एवं संचिन्त्य विप्रेन्द्रो जगाम लघुविक्रमः ।
आख्यातुं तद् यथावृत्तं यमस्य सदनं प्रति ॥१॥
1. evaṃ saṃcintya viprendro jagāma laghuvikramaḥ ,

1. Having thus deliberated, the chief of brahmins (Nārada), moving swiftly, went towards the abode of Yama to narrate what had transpired.
अपश्यत् स यमं तत्र देवमग्निपुरस्कृतम् ।
विधानमुपतिष्ठन्तं प्राणिनो यस्य यादृशम् ॥२॥
2. apaśyat sa yamaṃ tatra devamagnipuraskṛtam ,
vidhānamupatiṣṭhantaṃ prāṇino yasya yādṛśam.
2. apaśyat sa yamam tatra devam agnipuraskṛtam |
vidhānam upatiṣṭhantam prāṇinaḥ yasya yādṛśam

2. He saw Yama there, the deity revered with Vedic fire rituals, who was overseeing the specific constitution (vidhāna) or destiny of each living being.
स तु दृष्ट्वा यमः प्राप्तं महर्षिं तत्र नारदम् ।
अब्रवीत् सुखमासीनमर्घ्यमावेद्य धर्मतः ॥३॥
3. sa tu dṛṣṭvā yamaḥ prāptaṃ maharṣiṃ tatra nāradam ,
abravīt sukhamāsīnamarghyamāvedya dharmataḥ.

3. Indeed, Yama, having seen the great sage Nārada arrive there, spoke after properly offering him a respectful reception (arghyam) in accordance with custom (dharma), as Nārada was comfortably seated.
कच्चित् क्षेमं नु देवर्षे कच्चिद्धर्मो न नश्यति ।
किमागमनकृत्यं ते देवगन्धर्वसेवित ॥४॥
4. kaccit kṣemaṃ nu devarṣe kacciddharmo na naśyati ,
kimāgamanakṛtyaṃ te devagandharvasevita.
4. kaccit kṣemam nu devarṣe kaccit dharmaḥ na
naśyati kim āgamanakṛtyam te devagandharvasevita
4. O divine sage (devarṣe), honored by gods and gandharvas, I hope you are well. I hope that your natural law (dharma) is not diminishing. What is the purpose of your arrival?
अब्रवीत्तु तदा वाक्यं नारदो भगवानृषिः ।
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि विधानं च विधीयताम् ॥५॥
5. abravīttu tadā vākyaṃ nārado bhagavānṛṣiḥ ,
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi vidhānaṃ ca vidhīyatām.

5. Then the divine (bhagavān) sage (ṛṣi) Narada spoke this statement: 'Listen, I will explain, and let the instruction be carried out.'
एष नाम्ना दशग्रीवः पितृराज निशाचरः ।
उपयाति वशं नेतुं विक्रमैस्त्वां सुदुर्जयम् ॥६॥
6. eṣa nāmnā daśagrīvaḥ pitṛrāja niśācaraḥ ,
upayāti vaśaṃ netuṃ vikramaistvāṃ sudurjayam.
6. eṣaḥ nāmnā daśagrīvaḥ pitṛrāja niśācaraḥ
upayāti vaśam netum vikramaiḥ tvām sudurjayam
6. This one, named Dashagriva, a powerful demon (niśācara), is approaching to bring you, who are exceedingly difficult to defeat, under his control by his acts of valor.
एतेन कारणेनाहं त्वरितो ऽस्म्यागतः प्रभो ।
दण्डप्रहरणस्याद्य तव किं नु करिष्यति ॥७॥
7. etena kāraṇenāhaṃ tvarito'smyāgataḥ prabho ,
daṇḍapraharaṇasyādya tava kiṃ nu kariṣyati.
7. etena kāraṇena aham tvaritaḥ asmi āgataḥ prabho
daṇḍapraharaṇasya adya tava kim nu kariṣyati
7. O lord, it is for this reason that I have quickly arrived. What, indeed, will your wielding of a weapon (daṇḍapraharaṇa) achieve today?
