सर्वापूर्वमियं येषामासीत् कृत्स्ना वसुंधरा ।
प्रजापतिमुपादाय नृपाणां जयशालिनाम् ॥१॥

1. This entire earth, completely and without rival, belonged to those victorious kings whose lineage began with Prajāpati.

2. yeṣāṃ sa sagaro nāma sāgaro yena khānitaḥ ,
ṣaṣṭiḥ putrasahasrāṇi yaṃ yāntaṃ paryavārayan.

2. Among those kings, there was one named Sagara, by whom the ocean was dug. Sixty thousand sons surrounded him as he proceeded.
इक्ष्वाकूणामिदं तेषां राज्ञां वंशे महात्मनाम् ।
महदुत्पन्नमाख्यानं रामायणमिति श्रुतम् ॥३॥
3. ikṣvākūṇāmidaṃ teṣāṃ rājñāṃ vaṃśe mahātmanām ,
mahadutpannamākhyānaṃ rāmāyaṇamiti śrutam.

mahat utpannnam ākhyānam rāmāyaṇam iti śrutam

3. This great narrative, renowned as the Rāmāyaṇa (Rāmāyaṇa), arose in the lineage of those great-souled (mahātman) Ikṣvāku kings.
तदिदं वर्तयिष्यामि सर्वं निखिलमादितः ।
धर्मकामार्थसहितं श्रोतव्यमनसूयया ॥४॥
4. tadidaṃ vartayiṣyāmi sarvaṃ nikhilamāditaḥ ,
dharmakāmārthasahitaṃ śrotavyamanasūyayā.
4. tat idam vartayiṣyāmi sarvam nikhilam āditaḥ
dharmakāmārthasahitam śrotavyam anasūyayā
4. aham idam tat sarvam nikhilam dharmakāmārthasahitam āditaḥ vartayiṣyāmi,

4. Therefore, I will narrate this entire and complete story from the beginning. It encompasses natural law (dharma), legitimate desire (kāma), and purpose (artha), and it should be listened to without envy.
कोसलो नाम मुदितः स्फीतो जनपदो महान् ।
निविष्टः सरयूतीरे प्रभूतधनधान्यवान् ॥५॥
5. kosalo nāma muditaḥ sphīto janapado mahān ,
niviṣṭaḥ sarayūtīre prabhūtadhanadhānyavān.

5. There was a great and prosperous country (janapada) named Kosala, full of joy, situated on the banks of the Sarayu river, and abundant in wealth and grain.
अयोध्या नाम नगरी तत्रासील् लोकविश्रुता ।
मनुना मानवेन्द्रेण या पुरी निर्मिता स्वयम् ॥६॥
6. ayodhyā nāma nagarī tatrāsīl lokaviśrutā ,
manunā mānavendreṇa yā purī nirmitā svayam.

manunā mānavendreṇa yā purī nirmitā svayam
6. There was a city named Ayodhya, renowned throughout the world. This city was personally built by Manu, the lord of humankind.
आयता दश च द्वे च योजनानि महापुरी ।
श्रीमती त्रीणि विस्तीर्णा सुविभक्तमहापथा ॥७॥
7. āyatā daśa ca dve ca yojanāni mahāpurī ,
śrīmatī trīṇi vistīrṇā suvibhaktamahāpathā.

śrīmatī trīṇi vistīrṇā suvibhaktamahāpathā
7. This great city (mahāpurī) was twelve yojanas long and three yojanas wide, glorious and prosperous, with well-divided grand roads.
राजमार्गेण महता सुविभक्तेन शोभिता ।
मुक्तपुष्पावकीर्णेन जलसिक्तेन नित्यशः ॥८॥
8. rājamārgeṇa mahatā suvibhaktena śobhitā ,
muktapuṣpāvakīrṇena jalasiktena nityaśaḥ.

8. It was adorned by grand, well-arranged royal roads, which were perpetually sprinkled with water and strewn with scattered flowers.
तां तु राजा दशरथो महाराष्ट्रविवर्धनः ।
पुरीमावासयामास दिवि देवपतिर्यथा ॥९॥
9. tāṃ tu rājā daśaratho mahārāṣṭravivardhanaḥ ,
purīmāvāsayāmāsa divi devapatiryathā.
9. tām tu rājā daśarathaḥ mahārāṣṭravivardhanaḥ
purīm āvāsāyāmāsa divi devapatiḥ yathā

9. King Dasharatha, who augmented his great kingdom, established that city, just as the lord of the gods (Indra) established his city in heaven.
कपाटतोरणवतीं सुविभक्तान्तरापणाम् ।
सर्वयन्त्रायुधवतीमुपेतां सर्वशिल्पिभिः ॥१०॥
10. kapāṭatoraṇavatīṃ suvibhaktāntarāpaṇām ,
sarvayantrāyudhavatīmupetāṃ sarvaśilpibhiḥ.

