एवमुक्तस्तु भरतो निषादाधिपतिं गुहम् ।
प्रत्युवाच महाप्राज्ञो वाक्यं हेत्वर्थसंहितम् ॥१॥
1. evamuktastu bharato niṣādādhipatiṃ guham ,

1. Being thus addressed, the greatly wise Bharata replied to Guha, the chief of the Niṣādas, with words full of reasoning and meaning.
ऊर्जितः खलु ते कामः कृतो मम गुरोः सखे ।
यो मे त्वमीदृशीं सेनामेको ऽभ्यर्चितुमिच्छसि ॥२॥
2. ūrjitaḥ khalu te kāmaḥ kṛto mama guroḥ sakhe ,
yo me tvamīdṛśīṃ senāmeko'bhyarcitumicchasi.

2. O friend, your excellent wish, which is for my preceptor (guru), is truly fulfilled, since you alone wish to honor (abhyarcitum) such a large army for me.
इत्युक्त्वा तु महातेजा गुहं वचनमुत्तमम् ।
अब्रवीद्भरतः श्रीमान्निषादाधिपतिं पुनः ॥३॥
3. ityuktvā tu mahātejā guhaṃ vacanamuttamam ,
abravīdbharataḥ śrīmānniṣādādhipatiṃ punaḥ.
3. iti uktvā tu mahātejāḥ guham vacanam uttamam
abravīt bharataḥ śrīmān niṣādādhipatim punaḥ
3. iti uttamam vacanam guham uktvā tu śrīmān

3. Having thus spoken these excellent words to Guha, the glorious (śrīmān) and greatly resplendent (mahātejāḥ) Bharata then spoke again to the chief of the Niṣādas.
कतरेण गमिष्यामि भरद्वाजाश्रमं गुह ।
गहनो ऽयं भृशं देशो गङ्गानूपो दुरत्ययः ॥४॥
4. katareṇa gamiṣyāmi bharadvājāśramaṃ guha ,
gahano'yaṃ bhṛśaṃ deśo gaṅgānūpo duratyayaḥ.

gahanaḥ ayam bhṛśam deśaḥ gaṅgānūpaḥ duratyayaḥ
4. guha bharadvājāśramam katareṇa gamiṣyāmi ayam

4. O Guha, by which path shall I go to the hermitage (āśrama) of Bharadvāja? This region, the marshy land (anūpa) of the Gaṅgā, is exceedingly dense and impassable.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रस्य धीमतः ।
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं गुहो गहनगोचरः ॥५॥
5. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rājaputrasya dhīmataḥ ,
abravīt prāñjalirvākyaṃ guho gahanagocaraḥ.
5. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā rājaputrasya dhīmataḥ
abravīt prāñjaliḥ vākyam guhaḥ gahanagocaraḥ

5. Having heard that speech from the intelligent prince, Guha, who frequented dense forests, spoke with folded hands.
दाशास्त्वनुगमिष्यन्ति धन्विनः सुसमाहिताः ।
अहं चानुगमिष्यामि राजपुत्र महायशः ॥६॥
6. dāśāstvanugamiṣyanti dhanvinaḥ susamāhitāḥ ,
ahaṃ cānugamiṣyāmi rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ.
6. dāśāḥ tu anugamiṣyanti dhanvinaḥ susamāhitāḥ
aham ca anugamiṣyāmi rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ
6. rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ tu susamāhitāḥ dhanvinaḥ
dāśāḥ anugamiṣyanti ca aham anugamiṣyāmi
6. Indeed, the well-prepared archers and tribesmen will follow. And I too will follow, O greatly renowned prince.
कच्चिन्न दुष्टो व्रजसि रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
इयं ते महती सेना शङ्कां जनयतीव मे ॥७॥
7. kaccinna duṣṭo vrajasi rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
iyaṃ te mahatī senā śaṅkāṃ janayatīva me.
7. kaccit na duṣṭaḥ vrajasi rāmasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
iyam te mahatī senā śaṅkām janayati iva me
7. kaccit na duṣṭaḥ akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ rāmasya vrajasi
iyam te mahatī senā me śaṅkām iva janayati
7. Are you not proceeding with ill intent towards Rāma, whose actions (karma) are unimpeachable? This large army of yours certainly arouses suspicion in me.
