निविष्टायां तु सेनायामुत्सुको भरतस्तदा ।
जगाम भ्रातरं द्रष्टुं शत्रुघ्नमनुदर्शयन् ॥१॥
1. niviṣṭāyāṃ tu senāyāmutsuko bharatastadā ,

1. When the army had encamped, the eager Bharata then set out to see his brother (Rāma), leading Śatrughna along.
ऋषिं वसिष्ठं संदिश्य मातॄर्मे शीघ्रमानय ।
इति तरितमग्रे स जागम गुरुवत्सलः ॥२॥
2. ṛṣiṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ saṃdiśya mātṝrme śīghramānaya ,
iti taritamagre sa jāgama guruvatsalaḥ.
2. ṛṣim vasiṣṭham saṃdiśya mātṝḥ me śīghram
ānaya iti taritam agre saḥ jagāma guruvatsalaḥ
2. saḥ guruvatsalaḥ vasiṣṭham ṛṣim "me mātṝḥ śīghram ānaya" iti saṃdiśya,
taritam agre jagāma.
2. Having instructed the sage Vasiṣṭha with the words, "Bring my mothers quickly," he, who was devoted to his preceptor (guru), then swiftly went forward.
सुमन्त्रस्त्वपि शतुघ्नमदूरादन्वपद्यत ।
रामदार्शनजस्तर्षो भरतस्येव तस्य च ॥३॥
3. sumantrastvapi śatughnamadūrādanvapadyata ,
rāmadārśanajastarṣo bharatasyeva tasya ca.
3. sumantraḥ tu api śatrughnam adūrāt anvapadyata
rāmadarśanajaḥ tarṣaḥ bharatasya iva tasya ca
3. sumantraḥ tu api adūrāt śatrughnam anvapadyata.
bharatasya iva tasya ca rāmadarśanajaḥ tarṣaḥ (āsīt).
3. Sumantra, too, followed Shatrughna closely. For Shatrughna, just as for Bharata, there was a longing born from the sight of Rāma.
गच्छन्नेवाथ भरतस्तापसालयसंस्थिताम् ।
भ्रातुः पर्णकुटीं श्रीमानुटजं च ददर्श ह ॥४॥
4. gacchannevātha bharatastāpasālayasaṃsthitām ,
bhrātuḥ parṇakuṭīṃ śrīmānuṭajaṃ ca dadarśa ha.
4. gacchan eva atha bharataḥ tāpasālayasaṃsthitām
bhrātuḥ parṇakuṭīm śrīmān uṭajam ca dadarśa ha

4. Then, as he was proceeding, the glorious Bharata saw his brother's leaf-hut, a small hermitage (uṭaja) situated within the hermitage grounds.
शालायास्त्वग्रतस्तस्या ददर्श भरतस्तदा ।
काष्टानि चावभग्नानि पुष्पाण्यवचितानि च ॥५॥
5. śālāyāstvagratastasyā dadarśa bharatastadā ,
kāṣṭāni cāvabhagnāni puṣpāṇyavacitāni ca.
5. śālāyāḥ tu agrataḥ tasyāḥ dadarśa bharataḥ tadā
kāṣṭāni ca avabhagnāni puṣpāṇi avacitāni ca
5. tadā bharataḥ tasyāḥ śālāyāḥ agrataḥ avabhagnāni kāṣṭāni ca avacitāni puṣpāṇi ca dadarśa.
5. Then, in front of that hut, Bharata saw broken pieces of wood and gathered flowers.
ददर्श च वने तस्मिन्महतः संचयान् कृतान् ।
मृगाणां महिषाणां च करीषैः शीतकारणात् ॥६॥
6. dadarśa ca vane tasminmahataḥ saṃcayān kṛtān ,
mṛgāṇāṃ mahiṣāṇāṃ ca karīṣaiḥ śītakāraṇāt.
