अथाब्रवीद्द्विजं रामः कथं ते भ्रातरो वने ।
कीदृशं तु तदा ब्रह्मंस्तपश्चेरुर्महाव्रताः ॥१॥
1. athābravīddvijaṃ rāmaḥ kathaṃ te bhrātaro vane ,
kīdṛśaṃ tu tadā brahmaṃstapaścerurmahāvratāḥ.

1. Then Rama asked the brahmin, 'How were your brothers in the forest? And what kind of spiritual discipline (tapas) did those with great vows perform then, O brahmin?'
अगस्त्यस्त्वब्रवीत्तत्र रामं प्रयत मानसं ।
तांस्तान्धर्मविधींस्तत्र भ्रातरस्ते समाविशन् ॥२॥
2. agastyastvabravīttatra rāmaṃ prayata mānasaṃ ,
tāṃstāndharmavidhīṃstatra bhrātaraste samāviśan.
2. agastyaḥ tu abravīt tatra rāmam prayatamanasam
tān tān dharmavidhīn tatra bhrātaraḥ te samāviśan

2. Agastya then spoke there to Rama, whose mind was focused, saying, 'Your brothers engaged in those various prescribed duties (dharma-vidhi) there.'
कुम्भकर्णस्तदा यत्तो नित्यं धर्मपरायणः ।
तताप ग्रैष्मिके काले पञ्चस्वग्निष्ववस्थितः ॥३॥
3. kumbhakarṇastadā yatto nityaṃ dharmaparāyaṇaḥ ,
tatāpa graiṣmike kāle pañcasvagniṣvavasthitaḥ.
3. kumbhakarṇaḥ tadā yattaḥ nityam dharmaparāyaṇaḥ
tatāpa graiṣmike kāle pañcasu agniṣu avasthitaḥ

3. At that time, Kumbhakarna, who was constantly committed to righteous conduct (dharma), undertook severe spiritual discipline by standing amidst five fires during the summer season.
वर्षे मेघोदकक्लिन्नो वीरासनमसेवत ।
नित्यं च शैशिरे काले जलमध्यप्रतिश्रयः ॥४॥
4. varṣe meghodakaklinno vīrāsanamasevata ,
nityaṃ ca śaiśire kāle jalamadhyapratiśrayaḥ.

4. During the rainy season, drenched by rainwater, he practiced the heroic posture (vīrāsana). And constantly, in the winter season, he stayed in the midst of water.
एवं वर्षसहस्राणि दश तस्यातिचक्रमुः ।
धर्मे प्रयतमानस्य सत्पथे निष्ठितस्य च ॥५॥
5. evaṃ varṣasahasrāṇi daśa tasyāticakramuḥ ,
dharme prayatamānasya satpathe niṣṭhitasya ca.

5. Thus, ten thousand years passed for him who was striving in his intrinsic nature (dharma) and firmly established on the righteous path.
विभीषणस्तु धर्मात्मा नित्यं धर्मपरः शुचिः ।
पञ्चवर्षसहस्राणि पादेनैकेन तस्थिवान् ॥६॥
6. vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā nityaṃ dharmaparaḥ śuciḥ ,
pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi pādenaikena tasthivān.
6. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu dharmātmā nityaṃ dharmaparaḥ
śuciḥ pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi pādena ekena tasthivān
6. tu vibhīṣaṇaḥ dharmātmā nityaṃ dharmaparaḥ

6. But Vibhīṣaṇa, a soul devoted to righteousness (dharmātmā), constantly focused on his inherent duty (dharma) and pure, stood on one foot for five thousand years.
समाप्ते नियमे तस्य ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ।
पपात पुष्पवर्षं च क्षुभिताश्चापि देवताः ॥७॥
7. samāpte niyame tasya nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ ,
papāta puṣpavarṣaṃ ca kṣubhitāścāpi devatāḥ.
