स तु तत्र दशग्रीवः सह सैन्येन वीर्यवान् ।
अस्तं प्राप्ते दिनकरे निवासं समरोचयत् ॥१॥

1. When the sun had set, the powerful Daśagrīva, along with his army, chose to encamp there.

2. When the clear moon, shining with a brilliance like a mountain, had risen, he then saw beautiful sights there, enhanced by the moonbeams.
कर्णिकारवनैर्दिव्यैः कदम्बगहनैस्तथा ।
पद्मिनीभिश्च फुल्लाभिर्मन्दाकिन्या जलैरपि ॥३॥
3. karṇikāravanairdivyaiḥ kadambagahanaistathā ,
padminībhiśca phullābhirmandākinyā jalairapi.

3. There were splendid Karnikara groves, dense Kadamba thickets, blooming lotus ponds, and also the waters of the Mandakini river.
घण्टानामिव संनादः शुश्रुवे मधुरस्वनः ।
अप्सरोगणसंघनां गायतां धनदालये ॥४॥
4. ghaṇṭānāmiva saṃnādaḥ śuśruve madhurasvanaḥ ,
apsarogaṇasaṃghanāṃ gāyatāṃ dhanadālaye.

4. A sweet sound, like the resonance of bells, was heard, (the sound) of groups of Apsaras singing in the abode of Kubera (dhanada).
पुष्पवर्षाणि मुञ्चन्तो नगाः पवनताडिताः ।
शैलं तं वासयन्तीव मधुमाधवगन्धिनः ॥५॥
5. puṣpavarṣāṇi muñcanto nagāḥ pavanatāḍitāḥ ,
śailaṃ taṃ vāsayantīva madhumādhavagandhinaḥ.

5. The trees, swayed by the wind, dropping showers of flowers, seemed to perfume that mountain with a fragrance like honey and the spring season.
मधुपुष्परजःपृक्तं गन्धमादाय पुष्कलम् ।
प्रववौ वर्धयन् कामं रावणस्य सुखो ऽनिलः ॥६॥
6. madhupuṣparajaḥpṛktaṃ gandhamādāya puṣkalam ,
pravavau vardhayan kāmaṃ rāvaṇasya sukho'nilaḥ.

6. A pleasant wind blew, carrying an abundant fragrance mingled with honey and flower pollen, thus intensifying Ravana's desire (kāma).
गेयात् पुष्पसमृद्ध्या च शैत्याद्वायोर्गुणैर्गिरेः ।
प्रवृत्तायां रजन्यां च चन्द्रस्योदयनेन च ॥७॥
7. geyāt puṣpasamṛddhyā ca śaityādvāyorguṇairgireḥ ,
pravṛttāyāṃ rajanyāṃ ca candrasyodayanena ca.

7. Influenced by the singing, the abundance of flowers, the coolness of the wind, and the inherent qualities of the mountain, and with the onset of night and the rising of the moon...
रावणः सुमहावीर्यः कामबाणवशं गतः ।
विनिश्वस्य विनिश्वस्य शशिनं समवैक्षत ॥८॥
8. rāvaṇaḥ sumahāvīryaḥ kāmabāṇavaśaṃ gataḥ ,
viniśvasya viniśvasya śaśinaṃ samavaikṣata.

8. Ravana, despite his immense power, had fallen under the sway of the arrows of desire (kāma). Sighing repeatedly, he gazed at the moon.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र दिव्यपुष्पविभूषिता ।
सर्वाप्सरोवरा रम्भा पूर्णचन्द्रनिभानना ॥९॥
9. etasminnantare tatra divyapuṣpavibhūṣitā ,
sarvāpsarovarā rambhā pūrṇacandranibhānanā.

9. In the meantime, there appeared Rambhā, the foremost among all Apsarases, adorned with divine flowers and possessing a face like a full moon.
कृतैर्विशेषकैरार्द्रैः षडर्तुकुसुमोत्सवैः ।
नीलं सतोयमेघाभं वस्त्रं समवगुण्ठिता ॥१०॥
10. kṛtairviśeṣakairārdraiḥ ṣaḍartukusumotsavaiḥ ,
nīlaṃ satoyameghābhaṃ vastraṃ samavaguṇṭhitā.