6. dadarśa ca vane tasmin mahataḥ saṃcayān kṛtān
mṛgāṇām mahiṣāṇām ca karīṣaiḥ śītakāraṇāt

6. And in that forest, he saw large piles of deer and buffalo dung, which had been collected because of the cold.
गच्छनेव महाबाहुर्द्युतिमान्भरतस्तदा ।
शत्रुघ्नं चाब्रवीद्धृष्टस्तानमात्यांश्च सर्वशः ॥७॥
7. gacchaneva mahābāhurdyutimānbharatastadā ,
śatrughnaṃ cābravīddhṛṣṭastānamātyāṃśca sarvaśaḥ.
7. gacchan eva mahābāhuḥ dyutimān bharataḥ tadā
śatrughnam ca abravīt hṛṣṭaḥ tān amātyān ca sarvaśaḥ
7. tadā dyutimān mahābāhuḥ hṛṣṭaḥ bharataḥ gacchan
eva śatrughnam ca tān amātyān ca sarvaśaḥ abravīt
7. Then, the mighty-armed and radiant Bharata, while he was proceeding, spoke with delight to Shatrughna and to all those ministers.
मन्ये प्राप्ताः स्म तं देशं भरद्वाजो यमब्रवीत् ।
नातिदूरे हि मन्ये ऽहं नदीं मन्दाकिनीमितः ॥८॥
8. manye prāptāḥ sma taṃ deśaṃ bharadvājo yamabravīt ,
nātidūre hi manye'haṃ nadīṃ mandākinīmitaḥ.
8. manye prāptāḥ sma tam deśam bharadvājaḥ yam abravīt
na atidūre hi manye aham nadīm mandākinīm itaḥ
8. aham manye prāptāḥ sma tam deśam yam bharadvājaḥ abravīt.

8. I believe we have reached that very place which Bharadvaja had spoken of. Indeed, I think the Mandakini river is not very far from here.
उच्चैर्बद्धानि चीराणि लक्ष्मणेन भवेदयम् ।
अभिज्ञानकृतः पन्था विकाले गन्तुमिच्छता ॥९॥
9. uccairbaddhāni cīrāṇi lakṣmaṇena bhavedayam ,
abhijñānakṛtaḥ panthā vikāle gantumicchatā.
9. uccaiḥ baddhāni cīrāṇi lakṣmaṇena bhavet ayam
abhijñānakṛtaḥ panthāḥ vikāle gantum icchatā
9. uccaiḥ cīrāṇi lakṣmaṇena baddhāni.

9. These bark clothes, tied high up, must have been placed by Lakshmana. This path must have been marked as a sign by someone wishing to travel in the dark (or at an unsuitable time).
इदं चोदात्तदन्तानां कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम् ।
शैलपार्श्वे परिक्रान्तमन्योन्यमभिगर्जताम् ॥१०॥
10. idaṃ codāttadantānāṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ tarasvinām ,
śailapārśve parikrāntamanyonyamabhigarjatām.
10. idam ca udāttadantānām kuñjarāṇām tarasvinām
śailapārśve parikrāntam anyonyam abhigarjatām
10. idam ca śailapārśve udāttadantānām tarasvinām
kuñjarāṇām anyonyam abhigarjatām parikrāntam
10. This is where powerful elephants, with their magnificent tusks, roam on the mountain slopes, roaring at each other.
यमेवाधातुमिच्छन्ति तापसाः सततं वने ।
तस्यासौ दृश्यते धूमः संकुलः कृष्टवर्त्मनः ॥११॥
11. yamevādhātumicchanti tāpasāḥ satataṃ vane ,
tasyāsau dṛśyate dhūmaḥ saṃkulaḥ kṛṣṭavartmanaḥ.
11. yam eva ādhātum icchanti tāpasāḥ satatam vane
tasya asau dṛśyate dhūmaḥ saṃkulaḥ kṛṣṭavartmanaḥ
11. vane tāpasāḥ satatam yam eva ādhātum icchanti,
tasya saṃkulaḥ kṛṣṭavartmanaḥ asau dhūmaḥ dṛśyate
11. This is the dense smoke of the fire that ascetics constantly wish to kindle (ādhāna) in the forest – a fire whose track is clearly marked (as if ploughed).
