ततस्तदमृतास्वादं गृध्रराजेन भाषितम् ।
निशम्य वदतो हृष्टास्ते वचः प्लवगर्षभाः ॥१॥
1. tatastadamṛtāsvādaṃ gṛdhrarājena bhāṣitam ,
niśamya vadato hṛṣṭāste vacaḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ.

1. Then, upon hearing those nectar-like words uttered by the king of vultures, those excellent monkeys became joyful while he spoke.
जाम्बवान् वै हरिश्रेष्ठः सह सर्वैः प्लवंगमैः ।
भूतलात् सहसोत्थाय गृध्रराजानमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. jāmbavān vai hariśreṣṭhaḥ saha sarvaiḥ plavaṃgamaiḥ ,
bhūtalāt sahasotthāya gṛdhrarājānamabravīt.

2. Indeed, Jāmbavān, the foremost among the monkey-chiefs, suddenly rose from the ground along with all the other monkeys and spoke to the king of vultures.
क्व सीता केन वा दृष्टा को वा हरति मैथिलीम् ।
तदाख्यातु भवान् सर्वं गतिर्भव वनौकसाम् ॥३॥
3. kva sītā kena vā dṛṣṭā ko vā harati maithilīm ,
tadākhyātu bhavān sarvaṃ gatirbhava vanaukasām.

tat ākhyātu bhavān sarvam gatiḥ bhava vanaukasām

3. Where is Sītā? Or by whom was she seen? Or who abducted Maithilī? Please, sir, explain all of that. Be the refuge for us forest-dwellers.
को दाशरथिबाणानां वज्रवेगनिपातिनाम् ।
स्वयं लक्ष्मणमुक्तानां न चिन्तयति विक्रमम् ॥४॥
4. ko dāśarathibāṇānāṃ vajraveganipātinām ,
svayaṃ lakṣmaṇamuktānāṃ na cintayati vikramam.

4. Who would not consider the valor of the arrows of Rāma (Dāśarathi), which fall with the speed of a thunderbolt and are personally released by Lakṣmaṇa?
स हरीन्प्रीतिसंयुक्तान् सीता श्रुतिसमाहितान् ।
पुनराश्वासयन्प्रीत इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. sa harīnprītisaṃyuktān sītā śrutisamāhitān ,
punarāśvāsayanprīta idaṃ vacanamabravīt.

5. He, filled with joy, again reassured the monkeys, who were eager for news of Sītā and intently listening, and spoke these words.
श्रूयतामिह वैदेह्या यथा मे हरणं श्रुतम् ।
येन चापि ममाख्यातं यत्र चायतलोचना ॥६॥
6. śrūyatāmiha vaidehyā yathā me haraṇaṃ śrutam ,
yena cāpi mamākhyātaṃ yatra cāyatalocanā.

अहमस्मिन् गिरौ दुर्गे बहुयोजनमायते ।
चिरान्निपतितो वृद्धः क्षीणप्राणपराक्रमः ॥७॥
7. ahamasmin girau durge bahuyojanamāyate ,
cirānnipatito vṛddhaḥ kṣīṇaprāṇaparākramaḥ.

cirāt nipatitaḥ vṛddhaḥ kṣīṇaprāṇaparākramaḥ

7. I am an old one, fallen here a long time ago on this vast, inaccessible mountain, with my vital energy and strength diminished.
तं मामेवंगतं पुत्रः सुपार्श्वो नाम नामतः ।
आहारेण यथाकालं बिभर्ति पततां वरः ॥८॥
8. taṃ māmevaṃgataṃ putraḥ supārśvo nāma nāmataḥ ,
āhāreṇa yathākālaṃ bibharti patatāṃ varaḥ.
8. tam mām evaṃgatam putraḥ supārśvaḥ nāma nāmataḥ
āhāreṇa yathākālam bibharti patatām varaḥ