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे दूरादंशुमन्तमिवोदितम् ।
ददृशे दिव्यमायान्तं विमानं तस्य रक्षसः ॥८॥
8. etasminnantare dūrādaṃśumantamivoditam ,
dadṛśe divyamāyāntaṃ vimānaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ.
8. etasmin antare dūrāt aṃśumantam iva uditam
dadṛśe divyam āyāntam vimānam tasya rakṣasaḥ
8. Meanwhile, from a distance, the divine aerial chariot (vimāna) belonging to that demon (rakṣas) was seen approaching, as if a radiant sun had just risen.
तं देशं प्रभया तस्य पुष्पकस्य महाबलः ।
कृत्वा वितिमिरं सर्वं समीपं समवर्तत ॥९॥
9. taṃ deśaṃ prabhayā tasya puṣpakasya mahābalaḥ ,
kṛtvā vitimiraṃ sarvaṃ samīpaṃ samavartata.
9. tam deśam prabhayā tasya puṣpakasya mahābalaḥ
kṛtvā vitimiram sarvam samīpam samavartata
9. The greatly powerful one, Ravana, by the splendor of that Puṣpaka (chariot), made that entire region free from darkness and then approached its vicinity.
स त्वपश्यन्महाबाहुर्दशग्रीवस्ततस्ततः ।
प्राणिनः सुकृतं कर्म भुञ्जानांश्चैव दुष्कृतम् ॥१०॥
10. sa tvapaśyanmahābāhurdaśagrīvastatastataḥ ,
prāṇinaḥ sukṛtaṃ karma bhuñjānāṃścaiva duṣkṛtam.
10. saḥ tu apaśyat mahābāhuḥ daśagrīvaḥ tatas tataḥ
prāṇinaḥ sukṛtam karma bhuñjānān ca eva duṣkṛtam
10. Indeed, the mighty-armed, Ten-necked Ravana saw living beings everywhere experiencing the fruits of both good (karma) and bad (karma).
ततस्तान् वध्यमानांस्तु कर्मभिर्दुष्कृतैः स्वकैः ।
रावणो मोचयामास विक्रमेण बलाद्बली ॥११॥
11. tatastān vadhyamānāṃstu karmabhirduṣkṛtaiḥ svakaiḥ ,
rāvaṇo mocayāmāsa vikrameṇa balādbalī.
11. tataḥ tān vadhyamānān tu karmabhiḥ duṣkṛtaiḥ
svakaiḥ rāvaṇaḥ mocayāmāsa vikrameṇa balāt balī
11. Then, the powerful Ravana, by his valor and forcibly, liberated those living beings who were being tormented by their own evil (karma).
प्रेतेषु मुच्यमानेषु राक्षसेन बलीयसा ।
प्रेतगोपाः सुसंरब्धा राक्षसेन्द्रमभिद्रवन् ॥१२॥
12. preteṣu mucyamāneṣu rākṣasena balīyasā ,
pretagopāḥ susaṃrabdhā rākṣasendramabhidravan.

pretagopāḥ susaṃrabdhāḥ rākṣasendram abhidravan

12. As the powerful demon was releasing the dead, the guardians of the departed, greatly enraged, rushed towards the king of demons.
ते प्रासैः परिघैः शूलैर्मुद्गरैः शक्तितोमरैः ।
पुष्पकं समवर्षन्त शूराः शतसहस्रशः ॥१३॥
13. te prāsaiḥ parighaiḥ śūlairmudgaraiḥ śaktitomaraiḥ ,
puṣpakaṃ samavarṣanta śūrāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ.
13. te prāsaiḥ parighaiḥ śūlaiḥ mudgaraiḥ śaktitomaraiḥ
puṣpakam samavarṣanta śūrāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
13. te śūrāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ puṣpakam prāsaiḥ parighaiḥ
śūlaiḥ mudgaraiḥ śaktitomaraiḥ samavarṣanta
13. Those heroes, by the hundreds of thousands, showered the Puṣpaka chariot with spears, iron bars, lances, hammers, and javelins.