अत्राहं पुरुषव्याघ्रं गुरुसत्कारकारिणम् ।
आर्यं द्रक्ष्यामि संहृष्टो महर्षिमिव राघवम् ॥१२॥
12. atrāhaṃ puruṣavyāghraṃ gurusatkārakāriṇam ,
āryaṃ drakṣyāmi saṃhṛṣṭo maharṣimiva rāghavam.
12. atra aham puruṣavyāghram gurusatkārakāriṇam
āryam drakṣyāmi saṃhṛṣṭaḥ maharṣim iva rāghavam
12. atra saṃhṛṣṭaḥ aham maharṣim iva puruṣavyāghram
gurusatkārakāriṇam āryam rāghavam drakṣyāmi
12. Here, I, overjoyed, will see the noble Rāghava, who is like a great sage, the foremost among men, and one who reveres his elders (guru).
अथ गत्वा मुहूर्तं तु चित्रकूटं स राघवः ।
मन्दाकिनीमनुप्राप्तस्तं जनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. atha gatvā muhūrtaṃ tu citrakūṭaṃ sa rāghavaḥ ,
mandākinīmanuprāptastaṃ janaṃ cedamabravīt.
13. atha gatvā muhūrtam tu citrakūṭam saḥ rāghavaḥ
mandākinīm anuprāptaḥ tam janam ca idam abravīt
13. atha saḥ rāghavaḥ muhūrtam tu gatvā citrakūṭam

13. Then, after traveling for a short while, Rāghava reached Citrakūṭa and the Mandākinī river, and addressed those people with these words.
जगत्यां पुरुषव्याघ्र आस्ते वीरासने रतः ।
जनेन्द्रो निर्जनं प्राप्य धिन्मे जन्म सजीवितम् ॥१४॥
14. jagatyāṃ puruṣavyāghra āste vīrāsane rataḥ ,
janendro nirjanaṃ prāpya dhinme janma sajīvitam.
14. jagatyām puruṣavyāghra āste vīrāsane rataḥ
janendraḥ nirjanam prāpya dhik me janma sa-jīvitam
14. puruṣavyāghra janendraḥ jagatyām nirjanam prāpya
vīrāsane rataḥ āste dhik me janma sa-jīvitam
14. O tiger among men, the lord of men, having reached a solitary place, remains seated, absorbed in the heroic posture. Alas for my birth and my life!
मत्कृते व्यसनं प्राप्तो लोकनाथो महाद्युतिः ।
सरान् कामान्परित्यज्य वने वसति राघवः ॥१५॥
15. matkṛte vyasanaṃ prāpto lokanātho mahādyutiḥ ,
sarān kāmānparityajya vane vasati rāghavaḥ.
15. mat-kṛte vyasanam prāptaḥ lokanāthaḥ mahādyutiḥ
sarvān kāmān parityajya vane vasati rāghavaḥ
15. mahādyutiḥ lokanāthaḥ mat-kṛte vyasanam prāptaḥ
rāghavaḥ sarvān kāmān parityajya vane vasati
15. The greatly radiant lord of the world has experienced misfortune because of me. Abandoning all desires, Rāghava lives in the forest.
इति लोकसमाक्रुष्टः पादेष्वद्य प्रसादयन् ।
रामस्य निपतिष्यामि सीतायाश्च पुनः पुनः ॥१६॥
16. iti lokasamākruṣṭaḥ pādeṣvadya prasādayan ,
rāmasya nipatiṣyāmi sītāyāśca punaḥ punaḥ.
16. iti loka-samākruṣṭaḥ pādeṣu adya prasādayan
rāmasya nipatiṣyāmi sītāyāḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ
16. iti loka-samākruṣṭaḥ (aham) adya prasādayan
rāmasya sītāyāḥ ca pādeṣu punaḥ punaḥ nipatiṣyāmi
16. Thus, reviled by people, I will fall down again and again at the feet of Rama and Sītā today, propitiating them.
एवं स विलपंस्तस्मिन् वने दशरथात्मजः ।
ददर्श महतीं पुण्यां पर्णशालां मनोरमाम् ॥१७॥
17. evaṃ sa vilapaṃstasmin vane daśarathātmajaḥ ,
dadarśa mahatīṃ puṇyāṃ parṇaśālāṃ manoramām.
