अङ्गदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवः सचिवैः सह ।
लक्ष्मणं कुपितं श्रुत्वा मुमोचासनमात्मवान् ॥१॥

1. Having heard Angada's words, and having also heard that Lakshmana was enraged, the self-possessed Sugriva, accompanied by his ministers, gave up his seat.
सचिवानब्रवीद्वाक्यं निश्चित्य गुरुलाघवम् ।
मन्त्रज्ञान्मन्त्रकुशलो मन्त्रेषु परिनिष्ठितः ॥२॥
2. sacivānabravīdvākyaṃ niścitya gurulāghavam ,
mantrajñānmantrakuśalo mantreṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ.

mantrajñān mantrakuśalaḥ mantreṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ

2. The one who was knowledgeable, skilled, and deeply accomplished in counsel, having carefully ascertained the gravity and triviality of the matter, spoke these words to his ministers.
न मे दुर्व्याहृतं किं चिन्नापि मे दुरनुष्ठितम् ।
लक्ष्मणो राघवभ्राता क्रुद्धः किमिति चिन्तये ॥३॥
3. na me durvyāhṛtaṃ kiṃ cinnāpi me duranuṣṭhitam ,
lakṣmaṇo rāghavabhrātā kruddhaḥ kimiti cintaye.
3. na me durvyāhṛtam kim cit na api me duranuṣṭhitam
lakṣmaṇaḥ rāghavabhrātā kruddhaḥ kim iti cintaye
3. me kim durvyāhṛtam na,
na api me kim duranuṣṭhitam.
rāghavabhrātā lakṣmaṇaḥ kim kruddhaḥ iti cintaye
3. I have not spoken anything amiss, nor have I done anything improperly. I wonder why Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, is angry.
असुहृद्भिर्ममामित्रैर्नित्यमन्तरदर्शिभिः ।
मम दोषानसंभूताञ् श्रावितो राघवानुजः ॥४॥
4. asuhṛdbhirmamāmitrairnityamantaradarśibhiḥ ,
mama doṣānasaṃbhūtāñ śrāvito rāghavānujaḥ.
4. asuhṛdbhiḥ mama amitraiḥ nityam antaradarśibhiḥ
mama doṣān asaṃbhūtān śrāvitaḥ rāghavānujaḥ
4. mama asuhṛdbhiḥ,

4. Rama's younger brother has been informed of my non-existent faults by my constant ill-wishers and enemies, who always look for weaknesses.
अत्र तावद् यथाबुद्धि सर्वैरेव यथाविधि ।
भवद्भिर्निश्चयस्तस्य विज्ञेयो निपुणं शनैः ॥५॥
5. atra tāvad yathābuddhi sarvaireva yathāvidhi ,
bhavadbhirniścayastasya vijñeyo nipuṇaṃ śanaiḥ.
5. atra tāvat yathābuddhi sarvaiḥ eva yathāvidhi
bhavadbhiḥ niścayaḥ tasya vijñeyaḥ nipuṇam śanaiḥ
5. atra tāvat sarvaiḥ eva bhavadbhiḥ yathābuddhi
yathāvidhi tasya niścayaḥ nipuṇam śanaiḥ vijñeyaḥ
5. Therefore, in this matter, a decision regarding it should be carefully and thoroughly investigated by all of you, each according to your wisdom and in accordance with proper procedure.
न खल्वस्ति मम त्रासो लक्ष्मणान्नापि राघवात् ।
मित्रं त्वस्थान कुपितं जनयत्येव संभ्रमम् ॥६॥
6. na khalvasti mama trāso lakṣmaṇānnāpi rāghavāt ,
mitraṃ tvasthāna kupitaṃ janayatyeva saṃbhramam.
6. na khalu asti mama trāsaḥ lakṣmaṇāt na api rāghavāt
mitram tu asthāna kupitam janayati eva saṃbhramam
6. mama trāsaḥ lakṣmaṇāt na asti api rāghavāt na khalu
tu asthāna kupitam mitram eva saṃbhramam janayati
6. Certainly, I have no fear from Lakṣmaṇa, nor even from Rāma. However, a friend angered without cause certainly creates agitation.
सर्वथा सुकरं मित्रं दुष्करं परिपालनम् ।
अनित्यत्वात्तु चित्तानां प्रीतिरल्पे ऽपि भिद्यते ॥७॥
7. sarvathā sukaraṃ mitraṃ duṣkaraṃ paripālanam ,
anityatvāttu cittānāṃ prītiralpe'pi bhidyate.