तमेवमभिभाषन्तमाकाश इव निर्मलः ।
भरतः श्लक्ष्णया वाचा गुहं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. tamevamabhibhāṣantamākāśa iva nirmalaḥ ,
bharataḥ ślakṣṇayā vācā guhaṃ vacanamabravīt.
8. tam evam abhibhāṣantam ākāśaḥ iva nirmalaḥ
bharataḥ ślakṣṇayā vācā guham vacanam abravīt
8. ākāśaḥ iva nirmalaḥ bharataḥ ślakṣṇayā vācā
guham tam evam abhibhāṣantam vacanam abravīt
8. To him who was speaking thus, Bharata, whose character was as pure and clear as the sky, spoke these words to Guha with a gentle voice.
मा भूत् स कालो यत् कष्टं न मां शङ्कितुमर्हसि ।
राघवः स हि मे भ्राता ज्येष्ठः पितृसमो मम ॥९॥
9. mā bhūt sa kālo yat kaṣṭaṃ na māṃ śaṅkitumarhasi ,
rāghavaḥ sa hi me bhrātā jyeṣṭhaḥ pitṛsamo mama.
9. mā bhūt saḥ kālaḥ yat kaṣṭam na mām śaṅkitum arhasi
rāghavaḥ saḥ hi me bhrātā jyeṣṭhaḥ pitṛsamaḥ mama
9. mā saḥ kālaḥ bhūt yat kaṣṭam mām śaṅkitum na arhasi
hi saḥ rāghavaḥ me jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā mama pitṛsamaḥ
9. Let such a time never come that you should doubt me in distress. For that Rāghava is indeed my elder brother, and he is like a father to me.
तं निवर्तयितुं यामि काकुत्स्थं वनवासिनम् ।
बुद्धिरन्या न ते कार्या गुह सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥१०॥
10. taṃ nivartayituṃ yāmi kākutsthaṃ vanavāsinam ,
buddhiranyā na te kāryā guha satyaṃ bravīmi te.
10. tam nivartayitum yāmi kākutstham vanavāsinam
buddhiḥ anyā na te kāryā guha satyam bravīmi te
10. aham tam kākutstham vanavāsinam nivartayitum yāmi
guha te satyam bravīmi anyā buddhiḥ te na kāryā
10. I go to bring back that descendant of Kakutstha, the forest-dweller. Guha, I tell you the truth: you should not entertain any other thought (buddhi).
स तु संहृष्टवदनः श्रुत्वा भरतभाषितम् ।
पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वाक्यं भरतं प्रति हर्षितः ॥११॥
11. sa tu saṃhṛṣṭavadanaḥ śrutvā bharatabhāṣitam ,
punarevābravīdvākyaṃ bharataṃ prati harṣitaḥ.
11. saḥ tu saṃhṛṣṭavadanaḥ śrutvā bharatabhāṣitam
punar eva abravīt vākyam bharatam prati harṣitaḥ
11. tu saḥ saṃhṛṣṭavadanaḥ bharatabhāṣitam śrutvā
punar eva harṣitaḥ bharatam prati vākyam abravīt
11. But he, with a face full of joy, having heard Bharata's words, spoke again to Bharata, greatly delighted.
धन्यस्त्वं न त्वया तुल्यं पश्यामि जगतीतले ।
अयत्नादागतं राज्यं यस्त्वं त्यक्तुमिहेच्छसि ॥१२॥
12. dhanyastvaṃ na tvayā tulyaṃ paśyāmi jagatītale ,
ayatnādāgataṃ rājyaṃ yastvaṃ tyaktumihecchasi.
12. dhanyaḥ tvam na tvayā tulyam paśyāmi jagatītale
yaḥ tvam tyaktum iha icchasi ayatnāt āgatam rājyam
12. tvam dhanyaḥ (asi) aham jagatītale tvayā tulyam na
paśyāmi yaḥ tvam ayatnāt āgatam rājyam iha tyaktum icchasi
12. You are blessed! I see no one equal to you on the surface of the earth, as you desire to relinquish a kingdom that came to you effortlessly.
