तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कुशनाभस्य धीमतः ।
शिरोभिश्चरणौ स्पृष्ट्वा कन्याशतमभाषत ॥१॥

1. Having heard those words of the wise Kuśanābha, the hundred daughters touched his feet with their heads and then spoke.
वायुः सर्वात्मको राजन्प्रधर्षयितुमिच्छति ।
अशुभं मार्गमास्थाय न धर्मं प्रत्यवेक्षते ॥२॥
2. vāyuḥ sarvātmako rājanpradharṣayitumicchati ,
aśubhaṃ mārgamāsthāya na dharmaṃ pratyavekṣate.
2. vāyuḥ sarvātmakaḥ rājan pradharṣayitum icchati
aśubham mārgam āsthāya na dharmam pratyavekṣate

2. O King, Vāyu, the wind god who pervades all beings, desires to assault (us). He has taken an inauspicious path and does not regard the natural law (dharma).
पितृमत्यः स्म भद्रं ते स्वच्छन्दे न वयं स्थिताः ।
पितरं नो वृणीष्व त्वं यदि नो दास्यते तव ॥३॥
3. pitṛmatyaḥ sma bhadraṃ te svacchande na vayaṃ sthitāḥ ,
pitaraṃ no vṛṇīṣva tvaṃ yadi no dāsyate tava.
3. pitṛmatyaḥ sma bhadram te svacchande na vayam sthitāḥ
pitaram naḥ vṛṇīṣva tvam yadi naḥ dāsyate tava
3. te bhadram,
vayam pitṛmatyaḥ sma,
na svacchande sthitāḥ tvam naḥ pitaram vṛṇīṣva,
yadi tava naḥ dāsyate
3. We have a father; may good fortune be upon you. We are not free to act according to our own will. You (O Wind) should seek our father's consent, if he will give us to you.
तेन पापानुबन्धेन वचनं न प्रतीच्छता ।
एवं ब्रुवन्त्यः सर्वाः स्म वायुना निहता भृषम् ॥४॥
4. tena pāpānubandhena vacanaṃ na pratīcchatā ,
evaṃ bruvantyaḥ sarvāḥ sma vāyunā nihatā bhṛṣam.

bruvantyaḥ sarvāḥ sma vāyunā nihatāḥ bhṛśam

4. Due to his sinful attachment and his refusal to accept their words, all of us, speaking thus, were severely struck down by Vāyu.
तासां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा परमधार्मिकः ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजाः कन्याशतमनुत्तमम् ॥५॥
5. tāsāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rājā paramadhārmikaḥ ,
pratyuvāca mahātejāḥ kanyāśatamanuttamam.
5. tāsām tat vacanam śrutvā rājā paramadhārmikaḥ

5. Having heard their words, the supremely righteous (dharma) and greatly radiant king replied to the excellent hundred maidens.
क्षान्तं क्षमावतां पुत्र्यः कर्तव्यं सुमहत् कृतम् ।
ऐकमत्यमुपागम्य कुलं चावेक्षितं मम ॥६॥
6. kṣāntaṃ kṣamāvatāṃ putryaḥ kartavyaṃ sumahat kṛtam ,
aikamatyamupāgamya kulaṃ cāvekṣitaṃ mama.
6. kṣāntam kṣamāvatām putryaḥ kartavyam sumahat
kṛtam aikamatyam upāgamya kulam ca avekṣitam mama
6. putryaḥ kṣamāvatām kṣāntam sumahat kartavyam

