ततः समुपजिघ्रन्ती कपिराजस्य तन्मुखम् ।
पतिं लोकाच्च्युतं तारा मृतं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. Then, Tara, smelling and kissing the face of that monkey king, spoke these words to her deceased husband, who had fallen from his earthly realm.
शेषे त्वं विषमे दुःखमकृत्वा वचनं मम ।
उपलोपचिते वीर सुदुःखे वसुधातले ॥२॥
2. śeṣe tvaṃ viṣame duḥkhamakṛtvā vacanaṃ mama ,
upalopacite vīra suduḥkhe vasudhātale.

2. O hero, you lie miserably in this dangerous and very painful place, on the ground covered with stones, without heeding my command.
मत्तः प्रियतरा नूनं वानरेन्द्र मही तव ।
शेषे हि तां परिष्वज्य मां च न प्रतिभाषसे ॥३॥
3. mattaḥ priyatarā nūnaṃ vānarendra mahī tava ,
śeṣe hi tāṃ pariṣvajya māṃ ca na pratibhāṣase.

3. O lord of monkeys, surely the earth is dearer to you than I am. Indeed, you lie embracing her, and you do not speak to me.
सुग्रीव एव विक्रान्तो वीर साहसिक प्रिय ।
ऋक्षवानरमुख्यास्त्वां बलिनं पर्युपासते ॥४॥
4. sugrīva eva vikrānto vīra sāhasika priya ,
ṛkṣavānaramukhyāstvāṃ balinaṃ paryupāsate.

4. O courageous and beloved adventurous hero, Sugrīva alone is truly valorous. The chiefs of bears and monkeys attend upon you, the mighty one.
एषां विलपितं कृच्छ्रमङ्गदस्य च शोचतः ।
मम चेमां गिरं श्रुत्वा किं त्वं न प्रतिबुध्यसे ॥५॥
5. eṣāṃ vilapitaṃ kṛcchramaṅgadasya ca śocataḥ ,
mama cemāṃ giraṃ śrutvā kiṃ tvaṃ na pratibudhyase.

5. Why do you not awaken, having heard the piteous lamentation of these (bears and monkeys), and of Angada who is grieving, as well as these words of mine?
इदं तच्छूरशयनं यत्र शेषे हतो युधि ।
शायिता निहता यत्र त्वयैव रिपवः पुरा ॥६॥
6. idaṃ tacchūraśayanaṃ yatra śeṣe hato yudhi ,
śāyitā nihatā yatra tvayaiva ripavaḥ purā.
6. idam tat śūraśayanam yatra śeṣe hataḥ yudhi
śāyitāḥ nihatāḥ yatra tvayā eva ripavaḥ purā

6. This is that warrior's deathbed where you lie slain in battle. It is the very place where your enemies were previously laid low and killed by you.
विशुद्धसत्त्वाभिजन प्रिययुद्ध मम प्रिय ।
मामनाथां विहायैकां गतस्त्वमसि मानद ॥७॥
7. viśuddhasattvābhijana priyayuddha mama priya ,
māmanāthāṃ vihāyaikāṃ gatastvamasi mānada.

mām anāthām vihāya ekām gataḥ tvam asi mānada

7. O my beloved, of pure nature (sattva) and noble lineage, O lover of battle, O bestower of honor, you have gone, leaving me, helpless and alone.
शूराय न प्रदातव्या कन्या खलु विपश्चिता ।
शूरभार्यां हतां पश्य सद्यो मां विधवां कृताम् ॥८॥
8. śūrāya na pradātavyā kanyā khalu vipaścitā ,
śūrabhāryāṃ hatāṃ paśya sadyo māṃ vidhavāṃ kṛtām.

