तं जाग्रतमदम्भेन भ्रातुरर्थाय लक्ष्मणम् ।
गुहः संतापसंतप्तो राघवं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. taṃ jāgratamadambhena bhrāturarthāya lakṣmaṇam ,
guhaḥ saṃtāpasaṃtapto rāghavaṃ vākyamabravīt.

1. Guha, deeply afflicted by sorrow, addressed words concerning Rama to Lakṣmaṇa, who was awake and sincerely dedicated to his brother's cause.
इयं तात सुखा शय्या त्वदर्थमुपकल्पिता ।
प्रत्याश्वसिहि साध्वस्यां राजपुत्र यथासुखम् ॥२॥
2. iyaṃ tāta sukhā śayyā tvadarthamupakalpitā ,
pratyāśvasihi sādhvasyāṃ rājaputra yathāsukham.
2. iyam tāta sukhā śayyā tvadartham upakalpitā
prati āśvasihi sādhu asyām rājaputra yathāsukham
2. tāta rājaputra iyam sukhā śayyā tvadartham
upakalpitā asyām sādhu yathāsukham prati āśvasihi
2. My dear prince, this comfortable bed has been prepared for you. Please rest well on it, at ease.
उचितो ऽयं जनः सर्वः क्लेशानां त्वं सुखोचितः ।
गुप्त्यर्थं जागरिष्यामः काकुत्स्थस्य वयं निशाम् ॥३॥
3. ucito'yaṃ janaḥ sarvaḥ kleśānāṃ tvaṃ sukhocitaḥ ,
guptyarthaṃ jāgariṣyāmaḥ kākutsthasya vayaṃ niśām.
3. ucitaḥ ayam janaḥ sarvaḥ kleśānām tvam sukha-ucitaḥ
gupti-artham jāgariṣyāmaḥ kākutsthasya vayam niśām
3. ayam sarvaḥ janaḥ kleśānām ucitaḥ tvam sukha-ucitaḥ
(asi) vayam kākutsthasya gupti-artham niśām jāgariṣyāmaḥ
3. This entire populace is accustomed to hardships, while you are accustomed to comfort. Therefore, we shall keep watch throughout the night for the protection of Kakutstha (Rama).
न हि रामात् प्रियतरो ममास्ति भुवि कश्चन ।
ब्रवीम्येतदहं सत्यं सत्येनैव च ते शपे ॥४॥
4. na hi rāmāt priyataro mamāsti bhuvi kaścana ,
bravīmyetadahaṃ satyaṃ satyenaiva ca te śape.
4. na hi rāmāt priyataraḥ mama asti bhuvi kaścana
bravīmi etat aham satyam satyena eva ca te śape
4. hi bhuvi rāmāt priyataraḥ kaścana (anyaḥ) mama na asti .
aham etat satyam bravīmi ca satyena eva te śape
4. Indeed, no one on earth is dearer to me than Rama. I speak this truth, and I swear to you by truth itself.
अस्य प्रसादादाशंसे लोके ऽस्मिन् सुमहद् यशः ।
धर्मावाप्तिं च विपुलामर्थावाप्तिं च केवलाम् ॥५॥
5. asya prasādādāśaṃse loke'smin sumahad yaśaḥ ,
dharmāvāptiṃ ca vipulāmarthāvāptiṃ ca kevalām.
5. asya prasādāt āśaṃse loke asmin sumahat yaśaḥ
dharma-avāptim ca vipulām artha-avāptim ca kevalām
5. asya prasādāt asmin loke sumahat yaśaḥ ca vipulām
dharma-avāptim ca kevalām artha-avāptim āśaṃse
5. By his grace, I hope for great fame in this world, along with the vast attainment of natural law (dharma) and complete attainment of wealth.
सो ऽहं प्रियसखं रामं शयानं सह सीतया ।
रक्षिष्यामि धनुष्पाणिः सर्वतो ज्ञातिभिः सह ॥६॥
6. so'haṃ priyasakhaṃ rāmaṃ śayānaṃ saha sītayā ,
rakṣiṣyāmi dhanuṣpāṇiḥ sarvato jñātibhiḥ saha.
6. saḥ aham priya-sakham rāmam śayānam saha sītayā
rakṣiṣyāmi dhanuṣ-pāṇiḥ sarvataḥ jñātibhiḥ saha
6. saḥ aham dhanuṣ-pāṇiḥ jñātibhiḥ saha sītayā saha
śayānam priya-sakham rāmam sarvataḥ rakṣiṣyāmi
6. I, with bow in hand, will protect my dear friend Rama, who is lying down with Sita, from all sides, along with my kinsmen.
न हि मे ऽविदितं किं चिद्वने ऽस्मिंश्चरतः सदा ।
चतुरङ्गं ह्यपि बलं सुमहत् प्रसहेमहि ॥७॥
7. na hi me'viditaṃ kiṃ cidvane'smiṃścarataḥ sadā ,
caturaṅgaṃ hyapi balaṃ sumahat prasahemahi.
