पूर्वजो ऽप्युक्तमात्रस्तु लक्ष्मणेन सुभाषितम् ।
सारग्राही महासारं प्रतिजग्राह राघवः ॥१॥
1. pūrvajo'pyuktamātrastu lakṣmaṇena subhāṣitam ,
sāragrāhī mahāsāraṃ pratijagrāha rāghavaḥ.

1. The elder brother (pūrvaja), Rama (rāghava), who discerns the essence (sāragrāhī), just after he had been addressed by Lakshmana with his eloquent words, accepted their profound substance.
संनिगृह्य महाबाहुः प्रवृद्धं कोपमात्मनः ।
अवष्टभ्य धनुश्चित्रं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. saṃnigṛhya mahābāhuḥ pravṛddhaṃ kopamātmanaḥ ,
avaṣṭabhya dhanuścitraṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt.
2. saṃnigṛhya mahābāhuḥ pravṛddham kopam ātmanaḥ
avaṣṭabhya dhanuḥ citram rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt

2. The mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Rama, having restrained his own (ātman) greatly intensified anger, and having firmly grasped his wondrous bow, spoke to Lakshmana.
किं करिष्यावहे वत्स क्व वा गच्छाव लक्ष्मण ।
केनोपायेन पश्येयं सीतामिति विचिन्तय ॥३॥
3. kiṃ kariṣyāvahe vatsa kva vā gacchāva lakṣmaṇa ,
kenopāyena paśyeyaṃ sītāmiti vicintaya.
3. kim kariṣyāvahe vatsa kva vā gacchāva lakṣmaṇa
kena upāyena paśyeyam sītām iti vicintaya
3. vatsa lakṣmaṇa,
kim kariṣyāvahe? vā kva gacchāva? kena upāyena sītām paśyeyam iti vicintaya.
3. My dear son (vatsa), what are we to do? Or where are we to go, Lakshmana? Consider this: by what means might I see Sita?
तं तथा परितापार्तं लक्ष्मणो राममब्रवीत् ।
इदमेव जनस्थानं त्वमन्वेषितुमर्हसि ॥४॥
4. taṃ tathā paritāpārtaṃ lakṣmaṇo rāmamabravīt ,
idameva janasthānaṃ tvamanveṣitumarhasi.
4. tam tathā paritāpārtam lakṣmaṇaḥ rāmam abravīt
idam eva janasthānam tvam anveṣitum arhasi

4. Lakshmana then spoke to Rama, who was thus greatly distressed by sorrow: "You ought to search this very Janasthana."
राक्षसैर्बहुभिः कीर्णं नानाद्रुमलतायुतम् ।
सन्तीह गिरिदुर्गाणि निर्दराः कन्दराणि च ॥५॥
5. rākṣasairbahubhiḥ kīrṇaṃ nānādrumalatāyutam ,
santīha giridurgāṇi nirdarāḥ kandarāṇi ca.
5. rākṣasaiḥ bahubhiḥ kīrṇam nānādrumalatāyutam
santi iha giridurgāṇi nirdarāḥ kandarāṇi ca
5. (janasthānaṃ) bahubhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ kīrṇam nānādrumalatāyutam
(asti) iha giridurgāṇi nirdarāḥ kandarāṇi ca santi
5. [Janasthana is] teeming with many demons (rākṣasa), adorned with various trees and vines. Here there are difficult mountain passes, ravines, and caves.
गुहाश्च विविधा घोरा नानामृगगणाकुलाः ।
आवासाः किंनराणां च गन्धर्वभवनानि च ॥६॥
6. guhāśca vividhā ghorā nānāmṛgagaṇākulāḥ ,
āvāsāḥ kiṃnarāṇāṃ ca gandharvabhavanāni ca.
6. guhāḥ ca vividhāḥ ghorāḥ nānāmṛgagaṇākulāḥ
āvāsāḥ kinnarāṇām ca gandharvabhavanāni ca
6. vividhāḥ ghorāḥ nānāmṛgagaṇākulāḥ guhāḥ ca (santi)
kinnarāṇām āvāsāḥ ca gandharvabhavanāni ca (santi)
6. And various dreadful caves, teeming with herds of diverse animals. Also, there are abodes of Kinnaras and celestial palaces of Gandharvas.
तानि युक्तो मया सार्धं त्वमन्वेषितुमर्हसि ।
त्वद्विधो बुद्धिसंपन्ना माहात्मानो नरर्षभ ॥७॥
7. tāni yukto mayā sārdhaṃ tvamanveṣitumarhasi ,
tvadvidho buddhisaṃpannā māhātmāno nararṣabha.