7. samāpte niyame tasya nanṛtuḥ ca apsarogaṇāḥ
papāta puṣpavarṣaṃ ca kṣubhitāḥ ca api devatāḥ
7. tasya niyame samāpte apsarogaṇāḥ ca nanṛtuḥ
puṣpavarṣaṃ ca papāta devatāḥ ca api kṣubhitāḥ
7. When his spiritual discipline (niyama) was completed, hosts of celestial nymphs (apsarogaṇāḥ) danced, a shower of flowers fell, and even the deities became agitated.
पञ्चवर्षसहस्राणि सूर्यं चैवान्ववर्तत ।
तस्थौ चोर्ध्वशिरो बाहुः स्वाध्यायधृतमानसः ॥८॥
8. pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi sūryaṃ caivānvavartata ,
tasthau cordhvaśiro bāhuḥ svādhyāyadhṛtamānasaḥ.
8. pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi sūryaṃ ca eva anvavartata
tasthau ca ūrdhvaśirobāhuḥ svādhyāyadhṛtamānasaḥ
8. pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi ca eva sūryaṃ anvavartata ca
ūrdhvaśirobāhuḥ svādhyāyadhṛtamānasaḥ tasthau
8. For five thousand years, he also always faced the sun. And he stood with his head and arms raised, his mind fixed on the study of sacred texts (svādhyāya).
एवं विभीषणस्यापि गतानि नियतात्मनः ।
दशवर्षसहस्राणि स्वर्गस्थस्येव नन्दने ॥९॥
9. evaṃ vibhīṣaṇasyāpi gatāni niyatātmanaḥ ,
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi svargasthasyeva nandane.
9. evaṃ vibhīṣaṇasya api gatāni niyatātmanaḥ
daśa-varṣa-sahasrāṇi svargasthasya iva nandane
9. In this manner, for the self-controlled Vibhishana, ten thousand years passed as if he were dwelling in the Nandana garden of heaven.
दशवर्षसहस्रं तु निराहारो दशाननः ।
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु शिरश्चाग्नौ जुहाव सः ॥१०॥
10. daśavarṣasahasraṃ tu nirāhāro daśānanaḥ ,
pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu śiraścāgnau juhāva saḥ.
10. daśa-varṣa-sahasraṃ tu nirāhāraḥ daśānanaḥ
pūrṇe varṣa-sahasre tu śiraḥ ca agnau juhāva saḥ
10. The ten-faced (Ravana) fasted for ten thousand years. Upon the completion of a thousand years, he offered his head into the fire.
एवं वर्षसहस्राणि नव तस्यातिचक्रमुः ।
शिरांसि नव चाप्यस्य प्रविष्टानि हुताशनम् ॥११॥
11. evaṃ varṣasahasrāṇi nava tasyāticakramuḥ ,
śirāṃsi nava cāpyasya praviṣṭāni hutāśanam.
11. evaṃ varṣa-sahasrāṇi nava tasya aticakramuḥ
śirāṃsi nava ca api asya praviṣṭāni hutāśanam
11. In this manner, nine thousand years passed for him. And nine of his heads also entered the fire.
अथ वर्षसहस्रे तु दशमे दशमं शिरः ।
छेत्तुकामः स धर्मात्मा प्राप्तश्चात्र पितामहः ॥१२॥
12. atha varṣasahasre tu daśame daśamaṃ śiraḥ ,
chettukāmaḥ sa dharmātmā prāptaścātra pitāmahaḥ.
12. atha varṣa-sahasre tu daśame daśamaṃ śiraḥ
chettukāmaḥ saḥ dharmātmā prāptaḥ ca atra pitāmahaḥ
12. Then, in the tenth thousand-year period, as he (Ravana) was about to cut off his tenth head, the Grandfather (Brahmā), righteous in spirit (dharma), arrived there.
पितामहस्तु सुप्रीतः सार्धं देवैरुपस्थितः ।
वत्स वत्स दशग्रीव प्रीतो ऽस्मीत्यभ्यभाषत ॥१३॥
13. pitāmahastu suprītaḥ sārdhaṃ devairupasthitaḥ ,
vatsa vatsa daśagrīva prīto'smītyabhyabhāṣata.