शाश्वती खलु ते कीर्तिर्लोकाननुचरिष्यति ।
यस्त्वं कृच्छ्रगतं रामं प्रत्यानयितुमिच्छसि ॥१३॥
13. śāśvatī khalu te kīrtirlokānanucariṣyati ,
yastvaṃ kṛcchragataṃ rāmaṃ pratyānayitumicchasi.
13. śāśvatī khalu te kīrtiḥ lokān anucariṣyati yaḥ
tvam kṛcchragatam rāmam pratyānayitum icchasi
13. te śāśvatī kīrtiḥ khalu lokān anucariṣyati yaḥ
tvam kṛcchragatam rāmam pratyānayitum icchasi
13. Indeed, your eternal glory will spread throughout the worlds, you who desire to bring back Rama, who has fallen into great difficulty.
एवं संभाषमाणस्य गुहस्य भरतं तदा ।
बभौ नष्टप्रभः सूर्यो रजनी चाभ्यवर्तत ॥१४॥
14. evaṃ saṃbhāṣamāṇasya guhasya bharataṃ tadā ,
babhau naṣṭaprabhaḥ sūryo rajanī cābhyavartata.
14. evam saṃbhāṣamāṇasya guhasya bharatam tadā babhau
naṣṭaprabhaḥ sūryaḥ rajanī ca abhyavartata
14. tadā guhasya bharatam evam saṃbhāṣamāṇasya
naṣṭaprabhaḥ sūryaḥ babhau ca rajanī abhyavartata
14. As Guha was speaking thus to Bharata at that time, the sun lost its brilliance and night set in.
संनिवेश्य स तां सेनां गुहेन परितोषितः ।
शत्रुघ्नेन सह श्रीमाञ् शयनं पुनरागमत् ॥१५॥
15. saṃniveśya sa tāṃ senāṃ guhena paritoṣitaḥ ,
śatrughnena saha śrīmāñ śayanaṃ punarāgamat.
15. saṃniveśya saḥ tām senām guhena paritoṣitaḥ
śatrughnena saha śrīmān śayanam punaḥ āgamat
15. saḥ śrīmān guhena paritoṣitaḥ tām senām
saṃniveśya śatrughnena saha punaḥ śayanam āgamat
15. After setting up that army's encampment, the glorious Bharata, satisfied by Guha, returned to his bed with Shatrughna.
रामचिन्तामयः शोको भरतस्य महात्मनः ।
उपस्थितो ह्यनर्हस्य धर्मप्रेक्षस्य तादृशः ॥१६॥
16. rāmacintāmayaḥ śoko bharatasya mahātmanaḥ ,
upasthito hyanarhasya dharmaprekṣasya tādṛśaḥ.
16. rāmacintāmayaḥ śokaḥ bharatasya mahātmanaḥ
upasthitaḥ hi anarhasya dharmaprekṣasya tādṛśaḥ
16. hi tādṛśaḥ rāmacintāmayaḥ śokaḥ anarhasya
dharmaprekṣasya mahātmanaḥ bharatasya upasthitaḥ
16. Indeed, such profound sorrow (śoka), characterized by thoughts of Rama, afflicted the great-souled (mahātman) Bharata, who was undeserving of it and upheld his natural law (dharma).
अन्तर्दाहेन दहनः संतापयति राघवम् ।
वनदाहाभिसंतप्तं गूढो ऽग्निरिव पादपम् ॥१७॥
17. antardāhena dahanaḥ saṃtāpayati rāghavam ,
vanadāhābhisaṃtaptaṃ gūḍho'gniriva pādapam.
17. antar-dāhena dahanaḥ saṃtāpayati rāghavam
vana-dāhābhisaṃtaptaṃ gūḍhaḥ agniḥ iva pādapam
17. dahanaḥ antar-dāhena rāghavam saṃtāpayati
gūḍhaḥ agniḥ iva vana-dāhābhisaṃtaptaṃ pādapam
17. A burning anguish within torments Rāghava (Rāma), much like a hidden fire afflicts a tree already scorched by a forest fire.