10. That city, equipped with strong gates and archways, having well-arranged inner markets, possessing all types of machines and weapons, and inhabited by all kinds of artisans.
सूतमागधसंबाधां श्रीमतीमतुलप्रभाम् ।
उच्चाट्टालध्वजवतीं शतघ्नीशतसंकुलाम् ॥११॥
11. sūtamāgadhasaṃbādhāṃ śrīmatīmatulaprabhām ,
uccāṭṭāladhvajavatīṃ śataghnīśatasaṃkulām.

uccāṭṭāladhvajavatīm śataghnīśatasaṃkulām

11. It was bustling with bards and panegyrists, glorious and of unmatched splendor, adorned with high watchtowers and flags, and filled with hundreds of missile-weapons (śataghnī).
वधूनाटकसङ्घैश्च संयुक्तां सर्वतः पुरीम् ।
उद्यानाम्रवणोपेतां महतीं सालमेखलाम् ॥१२॥
12. vadhūnāṭakasaṅghaiśca saṃyuktāṃ sarvataḥ purīm ,
udyānāmravaṇopetāṃ mahatīṃ sālamekhalām.
12. vadhūnāṭakasaṅghaiḥ ca saṃyuktām sarvataḥ
purīm udyānāmravaṇopetām mahatīm sālamakhalām
12. ca sarvataḥ vadhūnāṭakasaṅghaiḥ saṃyuktām

12. Furthermore, the city was filled everywhere with groups of female dancers and performers, adorned with gardens and mango groves, immense, and encircled by a girdle-like rampart.
दुर्गगम्भीरपरिखां दुर्गामन्यैर्दुरासदाम् ।
वाजिवारणसंपूर्णां गोभिरुष्ट्रैः खरैस्तथा ॥१३॥
13. durgagambhīraparikhāṃ durgāmanyairdurāsadām ,
vājivāraṇasaṃpūrṇāṃ gobhiruṣṭraiḥ kharaistathā.

vājivāraṇasaṃpūrṇām gobhiḥ uṣṭraiḥ kharaiḥ tathā

13. It possessed deep, formidable moats, making it impregnable and difficult for others to approach. It was teeming with horses, elephants, as well as cows, camels, and donkeys.
सामन्तराजसङ्घैश्च बलिकर्मभिरावृताम् ।
नानादेशनिवासैश्च वणिग्भिरुपशोभिताम् ॥१४॥
14. sāmantarājasaṅghaiśca balikarmabhirāvṛtām ,
nānādeśanivāsaiśca vaṇigbhirupaśobhitām.
14. sāmantarājasaṅghaiḥ ca balikarmabhiḥ āvṛtām
nānādeśanivāsaiḥ ca vaṇigbhiḥ upaśobhitām

14. It was attended by multitudes of feudatory kings and their tribute (bali), and beautified by merchants residing from various countries.
प्रसादै रत्नविकृतैः पर्वतैरुपशोभिताम् ।
कूटागारैश्च संपूर्णामिन्द्रस्येवामरावतीम् ॥१५॥
15. prasādai ratnavikṛtaiḥ parvatairupaśobhitām ,
kūṭāgāraiśca saṃpūrṇāmindrasyevāmarāvatīm.
15. prasādaiḥ ratnavikṛtaiḥ parvataiḥ upaśobhitām
kūṭāgāraiḥ ca saṃpūrṇām indrasya iva amarāvatīm

15. It was adorned with jewel-studded palaces and towering structures (parvata-like), and filled with magnificent turreted mansions, resembling Indra's city, Amaravati.
चित्रामष्टापदाकारां वरनारीगणैर्युताम् ।
सर्वरत्नसमाकीर्णां विमानगृहशोभिताम् ॥१६॥
16. citrāmaṣṭāpadākārāṃ varanārīgaṇairyutām ,
sarvaratnasamākīrṇāṃ vimānagṛhaśobhitām.
16. citrām aṣṭāpadākārām varanārīgaṇaiḥ yutām
sarvaratnasamākīrṇām vimānagṛhaśobhitām
16. citrām aṣṭāpadākārām varanārīgaṇaiḥ yutām

16. It was wonderfully variegated, designed like an eight-sectioned grid, filled with groups of excellent women, strewn with all kinds of jewels, and beautified by houses resembling celestial mansions.
गृहगाढामविच्छिद्रां समभूमौ निवेशिताम् ।
शालितण्डुलसंपूर्णामिक्षुकाण्डरसोदकाम् ॥१७॥
17. gṛhagāḍhāmavicchidrāṃ samabhūmau niveśitām ,
śālitaṇḍulasaṃpūrṇāmikṣukāṇḍarasodakām.

