स विसृज्य ततो रामः पुष्पकं हेमभूषितम् ।
प्रविवेश महाबाहुरशोकवनिकां तदा ॥१॥
1. sa visṛjya tato rāmaḥ puṣpakaṃ hemabhūṣitam ,

1. Then, the mighty-armed Rama, having dismissed the gold-adorned Puṣpaka (aerial chariot), entered the Aśoka grove.

देवदारुवनैश्चापि समन्तादुपशोभिताम् ॥२॥
2. candanāgarucūtaiśca tuṅgakāleyakairapi ,
devadāruvanaiścāpi samantādupaśobhitām.

2. It (the Aśoka grove) was adorned on all sides with sandalwood, aloe wood, and mango trees, as well as tall kāleyaka trees and deodar groves.
प्रियङ्गुभिः कदम्बैश्च तथा कुरबकैरपि ।
जम्बूभिः पाटलीभिश्च कोविदारैश्च संवृताम् ॥३॥
3. priyaṅgubhiḥ kadambaiśca tathā kurabakairapi ,
jambūbhiḥ pāṭalībhiśca kovidāraiśca saṃvṛtām.

3. And it was covered with priyaṅgu, kadamba, and kurabaka trees, as well as with rose-apple, pāṭalī, and kovidāra trees.
सर्वदा कुसुमै रम्यैः फलवद्भिर्मनोरमैः ।
चारुपल्लवपुष्पाढ्यैर्मत्तभ्रमरसंकुलैः ॥४॥
4. sarvadā kusumai ramyaiḥ phalavadbhirmanoramaiḥ ,
cārupallavapuṣpāḍhyairmattabhramarasaṃkulaiḥ.

4. Always charming with beautiful flowers, delightful with fruits, abundant in lovely sprouts and blossoms, and teeming with intoxicated bees.
कोकिलैर्भृङ्गराजैश्च नानावर्णैश्च पक्षिभिः ।
शोभितां शतशश्चित्रैश्चूतवृक्षावतंसकैः ॥५॥
5. kokilairbhṛṅgarājaiśca nānāvarṇaiśca pakṣibhiḥ ,
śobhitāṃ śataśaścitraiścūtavṛkṣāvataṃsakaiḥ.

5. Adorned by cuckoos, king crows (drongos), and birds of various colors, and beautified by hundreds of variegated mango trees that are like splendid adornments.
शातकुम्भनिभाः के चित् के चिदग्निशिखोपमाः ।
नीलाञ्जननिभाश्चान्ये भान्ति तत्र स्म पादपाः ॥६॥
6. śātakumbhanibhāḥ ke cit ke cidagniśikhopamāḥ ,
nīlāñjananibhāścānye bhānti tatra sma pādapāḥ.

6. There, some trees shone like refined gold, others like flames of fire, and still others like blue collyrium.
दीर्घिका विविधाकाराः पूर्णाः परमवारिणा ।
महार्हमणिसोपानस्फटिकान्तरकुट्टिमाः ॥७॥
7. dīrghikā vividhākārāḥ pūrṇāḥ paramavāriṇā ,
mahārhamaṇisopānasphaṭikāntarakuṭṭimāḥ.

7. There were long pools of various shapes, filled with excellent water, and featuring crystal pavements within, alongside steps made of precious jewels.
फुल्लपद्मोत्पलवनाश्चक्रवाकोपशोभिताः ।
प्राकारैर्विविधाकारैः शोभिताश्च शिलातलैः ॥८॥
8. phullapadmotpalavanāścakravākopaśobhitāḥ ,
prākārairvividhākāraiḥ śobhitāśca śilātalaiḥ.

8. They were adorned with groves of blossoming lotuses and water lilies, graced by ruddy geese, and embellished with walls of various shapes and rock surfaces.
तत्र तत्र वनोद्देशे वैदूर्यमणिसंनिभैः ।
शाद्वलैः परमोपेताः पुष्पितद्रुमसंयुताः ॥९॥
9. tatra tatra vanoddeśe vaidūryamaṇisaṃnibhaiḥ ,
śādvalaiḥ paramopetāḥ puṣpitadrumasaṃyutāḥ.