10. She was adorned with fresh tilaka marks and festive flowers of the six seasons, and she was veiled in a blue garment that resembled a water-laden cloud.
यस्य वक्त्रं शशिनिभं भ्रुवौ चापनिभे शुभे ।
ऊरू करिकराकारौ करौ पल्लवकोमलौ ।
सैन्यमध्येन गच्छन्ती रावणेनोपलक्षिता ॥११॥
11. yasya vaktraṃ śaśinibhaṃ bhruvau cāpanibhe śubhe ,
ūrū karikarākārau karau pallavakomalau ,
sainyamadhyena gacchantī rāvaṇenopalakṣitā.

11. Her face was like the moon, her two beautiful eyebrows resembled bows, her thighs were shaped like elephant trunks, and her hands were tender as young sprouts. As she was moving through the army, she was noticed by Rāvaṇa.
तां समुत्थाय रक्षेन्द्रः कामबाणबलार्दितः ।
करे गृहीत्वा गच्छन्तीं स्मयमानो ऽभ्यभाषत ॥१२॥
12. tāṃ samutthāya rakṣendraḥ kāmabāṇabalārditaḥ ,
kare gṛhītvā gacchantīṃ smayamāno'bhyabhāṣata.
12. tām samutthāya rakṣendraḥ kāmabāṇabalārditaḥ
kare gṛhītvā gacchantīm smayamānaḥ abhyabhāṣata

