1. Having heard that story of Rāma from the best of monkeys, Vaidehī spoke these comforting words with a sweet voice.
क्व ते रामेण संसर्गः कथं जानासि लक्ष्मणम् ।
वानराणां नराणां च कथमासीत् समागमः ॥२॥
2. kva te rāmeṇa saṃsargaḥ kathaṃ jānāsi lakṣmaṇam ,
vānarāṇāṃ narāṇāṃ ca kathamāsīt samāgamaḥ.

2. Where did you (Hanumān) make contact with Rāma? How do you know Lakṣmaṇa? And how did the meeting between monkeys and men take place?
यानि रामस्य लिङ्गानि लक्ष्मणस्य च वानर ।
तानि भूयः समाचक्ष्व न मां शोकः समाविशेत् ॥३॥
3. yāni rāmasya liṅgāni lakṣmaṇasya ca vānara ,
tāni bhūyaḥ samācakṣva na māṃ śokaḥ samāviśet.

3. O monkey, describe again the characteristics of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, so that sorrow may not overcome me.
कीदृशं तस्य संस्थानं रूपं रामस्य कीदृशम् ।
कथमूरू कथं बाहू लक्ष्मणस्य च शंस मे ॥४॥
4. kīdṛśaṃ tasya saṃsthānaṃ rūpaṃ rāmasya kīdṛśam ,
kathamūrū kathaṃ bāhū lakṣmaṇasya ca śaṃsa me.

4. What is his (Rāma's) physique like? What is Rāma's form like? How are his thighs, and how are his arms? And describe Lakṣmaṇa to me.
एवमुक्तस्तु वैदेह्या हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ।
ततो रामं यथातत्त्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे ॥५॥
5. evamuktastu vaidehyā hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ ,
tato rāmaṃ yathātattvamākhyātumupacakrame.

5. Addressed in this way by Vaidehi, Hanuman, the son of Vayu, then began to describe Rama as he truly was.
जानन्ती बत दिष्ट्या मां वैदेहि परिपृच्छसि ।
भर्तुः कमलपत्राक्षि संख्यानं लक्ष्मणस्य च ॥६॥
6. jānantī bata diṣṭyā māṃ vaidehi paripṛcchasi ,
bhartuḥ kamalapatrākṣi saṃkhyānaṃ lakṣmaṇasya ca.

6. O Vaidehi, O lotus-eyed one, it is fortunate indeed that you, knowing (my connection to them), ask me for a description of your husband and of Lakshmana.
यानि रामस्य चिह्नानि लक्ष्मणस्य च यानि वै ।
लक्षितानि विशालाक्षि वदतः शृणु तानि मे ॥७॥
7. yāni rāmasya cihnāni lakṣmaṇasya ca yāni vai ,

7. O broad-eyed one, listen to me as I describe those distinguishing marks of Rama and Lakshmana that I have observed.
रामः कमलपत्राक्षः सर्वभूतमनोहरः ।
रूपदाक्षिण्यसंपन्नः प्रसूतो जनकात्मजे ॥८॥
8. rāmaḥ kamalapatrākṣaḥ sarvabhūtamanoharaḥ ,
rūpadākṣiṇyasaṃpannaḥ prasūto janakātmaje.

8. O daughter of Janaka, Rama possesses eyes like lotus petals, captivates the minds of all beings, is endowed with beauty and skill, and is nobly born.
तेजसादित्यसंकाशः क्षमया पृथिवीसमः ।
बृहस्पतिसमो बुद्ध्या यशसा वासवोपमः ॥९॥
9. tejasādityasaṃkāśaḥ kṣamayā pṛthivīsamaḥ ,
bṛhaspatisamo buddhyā yaśasā vāsavopamaḥ.
9. tejasā ādityasaṃkāśaḥ kṣamayā pṛthivīsamaḥ
bṛhaspatisamaḥ buddhyā yaśasā vāsavopamaḥ
9. He is like the sun in splendor, like the earth in patience, like Bṛhaspati in intellect, and like Vāsava in glory.
रक्षिता जीवलोकस्य स्वजनस्य च रक्षिता ।
रक्षिता स्वस्य वृत्तस्य धर्मस्य च परंतपः ॥१०॥
10. rakṣitā jīvalokasya svajanasya ca rakṣitā ,
rakṣitā svasya vṛttasya dharmasya ca paraṃtapaḥ.

10. He is the protector of all living beings and his own kinsmen. He is also the protector of his own conduct and of the (natural law) (dharma), O tormentor of enemies.
रामो भामिनि लोकस्य चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य रक्षिता ।
मर्यादानां च लोकस्य कर्ता कारयिता च सः ॥११॥
11. rāmo bhāmini lokasya cāturvarṇyasya rakṣitā ,
maryādānāṃ ca lokasya kartā kārayitā ca saḥ.

maryādānām ca lokasya kartā kārayitā ca saḥ
11. O radiant lady, Rama is the protector of the people and of the four social orders (varṇa). He is also the one who establishes and causes to be observed the conventions of the world.
अर्चिष्मानर्चितो ऽत्यर्थं ब्रह्मचर्यव्रते स्थितः ।
साधूनामुपकारज्ञः प्रचारज्ञश्च कर्मणाम् ॥१२॥
12. arciṣmānarcito'tyarthaṃ brahmacaryavrate sthitaḥ ,
sādhūnāmupakārajñaḥ pracārajñaśca karmaṇām.
12. arciṣmān arcitaḥ atyartham brahmacaryavrate sthitaḥ
sādhūnām upakārajñaḥ pracārajñaḥ ca karmaṇām
12. Glorious and greatly honored, steadfast in his vow of celibacy (brahmacarya), he understands how to benefit the virtuous and knows the proper methods of actions (karma).
राजविद्याविनीतश्च ब्राह्मणानामुपासिता ।
श्रुतवाञ् शीलसंपन्नो विनीतश्च परंतपः ॥१३॥
13. rājavidyāvinītaśca brāhmaṇānāmupāsitā ,
śrutavāñ śīlasaṃpanno vinītaśca paraṃtapaḥ.