प्रस्रुतः सर्वगात्रेभ्यः स्वेदः शोकाग्निसंभवः ।
यथा सूर्यांशुसंतप्तो हिमवान्प्रस्रुतो हिमम् ॥१८॥
18. prasrutaḥ sarvagātrebhyaḥ svedaḥ śokāgnisaṃbhavaḥ ,
yathā sūryāṃśusaṃtapto himavānprasruto himam.
18. prasrutaḥ sarva-gātrebhyaḥ svedaḥ śoka-agni-saṃbhavaḥ
yathā sūryāṃśu-saṃtaptaḥ himavān prasrutaḥ himam
18. śoka-agni-saṃbhavaḥ svedaḥ sarva-gātrebhyaḥ prasrutaḥ
yathā sūryāṃśu-saṃtaptaḥ himavān himam prasrutaḥ
18. Sweat, born from the fire of grief, exuded from all his limbs, just as the Himalayas (Himavān), heated by the sun's rays, release their ice.
ध्याननिर्दरशैलेन विनिःश्वसितधातुना ।
दैन्यपादपसंघेन शोकायासाधिशृङ्गिणा ॥१९॥
19. dhyānanirdaraśailena viniḥśvasitadhātunā ,
dainyapādapasaṃghena śokāyāsādhiśṛṅgiṇā.
19. dhyāna-nirdara-śailena viniḥśvasita-dhātunā
dainya-pādapa-saṅghena śoka-āyāsa-adhiśṛṅgiṇā
19. dhyāna-nirdara-śailena viniḥśvasita-dhātunā
dainya-pādapa-saṅghena śoka-āyāsa-adhiśṛṅgiṇā
19. (He was overcome) by the mountain whose valleys are deep contemplation (dhyāna), whose minerals are sighs, whose groves of trees are misery, (and) whose peaks are laden with the weariness of grief.
प्रमोहानन्तसत्त्वेन संतापौषधिवेणुना ।
आक्रान्तो दुःखशैलेन महता कैकयीसुतः ॥२०॥
20. pramohānantasattvena saṃtāpauṣadhiveṇunā ,
ākrānto duḥkhaśailena mahatā kaikayīsutaḥ.
20. pramoha-ananta-sattvena saṃtāpa-auṣadhi-veṇunā
ākrāntaḥ duḥkha-śailena mahatā kaikeyī-sutaḥ
20. kaikeyī-sutaḥ mahatā dhyāna-nirdara-śailena
viniḥśvasita-dhātunā dainya-pādapa-saṅghena
śoka-āyāsa-adhiśṛṅgiṇā pramoha-ananta-sattvena
saṃtāpa-auṣadhi-veṇunā duḥkha-śailena ākrāntaḥ
20. The son of Kaikeyī (Rāma) was overcome by a great mountain of sorrow, whose countless inhabitants are delusion, and whose bamboo reeds serve as remedies for torment.
गुहेन सार्धं भरतः समागतो महानुभावः सजनः समाहितः ।
सुदुर्मनास्तं भरतं तदा पुनर्गुहः समाश्वासयदग्रजं प्रति ॥२१॥
21. guhena sārdhaṃ bharataḥ samāgato mahānubhāvaḥ sajanaḥ samāhitaḥ ,
sudurmanāstaṃ bharataṃ tadā punarguhaḥ samāśvāsayadagrajaṃ prati.
21. guhena sārdham bharataḥ samāgataḥ
mahānubhāvaḥ sajanaḥ samāhitaḥ
sudurmanāḥ tam bharatam tadā punaḥ
guhaḥ samāśvāsayat agrajam prati
21. bharataḥ mahānubhāvaḥ sajanaḥ guhena sārdham samāgataḥ samāhitaḥ.
tadā sudurmanāḥ guhaḥ tam bharatam agrajam prati punaḥ samāśvāsayat.
21. Bharata, the greatly esteemed (mahānubhāva) one, arrived composed with his people, accompanied by Guha. Guha, deeply distressed, then consoled Bharata concerning his elder brother.