17. evam saḥ vilapan tasmin vane daśarathātmajaḥ
dadarśa mahatīm puṇyām parṇaśālām manoramām
17. evam vilapan saḥ daśarathātmajaḥ tasmin vane
mahatīm puṇyām manoramām parṇaśālām dadarśa
17. Thus lamenting in that forest, the son of Daśaratha saw a large, sacred, and delightful leaf-hut.
सालतालाश्वकर्णानां पर्णैर्बहुभिरावृताम् ।
विशालां मृदुभिस्तीर्णां कुशैर्वेदिमिवाध्वरे ॥१८॥
18. sālatālāśvakarṇānāṃ parṇairbahubhirāvṛtām ,
viśālāṃ mṛdubhistīrṇāṃ kuśairvedimivādhvare.
18. sālatālāśvakarṇānām parṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ āvṛtām
viśālām mṛdubhiḥ tīrṇām kuśaiḥ vedim iva adhvare
18. viśālām sālatālāśvakarṇānām bahubhiḥ parṇaiḥ
āvṛtām mṛdubhiḥ kuśaiḥ tīrṇām adhvare vedim iva
18. Covered with numerous leaves from śāla, tāla, and aśvakarṇa trees, and vast, it was spread with soft kuśa grass, just like a sacrificial altar (vedi) in a ritual (adhvara).
शक्रायुध निकाशैश्च कार्मुकैर्भारसाधनैः ।
रुक्मपृष्ठैर्महासारैः शोभितां शत्रुबाधकैः ॥१९॥
19. śakrāyudha nikāśaiśca kārmukairbhārasādhanaiḥ ,
rukmapṛṣṭhairmahāsāraiḥ śobhitāṃ śatrubādhakaiḥ.
19. śakrāyudha nikāśaiḥ ca kārmukaiḥ bhārasādhanaiḥ
rukmapṛṣṭhaiḥ mahāsāraiḥ śobhitām śatrubādhakaiḥ

19. It was adorned with bows that shone like Indra's (śakra) weapon (the rainbow), capable of achieving great feats, with golden backs, exceedingly powerful, and capable of harassing enemies.
अर्करश्मिप्रतीकाशैर्घोरैस्तूणीगतैः शरैः ।
शोभितां दीप्तवदनैः सर्पैर्भोगवतीमिव ॥२०॥
20. arkaraśmipratīkāśairghoraistūṇīgataiḥ śaraiḥ ,
śobhitāṃ dīptavadanaiḥ sarpairbhogavatīmiva.
20. arkarasmipratīkāśaiḥ ghoraiḥ tūṇīgataiḥ śaraiḥ
śobhitām dīptavadanaiḥ sarpaiḥ bhogavatīm iva

śaraiḥ dīptavadanaiḥ sarpaiḥ bhogavatīm iva
20. It was adorned with dreadful arrows, shining like sunbeams and resting in quivers, resembling Bhogavatī, the city of serpents (nāgas), with its luminous-faced serpents.
महारजतवासोभ्यामसिभ्यां च विराजिताम् ।
रुक्मबिन्दुविचित्राभ्यां चर्मभ्यां चापि शोभिताम् ॥२१॥
21. mahārajatavāsobhyāmasibhyāṃ ca virājitām ,
rukmabinduvicitrābhyāṃ carmabhyāṃ cāpi śobhitām.
21. mahārajatavāsobhyām asibhyām ca virājitam
rukmabinduvicitrābhyām carmabhyām ca api śobhitām
21. virājitam mahārajatavāsobhyām asibhyām ca api
ca śobhitām rukmabinduvicitrābhyām carmabhyām
21. It was splendidly adorned with two garments of great white or silver color and with two swords, and further embellished with two shields variegated with golden dots.