13. He is well-versed in statecraft and a devoted attendant to the brahmins. He is learned, endowed with excellent character, humble, and a tormentor of foes.
यजुर्वेदविनीतश्च वेदविद्भिः सुपूजितः ।
धनुर्वेदे च वेदे च वेदाङ्गेषु च निष्ठितः ॥१४॥
14. yajurvedavinītaśca vedavidbhiḥ supūjitaḥ ,
dhanurvede ca vede ca vedāṅgeṣu ca niṣṭhitaḥ.

14. He is well-trained in the Yajurveda and highly honored by those who are conversant with the Vedas. He is also proficient in the science of archery (Dhanurveda), in the (other) Vedas, and in the subsidiary disciplines of the Vedas (Vedangas).
विपुलांसो महाबाहुः कम्बुग्रीवः शुभाननः ।
गूढजत्रुः सुताम्राक्षो रामो देवि जनैः श्रुतः ॥१५॥
15. vipulāṃso mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvaḥ śubhānanaḥ ,
gūḍhajatruḥ sutāmrākṣo rāmo devi janaiḥ śrutaḥ.

15. O goddess, Rama is known by people to be broad-shouldered, mighty-armed, with a neck like a conch-shell, a beautiful face, concealed collarbones, and lovely coppery eyes.
दुन्दुभिस्वननिर्घोषः स्निग्धवर्णः प्रतापवान् ।
समः समविभक्ताङ्गो वर्णं श्यामं समाश्रितः ॥१६॥
16. dundubhisvananirghoṣaḥ snigdhavarṇaḥ pratāpavān ,
samaḥ samavibhaktāṅgo varṇaṃ śyāmaṃ samāśritaḥ.

16. He has a voice resounding like a war-drum, a smooth complexion, and is glorious. He is well-proportioned, with evenly distributed limbs, and possesses a dark complexion.
त्रिस्थिरस्त्रिप्रलम्बश्च त्रिसमस्त्रिषु चोन्नतः ।
त्रिवलीवांस्त्र्यवणतश्चतुर्व्यङ्गस्त्रिशीर्षवान् ॥१७॥
17. tristhirastripralambaśca trisamastriṣu connataḥ ,
trivalīvāṃstryavaṇataścaturvyaṅgastriśīrṣavān.

17. He is firm in three places, long in three, symmetrical in three, and elevated in three. He has three auspicious bodily folds, three depressed features, four well-proportioned limbs, and a head with three distinct sections.
चतुष्कलश्चतुर्लेखश्चतुष्किष्कुश्चतुःसमः ।
चतुर्दशसमद्वन्द्वश्चतुर्दष्टश्चतुर्गतिः ॥१८॥
18. catuṣkalaścaturlekhaścatuṣkiṣkuścatuḥsamaḥ ,
caturdaśasamadvandvaścaturdaṣṭaścaturgatiḥ.

18. He possesses four auspicious parts, four auspicious lines, is proportioned to four cubits, and is symmetrical in four ways. He has fourteen equally paired features, four perfect teeth, and four auspicious gaits.
महौष्ठहनुनासश्च पञ्चस्निग्धो ऽष्टवंशवान् ।
दशपद्मो दशबृहत्त्रिभिर्व्याप्तो द्विशुक्लवान् ।
षडुन्नतो नवतनुस्त्रिभिर्व्याप्नोति राघवः ॥१९॥
19. mahauṣṭhahanunāsaśca pañcasnigdho'ṣṭavaṃśavān ,
daśapadmo daśabṛhattribhirvyāpto dviśuklavān ,
ṣaḍunnato navatanustribhirvyāpnoti rāghavaḥ.

aṣṭavaṃśavān daśapadmaḥ daśabṛhat
tribhiḥ vyāptaḥ dviśuklavān ṣaḍunnataḥ
navatanuḥ tribhiḥ vyāpnoti rāghavaḥ
19. He possesses large lips, chin, and nose, and five smooth parts. He has eight auspicious joints, ten lotus-like features, and ten large features. He is deep in three aspects and has two white features. Rāma (rāghava) is six-elevated and nine-slender, and is truly pervaded by three (virtues).
सत्यधर्मपरः श्रीमान् संग्रहानुग्रहे रतः ।
देशकालविभागज्ञः सर्वलोकप्रियंवदः ॥२०॥
20. satyadharmaparaḥ śrīmān saṃgrahānugrahe rataḥ ,
deśakālavibhāgajñaḥ sarvalokapriyaṃvadaḥ.

20. He is devoted to truth and natural law (dharma), glorious, and engaged in providing protection and bestowing grace. He is knowledgeable about the distinctions of place and time, and speaks pleasantly to all people.
भ्राता च तस्य द्वैमात्रः सौमित्रिरपराजितः ।
अनुरागेण रूपेण गुणैश्चैव तथाविधः ॥२१॥
21. bhrātā ca tasya dvaimātraḥ saumitriraparājitaḥ ,
anurāgeṇa rūpeṇa guṇaiścaiva tathāvidhaḥ.

21. And his half-brother, Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), the unconquered, was likewise similar in devotion, appearance, and virtues.
त्वामेव मार्गमाणो तौ विचरन्तौ वसुंधराम् ।
ददर्शतुर्मृगपतिं पूर्वजेनावरोपितम् ॥२२॥
22. tvāmeva mārgamāṇo tau vicarantau vasuṃdharām ,
dadarśaturmṛgapatiṃ pūrvajenāvaropitam.