12. The lord of the Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), afflicted by the power of Cupid's arrows, rose up. Smiling, he seized her hand as she was going and spoke to her.
क्व गच्छसि वरारोहे कां सिद्धिं भजसे स्वयम् ।
कस्याभ्युदयकालो ऽयं यस्त्वां समुपभोक्ष्यते ॥१३॥
13. kva gacchasi varārohe kāṃ siddhiṃ bhajase svayam ,
kasyābhyudayakālo'yaṃ yastvāṃ samupabhokṣyate.
13. kva gacchasi varārohe kām siddhim bhajase svayam
kasyāḥ abhyudaya-kālaḥ ayam yaḥ tvām samupabhokṣyate
13. varārohe kva gacchasi kām siddhim svayam bhajase
ayam kasyāḥ abhyudaya-kālaḥ yaḥ tvām samupabhokṣyate
13. O beautiful lady, where are you going? What perfection (siddhi) do you yourself seek? Whose time of rise is this, who will fully experience you?
तवाननरसस्याद्य पद्मोत्पलसुगन्धिनः ।
सुधामृतरसस्येव को ऽद्य तृप्तिं गमिष्यति ॥१४॥
14. tavānanarasasyādya padmotpalasugandhinaḥ ,
sudhāmṛtarasasyeva ko'dya tṛptiṃ gamiṣyati.
14. tava ānana-rasasya adya padma-utpala-sugandhinaḥ
sudhā-amṛta-rasasya iva kaḥ adya tṛptim gamiṣyati
14. adya kaḥ tava padma-utpala-sugandhinaḥ ānana-rasasya
sudhā-amṛta-rasasya iva adya tṛptim gamiṣyati
14. Who today will find satisfaction in the essence of your face, fragrant like a lotus and a water lily, like the taste of nectar?
स्वर्णकुम्भनिभौ पीनौ शुभौ भीरु निरन्तरौ ।
कस्योरस्थलसंस्पर्शं दास्यतस्ते कुचाविमौ ॥१५॥
15. svarṇakumbhanibhau pīnau śubhau bhīru nirantarau ,
kasyorasthalasaṃsparśaṃ dāsyataste kucāvimau.
15. svarṇa-kumbha-nibhau pīnau śubhau bhīru nirantarau
kasya urasthala-saṃsparśam dāsyataḥ te kucau imau
15. bhīru imau te svarṇa-kumbha-nibhau pīnau śubhau
nirantarau kucau kasya urasthala-saṃsparśam dāsyataḥ
15. O timid one, these two plump, beautiful, and close-set breasts of yours, resembling golden pitchers, to whose chest will they grant their touch?
सुवर्णचक्रप्रतिमं स्वर्णदामचितं पृथु ।
अध्यारोक्ष्यति कस्ते ऽद्य स्वर्गं जघनरूपिणम् ॥१६॥
16. suvarṇacakrapratimaṃ svarṇadāmacitaṃ pṛthu ,
adhyārokṣyati kaste'dya svargaṃ jaghanarūpiṇam.
16. suvarṇa-cakra-pratimam suvarṇa-dāma-citam pṛthu
adhyārokṣyati kaḥ te adya svargam jaghana-rūpiṇam
16. adya kaḥ te suvarṇa-cakra-pratimam suvarṇa-dāma-citam
pṛthu jaghana-rūpiṇam svargam adhyārokṣyati
16. Who today will ascend your broad, heaven-like hips, which resemble a golden disc and are adorned with golden garlands?
मद्विशिष्टः पुमान् को ऽन्यः शक्रो विष्णुरथाश्विनौ ।
मामतीत्य हि यस्य त्वं यासि भीरु न शोभनम् ॥१७॥
17. madviśiṣṭaḥ pumān ko'nyaḥ śakro viṣṇurathāśvinau ,
māmatītya hi yasya tvaṃ yāsi bhīru na śobhanam.
17. madviśiṣṭaḥ pumān kaḥ anyaḥ śakraḥ viṣṇuḥ atha aśvinau
mām atītya hi yasya tvam yāsi bhīru na śobhanam
17. bhīru tvam mām atītya yasya yāsi hi na śobhanam.
kaḥ anyaḥ pumān madviśiṣṭaḥ śakraḥ viṣṇuḥ atha aśvinau.
17. What other man is superior to me? Is it Indra, Vishnu, or the Ashvins? Indeed, O timid one, it is not proper that you bypass me and go to someone else.
विश्रम त्वं पृथुश्रोणि शिलातलमिदं शुभम् ।
त्रैलोक्ये यः प्रभुश्चैव तुल्यो मम न विद्यते ॥१८॥
18. viśrama tvaṃ pṛthuśroṇi śilātalamidaṃ śubham ,
trailokye yaḥ prabhuścaiva tulyo mama na vidyate.
18. viśrama tvam pṛthuśroṇi śilātalam idam śubham
trailokye yaḥ prabhuḥ ca eva tulyaḥ mama na vidyate
18. pṛthuśroṇi tvam idam śubham śilātalam viśrama.