गोधाङ्गुलित्रैरासाक्तैश्चित्रैः काञ्चनभूषितैः ।
अरिसंघैरनाधृष्यां मृगैः सिंहगुहामिव ॥२२॥
22. godhāṅgulitrairāsāktaiścitraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣitaiḥ ,
arisaṃghairanādhṛṣyāṃ mṛgaiḥ siṃhaguhāmiva.
22. godhāṅgulitraiḥ āsāktaiḥ citraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣitaiḥ
arisaṅghaiḥ anādhṛṣyām mṛgaiḥ siṃhaguhām iva
22. anādhṛṣyām arisaṅghaiḥ godhāṅgulitraiḥ āsāktaiḥ
citraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣitaiḥ iva siṃhaguhām mṛgaiḥ
22. It was unassailable by hosts of enemies, [who were] adorned with splendid, gold-embellished finger-guards (aṅgulitra) made of iguana (godhā) skin, just as a lion's den is unassailable by deer.
प्रागुदक्स्रवणां वेदिं विशालां दीप्तपावकाम् ।
ददर्श भरतस्तत्र पुण्यां रामनिवेशने ॥२३॥
23. prāgudaksravaṇāṃ vediṃ viśālāṃ dīptapāvakām ,
dadarśa bharatastatra puṇyāṃ rāmaniveśane.
23. prāgudaksravaṇām vedim viśālām dīptapāvakām
dadarśa bharataḥ tatra puṇyām rāmaniveśane

23. There, in Rama's dwelling, Bharata saw a spacious, sacred altar, with its outflow directed towards the northeast and a blazing fire.
निरीक्ष्य स मुहूर्तं तु ददर्श भरतो गुरुम् ।
उटजे राममासीनां जटामण्डलधारिणम् ॥२४॥
24. nirīkṣya sa muhūrtaṃ tu dadarśa bharato gurum ,
uṭaje rāmamāsīnāṃ jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇam.
24. nirīkṣya saḥ muhūrtam tu dadarśa bharataḥ
gurum uṭaje rāmam āsīnam jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇam
24. saḥ bharataḥ muhūrtam nirīkṣya tu uṭaje
jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇam āsīnam gurum rāmam dadarśa
24. After looking for a moment, Bharata then saw his venerable elder (guru), Rama, seated in the hermitage hut, wearing a mass of matted hair.
तं तु कृष्णाजिनधरं चीरवल्कलवाससं ।
ददर्श राममासीनमभितः पावकोपमम् ॥२५॥
25. taṃ tu kṛṣṇājinadharaṃ cīravalkalavāsasaṃ ,
dadarśa rāmamāsīnamabhitaḥ pāvakopamam.
25. tam tu kṛṣṇājinadharam cīravalkalavāsasam
dadarśa rāmam āsīnam abhitaḥ pāvakopamam
25. tu tam rāmam kṛṣṇājinadharam cīravalkalavāsasam

25. Bharata saw him, Rama, seated, wearing a black deer skin and bark garments, and resembling fire (pāvaka) all around.
सिंहस्कन्धं महाबाहुं पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणम् ।
पृथिव्याः सगरान्ताया भर्तारं धर्मचारिणम् ॥२६॥
26. siṃhaskandhaṃ mahābāhuṃ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇam ,
pṛthivyāḥ sagarāntāyā bhartāraṃ dharmacāriṇam.
26. siṃhaskandham mahābāhum puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇam
pṛthivyāḥ sagarāntāyāḥ bhartāram dharmacāriṇam
26. siṃhaskandham mahābāhum puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇam
pṛthivyāḥ sagarāntāyāḥ bhartāram dharmacāriṇam
26. Him, with shoulders like a lion, mighty-armed, with eyes resembling lotuses, the protector of the earth extending to the ocean, who constantly upholds his intrinsic nature (dharma).
उपविष्टं महाबाहुं ब्रह्माणमिव शाश्वतम् ।
स्थण्डिले दर्भसस्म्तीर्णे सीतया लक्ष्मणेन च ॥२७॥
27. upaviṣṭaṃ mahābāhuṃ brahmāṇamiva śāśvatam ,
sthaṇḍile darbhasasmtīrṇe sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca.