13. pitāmahaḥ tu suprītaḥ sārdham devaiḥ upasthitaḥ |
vatsa vatsa daśagrīva prītaḥ asmi iti abhyabhāṣata
13. pitāmahaḥ tu devaiḥ sārdham suprītaḥ upasthitaḥ "vatsa vatsa daśagrīva,
asmi prītaḥ" iti abhyabhāṣata
13. The Grandfather (Brahmā), greatly pleased and accompanied by the gods, then addressed him, saying, "My child, my child, O Daśagrīva, I am pleased with you."
शीघ्रं वरय धर्मज्ञ वरो यस्ते ऽभिकाङ्क्षितः ।
किं ते कामं करोम्यद्य न वृथा ते परिश्रमः ॥१४॥
14. śīghraṃ varaya dharmajña varo yaste'bhikāṅkṣitaḥ ,
kiṃ te kāmaṃ karomyadya na vṛthā te pariśramaḥ.
14. śīghram varaya dharmajña varaḥ yaḥ te abhikāṅkṣitaḥ
| kim te kāmam karomi adya na vṛthā te pariśramaḥ
14. dharmajña,
yaḥ varaḥ te abhikāṅkṣitaḥ,
(tam) śīghram varaya adya te kim kāmam karomi? te pariśramaḥ na vṛthā (asti).
14. O knower of natural law (dharma), quickly choose the boon that you desire. What wish shall I fulfill for you today? Your effort has not been in vain.
ततो ऽब्रवीद्दशग्रीवः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं हर्षगद्गदया गिरा ॥१५॥
15. tato'bravīddaśagrīvaḥ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ,
praṇamya śirasā devaṃ harṣagadgadayā girā.
15. tataḥ abravīt daśagrīvaḥ prahṛṣṭena antarātmanā
| praṇamya śirasā devam harṣagadgadayā girā
15. tataḥ daśagrīvaḥ prahṛṣṭena antarātmanā devam śirasā praṇamya harṣagadgadayā girā abravīt.
15. Then Daśagrīva, with a joyful inner self (antarātman), bowed his head to the god and spoke with a voice choked with delight.
भगवन्प्राणिनां नित्यं नान्यत्र मरणाद्भयम् ।
नास्ति मृत्युसमः शत्रुरमरत्वमतो वृणे ॥१६॥
16. bhagavanprāṇināṃ nityaṃ nānyatra maraṇādbhayam ,
nāsti mṛtyusamaḥ śatruramaratvamato vṛṇe.
16. bhagavan prāṇinām nityam na anyatra maraṇāt bhayam
| na asti mṛtyusamaḥ śatruḥ amaratvam ataḥ vṛṇe
16. bhagavan,
prāṇinām nityam bhayam maraṇāt eva,
na anyatra.
mṛtyusamaḥ śatruḥ na asti.
ataḥ (aham) amaratvam vṛṇe.
16. O worshipful Lord (bhagavan), for living beings, there is always fear only from death, and from nothing else. There is no enemy equal to death. Therefore, I request immortality.
सुपर्णनागयक्षाणां दैत्यदानवरक्षसाम् ।
अवध्यः स्यां प्रजाध्यक्ष देवतानां च शाश्वतम् ॥१७॥
17. suparṇanāgayakṣāṇāṃ daityadānavarakṣasām ,
avadhyaḥ syāṃ prajādhyakṣa devatānāṃ ca śāśvatam.
17. suparṇanāgayakṣāṇām daityadānavarakṣasām
avadhyaḥ syām prajādhyakṣa devatānām ca śāśvatam
17. prajādhyakṣa suparṇanāgayakṣāṇām daityadānavarakṣasām
devatānām ca śāśvatam avadhyaḥ syām
17. O Chief of creation, may I be forever invincible to Suparṇas, Nāgas, Yakṣas, Daityas, Dānavas, Rakṣasas, and the gods.
न हि चिन्ता ममान्येषु प्राणिष्वमरपूजित ।
तृणभूता हि मे सर्वे प्राणिनो मानुषादयः ॥१८॥
18. na hi cintā mamānyeṣu prāṇiṣvamarapūjita ,
tṛṇabhūtā hi me sarve prāṇino mānuṣādayaḥ.