trailokye yaḥ prabhuḥ ca eva mama tulyaḥ na vidyate.
18. O broad-hipped one, rest on this auspicious rock surface. There is no lord in the three worlds who is my equal.
तदेष प्राञ्जलिः प्रह्वो याचते त्वां दशाननः ।
यः प्रभुश्चापि भर्ता च त्रैलोक्यस्य भजस्व माम् ॥१९॥
19. tadeṣa prāñjaliḥ prahvo yācate tvāṃ daśānanaḥ ,
yaḥ prabhuścāpi bhartā ca trailokyasya bhajasva mām.
19. tat eṣaḥ prāñjaliḥ prahvaḥ yācate tvām daśānanaḥ yaḥ
prabhuḥ ca api bhartā ca trailokyasya bhajasva mām
19. tat eṣaḥ daśānanaḥ prāñjaliḥ prahvaḥ tvām yācate.
yaḥ ca prabhuḥ api ca trailokyasya bhartā,
mām bhajasva.
19. Therefore, this ten-headed one, with folded hands and humbly bowed, implores you. He who is the lord and also the sustainer of the three worlds – devote yourself to me!
एवमुक्ताब्रवीद् रम्भा वेपमाना कृताञ्जलिः ।
प्रसीद नार्हसे वक्तुमीदृशं त्वं हि मे गुरुः ॥२०॥
20. evamuktābravīd rambhā vepamānā kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
prasīda nārhase vaktumīdṛśaṃ tvaṃ hi me guruḥ.
20. evam uktā abravīt rambhā vepamānā kṛtāñjaliḥ
prasīda na arhase vaktum īdṛśam tvam hi me guruḥ
20. evam uktā rambhā vepamānā kṛtāñjaliḥ abravīt.
prasīda.
tvam īdṛśam vaktum na arhase,
hi tvam me guruḥ.
20. Thus addressed, Rambha, trembling and with folded hands, spoke: 'Be gracious! You ought not to speak in such a way, for you are indeed my venerable elder.'
अन्येभ्यो ऽपि त्वया रक्ष्या प्राप्नुयां धर्षणं यदि ।
धर्मतश्च स्नुषा ते ऽहं तत्त्वमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥२१॥
21. anyebhyo'pi tvayā rakṣyā prāpnuyāṃ dharṣaṇaṃ yadi ,
dharmataśca snuṣā te'haṃ tattvametadbravīmi te.
21. anyebhyaḥ api tvayā rakṣyā prāpnuyām dharṣaṇam yadi
dharmataḥ ca snuṣā te aham tattvam etat bravīmi te
21. yadi dharṣaṇam prāpnuyām,
tvayā anyebhyaḥ api rakṣyā.
ca dharmataḥ aham te snuṣā.
te etat tattvam bravīmi.
21. You must protect me even from others, should I suffer molestation. Moreover, by natural law (dharma), I am your daughter-in-law. I tell you this truth.
अब्रवीत्तां दशग्रीवश्चरणाधोमुखीं स्थिताम् ।
सुतस्य यदि मे भार्या ततस्त्वं मे स्नुषा भवेः ॥२२॥
22. abravīttāṃ daśagrīvaścaraṇādhomukhīṃ sthitām ,
sutasya yadi me bhāryā tatastvaṃ me snuṣā bhaveḥ.
22. abravīt tām daśagrīvaḥ caraṇādhomukhīm sthitām
sutasya yadi me bhāryā tataḥ tvam me snuṣā bhaveḥ
22. daśagrīvaḥ caraṇādhomukhīm sthitām tām abravīt: "yadi tvam me sutasya bhāryā,
tataḥ me snuṣā bhaveḥ.
"
22. Daśagrīva said to her, who stood with her face cast down towards his feet: 'If you are the wife of my son, then you would be my daughter-in-law.'
बाढमित्येव सा रम्भा प्राह रावणमुत्तरम् ।
धर्मतस्ते सुतस्याहं भार्या राक्षसपुंगव ॥२३॥
23. bāḍhamityeva sā rambhā prāha rāvaṇamuttaram ,
dharmataste sutasyāhaṃ bhāryā rākṣasapuṃgava.
23. bāḍham iti eva sā rambhā prāha rāvaṇam uttaram
dharmataḥ te sutasya aham bhāryā rākṣasapuṅgava
23. sā rambhā rāvaṇam uttaram prāha,
"bāḍham iti eva! he rākṣasapuṅgava,
dharmataḥ aham te sutasya bhāryā.
"
23. That Rambhā then replied to Rāvaṇa: 'Exactly so! By natural law (dharma), O chief of demons, I am the wife of your son.'
पुत्रः प्रियतरः प्राणैर्भ्रातुर्वैश्रवणस्य ते ।
ख्यातो यस्त्रिषु लोकेषु नलकूबर इत्यसौ ॥२४॥
24. putraḥ priyataraḥ prāṇairbhrāturvaiśravaṇasya te ,
