मुनेर्वचनमक्लीबं श्रुत्वा नरवरात्मजः ।
राघवः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच दृढव्रतः ॥१॥
1. munervacanamaklībaṃ śrutvā naravarātmajaḥ ,
rāghavaḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā pratyuvāca dṛḍhavrataḥ.

1. Having heard the sage's resolute words, Rama, the son of the best of men, who was firm in his vows, replied with folded hands.
पितुर्वचननिर्देशात् पितुर्वचनगौरवात् ।
वचनं कौशिकस्येति कर्तव्यमविशङ्कया ॥२॥
2. piturvacananirdeśāt piturvacanagauravāt ,
vacanaṃ kauśikasyeti kartavyamaviśaṅkayā.
2. pituḥ vacananirdeśāt pituḥ vacanagauravāt
vacanam kauśikasya iti kartavyam aviśaṅkayā

2. Due to the instruction of my father and out of reverence for his words, this command of Kaushika must be carried out without any doubt or hesitation.
अनुशिष्टो ऽस्म्ययोध्यायां गुरुमध्ये महात्मना ।
पित्रा दशरथेनाहं नावज्ञेयं च तद्वचः ॥३॥
3. anuśiṣṭo'smyayodhyāyāṃ gurumadhye mahātmanā ,
pitrā daśarathenāhaṃ nāvajñeyaṃ ca tadvacaḥ.
3. anuśiṣṭaḥ asmi ayodhyāyām gurumadhye mahātmanā
pitrā daśarathena aham na avajñeyam ca tat vacaḥ
3. aham ayodhyāyām gurumadhye mahātmanā pitrā
daśarathena anuśiṣṭaḥ asmi ca tat vacaḥ na avajñeyam
3. I have been instructed in Ayodhya by my great-souled father Dasharatha, in the presence of my teachers (guru). Therefore, his word is not to be disregarded.
सो ऽहं पितुर्वचः श्रुत्वा शासनाद्ब्रह्म वादिनः ।
करिष्यामि न संदेहस्ताटकावधमुत्तमम् ॥४॥
4. so'haṃ piturvacaḥ śrutvā śāsanādbrahma vādinaḥ ,
kariṣyāmi na saṃdehastāṭakāvadhamuttamam.
4. saḥ aham pituḥ vacaḥ śrutvā śāsanāt brahmavādinaḥ
kariṣyāmi na sandehaḥ tāṭakāvadham uttamam
4. saḥ aham pituḥ vacaḥ श्रुत्वा [तथा] brahmavādinaḥ
śāsanāt uttamam tāṭakāvadham kariṣyāmi [अत्र] na sandehaḥ
4. Having heard my father's word, which stems from the command of the knower of the sacred texts (brahmavādin - referring to the sage), I will undoubtedly carry out the supreme slaying of Tataka. There is no doubt about this.
गोब्राह्मणहितार्थाय देशस्यास्य सुखाय च ।
तव चैवाप्रमेयस्य वचनं कर्तुमुद्यतः ॥५॥
5. gobrāhmaṇahitārthāya deśasyāsya sukhāya ca ,
tava caivāprameyasya vacanaṃ kartumudyataḥ.
5. go-brāhmaṇa-hitārthāya deśasya asya sukhāya ca
tava ca eva aprameyasya vacanam kartum udyataḥ
5. aham tava aprameyasya ca vacanam go-brāhmaṇa-hitārthāya
asya deśasya sukhāya ca kartum udyataḥ
5. I am prepared to fulfill your command, O immeasurable one, for the welfare of cows and Brahmins, and for the happiness of this country.
एवमुक्त्वा धनुर्मध्ये बद्ध्वा मुष्टिमरिंदमः ।
ज्याशब्दमकरोत्तीव्रं दिशः शब्देन पूरयन् ॥६॥
6. evamuktvā dhanurmadhye baddhvā muṣṭimariṃdamaḥ ,
jyāśabdamakarottīvraṃ diśaḥ śabdena pūrayan.
6. evam uktvā dhanuḥ madhye baddhvā muṣṭim arindamaḥ
jyā-śabdam akarot tīvram diśaḥ śabdena pūrayan
6. arindamaḥ evam uktvā dhanuḥ madhye muṣṭim baddhvā
tīvram jyā-śabdam akarot diśaḥ śabdena pūrayan
6. Having thus spoken, the subduer of enemies (arindama), holding his bow in the middle, produced an intense twang of the bowstring, filling all directions with that sound.