22. Wandering over the earth, searching only for you, those two saw the lord of monkeys (Sugriva), who had been deposed by his elder brother.
ऋश्यमूकस्य पृष्ठे तु बहुपादपसंकुले ।
भ्रातुर्भार्यार्तमासीनं सुग्रीवं प्रियदर्शनम् ॥२३॥
23. ṛśyamūkasya pṛṣṭhe tu bahupādapasaṃkule ,
bhrāturbhāryārtamāsīnaṃ sugrīvaṃ priyadarśanam.

23. On the tree-dense summit of R̥ṣyamūka mountain, they saw Sugriva, of pleasing appearance, seated and distressed because of his brother's wife.
वयं तु हरिराजं तं सुग्रीवं सत्यसंगरम् ।
परिचर्यामहे राज्यात् पूर्वजेनावरोपितम् ॥२४॥
24. vayaṃ tu harirājaṃ taṃ sugrīvaṃ satyasaṃgaram ,
paricaryāmahe rājyāt pūrvajenāvaropitam.

24. Indeed, we serve that Sugriva, the king of monkeys, who is true to his word and who was deposed from his kingdom by his elder brother.
ततस्तौ चीरवसनौ धनुःप्रवरपाणिनौ ।
ऋश्यमूकस्य शैलस्य रम्यं देशमुपागतौ ॥२५॥
25. tatastau cīravasanau dhanuḥpravarapāṇinau ,
ṛśyamūkasya śailasya ramyaṃ deśamupāgatau.

25. Then, those two, dressed in bark garments and carrying excellent bows in their hands, arrived at a charming region of the Rishyamuka mountain.
स तौ दृष्ट्वा नरव्याघ्रौ धन्विनौ वानरर्षभः ।
अभिप्लुतो गिरेस्तस्य शिखरं भयमोहितः ॥२६॥
26. sa tau dṛṣṭvā naravyāghrau dhanvinau vānararṣabhaḥ ,
abhipluto girestasya śikharaṃ bhayamohitaḥ.
26. saḥ tau dṛṣṭvā naravyāghrau dhanvinau vānararṣabhaḥ
abhiplutaḥ gireḥ tasya śikharam bhayamohitaḥ

26. Having seen those two heroic men carrying bows, the chief of monkeys (vānararṣabhaḥ), overwhelmed by fear, leapt to the peak of that mountain.
ततः स शिखरे तस्मिन् वानरेन्द्रो व्यवस्थितः ।
तयोः समीपं मामेव प्रेषयामास सत्वरः ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ sa śikhare tasmin vānarendro vyavasthitaḥ ,
tayoḥ samīpaṃ māmeva preṣayāmāsa satvaraḥ.
27. tataḥ saḥ śikhare tasmin vānanarendraḥ vyavasthitaḥ
tayoḥ samīpam mām eva preṣayāmāsa satvaraḥ

27. Then, that lord of monkeys (vānanarendraḥ), having taken his position on that peak, quickly sent me (Hanuman) to their (Rama and Lakshmana's) vicinity.
तावहं पुरुषव्याघ्रौ सुग्रीववचनात् प्रभू ।
रूपलक्षणसंपन्नौ कृताञ्जलिरुपस्थितः ॥२८॥
28. tāvahaṃ puruṣavyāghrau sugrīvavacanāt prabhū ,
rūpalakṣaṇasaṃpannau kṛtāñjalirupasthitaḥ.

rūpalakṣaṇasaṃpannau kṛtāñjaliḥ upasthitaḥ

28. By Sugriva's command, I (Hanuman), with folded hands (kṛtāñjaliḥ), approached those two powerful, heroic men (puruṣavyāghrau), who were endowed with auspicious forms and characteristics.
तौ परिज्ञाततत्त्वार्थौ मया प्रीतिसमन्वितौ ।
पृष्ठमारोप्य तं देशं प्रापितौ पुरुषर्षभौ ॥२९॥
29. tau parijñātatattvārthau mayā prītisamanvitau ,
pṛṣṭhamāropya taṃ deśaṃ prāpitau puruṣarṣabhau.

29. Having fully understood their true purpose and filled with affection (prīti), I carried both of those eminent men (puruṣarṣabhau) on my back and brought them to that region.
निवेदितौ च तत्त्वेन सुग्रीवाय महात्मने ।
तयोरन्योन्यसंभाषाद्भृशं प्रीतिरजायत ॥३०॥

30. And I introduced them properly to the great-souled Sugriva. From their mutual conversation, a strong bond of affection (prīti) developed.
तत्र तौ कीर्तिसंपन्नौ हरीश्वरनरेश्वरौ ।
परस्परकृताश्वासौ कथया पूर्ववृत्तया ॥३१॥

31. There, those two renowned figures, the king of monkeys and the king of men, comforted each other through conversation about past events.
तं ततः सान्त्वयामास सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः ।
स्त्रीहेतोर्वालिना भ्रात्रा निरस्तमुरु तेजसा ॥३२॥
32. taṃ tataḥ sāntvayāmāsa sugrīvaṃ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ,
strīhetorvālinā bhrātrā nirastamuru tejasā.

32. Then, Lakṣmaṇa's elder brother (Rama) consoled Sugriva, who had been expelled by his brother Vāli on account of a woman, by Vāli's immense power (tejas).
ततस्त्वन्नाशजं शोकं रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
लक्ष्मणो वानरेन्द्राय सुग्रीवाय न्यवेदयत् ॥३३॥
33. tatastvannāśajaṃ śokaṃ rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇo vānarendrāya sugrīvāya nyavedayat.