khyāto yastriṣu lokeṣu nalakūbara ityasau.
24. putraḥ priyataraḥ prāṇaiḥ bhrātuḥ vaiśravaṇasya
te khyātaḥ yaḥ triṣu lokeṣu nalakūbaraḥ iti asau
24. asau te bhrātuḥ vaiśravaṇasya putraḥ,
prāṇaiḥ priyataraḥ.
yaḥ nalakūbaraḥ iti triṣu lokeṣu khyātaḥ.
24. He is Nalakūbara, the son of your brother Vaiśravaṇa, dearer to him than life itself, and renowned in the three worlds.
धर्मतो यो भवेद्विप्रः क्षत्रियो वीर्यतो भवेत् ।
क्रोधाद् यश्च भवेदग्निः क्षान्त्या च वसुधासमः ॥२५॥
25. dharmato yo bhavedvipraḥ kṣatriyo vīryato bhavet ,
krodhād yaśca bhavedagniḥ kṣāntyā ca vasudhāsamaḥ.
25. dharmataḥ yaḥ bhavet vipraḥ kṣatriyaḥ vīryataḥ bhavet
krodhāt yaḥ ca bhavet agniḥ kṣāntyā ca vasudhāsamaḥ
25. One who becomes a brahmin through his inherent nature (dharma), a kshatriya through valor, who becomes like fire due to anger, and is like the earth through forgiveness.
तस्यास्मि कृतसंकेता लोकपालसुतस्य वै ।
तमुद्दिश्य च मे सर्वं विभूषणमिदं कृतम् ॥२६॥
26. tasyāsmi kṛtasaṃketā lokapālasutasya vai ,
tamuddiśya ca me sarvaṃ vibhūṣaṇamidaṃ kṛtam.
26. tasya asmi kṛtasaṃketā lokapālasutasya vai
tam uddiśya ca me sarvam vibhūṣaṇam idam kṛtam
26. I am indeed pledged to him, the son of the world-protector. All these adornments of mine were made specifically for him.
यस्य तस्य हि नान्यस्य भावो मां प्रति तिष्ठति ।
तेन सत्येन मां राजन्मोक्तुमर्हस्यरिंदम ॥२७॥
27. yasya tasya hi nānyasya bhāvo māṃ prati tiṣṭhati ,
tena satyena māṃ rājanmoktumarhasyariṃdama.
27. yasya tasya hi na anyasya bhāvaḥ mām prati tiṣṭhati
tena satyena mām rājan moktum arhasi ariṃdama
27. Indeed, my devotion (bhāva) is fixed on him alone, and not on anyone else. By that truth, O King, O subduer of enemies, you must release me.
स हि तिष्ठति धर्मात्मा साम्प्रतं मत्समुत्सुकः ।
तन्न विघ्नं सुतस्येह कर्तुमर्हसि मुञ्च माम् ॥२८॥
28. sa hi tiṣṭhati dharmātmā sāmprataṃ matsamutsukaḥ ,
tanna vighnaṃ sutasyeha kartumarhasi muñca mām.
28. saḥ hi tiṣṭhati dharmātmā sāmpratam mat samutsukaḥ
tat na vighnam sutasya iha kartum arhasi muñca mām
28. Indeed, that righteous soul (dharmātman) is now longing for me. Therefore, you ought not to create an obstacle for your son in this matter. Release me!
सद्भिराचरितं मार्गं गच्छ राक्षसपुंगव ।
माननीयो मया हि त्वं लालनीया तथास्मि ते ॥२९॥
29. sadbhirācaritaṃ mārgaṃ gaccha rākṣasapuṃgava ,
mānanīyo mayā hi tvaṃ lālanīyā tathāsmi te.
29. sadbhiḥ ācaritam mārgam gaccha rākṣasapuṃgava
mānaniyaḥ mayā hi tvam lālanīyā tathā asmi te
29. rākṣasapuṃgava sadbhiḥ ācaritam mārgam gaccha
hi tvam mayā mānaniyaḥ tathā te lālanīyā asmi
29. O foremost among the rākṣasas, follow the path practiced by the virtuous. Indeed, you are worthy of my respect, and similarly, I am worthy of your affection.
एवं ब्रुवाणां रम्भां तां धर्मार्थसहितं वचः ।
निर्भर्त्स्य राक्षसो मोहात् प्रतिगृह्य बलाद्बली ।
काममोहाभिसंरब्धो मैथुनायोपचक्रमे ॥३०॥
30. evaṃ bruvāṇāṃ rambhāṃ tāṃ dharmārthasahitaṃ vacaḥ ,
nirbhartsya rākṣaso mohāt pratigṛhya balādbalī ,
kāmamohābhisaṃrabdho maithunāyopacakrame.
30. evam bruvāṇām rambhām tām dharmārthasahitam
vacaḥ nirbhartsya rākṣasaḥ
mohāt pratigṛhya balāt balī
kāmamohābisaṃrabdhaḥ maithunāya upacakrame
30. evam bruvāṇām dharmārthasahitam vacaḥ
tām rambhām nirbhartsya balī
rākṣasaḥ mohāt balāt pratigṛhya