6. O daughters, you have accomplished a very great duty through your patience (kṣāntam), which is characteristic of the forgiving (kṣamāvat). By attaining unity, my family (kula) has also been protected.
अलंकारो हि नारीणां क्षमा तु पुरुषस्य वा ।
दुष्करं तच्च वः क्षान्तं त्रिदशेषु विशेषतः ॥७॥
7. alaṃkāro hi nārīṇāṃ kṣamā tu puruṣasya vā ,
duṣkaraṃ tacca vaḥ kṣāntaṃ tridaśeṣu viśeṣataḥ.
7. alaṅkāraḥ hi nārīṇām kṣamā tu puruṣasya vā
duṣkaram tat ca vaḥ kṣāntam tridaśeṣu viśeṣataḥ
7. hi kṣamā nārīṇām tu puruṣasya vā alaṅkāraḥ ca
tat duṣkaram kṣāntam vaḥ tridaśeṣu viśeṣataḥ
7. Indeed, forgiveness (kṣamā) is an ornament for women, and likewise for men (puruṣa). That difficult act of forgiveness (kṣāntam) has been performed by you, especially in relation to the gods.
यादृशीर्वः क्षमा पुत्र्यः सर्वासामविशेषतः ।
क्षमा दानं क्षमा यज्ञः क्षमा सत्यं च पुत्रिकाः ॥८॥
8. yādṛśīrvaḥ kṣamā putryaḥ sarvāsāmaviśeṣataḥ ,
kṣamā dānaṃ kṣamā yajñaḥ kṣamā satyaṃ ca putrikāḥ.
8. yādṛśīḥ vaḥ kṣamā putryaḥ sarvāsām aviśeṣataḥ
kṣamā dānam kṣamā yajñaḥ kṣamā satyam ca putrikāḥ
8. putryaḥ putrikāḥ vaḥ sarvāsām aviśeṣataḥ yādṛśīḥ
kṣamā kṣamā dānam kṣamā yajñaḥ ca kṣamā satyam
8. O daughters, such is your forbearance (kṣamā), especially among all of you, without distinction. Forbearance (kṣamā) is charity (dāna), forbearance (kṣamā) is a Vedic ritual (yajña), and forbearance (kṣamā) is truth, O little daughters.
क्षमा यशः क्षमा धर्मः क्षमायां विष्ठितं जगत् ।
विसृज्य कन्याः काकुत्स्थ राजा त्रिदशविक्रमः ॥९॥
9. kṣamā yaśaḥ kṣamā dharmaḥ kṣamāyāṃ viṣṭhitaṃ jagat ,
visṛjya kanyāḥ kākutstha rājā tridaśavikramaḥ.
9. kṣamā yaśaḥ kṣamā dharmaḥ kṣamāyām viṣṭhitam jagat

9. kṣamā yaśaḥ,
kṣamā dharmaḥ,
(hi) jagat kṣamāyām viṣṭhitam (he) kākutstha,
rājā tridaśavikramaḥ kanyāḥ visṛjya (atha)
9. Forgiveness (kṣamā) is fame, forgiveness (kṣamā) is the intrinsic nature (dharma) of existence, and indeed, the entire world (jagat) is founded upon forgiveness (kṣamā). Having thus given away his daughters, O Kakutstha, the king, who possessed the valor of the gods...
मन्त्रज्ञो मन्त्रयामास प्रदानं सह मन्त्रिभिः ।
देशे काले प्रदानस्य सदृशे प्रतिपादनम् ॥१०॥
10. mantrajño mantrayāmāsa pradānaṃ saha mantribhiḥ ,
deśe kāle pradānasya sadṛśe pratipādanam.
10. mantrajñaḥ mantrayāmāsa pradānam saha mantribhiḥ
| deśe kāle pradānasya sadṛśe pratipādanam
10. mantrajñaḥ (rājā) mantribhiḥ saha pradānam mantrayāmāsa
pradānasya sadṛśe deśe kāle ca pratipādanam (mantrayāmāsa)
10. The king, who was skilled in counsel, deliberated with his ministers concerning the bestowing (of the daughters) in a suitable place and at an appropriate time for the giving.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु चूली नाम महामुनिः ।
ऊर्ध्वरेताः शुभाचारो ब्राह्मं तप उपागमत् ॥११॥
11. etasminneva kāle tu cūlī nāma mahāmuniḥ ,
ūrdhvaretāḥ śubhācāro brāhmaṃ tapa upāgamat.
11. etasmin eva kāle tu cūlī nāma mahāmuniḥ |
ūrdhvaretāḥ śubhācāraḥ brāhmam tapaḥ upāgamat
11. etasmin kāle eva tu cūlī nāma mahāmuniḥ,
ūrdhvaretāḥ śubhācāraḥ (san),
brāhmam tapaḥ upāgamat.
11. Indeed, at that very time, a great sage (mahāmuni) named Cūlī, whose seminal energy flowed upwards (ūrdhvaretas) and whose conduct was pure, began to practice Brahmanical asceticism (tapas).
तप्यन्तं तमृषिं तत्र गन्धर्वी पर्युपासते ।
सोमदा नाम भद्रं ते ऊर्मिला तनया तदा ॥१२॥
12. tapyantaṃ tamṛṣiṃ tatra gandharvī paryupāsate ,
somadā nāma bhadraṃ te ūrmilā tanayā tadā.
12. tapyantam tam ṛṣim tatra gandharvī paryupāsate
somadā nāma bhadram te ūrmilātanayā tadā
12. tatra somadā nāma ūrmilātanayā gandharvī tapyantam tam ṛṣim tadā paryupāsate.