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्तास्ताटका वनवासिनः ।
ताटका च सुसंक्रुद्धा तेन शब्देन मोहिता ॥७॥
7. tena śabdena vitrastāstāṭakā vanavāsinaḥ ,
tāṭakā ca susaṃkruddhā tena śabdena mohitā.
7. tena śabdena vitrastāḥ tāṭakā vanavāsinaḥ
tāṭakā ca susaṃkruddhā tena śabdena mohitā
7. tena śabdena vanavāsinaḥ tāṭakā ca vitrastāḥ
tāṭakā ca susaṃkruddhā tena śabdena mohitā
7. That sound terrified the forest-dwellers and Taṭakā alike. Taṭakā, though greatly enraged, was also bewildered by that very sound.
तं शब्दमभिनिध्याय राक्षसी क्रोधमूर्छिता ।
श्रुत्वा चाभ्यद्रवद्वेगाद् यतः शब्दो विनिःसृतः ॥८॥
8. taṃ śabdamabhinidhyāya rākṣasī krodhamūrchitā ,
śrutvā cābhyadravadvegād yataḥ śabdo viniḥsṛtaḥ.
8. tam śabdam abhini-dhyāya rākṣasī krodha-mūrcitā
śrutvā ca abhi-adravat vegāt yataḥ śabdaḥ viniḥsṛtaḥ
8. krodha-mūrcitā rākṣasī tam śabdam abhini-dhyāya ca
śrutvā vegāt yataḥ śabdaḥ viniḥsṛtaḥ abhi-adravat
8. Overwhelmed by rage, the demoness, having heard and identified that sound, swiftly rushed from where the sound had emanated.
तां दृष्ट्वा राघवः क्रुद्धां विकृतां विकृताननाम् ।
प्रमाणेनातिवृद्धां च लक्ष्मणं सो ऽभ्यभाषत ॥९॥
9. tāṃ dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ kruddhāṃ vikṛtāṃ vikṛtānanām ,
pramāṇenātivṛddhāṃ ca lakṣmaṇaṃ so'bhyabhāṣata.
9. tām dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ kruddhām vikṛtām vikṛtānanām
pramāṇena ativṛddhām ca lakṣmaṇam saḥ abhyabhāṣata
9. rāghavaḥ dṛṣṭvā tām kruddhām vikṛtām vikṛtānanām
ca pramāṇena ativṛddhām saḥ abhyabhāṣata lakṣmaṇam
9. Seeing her, who was angry, disfigured, with a grotesque face, and exceedingly huge in stature, Rama spoke to Lakshmana.
पश्य लक्ष्मण यक्षिण्या भैरवं दारुणं वपुः ।
भिद्येरन्दर्शनादस्या भीरूणां हृदयानि च ॥१०॥
10. paśya lakṣmaṇa yakṣiṇyā bhairavaṃ dāruṇaṃ vapuḥ ,
bhidyerandarśanādasyā bhīrūṇāṃ hṛdayāni ca.
10. paśya lakṣmaṇa yakṣiṇyāḥ bhairavam dāruṇam vapuḥ
bhidyēran darśanāt asyāḥ bhīrūṇām hṛdayāni ca
10. lakṣmaṇa paśya bhairavam dāruṇam vapuḥ yakṣiṇyāḥ
ca bhīrūṇām hṛdayāni bhidyēran darśanāt asyāḥ
10. Look, Lakshmana, at the terrifying, dreadful form of this Yakshini! Indeed, the hearts of timid people would shatter simply from seeing her.
एनां पश्य दुराधर्षां माया बलसमन्विताम् ।
विनिवृत्तां करोम्यद्य हृतकर्णाग्रनासिकाम् ॥११॥
11. enāṃ paśya durādharṣāṃ māyā balasamanvitām ,
vinivṛttāṃ karomyadya hṛtakarṇāgranāsikām.
11. enām paśya durādharṣām māyābalasamannvitām
vinivṛttām karomi adya hṛtakarṇāgranāsikām
11. paśya enām durādharṣām māyābalasamannvitām
adya karomi vinivṛttām hṛtakarṇāgranāsikām
11. Behold her, who is unassailable and endowed with magical power (māyā)! Today I shall make her retreat, after cutting off her ears and the tip of her nose.