27. upaviṣṭam mahābāhum brahmāṇam iva śāśvatam
sthaṇḍile darbhasamstīrṇe sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca
27. mahābāhum śāśvatam brahmāṇam iva upaviṣṭam
darbhasamstīrṇe sthaṇḍile sītayā ca lakṣmaṇena
27. Him, seated, mighty-armed, eternal like Brahmā, on a patch of ground strewn with Darbha grass, accompanied by Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa.
तं दृष्ट्वा भरतः श्रीमान्दुःखमोहपरिप्लुतः ।
अभ्यधावत धर्मात्मा भरतः कैकयीसुतः ॥२८॥
28. taṃ dṛṣṭvā bharataḥ śrīmānduḥkhamohapariplutaḥ ,
abhyadhāvata dharmātmā bharataḥ kaikayīsutaḥ.
28. tam dṛṣṭvā bharataḥ śrīmān duḥkhamohaparilplutaḥ
abhyadhāvata dharmātmā bharataḥ kaikayīsutaḥ
28. tam dṛṣṭvā śrīmān duḥkhamohaparilplutaḥ

28. Having seen him, the illustrious Bharata, overwhelmed by sorrow and bewilderment, the righteous-souled (dharma) Bharata, son of Kaikeyī, ran towards him.
दृष्ट्वा च विललापार्तो बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा ।
अशक्नुवन्धारयितुं धैर्याद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२९॥
29. dṛṣṭvā ca vilalāpārto bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā girā ,
aśaknuvandhārayituṃ dhairyādvacanamabravīt.
29. dṛṣṭvā ca vilalāpa ārtaḥ bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā girā
aśaknuvan dhārayitum dhairyāt vacanam abravīt

29. And having seen him, distressed, he wailed with a voice choked by tears. Unable to maintain his composure, he spoke these words.
यः संसदि प्रकृतिभिर्भवेद् युक्त उपासितुम् ।
वन्यैर्मृगैरुपासीनः सो ऽयमास्ते ममाग्रजः ॥३०॥
30. yaḥ saṃsadi prakṛtibhirbhaved yukta upāsitum ,
vanyairmṛgairupāsīnaḥ so'yamāste mamāgrajaḥ.
30. yaḥ saṃsadi prakṛtibhiḥ bhavet yuktaḥ upāsitum
vanyaiḥ mṛgaiḥ upāsīnaḥ saḥ ayam āste mama agrajaḥ
30. yaḥ saṃsadi prakṛtibhiḥ yuktaḥ upāsitum bhavet,
saḥ ayam mama agrajaḥ vanyaiḥ mṛgaiḥ upāsīnaḥ āste.
30. My elder brother, who should rightly be honored and attended by his subjects (prakṛti) in an assembly, now sits here, attended by wild animals.
वासोभिर्बहुसाहस्रैर्यो महात्मा पुरोचितः ।
मृगाजिने सो ऽयमिह प्रवस्ते धर्ममाचरन् ॥३१॥
31. vāsobhirbahusāhasrairyo mahātmā purocitaḥ ,
mṛgājine so'yamiha pravaste dharmamācaran.
31. vāsobhiḥ bahusāhasraiḥ yaḥ mahātmā purocitaḥ
mṛgājine saḥ ayam iha pravaste dharmam ācaran
31. yaḥ mahātmā bahusāhasraiḥ vāsobhiḥ purocitaḥ,
saḥ ayam iha dharmam ācaran mṛgājine pravaste.
31. He, the great-souled one (mahātman), who was accustomed to garments worth many thousands, now here wears a deer skin, practicing his natural law (dharma).
अधारयद् यो विविधाश्चित्राः सुमनसस्तदा ।
सो ऽयं जटाभारमिमं सहते राघवः कथम् ॥३२॥
32. adhārayad yo vividhāścitrāḥ sumanasastadā ,
so'yaṃ jaṭābhāramimaṃ sahate rāghavaḥ katham.