18. na hi cintā mama anyeṣu prāṇiṣu amarapūjita
tṛṇabhūtāḥ hi me sarve prāṇinaḥ mānuṣādayaḥ
18. amarapūjita mama anyeṣu prāṇiṣu cintā na hi
me sarve mānuṣādayaḥ prāṇinaḥ hi tṛṇabhūtāḥ
18. O revered by the immortals, I truly have no concern for other living beings. Indeed, all creatures, including humans and others, are as insignificant as grass to me.
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा दशग्रीवेण रक्षसा ।
उवाच वचनं राम सह देवैः पितामहः ॥१९॥
19. evamuktastu dharmātmā daśagrīveṇa rakṣasā ,
uvāca vacanaṃ rāma saha devaiḥ pitāmahaḥ.
19. evam uktaḥ tu dharmātmā daśagrīveṇa rakṣasā
uvāca vacanam rāma saha devaiḥ pitāmahaḥ
19. rāma evam daśagrīveṇa rakṣasā uktaḥ tu
dharmātmā pitāmahaḥ devaiḥ saha vacanam uvāca
19. O Rāma, when the righteous (dharma)-souled Grandfather (Brahmā) was thus addressed by the demon Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa), he spoke these words along with the gods.
भविष्यत्येवमेवैतत्तव राक्षसपुंगव ।
शृणु चापि वचो भूयः प्रीतस्येह शुभं मम ॥२०॥
20. bhaviṣyatyevamevaitattava rākṣasapuṃgava ,
śṛṇu cāpi vaco bhūyaḥ prītasyeha śubhaṃ mama.
20. bhaviṣyati evam eva etat tava rākṣasapuṅgava śṛṇu
ca api vacaḥ bhūyaḥ prītasya iha śubham mama
20. rākṣasapuṅgava tava etat evam eva bhaviṣyati ca
api bhūyaḥ iha prītasya mama śubham vacaḥ śṛṇu
20. O foremost among Rakṣasas, this will indeed happen just as you wish. And hear also my further auspicious words, spoken here by me who am pleased.
हुतानि यानि शीर्षाणि पूर्वमग्नौ त्वयानघ ।
पुनस्तानि भविष्यन्ति तथैव तव राक्षस ॥२१॥
21. hutāni yāni śīrṣāṇi pūrvamagnau tvayānagha ,
punastāni bhaviṣyanti tathaiva tava rākṣasa.
21. hutāni yāni śīrṣāṇi pūrvam agnau tvayā anagha
punaḥ tāni bhaviṣyanti tathā eva tava rākṣasa
21. anagha rākṣasa yāni śīrṣāṇi pūrvam agnau tvayā
hutāni tāni punaḥ tathā eva tava bhaviṣyanti
21. O sinless one, the heads that you formerly offered into the fire, those very same will reappear for you, O demon (rākṣasa).
एवं पितामहोक्तस्य दशग्रीवस्य रक्षसः ।
अग्नौ हुतानि शीर्षाणि यानि तान्युत्थितानि वै ॥२२॥
22. evaṃ pitāmahoktasya daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ ,
agnau hutāni śīrṣāṇi yāni tānyutthitāni vai.
22. evam pitāmaha uktasya daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ
agnau hutāni śīrṣāṇi yāni tāni utthitāni vai
22. evam pitāmaha uktasya daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ
yāni śīrṣāṇi agnau hutāni tāni vai utthitāni
22. Thus, for the demon (rākṣasa) Daśagrīva, whose heads had been offered into the fire, as declared by the grandfather (pitāmaha), those very heads indeed rose up again.
एवमुक्त्व्वा तु तं राम दशग्रीवं प्रजापतिः ।
विभीषणमथोवाच वाक्यं लोकपितामहः ॥२३॥
23. evamuktvvā tu taṃ rāma daśagrīvaṃ prajāpatiḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇamathovāca vākyaṃ lokapitāmahaḥ.