8. Indeed, a wise person should not give their daughter to a warrior. See me, a warrior's wife, immediately widowed and rendered as if slain myself.
अवभग्नश्च मे मानो भग्ना मे शाश्वती गतिः ।
अगाधे च निमग्नास्मि विपुले शोकसागरे ॥९॥
9. avabhagnaśca me māno bhagnā me śāśvatī gatiḥ ,
agādhe ca nimagnāsmi vipule śokasāgare.
9. avabhagnaḥ ca me mānaḥ bhagnā me śāśvatī
gatiḥ agādhe ca nimagnā asmi vipule śokasāgare
9. me mānaḥ ca avabhagnaḥ me śāśvatī gatiḥ bhagnā

9. My pride (māna) is completely shattered, and my eternal refuge is broken. I am plunged into a vast and unfathomable ocean of sorrow.
अश्मसारमयं नूनमिदं मे हृदयं दृढम् ।
भर्तारं निहतं दृष्ट्वा यन्नाद्य शतधा गतम् ॥१०॥
10. aśmasāramayaṃ nūnamidaṃ me hṛdayaṃ dṛḍham ,
bhartāraṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā yannādya śatadhā gatam.
10. aśmasāramayam nūnam idam me hṛdayam dṛḍham
bhartāram nihatam dṛṣṭvā yat na adya śatadhā gatam
10. nūnam idam me hṛdayam aśmasāramayam dṛḍham yat
nihatam bhartāram dṛṣṭvā adya śatadhā na gatam
10. Surely, this heart of mine is made of iron and is so firm, that even after seeing my husband killed, it has not yet burst into a hundred pieces.
सुहृच्चैव हि भर्ता च प्रकृत्या च मम प्रियः ।
आहवे च पराक्रान्तः शूरः पञ्चत्वमागतः ॥११॥
11. suhṛccaiva hi bhartā ca prakṛtyā ca mama priyaḥ ,
āhave ca parākrāntaḥ śūraḥ pañcatvamāgataḥ.
11. suhṛt ca eva hi bhartā ca prakṛtyā ca mama priyaḥ
āhave ca parākrāntaḥ śūraḥ pañcatvam āgataḥ
11. hi mama suhṛt ca eva bhartā ca prakṛtyā ca priyaḥ
āhave ca parākrāntaḥ śūraḥ pañcatvam āgataḥ
11. He was indeed my friend and husband, naturally dear to me. And in battle, he was valiant and a hero, who has now met his end.
पतिहीना तु या नारी कामं भवतु पुत्रिणी ।
धनधान्यैः सुपूर्णापि विधवेत्युच्यते बुधैः ॥१२॥
12. patihīnā tu yā nārī kāmaṃ bhavatu putriṇī ,
dhanadhānyaiḥ supūrṇāpi vidhavetyucyate budhaiḥ.
12. patihīnā tu yā nārī kāmam bhavatu putriṇī
dhanadhānyaiḥ supūrṇā api vidhavā iti ucyate budhaiḥ
12. tu yā nārī patihīnā kāmam putriṇī bhavatu

12. A woman who is without a husband, even if she has sons and is richly endowed with wealth and grain, is nevertheless called a widow by the wise.
स्वगात्रप्रभवे वीर शेषे रुधिरमण्डले ।
कृमिरागपरिस्तोमे त्वमेवं शयने यथा ॥१३॥
13. svagātraprabhave vīra śeṣe rudhiramaṇḍale ,
kṛmirāgaparistome tvamevaṃ śayane yathā.

13. O hero, you lie thus, as if in a bed, in this remaining pool of blood that arose from your own body, a covering reddened as if by worms.
रेणुशोणितसंवीतं गात्रं तव समन्ततः ।
परिरब्धुं न शक्नोमि भुजाभ्यां प्लवगर्षभ ॥१४॥
14. reṇuśoṇitasaṃvītaṃ gātraṃ tava samantataḥ ,
parirabdhuṃ na śaknomi bhujābhyāṃ plavagarṣabha.
14. reṇuśoṇitasaṃvītam gātram tava samantataḥ
parirabdhum na śaknomi bhujābhyām plavagarṣabha
14. plavagarṣabha tava reṇuśoṇitasaṃvītam samantataḥ
gātram bhujābhyām parirabdhum na śaknomi
14. O chief of monkeys, I cannot embrace your body, which is entirely covered in dust and blood, with my arms.
कृतकृत्यो ऽद्य सुग्रीवो वैरे ऽस्मिन्नतिदारुणे ।
यस्य रामविमुक्तेन हृतमेकेषुणा भयम् ॥१५॥
15. kṛtakṛtyo'dya sugrīvo vaire'sminnatidāruṇe ,
yasya rāmavimuktena hṛtamekeṣuṇā bhayam.
15. kṛtakṛtyaḥ adya sugrīvaḥ vaire asmin atidāruṇe
yasya rāmavimuktena hṛtam ekeṣuṇā bhayam
15. adya sugrīvaḥ asmin atidāruṇe vaire kṛtakṛtyaḥ
yasya bhayam rāmavimuktena ekeṣuṇā hṛtam
15. Today, Sugrīva has achieved his purpose in this exceedingly fierce rivalry. His fear was removed by a single arrow discharged by Rāma.
शरेण हृदि लग्नेन गात्रसंस्पर्शने तव ।
वार्यामि त्वां निरीक्षन्ती त्वयि पञ्चत्वमागते ॥१६॥
16. śareṇa hṛdi lagnena gātrasaṃsparśane tava ,
vāryāmi tvāṃ nirīkṣantī tvayi pañcatvamāgate.
16. śareṇa hṛdi lagnena gātrasaṃsparśane tava
vāryāmi tvām nirīkṣantī tvayi pañcatvam āgate
16. śareṇa hṛdi lagnena tvayi pañcatvam āgate,
tvām nirīkṣantī,