32. adhārayat yaḥ vividhāḥ citrāḥ sumanasaḥ tadā
saḥ ayam jaṭābhāram imam sahate rāghavaḥ katham
32. yaḥ tadā vividhāḥ citrāḥ sumanasaḥ adhārayat,
saḥ ayam rāghavaḥ imam jaṭābhāram katham sahate?
32. How does this Rama, who formerly adorned himself with various beautiful flowers, now endure this heavy burden of matted hair?
यस्य यज्ञैर्यथादिष्टैर्युक्तो धर्मस्य संचयः ।
शरीर क्लेशसंभूतं स धर्मं परिमार्गते ॥३३॥
33. yasya yajñairyathādiṣṭairyukto dharmasya saṃcayaḥ ,
śarīra kleśasaṃbhūtaṃ sa dharmaṃ parimārgate.
33. yasya yajñaiḥ yathādiṣṭaiḥ yuktaḥ dharmasya saṃcayaḥ
śarīrakleśasaṃbhūtam saḥ dharmam parimārgate
33. yasya dharmasya saṃcayaḥ yathādiṣṭaiḥ yajñaiḥ yuktaḥ (asti),
saḥ śarīrakleśasaṃbhūtam dharmam parimārgate
33. He who has an accumulation of natural law (dharma) associated with Vedic rituals (yajña) performed as prescribed, also seeks that natural law (dharma) which originates from physical austerity.
चन्दनेन महार्हेण यस्याङ्गमुपसेवितम् ।
मलेन तस्याङ्गमिदं कथमार्यस्य सेव्यते ॥३४॥
34. candanena mahārheṇa yasyāṅgamupasevitam ,
malena tasyāṅgamidaṃ kathamāryasya sevyate.
34. candanena mahārheṇa yasya aṅgam upasevitam
malena tasya aṅgam idam katham āryasya sevyate
34. yasya aṅgam mahārheṇa candanena upasevitam,
tasya āryasya idam aṅgam malena katham sevyate?
34. How can this body of a noble one, which was once anointed with precious sandalwood, now be afflicted by dirt?
मन्निमित्तमिदं दुःखं प्राप्तो रामः सुखोचितः ।
धिग्जीवितं नृशंसस्य मम लोकविगर्हितम् ॥३५॥
35. mannimittamidaṃ duḥkhaṃ prāpto rāmaḥ sukhocitaḥ ,
dhigjīvitaṃ nṛśaṃsasya mama lokavigarhitam.
35. mat nimittam idam duḥkham prāptaḥ rāmaḥ sukha
ucitaḥ dhik jīvitam nṛśaṃsasya mama loka vigarhitam
35. sukha-ucitaḥ rāmaḥ mat-nimittam idam duḥkham prāptaḥ.
nṛśaṃsasya loka-vigarhitam mama jīvitam dhik!
35. Rāma, who is accustomed to comfort, has experienced this suffering because of me. Woe to my life, which is cruel and condemned by the world.
इत्येवं विलपन्दीनः प्रस्विन्नमुखपङ्कजः ।
पादावप्राप्य रामस्य पपात भरतो रुदन् ॥३६॥
36. ityevaṃ vilapandīnaḥ prasvinnamukhapaṅkajaḥ ,
pādāvaprāpya rāmasya papāta bharato rudan.
36. iti evam vilapan dīnaḥ prasvinna mukha paṅkajaḥ
pādau aprāpya rāmasya papāta bharataḥ rudan
36. iti evam vilapan,
dīnaḥ,
prasvinna-mukha-paṅkajaḥ,
rudan,
bharataḥ rāmasya pādau aprāpya papāta.
36. Thus lamenting, distressed and with his lotus-like face drenched in sweat, Bharata fell down weeping, without being able to reach Rāma's feet.
दुःखाभितप्तो भरतो राजपुत्रो महाबलः ।
उक्त्वार्येति सकृद्दीनं पुनर्नोवाच किं चन ॥३७॥
37. duḥkhābhitapto bharato rājaputro mahābalaḥ ,
uktvāryeti sakṛddīnaṃ punarnovāca kiṃ cana.
