राघवेणाभये दत्ते संनतो रावणानुजः ।
खात् पपातावनिं हृष्टो भक्तैरनुचरैः सह ॥१॥
1. rāghaveṇābhaye datte saṃnato rāvaṇānujaḥ ,
khāt papātāvaniṃ hṛṣṭo bhaktairanucaraiḥ saha.

1. When freedom from fear was granted by Rāghava, the humble younger brother of Rāvaṇa, overjoyed, descended from the sky to the earth along with his devoted followers.
स तु रामस्य धर्मात्मा निपपात विभीषणः ।
पादयोः शरणान्वेषी चतुर्भिः सह राक्षसैः ॥२॥
2. sa tu rāmasya dharmātmā nipapāta vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
pādayoḥ śaraṇānveṣī caturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ.
2. saḥ tu rāmasya dharma-ātmā nipapāta vibhīṣaṇaḥ
pādayoḥ śaraṇa-anveṣī caturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ

caturbhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ saha rāmasya pādayoḥ nipapāta
2. But that virtuous (dharma-ātman) Vibhīṣaṇa, seeking refuge, fell at Rāma's feet along with four rākṣasas.
अब्रवीच्च तदा रामं वाक्यं तत्र विभीषणः ।
धर्मयुक्तं च युक्तं च साम्प्रतं संप्रहर्षणम् ॥३॥
3. abravīcca tadā rāmaṃ vākyaṃ tatra vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
dharmayuktaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca sāmprataṃ saṃpraharṣaṇam.
3. abravīt ca tadā rāmam vākyam tatra vibhīṣaṇaḥ
dharma-yuktam ca yuktam ca sāmpratam saṃpraharṣaṇam
3. tatra vibhīṣaṇaḥ tadā rāmam abravīt ca vākyam
dharma-yuktam ca yuktam ca sāmpratam saṃpraharṣaṇam
3. And there, Vibhīṣaṇa then addressed Rāma with words that were full of righteousness (dharma), appropriate, and presently delightful.
अनुजो रावणस्याहं तेन चास्म्यवमानितः ।
भवन्तं सर्वभूतानां शरण्यं शरणं गतः ॥४॥
4. anujo rāvaṇasyāhaṃ tena cāsmyavamānitaḥ ,
bhavantaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ śaraṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ.
4. anujaḥ rāvaṇasya aham tena ca asmi avamānitaḥ
bhavantam sarva-bhūtānām śaraṇyam śaraṇam gataḥ
4. aham rāvaṇasya anujaḥ tena ca avamānitaḥ asmi
sarva-bhūtānām śaraṇyam bhavantam śaraṇam gataḥ
4. "I am Rāvaṇa's younger brother, and I have been dishonored by him. I have come seeking refuge with you, who are the protector for all beings."
परित्यक्ता मया लङ्का मित्राणि च धनानि च ।
भवद्गतं मे राज्यं च जीवितं च सुखानि च ॥५॥
5. parityaktā mayā laṅkā mitrāṇi ca dhanāni ca ,
bhavadgataṃ me rājyaṃ ca jīvitaṃ ca sukhāni ca.
5. parityaktā mayā laṅkā mitrāṇi ca dhanāni ca
bhavat-gatam me rājyam ca jīvitam ca sukhāni ca
5. mayā laṅkā parityaktā mitrāṇi ca dhanāni ca (parityaktāni).

5. "Laṅkā has been abandoned by me, as have friends and wealth. My kingdom, my life, and my joys are now dependent on you."
राक्षसानां वधे साह्यं लङ्कायाश्च प्रधर्षणे ।
करिष्यामि यथाप्राणं प्रवेक्ष्यामि च वाहिनीम् ॥६॥
6. rākṣasānāṃ vadhe sāhyaṃ laṅkāyāśca pradharṣaṇe ,
kariṣyāmi yathāprāṇaṃ pravekṣyāmi ca vāhinīm.
6. rākṣasānām vadhe sāhyam laṅkāyāḥ ca pradharṣaṇe
kariṣyāmi yathāprāṇam pravekṣyāmi ca vāhinīm
6. rākṣasānām vadhe laṅkāyāḥ ca pradharṣaṇe sāhyam
yathāprāṇam kariṣyāmi ca vāhinīm pravekṣyāmi
6. I will provide assistance in the slaying of the demons and in the assault on Laṅkā, with all my might, and I will enter the army.