8. My son, Suparśva by name, the best among winged creatures, sustains me, who am in this condition, with food at the appropriate time.
तीक्ष्णकामास्तु गन्धर्वास्तीक्ष्णकोपा भुजंगमाः ।
मृगाणां तु भयं तीक्ष्णं ततस्तीक्ष्णक्षुधा वयम् ॥९॥
9. tīkṣṇakāmāstu gandharvāstīkṣṇakopā bhujaṃgamāḥ ,
mṛgāṇāṃ tu bhayaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ tatastīkṣṇakṣudhā vayam.
9. tīkṣṇakāmāḥ tu gandharvāḥ tīkṣṇakopāḥ bhujaṅgamāḥ
mṛgāṇām tu bhayam tīkṣṇam tataḥ tīkṣṇakṣudhāḥ vayam

9. Indeed, Gandharvas have intense desires, and serpents possess fierce anger. Among deer, fear is intense. Therefore, we (birds) have intense hunger.
स कदा चित् क्षुधार्तस्य मम चाहारकाङ्क्षिणः ।
गतसूर्यो ऽहनि प्राप्तो मम पुत्रो ह्यनामिषः ॥१०॥
10. sa kadā cit kṣudhārtasya mama cāhārakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ,
gatasūryo'hani prāpto mama putro hyanāmiṣaḥ.
10. sa kadā cit kṣudhārtasya mama ca āhārakaṅkṣiṇaḥ
gatasūryaḥ ahani prāptaḥ mama putraḥ hi anāmiṣaḥ

10. One day, while I was tormented by hunger and longing for food, my son arrived at sunset, but indeed without any prey.
स मया वृद्धभावाच्च कोपाच्च परिभर्त्सितः ।
क्षुत्पिपासा परीतेन कुमारः पततां वरः ॥११॥
11. sa mayā vṛddhabhāvācca kopācca paribhartsitaḥ ,
kṣutpipāsā parītena kumāraḥ patatāṃ varaḥ.
11. sa mayā vṛddhabhāvāt ca kopāt ca paribhartsitaḥ
kṣutpipāsāparītena kumāraḥ patatām varaḥ
11. kṣutpipāsāparītena mayā vṛddhabhāvāt ca kopāt

11. That son, the best among flying creatures, was rebuked by me - who was overwhelmed by hunger and thirst - due to both my old age and anger.
स ममाहारसंरोधात् पीडितः प्रीतिवर्धनः ।
अनुमान्य यथातत्त्वमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. sa mamāhārasaṃrodhāt pīḍitaḥ prītivardhanaḥ ,
anumānya yathātattvamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
12. sa mama āhāraṃrodhāt pīḍitaḥ prītivardhanaḥ
anumānya yathātattvam idam vacanam abravīt
12. mama āhāraṃrodhāt pīḍitaḥ prītivardhanaḥ sa