30. Thus, the powerful rākṣasa, agitated by lust and delusion, rebuked Rambhā, who was speaking words containing principles of natural law (dharma) and purpose. Out of infatuation, he forcibly seized her and proceeded to have sexual intercourse.
सा विमुक्ता ततो रम्भा भ्रष्टमाल्यविभूषणा ।
गजेन्द्राक्रीडमथिता नदीवाकुलतां गता ॥३१॥
31. sā vimuktā tato rambhā bhraṣṭamālyavibhūṣaṇā ,

31. sā vimuktā tataḥ rambhā bhraṣṭamālyavibhūṣaṇā
gajendrākīḍamathitā nadī iva ākulatām gatā

31. Upon being released, Rambhā, with her garlands and ornaments disarranged, became agitated, like a river churned by the sport of a mighty elephant.
सा वेपमाना लज्जन्ती भीता करकृताञ्जलिः ।
नलकूबरमासाद्य पादयोर्निपपात ह ॥३२॥
32. sā vepamānā lajjantī bhītā karakṛtāñjaliḥ ,
nalakūbaramāsādya pādayornipapāta ha.

nalakūbaram āsādya pādayoḥ nipapāta ha

32. Trembling, ashamed, and frightened, she clasped her hands in supplication, approached Nalakūbara, and fell at his feet.
तदवस्थां च तां दृष्ट्वा महात्मा नलकूबरः ।
अब्रवीत् किमिदं भद्रे पादयोः पतितासि मे ॥३३॥
33. tadavasthāṃ ca tāṃ dṛṣṭvā mahātmā nalakūbaraḥ ,
abravīt kimidaṃ bhadre pādayoḥ patitāsi me.
33. tadavasthām ca tām dṛṣṭvā mahātmā nalakūbaraḥ
abravīt kim idam bhadre pādayoḥ patitā asi me
33. mahātmā nalakūbaraḥ ca tām tadavasthām dṛṣṭvā
abravīt bhadre kim idam me pādayoḥ patitā asi
33. And seeing her in that state, the great-souled Nalakūbara said, 'What is this, O good lady? You have fallen at my feet.'
सा तु निश्वसमाना च वेपमानाथ साञ्जलिः ।
तस्मै सर्वं यथातथ्यमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे ॥३४॥
34. sā tu niśvasamānā ca vepamānātha sāñjaliḥ ,
tasmai sarvaṃ yathātathyamākhyātumupacakrame.
34. sā tu niśvasamānā ca vepamānā atha sāñjaliḥ
tasmai sarvam yathātathyam ākhyātum upacakrame
34. tu sā niśvasamānā ca vepamānā atha sāñjaliḥ