इति ब्रुवाणं रामस्तु परिष्वज्य विभीषणम् ।
अब्रवील् लक्ष्मणं प्रीतः समुद्राज्जलमानय ॥७॥
7. iti bruvāṇaṃ rāmastu pariṣvajya vibhīṣaṇam ,
abravīl lakṣmaṇaṃ prītaḥ samudrājjalamānaya.
7. iti bruvāṇam rāmaḥ tu pariṣvajya vibhīṣaṇam
abravīt lakṣmaṇam prītaḥ samudrāt jalam ānaya
7. rāmaḥ tu prītaḥ iti bruvāṇam vibhīṣaṇam

7. Rāma, pleased, having embraced Vibhīṣaṇa who was speaking thus, said to Lakṣmaṇa: 'Bring water from the ocean.'
तेन चेमं महाप्राज्ञमभिषिञ्च विभीषणम् ।
राजानं रक्षसां क्षिप्रं प्रसन्ने मयि मानद ॥८॥
8. tena cemaṃ mahāprājñamabhiṣiñca vibhīṣaṇam ,
rājānaṃ rakṣasāṃ kṣipraṃ prasanne mayi mānada.
8. tena ca imam mahāprājñam abhiṣiñca vibhīṣaṇam
rājānam rakṣasām kṣipram prasanne mayi mānada
8. mānada ca mayi prasanne tena imam mahāprājñam
vibhīṣaṇam rakṣasām rājānam kṣipram abhiṣiñca
8. O giver of honor, with that water, quickly anoint this greatly wise Vibhīṣaṇa as king of the demons, for I am now pleased.
एवमुक्तस्तु सौमित्रिरभ्यषिञ्चद्विभीषणम् ।
मध्ये वानरमुख्यानां राजानं रामशासनात् ॥९॥
9. evamuktastu saumitrirabhyaṣiñcadvibhīṣaṇam ,
madhye vānaramukhyānāṃ rājānaṃ rāmaśāsanāt.
9. evam uktaḥ tu saumitriḥ abhyasiñcat vibhīṣaṇam
madhye vānarāmukhyānām rājānam rāmaśāsanāt
9. evam uktaḥ tu saumitriḥ rāmaśāsanāt vānarāmukhyānām
madhye vibhīṣaṇam rājānam abhyasiñcat
9. Thus instructed, Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) then anointed Vibhīṣaṇa as king among the chief Vānaras, by the command of Rāma.
तं प्रसादं तु रामस्य दृष्ट्वा सद्यः प्लवंगमाः ।
प्रचुक्रुशुर्महानादान् साधु साध्विति चाब्रुवन् ॥१०॥
10. taṃ prasādaṃ tu rāmasya dṛṣṭvā sadyaḥ plavaṃgamāḥ ,
pracukruśurmahānādān sādhu sādhviti cābruvan.
10. tam prasādam tu rāmasya dṛṣṭvā sadyaḥ plavaṅgamāḥ
pracakruśuḥ mahānādān sādhu sādhu iti ca abruvan
10. Seeing that favor of Rāma, the monkeys immediately roared great shouts and said, "Excellent! Excellent!"
अब्रवीच्च हनूमांश्च सुग्रीवश्च विभीषणम् ।
कथं सागरमक्षोभ्यं तराम वरुणालयम् ॥११॥
11. abravīcca hanūmāṃśca sugrīvaśca vibhīṣaṇam ,
kathaṃ sāgaramakṣobhyaṃ tarāma varuṇālayam.
11. abravīt ca hanūmān ca sugrīvaḥ ca vibhīṣaṇam
katham sāgaram akṣobhyam tarāma varuṇālayam
11. Hanumān and Sugrīva spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa, "How shall we cross the unperturbed ocean, the abode of Varuṇa?"
उपायैरभिगच्छामो यथा नदनदीपतिम् ।
तराम तरसा सर्वे ससैन्या वरुणालयम् ॥१२॥
12. upāyairabhigacchāmo yathā nadanadīpatim ,
tarāma tarasā sarve sasainyā varuṇālayam.
12. upāyaiḥ abhigacchāmaḥ yathā nadanadīpatim
tarāma tarasā sarve sasainyāḥ varuṇālayam
12. "Let us approach the lord of rivers with appropriate strategies, so that all of us, together with our army, may swiftly cross this abode of Varuṇa."