33. Then, Lakshmana reported to Sugriva, the lord of monkeys, the grief of Rama, whose unblemished deeds (karma) arose from your loss.
स श्रुत्वा वानरेन्द्रस्तु लक्ष्मणेनेरितं वचः ।
तदासीन्निष्प्रभो ऽत्यर्थं ग्रहग्रस्त इवांशुमान् ॥३४॥
34. sa śrutvā vānarendrastu lakṣmaṇeneritaṃ vacaḥ ,
tadāsīnniṣprabho'tyarthaṃ grahagrasta ivāṃśumān.

34. Having heard the words spoken by Lakshmana, that lord of monkeys (Sugriva) then became exceedingly lusterless, like the sun caught in an eclipse.
ततस्त्वद्गात्रशोभीनि रक्षसा ह्रियमाणया ।
यान्याभरणजालानि पातितानि महीतले ॥३५॥
35. tatastvadgātraśobhīni rakṣasā hriyamāṇayā ,
yānyābharaṇajālāni pātitāni mahītale.

35. Then, those very ornament collections, which adorned your body and were dropped to the ground by you while being carried away by the demon...
तानि सर्वाणि रामाय आनीय हरियूथपाः ।
संहृष्टा दर्शयामासुर्गतिं तु न विदुस्तव ॥३६॥
36. tāni sarvāṇi rāmāya ānīya hariyūthapāḥ ,
saṃhṛṣṭā darśayāmāsurgatiṃ tu na vidustava.

36. Having brought all those (ornaments) to Rama, the greatly delighted leaders of the monkey troops showed them, but they did not know your whereabouts.
तानि रामाय दत्तानि मयैवोपहृतानि च ।
स्वनवन्त्यवकीर्णन्ति तस्मिन् विहतचेतसि ॥३७॥
37. tāni rāmāya dattāni mayaivopahṛtāni ca ,
svanavantyavakīrṇanti tasmin vihatacetasi.

37. Those (ornaments) were given to Rāma and indeed offered by me; they were sounding and scattered while he was in a state of mental distress.
तान्यङ्के दर्शनीयानि कृत्वा बहुविधं ततः ।
तेन देवप्रकाशेन देवेन परिदेवितम् ॥३८॥
38. tānyaṅke darśanīyāni kṛtvā bahuvidhaṃ tataḥ ,
tena devaprakāśena devena paridevitam.

38. Having placed those beautiful (ornaments) on his lap, then that lord, who shone like a deity, lamented in many ways.
पश्यतस्तस्या रुदतस्ताम्यतश्च पुनः पुनः ।
प्रादीपयन्दाशरथेस्तानि शोकहुताशनम् ॥३९॥
39. paśyatastasyā rudatastāmyataśca punaḥ punaḥ ,
prādīpayandāśarathestāni śokahutāśanam.
39. paśyataḥ tasya rudataḥ tāmyataḥ ca punaḥ
punaḥ prādīpayan dāśaratheḥ tāni śokahutāśanam
39. While he (Rāma) was looking at them, weeping, and repeatedly becoming distressed, those (ornaments) ignited the fire of sorrow for Daśaratha's son.
शयितं च चिरं तेन दुःखार्तेन महात्मना ।
मयापि विविधैर्वाक्यैः कृच्छ्रादुत्थापितः पुनः ॥४०॥
40. śayitaṃ ca ciraṃ tena duḥkhārtena mahātmanā ,
mayāpi vividhairvākyaiḥ kṛcchrādutthāpitaḥ punaḥ.

api vividhaiḥ vākyaiḥ kṛcchrāt utthāpitaḥ punaḥ
40. And that great soul (Rāma), afflicted by sorrow, lay down for a long time. Then I (Hanumān) also, with difficulty, roused him again with various words.
तानि दृष्ट्वा महार्हाणि दर्शयित्वा मुहुर्मुहुः ।
राघवः सहसौमित्रिः सुग्रीवे स न्यवेदयत् ॥४१॥
41. tāni dṛṣṭvā mahārhāṇi darśayitvā muhurmuhuḥ ,
rāghavaḥ sahasaumitriḥ sugrīve sa nyavedayat.

41. Having seen those very precious items and repeatedly shown them, Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana, presented them to Sugriva.
स तवादर्शनादार्ये राघवः परितप्यते ।
महता ज्वलता नित्यमग्निनेवाग्निपर्वतः ॥४२॥
42. sa tavādarśanādārye rāghavaḥ paritapyate ,
mahatā jvalatā nityamagninevāgniparvataḥ.

42. O noble lady, due to your absence, Rama is greatly tormented, just like a volcano constantly ablaze with a great fire.
त्वत्कृते तमनिद्रा च शोकश्चिन्ता च राघवम् ।
तापयन्ति महात्मानमग्न्यगारमिवाग्नयः ॥४३॥
43. tvatkṛte tamanidrā ca śokaścintā ca rāghavam ,
tāpayanti mahātmānamagnyagāramivāgnayaḥ.
43. tvat-kṛte tam anidrā ca śokaḥ cintā ca rāghavam
tāpayanti mahātmānam agnyagāram iva agnayaḥ

43. For your sake, sleeplessness, grief, and anxiety torment the great-souled one (mahātman), just as fires torment a fire-chamber (agnagaram).
तवादर्शनशोकेन राघवः प्रविचाल्यते ।
महता भूमिकम्पेन महानिव शिलोच्चयः ॥४४॥
44. tavādarśanaśokena rāghavaḥ pravicālyate ,
mahatā bhūmikampena mahāniva śiloccayaḥ.

