अथ तं व्यथया दीनं सविशेषममर्षितम् ।
श्वसन्तमिव नागेन्द्रं रोषविस्फारितेक्षणम् ॥१॥

1. Then (Rama approached) him, who was dejected by anguish, particularly enraged, and breathing heavily like a great serpent, his eyes wide with fury.
आसाद्य रामः सौमित्रिं सुहृदं भ्रातरं प्रियम् ।
उवाचेदं स धैर्येण धारयन् सत्त्वमात्मवान् ॥२॥
2. āsādya rāmaḥ saumitriṃ suhṛdaṃ bhrātaraṃ priyam ,
uvācedaṃ sa dhairyeṇa dhārayan sattvamātmavān.
2. āsādya rāmaḥ saumitrim suhṛdam bhrātaram priyam
uvāca idam saḥ dhairyena dhārayan sattvam ātmavān

2. Rama, approaching Saumitri (Lakshmana) – his dear brother and friend – and maintaining his inner strength with steadfastness, being self-possessed (ātmavān), spoke these words.
सौमित्रे यो ऽभिषेकार्थे मम संभारसंभ्रमः ।
अभिषेकनिवृत्त्यर्थे सो ऽस्तु संभारसंभ्रमः ॥३॥
3. saumitre yo'bhiṣekārthe mama saṃbhārasaṃbhramaḥ ,
abhiṣekanivṛttyarthe so'stu saṃbhārasaṃbhramaḥ.

abhiṣekanivṛttyarthe saḥ astu saṃbhārasaṃbhramaḥ

3. O Saumitri, the same bustling activity (saṃbhārasaṃbhramaḥ) that was for my coronation (abhiṣeka), let that now be for the purpose of stopping the coronation.
यस्या मदभिषेकार्थं मानसं परितप्यते ।
माता नः सा यथा न स्यात् सविशङ्का तथा कुरु ॥४॥
4. yasyā madabhiṣekārthaṃ mānasaṃ paritapyate ,
mātā naḥ sā yathā na syāt saviśaṅkā tathā kuru.
4. yasyāḥ madabhiṣekārtham mānasam paritapyate
mātā naḥ sā yathā na syāt saviśaṅkā tathā kuru
4. yasyāḥ naḥ mātā madabhiṣekārtham mānasam paritapyate,
sā yathā saviśaṅkā na syāt,
tathā kuru.
4. Whose mind is greatly troubled because of my consecration (abhiṣeka), ensure that our mother does not become anxious (saviśaṅkā). Arrange things in that way.
तस्याः शङ्कामयं दुःखं मुहूर्तमपि नोत्सहे ।
मनसि प्रतिसंजातं सौमित्रे ऽहमुपेक्षितुम् ॥५॥
5. tasyāḥ śaṅkāmayaṃ duḥkhaṃ muhūrtamapi notsahe ,
manasi pratisaṃjātaṃ saumitre'hamupekṣitum.
5. tasyāḥ śaṅkāmayam duḥkham muhūrtam api na utsahe
manasi pratisañjātam saumitre aham upekṣitum
5. saumitre,
aham tasyāḥ manasi pratisañjātam śaṅkāmayam duḥkham muhūrtam api upekṣitum na utsahe.
5. O son of Sumitrā (saumitre), I cannot endure to neglect, even for a moment, the sorrow (duḥkha) born of apprehension (śaṅkā) that has arisen in her mind.
न बुद्धिपूर्वं नाबुद्धं स्मरामीह कदा चन ।
मातॄणां वा पितुर्वाहं कृतमल्पं च विप्रियम् ॥६॥
6. na buddhipūrvaṃ nābuddhaṃ smarāmīha kadā cana ,
mātṝṇāṃ vā piturvāhaṃ kṛtamalpaṃ ca vipriyam.
6. na buddhipūrvam na abuddham smarāmi īha kadā cana
mātṝṇām vā pituḥ vā aham kṛtam alpam ca vipriyam
6. aham īha kadā cana mātṝṇām vā pituḥ vā buddhipūrvam na abuddham ca kṛtam alpam vipriyam na smarāmi.
6. Here (īha), I never (kadā cana) recall (smarāmi) any slight (alpam) disservice (vipriyam) caused by me, either intentionally (buddhipūrvam) or unintentionally (abuddham), to my mothers (mātṝṇām) or my father (pituḥ).
सत्यः सत्याभिसंधश्च नित्यं सत्यपराक्रमः ।
परलोकभयाद्भीतो निर्भयो ऽस्तु पिता मम ॥७॥
7. satyaḥ satyābhisaṃdhaśca nityaṃ satyaparākramaḥ ,
paralokabhayādbhīto nirbhayo'stu pitā mama.