23. evam uktvā tu tam rāma daśagrīvam prajāpatiḥ
vibhīṣaṇam atha uvāca vākyam lokapitāmahaḥ
23. rāma prajāpatiḥ lokapitāmahaḥ tu evam tam
daśagrīvam uktvā atha vibhīṣaṇam vākyam uvāca
23. Having thus spoken to that Daśagrīva, O Rāma, Prajāpati (the lord of creation), the progenitor of the worlds (lokapitāmaha), then addressed Vibhīṣaṇa with these words.
विभीषण त्वया वत्स धर्मसंहितबुद्धिना ।
परितुष्टो ऽस्मि धर्मज्ञ वरं वरय सुव्रत ॥२४॥
24. vibhīṣaṇa tvayā vatsa dharmasaṃhitabuddhinā ,
parituṣṭo'smi dharmajña varaṃ varaya suvrata.
24. vibhīṣaṇa tvayā vatsa dharma saṃhita buddhinā
parituṣṭaḥ asmi dharmajña varam varaya suvrata
24. vibhīṣaṇa vatsa tvayā dharma saṃhita buddhinā
asmi parituṣṭaḥ dharmajña suvrata varam varaya
24. O Vibhīṣaṇa, O child, because of your mind endowed with righteousness (dharma), I am exceedingly pleased. O knower of righteousness (dharma), O one of good vows, choose a boon.
विभीषणस्तु धर्मात्मा वचनं प्राह साञ्जलिः ।
वृतः सर्वगुणैर्नित्यं चन्द्रमा इव रश्मिभिः ॥२५॥
25. vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā vacanaṃ prāha sāñjaliḥ ,
vṛtaḥ sarvaguṇairnityaṃ candramā iva raśmibhiḥ.
25. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu dharma-ātmā vacanam prāha sa-añjaliḥ
vṛtaḥ sarva-guṇaiḥ nityam candramāḥ iva raśmibhiḥ
25. dharma-ātmā sa-añjaliḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu vacanam prāha
(saḥ) nityam sarva-guṇaiḥ vṛtaḥ candramāḥ raśmibhiḥ iva
25. But Vibhishana, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, spoke with folded hands, always surrounded by all virtues, just as the moon is encircled by its rays.
भगवन् कृतकृत्यो ऽहं यन्मे लोकगुरुः स्वयम् ।
प्रीतो यदि त्वं दातव्यं वरं मे शृणु सुव्रत ॥२६॥
26. bhagavan kṛtakṛtyo'haṃ yanme lokaguruḥ svayam ,
prīto yadi tvaṃ dātavyaṃ varaṃ me śṛṇu suvrata.
26. bhagavan kṛta-kṛtyaḥ aham yat me loka-guruḥ svayam
prītaḥ yadi tvam dātavyam varam me śṛṇu su-vrata
26. bhagavan su-vrata,
aham kṛta-kṛtyaḥ (asmi),
yat me loka-guruḥ tvam svayam prītaḥ (asi) yadi tvam prītaḥ (asi),
(tataḥ) me dātavyam varam śṛṇu
26. O Lord, I am one whose task is accomplished, since you, the preceptor (guru) of the world, are yourself pleased with me. If you are pleased, then hear the boon that should be granted to me, O virtuous one.
या या मे जायते बुद्धिर्येषु येष्वाश्रमेष्विह ।
सा सा भवतु धर्मिष्ठा तं तं धर्मं च पालये ॥२७॥
27. yā yā me jāyate buddhiryeṣu yeṣvāśrameṣviha ,
sā sā bhavatu dharmiṣṭhā taṃ taṃ dharmaṃ ca pālaye.
27. yā yā me jāyate buddhiḥ yeṣu yeṣu āśrameṣu iha sā
sā bhavatu dharm-iṣṭhā tam tam dharmam ca pālaye
27. iha yeṣu yeṣu āśrameṣu me yā yā buddhiḥ jāyate,
sā sā dharm-iṣṭhā bhavatu,
ca tam tam dharmam pālaye
27. Whatever type of understanding (buddhi) arises in me in whichever stages of life (āśrama) here on Earth, may that understanding always be supremely rooted in natural law (dharma), and may I uphold that particular natural law (dharma).