44. Rama is greatly disturbed by the grief of your absence, just as a huge mountain is shaken by a mighty earthquake.
कानानानि सुरम्याणि नदीप्रस्रवणानि च ।
चरन्न रतिमाप्नोति त्वमपश्यन्नृपात्मजे ॥४५॥
45. kānānāni suramyāṇi nadīprasravaṇāni ca ,
caranna ratimāpnoti tvamapaśyannṛpātmaje.

caran na ratim āpnoti tvām apaśyan nṛpātmaje
45. O princess, not seeing you, he finds no joy even while roaming through beautiful forests, rivers, and springs.
स त्वां मनुजशार्दूलः क्षिप्रं प्राप्स्यति राघवः ।
समित्रबान्धवं हत्वा रावणं जनकात्मजे ॥४६॥
46. sa tvāṃ manujaśārdūlaḥ kṣipraṃ prāpsyati rāghavaḥ ,
samitrabāndhavaṃ hatvā rāvaṇaṃ janakātmaje.
46. sa tvām manujaśārdūlaḥ kṣipram prāpsyati rāghavaḥ
samitrabāndhavam hatvā rāvaṇam janakātmaje
46. O daughter of Janaka, that foremost of men, Rāghava, will quickly reach you after killing Rāvaṇa along with his friends and relatives.
सहितौ रामसुग्रीवाव् उभावकुरुतां तदा ।
समयं वालिनं हन्तुं तव चान्वेषणं तथा ॥४७॥
47. sahitau rāmasugrīvāv ubhāvakurutāṃ tadā ,
samayaṃ vālinaṃ hantuṃ tava cānveṣaṇaṃ tathā.

samayam vālinam hantum tava ca anveṣaṇam tathā
47. At that time, Rāma and Sugrīva, together, made a solemn agreement to kill Vāli and to search for you.
ततो निहत्य तरसा रामो वालिनमाहवे ।
सर्वर्क्षहरिसंघानां सुग्रीवमकरोत् पतिम् ॥४८॥
48. tato nihatya tarasā rāmo vālinamāhave ,
sarvarkṣaharisaṃghānāṃ sugrīvamakarot patim.

48. Then, swiftly killing Vāli in battle, Rāma made Sugrīva the ruler of all the hosts of bears and monkeys.
रामसुग्रीवयोरैक्यं देव्येवं समजायत ।
हनूमन्तं च मां विद्धि तयोर्दूतमिहागतम् ॥४९॥
49. rāmasugrīvayoraikyaṃ devyevaṃ samajāyata ,
hanūmantaṃ ca māṃ viddhi tayordūtamihāgatam.

hanūmantaṃ ca mām viddhi tayoḥ dūtam iha āgatam

49. O Goddess, in this manner, an alliance was formed between Rāma and Sugrīva. And know me to be Hanumān, their messenger who has arrived here.
स्वराज्यं प्राप्य सुग्रीवः समनीय महाहरीन् ।
त्वदर्थं प्रेषयामास दिशो दश महाबलान् ॥५०॥
50. svarājyaṃ prāpya sugrīvaḥ samanīya mahāharīn ,
tvadarthaṃ preṣayāmāsa diśo daśa mahābalān.

50. Having obtained his own kingdom, Sugrīva gathered mighty monkeys and dispatched them in all ten directions for your sake.
आदिष्टा वानरेन्द्रेण सुग्रीवेण महौजसः ।
अद्रिराजप्रतीकाशाः सर्वतः प्रस्थिता महीम् ॥५१॥
51. ādiṣṭā vānarendreṇa sugrīveṇa mahaujasaḥ ,
adrirājapratīkāśāḥ sarvataḥ prasthitā mahīm.

51. Those mighty ones, who resembled great mountain peaks, were commanded by Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, and departed everywhere across the earth.

प्रस्थितः कपिशार्दूलस्त्रिभागबलसंवृतः ॥५२॥
52. aṅgado nāma lakṣmīvān vālisūnurmahābalaḥ ,

52. Angada by name, the glorious and mighty son of Vāli, a foremost monkey, set out, accompanied by one-third of the army.
तेषां नो विप्रनष्टानां विन्ध्ये पर्वतसत्तमे ।
भृशं शोकपरीतनामहोरात्रगणा गताः ॥५३॥
53. teṣāṃ no vipranaṣṭānāṃ vindhye parvatasattame ,
bhṛśaṃ śokaparītanāmahorātragaṇā gatāḥ.

53. For us, who are utterly lost in the most excellent Vindhya mountain, and deeply overcome by sorrow, many days and nights have passed.
ते वयं कार्यनैराश्यात् कालस्यातिक्रमेण च ।
भयाच्च कपिराजस्य प्राणांस्त्यक्तुं व्यवस्थिताः ॥५४॥
54. te vayaṃ kāryanairāśyāt kālasyātikrameṇa ca ,
bhayācca kapirājasya prāṇāṃstyaktuṃ vyavasthitāḥ.

54. Due to despair regarding our task, the passing of time, and fear of the monkey king, we are resolved to abandon our lives.
विचित्य वनदुर्गाणि गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च ।
अनासाद्य पदं देव्याः प्राणांस्त्यक्तुं व्यवस्थिताः ॥५५॥
55. vicitya vanadurgāṇi giriprasravaṇāni ca ,
anāsādya padaṃ devyāḥ prāṇāṃstyaktuṃ vyavasthitāḥ.

55. Having searched through the impassable forest regions and mountain springs, but not having found any trace of the goddess, we are resolved to abandon our lives.
भृशं शोकार्णवे मग्नः पर्यदेवयदङ्गदः ।
तव नाशं च वैदेहि वालिनश्च तथा वधम् ।
प्रायोपवेशमस्माकं मरणं च जटायुषः ॥५६॥
56. bhṛśaṃ śokārṇave magnaḥ paryadevayadaṅgadaḥ ,
tava nāśaṃ ca vaidehi vālinaśca tathā vadham ,
prāyopaveśamasmākaṃ maraṇaṃ ca jaṭāyuṣaḥ.