śālitaṇḍulasampūrṇām ikṣukāṇḍarasodakām

17. Firmly built with houses, unbroken and continuous, established on level ground, filled with rice and grain, and with water as sweet as sugarcane juice.
दुन्दुभीभिर्मृदङ्गैश्च वीणाभिः पणवैस्तथा ।
नादितां भृशमत्यर्थं पृथिव्यां तामनुत्तमाम् ॥१८॥
18. dundubhībhirmṛdaṅgaiśca vīṇābhiḥ paṇavaistathā ,
nāditāṃ bhṛśamatyarthaṃ pṛthivyāṃ tāmanuttamām.
18. dundubhībhiḥ mṛdaṅgaiḥ ca vīṇābhiḥ paṇavaiḥ tathā
nāditām bhṛśam atyartham pṛthivyām tām anuttamām
18. tām anuttamām pṛthivyām dundubhībhiḥ mṛdaṅgaiḥ ca
vīṇābhiḥ paṇavaiḥ tathā bhṛśam atyartham nāditām
18. Reverberating exceedingly with the sounds of war-drums, mṛdaṅgas, vīṇās, and paṇavas, that supreme (city) on earth.
विमानमिव सिद्धानां तपसाधिगतं दिवि ।
सुनिवेशितवेश्मान्तां नरोत्तमसमावृताम् ॥१९॥
19. vimānamiva siddhānāṃ tapasādhigataṃ divi ,
suniveśitaveśmāntāṃ narottamasamāvṛtām.
19. vimānam iva siddhānām tapasā adhigatam divi
suniveśitaveśmāntām narottamasamāvṛtām
19. divi tapasā adhigatam siddhānām vimānam
iva suniveśitaveśmāntām narottamasamāvṛtām
19. It was like a celestial palace (vimāna) of the perfected beings (siddhas), attained in heaven through their asceticism (tapas); with its houses well-arranged and surrounded by the best of men.
ये च बाणैर्न विध्यन्ति विविक्तमपरापरम् ।
शब्दवेध्यं च विततं लघुहस्ता विशारदाः ॥२०॥
20. ye ca bāṇairna vidhyanti viviktamaparāparam ,
śabdavedhyaṃ ca vitataṃ laghuhastā viśāradāḥ.
20. ye ca bāṇaiḥ na vidhyanti viviktam aparāparam
śabdavedhyam ca vitatam laghuhastāḥ viśāradāḥ
20. ye ca laghuhastāḥ viśāradāḥ bāṇaiḥ viviktam
aparāparam śabdavedhyam ca vitatam na vidhyanti
20. And those who are swift-handed (laghuhastāḥ) and skilled (viśāradāḥ) do not fail to pierce with arrows distinct and successive targets, and even distant targets that are located by sound (śabdavedhya).
सिंहव्याघ्रवराहाणां मत्तानां नदतां वने ।
हन्तारो निशितैः शस्त्रैर्बलाद्बाहुबलैरपि ॥२१॥
21. siṃhavyāghravarāhāṇāṃ mattānāṃ nadatāṃ vane ,
hantāro niśitaiḥ śastrairbalādbāhubalairapi.
21. siṃhavyāghravarāhāṇām mattānām nadatām vane
hantāraḥ niśitaiḥ śastraiḥ balāt bāhubalaiḥ api
21. hantāraḥ siṃhavyāghravarāhāṇām mattānām nadatām
vane niśitaiḥ śastraiḥ balāt bāhubalaiḥ api
21. They were slayers of fierce lions, tigers, and boars roaring in the forest, killing them forcefully with sharp weapons and even with the strength of their own arms.
तादृशानां सहस्रैस्तामभिपूर्णां महारथैः ।
पुरीमावासयामास राजा दशरथस्तदा ॥२२॥
22. tādṛśānāṃ sahasraistāmabhipūrṇāṃ mahārathaiḥ ,
purīmāvāsayāmāsa rājā daśarathastadā.
22. tādṛśānām sahasraiḥ tām abhipūrṇām mahārathaiḥ
purīm āvāsayāmāsa rājā daśarathaḥ tadā
22. tadā rājā daśarathaḥ āvāsayāmāsa tām purīm
abhipūrṇām tādṛśānām sahasraiḥ mahārathaiḥ
22. King Daśaratha then populated that city (purī), which was filled with thousands of such (warriors) and great charioteers.
तामग्निमद्भिर्गुणवद्भिरावृतां द्विजोत्तमैर्वेदषडङ्गपारगैः ।
सहस्रदैः सत्यरतैर्महात्मभिर्महर्षिकल्पैरृषिभिश्च केवलैः ॥२३॥
23. tāmagnimadbhirguṇavadbhirāvṛtāṃ dvijottamairvedaṣaḍaṅgapāragaiḥ ,
sahasradaiḥ satyaratairmahātmabhirmaharṣikalpairṛṣibhiśca kevalaiḥ.
23. tām agnimadbhiḥ guṇavadbhiḥ āvṛtām
dvijottamaiḥ vedaṣaḍaṅgapāragaiḥ
sahasradaiḥ satyarataiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
maharṣikalpaiḥ ṛṣibhiḥ ca kevalaiḥ
23. tām āvṛtām dvijottamaiḥ agnimadbhiḥ
guṇavadbhiḥ vedaṣaḍaṅgapāragaiḥ ca
sahasradaiḥ satyarataiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
maharṣikalpaiḥ ca kevalaiḥ ṛṣibhiḥ
23. That city was inhabited by excellent twice-born (dvijottama) individuals who maintained sacred fires, were virtuous, and had mastered the Vedas and their six auxiliary branches (aṅgas). It was also inhabited by those who were extremely generous, devoted to truth, great-souled (mahātman), resembling great sages (maharṣi), and by truly wise sages.