7. sarvathā sukaram mitram duṣkaram paripālanam
anityatvāt tu cittānām prītiḥ alpe api bhidyate
7. mitram sarvathā sukaram paripālanam duṣkaram tu
cittānām anityatvāt alpe api prītiḥ bhidyate
7. Making friends is always easy, but maintaining them is difficult. Due to the impermanence of minds, affection (prīti) breaks even over a small matter.
अतोनिमित्तं त्रस्तो ऽहं रामेण तु महात्मना ।
यन्ममोपकृतं शक्यं प्रतिकर्तुं न तन्मया ॥८॥
8. atonimittaṃ trasto'haṃ rāmeṇa tu mahātmanā ,
yanmamopakṛtaṃ śakyaṃ pratikartuṃ na tanmayā.
8. ataḥ nimittam trastaḥ aham rāmeṇa tu mahātmanā
yat mama upakṛtam śakyam pratikartum na tat mayā
8. ataḥ nimittam aham trastaḥ tu mahātmanā rāmeṇa
yat mama upakṛtam tat mayā pratikartum na śakyam
8. For this reason, I am afraid, particularly concerning the great-souled Rāma (mahātman). What has been done as a favor for me by him, it is not possible for me to repay that.
सुग्रीवेणैवमुक्तस्तु हनुमान् हरिपुंगवः ।
उवाच स्वेन तर्केण मध्ये वानरमन्त्रिणाम् ॥९॥
9. sugrīveṇaivamuktastu hanumān haripuṃgavaḥ ,
uvāca svena tarkeṇa madhye vānaramantriṇām.
9. sugrīveṇa eva uktaḥ tu hanumān haripuṅgavaḥ
uvāca svena tarkeṇa madhye vānaramantriṇām
9. tu sugrīveṇa eva uktaḥ haripuṅgavaḥ hanumān

9. But Hanumān, the foremost among monkeys, thus addressed by Sugrīva, spoke with his own reasoning amidst the monkey ministers.
सर्वथा नैतदाश्चर्यं यत्त्वं हरिगणेश्वर ।
न विस्मरसि सुस्निग्धमुपकारकृतं शुभम् ॥१०॥
10. sarvathā naitadāścaryaṃ yattvaṃ harigaṇeśvara ,
na vismarasi susnigdhamupakārakṛtaṃ śubham.
10. sarvathā na etat āścaryam yat tvam harigaṇeśvara
na vismarasi susnigdham upakārakṛtam śubham
10. harigaṇeśvara tvam susnigdham śubham upakārakṛtam
na vismarasi etat sarvathā āścaryam na yat
10. It is certainly no surprise, O lord of the monkey army, that you do not forget the very kind and auspicious help rendered.
राघवेण तु शूरेण भयमुत्सृज्य दूरतः ।
त्वत्प्रियार्थं हतो वाली शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः ॥११॥
11. rāghaveṇa tu śūreṇa bhayamutsṛjya dūrataḥ ,
tvatpriyārthaṃ hato vālī śakratulyaparākramaḥ.
11. rāghaveṇa tu śūreṇa bhayam utsṛjya dūrataḥ
tvatpriyārtham hataḥ vālī śakratulyaparākramaḥ
11. tu śūreṇa rāghaveṇa bhayam dūrataḥ utsṛjya
tvatpriyārtham śakratulyaparākramaḥ vālī hataḥ
11. Indeed, by the brave Rāghava (Rāma), having completely cast off fear, Vāli - whose might was equal to Indra's - was killed from a distance for your sake.
सर्वथा प्रणयात् क्रुद्धो राघवो नात्र संशयः ।
भ्रातरं स प्रहितवांल् लक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मिवर्धनम् ॥१२॥
12. sarvathā praṇayāt kruddho rāghavo nātra saṃśayaḥ ,
bhrātaraṃ sa prahitavāṃl lakṣmaṇaṃ lakṣmivardhanam.
12. sarvathā praṇayāt kruddhaḥ rāghavaḥ na atra saṃśayaḥ
bhrātaram saḥ prahitavān lakṣmaṇam lakṣmivardhanam
12. sarvathā praṇayāt rāghavaḥ kruddhaḥ atra saṃśayaḥ na
saḥ lakṣmivardhanam bhrātaram lakṣmaṇam prahitavān
12. Certainly, Rāghava was enraged out of affection; there is no doubt about this. He sent his brother Lakṣmaṇa, the enhancer of prosperity.