तस्यासनानि प्रासादान् वेदिकास्तरणानि च ।
पुष्पकस्य बभञ्जुस्ते शीघ्रं मधुकरा इव ॥१४॥
14. tasyāsanāni prāsādān vedikāstaraṇāni ca ,
puṣpakasya babhañjuste śīghraṃ madhukarā iva.
14. tasya āsanāni prāsādān vedikāstaraṇāni ca
puṣpakasya babhañjuḥ te śīghram madhukarāḥ iva
14. te madhukarāḥ iva śīghram puṣpakasya tasya
āsanāni prāsādān vedikāstaraṇāni ca babhañjuḥ
14. Like bees, they quickly shattered the seats, palaces, and decked platforms of that Puṣpaka chariot.
देवनिष्ठानभूतं तद्विमानं पुष्पकं मृधे ।
भज्यमानं तथैवासीदक्षयं ब्रह्मतेजसा ॥१५॥
15. devaniṣṭhānabhūtaṃ tadvimānaṃ puṣpakaṃ mṛdhe ,
bhajyamānaṃ tathaivāsīdakṣayaṃ brahmatejasā.
15. devaniṣṭhānambhūtam tat vimānam puṣpakam mṛdhe
bhajyamānam tathā eva āsīt akṣayam brahmatejasā
15. tat puṣpakam vimānam devaniṣṭhānambhūtam mṛdhe
bhajyamānam tathā eva āsīt akṣayam brahmatejasā
15. That Puṣpaka aerial chariot, which was a divine abode, though being shattered in battle, nevertheless remained imperishable due to the power of the absolute (brahman).
ततस्ते रावणामात्या यथाकामं यथाबलम् ।
अयुध्यन्त महावीर्याः स च राजा दशाननः ॥१६॥
16. tataste rāvaṇāmātyā yathākāmaṃ yathābalam ,
ayudhyanta mahāvīryāḥ sa ca rājā daśānanaḥ.
16. tataḥ te rāvaṇāmātyāḥ yathākāmam yathābalam
ayudhyanta mahāvīryāḥ saḥ ca rājā daśānanaḥ
16. Then, those exceedingly mighty ministers of Rāvaṇa, along with King Daśānana himself, fought with all their might and to their heart's content.
ते तु शोणितदिग्धाङ्गाः सर्वशस्त्रसमाहताः ।
अमात्या राक्षसेन्द्रस्य चक्रुरायोधनं महत् ॥१७॥
17. te tu śoṇitadigdhāṅgāḥ sarvaśastrasamāhatāḥ ,
amātyā rākṣasendrasya cakrurāyodhanaṃ mahat.
17. te tu śoṇitadigdhāṅgāḥ sarvaśastrasamāhatāḥ
amātyāḥ rākṣasendrasya cakruḥ āyodhanam mahat
17. Those ministers of the king of rākṣasas, whose bodies were smeared with blood and who had been struck by all kinds of weapons, indeed waged a mighty battle.
अन्योन्यं च महाभागा जघ्नुः प्रहरणैर्युधि ।
यमस्य च महत् सैन्यं राक्षसस्य च मन्त्रिणः ॥१८॥
18. anyonyaṃ ca mahābhāgā jaghnuḥ praharaṇairyudhi ,
yamasya ca mahat sainyaṃ rākṣasasya ca mantriṇaḥ.
18. anyonyam ca mahābhāgāḥ jaghnuḥ praharaṇaiḥ yudhi
yamasya ca mahat sainyam rākṣasasya ca mantriṇaḥ
18. And those noble ones (ministers) struck each other with weapons in battle. It was as if a great army of Yama and the rākṣasa's ministers (were engaged in mutual destruction).
अमात्यांस्तांस्तु संत्यज्य राक्षसस्य महौजसः ।
तमेव समधावन्त शूलवर्षैर्दशाननम् ॥१९॥
19. amātyāṃstāṃstu saṃtyajya rākṣasasya mahaujasaḥ ,
tameva samadhāvanta śūlavarṣairdaśānanam.
19. amātyān tān tu saṃtyajya rākṣasasya mahaujasaḥ
tam eva samadhāvanta śūlavarṣaiḥ daśānanam
19. But, abandoning those ministers of the immensely powerful rākṣasa (Rāvaṇa), they (the opposing forces) rushed directly towards Daśānana himself, showering him with spears.