7. na hi me aviditam kim cit vane asmin carataḥ
sadā caturangam hi api balam sumahat prasahemahi
7. hi sadā asmin vane carataḥ me kim cit aviditam na
api sumahat caturangam balam vayam prasahemahi
7. Indeed, as I constantly roam in this forest, nothing remains unknown to me. We could certainly overcome even a very great four-limbed army (caturanga bala).
लक्ष्मणस्तं तदोवाच रक्ष्यमाणास्त्वयानघ ।
नात्र भीता वयं सर्वे धर्ममेवानुपश्यता ॥८॥
8. lakṣmaṇastaṃ tadovāca rakṣyamāṇāstvayānagha ,
nātra bhītā vayaṃ sarve dharmamevānupaśyatā.
8. lakṣmaṇaḥ tam tadā uvāca rakṣyamāṇāḥ tvayā anagha
na atra bhītāḥ vayam sarve dharmam eva anupaśyatā
8. lakṣmaṇaḥ tadā tam uvāca anagha tvayā rakṣyamāṇāḥ sarve
vayam atra bhītāḥ na dharmam eva anupaśyatā (tvayi sati)
8. Lakshmana then said to him, "O sinless one (anagha), protected by you, we are all not afraid here, as you observe the natural law (dharma)."
कथं दाशरथौ भूमौ शयाने सह सीतया ।
शक्या निद्रा मया लब्धुं जीवितं वा सुखानि वा ॥९॥
9. kathaṃ dāśarathau bhūmau śayāne saha sītayā ,
śakyā nidrā mayā labdhuṃ jīvitaṃ vā sukhāni vā.
9. katham dāśarathau bhūmau śayāne saha sītayā
śakyā nidrā mayā labdhum jīvitam vā sukhāni vā
9. katham sītayā saha bhūmau śayāne dāśarathau (sati) mayā
nidrā vā jīvitam vā sukhāni labdhum śakyā (bhavati)?
9. How can sleep be obtained by me, or even life or pleasures, while the son of Dasharatha (Rama) lies on the ground with Sita?
यो न देवासुरैः सर्वैः शक्यः प्रसहितुं युधि ।
तं पश्य सुखसंविष्टं तृणेषु सह सीतया ॥१०॥
10. yo na devāsuraiḥ sarvaiḥ śakyaḥ prasahituṃ yudhi ,
taṃ paśya sukhasaṃviṣṭaṃ tṛṇeṣu saha sītayā.
10. yaḥ na devāsuraiḥ sarvaiḥ śakyaḥ prasahitum
yudhi tam paśya sukhasamviṣṭam tṛṇeṣu saha sītayā
10. yaḥ sarvaiḥ devāsuraiḥ yudhi prasahitum na śakyaḥ
tam sītayā saha tṛṇeṣu sukhasamviṣṭam paśya
10. Behold him, who cannot be overcome in battle by all the gods and asuras (demons), lying comfortably on the grass with Sita.
यो मन्त्र तपसा लब्धो विविधैश्च परिश्रमैः ।
एको दशरथस्यैष पुत्रः सदृशलक्षणः ॥११॥
11. yo mantra tapasā labdho vividhaiśca pariśramaiḥ ,
eko daśarathasyaiṣa putraḥ sadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ.
11. yaḥ mantra tapasā labdhaḥ vividhaiḥ ca pariśramaiḥ
ekaḥ daśarathasya eṣaḥ putraḥ sadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ
11. yaḥ eṣaḥ ekaḥ putraḥ daśarathasya mantra tapasā
ca vividhaiḥ pariśramaiḥ labdhaḥ sadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ
11. This one son of Dasharatha, who was obtained through sacred incantations (mantra), ascetic practice (tapas), and various arduous efforts, possesses auspicious characteristics.
अस्मिन्प्रव्रजितो राजा न चिरं वर्तयिष्यति ।
विधवा मेदिनी नूनं क्षिप्रमेव भविष्यति ॥१२॥
12. asminpravrajito rājā na ciraṃ vartayiṣyati ,
vidhavā medinī nūnaṃ kṣiprameva bhaviṣyati.
12. asmin pravrajitaḥ rājā na ciram vartayiṣyati
vidhavā medinī nūnam kṣipram eva bhaviṣyati
12. asmin pravrajitaḥ [sati] rājā na ciram vartayiṣyati
nūnam medinī kṣipram eva vidhavā bhaviṣyati
12. Once he (Rama) has gone into exile, the king will not live for long. Indeed, the earth will very soon become widowed.