न ह्येनामुत्सहे हन्तुं स्त्रीस्वभावेन रक्षिताम् ।
वीर्यं चास्या गतिं चापि हनिष्यामीति मे मतिः ॥१२॥
12. na hyenāmutsahe hantuṃ strīsvabhāvena rakṣitām ,
vīryaṃ cāsyā gatiṃ cāpi haniṣyāmīti me matiḥ.
12. na hi enām utsahe hantum strīsvabhāvena rakṣitām
vīryam ca asyāḥ gatim ca api haniṣyāmi iti me matiḥ
12. hi na utsahe hantum enām rakṣitām strīsvabhāvena me
matiḥ iti haniṣyāmi asyāḥ vīryam ca gatim ca api
12. Indeed, I do not dare to kill her, as she is protected by her feminine nature. My resolve is that I will destroy her power and her mobility.
एवं ब्रुवाणे रामे तु ताटका क्रोधमूर्छिता ।
उद्यम्य बाहू गर्जन्ती राममेवाभ्यधावत ॥१३॥
13. evaṃ bruvāṇe rāme tu tāṭakā krodhamūrchitā ,
udyamya bāhū garjantī rāmamevābhyadhāvata.
13. evam bruvāṇe rāme tu tāṭakā krodhamūrchitā
udyamya bāhū garjantī rāmam eva abhyadhāvat
13. rāme evam bruvāṇe tu krodhamūrchitā tāṭakā
bāhū udyamya garjantī rāmam eva abhyadhāvat
13. When Rāma was speaking thus, Tāṭakā, enraged, lifted her arms, and roaring, charged directly at Rāma.
तामापतन्तीं वेगेन विक्रान्तामशनीमिव ।
शरेणोरसि विव्याध सा पपात ममार च ॥१४॥
14. tāmāpatantīṃ vegena vikrāntāmaśanīmiva ,
śareṇorasi vivyādha sā papāta mamāra ca.
14. tām āpatantīm vegena vikrāntām aśanīm iva
śareṇa urasi vivyādha sā papāta mamāra ca
14. śareṇa (Rāma) tām vegena āpatantīm aśanīm iva
vikrāntām urasi vivyādha; sā papāta ca mamāra
14. With an arrow, (Rāma) pierced her in the chest as she rapidly charged, formidable like a thunderbolt. She then fell and died.
तां हतां भीमसंकाशां दृष्ट्वा सुरपतिस्तदा ।
साधु साध्विति काकुत्स्थं सुराश्च समपूजयन् ॥१५॥
15. tāṃ hatāṃ bhīmasaṃkāśāṃ dṛṣṭvā surapatistadā ,
sādhu sādhviti kākutsthaṃ surāśca samapūjayan.
15. tām hatām bhīmasaṃkāśām dṛṣṭvā surapatiḥ tadā
sādhu sādhu iti kākutstham surāḥ ca samapūjayan
15. tadā surapatiḥ ca surāḥ tām hatām bhīmasaṃkāśām dṛṣṭvā,
"sādhu sādhu" iti (uktvā) kākutstham samapūjayan
15. When the lord of the gods (Indra) saw her, the formidable Tāṭakā, slain, he and the other gods then exclaimed, "Excellent! Excellent!" and worshipped Kakutstha (Rāma).
उवाच परमप्रीतः सहस्राक्षः पुरंदरः ।
सुराश्च सर्वे संहृष्टा विश्वामित्रमथाब्रुवन् ॥१६॥
16. uvāca paramaprītaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ puraṃdaraḥ ,
surāśca sarve saṃhṛṣṭā viśvāmitramathābruvan.
16. uvāca paramaprītaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ purandaraḥ surāḥ
ca sarve saṃhṛṣṭāḥ viśvāmitram atha abruvan
16. paramaprītaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ purandaraḥ uvāca.
ca sarve saṃhṛṣṭāḥ surāḥ atha viśvāmitram abruvan
16. The exceedingly pleased thousand-eyed Indra (Purandara) spoke. And then, all the gods, greatly delighted, addressed Viśvāmitra.
मुने कौशिके भद्रं ते सेन्द्राः सर्वे मरुद्गणाः ।
तोषिताः कर्मणानेन स्नेहं दर्शय राघवे ॥१७॥
17. mune kauśike bhadraṃ te sendrāḥ sarve marudgaṇāḥ ,
toṣitāḥ karmaṇānena snehaṃ darśaya rāghave.