37. duḥkha abhitaptaḥ bharataḥ rāja putraḥ mahā balaḥ
uktvā ārye iti sakṛt dīnam punaḥ na uvāca kim cana
37. duḥkha-abhitaptaḥ,
rājaputraḥ,
mahābalaḥ bharataḥ,
sakṛt dīnam "ārye" iti uktvā,
punaḥ kim cana na uvāca.
37. The mighty prince Bharata, tormented by sorrow, having said 'O Noble one!' pitifully just once, spoke nothing more.
बाष्पापिहित कण्ठश्च प्रेक्ष्य रामं यशस्विनम् ।
आर्येत्येवाभिसंक्रुश्य व्याहर्तुं नाशकत्ततः ॥३८॥
38. bāṣpāpihita kaṇṭhaśca prekṣya rāmaṃ yaśasvinam ,
āryetyevābhisaṃkruśya vyāhartuṃ nāśakattataḥ.
38. bāṣpāpihita kaṇṭhaḥ ca prekṣya rāmam yaśasvinam ārya
iti eva abhisaṃkruśya vyāhartum na aśakat tataḥ
38. tataḥ bāṣpāpihita kaṇṭhaḥ ca yaśasvinam rāmam prekṣya
ārya iti eva abhisaṃkruśya vyāhartum na aśakat
38. And then, his throat choked with tears, upon seeing the glorious Rama, he cried out "O noble one!" but was unable to speak further.
शत्रुघ्नश्चापि रामस्य ववन्दे चरणौ रुदन् ।
ताव् उभौ स समालिङ्ग्य रामो ऽप्यश्रूण्यवर्तयत् ॥३९॥
39. śatrughnaścāpi rāmasya vavande caraṇau rudan ,
tāv ubhau sa samāliṅgya rāmo'pyaśrūṇyavartayat.
39. śatrughnaḥ ca api rāmasya vavande caraṇau rudan
tau ubhau saḥ samāliṅgya rāmaḥ api aśrūṇi avartayat
39. rudan śatrughnaḥ ca api rāmasya caraṇau vavande
saḥ rāmaḥ tau ubhau samāliṅgya api aśrūṇi avartayat
39. Weeping, Shatrughna also bowed at Rama's feet. Rama then embraced both of them and also shed tears.
ततः सुमन्त्रेण गुहेन चैव समीयतू राजसुतावरण्ये ।
दिवाकरश्चैव निशाकरश्च यथाम्बरे शुक्रबृहस्पतिभ्याम् ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ sumantreṇa guhena caiva samīyatū rājasutāvaraṇye ,
divākaraścaiva niśākaraśca yathāmbare śukrabṛhaspatibhyām.
40. tataḥ sumantreṇa guhena ca eva samīyatuḥ rājasutau araṇye
divākaraḥ ca eva niśākaraḥ ca yathā ambare śukrabṛhaspatibhyām
40. tataḥ rājasutau sumantreṇa guhena ca eva araṇye samīyatuḥ
yathā ambare divākaraḥ ca eva niśākaraḥ ca śukrabṛhaspatibhyām
40. Then, the two royal sons (Bharata and Shatrughna) met with Sumantra and Guha in the forest, just as the sun and the moon appear together with Venus and Jupiter in the sky.
तान्पार्थिवान् वारणयूथपाभान् समागतांस्तत्र महत्यरण्ये ।
वनौकसस्ते ऽपि समीक्ष्य सर्वे ऽप्यश्रूण्यमुञ्चन्प्रविहाय हर्षम् ॥४१॥
41. tānpārthivān vāraṇayūthapābhān samāgatāṃstatra mahatyaraṇye ,
vanaukasaste'pi samīkṣya sarve'pyaśrūṇyamuñcanpravihāya harṣam.

vanaukasaḥ te api samīkṣya sarve
api aśrūṇi amuñcan pravihāya harṣam

41. And all the forest-dwellers (vanaukasaḥ), seeing those assembled princes (pārthivān) - who resembled chiefs of elephant herds - in that great forest, also abandoned their joy and shed tears.