56. Deeply immersed in the ocean of sorrow, Aṅgada lamented, mentioning your loss, O Vaidehī, and also the death of Vālin, our resolve to fast unto death (prāyopaveśa), and the demise of Jaṭāyu.
तेषां नः स्वामिसंदेशान्निराशानां मुमूर्षताम् ।
कार्यहेतोरिवायातः शकुनिर्वीर्यवान्महान् ॥५७॥
57. teṣāṃ naḥ svāmisaṃdeśānnirāśānāṃ mumūrṣatām ,
kāryahetorivāyātaḥ śakunirvīryavānmahān.

57. To us, who were despairing and wishing to die on account of our master's mission, a great and powerful bird (śakuni) arrived, as if sent for the very purpose of our task.
गृध्रराजस्य सोदर्यः संपातिर्नाम गृध्रराट् ।
श्रुत्वा भ्रातृवधं कोपादिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५८॥
58. gṛdhrarājasya sodaryaḥ saṃpātirnāma gṛdhrarāṭ ,
śrutvā bhrātṛvadhaṃ kopādidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

58. Sampāti, the king of vultures and brother of the vulture king (Jaṭāyu), upon hearing of his brother's death, spoke these words out of anger.
यवीयान् केन मे भ्राता हतः क्व च विनाशितः ।
एतदाख्यातुमिच्छामि भवद्भिर्वानरोत्तमाः ॥५९॥
59. yavīyān kena me bhrātā hataḥ kva ca vināśitaḥ ,
etadākhyātumicchāmi bhavadbhirvānarottamāḥ.

59. By whom was my younger brother killed, and where did he meet his end? O best of monkeys, I wish to hear this from you all.

रक्षसा भीमरूपेण त्वामुद्दिश्य यथातथम् ॥६०॥
60. aṅgado'kathayattasya janasthāne mahadvadham ,
rakṣasā bhīmarūpeṇa tvāmuddiśya yathātatham.

60. Angada accurately recounted to him (Sampāti) the great slaying that took place in Janasthāna by a terrifying demon, an act directed towards him (Jaṭāyu).
जटायोस्तु वधं श्रुत्वा दुःखितः सो ऽरुणात्मजः ।
त्वामाह स वरारोहे वसन्तीं रावणालये ॥६१॥
61. jaṭāyostu vadhaṃ śrutvā duḥkhitaḥ so'ruṇātmajaḥ ,
tvāmāha sa varārohe vasantīṃ rāvaṇālaye.

61. Upon hearing of Jatayu's death, that son of Aruna (Sampati) became distressed. He then spoke of you, O lady with beautiful hips, dwelling in Ravana's abode.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा संपातेः प्रीतिवर्धनम् ।
अङ्गदप्रमुखाः सर्वे ततः संप्रस्थिता वयम् ।
त्वद्दर्शनकृतोत्साहा हृष्टास्तुष्टाः प्लवंगमाः ॥६२॥
62. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā saṃpāteḥ prītivardhanam ,
aṅgadapramukhāḥ sarve tataḥ saṃprasthitā vayam ,
tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhā hṛṣṭāstuṣṭāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ.
62. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā sampāteḥ
prītivardhanam aṅgadapramukhāḥ sarve
tataḥ samprasthitāḥ vayam tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhāḥ
hṛṣṭāḥ tuṣṭāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ
62. sampāteḥ tasya tat prītivardhanam
vacanam śrutvā aṅgadapramukhāḥ sarve
vayam tataḥ samprasthitāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ
tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ tuṣṭāḥ
62. Having heard that delight-enhancing statement of Sampati, all of us, led by Angada, then set out. The monkeys were delighted and contented, their enthusiasm generated by the prospect of seeing you.
अथाहं हरिसैन्यस्य सागरं दृश्य सीदतः ।
व्यवधूय भयं तीव्रं योजनानां शतं प्लुतः ॥६३॥
63. athāhaṃ harisainyasya sāgaraṃ dṛśya sīdataḥ ,
vyavadhūya bhayaṃ tīvraṃ yojanānāṃ śataṃ plutaḥ.
63. atha aham harisainyasya sāgaram dṛśya sīdataḥ
vyavadhūya bhayam tīvram yojanānām śatam plutaḥ
63. atha aham sāgaram dṛśya sīdataḥ harisainyasya
tīvram bhayam vyavadhūya yojanānām śatam plutaḥ
63. Then I, seeing the monkey army despairing at the sight of the ocean, cast off intense fear and leaped a hundred yojanas.
लङ्का चापि मया रात्रौ प्रविष्टा राक्षसाकुला ।
रावणश्च मया दृष्टस्त्वं च शोकनिपीडिता ॥६४॥
64. laṅkā cāpi mayā rātrau praviṣṭā rākṣasākulā ,
rāvaṇaśca mayā dṛṣṭastvaṃ ca śokanipīḍitā.
64. laṅkā ca api mayā rātrau praviṣṭā rākṣasākulā
rāvaṇaḥ ca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ tvam ca śokanipīḍitā
64. rākṣasākulā laṅkā ca api mayā rātrau praviṣṭā
rāvaṇaḥ ca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ tvam ca śokanipīḍitā
64. And Lanka, teeming with Rākṣasas, was entered by me at night. Ravana was also seen by me, and you, afflicted by sorrow.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथावृत्तमनिन्दिते ।
अभिभाषस्व मां देवि दूतो दाशरथेरहम् ॥६५॥
65. etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ yathāvṛttamanindite ,
abhibhāṣasva māṃ devi dūto dāśaratheraham.
65. etat te sarvam ākhyātam yathāvṛttam anindite
abhibhāṣasva mām devi dūtaḥ dāśaratheḥ aham
65. anindite devi aham dūtaḥ dāśaratheḥ te etat
sarvam yathāvṛttam ākhyātam mām abhibhāṣasva
65. O blameless one, all this has been truthfully recounted to you. Speak to me, O goddess; I am a messenger of Daśaratha's son, Rāma.
त्वं मां रामकृतोद्योगं त्वन्निमित्तमिहागतम् ।
सुग्रीव सचिवं देवि बुध्यस्व पवनात्मजम् ॥६६॥
66. tvaṃ māṃ rāmakṛtodyogaṃ tvannimittamihāgatam ,
sugrīva sacivaṃ devi budhyasva pavanātmajam.
66. tvam mām rāmakṛtodyogam tvannimittam iha āgatam
sugrīvasacivam devi budhyasva pavanātmajam
66. devi tvam mām rāmakṛtodyogam tvannimittam iha