12. There, a Gandharva woman named Somadā, the daughter of Ūrmilā, served that sage who was practicing severe austerities (tapas). May well-being be yours.
सा च तं प्रणता भूत्वा शुश्रूषणपरायणा ।
उवास काले धर्मिष्ठा तस्यास्तुष्टो ऽभवद्गुरुः ॥१३॥
13. sā ca taṃ praṇatā bhūtvā śuśrūṣaṇaparāyaṇā ,
uvāsa kāle dharmiṣṭhā tasyāstuṣṭo'bhavadguruḥ.
13. sā ca tam praṇatā bhūtvā śuśrūṣaṇaparāyaṇā uvāsa
kāle dharmiṣṭhā tasyāḥ tuṣṭaḥ abhavat guruḥ
13. ca sā praṇatā bhūtvā śuśrūṣaṇaparāyaṇā dharmiṣṭhā kāle uvāsa.
tasyāḥ guruḥ tuṣṭaḥ abhavat.
13. And she, having become reverent and completely devoted to service, dwelt (there) as a most righteous (dharmiṣṭhā) woman in due course. Her preceptor (guru) became pleased with her.
स च तां कालयोगेन प्रोवाच रघुनन्दन ।
परितुष्टो ऽस्मि भद्रं ते किं करोमि तव प्रियम् ॥१४॥
14. sa ca tāṃ kālayogena provāca raghunandana ,
parituṣṭo'smi bhadraṃ te kiṃ karomi tava priyam.
14. saḥ ca tām kālayogena provāca raghunandana
parituṣṭaḥ asmi bhadram te kim karomi tava priyam
14. ca raghunandana,
sa kālayogena tām provāca: "aham parituṣṭaḥ asmi.
bhadram te.
kim tava priyam karomi?"
14. And he, O descendant of Raghu (raghunandana), in due course of time (kālayoga), spoke to her: "I am greatly pleased. May it be well with you. What can I do that is pleasing to you?"
परितुष्टं मुनिं ज्ञात्वा गन्धर्वी मधुरस्वरम् ।
उवाच परमप्रीता वाक्यज्ञा वाक्यकोविदम् ॥१५॥
15. parituṣṭaṃ muniṃ jñātvā gandharvī madhurasvaram ,
uvāca paramaprītā vākyajñā vākyakovidam.
15. parituṣṭam munim jñātvā gandharvī madhurasvaram
uvāca paramaprītā vākyajñā vākyakovidam

15. Having recognized the sage, who was greatly pleased, sweet-voiced, and an expert in words, the highly delighted Gandharva woman, who was skilled in speech, spoke.
लक्ष्म्या समुदितो ब्राह्म्या ब्रह्मभूतो महातपाः ।
ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तं पुत्रमिच्छामि धार्मिकम् ॥१६॥
16. lakṣmyā samudito brāhmyā brahmabhūto mahātapāḥ ,
brāhmeṇa tapasā yuktaṃ putramicchāmi dhārmikam.
16. lakṣmyā samuditaḥ brāhmyā brahmabhūtaḥ mahātapaḥ
brāhmeṇa tapasā yuktam putram icchāmi dhārmikam
16. lakṣmyā brāhmyā samuditaḥ,
brahmabhūtaḥ,