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मज्ञः प्रत्युवाच विभीषणः ।
समुद्रं राघवो राजा शरणं गन्तुमर्हति ॥१३॥
13. evamuktastu dharmajñaḥ pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
samudraṃ rāghavo rājā śaraṇaṃ gantumarhati.
13. evam uktaḥ tu dharmajñaḥ pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ
samudram rāghavaḥ rājā śaraṇam gantum arhati
13. Thus spoken to, Vibhīṣaṇa, who understood natural law (dharma), replied, "King Rāghava (Rāma) ought to go for refuge to the ocean."
खानितः सगरेणायमप्रमेयो महोदधिः ।
कर्तुमर्हति रामस्य ज्ञातेः कार्यं महोदधिः ॥१४॥
14. khānitaḥ sagareṇāyamaprameyo mahodadhiḥ ,
kartumarhati rāmasya jñāteḥ kāryaṃ mahodadhiḥ.
14. khānitaḥ sagareṇa ayam aprameyaḥ mahodadhiḥ
kartum arhati rāmasya jñāteḥ kāryam mahodadhiḥ
14. ayam aprameyaḥ mahodadhiḥ sagareṇa khānitaḥ
mahodadhiḥ rāmasya jñāteḥ kāryam kartum arhati
14. This immeasurable great ocean, which was excavated by Sagara, should now accomplish the task for Rāma's lineage.
एवं विभीषणेनोक्ते राक्षसेन विपश्चिता ।
प्रकृत्या धर्मशीलस्य राघवस्याप्यरोचत ॥१५॥
15. evaṃ vibhīṣaṇenokte rākṣasena vipaścitā ,
prakṛtyā dharmaśīlasya rāghavasyāpyarocata.
15. evam vibhīṣaṇena ukte rākṣasena vipaścitā
prakṛtyā dharmaśīlasya rāghavasya api arocata
15. evam vipaścitā rākṣasena vibhīṣaṇena ukte
prakṛtyā dharmaśīlasya rāghavasya api arocata
15. When the wise Rākṣasa Vibhīṣaṇa spoke thus, it was pleasing even to Rāghava, whose inherent nature (prakṛti) is virtuous (dharma).
स लक्ष्मणं महातेजाः सुग्रीवं च हरीश्वरम् ।
सत्क्रियार्थं क्रियादक्षः स्मितपूर्वमुवाच ह ॥१६॥
16. sa lakṣmaṇaṃ mahātejāḥ sugrīvaṃ ca harīśvaram ,
satkriyārthaṃ kriyādakṣaḥ smitapūrvamuvāca ha.
16. saḥ lakṣmaṇam mahātejāḥ sugrīvam ca harīśvaram
satkriyārtham kriyādakṣaḥ smitapūrvam uvāca ha
16. saḥ mahātejāḥ kriyādakṣaḥ satkriyārtham smitapūrvam
lakṣmaṇam ca harīśvaram sugrīvam uvāca ha
16. That greatly energetic and skillful one indeed spoke to Lakṣmaṇa and Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, with a smile, for the purpose of showing respect.
विभीषणस्य मन्त्रो ऽयं मम लक्ष्मण रोचते ।
ब्रूहि त्वं सहसुग्रीवस्तवापि यदि रोचते ॥१७॥
17. vibhīṣaṇasya mantro'yaṃ mama lakṣmaṇa rocate ,
brūhi tvaṃ sahasugrīvastavāpi yadi rocate.
17. vibhīṣaṇasya mantraḥ ayam mama lakṣmaṇa rocate
brūhi tvam sahasugrīvaḥ tava api yadi rocate
17. lakṣmaṇa ayam vibhīṣaṇasya mantraḥ mama rocate
tvam sahasugrīvaḥ yadi tava api rocate brūhi
17. O Lakṣmaṇa, this counsel (mantra) of Vibhīṣaṇa is pleasing to me. You, along with Sugrīva, state if it is also pleasing to you.
सुग्रीवः पण्डितो नित्यं भवान्मन्त्रविचक्षणः ।
उभाभ्यां संप्रधार्यार्यं रोचते यत्तदुच्यताम् ॥१८॥
18. sugrīvaḥ paṇḍito nityaṃ bhavānmantravicakṣaṇaḥ ,
ubhābhyāṃ saṃpradhāryāryaṃ rocate yattaducyatām.