7. tāni yuktaḥ mayā sārdham tvam anveṣitum arhasi
tvadvidhaḥ buddhisampannaḥ mahātmā nararṣabha
7. nararṣabha! mayā sārdham yuktaḥ tvam tāni anveṣitum arhasi.
tvadvidhaḥ buddhisampannaḥ mahātmā (evaṃ kurvanti)
7. You, accompanied by me, ought to search those places. O best among men (nararṣabha), one like you, endowed with great intelligence and a magnanimous spirit, should do so.
आपत्सु न प्रकम्पन्ते वायुवेगैरिवाचलाः ।
इत्युक्तस्तद्वनं सर्वं विचचार सलक्ष्मणः ॥८॥
8. āpatsu na prakampante vāyuvegairivācalāḥ ,
ityuktastadvanaṃ sarvaṃ vicacāra salakṣmaṇaḥ.
8. āpatsu na prakampante vāyuvegaiḥ iva acalāḥ
iti uktaḥ tat vanam sarvam vicacāra salakṣmaṇaḥ
8. acalāḥ iva vāyuvegaiḥ āpatsu na prakampante.
iti uktaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ tat sarvam vanam vicacāra.
8. They do not waver in calamities, just as immovable mountains do not tremble from the force of winds. Having been addressed thus, he (Rama), accompanied by Lakshmana, then searched that entire forest.
क्रुद्धो रामः शरं घोरं संधाय धनुषि क्षुरम् ।
ततः पर्वतकूटाभं महाभागं द्विजोत्तमम् ॥९॥
9. kruddho rāmaḥ śaraṃ ghoraṃ saṃdhāya dhanuṣi kṣuram ,
tataḥ parvatakūṭābhaṃ mahābhāgaṃ dvijottamam.
9. kruddhaḥ rāmaḥ śaram ghoram saṃdhāya dhanuṣi kṣuram
tataḥ parvatakūṭābham mahābhāgam dvijottamam
9. tataḥ kruddhaḥ rāmaḥ dhanuṣi ghoram kṣuram śaram
saṃdhāya parvatakūṭābham mahābhāgam dvijottamam
9. Then, the enraged Rama, having fitted a terrible, razor-sharp arrow onto his bow, (saw) the greatly noble, excellent bird, who resembled a mountain peak.
ददर्श पतितं भूमौ क्षतजार्द्रं जटायुषम् ।
तं दृष्ट्वा गिरिशृङ्गाभं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ।
अनेन सीता वैदेही भक्षिता नात्र संशयः ॥१०॥
10. dadarśa patitaṃ bhūmau kṣatajārdraṃ jaṭāyuṣam ,
taṃ dṛṣṭvā giriśṛṅgābhaṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt ,
anena sītā vaidehī bhakṣitā nātra saṃśayaḥ.
10. dadarśa patitam bhūmau kṣatajārdram
jaṭāyuṣam tam dṛṣṭvā giriśṛṅgābham
rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt anena
sītā vaidehī bhakṣitā na atra saṃśayaḥ
10. bhūmau kṣatajārdram patitam jaṭāyuṣam dadarśa.
giriśṛṅgābham tam dṛṣṭvā rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt.
anena sītā vaidehī bhakṣitā.
atra saṃśayaḥ na.
10. He then saw Jatayu fallen on the ground, soaked in blood. Having seen him, who resembled a mountain peak, Rama spoke to Lakshmana: 'There is no doubt that Sita, the princess of Videha, has been devoured by this (creature).'
गृध्ररूपमिदं व्यक्तं रक्षो भ्रमति काननम् ।
भक्षयित्वा विशालाक्षीमास्ते सीतां यथासुखम् ।
एनं वधिष्ये दीप्ताग्रैर्घोरैर्बाणैरजिह्मगैः ॥११॥
11. gṛdhrarūpamidaṃ vyaktaṃ rakṣo bhramati kānanam ,
bhakṣayitvā viśālākṣīmāste sītāṃ yathāsukham ,
enaṃ vadhiṣye dīptāgrairghorairbāṇairajihmagaiḥ.