dhārmikam putram (aham) icchāmi
16. I desire a righteous (dharma) son who is endowed with divine splendor, who has realized Brahman (brahman), who is a great ascetic, and who is united with sacred austerity (tapas).
अपतिश्चास्मि भद्रं ते भार्या चास्मि न कस्य चित् ।
ब्राह्मेणोपगतायाश्च दातुमर्हसि मे सुतम् ॥१७॥
17. apatiścāsmi bhadraṃ te bhāryā cāsmi na kasya cit ,
brāhmeṇopagatāyāśca dātumarhasi me sutam.
17. apatiḥ ca asmi bhadram te bhāryā ca asmi na kasya
cit brāhmeṇa upagatāyāḥ ca dātum arhasi me sutam
17. (aham) apatiḥ ca asmi; te bhadram (astu); ca (aham) kasya cit bhāryā na asmi.
(ataḥ) brāhmeṇa upagatāyāḥ ca me sutam dātum arhasi
17. I am without a husband - may good fortune be yours - and I am not anyone's wife. Therefore, you ought to give a son to me, who has approached you by divine (brahman) means.
तस्याः प्रसन्नो ब्रह्मर्षिर्ददौ पुत्रमनुत्तमम् ।
ब्रह्मदत्त इति ख्यातं मानसं चूलिनः सुतम् ॥१८॥
18. tasyāḥ prasanno brahmarṣirdadau putramanuttamam ,
brahmadatta iti khyātaṃ mānasaṃ cūlinaḥ sutam.
18. tasyāḥ prasannaḥ brahmarṣiḥ dadau putram anuttamam
brahmadattaḥ iti khyātam mānasam cūlinaḥ sutam
18. prasannaḥ brahmarṣiḥ tasyāḥ anuttamam putram dadau,
(yaḥ) brahmadattaḥ iti khyātam,
(tathā) cūlinaḥ mānasam sutam (ca āsīt)
18. The Brahmarshi, pleased with her, gave her an excellent son, who became known as Brahmadatta and was the mind-born son of Culin.
स राजा ब्रह्मदत्तस्तु पुरीमध्यवसत्तदा ।
काम्पिल्यां परया लक्ष्म्या देवराजो यथा दिवम् ॥१९॥
19. sa rājā brahmadattastu purīmadhyavasattadā ,
kāmpilyāṃ parayā lakṣmyā devarājo yathā divam.
19. sa rājā brahmadattaḥ tu purīm adhyavasat tadā
kāmpilyām parayā lakṣmyā devarājaḥ yathā divam
19. sa rājā brahmadattaḥ tu tadā parayā lakṣmyā kāmpilyām purīm adhyavasat,
yathā devarājaḥ divam (adhivasati)
19. That King Brahmadatta then resided in the city of Kāmpilya with great splendor, just as the king of the gods (Indra) dwells in heaven.
स बुद्धिं कृतवान् राजा कुशनाभः सुधार्मिकः ।
ब्रह्मदत्ताय काकुत्स्थ दातुं कन्याशतं तदा ॥२०॥
20. sa buddhiṃ kṛtavān rājā kuśanābhaḥ sudhārmikaḥ ,
brahmadattāya kākutstha dātuṃ kanyāśataṃ tadā.
20. saḥ buddhim kṛtavān rājā kuśanābhaḥ su-dhārmikaḥ
brahmadattāya kākutstha dātum kanyā-śatam tadā
20. kākutstha saḥ su-dhārmikaḥ rājā kuśanābhaḥ tadā
buddhim kṛtavān brahmadattāya kanyā-śatam dātum
20. O Kakutstha, that highly righteous king Kuśanābha then decided to give his hundred daughters to Brahmadatta.
तमाहूय महातेजा ब्रह्मदत्तं महीपतिः ।
ददौ कन्याशतं राजा सुप्रीतेनान्तरात्मना ॥२१॥
21. tamāhūya mahātejā brahmadattaṃ mahīpatiḥ ,
dadau kanyāśataṃ rājā suprītenāntarātmanā.
21. tam āhūya mahā-tejāḥ brahmadattam mahī-patiḥ
dadau kanyā-śatam rājā su-prītena antara-ātmanā
21. mahā-tejāḥ mahī-patiḥ rājā tam brahmadattam
āhūya su-prītena antara-ātmanā kanyā-śatam dadau
21. The mighty king, having summoned Brahmadatta, gave him the hundred daughters with a supremely pleased heart (antarātman).
यथाक्रमं ततः पाणिं जग्राह रघुनन्दन ।
ब्रह्मदत्तो मही पालस्तासां देवपतिर्यथा ॥२२॥
22. yathākramaṃ tataḥ pāṇiṃ jagrāha raghunandana ,
brahmadatto mahī pālastāsāṃ devapatiryathā.
22. yathā-kramam tataḥ pāṇim jagrāha raghunandana
brahmadattaḥ mahī-pālaḥ tāsām deva-patiḥ yathā
22. raghunandana tataḥ brahmadattaḥ mahī-pālaḥ yathā
deva-patiḥ yathā-kramam tāsām pāṇim jagrāha
22. Then, O scion of Raghu, Brahmadatta, like the lord of the gods, sequentially took the hand of each of those daughters.
स्पृष्टमात्रे ततः पाणौ विकुब्जा विगतज्वराः ।
युक्ताः परमया लक्ष्म्या बभुः कन्याशतं तदा ॥२३॥
23. spṛṣṭamātre tataḥ pāṇau vikubjā vigatajvarāḥ ,
yuktāḥ paramayā lakṣmyā babhuḥ kanyāśataṃ tadā.
23. spṛṣṭa-mātre tataḥ pāṇau vi-kubjāḥ vigata-jvarāḥ
yuktāḥ paramayā lakṣmyā babhuḥ kanyā-śatam tadā
23. tataḥ pāṇau spṛṣṭa-mātre tadā kanyā-śatam vi-kubjāḥ
vigata-jvarāḥ paramayā lakṣmyā yuktāḥ babhuḥ
23. Then, as soon as their hands were touched, the hundred daughters, freed from their humps and all distress, shone, endowed with supreme beauty.
स दृष्ट्वा वायुना मुक्ताः कुशनाभो महीपतिः ।
बभूव परमप्रीतो हर्षं लेभे पुनः पुनः ॥२४॥
24. sa dṛṣṭvā vāyunā muktāḥ kuśanābho mahīpatiḥ ,
babhūva paramaprīto harṣaṃ lebhe punaḥ punaḥ.
24. saḥ dṛṣṭvā vāyunā muktāḥ kuśanābhaḥ mahīpatiḥ
babhūva paramaprītaḥ harṣam lebhe punaḥ punaḥ