एष मे परमोदार वरः परमको मतः ।
न हि धर्माभिरक्तानां लोके किं चन दुर्लभम् ॥२८॥
28. eṣa me paramodāra varaḥ paramako mataḥ ,
na hi dharmābhiraktānāṃ loke kiṃ cana durlabham.
28. eṣaḥ me parama-udāraḥ varaḥ paramakaḥ mataḥ na
hi dharma-abhiraktānām loke kim cana durlabham
28. eṣaḥ parama-udāraḥ paramakaḥ varaḥ me mataḥ hi (tathā
hi) loke dharma-abhiraktānām kim cana durlabham na (asti)
28. This boon, which is most generous and supreme, is considered by me. For truly, nothing is difficult to obtain in this world for those who are deeply devoted to natural law (dharma).
अथ प्रजापतिः प्रीतो विभीषणमुवाच ह ।
धर्मिष्ठस्त्वं यथा वत्स तथा चैतद्भविष्यति ॥२९॥
29. atha prajāpatiḥ prīto vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha ,
dharmiṣṭhastvaṃ yathā vatsa tathā caitadbhaviṣyati.
29. atha prajāpatiḥ prītaḥ vibhīṣaṇam uvāca ha
dharmiṣṭhaḥ tvam yathā vatsa tathā ca etat bhaviṣyati
29. atha prītaḥ prajāpatiḥ vibhīṣaṇam uvāca ha vatsa
yathā tvam dharmiṣṭhaḥ tathā ca etat bhaviṣyati
29. Then, Prajāpati, pleased, spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa: 'Dear son, as you are most righteous (dharmiṣṭha), so shall this be.'
यस्माद् राक्षसयोनौ ते जातस्यामित्रकर्षण ।
नाधर्मे जायते बुद्धिरमरत्वं ददामि ते ॥३०॥
30. yasmād rākṣasayonau te jātasyāmitrakarṣaṇa ,
nādharme jāyate buddhiramaratvaṃ dadāmi te.
30. yasmāt rākṣasayonau te jātasya amitrakarṣaṇa
na adharme jāyate buddhiḥ amaratvam dadāmi te
30. amitrakarṣaṇa yasmāt rākṣasayonau jātasya te
buddhiḥ adharme na jāyate ataḥ te amaratvam dadāmi
30. Because, O subduer of foes, though born in a demon lineage, your inclination (buddhi) does not arise in unrighteousness (adharma), I grant you immortality.
कुम्भकर्णाय तु वरं प्रयच्छन्तमरिंदम ।
प्रजापतिं सुराः सर्वे वाक्यं प्राञ्जलयो ऽब्रुवन् ॥३१॥
31. kumbhakarṇāya tu varaṃ prayacchantamariṃdama ,
prajāpatiṃ surāḥ sarve vākyaṃ prāñjalayo'bruvan.

prajāpatim surāḥ sarve vākyam prāñjalayaḥ abruvan
31. tu ariṃdamam prajāpatim kumbhakarṇāya varam
prayacchantam sarve surāḥ prāñjalayaḥ vākyam abruvan
31. But as Prajāpati, the subduer of enemies, was granting a boon to Kumbhakarṇa, all the gods, with folded hands, spoke these words to him.
न तावत् कुम्भकर्णाय प्रदातव्यो वरस्त्वया ।
जानीषे हि यथा लोकांस्त्रासयत्येष दुर्मतिः ॥३२॥
32. na tāvat kumbhakarṇāya pradātavyo varastvayā ,
jānīṣe hi yathā lokāṃstrāsayatyeṣa durmatiḥ.
32. na tāvat kumbhakarṇāya pradātavyaḥ varaḥ tvayā
jānīṣe hi yathā lokān trāsayati eṣaḥ durmatiḥ
32. tāvat kumbhakarṇāya varaḥ tvayā na pradātavyaḥ
hi yathā eṣaḥ durmatiḥ lokān त्रासयति jānīṣe
32. Therefore, a boon should not be granted by you to Kumbhakarṇa, for you surely know how this evil-minded one terrorizes the worlds.