11. gṛdhrarūpam idam vyaktam rakṣaḥ bhramati
kānanam bhakṣayitvā viśālākṣīm
āste sītām yathāsukham enam vadhiṣye
dīptāgraiḥ ghoraiḥ bāṇaiḥ ajihmagaiḥ
11. idam rakṣaḥ gṛdhrarūpam vyaktam kānanam bhramati.
viśālākṣīm sītām bhakṣayitvā yathāsukham āste.
enam dīptāgraiḥ ghoraiḥ ajihmagaiḥ bāṇaiḥ vadhiṣye.
11. This demon, clearly disguised in the form of a vulture, roams the forest. Having devoured the wide-eyed Sita, it now rests at ease. I shall kill this one with terrible, sharp-tipped, and unerring arrows.
इत्युक्त्वाभ्यपतद्गृध्रं संधाय धनुषि क्षुरम् ।
क्रुद्धो रामः समुद्रान्तां चालयन्निव मेदिनीम् ॥१२॥
12. ityuktvābhyapatadgṛdhraṃ saṃdhāya dhanuṣi kṣuram ,
kruddho rāmaḥ samudrāntāṃ cālayanniva medinīm.
12. iti uktvā abhyapatat gṛdhram saṃdhāya dhanuṣi kṣuram
kruddhaḥ rāmaḥ samudrāntām cālayan iva medinīm
12. rāmaḥ kruddhaḥ iti uktvā dhanuṣi kṣuram saṃdhāya
samudrāntām medinīm cālayan iva gṛdhram abhyapatat
12. Having spoken thus, the enraged Rāma, as if shaking the entire earth bounded by the oceans, attacked the vulture, fitting a razor-sharp arrow to his bow.
तं दीनदीनया वाचा सफेनं रुधिरं वमन् ।
अभ्यभाषत पक्षी तु रामं दशरथात्मजम् ॥१३॥
13. taṃ dīnadīnayā vācā saphenaṃ rudhiraṃ vaman ,
abhyabhāṣata pakṣī tu rāmaṃ daśarathātmajam.
13. tam dīnadīnayā vācā saphenam rudhiram vaman
abhyabhāṣata pakṣī tu rāmam daśarathātmajam
13. pakṣī tu dīnadīnayā vācā saphenam rudhiram
vaman tam daśarathātmajam rāmam abhyabhāṣata
13. But the bird, vomiting frothy blood, addressed Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, with a voice that was exceedingly piteous.
यामोषधिमिवायुष्मन्नन्वेषसि महावने ।
सा देवी मम च प्राणा रावणेनोभयं हृतम् ॥१४॥
14. yāmoṣadhimivāyuṣmannanveṣasi mahāvane ,
sā devī mama ca prāṇā rāvaṇenobhayaṃ hṛtam.
14. yām oṣadhim iva āyuṣman anveṣasi mahāvane sā
devī mama ca prāṇāḥ rāvaṇena ubhayam hṛtam
14. āyuṣman mahāvane yām oṣadhim iva anveṣasi sā
devī ca mama prāṇāḥ ubhayam rāvaṇena hṛtam
14. O long-lived one, she whom you are searching for in this great forest as if she were a medicinal herb, that very goddess (Sītā) and my life - both have been carried away by Rāvaṇa.
त्वया विरहिता देवी लक्ष्मणेन च राघव ।
ह्रियमाणा मया दृष्टा रावणेन बलीयसा ॥१५॥
15. tvayā virahitā devī lakṣmaṇena ca rāghava ,
hriyamāṇā mayā dṛṣṭā rāvaṇena balīyasā.
15. tvayā virahitā devī lakṣmaṇena ca rāghava
hriyamāṇā mayā dṛṣṭā rāvaṇena balīyasā
15. rāghava tvayā ca lakṣmaṇena virahitā
rāvaṇena balīyasā hriyamāṇā devī mayā dṛṣṭā
15. O Rāghava, I saw the goddess (Sītā), separated from you and Lakṣmaṇa, being carried away by the powerful Rāvaṇa.
सीतामभ्यवपन्नो ऽहं रावणश्च रणे मया ।
विध्वंसितरथच्छत्रः पातितो धरणीतले ॥१६॥
16. sītāmabhyavapanno'haṃ rāvaṇaśca raṇe mayā ,
vidhvaṃsitarathacchatraḥ pātito dharaṇītale.