विनद्य सुमहानादं श्रमेणोपरताः स्त्रियः ।
निर्घोषोपरतं तात मन्ये राजनिवेशनम् ॥१३॥
13. vinadya sumahānādaṃ śrameṇoparatāḥ striyaḥ ,
nirghoṣoparataṃ tāta manye rājaniveśanam.
13. vinadya su-mahānādam śrameṇa uparatāḥ striyaḥ
nirghoṣa uparatam tāta manye rāja-niveśanam
13. vinadya su-mahānādam striyaḥ śrameṇa uparatāḥ [santi]
tāta manye rāja-niveśanam nirghoṣa uparatam [asti]
13. After emitting a very loud cry, the women ceased their wailing due to exhaustion. O dear father, I believe the king's residence is now silent, its clamor having ceased.
कौसल्या चैव राजा च तथैव जननी मम ।
नाशंसे यदि जीवन्ति सर्वे ते शर्वरीमिमाम् ॥१४॥
14. kausalyā caiva rājā ca tathaiva jananī mama ,
nāśaṃse yadi jīvanti sarve te śarvarīmimām.
14. kausalyā ca eva rājā ca tathā eva jananī mama
na āśaṃse yadi jīvanti sarve te śarvarīm imām
14. kausalyā ca rājā ca tathā eva mama jananī ca [iti]
te sarve imām śarvarīm jīvanti yadi [iti] na āśaṃse
14. Kaushalya, the King, and my mother (jananī) likewise - I do not hope that all of them will survive this night.
जीवेदपि हि मे माता शत्रुघ्नस्यान्ववेक्षया ।
तद्दुःखं यत्तु कौसल्या वीरसूर्विनशिष्यति ॥१५॥
15. jīvedapi hi me mātā śatrughnasyānvavekṣayā ,
tadduḥkhaṃ yattu kausalyā vīrasūrvinaśiṣyati.
15. jīvet api hi me mātā śatrughnasya anvavekṣayā
tat duḥkham yat tu kausalyā vīrasūḥ vinaśiṣyati
15. me mātā hi api śatrughnasya anvavekṣayā jīvet
tu yat kausalyā vīrasūḥ vinaśiṣyati tat duḥkham
15. My mother, indeed, might even live for the sake of Shatrughna. But the great sorrow is that Kausalya, who is the mother of a hero, will perish.
अनुरक्तजनाकीर्णा सुखालोकप्रियावहा ।
राजव्यसनसंसृष्टा सा पुरी विनशिष्यति ॥१६॥
16. anuraktajanākīrṇā sukhālokapriyāvahā ,
rājavyasanasaṃsṛṣṭā sā purī vinaśiṣyati.
16. anuraktajanākīrṇā sukhālokapriyāvahā
rājavyasanasaṃsṛṣṭā sā purī vinaśiṣyati
16. anuraktajanākīrṇā sukhālokapriyāvahā
rājavyasanasaṃsṛṣṭā sā purī vinaśiṣyati
16. That city, bustling with devoted people, and providing delightful sights and cherished joys, will perish, afflicted as it is by the king's misfortune.
अतिक्रान्तमतिक्रान्तमनवाप्य मनोरथम् ।
राज्ये राममनिक्षिप्य पिता मे विनशिष्यति ॥१७॥
17. atikrāntamatikrāntamanavāpya manoratham ,
rājye rāmamanikṣipya pitā me vinaśiṣyati.
17. atikrāntam atikrāntam anavāpya manoratham
rājye rāmam anikṣipya pitā me vinaśiṣyati
17. atikrāntam atikrāntam me pitā manoratham
anavāpya rājye rāmam anikṣipya vinaśiṣyati
17. The past is truly past. My father will perish, having failed to achieve his desire and without installing Rama in the kingdom.
सिद्धार्थाः पितरं वृत्तं तस्मिन् काले ह्युपस्थिते ।
प्रेतकार्येषु सर्वेषु संस्करिष्यन्ति भूमिपम् ॥१८॥
18. siddhārthāḥ pitaraṃ vṛttaṃ tasmin kāle hyupasthite ,
pretakāryeṣu sarveṣu saṃskariṣyanti bhūmipam.
18. siddhārthāḥ pitaram vṛttam tasmin kāle hi upasthite
pretakāryeṣu sarveṣu saṃskariṣyanti bhūmipam
18. hi tasmin kāle upasthite siddhārthāḥ sarveṣu
pretakāryeṣu vṛttam pitaram bhūmipam saṃskariṣyanti
18. When that time indeed arrives, they, having achieved their purpose, will perform all the funeral rites (saṃskāra) for the dead father, the king.
रम्यचत्वरसंस्थानां सुविभक्तमहापथाम् ।
हर्म्यप्रासादसंपन्नां गणिकावरशोभिताम् ॥१९॥
19. ramyacatvarasaṃsthānāṃ suvibhaktamahāpathām ,
harmyaprāsādasaṃpannāṃ gaṇikāvaraśobhitām.