24. When King Kuśanābha saw them released by Vāyu, he became exceedingly pleased and felt joy repeatedly.
कृतोद्वाहं तु राजानं ब्रह्मदत्तं महीपतिः ।
सदारं प्रेषयामास सोपाध्याय गणं तदा ॥२५॥
25. kṛtodvāhaṃ tu rājānaṃ brahmadattaṃ mahīpatiḥ ,
sadāraṃ preṣayāmāsa sopādhyāya gaṇaṃ tadā.
25. kṛtodvāham tu rājānam brahmadattam mahīpatiḥ
sadāram preṣayāmāsa sopādhyāya gaṇam tadā
25. mahīpatiḥ tadā tu kṛtodvāham rājānam brahmadattam
sadāram sopādhyāya gaṇam preṣayāmāsa
25. The king (Kuśanābha) then sent forth King Brahmadatta, who had just completed his marriage, accompanied by his wife and a retinue of preceptors.
सोमदापि सुसंहृष्टा पुत्रस्य सदृशीं क्रियाम् ।
यथान्यायं च गन्धर्वी स्नुषास्ताः प्रत्यनन्दत ॥२६॥
26. somadāpi susaṃhṛṣṭā putrasya sadṛśīṃ kriyām ,
yathānyāyaṃ ca gandharvī snuṣāstāḥ pratyanandata.
26. somadā api susaṃhṛṣṭā putrasya sadṛśīm kriyām
yathānyāyam ca gandharvī snuṣāḥ tāḥ pratyanandata
26. ca gandharvī somadā api susaṃhṛṣṭā putrasya

26. And Somadā, the Gandharva woman, being greatly delighted, properly welcomed her daughters-in-law with an appropriate ceremony, befitting her son.