16. sītām abhi ava-pannaḥ aham rāvaṇaḥ ca raṇe mayā
vidhvaṃsita-ratha-cchatraḥ pātitaḥ dharaṇī-tale
16. aham sītām abhi avapannaḥ raṇe mayā ca
vidhvaṃsita-ratha-cchatraḥ rāvaṇaḥ dharaṇī-tale pātitaḥ
16. I encountered Sītā, and Rāvaṇa, his chariot and umbrella destroyed, was struck down by me on the ground in battle.
एतदस्य धनुर्भग्नमेतदस्य शरावरम् ।
अयमस्य रणे राम भग्नः सांग्रामिको रथः ॥१७॥
17. etadasya dhanurbhagnametadasya śarāvaram ,
ayamasya raṇe rāma bhagnaḥ sāṃgrāmiko rathaḥ.
17. etat asya dhanuḥ bhagnam etat asya śarāvaram |
ayam asya raṇe rāma bhagnaḥ saṃgrāmikaḥ rathaḥ
17. rāma etat asya bhagnam dhanuḥ etat asya śarāvaram
ayam asya raṇe bhagnaḥ saṃgrāmikaḥ rathaḥ
17. This is his broken bow, this is his quiver. This is his battle chariot, O Rāma, shattered in the fight.
परिश्रान्तस्य मे पक्षौ छित्त्वा खड्गेन रावणः ।
सीतामादाय वैदेहीमुत्पपात विहायसं ।
रक्षसा निहतं पूर्व्म न मां हन्तुं त्वमर्हसि ॥१८॥
18. pariśrāntasya me pakṣau chittvā khaḍgena rāvaṇaḥ ,
sītāmādāya vaidehīmutpapāta vihāyasaṃ ,
rakṣasā nihataṃ pūrvma na māṃ hantuṃ tvamarhasi.
18. pariśrāntasya me pakṣau chittvā
khaḍgena rāvaṇaḥ | sītām ādāya vaidehīm
utpapāta vihāyasam | rakṣasā nihatam
pūrvam na mām hantum tvam arhasi
18. pariśrāntasya me pakṣau khaḍgena
chittvā rāvaṇaḥ vaidehīm sītām ādāya
vihāyasam utpapāta pūrvam rakṣasā
nihatam mām tvam hantum na arhasi
18. Rāvaṇa, having cut off my two wings with a sword while I was exhausted, took Sītā, the princess of Videha, and flew up into the sky. You should not kill me, who was already slain by a demon before.
रामस्तस्य तु विज्ञाय सीतासक्तां प्रियां कथाम् ।
गृध्रराजं परिष्वज्य रुरोद सहलक्ष्मणः ॥१९॥
19. rāmastasya tu vijñāya sītāsaktāṃ priyāṃ kathām ,
gṛdhrarājaṃ pariṣvajya ruroda sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.
19. rāmaḥ tasya tu vijñāya sītā-saktām priyām kathām
| gṛdhrarājam pariṣvajya ruroda saha-lakṣmaṇaḥ
19. tu rāmaḥ tasya sītā-saktām priyām kathām vijñāya
gṛdhrarājam pariṣvajya saha-lakṣmaṇaḥ ruroda
19. Rāma, having understood his dear story related to Sītā, embraced the king of vultures and wept along with Lakṣmaṇa.
एकमेकायने दुर्गे निःश्वसन्तं कथं चन ।
समीक्ष्य दुःखितो रामः सौमित्रिमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. ekamekāyane durge niḥśvasantaṃ kathaṃ cana ,
samīkṣya duḥkhito rāmaḥ saumitrimidamabravīt.
20. ekamekayane durge niḥśvasantam katham cana
samīkṣya duḥkhitaḥ rāmaḥ saumitrim idam abravīt
20. duḥkhitaḥ rāmaḥ ekamekayane durge katham cana
niḥśvasantam samīkṣya idam saumitrim abravīt
20. Distressed, Rama, upon seeing Lakshmana sighing somehow in that difficult, solitary refuge, said this to him.
राज्याद्भ्रंशो वने वासः सीता नष्टा हतो द्विजः ।
ईदृशीयं ममालक्ष्मीर्निर्दहेदपि पावकम् ॥२१॥
21. rājyādbhraṃśo vane vāsaḥ sītā naṣṭā hato dvijaḥ ,
īdṛśīyaṃ mamālakṣmīrnirdahedapi pāvakam.
21. rājyāt bhraṃśaḥ vane vāsaḥ sītā naṣṭā hataḥ dvijaḥ
īdṛśī iyam mama alakṣmīḥ nirdahet api pāvakam
21. rājyāt bhraṃśaḥ,
vane vāsaḥ,
sītā naṣṭā,
dvijaḥ hataḥ,
iyam mama īdṛśī alakṣmīḥ pāvakam api nirdahet.