ततः शोणितदिग्धाङ्गः प्रहारैर्जर्जरीकृतः ।
विमाने राक्षसश्रेष्ठः फुल्लाशोक इवाबभौ ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ śoṇitadigdhāṅgaḥ prahārairjarjarīkṛtaḥ ,
vimāne rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ phullāśoka ivābabhau.
20. tataḥ śoṇitadigdhāṅgaḥ prahāraiḥ jarjarīkṛtaḥ
vimāne rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ phullāśokaḥ iva ābabhau
20. tataḥ rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ śoṇitadigdhāṅgaḥ prahāraiḥ
jarjarīkṛtaḥ vimāne phullāśokaḥ iva ābabhau
20. Then, the chief of the demons, his body smeared with blood and mangled by the blows, appeared in his aerial chariot like a blossoming Ashoka tree.
स शूलानि गदाः प्रासाञ् शक्तितोमरसायकान् ।
मुसलानि शिलावृक्षान्मुमोचास्त्रबलाद्बली ॥२१॥
21. sa śūlāni gadāḥ prāsāñ śaktitomarasāyakān ,
musalāni śilāvṛkṣānmumocāstrabalādbalī.
21. sa śūlāni gadāḥ prāsān śaktitomarasāyakān
musalāni śilāvṛkṣān mumoca astrabalāt balī
21. sa balī astrabalāt śūlāni gadāḥ prāsān
śaktitomarasāyakān musalāni śilāvṛkṣān mumoca
21. The mighty one hurled spears, maces, javelins, lances, iron clubs, arrows, pestles, rocks, and trees with the strength of his weapons (astra).
तांस्तु सर्वान् समाक्षिप्य तदस्त्रमपहत्य च ।
जघ्नुस्ते राक्षसं घोरमेकं शतसहस्रकः ॥२२॥
22. tāṃstu sarvān samākṣipya tadastramapahatya ca ,
jaghnuste rākṣasaṃ ghoramekaṃ śatasahasrakaḥ.
22. tān tu sarvān samākṣipya tat astram apahatya ca
jaghnuḥ te rākṣasam ghoram ekam śatasahasrakaḥ
22. tu te śatasahasrakaḥ tān sarvān samākṣipya ca
tat astram apahatya ekam ghoram rākṣasam jaghnuḥ
22. But having completely warded off all those (weapons) and destroyed that missile, they - a hundred thousand (strong) - struck that one terrible demon.
परिवार्य च तं सर्वे शैलं मेघोत्करा इव ।
भिन्दिपालैश्च शूलैश्च निरुच्छ्वासमकारयन् ॥२३॥
23. parivārya ca taṃ sarve śailaṃ meghotkarā iva ,
bhindipālaiśca śūlaiśca nirucchvāsamakārayan.
23. parivārya ca tam sarve śailam meghotkarāḥ iva
bhindipālaiḥ ca śūlaiḥ ca nirucchvāsam akārayan
23. ca sarve tam śailam meghotkarāḥ iva parivārya
ca bhindipālaiḥ ca śūlaiḥ nirucchvāsam akārayan
23. And all of them, having surrounded him like masses of clouds encircle a mountain, made him breathless with spears and bhindipālas (javelins).
विमुक्तकवचः क्रुद्धो सिक्तः शोणितविस्रवैः ।
स पुष्पकं परित्यज्य पृथिव्यामवतिष्ठत ॥२४॥
24. vimuktakavacaḥ kruddho siktaḥ śoṇitavisravaiḥ ,
sa puṣpakaṃ parityajya pṛthivyāmavatiṣṭhata.
24. vimuktakavacaḥ kruddhaḥ siktaḥ śoṇitavisravaiḥ
sa puṣpakaṃ parityajya pṛthivyām avatiṣṭhata
24. sa vimuktakavacaḥ kruddhaḥ śoṇitavisravaiḥ
siktaḥ puṣpakaṃ parityajya pṛthivyām avatiṣṭhata
24. He, his armor removed, enraged, drenched with streams of blood, abandoned the Puṣpaka aircraft and stood upon the earth.