16. With the arrow lodged in your heart, as you lie in the state of death (pañcatva), I, looking upon you, restrain myself from touching your body.
उद्बबर्ह शरं नीलस्तस्य गात्रगतं तदा ।
गिरिगह्वरसंलीनं दीप्तमाशीविषं यथा ॥१७॥
17. udbabarha śaraṃ nīlastasya gātragataṃ tadā ,
girigahvarasaṃlīnaṃ dīptamāśīviṣaṃ yathā.
17. udbabarha śaram nīlaḥ tasya gātragatam tadā
girigahvarasaṃlīnam dīptam āśīviṣam yathā
17. tadā nīlaḥ tasya gātragatam śaram udbabarha,
yathā girigahvarasaṃlīnam dīptam āśīviṣam
17. Then Nīla pulled out that arrow, which was lodged in Vāli's body, just as one might pull out a fiery poisonous snake (āśīviṣa) hidden within a mountain cave.
तस्य निष्कृष्यमाणस्य बाणस्य च बभौ द्युतिः ।
अस्तमस्तकसंरुद्धो रश्मिर्दिनकरादिव ॥१८॥
18. tasya niṣkṛṣyamāṇasya bāṇasya ca babhau dyutiḥ ,
astamastakasaṃruddho raśmirdinakarādiva.
18. tasya niṣkṛṣyamāṇasya bāṇasya ca babhau dyutiḥ
astamastakasaṃruddhaḥ raśmiḥ dinakarāt iva
18. tasya bāṇasya niṣkṛṣyamāṇasya dyutiḥ ca babhau