66. O goddess, understand that I am Sugrīva's minister, the son of the wind (pavanātmaja), who has come here for your sake, driven by Rāma's efforts.
कुशली तव काकुत्स्थः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
गुरोराराधने युक्तो लक्ष्मणश्च सुलक्षणः ॥६७॥
67. kuśalī tava kākutsthaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ,
gurorārādhane yukto lakṣmaṇaśca sulakṣaṇaḥ.

guroḥ ārādhane yuktaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ ca sulakṣaṇaḥ

67. Your Rāma (kākutstha), the foremost among all weapon-bearers, is safe and well. And Lakṣmaṇa, endowed with auspicious marks, is engaged in serving his elder (guru), Rāma.
तस्य वीर्यवतो देवि भर्तुस्तव हिते रतः ।
अहमेकस्तु संप्राप्तः सुग्रीववचनादिह ॥६८॥
68. tasya vīryavato devi bhartustava hite rataḥ ,
ahamekastu saṃprāptaḥ sugrīvavacanādiha.

68. O goddess, I am devoted to the welfare of your mighty husband. Indeed, I alone have arrived here by the command of (King) Sugrīva.
मयेयमसहायेन चरता कामरूपिणा ।
दक्षिणा दिगनुक्रान्ता त्वन्मार्गविचयैषिणा ॥६९॥
69. mayeyamasahāyena caratā kāmarūpiṇā ,
dakṣiṇā diganukrāntā tvanmārgavicayaiṣiṇā.

dakṣiṇā dik anukrāntā tvanmārgavicayaiṣiṇā
69. iyam dakṣiṇā dik mayā asahāyena caratā

69. This southern direction has been completely traversed by me, who wandered alone, capable of assuming any form at will, and seeking to find your whereabouts.
दिष्ट्याहं हरिसैन्यानां त्वन्नाशमनुशोचताम् ।
अपनेष्यामि संतापं तवाभिगमशंसनात् ॥७०॥
70. diṣṭyāhaṃ harisainyānāṃ tvannāśamanuśocatām ,
apaneṣyāmi saṃtāpaṃ tavābhigamaśaṃsanāt.
70. diṣṭyā aham harisainyānām tvannāśam anuśocatām
apaneṣyāmi saṃtāpam tavābhigamaśaṃsanāt
70. diṣṭyā aham tavābhigamaśaṃsanāt harisainyānām
tvannāśam anuśocatām saṃtāpam apaneṣyāmi
70. Fortunately, I will alleviate the distress of the monkey armies, who are lamenting your disappearance, by announcing your impending arrival.
दिष्ट्या हि न मम व्यर्थं देवि सागरलङ्घनम् ।
प्राप्स्याम्यहमिदं दिष्ट्या त्वद्दर्शनकृतं यशः ॥७१॥
71. diṣṭyā hi na mama vyarthaṃ devi sāgaralaṅghanam ,
prāpsyāmyahamidaṃ diṣṭyā tvaddarśanakṛtaṃ yaśaḥ.
71. diṣṭyā hi na mama vyartham devi sāgaralaṅghanam
prāpsyāmi aham idam diṣṭyā tvaddarśanakṛtam yaśaḥ
71. devi diṣṭyā hi mama sāgaralaṅghanam na vyartham
diṣṭyā aham idam tvaddarśanakṛtam yaśaḥ prāpsyāmi
71. Indeed, O goddess, my crossing of the ocean has fortunately not been in vain. Through this auspicious encounter of seeing you, I will gain great renown.
राघवश्च महावीर्यः क्षिप्रं त्वामभिपत्स्यते ।
समित्रबान्धवं हत्वा रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ॥७२॥
72. rāghavaśca mahāvīryaḥ kṣipraṃ tvāmabhipatsyate ,
samitrabāndhavaṃ hatvā rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam.
72. rāghavaḥ ca mahāvīryaḥ kṣipram tvām abhipatsyate
samitrabāndhavam hatvā rāvaṇam rākṣasādhipam
72. mahāvīryaḥ rāghavaḥ ca samitrabāndhavam
rākṣasādhipam rāvaṇam hatvā kṣipram tvām abhipatsyate
72. And Rāghava, who is endowed with great valor, will swiftly reach you after slaying Rāvaṇa, the ruler of the rākṣasas, along with all his friends and kinsmen.
कौरजो नाम वैदेहि गिरीणामुत्तमो गिरिः ।
ततो गच्छति गोकर्णं पर्वतं केसरी हरिः ॥७३॥
73. kaurajo nāma vaidehi girīṇāmuttamo giriḥ ,
tato gacchati gokarṇaṃ parvataṃ kesarī hariḥ.

tataḥ gacchati gokarṇam parvatam kesarī hariḥ

73. O Vaidehī, there is a mountain named Kauraja, the foremost among mountains. From there, the lion-like monkey Kesari went to Mount Gokarna.
स च देवर्षिभिर्दृष्टः पिता मम महाकपिः ।
तीर्थे नदीपतेः पुण्ये शम्बसादनमुद्धरत् ॥७४॥
74. sa ca devarṣibhirdṛṣṭaḥ pitā mama mahākapiḥ ,
tīrthe nadīpateḥ puṇye śambasādanamuddharat.