ततः स कार्मुकी बाणी पृथिव्यां राक्षसाधिपः ।
लब्धसंज्ञो मुहूर्तेन क्रुद्धस्तस्थौ यथान्तकः ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ sa kārmukī bāṇī pṛthivyāṃ rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
labdhasaṃjño muhūrtena kruddhastasthau yathāntakaḥ.
25. tataḥ sa kārmukī bāṇī pṛthivyām rākṣasādhipaḥ
labdhasaṃjñaḥ muhūrtena kruddhaḥ tasthau yathā antakaḥ
25. tataḥ kārmukī bāṇī pṛthivyām sa rākṣasādhipaḥ
muhūrtena labdhasaṃjñaḥ kruddhaḥ antakaḥ yathā tasthau
25. Then, that lord of rākṣasas (rākṣasādhipa), holding a bow and arrows, regained consciousness in a moment while on the earth, and stood enraged like Antaka (Yama, the god of death).
ततः पाशुपतं दिव्यमस्त्रं संधाय कार्मुके ।
तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति तानुक्त्वा तच्चापं व्यपकर्षत ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ pāśupataṃ divyamastraṃ saṃdhāya kārmuke ,
tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti tānuktvā taccāpaṃ vyapakarṣata.
26. tataḥ pāśupataṃ divyam astraṃ saṃdhāya kārmuke
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti tān uktvā tat cāpam vyapakarṣata
26. tataḥ kārmuke divyam pāśupataṃ astraṃ saṃdhāya
tān tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti uktvā tat cāpam vyapakarṣata
26. Then, stringing the divine Pāśupata missile onto his bow, and saying to them, "Stop! Stop!", he drew that bow.
ज्वालामाली स तु शरः क्रव्यादानुगतो रणे ।
मुक्तो गुल्मान्द्रुमांश्चैव भस्मकृत्वा प्रधावति ॥२७॥
27. jvālāmālī sa tu śaraḥ kravyādānugato raṇe ,
mukto gulmāndrumāṃścaiva bhasmakṛtvā pradhāvati.
27. jvālāmālī sa tu śaraḥ kravyādānugataḥ raṇe muktaḥ
gulmān drumān ca eva bhasmakṛtvā pradhāvati
27. raṇe jvālāmālī sa tu śaraḥ kravyādānugataḥ muktaḥ
gulmān drumān ca eva bhasmakṛtvā pradhāvati
27. Indeed, that flaming arrow, accompanied by flesh-eaters, once released in battle, turns shrubs and trees into ashes and rushes forward.
ते तस्य तेजसा दग्धाः सैन्या वैवस्वतस्य तु ।
रणे तस्मिन्निपतिता दावदग्धा नगा इव ॥२८॥
28. te tasya tejasā dagdhāḥ sainyā vaivasvatasya tu ,
raṇe tasminnipatitā dāvadagdhā nagā iva.
28. te tasya tejasā dagdhāḥ sainyāḥ vaivasvatasya
tu raṇe tasmin nipatitāḥ dāvadagdhāḥ nagāḥ iva
28. te vaivasvatasya sainyāḥ tasya tejasā dagdhāḥ
tu tasmin raṇe dāvadagdhāḥ nagāḥ iva nipatitāḥ
28. Those soldiers of Yama (Vaivasvata), burned by his radiant power, fell in that battle like trees consumed by a forest fire.
ततः स सचिवैः सार्धं राक्षसो भीमविक्रमः ।
ननाद सुमहानादं कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम् ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ sa sacivaiḥ sārdhaṃ rākṣaso bhīmavikramaḥ ,
nanāda sumahānādaṃ kampayanniva medinīm.
29. tataḥ saḥ sacivaiḥ sārdham rākṣasaḥ bhīmavikramaḥ
nanāda sumahānādam kampayan iva medinīm
29. tataḥ saḥ bhīmavikramaḥ rākṣasaḥ sacivaiḥ
sārdham medinīm kampayan iva sumahānādam nanāda
29. Then, that demon of terrible prowess, accompanied by his ministers, let out a very loud roar, as if causing the earth to tremble.