7. satyaḥ satyābhisandhaḥ ca nityam satyaparākramaḥ
paralokabhayāt bhītaḥ nirbhayaḥ astu pitā mama
7. mama pitā satyaḥ satyābhisandhaḥ ca nityam satyaparākramaḥ paralokabhayāt bhītaḥ nirbhayaḥ astu.
7. My father is truthful (satyaḥ), steadfast in his promises (satyābhisandha), and always (nityam) possesses true valor (satyaparākrama). May he, who is fearful of the afterlife (paraloka), become fearless (nirbhayaḥ).
तस्यापि हि भवेदस्मिन् कर्मण्यप्रतिसंहृते ।
सत्यं नेति मनस्तापस्तस्य तापस्तपेच्च माम् ॥८॥
8. tasyāpi hi bhavedasmin karmaṇyapratisaṃhṛte ,
satyaṃ neti manastāpastasya tāpastapecca mām.
8. tasya api hi bhavet asmin karmaṇi apratisaṃhṛte
satyam na iti manastāpaḥ tasya tāpaḥ tapec ca mām
8. hi asmin apratisaṃhṛte karmaṇi tasya api "satyam na iti" manastāpaḥ bhavet; ca tasya tāpaḥ mām tapec.
8. Indeed, even for him, if this action (karma) is not completed, there will arise mental anguish, pondering 'Is this true, or not?'. And that very anguish of his will torment me.
अभिषेकविधानं तु तस्मात् संहृत्य लक्ष्मण ।
अन्वगेवाहमिच्छामि वनं गन्तुमितः पुनः ॥९॥
9. abhiṣekavidhānaṃ tu tasmāt saṃhṛtya lakṣmaṇa ,
anvagevāhamicchāmi vanaṃ gantumitaḥ punaḥ.
9. abhiṣekavidhānam tu tasmāt saṃhṛtya lakṣmaṇa
anvaga eva aham icchāmi vanam gantum itaḥ punaḥ
9. lakṣmaṇa,
tasmāt abhiṣekavidhānam saṃhṛtya,
aham anvaga eva itaḥ punaḥ vanam gantum icchāmi.
9. Therefore, O Lakṣmaṇa, having halted this coronation ceremony, I indeed wish to go to the forest from here again, following (my father's word).
मम प्रव्राजनादद्य कृतकृत्या नृपात्मजा ।
सुतं भरतमव्यग्रमभिषेचयिता ततः ॥१०॥
10. mama pravrājanādadya kṛtakṛtyā nṛpātmajā ,
sutaṃ bharatamavyagramabhiṣecayitā tataḥ.
10. mama pravrājanāt adya kṛtakṛtyā nṛpātmajā
sutam bharatam avyagram abhiṣecayitā tataḥ
10. adya mama pravrājanāt nṛpātmajā kṛtakṛtyā.
tataḥ avyagram sutam bharatam abhiṣecayitā.
10. Today, by my exile, the king's daughter (Kaikeyī) will have achieved her purpose. Then she will coronate her son Bharata, who will be free from anxiety.
मयि चीराजिनधरे जटामण्डलधारिणि ।
गते ऽरण्यं च कैकेय्या भविष्यति मनःसुखम् ॥११॥
11. mayi cīrājinadhare jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇi ,
gate'raṇyaṃ ca kaikeyyā bhaviṣyati manaḥsukham.
11. mayi cīrājinadhare jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇi gate
araṇyam ca kaikeyīyā bhaviṣyati manaḥsukham
11. mayi cīrājinadhare jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇi araṇyam gate ca,
kaikeyīyā manaḥsukham bhaviṣyati.
11. When I have gone to the forest, adorned with bark garments, deer skin, and matted locks, then Kaikeyī will experience mental happiness.
बुद्धिः प्रणीता येनेयं मनश्च सुसमाहितम् ।
तत्तु नार्हामि संक्लेष्टुं प्रव्रजिष्यामि माचिरम् ॥१२॥
12. buddhiḥ praṇītā yeneyaṃ manaśca susamāhitam ,
tattu nārhāmi saṃkleṣṭuṃ pravrajiṣyāmi māciram.
12. buddhiḥ praṇītā yena iyaṃ manaḥ ca susamāhitam tat
tu na arhāmi saṃkleṣṭuṃ pravrajiṣyāmi mā aciram
12. yena iyaṃ buddhiḥ ca manaḥ susamāhitam praṇītā (asti),
tat tu (aham) saṃkleṣṭuṃ na arhāmi.
aciram mā pravrajiṣyāmi.
12. Since this intellect has been guided (praṇītā) by such a one (or by fate), and the mind (manas) is perfectly composed, I certainly ought not to grieve. I will depart without delay.