18. The radiance of the arrow, as it was being extracted from him, shone like a ray of sunlight obstructed by the summit of the western mountain.
पेतुः क्षतजधारास्तु व्रणेभ्यस्तस्य सर्वशः ।
ताम्रगैरिकसंपृक्ता धारा इव धराधरात् ॥१९॥
19. petuḥ kṣatajadhārāstu vraṇebhyastasya sarvaśaḥ ,
tāmragairikasaṃpṛktā dhārā iva dharādharāt.
19. petuḥ kṣatajadhārāḥ tu vraṇebhyaḥ tasya sarvaśaḥ
tāmragairikasaṃpṛktāḥ dhārāḥ iva dharādharāt
19. tasya vraṇebhyaḥ sarvaśaḥ kṣatajadhārāḥ tu petuḥ
tāmragairikasaṃpṛktāḥ dhārāḥ iva dharādharāt
19. Indeed, streams of blood fell from his wounds everywhere, like streams mixed with red ochre falling from a mountain.
अवकीर्णं विमार्जन्ती भर्तारं रणरेणुना ।
अस्रैर्नयनजैः शूरं सिषेचास्त्रसमाहतम् ॥२०॥
20. avakīrṇaṃ vimārjantī bhartāraṃ raṇareṇunā ,
asrairnayanajaiḥ śūraṃ siṣecāstrasamāhatam.
20. avakīrṇam vimārjantī bhartāram raṇareṇunā
asraiḥ nayanajaiḥ śūram siṣeca astrasamāhatam
20. vimārjantī raṇareṇunā avakīrṇam bhartāram
nayanajaiḥ asraiḥ śūram astrasamāhatam siṣeca
20. Wiping off the battle dust that covered her husband, the hero who was struck by weapons, she moistened him with tears born from her eyes.
रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गं दृष्ट्वा विनिहतं पतिम् ।
उवाच तारा पिङ्गाक्षं पुत्रमङ्गदमङ्गना ॥२१॥
21. rudhirokṣitasarvāṅgaṃ dṛṣṭvā vinihataṃ patim ,
uvāca tārā piṅgākṣaṃ putramaṅgadamaṅganā.
21. rudhiroktasarvāṅgam dṛṣṭvā vinihatam patim
uvāca tārā piṅgākṣam putram aṅgadam aṅganā
21. aṅganā tārā rudhiroktasarvāṅgam vinihatam
patim dṛṣṭvā piṅgākṣam putram aṅgadam uvāca
21. Having seen her slain husband, whose entire body was drenched in blood, the lady Tārā spoke to her tawny-eyed son, Aṅgada.
अवस्थां पश्चिमां पश्य पितुः पुत्र सुदारुणाम् ।
संप्रसक्तस्य वैरस्य गतो ऽन्तः पापकर्मणा ॥२२॥
22. avasthāṃ paścimāṃ paśya pituḥ putra sudāruṇām ,
saṃprasaktasya vairasya gato'ntaḥ pāpakarmaṇā.
22. avasthām paścimām paśya pituḥ putra sudāruṇām
saṃprasaktasya vairasya gataḥ antaḥ pāpakarmaṇā
22. putra pituḥ sudāruṇām paścimām avasthām paśya
pāpakarmaṇā saṃprasaktasya vairasya antaḥ gataḥ
22. Son, behold your father's dreadful final condition. The deeply ingrained enmity, brought about by sinful actions, has reached its end.
बालसूर्योदयतनुं प्रयान्तं यमसादनम् ।
अभिवादय राजानं पितरं पुत्र मानदम् ॥२३॥
23. bālasūryodayatanuṃ prayāntaṃ yamasādanam ,
abhivādaya rājānaṃ pitaraṃ putra mānadam.
23. bālasūryodayatanum prayāntam yamasādanam
abhivādaya rājānam pitaram putra mānadam
23. putra bālasūryodayatanum yamasādanam
prayāntam mānadam pitaram rājānam abhivādaya
23. Son, salute your father, the honorable king, whose body resembles the rising sun, as he departs to the abode of Yama.
एवमुक्तः समुत्थाय जग्राह चरणौ पितुः ।
भुजाभ्यां पीनवृताभ्यामङ्गदो ऽहमिति ब्रुवन् ॥२४॥
24. evamuktaḥ samutthāya jagrāha caraṇau pituḥ ,
bhujābhyāṃ pīnavṛtābhyāmaṅgado'hamiti bruvan.
24. evamuktaḥ samutthāya jagrāha caraṇau pituḥ
bhujābhyām pīnavṛtābhyām aṅgadaḥ aham iti bruvan
24. evam uktaḥ (saḥ) samutthāya aṅgadaḥ aham iti bruvan
pīnavṛtābhyām bhujābhyām pituḥ caraṇau jagrāha
24. Thus addressed, he rose up and grasped his father's feet with his strong, thick arms, saying, 'I am Angada'.
अभिवादयमानं त्वामङ्गदं त्वं यथापुरा ।
दीर्घायुर्भव पुत्रेति किमर्थं नाभिभाषसे ॥२५॥