34. But she, sighing and trembling, then with joined palms, began to narrate everything to him exactly as it had happened.
एष देव दशग्रीवः प्राप्तो गन्तुं त्रिविष्टपम् ।
तेन सैन्यसहायेन निशेह परिणाम्यते ॥३५॥
35. eṣa deva daśagrīvaḥ prāpto gantuṃ triviṣṭapam ,
tena sainyasahāyena niśeha pariṇāmyate.
35. eṣa deva daśagrīvaḥ prāptaḥ gantum triviṣṭapam
tena sainyasahāyena niśā iha pariṇāmyate
35. deva eṣa daśagrīvaḥ triviṣṭapam gantum prāptaḥ
tena sainyasahāyena iha niśā pariṇāmyate
35. This lord, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa), has arrived to ascend to heaven. Accompanied by his army, he is bringing the night here to an end (spending the night).
आयान्ती तेन दृष्टास्मि त्वत्सकाशमरिंदम ।
गृहीत्वा तेन पृष्टास्मि कस्य त्वमिति रक्षसा ॥३६॥
36. āyāntī tena dṛṣṭāsmi tvatsakāśamariṃdama ,
gṛhītvā tena pṛṣṭāsmi kasya tvamiti rakṣasā.
36. āyāntī tena dṛṣṭā asmi tvat sakāśam arim-dama
gṛhītvā tena pṛṣṭā asmi kasya tvam iti rakṣasā
36. arim-dama tena āyāntī tvat sakāśam dṛṣṭā asmi
tena rakṣasā gṛhītvā tvam kasya iti pṛṣṭā asmi
36. O destroyer of foes, I was seen by him (Rāvaṇa) as I was coming near you. Having seized me, I was then asked by that rākṣasa, 'Whose are you?'
मया तु सर्वं यत् सत्यं तद्धि तस्मै निवेदितम् ।
काममोहाभिभूतात्मा नाश्रौषीत्तद्वचो मम ॥३७॥
37. mayā tu sarvaṃ yat satyaṃ taddhi tasmai niveditam ,
kāmamohābhibhūtātmā nāśrauṣīttadvaco mama.
37. mayā tu sarvam yat satyam tat hi tasmai niveditam
kāmamohābhibhūtātmā na aśrauṣīt tat vacaḥ mama
37. mayā tu yat sarvam satyam tat hi tasmai niveditam
kāmamohābhibhūtātmā mama tat vacaḥ na aśrauṣīt
37. I indeed communicated to him all that was true. However, his mind, overcome by desire (kāma) and delusion (moha), did not listen to my words.
याच्यमानो मया देव स्नुषा ते ऽहमिति प्रभो ।
तत् सर्वं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा बलात्तेनास्मि धर्षिता ॥३८॥
38. yācyamāno mayā deva snuṣā te'hamiti prabho ,
tat sarvaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā balāttenāsmi dharṣitā.
38. yācyamānaḥ mayā deva snuṣā te aham iti prabho tat
sarvam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā balāt tena asmi dharṣitā
38. mayā deva prabho te snuṣā aham iti yācyamānaḥ api
tat sarvam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā tena balāt dharṣitā asmi
38. Even though I implored him, saying, "O lord, O god, I am your daughter-in-law!", he disregarded all that and I was forcibly violated by him.
एवं त्वमपराधं मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि मानद ।
न हि तुल्यं बलं सौम्य स्त्रियाश्च पुरुषस्य च ॥३९॥
39. evaṃ tvamaparādhaṃ me kṣantumarhasi mānada ,
na hi tulyaṃ balaṃ saumya striyāśca puruṣasya ca.
39. evam tvam aparādham me kṣantum arhasi mānada na
hi tulyam balam saumya striyāḥ ca puruṣasya ca
39. evam mānada tvam me aparādham kṣantum arhasi hi
saumya striyāḥ ca puruṣasya ca balam na tulyam
39. Therefore, O giver of honor, you ought to forgive my offense. For truly, O gentle one, the strength of a woman and that of a man are not equal.
एवं श्रुत्वा तु संक्रुद्धस्तदा वैश्वरणात्मजः ।
धर्षणां तां परां श्रुत्वा ध्यानं संप्रविवेश ह ॥४०॥
40. evaṃ śrutvā tu saṃkruddhastadā vaiśvaraṇātmajaḥ ,
dharṣaṇāṃ tāṃ parāṃ śrutvā dhyānaṃ saṃpraviveśa ha.
40. evam śrutvā tu saṃkruddhaḥ tadā vaiśvaraṇātmajaḥ
dharṣaṇām tām parām śrutvā dhyānam saṃpraviveśa ha
40. evam śrutvā tu tadā vaiśvaraṇātmajaḥ saṃkruddhaḥ
tām parām dharṣaṇām śrutvā dhyānam saṃpraviveśa ha
40. Having heard this, Kubera's son became greatly enraged at that moment. After hearing about that severe violation, he entered into deep meditation (dhyāna).