कृतान्तस्त्वेव सौमित्रे द्रष्टव्यो मत्प्रवासने ।
राज्यस्य च वितीर्णस्य पुनरेव निवर्तने ॥१३॥
13. kṛtāntastveva saumitre draṣṭavyo matpravāsane ,
rājyasya ca vitīrṇasya punareva nivartane.
13. kṛtāntaḥ tu eva saumitre draṣṭavyaḥ matpravāsane
rājyasya ca vitīrṇasya punaḥ eva nivartane
13. saumitre,
matpravāsane ca vitīrṇasya rājyasya punaḥ eva nivartane tu kṛtāntaḥ eva draṣṭavyaḥ.
13. O Saumitra (Lakṣmaṇa), destiny (kṛtānta) alone must be acknowledged as the cause for my exile, and for the kingdom, having been relinquished, not returning again.
कैकेय्याः प्रतिपत्तिर्हि कथं स्यान्मम पीडने ।
यदि भावो न दैवो ऽयं कृतान्तविहितो भवेत् ॥१४॥
14. kaikeyyāḥ pratipattirhi kathaṃ syānmama pīḍane ,
yadi bhāvo na daivo'yaṃ kṛtāntavihito bhavet.
14. kaikeyyāḥ pratipattiḥ hi kathaṃ syāt mama pīḍane
yadi bhāvaḥ na daivaḥ ayaṃ kṛtāntavihitaḥ bhavet
14. hi kathaṃ kaikeyyāḥ pratipattiḥ mama pīḍane syāt,
yadi ayaṃ bhāvaḥ daivaḥ kṛtāntavihitaḥ na bhavet?
14. How indeed could Kaikeyī's conduct be directed at my suffering, if this disposition were not divine and ordained by destiny (kṛtānta)?
जानासि हि यथा सौम्य न मातृषु ममान्तरम् ।
भूतपूर्वं विशेषो वा तस्या मयि सुते ऽपि वा ॥१५॥
15. jānāsi hi yathā saumya na mātṛṣu mamāntaram ,
bhūtapūrvaṃ viśeṣo vā tasyā mayi sute'pi vā.
15. jānāsi hi yathā saumya na mātṛṣu mama antaram
bhūtapūrvaṃ viśeṣaḥ vā tasyāḥ mayi sute api vā
15. saumya,
hi jānāsi yathā mātṛṣu mama antaram na bhūtapūrvaṃ (asti),
vā tasyāḥ mayi sute api vā viśeṣaḥ na (bhūtapūrvaṃ asti).
15. O gentle one (Lakṣmaṇa), you certainly know how there was no distinction (antaram) in my feelings towards my mothers in the past, nor any special favor (viśeṣa) shown by her (Kaikeyī) towards me or even towards her own son.
सो ऽभिषेकनिवृत्त्यर्थैः प्रवासार्थैश्च दुर्वचैः ।
उग्रैर्वाक्यैरहं तस्या नान्यद्दैवात् समर्थये ॥१६॥
16. so'bhiṣekanivṛttyarthaiḥ pravāsārthaiśca durvacaiḥ ,
ugrairvākyairahaṃ tasyā nānyaddaivāt samarthaye.
16. saḥ abhiṣeka-nivṛtty-arthaiḥ pravāsa-arthaiḥ ca durvacaiḥ
ugraiḥ vākyaiḥ aham tasyāḥ na anyat daivāt samarthaye
16. aham tasyāḥ abhiṣeka-nivṛtty-arthaiḥ pravāsa-arthaiḥ ca
durvacaiḥ ugraiḥ vākyaiḥ daivāt anyat na samarthaye saḥ
16. Regarding her, I cannot attribute those harsh and severe words - intended to prevent the coronation and to cause my exile - to anything other than destiny (daiva).
कथं प्रकृतिसंपन्ना राजपुत्री तथागुणा ।
ब्रूयात् सा प्राकृतेव स्त्री मत्पीडां भर्तृसंनिधौ ॥१७॥
17. kathaṃ prakṛtisaṃpannā rājaputrī tathāguṇā ,
brūyāt sā prākṛteva strī matpīḍāṃ bhartṛsaṃnidhau.
17. katham prakṛti-sampannā rājaputrī tathā-guṇā brūyāt
sā prākṛtā iva strī mat-pīḍām bhartṛ-saṃnidhau
17. katham sā prakṛti-sampannā tathā-guṇā rājaputrī
prākṛtā strī iva mat-pīḍām bhartṛ-saṃnidhau brūyāt
17. How could she, a princess endowed with such noble nature (prakṛti) and excellent qualities, speak of my suffering in the presence of her husband, like some ordinary woman?
