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा शबर्या शबरीमिदम् ।
राघवः प्राह विज्ञाने तां नित्यमबहिष्कृताम् ॥१४॥

14. evamuktaḥ sa dharmātmā śabaryā śabarīmidam ,
rāghavaḥ prāha vijñāne tāṃ nityamabahiṣkṛtām.

śabaryā evam uktaḥ saḥ dharma-ātmā rāghavaḥ vijñāne nityam a-bahiṣkṛtām tām śabarīm idam prāha.

Thus addressed by Śabarī, that righteous-souled (dharma) Rāghava then spoke these words to Śabarī, who was ever proficient in spiritual knowledge (vijñāna) and never excluded from it.
दनोः सकाशात्तत्त्वेन प्रभावं ते महात्मनः ।
श्रुतं प्रत्यक्षमिच्छामि संद्रष्टुं यदि मन्यसे ॥१५॥

15. danoḥ sakāśāttattvena prabhāvaṃ te mahātmanaḥ ,

From Danu's account, I wish to directly see the true nature of your greatness (prabhāva), of which I have heard, if you agree.

Having heard these words that had emerged from Rāma's mouth, Śabarī then showed both of them that great forest.
पश्य मेघघनप्रख्यं मृगपक्षिसमाकुलम् ।

O scion of Raghu (Raghunandana), behold this Matanga forest, renowned as such, resembling dense clouds and teeming with deer and birds.

जुहवांश्चक्रिरे तीर्थं मन्त्रवन्मन्त्रपूजितम् ॥१८॥

18. iha te bhāvitātmāno guravo me mahādyute ,

O greatly effulgent one (Mahādyute), here my enlightened (bhāvitātmānaḥ) gurus performed Vedic fire rituals (homa) at this sacred bathing place (tīrtha), using mantras, a place already consecrated by mantras.
इयं प्रत्यक् स्थली वेदी यत्र ते मे सुसत्कृताः ।
पुष्पोपहारं कुर्वन्ति श्रमादुद्वेपिभिः करैः ॥१९॥

19. iyaṃ pratyak sthalī vedī yatra te me susatkṛtāḥ ,

This western area is a sacred ground (vedī) where those who were well-honored by me perform flower offerings with hands trembling from exhaustion.
तेषां तपः प्रभावेन पश्याद्यापि रघूत्तम ।

O best of Raghu's lineage (Raghūttama), behold! Even today, by the power of their asceticism (tapas), all directions shine with splendor, and the altars (vedī) possess incomparable radiance.

Behold, when they, exhausted and unable to move due to fasting and fatigue, merely thought of them, the seven oceans arrived, gathered together.

O delight of Raghu (Raghunandana), even today in this region, the bark garments (valkalāḥ) placed on the trees here by those who had performed their ablutions do not dry up.
कृत्स्नं वनमिदं दृष्टं श्रोतव्यं च श्रुतं त्वया ।
तदिच्छाम्यभ्यनुज्ञाता त्यक्तुमेतत् कलेवरम् ॥२३॥

This entire forest has been seen, and all that was to be heard has been heard by me. Therefore, having received your permission, I wish to abandon this body.
तेषामिच्छाम्यहं गन्तुं समीपं भावितात्मनाम् ।
मुनीनामाश्रंमो येषामहं च परिचारिणी ॥२४॥

I wish to go near those sages (muni) whose inner selves (ātman) are purified, and whose hermitage (āśrama) I was an attendant.
धर्मिष्ठं तु वचः श्रुत्वा राघवः सहलक्ष्मणः ।
अनुजानामि गच्छेति प्रहृष्टवदनो ऽब्रवीत् ॥२५॥

But having heard her most righteous (dharma) words, Rāghava, along with Lakṣmaṇa, spoke with a joyful face, saying, "I permit you; go!"

ज्वलत्पावकसंकाशा स्वर्गमेव जगाम सा ॥२६॥

But, permitted by Rāma, she, shining like a blazing fire, offered her own self (ātman) into the fire and went straight to heaven.

तत् पुण्यं शबरीस्थानं जगामात्मसमाधिना ॥२७॥

Where those great sages (maharṣayaḥ) with righteous souls (sukṛtātmāno) reside, to that sacred place, Shabarī's abode, he arrived with deep inner focus (ātmasamādhi).