तस्य तत् कर्म विज्ञाय तदा वैश्रवणात्मजः ।
मुहूर्ताद् रोषताम्राक्षस्तोयं जग्राह पाणिना ॥४१॥
41. tasya tat karma vijñāya tadā vaiśravaṇātmajaḥ ,
muhūrtād roṣatāmrākṣastoyaṃ jagrāha pāṇinā.
41. tasya tat karma vijñāya tadā vaiśravaṇātmajaḥ
muhūrtāt roṣatāmrākṣaḥ toyam jagrāha pāṇinā
41. Then, having understood that action (karma) of his, the son of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera), his eyes red with anger, instantly took water in his hand.
गृहीत्वा सलिलं दिव्यमुपस्पृश्य यथाविधि ।
उत्ससर्ज तदा शापं राक्षसेन्द्राय दारुणम् ॥४२॥
42. gṛhītvā salilaṃ divyamupaspṛśya yathāvidhi ,
utsasarja tadā śāpaṃ rākṣasendrāya dāruṇam.
42. gṛhītvā salilam divyam upaspṛśya yathāvidhi
utsasarja tadā śāpam rākṣasendrāya dāruṇam
42. Having taken the sacred water and performed the purifying ritual according to prescription, he then uttered a terrible curse upon the lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa).
अकामा तेन यस्मात्त्वं बलाद्भद्रे प्रधर्षिता ।
तस्मात् स युवतीमन्यां नाकामामुपयास्यति ॥४३॥
43. akāmā tena yasmāttvaṃ balādbhadre pradharṣitā ,
tasmāt sa yuvatīmanyāṃ nākāmāmupayāsyati.
43. akāmā tena yasmāt tvam balāt bhadre pradharṣitā
tasmāt sa yuvatīm anyām na akāmām upayāsyati
43. Because, O auspicious one, you were assaulted by him unwillingly and by force, therefore he shall not approach any other young woman who is unwilling.
यदा त्वकामां कामार्तो धर्षयिष्यति योषितम् ।
मूर्धा तु सप्तधा तस्य शकलीभविता तदा ॥४४॥
44. yadā tvakāmāṃ kāmārto dharṣayiṣyati yoṣitam ,
mūrdhā tu saptadhā tasya śakalībhavitā tadā.
44. yadā tu akāmām kāmārtaḥ dharṣayiṣyati yoṣitam
mūrdhā tu saptadhā tasya śakalībhavitā tadā
44. When he, overcome by desire, assaults an unwilling woman, then his head will shatter into seven pieces.
तस्मिन्नुदाहृते शापे ज्वलिताग्निसमप्रभे ।
देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुः पुष्पवृष्टिश्च खाच्च्युता ॥४५॥
45. tasminnudāhṛte śāpe jvalitāgnisamaprabhe ,
devadundubhayo neduḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiśca khāccyutā.
45. tasmin udāhṛte śāpe jvalitāgnisamaprabhe
devadundubhayaḥ neduḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ ca khāt cyutā
45. tasmin jvalitāgnisamaprabhe śāpe udāhṛte,
devadundubhayaḥ neduḥ ca khāt puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ cyutā
45. When that curse, formidable as a blazing fire, was pronounced, divine drums resounded, and a shower of flowers fell from the sky.
प्रजापतिमुखाश्चापि सर्वे देवाः प्रहर्षिताः ।
ज्ञात्वा लोकगतिं सर्वां तस्य मृत्युं च रक्षसः ॥४६॥
46. prajāpatimukhāścāpi sarve devāḥ praharṣitāḥ ,
jñātvā lokagatiṃ sarvāṃ tasya mṛtyuṃ ca rakṣasaḥ.
46. prajāpatimukhāḥ ca api sarve devāḥ praharṣitāḥ
jñātvā lokagatim sarvām tasya mṛtyum ca rakṣasaḥ
46. prajāpatimukhāḥ ca api sarve devāḥ,
sarvām lokagatim ca tasya rakṣasaḥ mṛtyum jñātvā,
praharṣitāḥ
46. And all the gods, led by Prajāpati, were greatly delighted, having understood the entire course of the world and the death of that demon.
श्रुत्वा तु स दशग्रीवस्तं शापं रोमहर्षणम् ।
नारीषु मैथुनं भावं नाकामास्वभ्यरोचयत् ॥४७॥
47. śrutvā tu sa daśagrīvastaṃ śāpaṃ romaharṣaṇam ,
nārīṣu maithunaṃ bhāvaṃ nākāmāsvabhyarocayat.
47. śrutvā tu saḥ daśagrīvaḥ tam śāpam romaharṣaṇam
nārīṣu maithunam bhāvam na akāmāsu abhyarocayat
47. tu saḥ daśagrīvaḥ tam romaharṣaṇam śāpam śrutvā,
akāmāsu nārīṣu maithunam bhāvam na abhyarocayat
47. But that Daśagrīva, having heard that hair-raising curse, no longer desired sexual union with unwilling women.