यदचिन्त्यं तु तद्दैवं भूतेष्वपि न हन्यते ।
व्यक्तं मयि च तस्यां च पतितो हि विपर्ययः ॥१८॥
18. yadacintyaṃ tu taddaivaṃ bhūteṣvapi na hanyate ,
vyaktaṃ mayi ca tasyāṃ ca patito hi viparyayaḥ.
18. yat acintyam tu tat daivam bhūteṣu api na hanyate
vyaktam mayi ca tasyām ca patitaḥ hi viparyayaḥ
18. yat acintyam tat daivam tu bhūteṣu api na hanyate
vyaktam mayi ca tasyām ca hi viparyayaḥ patitaḥ
18. Indeed, that which is inconceivable, that destiny (daiva), cannot be thwarted even by living beings. A clear reversal of fortune has certainly occurred in me and in her.
कश्चिद्दैवेन सौमित्रे योद्धुमुत्सहते पुमान् ।
यस्य न ग्रहणं किं चित् कर्मणो ऽन्यत्र दृश्यते ॥१९॥
19. kaściddaivena saumitre yoddhumutsahate pumān ,
yasya na grahaṇaṃ kiṃ cit karmaṇo'nyatra dṛśyate.
19. kaścit daivena saumitre yoddhum utsahate pumān
yasya na grahaṇam kim cit karmaṇaḥ anyatra dṛśyate
19. saumitre kaścit pumān daivena yoddhum utsahate
yasya kim cit grahaṇam karmaṇaḥ anyatra na dṛśyate
19. O son of Sumitrā, what man dares to fight with destiny (daiva)? For nothing of it is apprehended (grahaṇa) or seen anywhere apart from its actions (karma).
सुखदुःखे भयक्रोधौ लाभालाभौ भवाभवौ ।
यस्य किं चित्तथाभूतं ननु दैवस्य कर्म तत् ॥२०॥
20. sukhaduḥkhe bhayakrodhau lābhālābhau bhavābhavau ,
yasya kiṃ cittathābhūtaṃ nanu daivasya karma tat.
20. sukha-duḥkhe bhaya-krodhau lābha-alābhau bhava-abhavau
yasya kim cittam tathā-bhūtam nanu daivasya karma tat
20. yasya kim cittam sukha-duḥkhe bhaya-krodhau lābha-alābhau
bhava-abhavau tathā-bhūtam tat nanu daivasya karma
20. Happiness and sorrow, fear and anger, gain and loss, existence and non-existence – whatever state the mind takes on in this manner, that is indeed the work (karma) of destiny (daiva).
व्याहते ऽप्यभिषेके मे परितापो न विद्यते ।
तस्मादपरितापः संस्त्वमप्यनुविधाय माम् ।
प्रतिसंहारय क्षिप्रमाभिषेचनिकीं क्रियाम् ॥२१॥
21. vyāhate'pyabhiṣeke me paritāpo na vidyate ,
tasmādaparitāpaḥ saṃstvamapyanuvidhāya mām ,
pratisaṃhāraya kṣipramābhiṣecanikīṃ kriyām.
21. vyāhate api abhiṣeke me paritāpaḥ
na vidyate tasmāt aparitāpaḥ san
tvam api anuvidhāya mām pratisaṃhāraya
kṣipram ābhiṣecanikīm kriyām
21. me abhiṣeke vyāhate api paritāpaḥ
na vidyate tasmāt tvam api aparitāpaḥ
san mām anuvidhāya kṣipram
ābhiṣecanikīm kriyām pratisaṃhāraya
21. Even though my consecration ceremony is thwarted, I feel no distress. Therefore, being free from anxiety yourself, and following my example, you too should quickly bring an end to the coronation ceremony.
न लक्ष्मणास्मिन्मम राज्यविघ्ने माता यवीयस्यतिशङ्कनीया ।
दैवाभिपन्ना हि वदन्त्यनिष्टं जानासि दैवं च तथाप्रभावम् ॥२२॥
22. na lakṣmaṇāsminmama rājyavighne mātā yavīyasyatiśaṅkanīyā ,
daivābhipannā hi vadantyaniṣṭaṃ jānāsi daivaṃ ca tathāprabhāvam.
22. na lakṣmaṇa asmin mama rājya-vighne
mātā yavīyasī ati-śaṅkanīyā
daiva-abhipannā hi vadanti aniṣṭam
jānāsi daivam ca tathā-prabhāvam
22. lakṣmaṇa,
asmin mama rājya-vighne yavīyasī mātā na ati-śaṅkanīyā.
hi daiva-abhipannāḥ aniṣṭam vadanti.
ca tvam daivam tathā-prabhāvam jānāsi.
22. O Lakshmana, my younger mother should not be greatly suspected in this impediment to my reign. Indeed, people speak ill when afflicted by destiny (daiva), and you know that destiny (daiva) has such a powerful influence.