25. abhivādayamānaṃ tvāmaṅgadaṃ tvaṃ yathāpurā ,
dīrghāyurbhava putreti kimarthaṃ nābhibhāṣase.
25. abhivādayamānam tvām aṅgadam tvam yathāpurā
dīrghāyuḥ bhava putra iti kimartham na abhibhāṣase
25. tvam yathāpurā tvām abhivādayamānam aṅgadam putra
dīrghāyuḥ bhava iti kimartham na abhibhāṣase
25. Why do you not address Angada, who is saluting you, and say 'Be long-lived, O son,' as you did formerly?
अहं पुत्रसहाया त्वामुपासे गतचेतनम् ।
सिंहेन निहतं सद्यो गौः सवत्सेव गोवृषम् ॥२६॥
26. ahaṃ putrasahāyā tvāmupāse gatacetanam ,
siṃhena nihataṃ sadyo gauḥ savatseva govṛṣam.
26. aham putrasahāyā tvām upāse gatacetanam
siṃhena nihatam sadyaḥ gauḥ savatsā iva govṛṣam
26. aham putrasahāyā gatacetanam tvām upāse
savatsā gauḥ iva siṃhena nihatam govṛṣam sadyaḥ
26. I, accompanied by my son, attend to you who are lifeless, just as a cow with her calf would immediately approach a bull instantly slain by a lion.
इष्ट्वा संग्रामयज्ञेन नानाप्रहरणाम्भसा ।
अस्मिन्नवभृथे स्नातः कथं पत्न्या मया विना ॥२७॥
27. iṣṭvā saṃgrāmayajñena nānāpraharaṇāmbhasā ,
asminnavabhṛthe snātaḥ kathaṃ patnyā mayā vinā.
27. iṣṭvā saṅgrāmayajñena nānāpraharaṇāmbhasā
asmin avabhṛthe snātaḥ katham patnyā mayā vinā
27. nānāpraharaṇāmbhasā saṅgrāmayajñena iṣṭvā,
asmin avabhṛthe snātaḥ (tvam),
mayā patnyā vinā katham (asi)?
27. Having concluded the war-ritual (yajña) with the ablution-waters of various weapons, how can you undergo this final purification bath (avabhṛtha) without me, your wife?
या दत्ता देवराजेन तव तुष्टेन संयुगे ।
शातकुम्भमयीं मालां तां ते पश्यामि नेह किम् ॥२८॥
28. yā dattā devarājena tava tuṣṭena saṃyuge ,
śātakumbhamayīṃ mālāṃ tāṃ te paśyāmi neha kim.
28. yā dattā devarājena tava tuṣṭena saṃyuge
śātakumbhamayīm mālām tām te paśyāmi na iha kim
28. devraājena tuṣṭena saṃyuge tava yā śātakumbhamayīm mālām dattā,
tāṃ te iha na paśyāmi kim?
28. Why do I not see here that golden garland of yours which was given to you by the delighted king of gods (Indra) in battle?
राजश्रीर्न जहाति त्वां गतासुमपि मानद ।
सूर्यस्यावर्तमानस्य शैलराजमिव प्रभा ॥२९॥
29. rājaśrīrna jahāti tvāṃ gatāsumapi mānada ,
sūryasyāvartamānasya śailarājamiva prabhā.
29. rājaśrīḥ na jahāti tvām gataasum api mānada
sūryasya āvartamānasya śailarājam iva prabhā
29. mānada! rājaśrīḥ tvām gataasum api na jahāti prabhā āvartamānasya sūryasya śailarājam iva (na jahāti).
29. O giver of honor, royal glory does not abandon you, even though you are lifeless, just as the radiance of the setting sun does not abandon the king of mountains.
न मे वचः पथ्यमिदं त्वया कृतं न चास्मि शक्ता हि निवारणे तव ।
हता सपुत्रास्मि हतेन संयुगे सह त्वया श्रीर्विजहाति मामिह ॥३०॥
30. na me vacaḥ pathyamidaṃ tvayā kṛtaṃ na cāsmi śaktā hi nivāraṇe tava ,
hatā saputrāsmi hatena saṃyuge saha tvayā śrīrvijahāti māmiha.
30. na me vacaḥ pathyam idam tvayā kṛtam
na ca asmi śaktā hi nivāraṇe tava
hatā saputrā asmi hatena saṃyuge
saha tvayā śrīḥ vijahāti mām iha
30. tvayā idam me pathyam vacaḥ na kṛtam
ca tava nivāraṇe śaktā hi na asmi
saṃyuge hatena saputrā hatā asmi
saha tvayā śrīḥ mām iha vijahāti
30. This wholesome advice of mine was not heeded by you. Indeed, I was not able to prevent your actions. I am now ruined, along with my sons, by the one who was killed in battle. Now, along with you, all prosperity (śrī) abandons me here.