9. Here and there in the forest regions, they were exceedingly endowed with grassy expanses resembling sapphire gems and accompanied by flowering trees.
नन्दनं हि यथेन्द्रस्य ब्राह्मं चैत्ररथं यथा ।
तथारूपं हि रामस्य काननं तन्निवेशितम् ॥१०॥
10. nandanaṃ hi yathendrasya brāhmaṃ caitrarathaṃ yathā ,
tathārūpaṃ hi rāmasya kānanaṃ tanniveśitam.
10. nandanam hi yathā indrasya brāhmam caitraratham
yathā tathārūpam hi rāmasya kānanam tat niveśitam
10. tat rāmasya kānanam hi yathā indrasya nandanam,
yathā ca brāhmam caitraratham,
tathārūpam hi niveśitam
10. Indeed, that garden established for Rāma was of such a form, just like Indra's Nandana garden, or like the Caitraratha (garden) of Kubera.
बह्वासनगृहोपेतां लतागृहसमावृताम् ।
अशोकवनिकां स्फीतां प्रविश्य रघुनन्दनः ॥११॥
11. bahvāsanagṛhopetāṃ latāgṛhasamāvṛtām ,
aśokavanikāṃ sphītāṃ praviśya raghunandanaḥ.

aśokavanikām sphītām praviśya raghunandanaḥ

11. Having entered the vast and flourishing Aśoka grove, which was endowed with many resting places and surrounded by creeper-bowers, Rāma, the delight of the Raghus...
आसने तु शुभाकारे पुष्पस्तबकभूषिते ।
कुथास्तरणसंवीते रामः संनिषसाद ह ॥१२॥
12. āsane tu śubhākāre puṣpastabakabhūṣite ,
kuthāstaraṇasaṃvīte rāmaḥ saṃniṣasāda ha.

12. And Rama indeed sat down on a beautiful seat, adorned with flower bouquets and covered with a soft rug.
सीतां संगृह्य बाहुभ्यां मधुमैरेयमुत्तमम् ।
पाययामास काकुत्स्थः शचीमिन्द्रो यथामृतम् ॥१३॥
13. sītāṃ saṃgṛhya bāhubhyāṃ madhumaireyamuttamam ,
pāyayāmāsa kākutsthaḥ śacīmindro yathāmṛtam.
13. sītām saṃgṛhya bāhubhyām madhumaireyam uttamam
pāyayāmāsa kākutsthaḥ śacīm indraḥ yathā amṛtam
13. kākutsthaḥ bāhubhyām sītām saṃgṛhya uttamam madhumaireyam pāyayāmāsa,
yathā indraḥ śacīm amṛtam
13. Embracing Sita with his two arms, Rama, the descendant of Kakutstha, made her drink excellent Madhu-Maireya liquor, just as Indra makes Shachi drink nectar.
मांसानि च विचित्राणि फलानि विविधानि च ।
रामस्याभ्यवहारार्थं किंकरास्तूर्णमाहरन् ॥१४॥
14. māṃsāni ca vicitrāṇi phalāni vividhāni ca ,
rāmasyābhyavahārārthaṃ kiṃkarāstūrṇamāharan.
14. māṃsāni ca vicitrāṇi phalāni vividhāni ca
rāmasya abhyavahārārtham kiṃkarāḥ tūrṇam āharan
14. kiṃkarāḥ rāmasya abhyavahārārtham vicitrāṇi

14. And diverse meats and various fruits were quickly brought by the servants for Rama's meal.
उपनृत्यन्ति राजानं नृत्यगीतविशारदाः ।
बालाश्च रूपवत्यश्च स्त्रियः पानवशं गताः ॥१५॥
15. upanṛtyanti rājānaṃ nṛtyagītaviśāradāḥ ,
bālāśca rūpavatyaśca striyaḥ pānavaśaṃ gatāḥ.
15. upanṛtyanti rājānam nṛtyagītaviśāradāḥ bālāḥ
ca rūpavatyaḥ ca striyaḥ pānavasam gatāḥ
15. nṛtyagītaviśāradāḥ bālāḥ ca rūpavatyaḥ ca