74. And he, my great monkey father, was seen by the divine sages (devarṣis). At the sacred pilgrimage site (tīrtha) of the ocean, he rescued Śambasādana.
तस्याहं हरिणः क्षेत्रे जातो वातेन मैथिलि ।
हनूमानिति विख्यातो लोके स्वेनैव कर्मणा ।
विश्वासार्थं तु वैदेहि भर्तुरुक्ता मया गुणाः ॥७५॥
75. tasyāhaṃ hariṇaḥ kṣetre jāto vātena maithili ,
hanūmāniti vikhyāto loke svenaiva karmaṇā ,
viśvāsārthaṃ tu vaidehi bharturuktā mayā guṇāḥ.
75. tasya aham hariṇaḥ kṣetre jātaḥ vātena
maithili hanumān iti vikhyātaḥ
loke svena eva karmaṇā viśvāsārtham
tu vaidehi bhartuḥ uktā mayā guṇāḥ
75. maithili aham tasya hariṇaḥ kṣetre
vātena jātaḥ svena eva karmaṇā loke
hanumān iti vikhyātaḥ vaidehi
viśvāsārtham tu bhartuḥ guṇāḥ mayā uktā
75. O Maithilī, I was born in the lineage of that monkey (Kesari) through Vāyu (the wind god). I am renowned in the world as Hanumān by my own actions (karma). And indeed, O Vaidehī, these virtues of your husband have been recounted by me for the sake of your conviction.
एवं विश्वासिता सीता हेतुभिः शोककर्शिता ।
उपपन्नैरभिज्ञानैर्दूतं तमवगच्छति ॥७६॥
76. evaṃ viśvāsitā sītā hetubhiḥ śokakarśitā ,
upapannairabhijñānairdūtaṃ tamavagacchati.
76. evam viśvāśitā sītā hetubhiḥ śokakarśitā
upapannaiḥ abhijñānaiḥ dūtam tam avagacchati
76. evam śokakarśitā sītā hetubhiḥ viśvāśitā

76. Thus, Sītā, emaciated by grief, was convinced by these reasons. Through these appropriate identifying marks, she understood him to be the messenger.
अतुलं च गता हर्षं प्रहर्षेण तु जानकी ।
नेत्राभ्यां वक्रपक्ष्माभ्यां मुमोचानन्दजं जलम् ॥७७॥
77. atulaṃ ca gatā harṣaṃ praharṣeṇa tu jānakī ,
netrābhyāṃ vakrapakṣmābhyāṃ mumocānandajaṃ jalam.
77. atulam ca gatā harṣam praharṣeṇa tu jānakī
netrābhyām vakrapakṣmābhyām mumoca ānandajam jalam
77. jānakī tu atulam harṣam praharṣeṇa ca gatā,
vakrapakṣmābhyām netrābhyām ānandajam jalam mumoca.
77. Janaki, having attained immeasurable joy and great ecstasy, shed tears born of happiness from her eyes with curved eyelashes.
चारु तच्चाननं तस्यास्ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम् ।
अशोभत विशालाक्ष्या राहुमुक्त इवोडुराट् ।
हनूमन्तं कपिं व्यक्तं मन्यते नान्यथेति सा ॥७८॥
78. cāru taccānanaṃ tasyāstāmraśuklāyatekṣaṇam ,
aśobhata viśālākṣyā rāhumukta ivoḍurāṭ ,
hanūmantaṃ kapiṃ vyaktaṃ manyate nānyatheti sā.
78. cāru tat ca ānanam tasyāḥ
tāmraśuklāyatekṣaṇam aśobhata viśālākṣyā
rāhumuktaḥ iva uḍurāṭ hanūmantam
kapim vyaktam manyate na anyathā iti sā
78. tasyāḥ cāru ca tāmraśuklāyatekṣaṇam ānanam viśālākṣyā rāhumuktaḥ uḍurāṭ iva aśobhata.
sā vyaktam hanūmantam kapim manyate,
na anyathā iti.
78. Her beautiful face, with its wide, reddish-white eyes, shone like the moon released from Rahu. She clearly believed him to be Hanuman, and no one else.
अथोवाच हनूमांस्तामुत्तरं
प्रियदर्शनाम् ॥७९॥
79. athovāca hanūmāṃstāmuttaraṃ
priyadarśanām.

79. Then Hanuman spoke in reply to her, the beautiful one.
हते ऽसुरे संयति शम्बसादने कपिप्रवीरेण महर्षिचोदनात् ।
ततो ऽस्मि वायुप्रभवो हि मैथिलि प्रभावतस्तत्प्रतिमश्च वानरः ॥८०॥
80. hate'sure saṃyati śambasādane kapipravīreṇa maharṣicodanāt ,
tato'smi vāyuprabhavo hi maithili prabhāvatastatpratimaśca vānaraḥ.
80. hate asure saṃyati śambasādane
kapipravīreṇa maharṣicodanāt tataḥ
asmi vāyuprabhavaḥ hi maithili
prabhāvataḥ tatpratimaḥ ca vānaraḥ
80. maharṣicodanāt kapipravīreṇa śambasādane asure saṃyati hate,
tataḥ he maithili! hi (aham) वायुप्रभवः अस्मि,
प्रभावतः च तत्प्रतिमः वानरः (अस्मि)।
80. When the demon Śambasādana was slain in battle by the chief of monkeys (Hanuman) at the great sage's command, then, O Maithili, I am indeed born of Vāyu, and by my power, I am equal to him and also a monkey (vanara).