19. ramya-catvara-saṃsthānām su-vibhaktamahāpathām
harmya-prāsāda-sampannām gaṇikā-vara-śobhitām
19. ramya-catvara-saṃsthānām su-vibhaktamahāpathām
harmya-prāsāda-sampannām gaṇikā-vara-śobhitām
19. That city which possesses charming squares, well-demarcated main roads, is rich with mansions and palaces, and graced by excellent courtesans.
रथाश्वगजसंबाधां तूर्यनादविनादिताम् ।
सर्वकल्याणसंपूर्णां हृष्टपुष्टजनाकुलाम् ॥२०॥
20. rathāśvagajasaṃbādhāṃ tūryanādavināditām ,
sarvakalyāṇasaṃpūrṇāṃ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākulām.
20. ratha-aśva-gaja-saṃbādhām tūrya-nāda-vināditām
sarva-kalyāṇa-saṃpūrṇām hṛṣṭa-puṣṭa-jana-ākulām
20. ratha-aśva-gaja-saṃbādhām tūrya-nāda-vināditām
sarva-kalyāṇa-saṃpūrṇām hṛṣṭa-puṣṭa-jana-ākulām
20. That city which is thronged with chariots, horses, and elephants, reverberates with the sound of musical instruments, is filled with all kinds of prosperity, and bustling with happy and robust people.
आरामोद्यानसंपन्नां समाजोत्सवशालिनीम् ।
सुखिता विचरिष्यन्ति राजधानीं पितुर्मम ॥२१॥
21. ārāmodyānasaṃpannāṃ samājotsavaśālinīm ,
sukhitā vicariṣyanti rājadhānīṃ piturmama.
21. ārāma-udyāna-sampannām samāja-utsava-śālinīm
sukhitāḥ vicariṣyanti rājadhānīm pituḥ mama
21. sukhitāḥ mama pituḥ rājadhānīm ārāma-udyāna-sampannām
samāja-utsava-śālinīm vicariṣyanti
21. That city which is rich in parks and gardens, and splendid with social gatherings and festivals. Happy people will roam about my father's capital.
अपि सत्यप्रतिज्ञेन सार्धं कुशलिना वयम् ।
निवृत्ते वनवासे ऽस्मिन्नयोध्यां प्रविशेमहि ॥२२॥
22. api satyapratijñena sārdhaṃ kuśalinā vayam ,
nivṛtte vanavāse'sminnayodhyāṃ praviśemahi.
22. api satya-pratijñena sārdham kuśalinā vayam
nivṛtte vana-vāse asmin ayodhyām praviśemahi
22. api asmin vana-vāse nivṛtte,
vayam satya-pratijñena kuśalinā sārdham Ayodhyām praviśemahi
22. May we, along with that righteous (satyapratijñena) and prosperous one, enter Ayodhya when this period of forest exile (vanavāsa) has concluded.
परिदेवयमानस्य दुःखार्तस्य महात्मनः ।
तिष्ठतो राजपुत्रस्य शर्वरी सात्यवर्तत ॥२३॥
23. paridevayamānasya duḥkhārtasya mahātmanaḥ ,
tiṣṭhato rājaputrasya śarvarī sātyavartata.
23. paridevayamānasya duḥkhārtasya mahātmanaḥ
tiṣṭhataḥ rājaputrasya śarvarī sā atyavartata
23. sā śarvarī paridevayamānasya duḥkhārtasya
tiṣṭhataḥ rājaputrasya mahātmanaḥ atyavartata
23. That night passed for the great-souled (mahātman) prince, who stood there lamenting and tormented by sorrow.
तथा हि सत्यं ब्रुवति प्रजाहिते नरेन्द्रपुत्रे गुरुसौहृदाद्गुहः ।
मुमोच बाष्पं व्यसनाभिपीडितो ज्वरातुरो नाग इव व्यथातुरः ॥२४॥
24. tathā hi satyaṃ bruvati prajāhite narendraputre gurusauhṛdādguhaḥ ,
mumoca bāṣpaṃ vyasanābhipīḍito jvarāturo nāga iva vyathāturaḥ.
24. tathā hi satyam bruvati prajāhite
narendraputre gurusauhṛdāt guhaḥ
mumoca bāṣpam vyasanābhipīḍitaḥ
jvarāturaḥ nāgaḥ iva vyathāturaḥ
24. hi tathā narendraputre prajāhite satyam bruvati,
guhaḥ gurusauhṛdāt vyasanābhipīḍitaḥ bāṣpam mumoca,
jvarāturaḥ vyathāturaḥ nāgaḥ iva
24. Indeed, as the prince, dedicated to the welfare of his subjects, spoke the truth, Guha, tormented by misfortune, shed tears because of his deep affection (sauhṛda). He was distressed like an elephant afflicted by fever and pain.