12. He, the one who brings joy, distressed by the lack of food for me, respectfully acknowledged (my words) and then spoke these words befitting the truth.
अहं तात यथाकालमामिषार्थी खमाप्लुतः ।
महेन्द्रस्य गिरेर्द्वारमावृत्य च समास्थितः ॥१३॥
13. ahaṃ tāta yathākālamāmiṣārthī khamāplutaḥ ,
mahendrasya girerdvāramāvṛtya ca samāsthitaḥ.
13. aham tāta yathākālam āmiṣārthī kham āplutaḥ
mahendrasya gireḥ dvāram āvṛtya ca samāsthitaḥ
13. tāta! aham yathākālam āmiṣārthī kham āplutaḥ
ca mahendrasya gireḥ dvāram āvṛtya samāsthitaḥ
13. Father, I, seeking prey, ascended into the sky at the proper time, and having covered the pass of Mahendra mountain, I took up my position.
तत्र सत्त्वसहस्राणां सागरान्तरचारिणाम् ।
पन्थानमेको ऽध्यवसं संनिरोद्धुमवाङ्मुखः ॥१४॥
14. tatra sattvasahasrāṇāṃ sāgarāntaracāriṇām ,
panthānameko'dhyavasaṃ saṃniroddhumavāṅmukhaḥ.
14. tatra sattvasahasrāṇām sāgarāntaracāriṇām
panthānam ekaḥ adhyavasaṃ saṃniroddhum avāṅmukhaḥ
14. ekaḥ avāṅmukhaḥ tatra sāgarāntaracāriṇām
sattvasahasrāṇām panthānam saṃniroddhum adhyavasaṃ
14. There, with my face turned downwards, I alone resolved to obstruct the path of thousands of creatures (sattva) that traverse the ocean.
तत्र कश्चिन्मया दृष्टः सूर्योदयसमप्रभाम् ।
स्त्रियमादाय गच्छन् वै भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमः ॥१५॥
15. tatra kaścinmayā dṛṣṭaḥ sūryodayasamaprabhām ,
striyamādāya gacchan vai bhinnāñjanacayopamaḥ.
15. tatra kaścit mayā dṛṣṭaḥ sūryodayasamaprabhām
striyam ādāya gacchan vai bhinnāñjanacayopamaḥ
15. tatra mayā kaścit bhinnāñjanacayopamaḥ
sūryodayasamaprabhām striyam ādāya gacchan dṛṣṭaḥ
15. There, I saw someone carrying a woman whose radiance was like the rising sun, while he himself resembled a mass of crushed collyrium.
सो ऽहमभ्यवहारार्थी तौ दृष्ट्वा कृतनिश्चयः ।
तेन साम्ना विनीतेन पन्थानमभियाचितः ॥१६॥
16. so'hamabhyavahārārthī tau dṛṣṭvā kṛtaniścayaḥ ,
tena sāmnā vinītena panthānamabhiyācitaḥ.
16. saḥ aham abhyavahārārthī tau dṛṣṭvā kṛtaniścayaḥ
tena sāmnā vinītena panthānam abhiyācitaḥ
16. saḥ aham abhyavahārārthī tau dṛṣṭvā kṛtaniścayaḥ
tena vinītena sāmnā panthānam abhiyācitaḥ
16. I, being desirous of food, saw those two and formed a resolution. Then, I was humbly requested by him with gentle words for passage on the path.
न हि सामोपपन्नानां प्रहर्ता विद्यते क्व चित् ।
नीचेष्वपि जनः कश्चित् किमङ्ग बत मद्विधः ॥१७॥
17. na hi sāmopapannānāṃ prahartā vidyate kva cit ,
nīceṣvapi janaḥ kaścit kimaṅga bata madvidhaḥ.
17. na hi sāma-upapannānām prahartā vidyate kva cit
nīceṣu api janaḥ kaścit kim aṅga bata madvidhaḥ
17. hi sāma-upapannānām prahartā kva cit na vidyate nīceṣu api kaścit janaḥ [na prahartā bhavati],
kim aṅga bata madvidhaḥ [na prahartā bhaviṣyati iti]
17. Indeed, an assailant is never found anywhere for those who approach with gentle words. If this is true even among lowly people, then how much more so for someone like me?
स यातस्तेजसा व्योम संक्षिपन्निव वेगतः ।
अथाहं खे चरैर्भूतैरभिगम्य सभाजितः ॥१८॥
18. sa yātastejasā vyoma saṃkṣipanniva vegataḥ ,
athāhaṃ khe carairbhūtairabhigamya sabhājitaḥ.
18. saḥ yātaḥ tejasā vyoma saṃkṣipan iva vegataḥ atha
aham khe caraiḥ bhūtaiḥ abhigamya sabhājitaḥ