18. sugrīvaḥ paṇḍitaḥ nityam bhavān mantra-vicakṣaṇaḥ
ubhābhyām sampradhārya āryam rocate yat tat ucyatām
18. sugrīvaḥ nityam paṇḍitaḥ,
bhavān mantra-vicakṣaṇaḥ ubhābhyām āryam sampradhārya,
yat tat rocate ucyatām
18. Sugriva is always wise, and you (Hanuman) are skilled in counsel. Having thoroughly considered the matter together, whatever seems appropriate, that should be stated.
एवमुक्तौ तु तौ वीराव् उभौ सुग्रीवलक्ष्मणौ ।
समुदाचार संयुक्तमिदं वचनमूचतुः ॥१९॥
19. evamuktau tu tau vīrāv ubhau sugrīvalakṣmaṇau ,
samudācāra saṃyuktamidaṃ vacanamūcatuḥ.
19. evam uktau tu tau vīrau ubhau sugrīva-lakṣmaṇau
samudācāra-saṃyuktam idam vacanam ūcatuḥ
19. evam uktau tu tau ubhau sugrīva-lakṣmaṇau
vīrau samudācāra-saṃyuktam idam vacanam ūcatuḥ
19. Thus addressed, those two heroes, both Sugriva and Lakshmana, spoke these words full of courtesy.
किमर्थं नो नरव्याघ्र न रोचिष्यति राघव ।
विभीषणेन यत्तूक्तमस्मिन् काले सुखावहम् ॥२०॥
20. kimarthaṃ no naravyāghra na rociṣyati rāghava ,
vibhīṣaṇena yattūktamasmin kāle sukhāvaham.
20. kim artham naḥ nara-vyāghra na rociṣyati rāghava
vibhīṣaṇena yat tu uktam asmin kāle sukha-āvaham
20. naravyāghra rāghava,
asmin kāle vibhīṣaṇena yat tu sukhāvaham uktam,
naḥ kim artham na rociṣyati ?
20. O Rama, tiger among men, why should that beneficial counsel spoken by Vibhishana at this time not be agreeable to us?
अबद्ध्वा सागरे सेतुं घोरे ऽस्मिन् वरुणालये ।
लङ्का नासादितुं शक्या सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥२१॥
21. abaddhvā sāgare setuṃ ghore'smin varuṇālaye ,
laṅkā nāsādituṃ śakyā sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ.
21. abaddhvā sāgare setum ghore asmin varuṇa-ālaye laṅkā
na āsādayitum śakyā sa-indraiḥ api sura-asuraiḥ
21. ghore asmin varuṇālaye sāgare setum abaddhvā,
sa-indraiḥ surāsuraiḥ api laṅkā āsādayitum na śakyā
21. Without building a bridge across this terrible ocean, the abode of Varuna, Lanka cannot be reached even by the gods and demons, along with Indra.
विभीषणस्य शूरस्य यथार्थं क्रियतां वचः ।
अलं कालात्ययं कृत्वा समुद्रो ऽयं नियुज्यताम् ॥२२॥
22. vibhīṣaṇasya śūrasya yathārthaṃ kriyatāṃ vacaḥ ,
alaṃ kālātyayaṃ kṛtvā samudro'yaṃ niyujyatām.
22. Vibhīṣaṇasya śūrasya yathārtham kriyatām vacaḥ
alam kālātyayam kṛtvā samudraḥ ayam niyujyatām
22. śūrasya Vibhīṣaṇasya yathārtham vacaḥ kriyatām
alam kālātyayam kṛtvā ayam samudraḥ niyujyatām
22. Let the sensible advice of the valiant Vibhīṣaṇa be followed. There has been enough delay; let this ocean be put to use.
एवमुक्तः कुशास्तीर्णे तीरे नदनदीपतेः ।
संविवेश तदा रामो वेद्यामिव हुताशनः ॥२३॥
23. evamuktaḥ kuśāstīrṇe tīre nadanadīpateḥ ,
saṃviveśa tadā rāmo vedyāmiva hutāśanaḥ.
23. evam uktaḥ kuśāstīrṇe tīre nadanadīpateḥ
samviveśa tadā rāmaḥ vedyām iva hutāśanaḥ
23. evam uktaḥ rāmaḥ tadā nadanadīpateḥ kuśāstīrṇe
tīre vedyām hutāśanaḥ iva samviveśa
23. Having been thus addressed, Rāma then lay down on the bank of the ocean (nadanadīpati), which was spread with kuśa grass, like a sacred fire (hutāśana) on an altar.