21. My loss of kingdom, residence in the forest, Sita being lost, and a Brahmin (dvija) being killed – such is this misfortune (alakṣmī) of mine that it would incinerate even fire itself.
संपूर्णमपि चेदद्य प्रतरेयं महोदधिम् ।
सो ऽपि नूनं ममालक्ष्म्या विशुष्येत् सरितां पतिः ॥२२॥
22. saṃpūrṇamapi cedadya pratareyaṃ mahodadhim ,
so'pi nūnaṃ mamālakṣmyā viśuṣyet saritāṃ patiḥ.
22. saṃpūrṇam api cet adya pratareyam mahodadhim saḥ
api nūnam mama alakṣmyā viśuṣyet saritām patiḥ
22. adya saṃpūrṇam mahodadhim pratareyam cet,
saḥ api saritām patiḥ nūnam mama alakṣmyā viśuṣyet.
22. Even if I were to cross the vast, full ocean today, that very ocean, the lord of rivers, would surely dry up because of my misfortune (alakṣmī).
नास्त्यभाग्यतरो लोके मत्तो ऽस्मिन् सचराचरे ।
येनेयं महती प्राप्ता मया व्यसनवागुरा ॥२३॥
23. nāstyabhāgyataro loke matto'smin sacarācare ,
yeneyaṃ mahatī prāptā mayā vyasanavāgurā.
23. na asti abhāgyataraḥ loke mattaḥ asmin sacarācare
yena iyam mahatī prāptā mayā vyasanavāgurā
23. asmin sacarācare loke mattaḥ abhāgyataraḥ na asti,
yena mayā iyam mahatī vyasanavāgurā prāptā.
23. There is no one more unfortunate than me in this entire world, comprising all animate and inanimate beings, by whom such a great snare of calamity (vyasanavāgurā) has been encountered.
अयं पितृवयस्यो मे गृध्रराजो जरान्वितः ।
शेते विनिहतो भूमौ मम भाग्यविपर्ययात् ॥२४॥
24. ayaṃ pitṛvayasyo me gṛdhrarājo jarānvitaḥ ,
śete vinihato bhūmau mama bhāgyaviparyayāt.
24. ayam pitṛvayasyaḥ me gṛdhrarājaḥ jarānvitaḥ
śete vinihataḥ bhūmau mama bhāgyaviparyayāt
24. ayam me pitṛvayasyaḥ jarānvitaḥ gṛdhrarājaḥ mama bhāgyaviparyayāt bhūmau vinihataḥ śete.
24. This king of vultures, my father's old friend, afflicted by old age, lies slain on the ground due to my adverse fate.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा बहुशो राघवः सहलक्ष्मणः ।
जटायुषं च पस्पर्श पितृस्नेहं निदर्शयन् ॥२५॥
25. ityevamuktvā bahuśo rāghavaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ,
jaṭāyuṣaṃ ca pasparśa pitṛsnehaṃ nidarśayan.
25. iti evam uktvā bahuśaḥ rāghavaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ
jaṭāyuṣam ca pasparśa pitṛsneham nidarśayan
25. rāghavaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ iti evam bahuśaḥ uktvā ca pitṛsneham nidarśayan jaṭāyuṣam pasparśa.
25. Having thus spoken repeatedly, Rama, together with Lakshmana, touched Jatayu, showing fatherly affection.
निकृत्तपक्षं रुधिरावसिक्तं तं गृध्रराजं परिरभ्य रामः ।
क्व मैथिलि प्राणसमा ममेति विमुच्य वाचं निपपात भूमौ ॥२६॥
26. nikṛttapakṣaṃ rudhirāvasiktaṃ taṃ gṛdhrarājaṃ parirabhya rāmaḥ ,
kva maithili prāṇasamā mameti vimucya vācaṃ nipapāta bhūmau.
26. nikṛttapakṣam rudhirāvasiktam
tam gṛdhrarājam parirabhya rāmaḥ
kva maithili prāṇasamā mama iti
vimucya vācam nipapāta bhūmau
26. rāmaḥ nikṛttapakṣam rudhirāvasiktam tam gṛdhrarājam parirabhya 'kva mama prāṇasamā maithili' iti vācam vimucya bhūmau nipapāta.
26. Embracing that king of vultures, whose wings were severed and who was drenched in blood, Rama, uttering the words, 'Where is Maithili, my very life?', fell to the ground.