18. He soared into the sky with great splendor, as if compressing the vastness with his speed. Then, having been approached by celestial beings, I was honored.
दिष्ट्या जीवसि तातेति अब्रुवन्मां महर्षयः ।
कथं चित् सकलत्रो ऽसौ गतस्ते स्वस्त्यसंशयम् ॥१९॥
19. diṣṭyā jīvasi tāteti abruvanmāṃ maharṣayaḥ ,
kathaṃ cit sakalatro'sau gataste svastyasaṃśayam.
19. diṣṭyā jīvasi tāta iti abruvan mām maharṣayaḥ kathaṃ
cit sa-kalatraḥ asau gataḥ te svasti asaṃśayam
19. The great sages said to me, 'Fortunately, dear child, you are alive! That one (Rāvaṇa), accompanied by the wife (Sītā), has undoubtedly gone safely, somehow (having evaded you).'
एवमुक्तस्ततो ऽहं तैः सिद्धैः परमशोभनैः ।
स च मे रावणो राजा रक्षसां प्रतिवेदितः ॥२०॥
20. evamuktastato'haṃ taiḥ siddhaiḥ paramaśobhanaiḥ ,
sa ca me rāvaṇo rājā rakṣasāṃ prativeditaḥ.
20. evam uktaḥ tataḥ aham taiḥ siddhaiḥ parama-śobhanaiḥ
saḥ ca me rāvaṇaḥ rājā rakṣasām prativeditaḥ
20. Having been thus addressed by those supremely radiant siddhas, I was then informed about that King Rāvaṇa, the ruler of the rākṣasas.
हरन्दाशरथेर्भार्यां रामस्य जनकात्मजाम् ।
भ्रष्टाभरणकौशेयां शोकवेगपराजिताम् ॥२१॥
21. harandāśaratherbhāryāṃ rāmasya janakātmajām ,
bhraṣṭābharaṇakauśeyāṃ śokavegaparājitām.
21. haran dāśaratheḥ bhāryām rāmasya janakātmajām
bhraṣṭa-ābharaṇa-kauśeyām śoka-vega-parājitām
21. (He was described as) carrying away the wife of Rāma, son of Daśaratha, Janaka's daughter (Sītā), whose ornaments and silken garments had fallen, and who was utterly overcome by the surge of grief.
रामलक्ष्मणयोर्नाम क्रोशन्तीं मुक्तमूर्धजाम् ।
एष कालात्ययस्तावदिति वाक्यविदां वरः ॥२२॥
22. rāmalakṣmaṇayornāma krośantīṃ muktamūrdhajām ,
eṣa kālātyayastāvaditi vākyavidāṃ varaḥ.
22. rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ nāma krośantīm muktamūrdhajām
eṣaḥ kālātyayaḥ tāvat iti vākyavidām varaḥ
22. muktamūrdhajām rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ nāma krośantīm
eṣaḥ kālātyayaḥ tāvat iti vākyavidām varaḥ
22. Observing her with unbound hair, crying out the names of Rama and Lakshmana, the best among those eloquent in speech declared, 'This indeed signifies a critical delay.'
एतमर्थं समग्रं मे सुपार्श्वः प्रत्यवेदयत् ।
तच्छ्रुत्वापि हि मे बुद्धिर्नासीत् का चित् पराक्रमे ॥२३॥
23. etamarthaṃ samagraṃ me supārśvaḥ pratyavedayat ,
tacchrutvāpi hi me buddhirnāsīt kā cit parākrame.
23. etam artham samagram me supārśvaḥ pratyavedayat tat
śrutvā api hi me buddhiḥ na āsīt kā cit parākrame
23. supārśvaḥ me etam samagram artham pratyavedayat tat
śrutvā api hi me buddhiḥ parākrame kā cit na āsīt
23. Suparshva reported this entire matter to me. However, even after hearing that, my mind (buddhi) was not at all inclined towards any act of valor.
अपक्षो हि कथं पक्षी कर्म किं चिदुपक्रमेत् ।
यत्तु शक्यं मया कर्तुं वाग्बुद्धिगुणवर्तिना ॥२४॥
24. apakṣo hi kathaṃ pakṣī karma kiṃ cidupakramet ,
yattu śakyaṃ mayā kartuṃ vāgbuddhiguṇavartinā.
24. apakṣaḥ hi katham pakṣī karma kim cit upakramet
yat tu śakyam mayā kartum vāgbuddiguṇavartinā
24. apakṣaḥ hi katham pakṣī kim cit karma upakramet
yat tu mayā vāgbuddiguṇavartinā kartum śakyam