नन्दने ऽप्सरसः सप्त महेन्द्रानुचरा दश ।
अनेन भक्षिता ब्रह्मनृषयो मानुषास्तथा ॥३३॥
33. nandane'psarasaḥ sapta mahendrānucarā daśa ,
anena bhakṣitā brahmanṛṣayo mānuṣāstathā.
33. nandane apsarasaḥ sapta mahendrānucarāḥ daśa
anena bhakṣitāḥ brahmanṛṣayaḥ mānuṣāḥ tathā
33. anena nandane sapta apsarasaḥ daśa mahendrānucarāḥ
brahmanṛṣayaḥ mānuṣāḥ tathā bhakṣitāḥ
33. Seven Apsaras and ten attendants of Mahendra (Indra) were devoured by him in the Nandana garden. Brahmin sages and humans were also consumed.
वरव्याजेन मोहो ऽस्मै दीयताममितप्रभ ।
लोकानां स्वस्ति चैव स्याद्भवेदस्य च संनतिः ॥३४॥
34. varavyājena moho'smai dīyatāmamitaprabha ,
lokānāṃ svasti caiva syādbhavedasya ca saṃnatiḥ.
34. varavyājena mohaḥ asmai dīyatām amitaprabha
lokānām svasti ca eva syāt bhavet asya ca sannatiḥ
34. amitaprabha,
varavyājena asmai mohaḥ dīyatām ca lokānām svasti eva syāt ca asya sannatiḥ bhavet
34. O lord of immeasurable splendor, let delusion be granted to him under the pretext of a boon. May there be well-being for the worlds, and may he be subdued.
एवमुक्तः सुरैर्ब्रह्माचिन्तयत् पद्मसंभवः ।
चिन्तिता चोपतस्थे ऽस्य पार्श्वं देवी सरस्वती ॥३५॥
35. evamuktaḥ surairbrahmācintayat padmasaṃbhavaḥ ,
cintitā copatasthe'sya pārśvaṃ devī sarasvatī.
35. evam uktaḥ suraiḥ brahmā acintayat padmasambhavaḥ
cintitā ca upatasthe asya pārśvam devī sarasvatī
35. evam suraiḥ uktaḥ padmasambhavaḥ brahmā acintayat
ca cintitā devī sarasvatī asya pārśvam upatasthe
35. Thus addressed by the gods, Brahmā, the lotus-born, pondered. And, as he pondered, the goddess Sarasvatī appeared by his side.
प्राञ्जलिः सा तु पर्श्वस्था प्राह वाक्यं सरस्वती ।
इयमस्म्यागता देवकिं कार्यं करवाण्यहम् ॥३६॥
36. prāñjaliḥ sā tu parśvasthā prāha vākyaṃ sarasvatī ,
iyamasmyāgatā devakiṃ kāryaṃ karavāṇyaham.
36. prāñjaliḥ sā tu pārśvasthā prāha vākyam sarasvatī
iyam asmi āgatā deva kim kāryam karavāṇi aham
36. sā sarasvatī tu prāñjaliḥ pārśvasthā vākyam prāha: "deva,
iyam asmi āgatā,
aham kim kāryam karavāṇi?"
36. And she, Sarasvatī, standing by his side with folded hands, spoke these words: 'O god, I have come; what task shall I perform?'
प्रजापतिस्तु तां प्राप्तां प्राह वाक्यं सरस्वतीम् ।
वाणि त्वं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भव या देवतेप्सिता ॥३७॥
37. prajāpatistu tāṃ prāptāṃ prāha vākyaṃ sarasvatīm ,
vāṇi tvaṃ rākṣasendrasya bhava yā devatepsitā.
37. prajāpatiḥ tu tām prāptām prāha vākyam sarasvatīm
vāṇi tvam rākṣasendrasya bhava yā devatā īpsitā
37. tu prajāpatiḥ tām prāptām sarasvatīm vākyam prāha
vāṇi tvam rākṣasendrasya yā īpsitā devatā bhava
37. Lord Brahmā then said to Sarasvati, who had arrived, "O Vāṇī, you shall be the deity desired by the king of rākṣasas."
तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रविष्टा सा प्रजापतिरथाब्रवीत् ।
कुम्भकर्ण महाबाहो वरं वरय यो मतः ॥३८॥
38. tathetyuktvā praviṣṭā sā prajāpatirathābravīt ,
kumbhakarṇa mahābāho varaṃ varaya yo mataḥ.
38. tathā iti uktvā praviṣṭā sā prajāpatiḥ atha
abravīt kumbhakarṇa mahābāho varam varaya yaḥ mataḥ
38. sā tathā iti uktvā praviṣṭā atha prajāpatiḥ abravīt
he kumbhakarṇa he mahābāho yaḥ mataḥ varam varaya
38. Having said "So be it," she (Sarasvati) entered. Then Lord Brahmā spoke, "O mighty-armed Kumbhakarṇa, choose the boon that is desired by you."
कुम्भकर्णस्तु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा वचनमब्रवीत् ।
स्वप्तुं वर्षाण्यनेकानि देवदेव ममेप्सितम् ॥३९॥
39. kumbhakarṇastu tadvākyaṃ śrutvā vacanamabravīt ,
svaptuṃ varṣāṇyanekāni devadeva mamepsitam.
39. kumbhakarṇaḥ tu tat vākyam śrutvā vacanam abravīt
svaptum varṣāṇi anekāni devadeva mama īpsitam
39. tu kumbhakarṇaḥ tat vākyam śrutvā vacanam abravīt
he devadeva mama anekāni varṣāṇi svaptum īpsitam
39. But Kumbhakarṇa, having heard those words, spoke a statement: "O lord of gods, my desire is to sleep for many years."
एवमस्त्विति तं चोक्त्वा सह देवैः पितामहः ।
देवी सरस्वती चैव मुक्त्वा तं प्रययौ दिवम् ॥४०॥
40. evamastviti taṃ coktvā saha devaiḥ pitāmahaḥ ,
devī sarasvatī caiva muktvā taṃ prayayau divam.
40. evam astu iti tam ca uktvā saha devaiḥ pitāmahaḥ
devī sarasvatī ca eva muktvā tam prayayau divam
40. evam astu iti tam ca uktvā tam muktvā pitāmahaḥ
devī sarasvatī ca eva devaiḥ saha divam prayayau
40. Having said "So be it" to him and having released him, Lord Brahmā (the grandfather) departed to heaven along with the gods and Goddess Sarasvati.
कुम्भकर्णस्तु दुष्टात्मा चिन्तयामास दुःखितः ।
कीर्दृशं किं न्विदं वाक्यं ममाद्य वदनाच्च्युतम् ॥४१॥
41. kumbhakarṇastu duṣṭātmā cintayāmāsa duḥkhitaḥ ,
kīrdṛśaṃ kiṃ nvidaṃ vākyaṃ mamādya vadanāccyutam.
41. kumbhakarṇaḥ tu duṣṭātmā cintayāmāsa duḥkhitaḥ |
kīrdaśam kim nu idam vākyam mama adya vadanāt cyutam
41. duṣṭātmā duḥkhitaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ tu cintayāmāsa adya
mama vadanāt cyutam idam kim nu kīrdaśam vākyam
41. Kumbhakarna, with his wicked spirit (ātman), pondered sorrowfully, "What kind of statement is this, indeed, that has come from my mouth today?"
एवं लब्धवराः सर्वे भ्रातरो दीप्ततेजसः ।
श्लेष्मातकवनं गत्वा तत्र ते न्यवसन् सुखम् ॥४२॥
42. evaṃ labdhavarāḥ sarve bhrātaro dīptatejasaḥ ,
śleṣmātakavanaṃ gatvā tatra te nyavasan sukham.
42. evam labdhavarāḥ sarve bhrātaraḥ dīptatejasaḥ |
śleṣmātaka-vanam gatvā tatra te nyavasan sukham
42. evam labdhavarāḥ dīptatejasaḥ sarve bhrātaraḥ
śleṣmātaka-vanam gatvā tatra te sukham nyavasan
42. Thus, all the brothers, having obtained boons and endowed with radiant splendor, went to the Śleṣmātaka forest and lived there happily.