त्वं प्रमत्तो न जानीषे कालं कलविदां वर ।
फुल्लसप्तच्छदश्यामा प्रवृत्ता तु शरच्छिवा ॥१३॥
13. tvaṃ pramatto na jānīṣe kālaṃ kalavidāṃ vara ,
phullasaptacchadaśyāmā pravṛttā tu śaracchivā.
13. tvam pramattaḥ na jānīṣe kālam kalavidām vara
phullasaptacchadaśyāmā pravṛttā tu śarat śivā
13. kalavidām vara tvam pramattaḥ kālam na jānīṣe
tu phullasaptacchadaśyāmā śivā śarat pravṛttā
13. O best among those who know the opportune moment, you are negligent and do not recognize the time. Indeed, the auspicious autumn, dark like the blossomed saptacchada flowers, has begun.
निर्मल ग्रहनक्षत्रा द्यौः प्रनष्टबलाहका ।
प्रसन्नाश्च दिशः सर्वाः सरितश्च सरांसि च ॥१४॥
14. nirmala grahanakṣatrā dyauḥ pranaṣṭabalāhakā ,
prasannāśca diśaḥ sarvāḥ saritaśca sarāṃsi ca.
14. nirmala grahanakṣatrā dyauḥ pranaṣṭabalāhakā
prasannāḥ ca diśaḥ sarvāḥ saritaḥ ca sarāṃsi ca
14. dyauḥ nirmala grahanakṣatrā pranaṣṭabalāhakā
sarvāḥ diśaḥ ca prasannāḥ saritaḥ ca sarāṃsi ca
14. The sky is clear, with its planets and constellations shining brightly and its clouds dispersed. All directions are serene, as are the rivers and lakes.
प्राप्तमुद्योगकालं तु नावैषि हरिपुंगव ।
त्वं प्रमत्त इति व्यक्तं लक्ष्मणो ऽयमिहागतः ॥१५॥
15. prāptamudyogakālaṃ tu nāvaiṣi haripuṃgava ,
tvaṃ pramatta iti vyaktaṃ lakṣmaṇo'yamihāgataḥ.
15. prāptam udyogakālam tu na avaiṣi haripuṅgava tvam
pramattaḥ iti vyaktam lakṣmaṇaḥ ayam iha āgataḥ
15. haripuṅgava,
tu tvam prāptam udyogakālam na avaiṣi vyaktam pramattaḥ iti ayam lakṣmaṇaḥ iha āgataḥ
15. O best among monkeys, you do not recognize that the time for endeavor has arrived. It is clearly due to your negligence that Lakshmana has come here.
आर्तस्य हृतदारस्य परुषं पुरुषान्तरात् ।
वचनं मर्षणीयं ते राघवस्य महात्मनः ॥१६॥
16. ārtasya hṛtadārasya paruṣaṃ puruṣāntarāt ,
vacanaṃ marṣaṇīyaṃ te rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ.
16. ārtasya hṛtadārasya paruṣam puruṣāntarāt
vacanam marṣaṇīyam te rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ
16. te rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ ārtasya hṛtadārasya
puruṣāntarāt paruṣam vacanam marṣaṇīyam
16. This harsh speech, coming from the great-souled Raghava who is distressed and whose wife has been abducted, should be forgiven by you.
कृतापराधस्य हि ते नान्यत् पश्याम्यहं क्षमम् ।
अन्तरेणाञ्जलिं बद्ध्वा लक्ष्मणस्य प्रसादनात् ॥१७॥
17. kṛtāparādhasya hi te nānyat paśyāmyahaṃ kṣamam ,
antareṇāñjaliṃ baddhvā lakṣmaṇasya prasādanāt.
17. kṛtāparādhasya hi te na anyat paśyāmi aham kṣamam
antareṇa añjalim baddhvā lakṣmaṇasya prasādanāt
17. hi kṛtāparādhasya te aham anyat kṣamam na paśyāmi
antareṇa añjalim baddhvā lakṣmaṇasya prasādanāt
17. Indeed, for you who have committed an offense, I see nothing else appropriate apart from joining your hands in supplication and propitiating Lakshmana.
नियुक्तैर्मन्त्रिभिर्वाच्यो अवश्यं पार्थिवो हितम् ।
अत एव भयं त्यक्त्वा ब्रवीम्यवधृतं वचः ॥१८॥
18. niyuktairmantribhirvācyo avaśyaṃ pārthivo hitam ,
ata eva bhayaṃ tyaktvā bravīmyavadhṛtaṃ vacaḥ.