24. Indeed, how can a wingless bird undertake any action (karma)? But what can be done by me, who is endowed with the qualities of speech and intellect (buddhi)...
श्रूयतां तत् प्रवक्ष्यामि भवतां पौरुषाश्रयम् ।
वाङ्मतिभ्यां हि सार्वेषां करिष्यामि प्रियं हि वः ।
यद्धि दाशरथेः कार्यं मम तन्नात्र संशयः ॥२५॥
25. śrūyatāṃ tat pravakṣyāmi bhavatāṃ pauruṣāśrayam ,
vāṅmatibhyāṃ hi sārveṣāṃ kariṣyāmi priyaṃ hi vaḥ ,
yaddhi dāśaratheḥ kāryaṃ mama tannātra saṃśayaḥ.
25. śrūyatām tat pravakṣyāmi bhavatām
pauruṣāśrayam vāgmatibhyām hi sarveṣām
kariṣyāmi priyam hi vaḥ yat hi
dāśaratheḥ kāryam mama tat na atra saṃśayaḥ
25. tat śrūyatām bhavatām pauruṣāśrayam
pravakṣyāmi vāgmatibhyām hi sarveṣām
vaḥ priyam hi kariṣyāmi yat hi
dāśaratheḥ kāryam tat mama na atra saṃśayaḥ
25. Listen, I shall declare that which relies upon your prowess. Indeed, with both speech and intellect, I will accomplish what is dear to all of you. For the mission (kārya) of Dasharatha's son (Rama) is my own; there is no doubt about this.
ते भवन्तो मतिश्रेष्ठा बलवन्तो मनस्विनः ।
सहिताः कपिराजेन देवैरपि दुरासदाः ॥२६॥
26. te bhavanto matiśreṣṭhā balavanto manasvinaḥ ,
sahitāḥ kapirājena devairapi durāsadāḥ.
26. te bhavantaḥ matiśreṣṭhāḥ balavantaḥ manasvinaḥ
sahitāḥ kapirājena devaiḥ api durāsadāḥ
26. bhavantaḥ te matiśreṣṭhāḥ balavantaḥ manasvinaḥ
kapirājena sahitāḥ api devaiḥ durāsadāḥ
26. You are foremost in wisdom, mighty, and high-minded. Together with the king of monkeys (Sugrīva), you are difficult to overpower even by the gods.
रामलक्ष्मणबाणाश्च निशिताः कङ्कपत्रिणः ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां पर्याप्तास्त्राणनिग्रहे ॥२७॥
27. rāmalakṣmaṇabāṇāśca niśitāḥ kaṅkapatriṇaḥ ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ paryāptāstrāṇanigrahe.
27. rāmalakṣmaṇabāṇāḥ ca niśitāḥ kaṅkapatriṇaḥ
trayāṇām api lokānām paryāptāḥ trāṇanigrahe
27. rāmalakṣmaṇabāṇāḥ ca niśitāḥ kaṅkapatriṇaḥ
api trayāṇām lokānām trāṇanigrahe paryāptāḥ
27. The keen arrows of Rama and Lakshmana, feathered with heron plumes, are sufficient for the protection and destruction of even all three worlds.
कामं खलु दशग्रीवस्तेजोबलसमन्वितः ।
भवतां तु समर्थानां न किं चिदपि दुष्करम् ॥२८॥
28. kāmaṃ khalu daśagrīvastejobalasamanvitaḥ ,
bhavatāṃ tu samarthānāṃ na kiṃ cidapi duṣkaram.
28. kāmam khalu daśagrīvaḥ tejobalasamanvitaḥ
bhavatām tu samarthānām na kim cit api duṣkaram
28. kāmam khalu daśagrīvaḥ tejobalasamanvitaḥ (asti) tu
bhavatām samarthānām kim cit api duṣkaram na (asti)
28. Ravana (Daśagrīva) is indeed endowed with splendor and strength. But for you, who are capable, nothing at all is difficult.
तदलं कालसंगेन क्रियतां बुद्धिनिश्चयः ।
न हि कर्मसु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवद्विधाः ॥२९॥
29. tadalaṃ kālasaṃgena kriyatāṃ buddhiniścayaḥ ,
na hi karmasu sajjante buddhimanto bhavadvidhāḥ.
29. tat alam kālasaṅgena kriyatām buddhiniścayaḥ na
hi karmasu sajjante buddhimantaḥ bhavadvidhāḥ
29. tat kālasaṅgena alam (astu) buddhiniścayaḥ kriyatām
hi bhavadvidhāḥ buddhimantaḥ karmasu na sajjante
29. Therefore, stop wasting time! Let a firm decision be made. Indeed, intelligent ones like you do not delay in their actions.