17. mune kauśike bhadram te sendrāḥ sarve marudgaṇāḥ
toṣitāḥ karmaṇā anena sneham darśaya rāghave
17. mune kauśike te bhadram sendrāḥ sarve marudgaṇāḥ
anena karmaṇā toṣitāḥ rāghave sneham darśaya
17. O sage Kaushika, may you be well. All the groups of Maruts, including Indra, have been satisfied by this action (karma). Now, show your affection towards Raghava.
प्रजापतेर् कृशाश्वस्य पुत्रान् सत्यपराक्रमान् ।
तपोबलभृतान्ब्रह्मन् राघवाय निवेदय ॥१८॥
18. prajāpater kṛśāśvasya putrān satyaparākramān ,
tapobalabhṛtānbrahman rāghavāya nivedaya.
18. prajāpateḥ kṛśāśvasya putrān satyaparākramān
tapobalabhṛtān brahman rāghavāya nivedaya
18. brahman prajāpateḥ kṛśāśvasya satyaparākramān
tapobalabhṛtān putrān rāghavāya nivedaya
18. O Brahmin, present to Raghava the sons of Prajapati Krishaśva, who possess true valor and are sustained by the power of their asceticism (tapas).
पात्रभूतश्च ते ब्रह्मंस्तवानुगमने धृतः ।
कर्तव्यं च महत् कर्म सुराणां राजसूनुना ॥१९॥
19. pātrabhūtaśca te brahmaṃstavānugamane dhṛtaḥ ,
kartavyaṃ ca mahat karma surāṇāṃ rājasūnunā.
19. pātrabhūtaḥ ca te brahman tava anugamane dhṛtaḥ
kartavyam ca mahat karma surāṇām rājasūnunā
19. brahman ca saḥ te pātrabhūtaḥ tava anugamane
dhṛtaḥ ca surāṇām mahat karma rājasūnunā kartavyam
19. And he (Raghava) is a worthy recipient for you, O Brahmin, engaged in accompanying you. Indeed, a great deed (karma) for the gods is to be accomplished by this prince.
एवमुक्त्वा सुराः सर्वे हृष्टा जग्मुर्यथागतम् ।
विश्वामित्रं पूजयित्वा ततः संध्या प्रवर्तते ॥२०॥
20. evamuktvā surāḥ sarve hṛṣṭā jagmuryathāgatam ,
viśvāmitraṃ pūjayitvā tataḥ saṃdhyā pravartate.
20. evam uktvā surāḥ sarve hṛṣṭā jagmuḥ yathāgatam
viśvāmitram pūjayitvā tataḥ sandhyā pravartate
20. evam uktvā sarve surāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ yathāgatam jagmuḥ
viśvāmitram pūjayitvā tataḥ sandhyā pravartate
20. Having spoken thus, all the gods, delighted, departed the way they had come. After honoring Vishwamitra, the evening (sandhyā) twilight then began.
ततो मुनिवरः प्रीतिस्ताटका वधतोषितः ।
मूर्ध्नि राममुपाघ्राय इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. tato munivaraḥ prītistāṭakā vadhatoṣitaḥ ,
mūrdhni rāmamupāghrāya idaṃ vacanamabravīt.
21. tataḥ munivaraḥ prītiḥ tāṭakāvadhatoṣitaḥ
mūrdhni rāmam upāghrāya idam vacanam abravīt
21. tataḥ munivaraḥ tāṭakāvadhatoṣitaḥ prītiḥ
rāmam mūrdhni upāghrāya idam vacanam abravīt
21. Then, the excellent sage (Viśvāmitra), delighted and pleased by the slaying of Tāṭakā, kissed Rāma on the head and spoke these words.
इहाद्य रजनीं राम वसेम शुभदर्शन ।
श्वः प्रभाते गमिष्यामस्तदाश्रमपदं मम ॥२२॥
22. ihādya rajanīṃ rāma vasema śubhadarśana ,
śvaḥ prabhāte gamiṣyāmastadāśramapadaṃ mama.
22. iha adya rajanīm rāma vasema śubhadarśana
śvaḥ prabhāte gamiṣyāmaḥ tat āśramapadam mama
22. rāma śubhadarśana adya iha rajanīm vasema
śvaḥ prabhāte mama tat āśramapadam gamiṣyāmaḥ
22. O Rāma, whose appearance is auspicious, let us stay here tonight. Tomorrow morning, we shall go to my hermitage (āśrama).