18. niyuktaiḥ mantribhiḥ vācyaḥ avaśyam pārthivaḥ hitam
| ataḥ eva bhayam tyaktvā bravīmi avadhṛtam vacaḥ
18. niyuktaiḥ mantribhiḥ pārthivaḥ hitam avaśyam vācyaḥ
ataḥ eva bhayam tyaktvā avadhṛtam vacaḥ bravīmi
18. Ministers who have been appointed are obligated to speak what is beneficial to the king. For this very reason, having cast aside all fear, I utter these resolute words.
अभिक्रुद्धः समर्थो हि चापमुद्यम्य राघवः ।
सदेवासुरगन्धर्वं वशे स्थापयितुं जगत् ॥१९॥
19. abhikruddhaḥ samartho hi cāpamudyamya rāghavaḥ ,
sadevāsuragandharvaṃ vaśe sthāpayituṃ jagat.
19. abhikruddhaḥ samarthaḥ hi cāpam udyamya rāghavaḥ
| sadevāsuragandharvam vaśe sthāpayitum jagat
19. abhikruddhaḥ rāghavaḥ hi cāpam udyamya
sadevāsuragandharvam jagat vaśe sthāpayitum samarthaḥ
19. Indeed, the greatly enraged Rāghava (Rāma), having raised his bow, is capable of bringing the entire world, including its gods, asuras, and gandharvas, under his complete control.
न स क्षमः कोपयितुं यः प्रसाद्य पुनर्भवेत् ।
पूर्वोपकारं स्मरता कृतज्ञेन विशेषतः ॥२०॥
20. na sa kṣamaḥ kopayituṃ yaḥ prasādya punarbhavet ,
pūrvopakāraṃ smaratā kṛtajñena viśeṣataḥ.
20. na saḥ kṣamaḥ kopayitum yaḥ prasādya punar bhavet
| pūrvopakāram smaratā kṛtajñena viśeṣataḥ
20. yaḥ punar prasādya bhavet,
saḥ kopayitum na kṣamaḥ viśeṣataḥ pūrvopakāram smaratā kṛtajñena (na kṣamaḥ kopayitum)
20. One should not anger someone who can eventually be appeased again, especially if one is grateful and remembers past kindness.
तस्य मूर्ध्ना प्रणम्य त्वं सपुत्रः ससुहृज्जनः ।
राजंस्तिष्ठ स्वसमये भर्तुर्भार्येव तद्वशे ॥२१॥
21. tasya mūrdhnā praṇamya tvaṃ saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ ,
rājaṃstiṣṭha svasamaye bharturbhāryeva tadvaśe.
21. tasya mūrdhnā praṇamya tvam saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ
| rājan tiṣṭha svasamaye bhartuḥ bhāryā iva tadvaśe
21. rājan tvam saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ tasya mūrdhnā praṇamya,
bhartuḥ bhāryā iva tadvaśe svasamaye tiṣṭha
21. O King, you, together with your son and companions, should bow your head to him and remain in your proper station, just as a wife remains submissive to her husband.
न रामरामानुजशासनं त्वया कपीन्द्रयुक्तं मनसाप्यपोहितुम् ।
मनो हि ते ज्ञास्यति मानुषं बलं सराघवस्यास्य सुरेन्द्रवर्चसः ॥२२॥
22. na rāmarāmānujaśāsanaṃ tvayā kapīndrayuktaṃ manasāpyapohitum ,
mano hi te jñāsyati mānuṣaṃ balaṃ sarāghavasyāsya surendravarcasaḥ.
22. na rāmarāmānujśāsanam tvayā
kapīndrayuktam manasā api apohitum manaḥ
hi te jñāsyati mānuṣam balam
sarāghavasya asya surendravarcasaḥ
22. tvayā rāmarāmānujśāsanam kapīndrayuktam
manasā api apohitum na hi
te manaḥ asya sarāghavasya
surendravarcasaḥ mānuṣam balam jñāsyati
22. O king of monkeys, you cannot disregard the command of Rāma and his younger brother (Lakṣmaṇa), which is accompanied by the lord of monkeys, even in thought. For your mind will surely recognize the human strength of this Lakṣmaṇa, who is accompanied by Rāma and possesses the valor of the lord of gods.