15. Women skilled in dance and song, young and beautiful, who had fallen under the sway of drink, danced before the king.
एवं रामो मुदा युक्तः सीतां सुरुचिराननाम् ।
रमयामास वैदेहीमहन्यहनि देववत् ॥१६॥
16. evaṃ rāmo mudā yuktaḥ sītāṃ surucirānanām ,
ramayāmāsa vaidehīmahanyahani devavat.
16. evam rāmaḥ mudā yuktaḥ sītām surucirānanām
ramayāmāsa vaidehīm ahanyahani devavat
16. evam mudā yuktaḥ rāmaḥ surucirānanām
vaidehīm sītām devavat ahanyahani ramayāmāsa
16. In this way, Rama, filled with joy, enjoyed Vaidehi (Sita) of the very beautiful face, like a god, day after day.
तथा तु रममाणस्य तस्यैवं शिशिरः शुभः ।
अत्यक्रामन्नरेन्द्रस्य राघवस्य महात्मनः ॥१७॥
17. tathā tu ramamāṇasya tasyaivaṃ śiśiraḥ śubhaḥ ,
atyakrāmannarendrasya rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ.
17. tathā tu ramamāṇasya tasya evam śiśiraḥ śubhaḥ
atyakrāmat narendrasya rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ
17. tathā tu evam ramamāṇasya narendrasya mahātmanaḥ
tasya rāghavasya śubhaḥ śiśiraḥ atyakrāmat
17. While he was thus enjoying himself, the auspicious winter season passed for that great-souled (mahātman) king, Raghava (Rama).
पूर्वाह्णे पौरकृत्यानि कृत्वा धर्मेण धर्मवित् ।
शेषं दिवसभागार्धमन्तःपुरगतो ऽभवत् ॥१८॥
18. pūrvāhṇe paurakṛtyāni kṛtvā dharmeṇa dharmavit ,
śeṣaṃ divasabhāgārdhamantaḥpuragato'bhavat.
18. pūrvāhṇe paurakṛtyāni kṛtvā dharmeṇa dharmavit
śeṣam divasabhāgārdham antaḥpuragataḥ abhavat
18. dharmavit pūrvāhṇe dharmeṇa paurakṛtyāni kṛtvā

18. In the forenoon, the knower of constitutional law (dharma), having performed the civic duties according to the constitution (dharma), spent the remaining half of the day in the inner apartments.
सीता च देवकार्याणि कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकानि तु ।
श्वश्रूणामविशेषेण सर्वासां प्राञ्जलिः स्थिता ॥१९॥
19. sītā ca devakāryāṇi kṛtvā paurvāhṇikāni tu ,
śvaśrūṇāmaviśeṣeṇa sarvāsāṃ prāñjaliḥ sthitā.
19. sītā ca devakāryāṇi kṛtvā paurvāhṇikāni tu
śvaśrūṇām aviśeṣeṇa sarvāsām prāñjaliḥ sthitā

19. And Sita, having performed the divine ritual duties of the forenoon, stood with folded hands before all her mothers-in-law without any partiality.
ततो राममुपागच्छद्विचित्रबहुभूषणा ।
त्रिविष्टपे सहस्राक्षमुपविष्टं यथा शची ॥२०॥
20. tato rāmamupāgacchadvicitrabahubhūṣaṇā ,
triviṣṭape sahasrākṣamupaviṣṭaṃ yathā śacī.
20. tataḥ rāmam upāgacchat vicitrabahubhūṣaṇā
triviṣṭape sahasrākṣam upaviṣṭam yathā śacī
20. tataḥ vicitrabahubhūṣaṇā śacī yathā triviṣṭape
sahasrākṣam upaviṣṭam rāmam upāgacchat
20. Then, adorned with various beautiful ornaments, she approached Rāma, just as Śacī approaches Indra, the thousand-eyed one, seated in heaven.
दृष्ट्वा तु राघवः पत्नीं कल्याणेन समन्विताम् ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे साधु साध्विति चाब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. dṛṣṭvā tu rāghavaḥ patnīṃ kalyāṇena samanvitām ,
praharṣamatulaṃ lebhe sādhu sādhviti cābravīt.
21. dṛṣṭvā tu rāghavaḥ patnīm kalyāṇena samanvitām
praharṣam atulam lebhe sādhu sādhu iti ca abravīt
21. tu rāghavaḥ kalyāṇena samanvitām patnīm dṛṣṭvā
atulam praharṣam lebhe ca sādhu sādhu iti abravīt
21. But Rāma (Rāghava), having seen his wife, endowed with auspiciousness, felt immense joy and exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
अपत्यलाभो वैदेहि ममायं समुपस्थितः ।
किमिच्छसि हि तद्ब्रूहि कः कामः क्रियतां तव ॥२२॥
22. apatyalābho vaidehi mamāyaṃ samupasthitaḥ ,
kimicchasi hi tadbrūhi kaḥ kāmaḥ kriyatāṃ tava.
22. apatyalābhaḥ vaidehi mama ayam samupasthitaḥ
kim icchasi hi tat brūhi kaḥ kāmaḥ kriyatām tava
22. vaidehi mama ayam apatyalābhaḥ samupasthitaḥ hi
kim icchasi tat brūhi kaḥ kāmaḥ tava kriyatām
22. O Vaidehī, this attainment of progeny has now come to me. What is it that you truly wish? Tell me that. What desire should be fulfilled for you?
प्रहसन्ती तु वैदेही रामं वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ।
तपोवनानि पुण्यानि द्रष्टुमिच्छामि राघव ॥२३॥
23. prahasantī tu vaidehī rāmaṃ vākyamathābravīt ,
tapovanāni puṇyāni draṣṭumicchāmi rāghava.
23. prahasantī tu vaidehī rāmam vākyam atha abravīt
tapovanāni puṇyāni draṣṭum icchāmi rāghava
23. tu prahasantī vaidehī atha rāmam vākyam abravīt:
rāghava puṇyāni tapovanāni draṣṭum icchāmi
23. But Vaidehī, smiling, then spoke this word to Rāma: 'O Rāma (Rāghava), I wish to see the sacred hermitages.'
गङ्गातीरे निविष्टानि ऋषीणां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
फलमूलाशिनां वीर पादमूलेषु वर्तितुम् ॥२४॥
24. gaṅgātīre niviṣṭāni ṛṣīṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām ,
phalamūlāśināṃ vīra pādamūleṣu vartitum.
24. gaṅgātīre niviṣṭāni ṛṣīṇām puṇyakarmaṇām
phalamūlāśinām vīra pādamūleṣu vartitum
24. vīra gaṅgātīre niviṣṭāni puṇyakarmaṇām
phalamūlāśinām ṛṣīṇām pādamūleṣu vartitum
24. O hero, I wish to dwell at the feet (of the trees) where the sages, whose meritorious actions (karma) are virtuous and who subsist on fruits and roots, are settled on the banks of the Gaṅgā.
एष मे परमः कामो यन्मूलफलभोजिषु ।
अप्येकरात्रं काकुत्स्थ वसेयं पुण्यशालिषु ॥२५॥
25. eṣa me paramaḥ kāmo yanmūlaphalabhojiṣu ,
apyekarātraṃ kākutstha vaseyaṃ puṇyaśāliṣu.
25. eṣa me paramaḥ kāmaḥ yat mūlaphala-bhojiṣu
api ekarātram kākutstha vaseyam puṇyaśāliṣu
25. kākutstha eṣaḥ me paramaḥ kāmaḥ yat api
ekarātram puṇyaśāliṣu mūlaphala-bhojiṣu vaseyam
25. O Kakutstha, this is my highest desire, that I might dwell even for one night among the meritorious (sages) who subsist on roots and fruits.
तथेति च प्रतिज्ञातं रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।
विस्रब्धा भव वैदेहि श्वो गमिष्यस्यसंशयम् ॥२६॥
26. tatheti ca pratijñātaṃ rāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā ,
visrabdhā bhava vaidehi śvo gamiṣyasyasaṃśayam.
26. tathā iti ca pratijñātam rāmeṇa akliṣṭakarmaṇā
visrabdhā bhava vaidehi śvaḥ gamiṣyasi asaṃśayam
26. rāmeṇa akliṣṭakarmaṇā ca tathā iti pratijñātam
vaidehi visrabdhā bhava śvaḥ asaṃśayam gamiṣyasi
26. And Rāma, whose untiring actions (karma) are unblemished, assented, saying, 'So be it.' He then told Sītā, 'Be confident, O Vaidehī; tomorrow you will certainly go.'
एवमुक्त्वा तु काकुत्स्थो मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम् ।
मध्यकक्षान्तरं रामो निर्जगाम सुहृद्वृतः ॥२७॥
27. evamuktvā tu kākutstho maithilīṃ janakātmajām ,
madhyakakṣāntaraṃ rāmo nirjagāma suhṛdvṛtaḥ.
27. evam uktvā tu kākutsthaḥ maithilīm janakātmajām
rāmaḥ madhyakakṣāntaram nirjagāma suhṛdvṛtaḥ

27. Having thus spoken to Maithilī, Janaka's daughter, Rāma, accompanied by his friends, then departed for the inner apartment.
